Matadors' Williams gets her due as area Player of Year
EastCountySports.com

EL CAJON -- Mount Miguel junior JERICA WILLIAMS has been selected the EastCountySports.com East County Player of the Year. The non-flashy yet stable performer helped the Matadors capture their 5th straight Grossmont South League championship and a third consecutive San Diego CIF Division II crown.

The 5-foot-10 Williams averaged 18.8 points, led East County in 3-point baskets, and garnered more than 7 rebounds per game.

EastCountySports.com Coach of the Year honors go to Santana's WADE VICKERY, who directed an overmatched group to the SDCIF Division III championship. It was the Sultans' 8th section crown under Vickery's tutelage.

Rookie of the Year honors as chosen by the EastCountySports.com staff go to Grossmont High sophomore THERESE RIEDEL, one of the area's top rebounders and shot blockers.

Co-Players Williams, Hurdle cap careers with east's highest honor
EastCountySports.com

EL CAJON - Steele Canyon senior guard RICHIE WILLIAMS has been named East County Boys Basketball Player of the Year for the second season in a row. One difference, though, is the talented 5-foot-10 Williams shares East County's top honor with gifted Helix senior LANCE HURDLE.

Each of these fabulous point guards rank among the elite East County statistical leaders. Williams is averaging 19.4 points,5.6 assists and an East County-best 4.5 steals per game. Hurdle is East County's leading scorer with a 24.3 average this season.

East County Coach of the Year recognition goes to Helix's JOHN SINGER, who captures the honor for the 7th time. Singer guided a green team with one standout performer at point guard to the San Diego CIF Division I championship and a 25-5 finish. Singer ranks fourth on the all-time SDCIF list for coaching victories with 449. He trails only El Camino's Ray Johnson (528), Chula Vista's Mike Collins (490), and Patrick Henry's Fritz Ziegenfuss (465).

East County Rookie of the Year honors goes to West Hills junior point guard KYLE HAMANN.

The injury-riddled Hamann was a solid contributor for the Grossmont North League champions when he was healthy.

Matadors' Williams is county Player of Year
EastCountySports.com

SAN DIEGO -- Going undefeated against every San Diego County opponent they faced this season, Mount Miguel not only captured the team championship in Division II, one member of the Matadors also was named one of the best.
Despite getting snubbed by league coaches, Mount Miguel junior forward JERICA WILLIAMS was tabbed the Player of the Year on the Breitbard All-CIF San Diego County team, as selected by the San Diego Sportswriters-Sportscasters Association, under the auspices of the San Diego Hall of Champions. In an All-East County vote among the finalists, Williams beat out El Capitan center ALLISON DUFFY for the county's top award.
Coincidentally, Duffy was also snubbed by league coaches, as both underclassmen finished second to teammates for league player of the year awards. They included senior center HEATHER MOLZEN of El Capitan, and senior guard GENEVIEVE COSTELLO of Mount Miguel, who both were tabbed to second-team, All-County berths. They were joined on the second team by junior forward JORDAN FRANEY from SDCIF Division III titlist Santana, while East County scoring leader JACLYN GOLDBARG of Grossmont was a third-team honoree.

Williams, Hurdle are All-CIF section first-team picks
East County Sports.com

SAN DIEGO -- In one of the most diverse selections in many years, with selections from all parts of the section, Chase Budinger of La Costa Canyon High was tabbed the county player of the year, as the Breitbard-All-CIF San Diego County team, as selected by the San Diego Sportswriters-Sportscasters Association, under the auspices of the San Diego Hall of Champions, was announced Saturday (Mar. 12).
Budinger captured the award on a split vote, with RICHIE WILLIAMS from SDCIF Division II champion Steele Canyon gaining a berth on the first team. He was joined by Helix senior guard LANCE HURDLE, who helped the Highlanders claim the SDCIF Division I title, giving the East County both of the major team championships and two of the five First Team berths.
Meanwhile, Cougars forward GEORGE CUNNINGHAM, the leading rebounder in the East County, earned a second-team berth from members of the media, giving the Grossmont Conference three of the top 10 players in the CIF-San Diego Section.
In addition, former Christian High forward TYRONE SHELLEY, who now plays for Crawford, earned a third-team berth.
