O'Sullivan, Snyder get first-team Breitbard honors
EastCountySports.com

SAN DIEGO - Six East County players have been named to the All-San Diego CIF Breitbard Hall of Champions Baseball team, including repeat honorees SEAN O'SULLIVAN of Valhalla and shortstop JUSTIN SNYDER of El Capitan.

O'Sullivan, a junior who batted a county-best .617 while posting an 11-1 pitching record, earned first-team honors for the second season in a row, while Snyder (.470, 11 HRs, 26 steals) attained first-team status after gaining second-team recognition a year ago as a junior.

Inlanders named to the second team were: Granite Hills first baseman KEVIN JAMES (.521, 46 RBI), Santana shortstop JEFF WOODS (.490), Mount Miguel pitcher-first baseman MIKE McLAUGHLIN (.489, 6-6) and El Capitan's NIK GARCIA (8-1, .394).

This team was selected by John Maffei and Terry Monohan of the North County Times, Tom Shanahan of Cal Hi-Sports, Greg Durrant, Nick Pellegrino and Jim Kiffel.

2004 All-East County Team
O'Sullivan garners top honor for second-straight year; Vickery recognized for best coaching job
EastCountySports.com

EL CAJON - Valhalla junior pitcher/third baseman SEAN O'SULLIVAN and El Capitan coach STEVE VICKERY were among the top award winners on the official 2004 All-East County Baseball team as selected by the EastCountySports.com staff.

O'Sullivan, who was named the East County Player of the Year for the second straight season, displayed his versatility as a hitter and a pitcher. He led all of San Diego County with a .617 (61 for 99) batting average and hammered a state-best 16 home runs. He also drove in 50 runs and scored 48. He struck out only two times in 124 plate appearances and hit safely in 29 of 31 games. His totals included 21 multi-hit games.

As a pitcher, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound right-hander compiled an 11-1 record with one save and 71 strikeouts in 71 1/3 innings.

The majority of Vickery's peers concurred that he did his best job of coaching this season. Losing his top pitcher to Tommy John surgery before the season began, and then to have his second-best pitcher have an "off year," Vickery developed two other pitchers and a  band of aggressive hitters to produce a share of the Grossmont North League crown and stunning 8-2 victory over top-seeded Valhalla in the SDCIF Division II championship game Saturday (June 5) at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

EastCountySports.com presented other awards to Rookie of the Year KYLE HELMHOLTZ of Santana; Most Improved to Monte Vista outfielder MARK COGLEY; and Unsung Hero to Grossmont's MITCHELL COLLINS.

Four of this year's first team picks are repeat winners, including Granite Hills first baseman KEVIN JAMES, who drove in a school record 46 runs to break his own record of 45 that he set the year before.

Other repeat first-team selections are O'Sullivan, Santana shortstop JEFF WOODS, and El Capitan shortstop JUSTIN SNYDER.

Moving up from last year's second team selections to first team recognition this spring are El Capitan's NIK GARCIA and Monte Vista's DALLAS HUBBARD.

18 are named to San Diego CIF Divisional teams

EastCountySports.com staff report

SAN DIEGO - Eighteen East County athletes have been named to the San Diego CIF Divisional teams as chosen by the San Diego County coaches.

Division I selections include Granite Hills pitcher-outfielder James Sinkes and Valhalla first baseman David Dennis on the first team; and Granite Hills second baseman Chad Williams and Eagles' first baseman Luke McRoberts on the second team. It was the second year in a row that Williams has received Division I recognition.

Sinkes, a senior, earned Grossmont South League Player of the Year honors with a 4-4 record and 3.04 ERA, along with a .371 batting average. Dennis (.450) ranked second to McRoberts (.485) in the Grossmont South batting derby.

The Division II picks on first team were: pitcher Ben Coon, right fielder Mark Dobbins and shortstop Aaron Garcia all of Grossmont; first baseman Kyle Phillips and outfielder Chris Walston of El Capitan. The second team choices were: catcher Jordan Abruzzo and outfielder Brandon Rauch of El Capitan; and catcher Trevor Pike and pitcher-first baseman Brant Rustich of Grossmont.

Phillips was selected East County Player of the Year with a .496 average, while Coon was selected the Grossmont North League Player of the Year, with a 9-3 record overall and a .349 batting average. Walston clubbed a state record
22 home runs and logged 60 RBI.

Dobbins crushed a Grossmont single-season record with 13 home runs, while Garcia earned first-team Division II honors for the second year in a row, as did Coon and Phillips. Pike (.350, 8 HR, 34 RBI) was a repeat second-team pick this year.

Santana pitcher-third baseman Hayden Penn of Santana was a first-team pick in Division III. Recognized more for his pitching, Penn posted a 5-4 record, 2.22 ERA, and struck out 85 batters in 66 innings.

East County batting champion Chris Denhart of Christian High was named to the 2002 San Diego CIF Division IV first team. He was one of four Patriots selected.

A senior second baseman, Denhart batted .505 with 5 home runs and 44 RBI for the Eastern League champion Patriots.

Christian junior first baseman/pitcher Daniel Magness was chosen to the Division IV first team for the second year in a row. Despite being unable to pitch for half the season due to an arm injury, the 6-foot-3, 205-pound left-hander came back to post an 8-1 record and a 1.80 ERA in addition to batting .438.

Patriots junior hurler Brian Schroeder, who ranked second in the county with 148 strikeouts, was elected to the Division IV first team after earning second team status as a sophomore. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound hard-throwing left-hander finished 11-4 with a 1.56 ERA this season.

Senior third baseman Nick Laughter batted .354 with 5 home runs and 37 RBI to land a second team Division IV berth.

All-San Diego CIF/Breitbard Hall of Champions Team

Phillips, Walston, Schroeder earn top accolades; Coon omitted

EastCountySports.com staff report

SAN DIEGO - No matter who does the picking, post-season honor squads often
create controversy. Deserving players are left off for one reason or another.
Some omissions are more glaring than others. For the record, four East County
athletes are included on the 2002 All-San Diego CIF/Breitbard Hall of
Champions Baseball Team, which was selected by a media panel.

On the positive side, El Capitan first baseman Kyle Phillips - the
EastCountySports.com East County Player of the Year - earned a first team
berth for the second straight season.

El Capitan outfielder Chris Walston, a second-team pick as a junior, gained
first-team status after belting a state-record 22 home runs this season.

Versatile Brian Schroeder of Christian was also selected to the 14-player
first team.

The only Inlander named to the second team was Grossmont High outfielder Mark
Dobbins, who clubbed a school-record 13 home runs, drove in 46 runs and hit
.438.

Talk about dramatic improvement . . . Phillips raised his batting average
from .420 to .496, doubled his home run total from 7 to 14, and drove in 46
runs - compared to logging 35 RBI a year ago. Another impressive stat is
Phillips hit safely in 56 of 68 games the past two seasons.

Walston broke the previous state home run record by two, and fell one short
of the San Diego CIF section mark for RBI with 60.

Schroeder, the lone underclassman of the East County quartet, tied for third
in the county with 11 victories, ranked second in strikeouts (148 in 89 2/3
innings) and posted a 1.56 ERA. When he wasn't on the mound, Schroeder played
first base and the outfield. He batted a solid .369 with 6 home runs and 14
stolen bases.

One player that is clearly missing from this list of standouts is Grossmont
senior pitcher-first baseman Ben Coon, who was a first team pick as a junior.

Granted, the Foothillers did not repeat as SDCIF Division II champions. But
that cannot be blamed on Coon, who finished 9-3 (compared to 9-4 a year ago)
with 3 saves. He batted .349 with 8 home runs and 41 RBI as a senior. That is
marked improvement over his .323 average and 21 RBI as a junior. Yes, he did
hit 9 home runs in 2001. But c'mon . . . the Foothillers don't win the
Grossmont North League championship and finish 24-9 without Coon leading the
way.

Of course, you can also make a strong case for Valhalla first baseman David
Dennis and Christian pitcher-first baseman Daniel Magness. But Coon is the
one who was truly slapped in the face.

Rancho Buena Vista's Jesse English was chosen the SDCIF/Breitbard Hall of
Champions Player of the Year. He is most deserving, considering he led his
team to the Division I championship while shutting down power-hitting Rancho
Bernardo three times along the way.

Note: The EastCountySports.com staff was not informed of the meeting. Several
other major media outlets were also not in attendance for the balloting, for
whatever reason.

2001 ALL-SDCIF DIVISION BASEBALL TEAMS

Metropoulos, Coon, Magness earn top performer awards

EastCountySports.com staff report

SAN DIEGO - Fourteen East County players have been selected to the 2001
All-San Diego CIF Division Baseball Team in balloting conducted by
representatives of the San Diego County baseball coaches.

Topping the list is Monte Vista third baseman/pitcher Joey Metropoulos, who
was voted Division II Player of the Year. Grossmont's Ben Coon was tabbed the
Division II Pitcher of the Year, while Christian High's Daniel Magness
received Pitcher of the Year honors for Division IV.

East County dominated the Division II selections, earning 6 of the 10 first
team berths. Joining Metropoulos and Coon on that first unit were Helix
pitcher/shortstop Sean Walker, Valhalla pitcher Daniel Bruckart, first
baseman Kyle Phillips of El Capitan, and Grossmont shortstop Aaron Garcia.

Inlanders named to the Division II second unit were Santana
pitcher/outfielder Michael Bass, Grossmont catcher Trevor Pike, El Capitan
pitcher Randy Aguiar and Patrick Henry shortstop Jonathan Robinson.

Granite Hills second baseman Chad Williams was the only East County player
included among the North County-dominated Division I selections. He made the
first unit.

Christian grabbed three berths on the Division IV team. Outfielder Andrew
Grogg joined Magness on the first team, while pitcher Brian Schroeder was a
second-team choice.

2001 ALL SAN DIEGO CIF/BREITBARD HALL OF CHAMPIONS BASEBALL TEAM

Metropoulos, Phillips, Coon selected All-Section
Walker, Walston, Puerile named to All-SDCIF/Breitbard second team

EastCountySports.com staff report

SAN DIEGO - Six East County players have been selected to the 2001 All-San
Diego CIF/Breitbard Hall of Champions Baseball Team, as selected by a panel
of area newspaper writers and broadcasters.

Inlanders named to the first team were East County Player of the Year Joey
Metropoulos of Monte Vista, junior first baseman Kyle Phillips of El Capitan,
and Grossmont High junior left-handed pitcher Ben Coon.

East County players chosen to the second team were Helix senior
pitcher/shortstop Sean Walker, El Capitan junior outfielder Chris Walston,
and Monte Vista junior center fielder Gino Puerile.

Metropoulos, a 16th-round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers, clubbed a
Grossmont Conference record 35 career home runs. The USC-bound third baseman
batted .386 with 133 hits in a four-year career.

Phillips, the brother of New York Mets minor league catcher Jason Phillips,
hit safely in 26 of the Vaqueros 33 games, compiling a .420 average with 7
home runs. He also led East County in doubles (13) and RBI (35).

Coon, who picked up two playoff victories in Grossmont's surge to the San
Diego CIF Division II championship, compiled a 1.57 ERA and struck out 84 in
84-2/3 innings. He also posted four shutouts and completed six of his 13
starts. He blanked Oceanside on three hits in the championship game.

The Baylor-bound Walker is a three-time All-East County pick, earning first
team as a junior and senior. In his four years as a pitcher, Walker compiled
a 23-11 record, 12 saves (tied for third on the SDCIF books), a 2.78 ERA, and
struck out 227 in 234 innings. He also played shortstop and batted .336 with
14 extra base hits and 18 RBI as a senior.

The 6-foot-6, 235-pound Walston was a major contributor to El Capitan's drive
to the Grossmont North League championship. At one stretch during the season
Walston went 12-for-25 with 6 home runs and 13 RBI.

Monte Vista speedster Puerile was the classic leadoff man, although the
Monarchs used him in several other capacities as well. He batted .377 and
accounted for 38 runs while stealing 13 bases.

Fallbrook left-handed pitcher Matt Chico, who celebrated his 18th birthday
Sunday (June 10), was named SDCIF Player of the Year by the Hall of Champions
media panel. The second-round draft pick of the Boston Red Sox finished the
season with a 10-1 record, a 0.84 ERA, and 116 strikeouts in 75 innings.

2001 ALL-EAST COUNTY TEAM

Top honors go to the Metro man

ECS.com staff report

EL CAJON - Few would dispute that Monte Vista's Joey Metropoulos is East
County's most complete baseball player.

Ask yourself this, What can't he do? He hits for power (a Grossmont
Conference record 35 career home runs), for average (.386 with 133 hits in a
four-year career), he can run (22 steals), can pitch (7-4, 2.20 ERA), can
play third base with Brooks Robinson-like skill.

So it should come as no surprise that the 6-foot-1, 215-pound senior has been
selected 2001 East County Player of the Year by the EastCountySports.com
staff.

The USC-bound Metropoulos has the rare distinction of earning All-East County
honors all four years of his prep career. He was the Rookie of the Year as a
freshman in 1998, and Player of the Year his sophomore and senior years. He
was hampered by a thumb injury most of his junior season, missing eight
games, yet still landed a second team All-East County berth.

El Capitan junior first baseman Kyle Phillips has been named 2001 East County
Rookie of the Year. He hit safely in 26 of the Vaqueros 33 games, compiling a
.420 average with 7 home runs. He also led East County in doubles (13) and
RBI (35).

Grossmont High's Rob Phillips, who held his team together despite key
injuries in mid-season, was chosen the 2001 East County Coach of the Year for
leading the Foothillers (23-10) to the San Diego CIF Division II
championships. It was the second SDCIF championship for Phillips'
Foothillers in the last five years.

Two other familiar faces to the All-East County team are Santana's Michael
Bass and Helix's Sean Walker.

It is the third consecutive season that Bass has garnered first team honors.
Although he has been a better-than-average hitter throughout his four-year
career, pitching has been the senior right-hander's forte as evidenced by his
22-10 record, 2.16 ERA, and 217 strikeouts in 246 innings. Bass, who was also
a record-breaking wide receiver in football and an All-League basketball
player, has signed to play baseball for USD.

The Baylor-bound Walker is a three-time All-East County pick, earning first
team as a junior and senior. Much like Bass, Walker is a double threat as he
also played shortstop, but the focal point of his game was on the mound. In
his four years on the Highlanders' hill, Walker compiled a 23-11 record, 12
saves (tied for third on the SDCIF books), a 2.78 ERA, and struck out 227 in
234 innings.

Moving up from second team to first team this season are Granite Hills junior
second baseman Chad Williams and Christian's sophomore pitcher Daniel
Magness. Williams finished third in the East County batting derby with a .398
average. His 41 hits tied him for second, and included 4 home runs and 7
doubles.

Magness ranked among the most unlucky pitchers in East County. He finished
with a 6-2 record and a pair of saves to go along with the Inland's finest
ERA of 1.29. Nine of his starts resulted in six complete games. He struck out
66 in 70-1/3 innings. Had it not been for some faulty fielding, he surely
would have picked up a couple more wins.

Of the 15 players named to the All-East County first team, nine are
underclassmen. On second team, eight of the 15 are underclassmen. That should
make for an exciting 2002 season.
