Coyotes' Bland, Browning are All-Pacific
Coast first team selections EL CAJON - Despite a last-minute penalty that caused Cuyamaca College to cancel its trip to the Southern California playoffs, the Coyotes managed to earn two All-Pacific Coast Conference first-team berths. Sophomores RANDY BLAND and TIM BROWNING were selected to the eight-man first team in balloting by the conference's eight head coaches. Named to the PCC's second team were Grossmont guard SCOTT CARR and Helix High alum WILL WAGGONER of Southwestern. Southwestern's RONNIE McMILLAN was the PCC's Most Valuable Player. No coach of the year was announced, most
likely due to the turbulence created by the massive Cuyamaca
forfeits. The Coyotes were forced to forfeit 7 PCC wins when
a district rival nailed Cuyamaca for using an ineligible player.
The player in question was the Coyotes' 9th man. Arenas, Bennett, Burks are All-PCC first-team picks; Former easterners Moses, Schiele honoredEastCountySports.com staff report EL CAJON - ROGER MOSES doesn't claim to
be a magician, but he does know a little bit about concocting
a winning formula based on his coaching endeavors in the Pacific
Coast Conference. Moses achieved a PCC first when he was named
the 2003 Coach of the Year for directing the Palomar Comets to
a share of the Moses performed a similar feat when he resurrected a doormat Grossmont College program in the early 1990s and captured a PCC championship. "I'm kinda proud to be the only coach ever to win a championship in this conference at two different schools," Moses admitted. Meanwhile, El Cajon Valley High alum SHANNON SCHEILE of San Diego Mesa was named the PCC's Most Valuable Player. MARISAA ARENAS was Grossmont College's
lone first team selection, while DENISE BENNETT (Santana HS)
and VALLI BURKS (El Capitan HS) represented Cuyamaca College
on the first team. |

EastCountySports.com staff report
EL CAJON - Maybe it came as a surprise to
some when Grossmont College grabbed
a share of the Pacific Coast Conference championship this season.
But the
Griffins' first PCC title since 1986 - a co-championship with
preseason
favorite Palomar - was fully recognized in the doling out of post-season
awards.
Grossmont sophomore John Clark, who scored
a conference-best 21.3 points per
game (20.8 overall), was selected the PCC's Most Valuable Player
by the
circuit coaches. A 49.9 percent shooter from the field, Clark
led the
Griffins with 48 three-pointers while knocking down 131 of 187
free throws
(.701). He scored 20 or more points in 10 of the Griffins 14 conference
games.
Grossmont's Doug Weber, in just his fourth
season at the Griffins' helm, was
voted the PCC Coach of the Year by his peers. After a 3-9 start,
Weber's
Griffins came on to win 15 of their final 19 games. That includes
an 11-3
finish against conference competition.
Sophomore Maury Brown of Grossmont was also
named to the eight-man All-PCC
first team by the coaches. Brown averaged 12.1 points and 4.8
rebounds per
game.
The Griffins, who open the Southern California
Regional playoffs on Friday
(March 1) at Antelope Valley, were the only team to receive more
than one
first-team berth.
Cuyamaca freshman Randy Bland was also named
to the eight-man first unit by
the PCC coaches. Bland averaged 19.4 ppg to rank third in the
conference.
His 10.4 rebounds per game was second-best in the circuit.
East County product Julian Trisby, a 6-foot-6
freshman out of Helix High,
represented Southwestern College on the seven-man All-PCC second
team. Trisby
averaged 11.8 ppg for the Jaguars.
Included in the Honorable Selections were
Cuyamaca's Tim Browning (El
Capitan) and Grossmont's Sylvester Crockem and Scott Smith.

Hinchliff, King tabbed first-team All-PCC
EastCountySports.com staff report
EL CAJON - Grossmont College sophomores Anna Hinchliff and Cindie King have been named to the All-Pacific Coast Conference women's basketball first team in balloting conducted by the league coaches.
Hinchliff averaged 13.6 points and 11.2 rebounds per game, while King averaged 15.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per game against conference competition.
Three East County high school graduates who helped San Diego Mesa College capture the PCC championship received all-conference recognition. Sophomore center Kathryn Wynne (Santana) earned a first-team berth, averaging 14.6 points and 11.6 rebounds per game.
Mesa freshman Elisabeth Reynolds (Granite
Hills) was the PCC's leading rebounder against conference competition,
averaging just under 12 per game. She also shot 60 percent from
the field - tops in the conference, yet the
coaches unaccountably omitted her from the 11-player first team.
She received Honorable Mention recognition, as did Mesa point
guard Thea Bachmann (Santana). Bachmann led the conference in
steals with.
Cuyamaca freshman guard Catie Schilling also earned Honorable Mention.
Imperial Valley's Sandra Ramos (19.4 ppg)
