LA MESA — Angel Watkins, who posted one of the top single-game performances in the history of the Grossmont Conference, is being credited with one official record.

In the CIF-Southern Section regional, partaking in the Division 3 quarterfinals on Tue.,  June 2, Watkins drilled a two-run single and a grand slam in the sixth inning, when the Highlanders scored 11 times to down visiting Laguna Beach, 13-4.

The six RBI in the inning is nice, but East County Sports, using the combined record from The Daily Californian and this website, could not determine if the feat is a playoff record.

However, the record Watkins is receiving credit for is even better.

In the victory over the Breakers, Watkins finished with eight RBI — a new Grossmont Conference playoff record.

There have been conference players credited with nine RBI in a single contest — Jimmy Tatum of Santana, vs. ECVHS, 5-17-1985; and Jason Claros of Granite Hills, vs. Valhalla, 5-8-1998 — but they
were registered in regular-season contests.

In fact, the CIF-San Diego Section record is 13, set by Christian’s Jon Cox late in the 20th Century.

Players from Patrick Henry, Ramona (twice) and Mountain Empire also own nine RBI.

But never has Watkins’ total of eight has ever occurred in postseason competition.

Against Laguna Beach, Watkins batted 4-for-4 with nine total bases — the slam, two doubles and a single. Total base records have never been recorded, but if a school administrator or coach knows of better than 11, please pass along the information.

The eight RBI effort was also enough for Watkins to leap over two players and become the Grossmont Hills League leader in runs batted in.

Watkins finished the season with 36 RBI, There was a deadlock for second with 32 RBI between teammate Bryan Herman and Granite Hills’ Colton Windham.

The trio was followed by two additional Scotties: Ben Williams (30) and Kei Smith (29).
