LA MESA – The West Hills Wolf Pack completed a historic season sweep of the 14th-ranked Helix Highlanders by winning 47-44 at Caledonian Gym on Friday night.

The win leveled the teams at 3-3 in the Grossmont Hills League, where every club is still well alive to win the championship.

West Hills limited the Highlanders to just five points in both the second and third quarter in a tremendous defensive effort.

Luke Gibson led the Wolf Pack with 15 points. He had a three-pointer in the second quarter but scored 10 points in the second half.

“Beating Helix at their own gym is truly an amazing feeling,” Gibson said. “Although the game was close, we stayed calm through the roaring crowd and the pressure that was on our backs. We pushed and fought through a tough win that we most definitely earned.”

Brendan Greene added 10 points for West Hills. Green hit a three-pointer early for the Pack, which took a short lead out of the gate, although Helix led 15-11 after one quarter.

Ashton Avestro also had a three-pointer in the second quarter on the way to 11 points in the contest.

West Hills scored the first six points of the second half for a 25-20 lead and a Helix timeout. Moments later, the Pack extended the lead to 32-22.

Kyle Dobyns added eight points for WHHS.

“Helix was doing whatever they could to stop Kyle,” Avestro said. “Luke and I just played our role as best we could and try to make plays to help out the team in any way we could.

“As soon as the buzzer sounded, all I could hear was my teammates screaming. It definitely feels good to sweep them especially in my senior year.”

Markees Williams had a three-pointer in the first quarter for Helix. He finished with 13 points.

Bona O’Quinn and Isaiah Thomas helped Helix’s late charge. Thomas recorded three blocked shots in the game.

The Highlanders outscored the Wolf Pack 17-5 in the fourth quarter, as O’Quinn and Thomas combined for 15 points in the period.

Ahkwon White buried a triple in the opening quarter for Helix.

On Saturday, the Wolf Pack went up against Victory Christian and didn’t appear flat following their big victory a night early, taking a 71-55 decision.

In fact, the teams came out firing, combining for 45 points in the first quarter, as West Hills led by just one at the end of the period.
