EL CAJON - For the second straight season,
El Capitan 7-footer JARROD BOSWELL has been named the EastCountySports.com
East County Player of the Year. Although his team did not establish
any records for victories or points, the Wyoming-bound Boswell
etched his name among San Diego County's all-time elite.
In 87 games over four varsity seasons,
Boswell's numbers were phenomenal. He established a San Diego
CIF record for blocked shots with 297, breaking the mark of 296
set by Lincoln's Barry Randle (1989-92). Helix's Bill Walton
(1968-70) held the East County record of 212 blocks for three
decades before Boswell stepped up.
Boswell's career totals also included 1,476
points (17.0 ppg), 938 rebounds (10.8 pg) and a field goal shooting
percentage of .565 percent (594-1051). As a senior, he led East
County in scoring (23.3 ppg), field goal shooting percentage
.595 (242-of-407), rebounding (13.0 rpg), and blocks 73.
The ECS.com Coach of the Year award
went to Helix's JOHN SINGER, who led the Highlanders to their
7th straight Grossmont South League title, while becoming the
6th coach in San Diego County history to reach the 400-victory
plateau. Singer's 22-year victory total of 404 wins ties him
for 5th all-time.
ECS.com's
pick for East County Rookie of the Year went to Steele Canyon's
CAMILLO MARTINEZ.
Another noteworthy achievement is that
of Grossmont junior TYLER VICKERS, who moved from 3rd team as
a sophomore to 1st team this year.

EL CAJON - Seniors CHRISTINE FITZGERALD
of Mount Miguel and JESSICA CABLE of El Capitan have been selected
the EastCountySports.com 2003 All-East County Girls Basketball
Players of the Year.
It was the second time in as many years
that Fitzgerald has earned a share of the coveted award. Coming
off a pair of knee surgeries, the 5-foot-6 guard guided the Matadors
to their third straight Grossmont South League championship and
into the Southern California Regionals for the 2nd year in a
row. Fitzgerald averaged 12.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.3 assists
and 5.1 steals for the 27-4 Matadors as a senior.
Cable, a hard-nosed 5-foot-10 forward and
one of two seniors on the team, led El Capitan into the Southern
California Regionals for the first time in school history. She
produced 15.8 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 3.7 steals
per game this season.
El Capitan's DARIN CURTIS is the selection
for EastCountySports.com 2003 Girls Basketball Coach of
the Year. The fourth-year mentor directed the Vaqueros to 21
wins and nearly upset Mater Dei in the SoCal Regionals despite
starting three underclassmen.
Mount Miguel freshman JERICA WILLIAMS,
an aggressive defender who came into her own the second half
of the season, was chosen East County Rookie of the Year by the
ECS.com staff.
Santana senior JAIME RANSOM deserves special
recognition for her outstanding career. Three times she was named
to the All-East County first team after earning second-team honors
as a freshman.
