2002 ALL-EAST COUNTY PREP
FOOTBALL TEAM
Bush closes career ranked
with conference greats
Two-time player of year joins
teammate Johnson as top players; two share coaching honor
EastCountySports.com staff
EL CAJON - Washington, USC, Stanford, Notre
Dame, Texas, UCLA . . . Who will win the recruiting derby for
Helix senior running back REGGIE BUSH? Look for the Grossmont
Conference's all-time leading rusher and top scorer to take the
full NCAA allotment of five recruiting trips before deciding
his future.
For the second year in a row, Bush has
been named the EastCountySports.com East County Offensive
Player of the Year. After setting a fistful of Grossmont Conference
season records as a junior, Bush's totals dipped some as a senior.
Considering he played with a broken wrist from the second game
on - completely missing one game and carrying only once in another
- his numbers were nonetheless impressive.
East County Defensive Player of the Year
honors, as chosen by the EastCountySports.com staff, went
to Helix senior lineman MELVIN JOHNSON.
Grossmont High's DAVE NAPOLEON and Christian
High's MATT OLIVER are Co-East County Coaches of the Year as
selected by EastCountySports.com staff. Oliver shared
the honor with Helix's Gordon Wood last year.
Fifty-five players are included on the
26th annual All-East County Football Team.
During his three seasons at Helix, Bush
helped the Highlanders win two San Diego CIF Division II championships
and a pair of Grossmont South League crowns while compiling a
36-3 record.
In terms of career rushing statistics,
Bush is East County's all-time best. He owns 4,925 yards on 441
carries - an average of 11.2 yards per junket. He's scored 75
touchdowns (450 points). None of his East County predecessors
is even close to those marks.
Take your pick. . . LeRoy McGee (El Cajon
Valley/Grossmont JC/Michigan State), Tom Vardell (Granite Hills/Stanford/Browns/Lions/49ers),
Steve Webster (Helix/USC), Michael Wiley (Monte Vista/Ohio State),
Ian Miller (Monte Vista/Northwestern),Jason Van (Helix/San Diego
State) and Keith Price (Grossmont/Yale). All were marquee running
backs who could advance the ball downfield with uncommon ease.
Few were more fluid than Bush. The 5-foot-11,
185-pounder has the speed of a greyhound, the grace of a Nuryev
and the balance of a Wallenda.
Bush has earned an All-East County berth
all three of his varsity seasons. Christian High quarterback/defensive
back JOEL ALLEN is the only other member of this year's All-East
County squad to do the same.
The 6-foot, 275-pound Johnson was a fierce
pass-rusher, who notched 15 sacks and made 22 tackles for losses
for the 11-2 Highlanders.
Oliver seemed as much a psychologist as
a football coach this season, as he repeatedly rallied his Patriots
just when it appeared the curtain was about to fall. Despite
a series of injuries, a late-season forfeit and a 1-4 Harbor
League finish, Oliver geared his troops up for a three-game sweep
in the playoffs which brought Christian the Division IV championship.
Napoleon led the Foothillers to their finest
season in 13 years, finishing 10-2 with a share of the Grossmont
North League championship. The Foothillers reached the SDCIF
Division II quarterfinals before falling to Monte Vista 7-6 in
the rain and mud.
Allen led East County in passing with 2,641
yards and 22 TDs, connecting on 183 of 373 attempts. His career
passing totals include 7,273 yards and 73 TDs. Allen also logged
16 rushing TDs and 402 yards.
Helix receiver CHARLES SMITH, who is likely
going to sign with the University of Washington, joins Bush,
Allen, Johnson and Highlanders' defensive end RICKY THOMAS as
repeat first-team honorees on the 2002 All-East County squad.
El Capitan junior SEAN HENSCHEL earned
two berths on the 2002 squad. He was the first team kicker and
second team punter.
