Griffins end year with pair of dominating wins, have slim playoff hopes
EastCountySports.com

EL CAJON - By closing the Pacific Coast Conference season with three consecutive victories, the Grossmont Griffins earned a tie for second place with Imperial Valley and a slim shot at earning a berth in Southern California Regional playoffs. Quite a turn of events was this final week of the regular season.

After smothering San Diego City 12-2 on Friday (Apr. 22 in a game not reported to EastCountySports.com), the Griffins concluded the campaign by slapping San Diego Mesa 9-2 on Tuesday (Apr. 26).

Despite an overall mark of 16-11, which includes a 10-5 ledger against PCC foes, it is unlikely that the Griffins will gain an at-large berth into the postseason. None the less, Grossmont coach RICK TRESTRAIL plans to attend the SoCal tourney seeding meeting this weekend.

The main dig against the Griffins is they lost the season series to IVC 2-1. Only the top two finishers are guaranteed a post-season position.

DOMINIQUE DeLUCA (13-5) limited the Olympians to four hits and did not allow an earned run in the finale. She was also 2-for-3 at the plate with 2 RBI.

"It was a tough year for us," said Grossmont assistant coach ANA LANDEROS. "I believe we finished higher in league than we expected. The girls deserve all the credit."

Griffins assured third-place finish after crushing Jags
EastCountySports.com

EL CAJON - Grossmont College came from behind to whip visiting Southwestern College 7-1 in a Pacific Coast Conference game Wednesday (Apr. 20). The victory assures the Griffins of a third-place finish in the conference.

"After losing both games last week, we really needed to have this one," Grossmont assistant coach ANA LANDEROS said.

LEAH TOURNEY doubled home BRE ALFORD and JESSICA YONALLY to break a 1-1 tie and cap a three-run 3rd inning.

Grossmont (14-11, 8-5) made it 4-1 in the 5th inning as Alford tripled over the center fielder's head and scored on Yonally's single.

Yonally later punched in the Griffins' final run of a 3-run 6th with a single.

DOMINIQUE DeLUCA scattered 7 hits to roll her record to 11-5.

Grossmont has two games remaining - Friday (Apr. 22) against San Diego City College at Morley Field and Tuesday (Apr. 26) against San Diego Mesa at home. Both games start at 3 p.m.

Griffins lose key PCC contest to Imperial Valley
EastCountySports.com

EL CAJON - A third-place finish in the Pacific Coast Conference is the best the host Grossmont College Griffins can hope for after falling to second-place Imperial Valley 4-3 in Friday's (Apr.15) PCC action.

Grossmont-s DOMINQUE DeLUCA deserved a better fate as she rationed the Arabs (14-7-1, 9-4) to 9 hits and 2 earned runs but still came up short.

With three games remaining, the Griffins (13-11, 7-5), need to win only one game to secure third place and a winning record.

Grossmont hosts Southwestern on Wednesday (Apr. 20) at 3 p.m., face San Diego City at Morley Field on Friday (Apr. 22) before closing out the campaign on Tuesday, Apr.26 by hosting San Diego Mesa.

Comets rough up Griffins again
EastCountySports.com

EL CAJON - Palomar College, runaway leaders in the Pacific Coast Conference race and odds-on favorites to take the state title, bowled over the host Grossmont College Griffins like a wrecking ball 12-0 on Wednesday (Apr. 13). Palomar (23-4, 10-0) has pulverized all PCC foes to cross its path.

The Comets have clubbed the Griffins (13-10, 7-4) by a composite 41-0 score in their three meetings this season. The good news is Grossmont does not have to face Palomar again this spring.

The Griffins' only hit in their latest bout with heavyweight Palomar was a 4th inning single by ANGELA VIETS.

"Palomar has beaten us pretty bad three times this season," understated Grossmont assistant coach ANA LANDEROS.

Next up for the Griffins is a Friday (Apr. 15) home game against Imperial Valley at 3 p.m.

DeLuca complete game gives Griffins sixth-straight victory
EastCountySports.com

SAN DIEGO - DOMINIQUE DELUCA pitched a complete-game 5-hitter, walked none and struck out 3 to carry the visiting Grossmont College Griffins to a 2-1 Pacific Coast Conference victory over San Diego Mesa College. It was the 6th straight win for the Griffins (13-9, 7-3), who stand third in the PCC.

All of the runs in the game were scored in the 2nd inning.

BREEANA ALFORD provided the spark for the Griffins with a bunt single and stole second.  ANGELA VIETS walked. JESSICA YONALLY grounded into a fielder's choice, which forced Alford at third.

Freshman JADE SHIPP was then hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Mesa (9-20-1, 3-7) had a shot at an inning-ending double play on an ensuing ground ball. The Olympians got a force at second base, but the return throw to first base missed its mark. Two runs scored on the error.

Shipp has now been hit eight times in her last three games, including a national-collegiate record 5 rimes against SDCC on Wednesday.

The Griffins play a pair of home games next week, facing Palomar on Wednesday (Apr. 13) and Imperial Valley on Friday (Apr. 15). Both games start at 3 p.m.

Knights batter Shipp, Griffins batter Knights
EastCountySports.com

EL CAJON - Grossmont College freshman JADE SHIPP took one for the team - 5 times in fact - as the Griffins knocked out visiting San Diego City College 15-4 in Wednesday's (Apr. 6) Pacific Coast Conference encounter.

Shipp's bruises are a record for junior college softball. More than that, historians are all but certain that Michelle Cowan's hitting Shipp in all five of her at-bats is a record that includes NCAA and NAIA.

Meanwhile, back to the game. Winning pitcher DOMINIQUE DELUCA pitched a complete-game 4-hitter and went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI.

Grossmont's JESSICA YONALLY banged out a double and 2 singles while scoring 3 runs and driving in a 4th.

In all, seven Grossmont batters were hit by a pitch as SDCC's Cowan also walked 10 and gave up 10 hits.

Next up for the Griffins (12-9, 6-3) is a PCC game at San Diego Mesa Friday (Apr. 8) at 3 p.m.

Griffins no match for powerful Palomar
EastCountySports.com

SAN MARCOS -- Without a doubt the Grossmont Griffins would like to cancel any further meetings with Pacific Coast Conference powerhouse Palomar College. For the second time in as many meetings, the Comets drubbed the visiting Griffins 15-0 Friday afternoon (Mar.18).

The Comets did most of their damage in the 1st inning, scoring 14 runs off the two Grossmont pitchers. In their first get together on March 2, Palomar pulverized the Griffins (7-9, 4-3) 14-0.

Weather permitting, Grossmont will travel to Hemet on Saturday (Mar. 19) for games against Mt. San Jacinto, Rio Hondo and Los Angeles Mission colleges.

Grossmont's best outing of campaign results in sixth-inning rally for win
EastCountySports.com

EL CAJON - In what was probably their finest game of the season, the Grossmont Griffins scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to upend visiting San Diego Mesa 4-3 in Wednesday's (Mar. 16) Pacific Coast Conference action.

The Griffins (7-8, 4-2) turned this one around with a two-out rally in the bottom of the 6th inning. BRITTANY MYTINGER hoisted a two-out double over the left fielder's head and DOMINIQUE DeLUCA followed with a walk.

ANGELA VIETS then delivered one of the biggest hits of the season for Grossmont, as her double drove in Mytinger and DeLuca with the tying and winning runs in the 6th.

DeLuca spun a complete game 4-hitter and did not allow an earned run.

Next up for the Griffins is a second shot at perennial power Palomar in San Marcos on Friday (Mar. 18) at 3 p.m.

Grossmont defeats Southwestern 4-2

EL CAJON -- Most of the so-called experts counted out the Grossmont Griffins before the first pitch was served. While the Griffins have little to no chance of unseating perennial Palomar as the Pacific Coast Conference champions, coach RICK TRESTRAIL's Griffins plan to make waves.

KIM WHITLOW blasted a 3-run double in the first inning and DOMINIQUE DeLUCA made it stand up with a complete game pitching effort.

Griffins split pair with IVC
EastCountySports.com

IMPERIAL - The visiting Grossmont Griffins found some dry weather for Friday's (Mar. 4) Pacific Coast Conference double-header at Imperial Valley College (7-3,3-1). The Griffins gained a split, swapping shutouts.

Grossmont got only two runners on base in game one as the Arabs claimed a 9-0 nod. In game two, DOMINQUE DeLUCA pitched a 4-hit shutout as Grossmont won 5-0.

The key statistic of the twinbill came in the 4th inning of the second game with two outs and the Griffins leading 4-0. It involved Grossmont shortstop JADE SHIPP. The sophomore fouled off 20 consecutive pitches before drawing a walk.

Next up for the Griffins (4-8, 1-2) is a PCC home game against Southwestern on Wednesday (Mar.9) at 3 p.m.

Sun shines, but Ventura dampens Griffins' spirits in five
EastCountySports.com

SAN DIEGO --The rain has caused all of the softball teams in Southern California a season's worth of problems in less than a month. But the Griffins, taking advantage of a couple of days of consistent sunshine, battled back from a 3-1 deficit Friday (Feb.25) only to lose to Ventura College 4-3 on the strength of Julie Navarro's solo home run in the bottom of the 5th inning. The game was halted at that point due to a prearranged time limit.

Grossmont (2-6), which hosts Allan Hancock College of Santa Maria on Saturday (Feb. 26) at 2 p.m., was paced by the hitting of DOMINIQUE DeLUCA who garnered 3 of the Griffins' 7 hits. JESSICA YONALLY also had a pair of hits for the Griffins.

Griffins are swept despite rallies against MSJC
EastCountySports.com

HEMET - The Grossmont Griffins staged two 7th-inning rallies here Friday (Feb. 4). Both of them fell short as host Mount San Jacinto College swept a non-conference doubleheader over the Griffins, 6-3 and 8-7.

Griffins pitcher DOMINQUE DeLUCA was 4-for-8 in the twinbill, driving in two runs and scoring twice herself. She was tagged with the loss in the first game, however. JESSICA YONALLY whacked a pair of doubles in the opener.

Grossmont's KIM WHITLOW was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a triple in the nightcap.  She drove in two runs.

Despite pounding out five extra-base hits and receiving six walks, the Griffins were dealt their 4th loss in five starts in the nightcap.

Grossmont meets El Camino Tuesday (Feb. 8) at Morley Field at 1 p.m.

Griffins make contact, but can't get hits against Santa Ana
EastCountySports.com

EL CAJON - This is a game that Grossmont College coach RICK TRESTRAIL would just as soon forget. The visiting Santa Ana College Dons rocked the Griffins 8-0 Thursday (Feb. 3) at Grossmont.

While the Dons were pounding out 11 hits, the Griffins were generating just two.

"We just couldn't find any holes and they played good defense," said Grossmont assistant coach ANA LANDEROS. "Their pitcher didn't have much but we just couldn't hit her."

Sophomore CHELSEA McKEEVER (Mountain Empire) had 10 strikeouts for the Griffins.

"Chelsea pitched OK but she would get behind in the count and they would sit on her," said Landeros.

Seven innings is the longest McKeever has pitched in two seasons at Grossmont.

Grossmont's hits were singles by freshman JESSICA YONALLY (Valhalla) in the 1st inning and sophomore catcher JADE SHIPP (Mount Miguel) in the 6th.

Grossmont (1-2) travels to Mt. San Jacinto for a double-header Friday (Feb. 4) beginning at 1 p.m.

Griffins fall behind, then rally falls just short
EastCountySports.com

LONG BEACH - For what was supposed to be a "down" or "off" year for the Grossmont College softball team, coach RICK TRESTRAIL's Griffins are starting the year with a little more pizzazz than predicted.

Coming off a powerful 26-14-2 season a year ago, the Griffins were ticketed for a rebuilding season this spring.

Grossmont put the squeeze on Orange Coast in the season opener and then hit the road and nearly upset one of the perennial state powers Tuesday (Feb. 1) at Long Beach City College before falling 4-3.

After falling behind 4-0 in the first 4 innings, the Griffins scrambled back to shave the deficit to one run before running out of time.

"We could have had them," said Grossmont assistant coach ANA LANDEROS. "Our bats came alive too late. Coach Trestrail was really aggressive. But mentally, I think we were intimidated."

In 2005 despite an atypical season under head coach Shellie McCall, the LBCC Vikings made their 13th straight postseason appearance, but failed to qualify for the state championship tournament for the first time since 1996.

It appears that the Vikings are geared for a return to the limelight.

Grossmont hosts Santa Ana on Thursday (Feb. 3) at 3 p.m. and then hits the road for a twinbill against Mount San Jacinto on Friday (Feb. 4) in Hemet.

DeLuca dodges drops to spin season-opening one-hitter
East County Sports.com

EL CAJON - Grossmont College freshman pitcher DOMINIQUE DeLUCA dodged the rain drops in Friday's (Jan. 28) season-opener, spinning a 1-hitter as the Griffins rocked visiting Orange Coast College 11-1 in the first game of a scheduled double-header. The second game was postponed as the rain intensified, and the game probably won't be played until next week.

DeLuca also went 1-for-3 and scored 3 runs. ANGELA VIETS pounded out a double and two singles in 4 at-bats, while KIM WHITLOW chipped in with an RBI double and a sacrifice fly.

Grossmont collected only 6 hits, but capitalized on 9 walks and 9 passed balls to turn the game into a rout.

DeLuca finished her complete game effort with 6 strikeouts and 4 walks.

Grossmont travels to Long Beach for a non-conference game on Tuesday (Feb. 1) at 3 p.m.

Griffins hopeful to replace stars, achieve prior successes
Special to EastCountySports.com

By John O. Rollo

EL CAJON -- The Grossmont College women's softball team will begin the 2005 season with a pair of doubleheaders this weekend. On Friday (Jan. 28) the Griffins play host to Orange Coast College at 1 p.m. On Saturday they will take on Chaffey College (11 a.m. start).

For even the most optimistic and ardent Griffin followers the upcoming campaign can only be described as a season of hope.

"We lost quite a few key players from last year's team," said Grossmont head coach RICK TRESTRAIL, who takes a 148-67-3 career record into his ninth season with the Griffins. "They were the type of players that you just don't replace. We will miss them all."

Sophomore CHELSEA McKEEVER (Mountain Empire) and freshman DOMINIQUE DELUCA (Santana) will attempt to offset the biggest loss of all, All-Pacific Coast Conference and All-State pitcher MELISSA BARON. Trestrail expects both McKeever, who pitched briefly for the Griffins in 2004, and Deluca to equally share the mound chores, especially early in the season.

"Weâ're going to give both pitchers a chance to get significant innings in the beginning of the season," Trestrail states. "We play quite a few doubleheaders and three-way contests and I don't want to put too much pressure on just one pitcher."

Trestrail likes the make-up of his 12-player roster.

"They are a hard-working bunch," he says. "They have a great attitude and have been a pleasure to coach. I realize we have quite a few holes to fill and we will spend the early season games moving players around until we find their best positions. We need to find a way to develop more consistency."

Trestrail expects his Griffins to be successful offensively.

"Collectively, we are a scrappy bunch," he believes. "We will battle teams and should have the ability to score a few runs."

Leading the way will be a trio of sophomores, JADE SHIPP (Mount Miguel), ASHLEY SAMPO (El Capitan) and KIM WITLOW (El Capitan). Shipp was last season's starting catcher and will see much action there as well as at shortstop. Sampo saw much time in right field in 2004 and will be making the switch to left field this season. Witlow occupied both second and third base last season and will again play both spots this season.

Trestrail has piloted the Griffins to second-place finishes in the Pacific Coast Conference in all but one of his seasons as the team leader, a spot that also advanced his teams to the state playoffs each season. He knows such an achievement in 2005 will be a difficult assignment.

"We have a tough road ahead of us, a difficult task," he said. "Our schedule is, potentially, an intimidating one and to advance as we have in the past will not be easy.  It is a huge mountain we have ahead of us to climb. It is, however, a mountain we can climb. I truly believe this."
