Allen earns All-PCC first-team honors; Griffs ousted from postseason

EastCountySports.com

BUENA PARK - Sophomore first baseman LINDSEY ALLEN has been named to the
All-Southern California Regional team after earning All-Pacific Coast
Conference first-team recognition for the second year in a row. Allen's
honors come on the heels of Grossmont's elimination from the Southern
California Regional Tournament at Cypress College.

The Griffins (19-16-1) were knocked out of the SoCal Regionals via a 1-0 loss
to Ventura (30-15) on Monday (May 5). A day earlier, they fell to host and
No. 1 seeded Cypress (44-8) by a 6-2 score.

AURELIA KRUSE pitched a 5-hitter, walked none and struck out 4 in the loss to
Ventura, which won on an unearned run in the 5th inning. The Griffins, using
just one pitcher all season, managed to win 19 games, including a rare 4-2
victory over perennial champion Palomar on April 9 - the Comets' first loss
in four years.

VANESSA BARRON and BRIEANNA HARB each hit a double, accounting for half of
Grossmont's hits against Ventura.

The Griffins' DONNA GONZALES was 2-for-3 with a triple and one RBI in the
loss to Cypress.

Meanwhile, Grossmont coach RICK TRESTRAIL was named the Pacific Coast
Conference Coach of the Year.

In addition to Allen, the Griffins' KARLI BUXTON and DANIELLE CARRANZA were
selected to the All-PCC first team. Kruse and Gonzales were second-team
picks. DEANNA HELSING, KRYSTAL GONSALVES and Barron received honorable
mention recognition.

Playoff-bound Griffins battle Comets, but Poniktera has final say

EastCountySports.com

EL CAJON - Despite falling to perennial Pacific Coast Conference-champion
Palomar 5-3 and seeing their six-game winning streak end on Wednesday (April
23), the Grossmont Griffins have qualified for the Southern California
Regionals (May 3-4). The Griffins, however, have one more goal in mind for
Thursday's (April 24) regular-season game when they host Southwestern at 1
p.m.

A victory over the Jaguars will give Grossmont its fifth consecutive 20-win
season, which would be quite a stretch, considering the Griffins totaled only
28 wins from 1996 through 1998.

The host Griffins (19-13-1, 8-6) came close to knocking off Palomar for the
second game in a row, as they took a 3-1 lead into the 5th inning. But
Palomar pitcher Bonnie Poniktera spoiled the plans when she lined a three-run
home run past the center fielder, giving the Comets (32-16, 14-1) the lead.

It was a tough loss for Grossmont pitcher AURELIA KRUSE (17-13) who scattered
8 hits and allowed only 2 earned runs.

Grossmont broke a 1-1 tie with 2 runs in the 3rd against Palomar. CRYSTAL
GONSALVES reached on catcher's interference and KARLI BUXTON walked.
DANIELLE CARRANZA hit into a fielder's choice, Gonsalves being forced out at
third. The runners moved up on DONNA GONZALES' groundout, setting the stage
for LINDSEY ALLEN's two-run single to center.

Grossmont's only other hit was a single by DEANNA HELSING. Poniktera did get
a bit of revenge from Helsing, as she struck out the Griffins' sophomore
shortstop in the 6th inning. Helsing had gone 97 at-bats without striking out
before going down swinging against Poniktera.

Griffins win City College Tournament in short order

EastCountySports.com

SAN DIEGO - The Grossmont Griffins needed to play only nine innings to earn
two victories and claim their second straight San Diego City College
Tournament championship on Monday (April 14). The Griffins defeated San
Bernardino Valley 8-2 in 5 innings and clobbered Imperial Valley 13-5 in 4
innings as rain and muddy field conditions at Hourglass Park caused the games
and the schedule to be shortened drastically.

Grossmont (19-12-1) is riding its longest winning streak of the season of six
in a row.

AURELIA KRUSE handled all the pitching for the Griffins, running her record
to 17-12. She also contributed at the plate with a two-run home run against
IVC.

Freshman third baseman KARLI BUXTON continued her torrid hitting for the
Griffins with 4 hits, 4 runs and 3 RBI in 7 at-bats in the twinbill. She has
15 hits in her last 22 at-bats - a .682 average.

DONNA GONZALES and DEANNA HELSING were each 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI
in Grossmont's romp over San Bernardino. CRYSTAL GONSALVES whacked a 2-run
double for the Griffins.

The Griffs used a 9-run 2nd inning to break open the game with IVC. BRIEANNA
HARB was 3-for-3 with a triple, 2 runs and 2 RBI, while DANIELLE CARRANZA was
3-for-4 with a double, 2 runs and one RBI.

Grossmont continues its quest for a second place finish in the Pacific Coast
Conference with home games against Southwestern (Tuesday, April 22) and
Palomar (Wednesday (April 23). Both games start at 3 p.m.

A sweep would assure the Griffins of finishing second. A split would clinch
at least a tie, and could lead to a PCC playoff game against San Diego Mesa
should the teams end the regular season deadlocked for the runner-up slot.

Buxton's grand in Griffins' victory over Arabs

EastCountySports.com

IMPERIAL- For a lead-off hitter, Grossmont College's KARLI BUXTON packs a lot
of punch. The freshman third baseman out of El Capitan High belted a grand
slam Friday (April 11) to help lead the visiting Griffins to a 6-4 Pacific
Coast Conference victory over Imperial Valley College.

Buxton, who has generated 11 hits in her last 15 at-bats, was 2-for-4 against
the Arabs. She whacked her second home run of the year after the Griffins
loaded the bases on a single by DEANNA HELSING, an IVC error and VANESSA
BARRON's base hit.

The blazing Buxton is batting at a .511 clip (23 for 45) against conference
pitching and is hitting .400 overall (38-for-95).

LINDSEY ALLEN was 3-for-4 for the Griffins (17-12-1, 8-5), who maintained
their grip on second place in the PCC standings with their 4th straight
victory. Buxton, Barron and Helsing chipped in with 2 hits apiece for the
Griffins, who totaled 12 for the game.

Grossmont's AURELIA KRUSE turned in another complete game effort, despite
allowing 8 hits and 4 earned runs.

Next up for the Griffins is the San Diego City College Tournament Monday
(April 14) through Wednesday (April 16).

Griffins hand Comets first conference loss with four runs

EastCountySports.com

EL CAJON - Palomar's annual pilgrimage to the Pacific Coast Conference
championship met with a little resistance Wednesday (April 9) as the
second-place Grossmont Griffins defeated the visiting Comets 4-2. It was
Palomar's first PCC loss of the season and the Comets' first setback in four
years. Grossmont dealt the Comets their last defeat.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Griffins (16-12-1, 7-5)
rallied for all 4 of their runs in the 4th inning.

Grossmont capitalized on a Palomar error and a single by DEANNA HELSING to
get things rolling. With one out, VANESSA BARRON was hit by a pitch to load
the bases. BRIEANNA HARB singled up the middle to score LINDSEY ALLEN and
Helsing with the tying runs.

KARLI BUXTON, the PCC Female Player of the Week, then struck the decisive
blow with a two-run double to right-center.

Buxton, who has collected hits in 9 of her last 11 at-bats, ranks No. 2 in
the conference with a .512 average. The freshman third baseman out of El
Capitan High is batting a team-best .396 overall.

Grossmont's AURELIA KRUSE pitched a 5-hitter and struck out 6 en route to her
14th win.

"It was fun throwing against them, but, at the same time, nerve-wracking,"
Kruse admitted. "The dugout was so alive when we batted around (in the 4th
inning). It felt super to pitch with a lead against them. No way was I going
to let us lose after that."

Next up for the Griffins is a desert junket to Imperial Valley College for a
3 p.m. PCC encounter on Friday (April 11).

Buxton has second-straight 4-for-4 game as Griffs win

EastCountySports.com staff report

SAN DIEGO -Not too many teams have a better leadoff hitter than Grossmont
College's KARLI BUXTON. The freshman third baseman went 4-for-4 for the
second straight game Wednesday (April 2) as the visiting Griffins clipped San
Diego City College 6-1 to maintain their grip on second place in the Pacific
Coast Conference.

points - to .398 - this week. All four of her hits at SDCC came in innings
when Grossmont scored.

She singled and scored on DONNA GONZALES' triple in the 1st inning, doubled
in a run in the 2nd and her RBI single in the 4th gave Grossmont a 4-0 edge.
In the 6th inning, Buxton doubled and scored on DANIELLE CARRANZA's two-base

Race for second could be Griffins' after another comeback

EastCountySports.com staff report

EL CAJON - Although perennial state powerhouse Palomar is once again in a
class by itself - well ahead of the Pacific Coast Conference pack - the
Grossmont Griffins have maneuvered their way into second place despite having
perhaps the leanest pitching staff in the state.

With the score knotted at 3-3, the Griffins staged a two-out, 4-run rally in
the bottom of the 5th inning to claim a 7-3 victory over visiting San Diego
Mesa in Monday's (Mar. 31) battle for second place in the PCC.

Consecutive two-out singles by KRYSTAL GONSALVES, KARLI BUXTON and DANIELLE
CARRANZA produced the go-ahead run for the Griffins. An RBI double by DONNA
GONZALES made it 4-2 and LINDSAY ALLEN's two-run single gave Grossmont its
final margin of victory.

Allen, a sophomore out of Helix High, ripped a two-run double to give
Grossmont a 2-0 edge in the first inning.

Buxton, the Griffins' leadoff hitter, was 4-for-4, scoring 2 runs and raising
her season average to a team-high .369.

Strong-armed AURELIA KRUSE limited Mesa to 2 earned runs en route to another
complete game. She is 12-12 for the Griffins, who are 14-12-1 overall and 5-5
in the PCC.

AURELIA KRUSE.

The Griffins (13-12-1, 4-5), who collected 8 hits to the Jaguars' 5, avoided

Griffins on Kruse control after pitcher escapes snowstorm

EastCountySports.com staff report

SAN DIEGO - So excited that pitcher AURELIA KRUSE plowed her way out of a
Colorado snow storm to arrive 30 minutes before Wednesday's (Mar. 19) game,
the Grossmont Griffins scored a season-high 9 runs in the top of the 1st
inning and continued on for an 11-7 Pacific Coast Conference victory at San
Diego Mesa College.

Credit Kruse's father for the save. He drove 20 hours each way to bring his
daughter to the field in time to pitch a complete-game victory.

Obviously a bit fatigued from the trip, Kruse gave up 5 earned runs and 8
hits, but did log 8 strikeouts en route to her 9th win in 15 decisions.

Grossmont (11-6-1, 3-3) sent 14 batters to the plate in the 1st inning, but
the Olympians crept back to within 9-7 before the Griffins locked up the
victory with runs in the 5th and 7th frames.

KARLI BUXTON was 4-for-4 in the lead-off spot for the Griffins, while LYNDSAY
ALLEN was 3-for-5 with a double and 3 RBI. CRYSTAL GONSALVES was 2-for-3.

Griffins duel Santa Ana to tie

EastCountySports.com staff report

SANTA ANA - After an impressive 27-11 finish a year ago, the Grossmont Griffins hope they have enough pitching to match that performance this

AURELIA KRUSE pitched all 8 innings for the Griffins, scattering 11 hits while striking out 6.

Imperial Valley no match for Grossmont attack

EastCountySports.com staff report

IMPERIAL - Alexis Powell narrowly missed hitting for the cycle, and coach
Rick Trestrail collected his 99th victory at Grossmont College Monday (April
15), as the Griffins blanked Imperial Valley College 8-0 in a Pacific Coast
Conference contest.

The Griffins (26-8, 9-3) collected 17 hits in the lop-sided victory over the
Arabs (17-13, 5-7) in the desert. Chalese Dunton, the second batter of the
game, set the tone with a booming double to dead-center field. She scored on
Powell's single to set the onslaught in motion. Powell eventually scored on
Lindsey Allen's base hit, making it 2-0 after the opening frame.

Grossmont pitcher Margaret Hipwell (25-8), who twirled a 3-hitter while
walking none and striking out 2, doubled and moved to third on Katie Snyder's
single in the second inning. Hipwell scored on Dunton's ground out before the
Griffins loaded the bases on a walk to Powell and a base hit by Allen.

Andrea Giamanco and Deanna Helsing followed with RBI singles to make it 5-0.

In the sixth inning Powell tripled to left-center field. Allen then blooped a
single to center, increasing the Griffins lead to 6-0.

An inning later, Danielle Dickerson singled and stole second. Powell smashed
another shot through the 35 mph wind to the fence in center field. By the
time the IVC outfielders retrieved Powell's ball, she had raced all the way
around the bases for an inside-the-park, 2-run homer.

Grossmont has two more road games this week - Wednesday (April 17) at San
Diego Mesa, and Friday (April 19) at Palomar. Both games start at 3 p.m.

Griffins have chances, but Comets nearer to title

EastCountySports.com staff report

EL CAJON - Reality found the Grossmont Griffins on Wednesday (April 3) when
the Palomar College Comets came to town to all but assure themselves of
wrapping up a 17th straight Pacific Coast Conference championship.

Crystalie Wolfe blanked the Griffins 3-0 on a 6-hitter, snapping Grossmont's
9-game winning streak. Palomar (33-4, 9-0) now owns a 3-game lead over the
Griffins with six games remaining.

Despite out-hitting the Comets 6-5, the Griffins (23-8, 6-3) led to their own
destruction by committing 5 errors. All three of Palomar's runs were unearned.

Grossmont pitcher Margaret Hipwell (22-8), the Pacific Coast Conference
Player of the Week last week, limited the Comets to 5 hits, while striking
out 3 and walking none.

To add to their frustration, the Griffins left the bases loaded in the 1st
inning and stranded runners at second and third in the 3rd inning.

Griffins' party ends in City tournament championship

EastCountySports.com staff report

MIRA MESA - Grossmont College completed a five-game sweep to capture the
championship of the 8th annual San Diego City Knights Spring Break Tournament
Tuesday (March 26), edging Rio Hondo 5-4 in the semifinals before riddling
Reedley 10-2 in the title tilt at Hourglass Park.

The two-day surge inflated the Griffins' current winning streak to nine - one
more than their previous longest of the season. Grossmont (23-7) is closing
in on the school record for victories in a season.

GROSSMONT 5, RIO HONDO 4 - This was the toughest game in the tournament for
the Griffins, who appeared to have the situation in hand when they broke a
2-2 deadlock with three runs in the top of the 7th inning.

Danielle Dickerson launched the game-winning rally with a triple. Singles by
Chalese Dunton and Alexis Powell gave the Griffins a 3-2 edge. Lindsey Allen
added an RBI single.

The decisive run came across when Andrea Giamanco "took one for the team"
(was hit by a pitch) with the bases-loaded to force in Powell with what
proved to be the winning run.

The Roadrunners (16-16) scored twice in the bottom of the 7th , but saw the
game end - when they had the tying and winning runs on base - because of an
administrative out. The ball was in the circle when a Rio Hondo runner
attempted to steal and was ruled out.

Dickerson led the Griffins with 3 hits and 2 runs in 4 at-bats. Deanna
Helsing slugged a solo home run and finished 2-for-4. Dunton also had two
hits and scored a run.

GROSSMONT 10, REEDLEY 2 - The championship didn't live up to its billing as
the Griffins batted around in the 3rd and 4th innings to turn the game into
a rout. Play was halted after 5 innings due to the mercy rule.

Katie Snyder, making a rare start, was 2-for-2 with two RBI and a pair of
walks for the Griffins. Allen chimed in with a 2-for-3 effort, which included
a double and 2 RBI. Pitcher Margaret Hipwell was also 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.

Grossmont will take a week off before hosting Palomar on Wednesday (April 3)
at 3 p.m.

The Grossmont College Griffins were expected to struggle a bit this spring
with an inexperienced roster that included just two sophomores. But the
Griffins surprised many by turning in their third consecutive 20-win season.

Coach Rick Trestrail's team was led by first baseman Alexis Powell, who
batted .425 and led the team in home runs (four) and RBI (22) and was the
team's lone first-team All-PCC choice.

Four other Griffins received second-team all-conference honors: third baseman
Christine Edwards (.440, 14 RBI), left fielder Andrea Giamanco (.432, 13
RBI), shortstop Maribel Delgadillo (.429), and pitcher Randi Allen, who has
posted a 13-6 mark and a 2.67 ERA, and also boasts a .420batting average.

total of 28 games the previous three seasons combined (1996-98).

Long Beach City (36-2-1, 15-0) won its 10th consecutive South Coast
Conference championship and, under seventh-year head coach Shellie McCall,
the Vikings seek their second state title. They fell short at the last hurdle
a year ago, losing to Palomar in the championship game.

Long Beach has not lost in its last 26 games (25-0-1) and has outscored
opponents 267-24 on the year. Included in the recent streak are two victories
over PCC champion Palomar.

Leading the way for Long Beach offensively are a pair of All-State
selections: first baseman Monnaye Bernal (.382, 46 RBI) and center fielder
Denise Perez (.465, 42 runs, 16 steals). Second baseman Monique Palacios
(.390, 28 RBI) was an All-Southern California choice, and a deep lineup also
gets significant contributions from left fielder Sha Oliver (.330, 32 runs,
12 steals), right fielder Becky Schueller (.364, 27 RBI), pitcher/designated
