CUYAMACA COLLEGE

Burks buries 26 in opener, but Coyotes fall well short

EastCountySports.com staff report

LOS ANGELES - Freshman VALLI BURKS, a graduate of El Capitan High, made a big splash in her collegiate debut, scoring 26 points for Cuyamaca College Friday (Nov. 8) against Los Angeles Southwest. Burks included four 3-pointers in her totals, but the Coyotes still came up short, dropping their opener to the Cougars 75-56.

"We played up to our potential in the first half," said Burks, noting that Cuyamaca led 29-25 at the half. "In the second half key people fouled out, and although some people stepped up, there wasn't enough depth to come away with a victory."

DENISE BENNETT (Santana High) added 12 points for the Coyotes, while LISA BAKER added 9.

Cuyamaca travels to Los Angeles Pierce next Saturday (Nov. 16) for a 5 p.m. tipoff.
