LA MESA – An East County sports which often lacks publicity proved to be one of the most exciting finishes of the season.

Buoyed by a series of narrow victories against the usual top contenders, Helix completed an undefeated run to capture the Grossmont Hills League championship.

“We finished the league season 8-0 and are 12-1 on the season,: said head coach Dan Potter.

The Highlanders knew they would be successful following a close loss to Patrick Henry to open the season. Since then, the Scotties whipped off 12 consecutive triumphs, including all eight GHL matches.

Included were a pair of 10-8 wins over Steele Canyon, but match wins over Valhalla of 11-7 and 10-8.

Helix will complete the regular season on Tuesday (Apr. 29) by hosting Cathedral Catholic. Then it’s on to the CIF-San Diego Section Division 1 playoffs.

“What makes our team so good is our depth,” added Poyyer. “We don’y have a set lineup.”

The Scotties feature four team captains: seniors Mykhailo Ploskodniak, Ian Riggin, and Omar Arevalo; and junior Brock Lorenzo.
