EL CAJON (10-23-16) — Grossmont College couldn’t find its footing in Saturday’s (Oct. 22) National Southern Conference contest against Orange Coast College as the Griffins succumbed to the visiting Pirates 35-19.
Most shocking of the afternoon’s statistics was Grossmont outgained Orange Coast 541 yards to 263. Grossmont had 88 plays in their 29:45 time of possession, to OCC’s 58 plays and 30:15 TOP.
It doesn’t get much more misleading than that.
Grossmont had plenty of offensive punch as it was led by freshman RICHARD ESTEVEZ, who clicked on 19 of 37 for 344 yards and 2 touchdowns. He came off the bench to complete scoring strikes of 37 and 95 yards to ADRIAN TOLBERT, who totaled 200 for the game.
SPENCER MOYER concluded the Grossmont scoring with a 22-yard touchdown to SEBASTIAN SMITH in the final minute.
“We have excellent depth at quarterback,” said Estevez, who was a three year starter at Chula Vista High. “I was glad to get my first college opportunity. I feel like I fit the system here at Grossmont perfectly.”
Starting quarterback BRAD CAGLE has been sidelined with an ankle injury suffered in the Fullerton game.
Orange Coast sacked the Griffins 4 times and made 3 interceptions. Grossmont, on the other hand, recorded sacks by QUANTARIUS BOONE, IKEY POUMELE and 2 sacks by TREY SCHEMKE.
KURTIS BROOKS had an interception and a pass breakup as well as logging 5 tackles.
The defense had several stars. Freshman outside linebacker ANTON PAIGE of Everglades Prep in Pahokee, Fla. recorded a team best10 tackles, while freshman linebacker RODERICK WOODS out of Century, Fla. logged 8 stops and sophomore linebacker RYDEN KERR, a product of West Hills, had 7 tackles.
“We fight together but just came up a little bit short,” said Paige. “We’re building for the future and we can’t sit around and pout on the bench. Time to play is now – when you get the opportunity.”
NEHEMIAH BROWN paced the Grossmont running game with 44 yards on a dozen carries. NOLAN MINFIELD had 39 yards on 4 carries, while KEITH FULTON hammered out 28 yards on 9 carries.
