Griffins' 10th season opens with rollicking home victory

EL CAJON - The Grossmont College women's soccer team got their 10th year anniversary season off to a very good start.

Two goals by Freshman Krystal Karsch led the Griffins to a 4-1 win over visiting Riverside in their home opener last Wednesday.

Karsch scored goals only two minutes apart in the first half.

Sophomore Valerie Reid made it 3-0 just before halftime on assists by Megan Hartnett (Grossmont HS) and Jessica Harris (Patrick Henry).

In the second half, sophomore Casey Simone (West Hills) scored on a 15-yard blast off an assist by Karsch.

Riverside scored a late goal to make the final score 4-1.

The next game for the Griffins is Friday Sept. 3, as they host Cochise Valley College from Arizona.  They hit the road next week with a match at Rio Hondo on Wednesday.

2003 CUYAMACA COYOTES - WOMEN

Neun, Wilson get opening markers in draw with SBCC

EastCountySports.com

EL CAJON -- Valhalla High products Robin Neun and Ashley Wilson scored goals
late in each half Wednesday (Aug. 27), lifting the Cuyamaca College Coyotes to
a 2-2 draw with visiting Santa Barbara City College in both teams' season
opener.

Neun closed the first half by nailing a direct free kick in 39th minute to
tie the contest 1-1. A similar script followed in the second half, as the
Coyotes erased a 2-1 deficit when forward Ashley Wilson converted in the 71st
minute.

"We're pretty young, so it's nice to see our team comeback like that each
time," said Neun, a sophomore forward. "I have confidence in this team and this
will help us mesh."

Wilson, who gained notoriety last March as an emergency goalie who won a CIF
playoff game in a record 13-round shootout, proved to be equally dazzling
along the front line. Taking a feed from Coyotes teammate Laurel Hanscom, Wilson
turned on a defender and left-footed a low shot just inside the far post.

"Laurel chipped the ball over my right shoulder toward the left side of the
net," recalled Wilson. "Then I made a couple of moves on the defender and took
the shot, which landed in the side-netting."

Lillian Underwood and Shannon Skuce (0-0-1) shared duties in goal for
Cuyamaca, each allowing just one goal in 40 minutes of play.

The Coyotes continued their three-game, season-opening homestand on Friday,
entertaining state power Cypress, but the Coyotes lost a 1-0 decision. The Chargers have advanced to the
last three state tournament final fours.

Long Beach City stuns Cuyamaca with fantastic finish

Freshman Kim Jents hit a side volley at 119:50 to snap the Coyotes' 17 game unbeaten streak. It was her 32nd goal of the season.

'Maca started off well as Lydia Castro's header had to be saved by GK Cari Delaney. The Coyotes showed they could match the state's top team as Natalie Parkin, Elizabeth Harns and Heather Copher all made runs down the flank.

'Maca generated 5 shots to Beach's 6 in the first 45 minutes. They also stood firm as they withstood 12 fouls by LBCC.

The second half saw the Vikings take more control. 'Maca kept the scoreboard even although Long Beach took 12
more shots and Lisa Baker made 6 saves. 'Maca did have a chance to win the match with 8 minutes left, as CC's set piece was flicked on by Shannon Christman. Lesa Lewis struck it firm, but Delaney made the point blank save to send game
into overtime.

The first overtime saw the defending state champs throw everything at 'Maca, posting 12 shots in 15 Minutes. Angela Simpson, Katie Handgis, Meredith Harns and Nichole Tunnell stood firm and Baker made 6 more saves. The second over-

Cuyamaca ends their season with an overall record of 17 wins, 2 losses and 4 ties.

"This has been Cuyamaca's best team everHead Coach, Sami B. Nedjar said. "The team won their first ever PCC Championship, they had a 17 game unbeaten streak and what a display they put on in their first trip ever to the playoffs. I can't tell you how happy I was with the team's play today. It is a shame that we couldn't pull off the upset of the year."

Long Beach City heads into the State Finals with a record of 22-1-0.

GROSSMONT GRIFFINS

Grossmont qualifies for postseason

With victories in four of its last six matches, the Grossmont College women's soccer team finished out the regular season on a strong note, earning a spot in the Southern California Regional playoffs. The Griffins (12-5-3 overall, 10-3-1 in the Pacific Coast Conference) will open the first round of the playoffs this Tuesday (Nov. 19) at Santa Barbara. The two teams met early in the season, with the Vaqueros scoring a 3-1 victory.

Griffs' program earns win No. 100

Grossmont College women's soccer program just reached a major milestone on Tuesday (Nov. 6) recording its 100th victory with a 4-0 win at Imperial Valley College.

The program started in 1995 by coach Howard Hawver.

During that span the program has produced one All-American, three All-Western Regional players and sent more than 20 players on to the next level of college soccer.

In 1996, the Griffins won the first annual Cuesta Cup
tournament which has become the premier Community College tournament in southern California. They have won the Pacific Coast Conference championship three times and reached the Southern California regional playoffs six out of
seven years. They have outscored their opponents 550-97 and built a .785 winning percentage.

Coyotes start off well against Grossmont

El Cajon - The Cuyamaca women's team opened Pacific Coast Conference play with a 2-1 win at Grossmont College on Friday.

The Coyotes started off strong with many chances at goal. Several shots were saved, some were just off target and one clipped off the crossbar. But the half-time score remained 0-0.

The second half was played more end-to-end with both teams creating chances.
Cuyamaca took the lead on a nice dribbling run run Lesa Lewis. When she got close to the penalty area, she played the ball left to Shannon Christman.
Christman made a nice left footed cross to Lydia Castro who put in her fifth goal of the year. Grossmont tied the score minutes later. But, with less than a minute left in the match, Lacy Lewis pounced on a free ball 30 yards out and lifted it over the Grossmont goalkeeper.
