SANTEE - Revenge is rarely more satisfying
than when paying back an old debt.
The gratification from avenging a loss is right up there next
to winning a
championship. Emotionally, it can be a springboard to greater
achievements.
At least Mount Miguel coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL would like to think
so.
A 17-5 second quarter burst propelled the
Matadors past Poway 57-40 in
Monday's (Dec. 30) consolation championship game of the Santana/Horsman
Automotive Christmas Classic.
Quite a turnaround from the Dec. 18 meeting
won by the Titans 46-34. Free
throw ratios were decidedly lop-sided (3-of-6 for the Matadors
compared to
the Titans' 16-for-22).
"We talked about switching this around," Sandoval said.
That talk apparently helped, as the Matadors
converted 15 of 21 at the line,
compared with 6-for-14 for Poway.
KAYLA HENRY rang up 17 points and collected 14 caroms for the Matadors (11-2).
"Henry had a good game tonight,"
Sandoval said. "Both of our big girls -
Henry and (IJAL) BARNES) - did extremely well tonight."
Barnes' numbers corroborated Sandoval's
praise as they showed her with 17
points and 8 rebounds.
"Barnes had a very good tournament.
These last four games she did a much
better job of just moving the ball and sharing the ball,"
Sandoval said.
GENEVIEVE COSTELLO clicked on 10 of 12 free
throws on her way to a 13-point
finish. She also contributed 4 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 steals.
One of the major reasons for the Matadors
new balance is the return of
CHRISTINE FITZGERALD to the squad.
"When Christine first returned (from
knee surgery), the team was relying on
her too much, and she wasn't ready for it yet," Sandoval
said. "Since then
everybody has being doing their part to carry the game. Our scoring
was
balanced over our last seven games. It's made us a better team."
Other Miguel scoring: Fitzgerald 6, Jerica Williams 2, Natasha Edwards 2.

SANTANA 55, ORANGE GLEN 46 - Playing with one wing down (the absence of injured AMANDA KRISMER) didn't make winning Monday's (Dec. 30) third place game of the Santana/Horsman Automotive Christmas Classic any easier.
"We were down 7-0 early, looking confused, going 'Where's Amanda?'" said Sultans coach WADE VICKERY, referring to the fact that the 5-foot-11 senior forward sat out the game, nursing a deep bruise suffered earlier in the tournament.
ROBIN APPLEBY (6 points, 5 rebounds) started in Krismer's place and "did a good job," as did AIME LEACH (7 rebounds), who spelled Appleby.
"We played just great defensively - started tightening up the defense and started scrapping and scraping," Vickery said.
Vickery credited JAIME RANSOM (20 points, 4 blocks, 4 assists, 3 steals) for her outstanding defensive play in the game.
"We were on the verge of getting blown out, and Ransom stepped up and got 13 points in the first half," he said. "It turned the tide for us. She also kept the clamps on Orange Glen's best player, Jessica Campbell, who scored 31 points in their game against Chaparral (Las Vegas) - held her to 9 points."
Freshman JORDAN FRANEY (12 points) and COURTNEY ASH (5 points, 3 steals and 7 deflections) also helped keep Santana at the top of the East County win column.
"Ash helped turn things around for us too," said Vickery, "especially in the first half. She provided a lot of defensive energy, she was the sparkplug."
"We'll have a Happy New Year now," he added.
Other Santana scoring: Leach 2.
MT. CARMEL 56, WEST HILLS 44 - The Wolf Pack placed two players on the
All-Baron Optimist team, but was unable to capture the consolation
championship Monday (Dec. 30) at Bonita Vista.
"Mt. Carmel started off on a 16-3 run
to open the game, but we were able to
close it to within six points at halftime," said Wolf Pack
coach DAVE
BURGESS.
That's as close as West Hills would get to the Sundevils.
"We got great shots but just couldn't
hit them," lamented Burgess. "We missed
lay-up after lay-up."
All-tournament guard JULIE STRICK connected
on a trio of 3-pointers on her
way to an 11-point finish, and BETH TRONERUD tossed in 10. ERIN
HOURIGAN
added 6 points and also earned an all-tournament team berth.
Five-foot-3 AIME CORDEIRO led the team in
rebounds with 6, tossed in 7 points
and went 2-2 at the line. JORDAN RUSSO followed with 5 rebounds.
Other West Hills scoring: Caitlin Weiss 8, Russo 2.
CANYON SPRINGS 56, EL CAPITAN 51 - A sagging performance in the middle
quarters led to a losing result for El Capitan (9-4) in Monday's
(Dec. 30)
final round of the Santana/Horsman Automotive Christmas Classic.
Even a 21-9 favorable rush in the final
period could not overcome the
Vaqueros sad-sack second and third quarters, which afforded Canyon
Springs
with a 30-13 advantage.
Freshman ALLISON DUFFY overcame foul troubles
to lead El Capitan (9-4) with
20 points, 18 rebounds, 6 steals and 3 blocks.
Other El Capitan scoring: Heather Molzen
10, Alissa Unden 9, Lyric Teigen 6,
Jessica Cable 6.
VISTA 40, HELIX 30 - In a losing effort, the young Highlanders (2-8)
stumbled to the finish line in Monday's (Dec. 30) final round
of the
Santana/Horsman Automotive Christmas Classic.
Freshman DIANA LEASAU paced the Highlanders with 10 points and five steals.
Other Helix scoring: Chasity Toilolo 6,
Desiree Mar-Heine 6, Ashley Penn 4,
Sierra Francisco 2, Natalie Glenn 2.

EastCountySports.com staff report
EL CAJON - An article appearing on the East
County Sports.com web site was
all the motivation the Grossmont Foothillers said they needed
for Saturday's
(Dec. 28) championship game of the Granite Hills Sportland Festival.
Based on
their surprisingly easy 61-44 romp over the host Eagles, that
seemed to hold
true.
"Yeah, in the locker room we passed
the article around to everyone," said
tournament MVP JACLYN GOLDBARG, "The first line said that
the Eagles were
ready to claim the championship. We had other ideas and that kinda
fired us
up."
Grossmont (11-4), winner of 6 straight,
has relied heavily on its ever
improving man-to-man defense during its recent surge. It certainly
passed the
test against Granite Hills, as the Hillers caged the usually sharp-shooting
Eagles, allowing them only 7 field goals through three quarters.
"Tonight's defensive difference was
LAURA FELICE," said Grossmont coach
WALLEY YEAKLE. "She bottled up (JOELLE) BUNNELL extremely
well."
Bunnell, who had scored 27 in the semifinals,
was limited to one field goal
and 9 free throws for her team-high 11 points. She was 1 for 17
from the
field.
"Joelle complained about having a migraine
headache today," Granite Hills
coach JAY ROWLETT said.
As a team, Granite Hills was a paltry 14-for-76
shooting. That's a smidgen
above 18 percent.
"They hit their free throws (19 of 24) and lay-ups. We didn't," Rowlett said.
After taking a 12-11 first-quarter lead,
the Foothillers opened things up in
the second period as Goldbarg pierced the Eagles' full court pressure,
triggering fast-break baskets for her teammates.
With MARISA MOHAN and HEATHER HEMINGWAY
controlling the boards, the
Foothillers closed out the first half with 10 unanswered points,
then ran the
string to 14 straight to mount a 38-21 advantage early in the
third.
Mohan finished the game with 9 rebounds,
9 points, 5 assists and 2 steals,
while Hemingway totaled 8 boards and 10 points. Both were named
to the
all-tournament team.
Grossmont's margin swelled to 24 points midway through the final quarter.
"I asked the girls to give me four
solid quarters tonight," said Yeakle.
"This is the first game of the season we've been able to
do that - I am very
pleased with all of their efforts."
Goldbarg led all scorers with 12, while
snagging 8 rebounds, handing out 8
assists and recording 4 steals.
Grossmont's LYNDSAY FELICE clicked on 4
of 5 floor shots and hit both of her
2 free throw attempts for 10 points. Then Laura Felice added 10
points.
BRENDA NAJOR added 10 points and 6 rebounds
for the Eagles. JEANNIE CASE, who
recorded 4 steals and sank one 3-pointer, was Granite Hills' lone
representative on the all-tournament team. ROCHELLE ARRINGTON
was the only
other Eagle to hit a 3-pointer and she netted 2.
Granite Hills won't have to wait long for
the rematch as both teams face off
again in cross- league action on Jan. 10th.
Other Grossmont scoring: Sam Mohan 8, Janea Mack 2.
Other Granite Hills scoring: Jennifer Whitmoyer
6, Arrington 6, Meagan St.
John 2, Amy Hoyt 2, Jenny Holden 2, Amanda McCurdy 2, Allison
Hack 2.
LA JOLLA COUNTRY DAY 77, SANTANA 53 - Sultans coach WADE VICKERY wasn't
surprised by the outcome of Saturday's (Dec. 28) semifinal of
the
Santana/Horsman Automotive Christmas Classic. But he was a touch
disappointed.
"This may have been an eye opener for
some of our kids," Vickery said. "Maybe
this will help us in the long run, but I'm just not sure if we
play as hard
as some of our predecessors."
Led by Candice Wiggins' 29 points, the Torres
(9-2) took a 22-13
first-quarter lead and stretched the margin to 44-25 by the close
of the
opening half.
"In my opinion, they are definitely
the best team in town," Vickery said.
"And Wiggins dominated the game like she always does. She's
one of the
all-time greats."
AMANDA KRISMER (16 points), JAIME RANSOM
(13 points, 6 rebounds, 5 steals, 4
assists) and JORDAN FRANEY (13 points, 8 rebounds) led Santana
(11-2).
MARGEAUX BASS chipped in with 7 assists.
Other Santana scoring: Margeaux Bass 4, Heather Thomas 4, Gabby Passentino 3.
VALHALLA 30, SENATOR GERSHAW 17 - Even though Saturday's (Dec. 28) Granite
Hills Sportland Festival third place game reflects a 13-point
victory for the
Norsemen, it officially goes down as a forfeit. Final score: Valhalla
2,
Senator Gershaw 0.
None of the individual statistics count
since the visitors from Bow Island,
Alberta, Canada were forced to forfeit with 3:31 left in the first
half.
The Gators' head coach received his second
technical, which calls for an
automatic ejection. Since no assistant coaches traveled with the
team, there
was no adult to officially run the team. Thus the officials halted
play and
Valhalla accepted the forfeit.
Some of those in attendance believed the
coach of Senator Gershaw (11-4)
intentionally drew the second technical so his team could get
an early start
home.
"We were playing well and unfortunately
the other team did not want to
continue," Valhalla coach ROBERT WILSON said. "We were
dominating inside, and
their coach wasn't happy with the physical play. He complained
the whole
game."
The victory was Valhalla's 9th in 13 starts.
"This time last year we were just the
opposite at 4-9," Wilson said. "We've
already won two more games than we did all of last year."
MEGAN ALEXANDER, who finished the abbreviated
contest with 10 points and 6
rebounds, helped the Norsemen march to a 13-2 lead over the Gators.
"Megan took it to their big girl, causing
her to commit four fouls in the
first half," Wilson said.
JASMINE BEAUCHAMP, who was named to the
all-tournament team, added 6 points
and 5 rebounds against the Canadians.
Other Valhalla scoring: Angel Burch 7, Kristina
Fleming 4, Jennifer Kolegraff
3.
MOUNT MIGUEL 64, SOUTHWEST (SD) 44 - GENEVIEVE COSTELLO (17 points, 4
assists), IJAL BARNES (16 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals) , CHRISTINE
FITZGERALD (12 points 7 assists, 8 steals), KAYLA HENRY (8 points,
8
rebounds) and JERICA WILLIAMS (8 points, 4 steals) led a balanced
Mount
Miguel attack in Saturday's (Dec. 28) Santana/Horsman Automotive
Christmas
Classic contest at El Capitan.
"This was the worst officiated game
I've ever seen at Mount Miguel," Matadors
coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL said.
The Matadors (10-2) used a 30-10 fourth-quarter run to break a 34-34 tie.
Other Mount Miguel scoring: Teresa Melendez 2, Natasha Edwards 1.
EL CAPITAN 75, CHAPARRAL (LAS VEGAS)
37 - Freshman ALLISON DUFFY turned
in an
impressive double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds as the Vaqueros
(9-3)
crushed the visitors from the Silver City in a Santana/Horsman
Automotive
Christmas Classic consolation encounter on Saturday (Dec. 28),
JESSICA CABLE (15 points, 10 rebounds, 5
assists, 5 steals), HEATHER MOLZEN
(14 points, 11 rebounds) and LYRIC TEIGEN (12 points, 9 assists)
provided a
powerful supporting cast for Duffy.
El Capitan outscored Chaparral (8-3) in every quarter.
Other El Capitan scoring: Alissa Unden 7,
Mallorie Montgomery 4, Hannah
Gerkin 4, Morgan Craig 2.
WEST HILLS 46, MIRA MESA 39 - Don't overlook the Wolf Pack. This is a team
that seems to cast a different player into the staring role every
night.
It was BETH TRONERUD's turn Saturday (Dec.
28) as she scored a team-high 13
points and collected 6 rebounds to direct West Hills to the Barons-Optimist
Tournament victory and into Monday's consolation championship
at Bonita Vista.
"We've had five different girls lead
us in scoring this year," said coach
DAVE BURGESS, who has guided the Wolf Pack to a 10-3 mark.
JULIE STRICK added 11 points, most of it
coming on 7-for-9 shooting from the
free throw line. She also had 5 steals and 4 assists.
Other West Hills scoring: Caitlin Weiss
10, Erin Hourigan 6, Aime Cordeiro 4,
Tasha Chouinard 2.
HELIX 58, HILLTOP 39 - Freshman DIANA LEASAU scored a career-high 27 points
to carry the Highlanders to their second victory of the season
in Saturday's
(Dec. 28) Santana/Horsman Automotive Christmas Classic consolation
game.
Leasau nailed 10 field goals and 7 of 11
free throws, while recording 6
assists and 5 steals.
"I did a little experimenting,"
Helix coach TERRY HINDS said. "I started all
my seniors and we fell behind 16-7 (after one quarter). "Then
I put in my
freshmen and sophomores and we outscored Hilltop 51-23 over the
last three
quarters."
Other Helix scoring: Chasity Toilolo 8,
Sierra Francisco 7, Ashley Penn 5,
Desiree Marheine 5, Racquel Primas 4, Brandi Wilson 2.
GOLDEN WEST 36, CHRISTIAN 28 - The Patriots led 18-16 at the half in
Saturday's (Dec. 28) Granite Hills Sportland Festival consolation
game. But a
scoreless third quarter did them in.
"We absolutely went cold," Christian coach TIM JOLLETT said.
RACHEL EDELEN tallied 20 points for the
Patriots (5-8), who were playing
without leading scorer MAGGIE McGILL. The McGill sisters sat out
Saturday's
game for religious reasons. Maggie McGill was named to the All-Tournament
team.
Other Christian scoring: Jamie Ray 5, Heather Meier 3.
El Cajon Valley vs. Chatelech - No report.

EastCountySports.com staff report
EL CAJON - It will be an all-East County
finale in Saturday's (Dec. 28)
Granite Hills Sportland Festival championship game when the Grossmont
Foothillers (9-4) and the host Granite Hills Eagles (10-2) meet
at 4:20 p.m.
GROSSMONT 64, WESTVIEW 23 - The Foothillers asserted themselves early in
this one, exploiting a very young and inexperienced Wolverine
ballclub.
"Give them a lot of credit. As a new
high school, their team is made up
entirely of 9th and 10th graders," said Grossmont coach WALLEY
YEAKLE. "They
play with a lot of hustle. They will be very good in a year or
two."
Grossmont's defense again set the tone early,
holding Westview to 10
first-half points while producing 40 points at the offensive end.
Before Yeakle relegated his starters to
the bench, MARISA MOHAN led all
scorers with 16 points, many coming as the result of her offensive
rebounding
prowess.
JACLYN GOLDBARG contributed 14 points on
7 of 8 shooting, and SAMANTHA MOHAN
was 5 for 5 and finished with 10 points.
TARYIN CASILLAS also popped in 10 and collected 6 boards for Grossmont.
Other Grossmont scoring: Lyndsay Felice
6, Heather Hemingway 4, Laura Felice
2, Janae Mack 2.
GROSSMONT 66, VALHALLA 34 - In a highly anticipated cross-league rival
match-up, the Foothillers easily defeated the Norsemen of Valhalla
in the
semifinals of the Granite Hills Sportland Festival on Friday (Dec.
27).
"We came out of the chute ready to
play," said Grossmont coach WALLEY YEAKLE.
"Our defense was outstanding and we also shot the ball very
well. I was
especially pleased with our 3rd quarter effort."
After leading by 14 at the half, Grossmont
outscored Valhalla 20-6 in the
third quarter.
JACLYN GOLDBARG poured in 10 of her game-high 25 points in that
quarter,
including a pair of 3s.
Grossmont freshman SAM MOHAN scored 6 points
in the third period and
continued her remarkable shooting streak of 15 consecutive shots
over the
last three games before finally missing.
LAURA FELICE (11 points) and MARISA MOHAN
(10) also hit double scoring digits
for Grossmont.
Throughout the game, Grossmont controlled the boards at both ends.
HEATHER HEMINGWAY collected 7 caroms, and
LYNDSAY FELICE and MARISA MOHAN
grabbed 6 apiece. Many were out-let passes to the fast-breaking
Goldbarg, who
doled out 10 assists to her hustling teammates.
JASMINE BEAUCHAMP led Valhalla with 13 points,
while MEGAN ALEXANDER notched
8 points and 6 rebounds.
Other Grossmont scoring: Samantha Mohan
8, Taryin Casillas 5, Heather
Hemingway 3, Lyndsay Felice 2, Sharilyn Chapin 2.
Other Valhalla scoring: Sade' Campbell 6,
Jennifer Kolegraff 5, Kristina
Fleming 2.
GRANITE HILLS 55, SENATOR GERSHAW 40
- JOELLE BUNNELL let it be known
that
the Eagles are ready to claim the championship of their own Granite
Hills
Sportland Festival. The 5-foot-7 senior guard scored 27 points,
which
included 7 three-pointers, in Friday night's (Dec. 27) semifinal
conquest
over Canadian power Senator Gershaw (11-2).
Bunnell also grabbed 10 rebounds and notched
7 steals for the Eagles (10-2),
who took a 28-18 halftime lead and never looked back. Bunnell
was 9-for-20
from the floor and 2-for-2 from the foul line.
"Shooting-wise, this was her best game,"
said Granite Hills coach JAY ROWLETT
of Bunnell, who has an East County-high 32 three-pointers.
BRENDA NAJOR scored her 8 points on 4-for-5
shooting from the floor, while
corralling 8 rebounds.
JEANNIE CASE turned in her usually steady
game of 6 points, 6 steals and 4
rebounds for Granite Hills.
Other Granite Hills scoring: Jenny Holden
6, Meagan St. John 4, Jennifer
Whitmoyer 2, Allison Hack 1, Amy Hoyt 1.
GRANITE HILLS 68, CALEXICO 46 - A few role changes showed that these Granite
Hills Eagles do have versatility. JEANNIE CASE scored a team-best
13 points
and grabbed 5 rebounds to pave the way to the Granite Hills Sportland
Festival victory on Friday (Dec. 27).
JOELLE BUNNELL and BRENDA NAJOR tossed in
another 10 points apiece, while
MEAGAN ST. JOHN led the Eagles board brigade by collecting 10
caroms.
The Eagles sent the Bulldogs scurrying back
to their doghouse, using a 23-8
third-quarter scoring run to ice the victory.
Other Granite Hills scoring: Jennifer Whitmoyer
9, Amy Hoyt 8, Jenny Holden
8, Amanda McCurdy 6, St. John 4.
SANTANA 65, CANYON SPRINGS (Moreno Valley)
64 - The Sultans' thrilling
victory over Canyon Springs on Friday (Dec. 27) earned them a
heavy underdog
role in Saturday's (Dec. 28) semifinal showdown against La Jolla
Country Day.
Santana (11-1) shot 60 percent from the
floor (25 for 42) and netted 15 of 21
free throws in the narrow escape over Canyon Springs.
JAIME RANSOM and AMANDA KRISMER drilled
in 16 points apiece. Ransom also
blocked 4 shots, recorded 3 steals, collected 9 passes and delivered
3
assists, while Krismer went 8-for-8 from the free throw line in
the game.
"It was the most amazing game,"
Santana coach WADE VICKERY said. "I've never
felt so helpless, defensively. Their guards, Jennifer Risper,
in particular,
kept penetrating and dumping off the ball. It didn't matter whether
we threw
up a 1-3-1 zone or a 2-3 zone - we tried everything. Nothing really
stopped
them. Fortunately, they couldn't stop us."
Trailing by 6 points with 2:30 to go, Krismer
keyed Santana's comeback by
going 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Yet the Sultans were still
a point
short, with 40 seconds remaining.
Enter MARGEAUX BASS. The Sultans junior
playmaker took an outlet pass from
Krismer and dribbled the length of the floor, charging in for
the
game-winning lay-up with 5 seconds on the clock.
"It was a great effort by Bass, because
she had people flying at her as she
went up to take the shot," Vickery said.
Bass finished with 12 points and 9 assists.
Freshman JORDAN FRANEY contributed 14 points
and 6 rebounds to the Santana
victory.
Now the Sultans must deal with La Country
Day and Candice Wiggins, who turned
a powerful triple-double for 32 points, 15 rebounds and 14 steals
in an easy
81-44 romp over Fairfax of Los Angeles.
Other Santana scoring: Courtney Ash 4, Robin Appleby 3.
WEST HILLS 71, BRANHAM (San Jose) 41
- Hidden in virtual obscurity for
most
of her career, Wolf Pack senior ERIN HOURIGAN scored a career-high
31 points
to lead West Hills in Friday night's (Dec. 27) Barons-Optimist
Tournament
game at Bonita Vista.
"That was pretty special," said
her coach DAVE BURGESS. "She didn't even play
the whole game."
The fact that the Pack powered its way to
a 23-5 first-quarter lead was
harbinger of what was to come.
"We pulled away from them in the first
quarter with our full court press,"
Burgess said. "Then we took it off in the second quarter
and made sure and
got everyone in the game."
JULIE STRICK contributed 14 points and BETH
TRONERUD added 10 as the Wolf
Pack improved to 9-3 on the season.
Other West Hills scoring: Caramie Huntington
5, Dara Preston 5, Aime
Cordeiro 4, Caitlin Weiss.
VALHALLA 54, PACIFIC HILLS 45 (OT) - The Norsemen outscored the visitors
from Los Angeles 10-1 in overtime to claim the Granite Hills Sportland
Festival victory Friday (Dec. 27) at Steele Canyon.
MEGAN ALEXANDER (15 points, 11 rebounds)
sealed the victory by hitting 4-of-6
free throws in overtime. JENNIFER KOLEGRAFF, who provided breathing
room by
hitting a trey to give Valhalla a 49-45 lead in the extra stanze,
finished
with 14 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals.
Other standouts for Valhalla included CHELSEA
KITCHENS, who cashed in 9
points and a dozen rebounds.
"Kitchens is quickly becoming a player
to watch," said Valhalla coach ROBERT
WILSON. "She has had multiple games of double-figure rebounds,
and is
starting to pick it up in the points column."
Other Valhalla scoring: Angel Burch 7, Jasmine
Beauchamp 5, Kristina Fleming
4.
MOUNT MIGUEL 71, HILLTOP 19 - Five Matadors finished in double figures as
Mount Miguel improved to 9-2 in Friday's (Dec. 27) rout of the
Lancers in the
Santana/Horsman Automotive Christmas Classic encounter.
Point guard GENEVIEVE COSTELLO led the way
with 16 points, 7 assists, 3
steals and 3 rebounds. JERICA WILLIAMS muscled in 12 points, garnered
a
team-high 9 rebounds, and recorded 3 steals, while IJAL BARNES
banged in 14
points, grabbed 7 rebounds and recorded 4 steals.
Although she only scored 4 points, CHRISTINE
FITZGERALD came up big in other
areas with 6 assists, 6 steals and 5 rebounds for the Matadors.
Not to be overlooked were KAYLA HENRY (10
points, 4 rebounds) and NATASHA
EDWARDS (10 points, 4 steals).
Other Mount Miguel scoring: Dorian Steel 5.
SOUTHWEST (SD) 55, HELIX 52 - The Highlanders (1-7) folded in the final
quarter, allowing the Raiders to gain a 23-12 scoring advantage
in Friday's
(Dec. 27) Santana/Horsman Automotive Christmas Classic game.
DIANA LEASAU, KEISHA BLAND and RACQUEL PRIMAS
each had 10 points to top the
Highlanders' offensive might.
Leasau raked the boards for 11 rebounds,
as did SIERRA FRANCISCO, while
CHASITY TOILOLO had 8 caroms and 9 points.
Other Helix scoring: Desiree Marheine 8, Brandi Wilson 5, Natalie Glenn 3.
HIGHLAND (Ariz.) 55, EL CAPITAN 47 - JESSICA CABLE cranked in 21 points,
including 11-for-13 free throw shooting, as the Vaqueros (8-3)
fell to
Highland (Ariz.) (17-0) in the Santana/Horsman Automotive Christmas
Classic
contest on Friday (Dec. 27).
El Capitan was again plagued by foul problems,
as Highland converted 24-of-33
free throws. The Vaqueros were 17-of-22 from the line.
"Fouls killed us," said Vaqueros coach DARIN CURTIS.
ALISSA UNDEN canned a pair of 3s and finished with 10 points for El Cap.
Other El Capitan scoring: Heather Molzen
5, Allison Duffy 5, Lyric Teigen 4,
Jenny Holley 2.
CHRISTIAN 50, EL CAJON VALLEY 46 - The Patriots rallied in the final 90
seconds to deny the Braves their first victory of the season in
Friday's
(Dec. 27) Granite Hills Sportland Festival encounter.
MAGGIE McGILL, who totaled 39 points in
Friday's doubleheader, canned a
couple of buckets and a key 3-pointer to propel the Patriots to
the
come-from-behind win.
RACHEL EDELEN, who is still feeling a bit
under the weather, added 14 points
for Christian.
MICHELLE THOMPSON (17 points) and IEISHA
SMITH (16 points) led El Cajon
Valley (0-4). Thompson did most of her scoring from long distance,
hitting a
quintet of 3-pointers. Smith tossed in a pair of treys.
Other Christian scoring vs. El Cajon Valley:
Jamie Ray 7, Heather Meier 6,
Kara McGill 2.
Other El Cajon Valley scoring: Stephaine Scott 8, Roschelle Boyd 5.
CLAIREMONT 48, CHRISTIAN 41 - Once again, it was MAGGIE McGILL carrying the
offensive torch for the Patriots in Friday night's (Dec. 27) Granite
Hills
Festival game. McGill drilled in a trio of three-pointers en route
to a
team-high 18 points.
Other Christian scoring vs. Clairemont:
Edelen 10, Holly Erickson 6, Heather
Meier 4, Kara McGill 2, Jamie Ray 1.
CENTRAL UNION 56, EL CAJON VALLEY 39

in Friday's
(Dec. 27) second game of the Granite Hills Sportland Festival.
Other El Cajon Valley scoring: Roschelle
Boyd 6, Joyce Barton 8, Stephaine
Scott 3, Tala Kosa 2, Abigail Mendez 1.

EL CAJON - JOELLE BUNNELL paced a balanced scoring attack with 15 points, lifting Granite Hills past depleted Christian, 67-29, in Thursday (Dec. 26) first round of the Granite Hills Festival Tournament.
Bunnell keyed a 35-11 second-half run by the Eagles, with 10 of her points coming following the intermission against a Patriots squad which was down to six players because of illness.
Bunnell, a 5-foot-7 senior, is the Eagles' leading scorer on a squad she believes can reach an important milestone.
"We went 18-11 last year, but we're not going to lose 11 games this year," said Bunnell, who also had 9 rebounds and 6 steals. "We're trying to get over 20 wins."
Should Granite Hills (8-2) reach that plateau, when bonus points are added to the power ratings for road and neutral court victories, the Eagles could gain a home court advantage for at least one round of the San Diego CIF playoffs.
"We played down to their level a little bit, yet we've improved in a lot of ways, especially with our press," added Bunnell, who hopes to earn a scholarship at a nearby NCAA Division II or NAIA School.
"I'd like to go away to school, but
nothing too far away - maybe 2 or 3
hours, so I can come home occasionally," added Bunnell. "Otherwise,
I can go
to Cuyamaca or Mesa
(community colleges)."
JEANNIE CASE added 11 points for the Eagles,
who also received 10 rebounds
from BRENDA NAJOR, 9 points and 7 rebounds from MEAGAN ST. JOHN
as well as 8
points and 5 assists from RACHELLE ARRINGTON, who was making her
season debut
after a lengthy injury.
Christian, which saw its record dip to 4-6,
received a game-high 18 points
from MAGGIE McGILL. RACHEL EDELEN, who was battling the flu, managed
to
contribute 8 points in one half of play.
Other Granite Hills scoring: Jennifer Whitmoyer
8, Jenny Holden 6, Amy Hoyt
2, Amanda McCurdy 4, Najor 4.
Other Christian scoring: Holly Erickson 3.
EL CAPITAN 59, POWAY 54 - ALISSA UNDEN enjoyed one of the top offensive
outings of her career with a game-high 20 points to vault the
Vaqueros (8-2)
past visiting Poway in Thursday's (Dec. 26) opening round of the
Santana-Horsman Automotive Christmas Classic.
A 5-foot-6 junior guard, Unden canned a
trio of 3-pointers, 3 of 4 free
throws, dealt 5 assists, made 5 steals and negotiated one rebound.
Six-foot-1 El Capitan freshman ALLISON DUFFY
powered in 16 points in addition
to pulling down 7 rebounds, recording 7 steals, dishing a couple
of assists
and blocking a shot.
HEATHER MOLZEN added 13 points, 8 rebounds
and pair of blocks, while JESSICA
CABLE settled for 6 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds and 2 steals.
A physical team, El Capitan was whistled
for a season low 8 fouls - 2 in the
first half when the Vaqueros claimed a 26-17 advantage.
Other El Capitan scoring: Lyric Teigen 4.
VALHALLA 56, OCEANSIDE 50 (OT) - After blowing leads of leads of 9 points in
the second quarter and 11 points in the third quarter, the Norsemen
(7-3)
gained a 10-4 scoring edge in overtime to secure Thursday's (Dec.
26) opening
round Granite Hills Sportland Festival victory over the Pirates.
In overtime, JASMINE BEAUCHAMP hit a 3-pointer
to propel Valhalla into a
49-46 lead. After a couple fouls and three Oceanside free throws,
it was
tied again.
Eventually clinging to a 51-50 edge, Valhalla
received the winning boost from
sophomore guard ANGEL BURCH, who canned a huge 3-pointer with
52 seconds
left. JENNIFER KOLEGRAFF followed that up with a defensive stop
and two free
throws to clinch the victory.
"The defensive effort when it counts
is what won it for us," noted Valhalla
coach ROBERT WILSON, whose squad did not permit a single Oceanside
field goal
in overtime.
Beauchamp (15 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals)
and MEGAN ALEXANDER (10 points,
14 rebounds) were the pacesetters for Valhalla. Kolegraff added
8 points and
7 rebounds, while KRISTINA FLEMING chipped in with 8 points and
5 rebounds.
Burch finished with 7 points, 5 assists and 4 steals. CHELSEA
KITCHENS
collected 11 rebounds.
Valhalla shot well from the free throw line, netting 18 of 23 chances.
Other Valhalla scoring: Kitchens 4, Lauren Sheppard 4.
SANTANA 74, HILLTOP 15 - JAIME RANSOM ripped off 20 points on 8-for-15
shooting from the floor and 2-for-2 accuracy from the foul line,
as the
Sultans (10-1) smothered Hilltop in a first round romp in Thursday's
(Dec.
26) Santana Horsman Automotive Christmas Classic.
"Everybody on our roster played about
half the game," Santana coach WADE
VICKERY said. "We jumped out big early (26-4 after one quarter)
and then just
rotated people in."
ROBIN APPLEBY and AMIE LEACH added 10 points
apiece, while MARGEAUX BASS
chipped in with 8 points and 8 assists.
The Sultans were 11 for 12 from the free
throw line and shot a sizzling 53
percent (30-for-57) from the field.
Other Santana scoring: Courtney Ash 7, Amanda
Krismer 6, Marian DeBarrows 2,
Carlee Ihm 5, Jordan Franey 6.
CANYON SPRINGS 50, MOUNT MIGUEL 42 - This was a missed opportunity as far as
Mount Miguel coach ROBBY SANDOVAL is concerned.
"We really wanted to win this game
so that we could play Santana (Friday),"
the Matadors coach said. "But we played down to our competition
and it cost
us that chance. (Canyon Springs) beat us at the free throw line
(16-11). That
was a major difference as far as I'm concerned."
CHRISTINE FITZGERALD scored a game-high
20 points for the Matadors (8-2), but
converted only 7 of 12 free throws in Thursday's (Dec. 26) Santana
Horsman
Automotive Christmas Classic opener.
IJAL BARNES tacked on 9 points and 5 rebounds
for Mount Miguel, which also
received 8 rebounds and 6 points from JERICA WILLIAMS.
Other Mount Miguel scoring: Genevieve Costello 2, Kayla Henry 5.
GROSSMONT 70, CHATELECH (Canada) 9 - There are a handful of teams in San
Diego County that would love to win by this kind of lopsided score.
Fortunately for these Canadians, Grossmont coach WALLEY YEAKLE
is not one of
those who relish this type of rout.
Oh, how this could have been an ugly one
for the San Diego CIF record
archives. Credit Yeakle, his staff and players for avoiding an
even bigger
blow out.
After taking a first quarter lead of 26-2
and watching that advantage swell
to 48-4 by intermission, Yeakle, ordered his troops to halt the
fast break
and make at least 6 passes before taking any shots.
MARISA MOHAN netted 9 of 22 shots for a
team high 18 points to go along with
11 rebounds for Grossmont (7-4). SAMANTHA MOHAN followed her sister's
lead
with 16 points on 8-for-8 shooting, while logging 8 steals and
4 assists.
JACLYN GOLDBARG zeroed in on 8 of 11 shots
from the field for 16 points, and
handed out 8 assists while pilfering 9 passes.
Other Grossmont scoring: Heather Hemingway
8 points, Lyndsay Felice 6, Laura
Felice 4, Sharilyn Chapin 2.
Barons-Optimist Tournament
SCRIPPS RANCH 55, WEST HILLS 51 -
ERIN HOURIGAN hammered down 20 and grabbed
5 rebounds for the Wolf Pack (8-3), which dropped Thursday's (Dec.
26)
opening round encounter in the Baron Optimist Tournament at Bonita
Vista High.
JULIE STRICK added 13 points, 4 assists
and a pair of steals for the Wolf
Pack.
Other West Hills scoring: Jordan Russo 8,
Beth Tronerud 4, Tasha Chouinard 2,
Aime Cordeiro 2, Caitlin Weiss 2.
CALEXICO 71, EL CAJON VALLEY 32 - Playing only their second game of the
season the Braves of El Cajon Valley were rocked by the Bulldogs
of Calexico
in Thursday's (Dec. 26) opening round of the Granite Hills Sportland
Festival.
Sophomore MICHELLE THOMPSON led the Braves
(0-2) with 11 points, including a
3-pointer.
Other El Cajon Valley scoring: Roschelle
Boyd 8, Joyce Barton 7, Ieisha
Smith 4, Stephanie Scott 2.
LA JOLLA COUNTRY DAY 86, HELIX 18 - Not many teams in San Diego County figure
to challenge Candice Wiggins and the Torres of La Jolla Country
Day. The
Highlanders of Helix know now what it feels like to be a victim
as they were
pummeled by LJCD in Thursday's first round of the Santana Horsman
Automotive
Christmas Classic.
After one period, the Highlanders were gasping
for air and trailing 25-4. It
was 49-7 at the half and 63-14 after three.
The Highlanders (1-6) should not feel a
blanket of shame as these Torres are
accustom to lopsided victories.
Nobody scored more than 5 points for Helix,
but CHASITY TOILOLO and SIERRA
FRANCISCO each pulled down 5 rebounds.
Other Helix scoring: Racquel Primas 5, Diana
Leasau 4, Francisco 3, Natalie
Glenn 2, Ashley Penn 2, Toilolo 2.

EL CAJON - An international matchup featuring
the Grossmont Foothillers and a
globetrotting Persbraten team from Oslo, Norway hit the hardwood
for a
special non-league contest Monday morning (Dec. 23) at Grossmont
High's gym.
The game began with a traditional gift exchange
and the playing of both
countries national anthems. It ended with a 65-39 Grossmont victory
and a
delicious post-game brunch.
Persbraten opened the game with two unanswered
3's, before some choice
barking from the bench, and a few JACLYN GOLDBARG-to-MARISA MOHAN
lay-ups
settled the Hillers into the driver's seat.
Once again it was the Hillers' defense that
opened the game up and took
complete control of the tour bus.
"Our defensive intensity was great
in the second half," said Grossmont coach
WALLEY YEAKLE, as the Hillers (7-4) held Norway to 14 points.
An interesting side bar to the game had
Coach Yeakle matching wits with his
former El Cajon Valley High-Grossmont College player, DIMITRI
HODGKINSON.
"It was great being able to play an
international team, and very special
whenever one of your old players is the opposing coach" said
Yeakle. "I was
very impressed at how hard Dimitri's team played for him. It was
especially
gratifying seeing them run some of our plays."
MARISA MOHAN again led all scorers with
20 points on 10 of 15 shooting. She
was followed by Goldbarg's 13 points, 9 assists and 6 steals.
LYNDSAY FELICE
was a perfect 4 of 4 from the floor and finished with 9 points
as did Heather
Hemingway. ANNIE GONZALEZ had 6, while LAURA FELICE's 4 and SAM
MOHAN's 2
rounded out the Grossmont scoring.
Persbraten continues their tour on Thursday
(Dec. 26) at the Barons Optimist
Tournament at Bonita Vista, while Grossmont moves on to the Sportland
Granite
Hills tourney.

Santana's Jaime Ransom (22) defends against
Kearny Saturday night (12-21-02)
EastCountySports.com staff report
EL CAJON - In a tournament championship contest worthy of a CIF title game, Daphanie Kennedy scored a game-high 34 points and made key defensive stops down the stretch, as Kearny handed Santana its first setback of the season in Saturday's (Dec. 21) thrilling 75-74 finale of the Granite Hills Invitational.
Kennedy, who was tabbed the event MVP, registered two significant steals in the final minute - one leading to the go-ahead basket by guard Amber Pullin, while the other prevented the Sultans from taking one last shot to salvage a victory.
"I didn't have to take the shot because I have faith in my teammates," said Kennedy, who forwarded a long pass to Pullin for a lay-in with 49 seconds remaining. "Because we have faith in each other, it doesn't matter who scores as long as we all play together, so I made the pass."
After the team exchanged missed shots, Santana held the final possession with six seconds to go. But a pass into the corner to take one final shot was intercepted by Kennedy just before the buzzer sounded.
Kearny moved to 8-1 with the triumph, snapping the nine-game, season-opening win streak of Santana (9-1).
Despite the loss, Santana coach WADE VICKERY wasn't distraught by the heart-breaking setback.
"It's disappointing to lose," Vickery admitted. "But it's encouraging to play so well against a great team. I feel a whole lot better about our team than I did a week ago. We've played really well in the last three games."
Kennedy's outing offset a breakout performance
by Santana freshman center
JORDAN FRANEY, who registered a career-high 31 points and grabbed
11 rebounds. Of her scoring, 10 points were in the final period,
including eight of the Sultans' final 10 points to reclaim a 74-71
lead with 1:14 remaining.
Franey dominated in the paint to propel Santana back from a 32-23 deficit. Her rebound-basket early in the third quarter tied the game at 47-all, then the lead changed four times before the Komets went on an 8-0 run for a 65-62 lead with four minutes left.
"Franey played under control, but very aggressive," Vickery said.
However, Kearny, which was missing its center, had no answer for Franey, who downed five consecutive shots in the final period. Her left-handed mini-hookshot while driving across the lane gave Santana a 62-57 lead before the Komets went on their 8-point run. But the Sultans kept feeding Franey the ball.
Following a 3-point basket by AMANDA KRISMER
(16 points, 6 assists), JAIME
RANSOM (19 points, 5 assists) passed the ball to Franey for a
lay-in. Then
MARGEAUX BASS (11 assists) fed the ball underneath from the other
side of the
lane to cap the streak, giving Santana a 71-69 lead with 1:54
left.
Krismer added a foul shot following her
steal, but Pullin answered by beating
the defense for a lay-in to cut the Santana lead to 72-71 with
1:32 left.
Franey concluded the Sultans' scoring by
banking in a lay-in after grabbing
an offensive rebound, but Kearny, which saw its full-court press
consistently
beat in the first half, was able to force a pair of turnovers
in the final 49
seconds thanks to Kennedy.
"I don't try to think about defense,
I just try to react and trace the ball,"
said Kennedy, who downed 14-of-27 shots, including a pair of 3-pointers.
"This was one of the hardest teams I've ever had to play,
but I was always
confident in my teammates."
Other Santana scoring: Courtney Ash 2, Bass 6.
GROSSMONT 71, CLAIREMONT 35 - After suffering a painful loss the night
before, the Foothillers found redemption 10 hours later in an
early morning
match-up against Clairemont in the final round of the Granite
Hills
Invitational Tournament.
"We lost some games this tourney, that
we know we should have won," said
Grossmont senior co-captain HEATHER HEMINGWAY, "Coach asked
us to make a
fresh start this morning, and the team responded really well."
The Hillers jumped out quickly behind MARISA
MOHAN's seven first-quarter
points and some strong team defense.
"Our man defense is predicated on quick-help
rotations, which we have been
struggling with of late. This morning everyone did a much better
job and it
was reflected in the outcome of the game," said Hillers coach
WALLEY YEAKLE.
Leading 18-13 to start the second quarter,
the Grossmont defense clamped down
on the Chieftains, holding them to 9 points and ending the first
half 37-22.
Mohan scored an additional 6 points in the quarter and Hemingway
8, many
being the end result of JACLYN GOLDBARG's eight first-half assists.
The second half saw no letdown in the Hiller's
defense as ANNIE GONZALEZ and
SHARILYN CHAPIN continued to pressure the ball well. Gonzalez
finished the
game with 6 points, and Chapin had 3 boards and a steal.
LAURA FELICE kept Clairemont's defense honest
as she buried 4 of 6 treys,
including one from 5 feet behind the arc, and finishing with 17
points.
"We shuffled our lineup by starting
SAM MOHAN the last two games in the hope
of bringing more defensive energy to the floor," said Yeakle.
"She has
responded well and given us a definite lift that, hopefully, we'll
be able to
sustain."
Goldbarg finished the contest with 8 points
and 12 assists. Marisa Mohan had
8 rebounds to go with her game-high 18 points. Hemingway added
13 points,
and 7 boards. Rounding out the scoring, LYNDSAY FELICE and Sam
Mohan chipped
in 2 points apiece while TARYIN CASILLAS added 5.
Grossmont's next game is Monday (Dec. 23)
at 9 a.m. against visiting
Persbraten, Norway. The team is coached by Dimitri Hodgkinson,
who played for
Yeakle at El Cajon Valley High; he also played at Grossmont College.
Other Grossmont scoring: None.
WEST HILLS 66, GRANITE HILLS 55 - Some might call this an upset. Given that
coach DAVE BURGESS' Wolf Pack has won 8 of 10 to start the season,
the
somewhat surprising win over tournament host Granite Hills on
Saturday (Dec.
21) should not raise too many eyebrows.
"I was expecting it to be a close game
all the way," said Burgess after his
squad captured the tournament's consolation championship. "We
played both
Friday and Saturday without Jordan Russo, who was unable to get
off from her
job. We played only six girls in the last two games."
The lack of depth nearly cost the Pack.
"(The Eagles) flustered us a little
bit with their full-court press," Burgess
said. "It gave us some problems. But we hit some big shots
when we needed to."
West Hills hit 5 of its 6 three-pointers
in the first half to take a 41-28
halftime lead.
JULIE STRICK led West Hills with 20 points,
including three treys, 8 rebounds
and 5 assists. AIME CORDEIRO canned a trio of three-pointers and
finished
with 13 points, while ERIN HOURIGAN tallied 15 points and grabbed
a team-high
10 rebounds.
"Erin had a fantastic tournament in
terms of defense, rebounding and being a
steadying influence on the floor," said Burgess. "In
three of her four
tourney games, she had double-doubles."
Junior CAITLIN WEISS had 9 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for West Hills.
JOELLE BUNNELL scored a game-high 23 points
and corralled 8 rebounds for
Granite Hills. BRENDA NAJOR added 10 points and 9 rebounds for
the Eagles.
"They just outplayed us," said
Granite Hills coach JAY ROWLETT, whose Eagles
saw their record dip 7-2. "With the style we play (man-to-man),
it's hard for
us to go full court the whole game. Playing 4 games in 5 days,
we looked
tired.
"We got in foul trouble in the second
quarter tonight. We're not playing good
sound, 'D', we're picking up too many fouls. We can't wait till
February to
redeem ourselves (in cross-league play)."
Other West Hills scoring: Tasha Chouinard 6, Beth Tronerud 3.
Other Granite Hills scoring: Amanda McCurdy
8, Jennifer Whitmoyer 7, Jeannie
Case 6, Amy Hoyt 1.
MOUNT MIGUEL 55, RANCHO BERNARDO 53 - IJAL BARNES scored 17 points and
hauled down 14 rebounds as the Matadors edged the Broncos in Saturday's
(Dec.
21) Granite Hills Invitational game.
With 20 seconds left, Mount Miguel was down
by one point, and called time
out. KAYLA HENRY got the ball on the inbound and made a basket
inside for the
game-winner. Several see-saw rebounds and fouls produced no further
scoring
as time expired.
Henry finished with 16 points and 9 rebounds for the Matadors (8-1).
"They were in a 1-3-1 match-up zone,
and we did a much better job of
attacking it," noted Matadors coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL.
Rancho Bernardo high-scoring point guard,
Rachel Dulin - who scored 35 points
on Friday day (Dec. 21) in a win over Eastlake, including a school
record 10
three-point shots - was held scoreless by the Matadors' TERESA
MELENDEZ.
"Melendez shut her out - Dulin had
zero points," said Sandoval. "We're pretty
proud of that."
Other Mount Miguel scoring: Genevieve Costello
7, Teresa Melendez 2, Jerica
Williams 2.
EL CAPITAN 51, POWAY 33 - The Vaqueros pulled off one of the most shocking
defensive performances in recent memory among top programs in
the section,
completely blanking Poway in the first quarter en route to an
easy romp in
Saturday's (Dec. 20) third-place contest of the Granite Hills
Invitational.
El Capitan mounted an 18-0 advantage through
the first period, then saw the
lead balloon to 20-0 before the Titans made the first of a one-and-one
situation from the foul line with 6:07 remaining in the first
half.
The Vaqueros then boosted the margin to
22-1 before Poway made its first
basket of the contest some 4:27 prior to the intermission after
missing its
first 19 shots from the floor.
"It was great. It was great. It was
exciting to come out that strong,"
exclaimed El Cap forward JESSICA CABLE, who scored a game-best
13 points. "We
came out ready after we had a little talk before the game."
Memories of a difficult semifinal loss to
Kearny one night earlier served as
the hub of the Vaqueros' motivation.
"You can judge us in warm-ups if we're
going to play well," added Cable. "If
we have just one person out of rotation, you can go by us. But
with our big
girls and our quick guards, we played some terrific defense. We
were ready to
go."
Following a lay-in by Alissa Unden to open
the scoring, Cable tallied 9
consecutive El Cap points for an 11-0 lead less than three minutes
into the
contest. The senior took a Duffy pass to nail an open 3-point
shot, then
Cable sandwiched a soft jumper between a pair of inbounds passes
from LYRIC
TEIGEN for lay-ins.
Duffy followed with a bucket off an offensive
rebound, one of her 11 boards
for the ballgame, then HEATHER MOLZEN took another nice Teigen
pass (5
assists) for another lay-in and a 15-0 lead.
When Unden ended the opening period by sinking
a 3-point basket - part of her
12-point effort - El Cap had converted 8-of-11 shots (73 percent)
while Poway
finished the period missing all 14 attempts from the floor.
"Poway doesn't have Kearny's quickness,
so we felt more comfortable against
them," said Vaqueros coach DARIN CURTIS.
The victory moved El Capitan's record to
7-2, while Poway leveled its season
ledger to 4-4.
Other El Capitan scoring: Allison Duffy
8, Heather Molzen 6, Lyric Teigen 6,
Mallorie Montgomery 4, Jenny Holley 2.
VALHALLA 44, STRATHCONA 29 - JASMINE BEAUCHAMP scored a season-high 17
points and nabbed 4 steals, while MEGAN ALEXANDER tallied 11 points
and
collected 7 rebounds as the Norsemen (6-3) defeated Strathcona
of Edmonton,
Alberta (Canada) in Saturday's (Dec. 21) Kiwanis Tournament consolation
contest.
"It was nice to finish off this tournament
with a win," said Valhalla coach
ROBERT WILSON.
Wilson was pleased with Beauchamp's complete game performance.
"She is scoring both inside and out
and has turned up her intensity on
defense," he said.
JENNIFER KOLEGRAFF has generated more productive
numbers during her career,
but Wilson was more than satisfied with her 5 assists and 2 points
in
Valhalla's latest conquest.
"Jennifer has really become the floor
leader for us," Wilson said. "She is
controlling the game and inspiring her teammates to play at the
next level."
Other scoring: Angel Burch 5, Chelsea Kitchens
4, Sade' Campbell 4, Jennifer
Kolegraff 2, Adriana Malone 1.
Rita Piraino (52) and Daniella Haynes (30) of Steele
Canyon battle for a rebound with a Persbraten (Oslo, Norway) player
Saturday night (12-22-02).
CRAWFORD 35, STEELE CANYON 28;
PERSBRATEN (Oslo, Norway) 55, STEELE CANYON 41 - Completing a difficult
stretch of three games in less than 24 hours, Steele Canyon continued
to
demonstrate improvement on defense. However, the seniorless Cougars
ran their
season-long losing streak to six games after falling to Crawford
in San Diego
Kiwanis Tournament play Saturday morning (Dec. 21), then dropping
a
non-league affair at home to Persbraten, a traveling ball club
from Oslo,
Norway.
Steele Canyon trailed Crawford, 33-15, through
three periods, then made a
strong fourth-quarter run at the Colts, outscoring them 13-2,
as CASSIE
GLOVER scored seven of her team-high 10 points in the final period.
Included
was a 5-for-6 effort at the foul line, but the rest of the Cougars
converted
just 2-of-10 from the charity stripe to thwart the late rally.
On a more positive note, the Cougars established
another first against
Crawford when Glover registered the first 3-pointer in Steele
Canyon's brief
varsity history.
Meanwhile, Persbraten (1-1) won for the
first time on its nine-game voyage
through San Diego County, turning six steals into lay-ins in the
first
quarter to mount a quick 16-6 advantage.
Cougars forward RITA PIRAINO, the team's leading scorer, increased her school record for points in a contest by collecting 22 against the Norwegians, who received a game-high 23 from Cecilea Golden.
Other Steele Canyon scoring vs. Crawford:
Teresa Crawfis 7,Tiffanie Cross 6,
Rita Piraino 3, Erica Fletcher 2.
Other Steele Canyon scoring vs. Persbraten: Cross 7, Glover 6, Fletcher 6.
MONTE VISTA 45, HORIZON 25 - SHALIA BOHANNON scored 18 points, including a trey, and TASHANA HOWELL produced 12 points and 12 rebounds as the Monarchs improved to 4-10 in Saturday's (Dec. 21) Coronado Round Robin Tournament game.
The Monarchs took a 13-7 first-quarter lead and extended their advantage to 27-14 by halftime.
RACHEL VORMAN led the supporting cast with 6 points and 6 rebounds.

for Christian, but the Patriots came up short in Saturday's (Dec.
21)
championship game of the Lady Mustang Tournament at San Dieguito
Academy in Encinitas.
In an earlier game between these two teams
on Saturday, HEATHER MEIER scored
9 points for the Patriots, but the Mustangs turned the game into
a 50-27 rout
by out-scoring Christian 20-5 in the third quarter.
RACHEL EDELEN collected 8 blocks and 8 points for Christian in the first loss.
Other Christian scoring - Game 1: Jamie
Ray 4, Holly Erickson 4, Grace
Garcia 2.
Other Christian scoring in the championship: Kara McGill 3, Edelen
9, Ray 8,
Meier 4, Erickson 2.

EastCountySports.com staff report
SAN DIEGO - One might think that limiting
sharp-shooting senior JOELLE
BUNNELL to 7 points would be the ticket to beating the Granite
Hills Eagles.
Not so, as the Southwest Raiders discovered in Friday's (Dec.
20) Granite
Hills Invitational game at Clairemont. While Bunnell was far below
her 18.6
scoring average, JEANNIE CASE saved the day as the Eagles claimed
a 53-52
victory.
Known more for her defensive prowess, Case
tied the game at 52-all on a
lay-up with 20 seconds remaining. She didn't stop there, stealing
the
Raiders' final bid for a win at the 10-second mark and eventually
drawing a
foul. The 5-foot-6 junior hit the front end of a one-and-one bonus
free throw
opportunity with 0:02 left to give the Eagles the winning edge.
"Case is a great defender, our stopper,"
Granite Hills coach JAY ROWLETT said
after the Eagles improved to 7-1. "She knows her role is
defense, but we're
glad she helped us on the offensive side today."
Case's clutch shooting capped a major rally
as the Eagles flew back from an
11-point fourth quarter deficit.
Granite Hills senior JENNY HOLDEN, who had
scored only 14 points in five
previous games, produced 12 points against Southwest. Her totals
included a
3-pointer. AMY HOYT, who carried a 2.9 scoring average into the
game, also
rang up 12 points in the victory.
JENNIFER WHITMOYER canned a pair of treys
on her way to a 10-point finish for
the Eagles.
Granite Hills' BRENDA NAJOR grabbed team
high 14 rebounds, while Case
collected 8 caroms and 7 steals. Despite being off the mark, Bunnell
was able
to add her 21st
3-point bucket.
Other Granite Hills scoring: Allison Hack 3, Najor 3.
SANTANA 61, POWAY 38 - Santana coach WADE VICKERY called the Sultans'
thrashing of the Titans in Friday night's (Dec. 20) semifinals
of the Granite
Hills Invitational "our best game of the year by far."
Vickery also credited junior guard MARGEAUX
BASS "with her best overall
game." Bass, however, did not necessary agree with her coach's
assessment of
her performance.
"I haven't been sharp for a week,"
said Bass, who pointed to her recent rash
of turnovers. "I am seeing the court, but the passes are
not getting there."
Based on her play against Poway, it appeared
that Bass was being overly
critical of her play. Coming off a serious knee injury, Bass generated
11
points, 7 assists and recorded 5 steals against Poway.
"In this game, I felt it clicking better
and I came out a lot stronger," Bass
said.
The Sultans (9-0), who face Kearny (7-1)
in Saturday's (Dec. 21) tournament
finals at Granite Hills at 7:40 p.m., took care of Poway (4-3)
in
surprisingly easy fashion.
Bass collected a pair of assists in the
game's opening minute, finding JAIME
RANSOM and COURTNEY ASH open for baskets on baseline jump shots.
Bass then
collected consecutive steals for breakaways, getting fouled both
times on the
shot, but she hit all four foul shots for a quick 8-1 Sultans
spurt.
Santana's lead swelled to 13-3 four minutes into the game.
For the half, Santana shot a sizzling 57
percent from the floor (12-for-21),
while holding Poway to just 24-percent shooting (6-of-25) during
the same
period.
Ransom led the Sultans with 20 points, including
her 9th and 10th treys and 7
rebounds. AMANDA KRISMER cashed in 15 and 6 rebounds, while freshman
JORDAN
FRANEY cleared 9 rebounds. COURTNEY ASH also hit a pair of 3-pointers,
giving
her nine for the season.
Other Santana scoring: Ash 8, Gabby Passentino 3, Robin Appleby 2, Franey 2.
MOUNT MIGUEL 58, SAN DIEGO 39 - Sure, San Diego's lineup did not include
county scoring leader Charde Houston when the Matadors crushed
the Cavers in
Friday's (Dec. 20) Granite Hills Invitational at Rancho Bernardo.
But that
did not diminish the value of the victory to Mount Miguel coach
ROBBIE
SANDOVAL.
The Matadors (7-1) opened up a 15-3 lead
in the early going, but it was Mount
Miguel's defense that impressed Sandoval most. San Diego turned
the ball over
22 times, while the Matadors gave it up a mere 9 times.
"IJAL (BARNES) did a great job defending
(Alisha) BELL," Sandoval said. "Ijal
had a hand in her face all night. Bell only had 6 points when
Barnes was in
there. She got a couple of easy buckets against our reserves and
hit a 3 at
the buzzer to finish with 13."
Barnes also paced a balanced Mount Miguel
attack with 12 points and 7
rebounds. KAYLA HENRY chipped in with 11 points and 10 rebounds,
while
CHRISTINE FITZGERALD rolled in 10 points, snapped off 8 scoring
passes and
made 7 steals.
"Our girls played tough," Sandoval
said. "We took seven charges (3 by Henry).
And I thought TERESA MELENDEZ also played well on defense."
Other Mount Miguel scoring: Dorian Steel
7, Genevieve Costello 6, Jerica
Williams 6, Melendez 4, Antonique Seales 2.
KEARNY 63, EL CAPITAN 47 - El Capitan hoped to meet Santana to make it an all-Grossmont North League finale in the Granite Hills Invitational. However, Kearny's Daphanie Kennedy had other ideas.
Kennedy, a junior guard, scored all of her 25 points in the first half, and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Komets rattled the Vaqueros, 63-47, in Friday's (Dec. 20) second semifinal contest.
"We remembered our second-round loss to Santana in the playoffs last year," recalled Kennedy. "And I remember us beating ourselves - I don't think they beat us."
Kennedy avoided the taller Vaqueros with her speed,
nailing 12-of-20 shots in the first half, while also keying the
Kearny defense with six steals. She entered the contest averaging
28.9 points.
"They were trying to slow us down and we kept pushing the ball," said Kennedy. "And Santana will try to do the same thing - they'll try to change us; we'll try to change them."
Per coaching instruction, Kennedy rarely shot the ball in the second half, instead passing to teammates and successfully controlling the ball to prevent any El Capitan rally.
"We played scared," El Capitan coach DARIN CURTIS said. "I call it a youthful, learning experience. (Kearny) wants you to play faster than you want to play. I thought we would be more poised, but we did not play as big as we are. We were too timid on offense.
"They (the Komets) don't care about shooting their percentage, they just want to put up as many shots as they can."
JESSICA CABLE, who is nursing a sore knee, paced the Vaqueros with 14 points, but was limited to just 5-for-12 shooting by a harassing Komets defense. Cable did, however, corral 10 rebounds and deal 4 assists. HEATHER MOLZEN (left) led the team in boards with 12, to go along with 7 points and 3 assists.
Other El Capitan standouts were: ALLISON DUFFY (12 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks), ALISSA UNDEN (11 points, 3 rebounds) and JENNY HOLLEY (10 rebounds).
Other El Capitan scoring: Iyshia Hernandez 2, Holley 1.
WEST HILLS 47, UNIVERSITY CITY 34 - The loss of 3-point shooting ace AMANDA
BROWN left a void in coach DAVE BURGESS' offensive strategy this
season.
Junior AIME CORDEIRO is attempting to pick up the slack.
Cordeiro canned four 3-pointers en route
to a career high 21 points as the
Wolf Pack (7-2) used a 26-15 second half scoring edge to short-circuit
the
Centurions in a Granite Hills Invitaional game at Vista High.
"Losing Amanda really hurt our perimeter
shooting," said Burgess, noting that
Cordeiro hit a trio of 3-pointers, propelling West Hills to a
16-6
third-quarter scoring edge.
ERIN HOURIGAN turned in a nifty double-double
with 14 points and 11 rebounds,
while JULLIE STRICK directed the offense, played hard-nosed defense
while
scoring 6 points, dishing off 6 assists and grabbing 5 rebounds.
BETH TRONERUD tossed in 6 points and CAITLIN
WEISS nabbed 6 rebounds for the
Wolf Pack.
Other West Hills scoring: None.
VISTA 65, GROSSMONT 59 - After a 5-0 start, the Foothillers have hit a
4-game slide, including Friday's (Dec. 20) loss to host Vista
in the Granite
Hills Invitational.
JACLYN GOLDBARG turned in another strong
performance in a losing cause,
hitting 7 of 13 shots from the floor and 6 of 10 free throws for
23 points.
HEATHER HEMINGWAY added 15 points on 6 for
12 shooting, snared 7 rebounds and
handed out a pair of assists. MARISA MOHAN nailed 5 of 9 shots
from the floor
and one of 2 free throws, while clearing 7 rebounds.
Other Grossmont scoring: Lyndsay Felice 6, Taryin Casillas 4.
CHRISTIAN 76, PREUSS 21 - RACHEL EDELEN scored a career-high 30 points and
MAGGIE McGILL added 22 as the Patriots pulverized Preuss Academy
in Friday's
(Dec. 20) Lady Mustang Tournament at San Dieguito Academy.
"We didn't learn anything from a game
like that," Christian coach TIM JOLLETT
said. "It's not even fun to coach. It's hard to keep a focus
when a game is
so lopsided."
JAMIE RAY hit a pair of 3-pointers on her
way to a 10-point total for
Christian (4-3), which is slated to play host San Dieguito Academy
twice on
Saturday (Dec. 21).
Other Christian scoring: Heather Meier 5, Kara McGill 5, Grace Garcia 4.
MONTE VISTA 45, MAR VISTA 26 - Senior RACHEL VORMAN led the Monarchs to the
Coronado Round Robin victory with 12 points, 9 rebounds and 5
blocks on
Friday (Dec. 20) at Coronado.
PHYLICIA REDDICK added 9 points and TASHANA
HOWELL grabbed 10 rebounds and
blocked 4 shots for Monte Vista (3-10), which also received SARA
PECKENPAUGH's contribution of 7 points and 5 rebounds,
Other Monte Vista scoring: Howell 5, Krystle
Begley 5, Shalia Bohannon 5,
Ashley Miller 2.
BISHOP'S 50, VALHALLA 24 - Due to a scheduling snafu, The Bishop's School,
recognized among the top 10 teams in the county, was relegated
to the
consolation bracket of the San Diego Kiwanis Tournament. That
wasn't good
news for the Norsemen (5-3), who fell behind 10-2 in the first
quarter of
Friday's (Dec. 20) Kiwanis Tournament game at Hoover and never
bounced back.
JASMINE BEAUCHAMP led Valhalla with 9 points and 8 rebounds.
Other Valhalla scoring: Chelsea Kitchens
6, Sade' Campbell 3, Lauren
Sheppard 2, Kristina Fleming 2, Jennifer Kolegraff 2.
(12-20-02)

Valhalla's Sade Campbell (32) goes up for
a rebound as teammate Jennifer Kolegraff (24) looks up during
the Lady Norsemen's loss to The Bishop's School Friday night (12-20-02).
Valhalla's
Kristen Fleming (with ball) is trapped by Escondido's Lauren
Hall (32) player, as teammates Jasmine Beauchamp (44), Lauren
Sheppard (22) and Megan Alexander (55) help.
EastCountySports.com staff report
SAN DIEGO - Don't expect the Grossmont South League to be a two horse race this winter. While most experts agree that defending-champion Mount Miguel and senior-laden Granite Hills are the early favorites, don't count out ROBERT WILSON's Valhalla Norsemen. They may have a few surprises in store for those who don't view them as serious contenders.
Seniors JASMINE BEAUCHAMP and MEGAN ALEXANDER have alternated as the team's leading scorer through seven contests this season, both scoring in double figures Thursday (Dec. 19), as the Norsemen thumped Escondido, 67-45, in a San Diego Kiwanis Tournament game at Mira Mesa.
"(Mount Miguel is) real good, but we'll stay with (them)," said Beauchamp. "And it will be important for me to improve and step up a bit for us to beat them."
The 5-foot-11 Beauchamp recorded a game-high 14 points and collected 8 rebounds, while Alexander netted 11 points and retrieved 8 boards.
"We'll take whatever you have to throw at us, because we're fit enough to stay with you," said Alexander, a center. "And seven of our eight seniors have played together for all four years (of high school), so we have a close knit group, too."
The Norsemen (5-2) gradually pulled away
from the Cougars, opening up a 34-16
lead by halftime.
Sophomore guard starter ANGEL BURCH hit
three treys in the second half to
extend Valhalla's lead to 29 points. Burch finished with 13 points,
while
JENNIFER KOLEGRAFF knocked down 11 points, pilfered 6 passes and
dished off 4
assists.
"Alexander, Kolegraff, and Beauchamp
did what they have done all year,"
Wilson said. "But it was nice to have everyone contributing."
SADE' CAMPBELL cashed in 5 points and grabbed
7 rebounds as Valhalla enjoyed
its highest scoring output of the season. All of Campbell's scoring
came in
the final period as Valhalla opened the quarter with an 11-0 scoring
run to
open a 58-29 advantage.
Other Valhalla scoring: Lauren Sheppard
6, Adriana Malone 5, Chelsea Kitchens
2.
WEST HILLS 60, CLAIREMONT 46 - Senior ERIN HOURIGAN turned in an impressive
double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds as the Wolf Pack (6-2)
clipped the
Chieftains in a non-league game on Thursday (Dec. 19).
"We got off to a slow start and didn't
really kick it into gear until the
fourth quarter," West Hills coach DAVE BURGESS said.
The Pack pulled out to a 16-14 lead in the
opening quarter, and was hanging
on to that two-point margin after three quarters. West Hills finally
took
hold and buried the Chiefs 16-4 over the final 8 minutes.
JULIE STRICK paced the Pack with 19 points,
including a trio of treys. She
also handed out 4 scoring passes and cleared 6 rebounds. BETH
TRONERUD
chipped in with 11 points, and TASHA CHOUINARD collected 4 rebounds
and 3
steals off the bench.
Other West Hills scoring: Jordan Russo 8, Caitlin Weiss 4, Aime Cordeiro 2.
CHRISTIAN 56, TRI-CITY CHRISTIAN 38 - There's really no secret to coach TIM
JOLLETT''s formula for success. It's all about defense and rebounding.
"Our girls played really good defense,
and did a good job on the boards," he
said. "That's how we've been winning."
Christian (3-3) limited Tri-City Christian
to 7 points in the 2nd and 4th
quarters to secure the victory in Thursday's (Dec. 19) opening
round of the
Lady Mustang Invitational. More importantly, they limited the
Eagles scoring
ace, Kathy Bishop, to 12 points.
"She's been getting 25-to-30 points
per game," Jollett noted. "Holding her to
half her average was the difference in the game."
RACHEL EDELEN cast in 17 points and HOLLY
ERICKSON and MAGGIE McGILL chalked
up 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Patriots. HEATHER MEIER
added 8
points in the balanced attack.
"Our freshmen (Erickson and Meier) have been doing great," Jollett said.
Other Christian scoring: Jamie Ray 4, Rachelle
Ferriera 2, Kara McGill 2,
Grace Garcia 1.
Steele Canyon's Erica Fletcher passes
the ball to teammate Natasha Sevigny Thursday.
CALEXICO 61, STEELE CANYON 26 - TIFFANIE CROSS and RITA PIRAINO scored 11 points apiece, but it wasn't enough to keep outmanned Steele Canyon from suffering its third loss in as many games in Thursday's (Dec. 19) San Diego Kiwanis Tournament game at Mira Mesa.
Piraino added 9 rebounds for the Cougars, while Cross added 8 caroms.
Lizeth Lopez, the Southeastern Conference scoring leader, led Calexico (5-2) with 28 points.
Other Steele Canyon scoring: Cassie Glover
2, Teresa Crawfis 2.

POWAY - GOTCHA! Revenge is sweet. After
losing in double overtime to No.
5-ranked Rancho Bernardo on Saturday (Dec. 14), coach DARIN CURTIS'
El
Capitan Vaqueros were more than happy to have a rematch in Wednesday's
(Dec.
18) opening round of the Granite Hills Invitational. Second time
was
certainly the charm as the visiting Vaqueros busted the Broncos
59-44.
JESSICA CABLE cranked in 22 points (giving
her 49 in her last two games) and
collected 15 rebounds to help cement El Capitan's 6th win in seven
starts.
"This game was a far cry from the other
night," Curtis said. "Jessica
probably had 5 or 6 inside buckets as she was able to take 30
seconds off the
(shot) clock and still get a basket. She made a couple of 3-point-plays,
too."
El Capitan 6-foot freshman ALLISON DUFFY
"really stepped it up in the second
half when HEATHER MOLZEN was on the bench (foul trouble)."
Duffy finished with 12 rebounds, 7 points,
3 assists, 2 steals and 3 blocks.
Molzen, who was tagged with three fouls in the first half, wasn't
too bad in
the statistical column, either, totaling 13 points and 9 rebounds.
ALISSA UNDEN recorded 6 steals, sank El
Cap's only 3-pointer of the night and
totaled 11 points.
LYRIC TEIGEN chipped in with 6 points, 4
rebounds and 3 steals for the
Vaqueros, who outscored the Broncos 36-17 in the second half.
Other El Capitan scoring: None
SANTANA 66, SAN DIEGO 60 - AMANDA KRISMER scored a career-high 30 points,
including 18 of the Sultans 19 points in the third quarter, as
Santana
spanked San Diego in the Granite Hills Invitational opener on
Wednesday (Dec.
18) at Granite Hills.
The Cavers may blame the outcome on the
absence of 6-foot-3 junior Charde
Houston, who boasts an average of 36 points per game.
"If we played like this with Charde
Houston there, we'd have lost," said
Sultans coach WADE VICKERY. "She's definitely worth more
than six points a
game."
It was reported that Houston went to Texas to visit her ill grandmother.
So the spotlight was on Krismer.
"She took over the game," Vickery
said. "She did everything - rebounding,
diving for loose balls, keeping the ball alive to give us another
scoring
opportunity. This has been two great games in a row for her."
JAIME RANSOM also came up big for Santana
(8-0), finishing with 18 points,
including three 3s and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Freshman JORDAN FRANEY contributed 14 points for the unbeaten Sultans.
Other Santana scoring: Courtney Ash 3, Heather Thomas 1.
WEST HILLS 55, VISTA 38 - JULIE STRICK served up 20 points, including a pair
of 3-pointers, dished off 4 assists, and made 3 steals as the
Wolf Pack (5-2)
declawed the Panthers in Wednesday's (Dec. 18) Granite Hills Invitational
opener in North County.
"We did a good job on team full-court
pressure defense," West Hills coach
DAVE BURGESS said. "We had a very big middle (outscoring
the Panthers 33-16
in the middle quarters)."
Strick scored all but two of her points in the second and third periods.
"Julie worked the ball around and took
time off the clock in the fourth
quarter after we got a sizable lead," Burgess said.
AIME CORDEIRO added 10 points, including
a pair of 3s, while BETH TRONERUD
tacked on 8 points and garnered 6 rebounds for West Hills.
CAITLIN WEISS contributed 7 points and 3
steals, while ERIN HOURIGAN
patrolled the boards for 8 rebounds, dished off 5 assists, blocked
2 shots
and made 4 steals.
Other West Hills scoring: Hourigan 4, Jordan Russo 4, Samantha Ramsey 2.
GRANITE HILLS 57, CHULA VISTA 44 - Led by 3-point sharp-shooter JOELLE
BUNNELL's 23 points, the Eagles ran their season record to 6-1
as they set
down the Spartans in Wednesday's (Dec. 18) Granite Hills Invitational
opener
at Clairemont.
Chula Vista foolishly threw a zone defense
at the Eagles, and Bunnell
capitalized by ringing up five 3-pointers, giving her 20 treys
for the season.
All-purpose performer JEANNIE CASE contributed
10 points, 10 rebounds, 7
assists and 7 steals for Granite Hills.
Despite the relatively easy victory, Granite
Hills coach JAY ROWLETT said "We
didn't play defense like we usually do."
MEAGAN ST. JOHN had one of her best games
for the Eagles, tossing in 7 points
and snaring 8 rebounds. BRENDA NAJORS also had 8 rebounds, while
AMY HOYT
handed out 6 assists and Bunnell pilfered 6 passes.
Other Granite Hills scoring: Jennifer Whitmoyer
5, Najor 4, Hoyt 4, Jenny
Holden 4.
POWAY 46, MOUNT MIGUEL 34 - Mount Miguel coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL was stunned
after his Matadors suffered their first loss in seven starts in
Wednesday's
(Dec. 18) Granite Hills Invitational opener in El Cajon.
"They (Poway's Titans) had only one
foul in the first half," Sandoval
complained. "But we turned the ball over way too many times
at the beginning."
Nevertheless, the Matadors (6-1) jumped
out to an 8-2 lead before Poway
switched to a match-up zone.
"We had problems with that defense all night," Sandoval lamented.
Senior guard CHRISTINE FITZGERALD was the
only Mount Miguel player to reach
double figures, finishing with 12 points and 5 steals.
KAYLA HENRY tallied only 5 points, but led the team with 6 rebounds.
Poway pummeled the Matadors from the free
throw line, hitting 16-of-22 while
Mount Miguel hit a mere 3-of-6.
Other Mount Miguel scoring: Ijal Barnes
8, Genevieve Costello 6, Jerica
Williams 6.
MIRA MESA 54, VALHALLA 44 - MEGAN ALEXANDER rolled a double-double of 12
points and 10 rebounds and JENNIFER KOLEGRAFF (10 points, 4 steals)
led the
supporting cast, but the Norsemen (4-2) came up short in Wednesday's
(Dec.
18) San Diego Kiwanis Tournament opener at Mira Mesa.
Valhalla coach ROBERT WILSON noted that
the Norsemen were having difficulty
converting close-range shots "missing half of 46 shots within
2 feet."
Alexander was on the mark, hitting 6 of
12 field goals, but her teammates
could not follow suit. KRISTINA FLEMING hauled down 9 rebounds
and ANGEL
BURCH handed out 4 assists.
Other Valhalla scoring: Jasmine Beauchamp
8, Chelsea Kitchens 5, Lauren
Sheppard 4, Fleming 4, Adriana Malone 3, Burch 1.
UNIVERSITY CITY 62, GROSSMONT 57 - Sometimes it's the little things that make
the difference. The Foothillers (5-3) found this out for the second
night in
a row as poor foul shooting and costly fouls led to defeat in
Wednesday's
(Dec. 18) first round of the Granite Hills Invitational at Vista.
"We shot 11 for 23 from the line tonight,"
said coach WALLEY YEAKLE. "Going
into this game, we were at 72 per cent as a team. We shoot our
average and
we win."
Fouls also played a big part, as Grossmont
sophomore guard, JACLYN GOLDBARG
fouled out in the third quarter for the second consecutive game.
The
Foothillers found themselves down by 12 to start the fourth quarter.
Freshman SAM MOHAN filled in at the point and gave a huge spark to the team.
"Sam really gave us a lift after Jaclyn
fouled out," said Yeakle. "Her
ball-handling skills are improving each game."
MARISA MOHAN, known more for her rebounding,
stepped up for a team-best 20
points in the loss. She hit 7 of 12 shots from the floor and grabbed
a
team-high 10 rebounds for Grossmont. HEATHER HEMINGWAY clicked
on 8 of 12
shots to finish with 19 points and 8 rebounds.
Two free throws by Hemingway and a Mohan
lay-up cut the Centurions' lead to 4
with a minute remaining, but the Hillers could get no closer.
Despite her early departure, Goldbarg checked
out with 9 points, 7 assists
and 4 rebounds.
Other Grossmont scoring: Laura Felice 3,
Lyndsay Felice 2, Samantha Mohan 2,
Taryin Casillas 2.
JULIAN 48, MONTE VISTA 43 (OT) - The Monarchs (2-10) overcame a 16-point
halftime deficit sparked by a 17-4 third-quarter scoring run to
force
overtime, but then came up empty in Wednesday's (Dec. 18) extra
four-minute
stanza of the Coronado Round-Robin Tournament.
Julian claimed a 6-1 scoring edge in overtime to gain the victory.
RACHEL VORMAN paced Monte Vista with 12
points and 9 rebounds, while teammate
TASHANA HOWELL chalked up 12 points, corralled 7 rebounds and
6 steals.
KRYSTLE BEGLEY bagged 9 rebounds and SHALIA
BOHANNON pilfered 9 passes for
the Monarchs.
Other Monte Vista scoring: Begley 5, Bohannon
5, Pearl Craft 4, Phylicia
Reddick 3, Sara Peckinpaugh 2.
SAN MARCOS 72, STEELE CANYON 17 - The first-year Cougars (0-2) were no match
for the Knights in Wednesday's (Dec. 18) San Diego Kiwanis Tournament
opener
at Mira Mesa.
A 23-4 scoring splurge by San Marcos put
the Cougars down 41-11 by
intermission.
RITA PIRAINO led Steele Canyon with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 2 steals.
Other Steele Canyon scoring: Erica Fletcher
4, Cassie Glover 2, Teresa
Crawfis 1.
(12-18-02)
Santana's Amie Leach (55) defends the basket against
Granite Hills' Brenda Najor (right) on Tuesday (12-17-02).
EastCountySports.com staff report
SAN DIEGO - Usually, when a tournament director compiles a bracket, he makes sure the host team avoids the premier teams until the final rounds. Credit Granite Hills coach JAY ROWLETT for stepping up to an early challenge, as he elected to have his Eagles test seven-time San Diego CIF champion Santana in the opening round of his own Granite Hills Invitational.
Great idea, bad choice.
In a turnover-filled contest Tuesday (Dec. 17), perennial power Santana scuttled Granite Hills' upset bid with a 71-57 victory at Clairemont High.
After the Eagles (5-1) built an early 13-point lead, the Sultans (7-0) suddenly were scrambling after Granite Hills rallied to claim a 37-35 lead midway through the third period.
Both teams turned up the pressure, resulting in 36 turnovers for Santana and 39 for Granite Hills - a stunning total of miscues for a pair of teams that entered the game undefeated.
"This game was a lot closer than the final score indicates," Santana coach WADE VICKERY said. "(Granite Hills) plays full-court man and they really come after you. I was impressed by how hard they played."
Vickery was equally impressed by the performance of Sultans senior AMANDA KRISMER, who collected 10 points, 11 rebounds, 6 steals and 4 assists.
"During crunch time, she really put on a show," the coach said. "She played her best in the second half (8 points and 7 rebounds)."
Although Santana sailed in front 20-7 early
in the second quarter, Granite Hills made a swift recovery on
the outside shooting of JOELLE BUNNELL, who sank four 3-point
baskets en route to a 16-point finish. AMY HOYT followed by
converting consecutive baskets off the Eagles' press, hitting
a short jumper
and a driving lay-up for the team's first lead with 5:01 left
in the third
quarter.
However, Santana went on a 19-4 spurt to
close the period and take a 54-41
advantage after three periods.
Santana freshman center JORDAN FRANEY scored
7 points in 58 seconds, first
taking a Krismer feed for a lay-up while being fouled for a 3-point
play.
Franey (12 points, 8 boards) scored off an offensive rebound,
then took
another Krismer pass for another bucket from the paint, as Santana
successfully pounded the ball inside.
In addition, JAIME RANSOM and MARGEAUX BASS
balanced the Sultans' attack,
adding 25 and 17 points respectively. Ransom registered 7 of her
points in
the opening period to build the early lead, while Bass also notched
10 points
and recorded 4 steals. Bass continued her pinpoint passing with
10 assists.
"We played well for the most part,"
Rowlett said. "We had two key people foul
out in the third quarter and that hurt us. But the game was a
lot closer than
the 14-point margin."
For Granite Hills, JENNIFER WHITMOYER (6
for 11 from the floor) tallied 8 of
her 14 points in the final period, while JEANNIE CASE canned 4
straight shots
from the field in the first half for her 8 points.
Case also logged 4 steals, 5 assists and
8 rebounds. BRENDA NAJOR attacked
the boards for 8 rebounds and came away with 4 steals.
Santana scoring: Courtney Ash 7, Robin Appleby 2.
Granite Hills scoring: Najor 4, Jenny Holden
2, Amanda McCurdy 2, Meagen St.
John 2.

Mount Miguel's Ijal Barnes
puts up a shot against Clairemont on Tuesday (12-17-02).
Mount
Miguel's Jerica Williams sends a jumper to the basket on Tuesday
(12-17-02) against Clairemont.
MOUNT MIGUEL 59, CLAIREMONT 39 - The Matadors welcomed the return of
CHRISTINE FITZGERALD to the lineup as they blew past the host
Chieftains in
Tuesday's (Dec. 17) opening round of the Granite Hills Invitational.
Fitzgerald scored six of her 10 points in
the opening quarter, as Mount
Miguel mounted a 22-6 lead en route to running its record to a
perfect 6-0 on
the young season.
Fitzgerald said she had knee surgery on
July 17th to repair the ACL in both
knees after getting hurt in a summer scrimmage with her club teams.
"I've had this date circled on the
calendar for a long time, although I was a
little rusty," said Fitzgerald, who played 20 minutes.
The senior point guard also recorded 8 rebounds,
7 assists, 5 steals and
blocked a pair of shots. KAYLA HENRY paced Mount Miguel with 19
points and 9
rebounds, while IJAL BARNES added 14 and 8 rebounds.
Point guard GENEVIEVE COSTELLO generated 9 points, 6 assists and 3 steals.
Mount Miguel scoring: Dorian Steel 2, Jerica

EL CAPITAN 62, UNIVERSITY CITY 45 - JESSICA CABLE collected a game-high 27
points, as El Capitan put the defensive clamps on University City
standout
Brigayle Iglehart Tuesday's (Dec. 17) first-round action of the
Granite Hills
Invitational. The Vaqueros limited Iglehart to 11 points.
Meanwhile, El Capitan (5-1) enjoyed a balanced
attack, as ALISSA UNDEN scored
14 points, while HEATHER MOLZEN recorded 13 points and 13 rebounds.
ALLISON DUFFY also added 10 boards and 5
assists while blocking 3 shots for
the Vaqueros.
Tied at 16-all after a period, El Cap outscored
the Centurions 18-13 and 15-6
over the next two quarters to mount a 14-point advantage.
"We played our hearts out in that Rancho
Bernardo (70-68 double overtime
loss) on Saturday," El Capitan coach DARIN CURTIS said. "So
it was hard to
get back on track."
El Capitan travels to Rancho Bernardo for
a rematch on Wednesday (Dec. 18) at
6 p.m.
El Capitan scoring: Duffy 4, Emily Peters 2, Lyric Teigen 2.
RANCHO BERNARDO 72, GROSSMONT 54 - The fifth-ranked Broncos of Rancho
Bernardo (5-1) had to be asking themselves, just who were these
visiting
Foothillers, as Grossmont looked to take the lead with the score
knotted at
30 apiece deep into the second quarter of Tuesday's (Dec. 17)
first round
Granite Hills Invitational match-up.
Rancho Bernardo's inability to pressure
Grossmont's sophomore guard JACLYN
GOLDBARG in the second quarter allowed the Hillers some easy baskets
on the
press break. When the Broncos double team came, Goldbarg was able
to find
LAURA FELICE on the wing for three consecutive 3-pointers. Goldbarg
also had
a 3 of her own.
Grossmont then turned the tables on the
Broncos by applying their own full
court pressure, and key steals by HEATHER HEMINGWAY, MARISA MOHAN
and ANNIE
GONZALEZ all led to Foothiller scores.
"The momentum obviously had turned
our way," said coach WALLEY YEAKLE. "In
that 2nd quarter, the girls realized they could compete with this
team and
possibly win the game. I was very pleased with their tenacity."
Unfortunately, foul trouble had also crept
into the Hillers' plans as
Goldbarg was whistled for her 3rd, followed shortly by Hemingway's
and
Mohan's 3rd as well.
Goldbarg quickly picked up her 4th foul
and was eliminated with her 5th just
3 minutes into the 3rd quarter. Gonzalez and TARYIN CASILLAS did
a nice job
filling in at the point. Rebounder extraordinaire Heather Hemingway
also
fouled out in the 3rd quarter.
The experienced Broncos took full advantage
and extended their lead to 56-45
at the end of 3.
LAURA FELICE and MARISA MOHAN led the Foothillers
with 13 and 12 points,
respectively.
LYNDSAY FELICE (10 points) did her best
to keep the score close, scoring 10
points for Grossmont, as did Mohan, who finished with 12. In the
end foul
trouble was too much to overcome.
The contest was tied with 2:40 to play in the first half, but RB had nine-point lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Broncos held the Foothillers scoreless for nearly seven minutes as they went on a 13-0 run to push the lead to 19 with 3:44 to play in the game.
The Broncos forced 19 second-half turnovers, including 13 in the fourth quarter. For the game, Grossmont had 34 turnovers.
West Hills' Julie Strick goes up with
a shot against Eastlake on Tuesday (12-17-02).
EASTLAKE 60, WEST HILLS 42 - The Wolf Pack (4-2) fell behind 14-6 after one
quarter and never recovered as Eastlake rolled to the victory
in Tuesday's
(Dec. 17) Granite Hills Invitational opener.
JULIE STRICK popped in 13 points, handed
out 4 assists and pulled down 4
rebounds to pace the Wolf Pack. ERIN HOURIGAN rolled a double-double
with 11
points and 10 rebounds, while blocking 2 shots and recording 2
steals.
Other West Hills scoring: Caitlin Weiss 9, Beth Tronerud 5, Aime Cordeiro 4.
CORONADO 34, MONTE VISTA 31 - The visiting Monarchs couldn't maintain a
17-11 halftime lead in Tuesday's (Dec. 17) Coronado Tournament
game.
RACHEL VORMAN rolled in 7 points and grabbed
11 rebounds for the Monarchs
(2-9). TASHANA HOWELL also cleared 10 caroms, while SHALIA BOHANNON
logged 6 steals.
Other Monte Vista scoring: Pearl Craft 5, Bohannon 4, Howell 4, Krystle Begley 2, Ashley Miller 2.
FRANCIS PARKER 70, HELIX 40 - DIANA LEASAU laid in 11 points, grabbed 5
rebounds and handed out 5 assists for the Highlanders (1-5) in
a non-league
loss at Francis Parker. CHASITY TOILOLO added 8 points and a dozen
rebounds
for Helix.
Other Helix scoring: Desiree Marheine 7,
Sierra Francisco 6, Racquel Primas
4, Ashley Glenn 2, Robyn Jordan 2.

RANCHO BERNARDO - Fouls and free throws
added up to El Capitan's first defeat
of the season Saturday night (Dec. 14). But Vaqueros' coach DARIN
CURTIS
wasn't dismayed by his club's 70-68 double-overtime loss to Rancho
Bernardo
in the finals of the Bronco Invitational.
"We started out big, then they had
a big rally in the second quarter," said
Curtis, whose Vaqueros led 17-7 after one quarter and 31-27 at
the break. And
then things really started to heat up as the Broncos outscored
visiting El
Capitan 21-12 in the final period to force overtime.
Five Vaqueros fouled out - the only starter left was ALISSA UNDEN.
ALLISON DUFFY fouled out at the beginning
of third quarter, HEATHER MOLZEN
fouled out at the end of regulation, and JESSICA CABLE, LYRIC
TEIGEN and
JENNY HOLLEY all fouled out in the overtime periods.
"IYSHIA HERNANDEZ came off the bench with big steals for us," Curtis said.
At the end of regulation, Rancho Bernardo
hit 2 clutch free throws to tie it
at 59 all.
Tournament MVP Cable made two big shots
before fouling out in the first OT,
and Teigen was 1-for-2 at the line to send the game into the second
OT with
the score knotted at 64.
Rancho Bernardo was 5-for-6 on free throws
in the two OT periods combined and
27-for-38 in the game.
"They killed us with their free throws," Curtis commented.
On the other side, El Capitan was a paltry 12-for-23.
Rancho Bernardo, ranked No. 5 in the preseason
polls, scored the first four
points in the second OT. With 36 seconds left and all the Vaqueros'
big girls
disqualified by fouls, Hernandez stole the ball and got a lay-up
to cut the
Broncos lead to 68-66.
With 16 seconds left, Hernandez again stole
the ball and passed it to Unden
for a lay-up to tie the game at 68-all.
But the Broncos prevailed when they executed
a deep inbound pass to Sarah
Auten, who popped in the game-winning lay-up as time expired.
"There was no way we expected to be in the game at that time," Curtis said.
Was it good luck or good coaching?
"It was good role players on the bench,"
Curtis acknowledged. "I threw them
in the game and they came through."
Cable collected 24 points and 12 caroms
for El Capitan, while Molzen rolled a
double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds. Unden netted a trio
of threes on
her way to 14 points, 5 assists and 3 steals.
Teigen's totals included 10 rebounds and
6 assists, while Duffy chimed in
with 6 rebounds and 3 blocks.
El Capitan meets University City on Tuesday
(Dec. 17) in the first round of
the Granite Hills Invitational, while Rancho Bernardo faces Grossmont.
If
both teams either win or lose, they could end up in a rematch
on Wednesday
(Dec. 18).
Other El Capitan scoring: Teigen 7, Duffy
5, Mallorie Montgomery 3, Hernandez
2.
SANTANA 62, RAMONA 50 - If Santana's uninspiring, 30-turnover performance
was
the Sultans poorest performance of the young season, imagine what
would
happen if coach WADE VICKERY's troops were on the ball.
Despite the lackluster outing, four Sultans
still scored in double figures,
including a game-high 16 from senior JAIME RANSOM, as the hosts
held off
Ramona, 62-50, in the championship game of the Coca-Cola/Santana
Classic.
"I was frustrated by our effort,"
said Ransom, who also registered 8 rebounds
and 4 steals. "It was not the way we should play."
Expectations including a meeting with Mt.
Carmel in the tournament finale,
but the Sundevils were upset by Ramona by a single point in the
semifinal.
Thus, Santana came out sluggish after gaining a rematch against
a foe it
handled by 36 points during round-robin play.
Still, Santana opened a 25-13 lead midway
through the second quarter, then
quelled a late Ramona rally with consecutive three-point plays
by freshman
JORDAN FRANEY and GABBY PASSENTINO. MARGEAUX BASS then completed
a quick 7-0
run by scoring off an offensive rebound to build a 61-43 margin
with 2:31
remaining.
"We did not come ready to play - we
were not prepared," added Ransom, who has
Cal Poly (SLO) and San Diego State among her top college choices
to study
business and marketing. "I guess our defense kept us ahead."
Bass finished with 12 points off the bench,
while Franey and AMANDA KRISMER
added 11. Krismer also notched 9 boards and 3 assists.
Santana held a 29-21 halftime advantage,
but came out flat to open the second
half.
"We thought they looked tired and we
could catch them being flat-footed,"
said Ramona coach Dan Marshall. "But we couldn't get good
shots against their
defense."
The Sultans committed eight of their turnovers
in the third period, but were
surprised to learn they connected on 8-of-10 shots from the field
during the
stanza to maintain the lead.
"We were out-hustled and out-toughed
tonight," said Vickery of his undefeated
Sultans (6-0). Ramona fell to 4-4 overall, including a 79-43 whipping
by
Santana earlier in the event.
The Bulldogs also registered 30 turnovers,
then made just 2 of 12 shots down
the stretch to stymie their comeback hopes. Santana posted a 46-29
rebounding
advantage, while making 19 of 49 shots; Ramona converted 18-for-52
from the
floor.
Other Santana scoring: Gabby Passentino 6, Courtney Ash 4, Heather Thomas 2.
CARLSBAD 82, GROSSMONT 68 - Facing a much taller and more experienced
Carlsbad team proved too much for the Foothillers as they lost
their first
game of the season 82-68 in Saturday's (Dec. 14) Grossmont Tournament
championship game.
"We came out a little apprehensive,
and it cost us," said Grossmont coach
WALLEY YEAKLE. "They jumped on us early and we had trouble
responding."
Carlsbad led 24-13 after one quarter, and
pushed the advantage to 47-23 by
intermission.
The second half was like a flip-flop of
the first, with Grossmont looking
like the team in control.
A couple of offensive and defensive adjustments
combined with an inspiring
halftime talk by Yeakle seemed to work wonders for the Hillers.
"Coach reminded us again that this
was our tournament and our gym," said
point guard, JACLYN GOLDBARG. "We knew we were better than
we played in the
first half, and coach kind of lit a fire for us."
Offensively Grossmont spread the floor and
let Goldbarg dissect Carlsbad's
man-to-man defense, dishing out 10 assists and scoring 19 of her
23 points
in the second half. When shots were missed, HEATHER HEMINGWAY
was there for
the rebounds and the put-backs.
Hemingway finished with a career-high 18
rebounds to go with her 15 points,
which included 6-for-10 shooting. Goldbarg and Hemingway were
named to the
al-tournament team.
Defensively, Grossmont's full court pressure
finally got to Carlsbad and
enabled the Foothillers to cut the Lancers lead to 10 points in
the fourth
period. But that was as close as the Foothillers would come.
As for Grossmont's siblings show, MARISA
MOHAN contributed 10 points and her
sister SAM MOHAN, chipped in 4. The Felice sisters, however, were
pretty much
held in check, although LAURA FELICE delivered a pair of threes.
CHASITY TOILOLO of Helix and JULIE STRICK
of West Hills were also named to
the All-Grossmont Tournament team. Carlsbad's Alex Jackson was
the MVP.
All-tournament selection Amy Van Hollebeke scored 23 points and Jackson added 19 points for the Lancers
Other Grossmont scoring: Taryin Casillas 8, Lyndsay Felice 2,
MONTE VISTA 39, ST. GREGORY 38 - Junior TASHANA HOWELL scored 12 points to
lead the Monarchs to a consolation game victory over St. Gregory
in
Saturday's (Dec. 14) final round of the Francis Parker Tournament.
Howell
connected for the Monarchs only 3-pointer and nailed 3 of 4 free
throws.
PEARL CRAFT canned 9 points and pilfered
2 passes, while SHALIA BOHANNON
chipped in with 6 points, including 4-for-4 shooting from the
free throw line
for the Monarchs. She also nabbed 5 rebounds.
The Monarchs (2-8), who led 32-19 after
three quarters, nearly succumbed to
St. Gregory's pressing defense in the final period. Monte Vista
managed to
hang on, thanks to making 7 free throws during the final eight
minutes.
PHYLICIA REDDICK made what proved to be
the winning free throw as she sank
the second of her two chances giving Monte Vista a 39-36 lead
with 14 seconds
remaining.
The Monarchs then defended the 3-point arc
and St. Gregory had to settle for
two points at the buzzer and left town with a one-point loss.
Reddick also made a team-high 5 steals,
KRYSTLE BEGLEY bagged 5 rebounds as
did Bohannon.
Other Monte Vista scoring: Rachel Vorman
5, Reddick 5, Begley 2.

LA MESA - The Helix Highlanders snapped
a 30-game losing streak Friday (Dec.
13) as they defeated Madison 58-43 in a Grossmont Tournament game.
Relief for
sure, but first-year head coach TERRY HINDS has big plans for
his Highlanders
(1-4) this season.
"Defense is the key," said Hinds,
who plans to use that as the foundation of
Helix's resurgence.
That and the rebounding might of powerful
CHASITY TOILOLO, who has corralled
56 caroms - 19 against Madison - in the Highlanders last three
games. Toilolo
also rang up 11 points in Helix's first win in three seasons,
one point less
than SIERRA FRANCISCO.
Toilolo pilfered 7 Madsion passes as did
DIANA LEASAU (8 points, 3 rebounds,
2 assists). Toilolo also notched a team-high 5 assists.
Other Helix scoring: Racquel Primas 8, Desiree
Marheine 8, Molly Williams 3,
Leasau 8, Allums 3, Brandi Wilson 2, Stevi Browne 2, Robyn Jordan

EL CAPITAN 52, STOCKDALE 20 - Those who are close to El Capitan coach DARIN
CURTIS know that he believes this could well be the finest girls
basketball
team in the Vaqueros' history.
After the first four games of the season,
few can argue. This group wastes no
time in deflating the egos and hopes of its opponents.
The Vaqueros (4-0), who play host Rancho
Bernardo (3-1) for the Bronco
Invitational championship Saturday (Dec. 14) at 8 p.m., blew Bakersfield
Stockdale off the court in the opening quarter 21-2.
"We came out firing," said Curtis,
whose Vaqueros led 38-8 at the break. "But
play defense and rebound is what we do best. We're still pressing
and
trapping. The best part of that is if they break through they
run into a wall
(of 6-2 HEATHER MOLZEN and 6-foot ALLISON DUFFY)."
The Vaqueros led 38-8 at halftime and then cruised home with the victory.
Duffy led the Vaqueros statistical parade
with 14 points, 12 rebounds, 5
steals and 3 blocks, while Molzen muscled in 10 points, 13 rebounds
and
rejected 4 Stockdale shots.
Senior JESSICA CABLE was good for 13 points,
5 rebounds and 4 assists. ALISSA
UNDEN notched 7 points and 7 steals and JENNY HOLLEY chipped in
3 assists off
the bench.
Other El Capitan scoring: Mallorie Montgomery 5, Emily Peters 3.
GROSSMONT 86, MONTGOMERY 42 - The flashy Foothillers of Grossmont improved
to 5-0 in Friday's (Dec. 13) semifinals to earn the challenge
of facing
powerful Carlsbad (5-0) Saturday (Dec. 14) in the finals of the
Grossmont
Tournament at 11 a.m.
Grossmont erupted for 32 first quarter points
by hitting 14 of 20 shots.
LAURA FELICE (17 points overall) led the early onslaught with
13 first
quarter points, including three 3-pointers. MARISA MOHAN shot
4 for 4 in the
quarter, and HEATHER HEMINGWAY seemed to be everywhere, collecting
5 of her 8
boards to go with her 5 first-period points.
JACLYN GOLDBARG popped in 7 quick points,
including a trey, and TARYIN
CASILLAS dished out 6 of her 8 assists in the opening quarter
as well.
There was little let-up in the second quarter
as LYNDSAY FELICE went off for
10 of her game high 18 points, and Grossmont's lead grew to 56-25
at the half.
"We've been talking a lot about our
focus of late and tonight we came out
ready," said Grossmont coach WALLEY YEAKLE. "I was very
pleased. The second
half we were able to rest our starters a little but our bench
never let down.
Hopefully we'll come out with the same intensity for tomorrow's
final."
Casillas finished with some impressive numbers
of 10 points, 7 rebounds, 8
assists and 5 steals. Goldbarg cashed in 10 points, 6 rebounds
and a whopping
11 assists. Mohan settled for 14 points, while the Felice sisters
combined
for 35 points. Hemingway hung up 11 points and 8 rebounds.
Other Grossmont scoring: Samantha Mohan 6.
VALHALLA 58, MIRA MESA 46 - MEGAN ALEXANDER tallied 16 points and collected
10 rebounds and JENNIFER KOLEGRAFF contributed 12 points, 7 rebounds
and 4
assists as the Norsemen claimed their 4th win in five starts in
Fridays (Dec.
13) Grossmont Tournament game.
"This win was a team effort,"
Valhalla coach ROBERT WILSON said. "The bench
play of CHELSEA KITCHENS (9 points, 13 rebounds) SADE' CAMPBELL
(7 points,
6 rebounds) LAUREN SHEPPARD ( 6 points, 5 rebounds) was outstanding.
Campbell was full of energy tonight. Kitchens and Sheppard, both
freshmen,
showed that they will be a productive duo in the future."
Kolegraff's defensive effort on Mira Mesa's
Burnley was huge. Burnley, two
nights ago, went for 24 against Orange Glen.
Other Valhalla scoring: Jasmine Beauchamp 6, Kristina Fleming 2.

West Hills' Caitlin Weiss dribbles in the backcourt
against El Centro Southwest in a 52-27 victory Friday night at

the Wolf Pack to its 4th win in five starts in Friday's (Dec.
13) Grossmont
Tournament game.

3 steals to pace the Wolf Pack.
JULIE STRICK scored only 5 points, issued 6 assists and grabbed
6 rebounds.
ERIN HOURIGAN was steady as usual for West
Hills, ringing up 12 points,
picking off 3 steals and blocking a pair of shots.
BETH TRONERUD had a big scoring night with 10 points an added 5 rebounds.
Cordiero canned a trio of 3-pointers.
West Hills did receive some bad news as
3-point shooting specialist AMANDA
BROWN has been lost for the season with a knee injury.
Other West Hills scoring: Jordan Russo 6,
Natasha Chouinard 4, Samantha
Ramsey 1.
MARIAN CATHOLIC 31, MONTE VISTA 19 - The Monarchs (1-8) mustered their
poorest offensive effort of an already disappointing season Friday
(Dec. 13)
as they dropped Francis Parker Tournament decision to Marian Catholic.
TASHANA HOWELL led the Monarchs with 8 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals.
Other Monte Vista scoring: Ashley Miller
4, Pearl Craft 4, Rachel Vorman 2,
Phylicia Reddick 1.

on the offensive end against Horizon Thursday night. (12-12-02).
EastCountySports.com staff report
SPRING VALLEY - What do Granite Hills and Mount Miguel have in
common? Both are 5-0 in the Granite Hills Classic and WILL NOT
be in the tournament final.
Orange Glen will play San Diego due to a tiebreaker. The Patriots
and Cavers - also 5-0 in the event - are matched in Saturday's
(Dec. 14) finals at 1 p.m. in the Granite Hills Gym.
MOUNT MIGUEL 80, HORIZON 25 - KAYLA HENRY scored a career-high 29 points, snagged 5 rebounds and logged 2 steals and took a charge on defense, while GENEVIEVE COSTELLO added 14 points and 3 assists to help the unbeaten Matadors sit down visiting Horizon (0-6) in a Granite Hills Classic game Thursday (Dec. 12).
IJAL BARNES had 11 points and 10 rebounds
and 3 assists for the
while NATASHA EDWARDS added 8 points. JERICA WILLIAMS contributed
a game-high 5 assists.
"We're playing well, but when we play
teams like Santana, Kearny and El Cap,
we'll have to come out and pick it up," said Henry, a 5-foot-9
junior
forward. "We're playing well defensively, which will always
keep us in game."
Mount Miguel's defense took a bite out of Horizon, forcing 31 turnovers.
"Kayla gave us some good inside scoring," Mount Miguel coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL said.
Mount Miguel led 17-2 early in the second
before Horizon picked up its first
field goal. Nicole Nuff had 12 of Horizon's points, while SHANI
DANIELS, of
Spring Valley, had one point off the bench for the Panthers.
Edwards keyed the defensive effort on Thursday
night, taking two charges and
blocking a shot, while Henry also had three steals.
CHRISTINE FITZGERALD, who is recovering
from ACL surgery on both of her
knees, is expected back for the Granite Hills Invitational, which
begins
Tuesday (Dec. 17) when the Matadors travel to Clairemont.
Other Mount Miguel scoring: Teresa Melendez
7, Amanda Beasley 5, Antonique
Seales 4, Dorian Steel 1, Williams 1.
Mount Miguel's Dorian Steel looks for
room along the baseline Thursday night (12-12-02).

Granite Hills' Joelle Bunnell (4) sets for
a three-point attempt Thursday night (12-12-02) against San Marcos.
GRANITE HILLS 52, SAN MARCOS 21 - The Eagles got 14 points, 15 rebounds and
5 steals from BRENDA NAJOR, while JOELLE BUNNELL had 10 points,
including
her 12th and 13th threes plus 5 steals in Thursday's (Dec. 12)
Granite Hills
Classic victory.
JEANNIE CASE added 10 points and 4 rebounds
for the Eagles. But it was her
defense (6 steals) that caught the eye of Granite Hills coach
JAY ROWLETT.
"Najor had a real good game tonight,"
Rowlett said. "And Case held Kendra
Mitchell to 2 points. That's good - (Mitchell) scored 25 points
last night
against La Costa Canyon."
AMANDA McCURDY chipped in with 8 rebounds
and AMY HOYT tossed in 7 points for
Granite Hills.
The Eagles ended the first half on a 7-2
run, as Bunnell had three thefts in
the final two minutes. Hoyt canned a trey with 27 seconds to go
before
halftime. McCurdy converted a lay-up at the buzzer on a swift
pass from JENNY
HOLDEN, to give Granite a 24-11 edge at the break.
Other Granite Hills scoring: Amy Hoyt 7,
Jennifer Whitmoyer 5, Allison Hack
2, Amanda McCurdy 2.
VALHALLA 52, POINT LOMA 30 - Valhalla coach ROBERT WILSON couldn't believe
what he was witnessing in the first quarter of Thursday's (Dec.
12) Granite
Hills Classic contest at Point Loma.
"We were flatter than the plains of Oklahoma!" Wilson said.
JENNIFER KOLEGRAFF's 3-point bucket at the
buzzer pulled the Norsemen even at
5-5, a remarkable feat in itself considering Valhalla was only
2-for-20
shooting in the opening eight minutes.
"Jennifer was the catalyst to getting
the offense started," Wilson said. "Her
defensive efforts turned into lay-ups early in the second quarter
and we went
up 13-5 quickly in the second. Point Loma battled back all night
and we could
not pull away. It was not until the fourth quarter when the game
was finally
in hand."
JASMINE BEAUCHAMP, averaging 15 points for
the season, poured in 16 points
and grabbed 10 rebounds to pace Valhalla (3-1).
"She has become a great scorer for
us," Wilson said, "and is beginning to
understand how effective she can be on the court."
Kolegraff finished with 10 points and 7
steals, while ANGEL BURCH logged a
game-high 8 assists. MEGAN ALEXANDER added 6 points and 7 rebounds.
Other Valhalla scoring: Sade' Campbell 5,

EastCountySports.com staff report
LA MESA - Rekindling an old rivalry with
a fresh twist, Grossmont (4-0) and
Helix (0-4) went toe-to-toe in a surprisingly close encounter
Wednesday night
(Dec. 11) as the Foothillers narrowly escaped with a 58-55 Grossmont
Tournament victory.
It was an extremely physical contest - not
unusual when these two teams get
together.
Helix's strong-arm of last year, MARISA
MOHAN, now wears the blue and gold of
Grossmont. Matching her muscle was Helix's new center, CHASITY
TOILOLO, who
got Helix going by hitting a deep three and converting 3 of 4
free throws as
the Highlanders pushed in front 12-10 after one quarter.
"Helix came out with more emotion than
we did," said Grossmont coach WALLEY
YEAKLE. "Give them a world of credit, they came ready to
play and played very
hard".
Toilolo was a tiger, especially in the first
half. She totaled 16 points and
25 rebounds (by Helix's account, 14 by Grossmont tabulations).
No matter
who's count you believe,Toilolo was a menace to the Foothillers
and her
former teammate, Mohan who was forced to sit more than half the
game due to
early foul trouble.
"Chasity was really pounding," Helix coach TERRY HINDS said.
Yeakle agreed.
"She killed us with a couple of threes
and four or five put-backs," he said.
"Fortunately, we were able to slow her down some in the second
half."
The Hillers did so despite losing guard
JACLYN GOLDBARG and forward TARYIN
CASILLAS to fouls in the 4th quarter. The loss of those two, along
with
Marissa Mohan's foul problems truly taxed the Foothillers' bench.
Holding down the fort for Grossmont were
SAM MOHAN, who had two late steals,
HEATHER HEMINGWAY, who scored 11 points and the FELICE sisters,
LYNDSAY and
LAURA. Laura Felice, who finished the game with 9 points, buried
a clutch
3-pointer with 24 seconds remaining to put the Hillers up by 6
to ice the
game.
I'm proud of the way my girls overcame our
foul trouble and found a way to
win," said Yeakle. "It got pretty scary out there, but
our girls responded
when they needed to."
Goldbarg again led the way for the Hillers,
scoring 20 points on 8 of 16
shooting, including a pair of threes. Her counterpart, Helix's
DIANA LEASAU,
had an outstanding game of her own, leading Helix with 18 points,
6 rebounds,
3 assists and a pair of steals. BRANDI WILSON contributed 10 points
off the
bench for Helix.
"We're getting better every game,"
said Hinds, who is 0-4 in his first season
following the Highlanders 0-25 finish of a year ago. "I know
we can turn this
thing around. We just have to keep working."
Other Grossmont scoring: Lyndsay Felice 5, Marisa Mohan 2, Samantha Mohan 3.
Other Helix scoring: Desiree Marheine 4,
Racquel Primas 3, Natalie Glenn 2,
Molly Williams 2.
CHRISTIAN 49, WESTVIEW 40 - Patriots coach TIM JOLLETT called it a "miracle
finish." Label it four on the floor with five to play.
It was an astute assessment by Jollett,
considering host Christian played the
final five minutes of Wednesday's (Dec. 11) Granite Hills Classic
with just
four players after four of its starters had fouled out.
"The last five minutes are like a blur,"
Jollett said, who only has eight
players on his roster. "Unbelievable."
Freshman HEATHER MEIER was the lone starter
on the floor when the Patriots
somehow stretched a precarious 40-35 lead into a nine-point victory.
Meier
scored half of her 12 points in the final quarter.
"We played a box defense and I told
each of those four kids (including HOLLY
ERICKSON, GRACE GARCIA and RACHELLE FERRIREA) to keep a foot inside
the key,"
Jollett said. "Our kids got every rebound on defense."
Since all of Christians ball-handers had
been disqualified by fouls, the
Patriots were stressed to push the ball to the offensive end.
"They pressed us 5-on-3," Jollett
said. "We stacked at the free throw line
and then ran a circle to try to get somebody open. We did a good
job of
spreading the floor and screening for each other.
"I have to hand it to those four girls - they really came through."
Despite fouling out, RACHEL EDELEN led the Patriots with 13 points.
Other Christian scoring: Maggie McGill 8,
Kara McGill 5, Erickson 5, Jamie
Ray 4, Garcia 2.
SANTANA 89, UNIVERSITY CITY 47 - Freshman JORDAN FRANEY fired in 22 points
and hauled down 8 rebounds Wednesday night (Dec. 11) as the undefeated
Sultans (5-0) turned what has been a tense rivalry into a virtual
cakewalk.
The Sultans steamrollered to a 26-11 lead after one quarter of
the Coca Cola
Classic encounter, and compiled a 48-20 lead by intermission.
"This is the first time all year I've
felt that we played as well as we did
last year," Santana coach WADE VICKERY said. "Sort of
flashes of what we've
been in the past. We played with spirit and emotion."
Santana sails into Saturday's (Dec. 14)
championship game of the tourney
against Ramona at 7 p.m.
This was sweet victory for Santana, which
had beaten the Centurions in San
Diego CIF championship games in two of the past three years.
"Whether it was a good pass or a key
rebound, everybody did something
positive in this game (Wednesday night)," Vickery said.
Senior AMANDA KRISMER cashed in 21 points,
including 7-for-7 free throw
shooting for the Sultans, who also were bolstered by JAIME RANSOM's
15
points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals and two 3-pointers. Krismer's totals
included 7
rebounds, 4 steals and 4 deflections.
Santana's MARGUEAUX BASS continued her pinpoint
passing with 8 assists to go
along with 5 steals.
Other Santana scoring: Amie Leach 8, Courtney
Ash 6, Robin Appleby 4, Bass
4, Heather Thomas 4, Gabby Passentino 3, Carlee Ihm 2.
EL CAPITAN 68, MAR VISTA 8 - In the first couple of weeks of the season
there has clearly been a line drawn between the "haves"
and the "have-nots."
Make that the "cans" and the "cannots."
El Capitan coach DARIN CURTIS was almost
apologetic after his Vaqueros built
a 44-0 halftime lead over the hapless Mariners in a non-league
game Wednesday
night (Dec.11) in Lakeside. That's right, Mar Vista failed to
score during
the first 16 minutes.
"It was awful," Curtis said. "We
were just working on our defense, but we
must have blocked 20 shots. We played straight man-to-man in the
first half
and then dropped back into a zone and ran the shot clock in the
second half."
Senior JESSICA CABLE, the Vaqueros season
scoring leader, took a zero for the
team. Playing no more than one quarter, she spent her time on
the floor -
passing up shots and delivering the ball to her younger teammates.
"We played mostly with our freshmen," Curtis said.
Sophomore HEATHER MOLZEN more than doubled
Mar Vista's scoring with 19 points
to go along with 5 rebounds and 4 blocked shots.
Freshman ALLISON DUFFY contributed 17 points,
5 assists, 5 rebounds and 2
blocks, while ALISSA UNDEN chipped in 8 points and 3 assists.
Other El Capitan scoring: Hannah Gerken
6, Jenny Holley 4, Morgan Craig 4,
Emily Peters 4, Mallorie Montgomery 4, Lindsey Dominicak 2, Lyric
Teigen 2.
WEST HILLS 65, SWEETWATER 27 - Credit West Hills coach DAVE BURGESS for
calling off the jam after the opening quarter of Wednesday's (Dec.
11)
Grossmont Tournament blowout of Sweetwater. The Wolf Pack owned
a 22-0 lead
after the first eight minutes, and the makings for an even more
embarrassing
night for the visiting Red Devils was looming.
Burgess didn't let that happen.
"We pressed them in the first quarter
and then played them zone the rest of
the way," Burgess said.
JULIE STRICK (14 points, 5 steals, 3 assists),
AIME CORDEIRO (13 points, 3
steals), CAITLIN WEISS (12 points, 4 steals, 4 assists), and ERIN
HOURIGAN
(12 points, 3 rebounds) paced the Wolf Pack (3-1).
West Hills senior SAMANTHA RAMSEY scored
the first basket of her varsity
career, grabbed a team-high 6 rebounds and made 2 steals.
Other West Hills scoring: Natasha Chouinard
6, Jordan Russo 4, Beth
Tronerud 2.
SAN PASQUAL 99, STEELE CANYON 34 - Coach FRANK QUINONES wasn't upset that his
first-year varsity Cougars dropped their non-league inaugural
contest to
visiting San Pasqual Wednesday (Dec. 11). What irked the long-time
former
West Hills boys basketball assistant coach was how the Golden
Eagles achieved
their one-sided victory over Steele Canyon's senior-less squad.
San Pasqual led 31-3 after one quarter and 62-15 by halftime.
"Even after they got that big lead
they were still pressing us," Quinones
said. "I don't know what she (first-year San Pasqual coach
Nikki Gannon) was
thinking. The fact that she was jumping up and down near the end
of the game
every time her team scored (in an obvious quest to reach 100)
was truly
unprofessional. And I told her so after the game."
Perhaps, San Pasqual was venting its frustration
from a 119-46 shellacking
handed to them by San Diego the day before.
Juniors TIFFANIE CROSS poured in 17 points
to lead Steele Canyon, and RITA
PIRAINO added 10.
Other Steele Canyon scoring: Cassie Glover 5, Natasha Sevigny 2.
USDHS 52, MONTE VISTA 27 - Although the final score doesn't show it, Monte
Vista coach SANDY WRIGHT believes Wednesday's (Dec. 11) loss to
USDHS was
"actually the best we've played" this season.
"It's a step forward, instead of two
steps back," Wright said. "Now we have
to put it all together."
SHALIA BOHANNON paced Monte Vista (1-6)
with 12 points, 5 rebounds and 3
steals in the opening round game of the 22nd annual Francis Parker
Invitational. Senior point guard PHYLICIA REDDICK made her season
debut for
the Monarchs, contributing 6 points and 4 steals. The 5-foot-2
floor leader
also blocked a shot.
TASHANA HOWELL led the Monarchs with 7 rebounds.
Other Monte Vista scoring: Howell 4, Krystle
Begley 2, Rachel Vorman 2, Pearl
Craft 1.

SAN DIEGO - A three-minute dry spell toward
the end of the second quarter was
all that kept the visiting Valhalla Norsemen (2-1) from a probable
win over
host Scripps Ranch in Tuesday's (Dec. 10) Granite Hills Classic
game. The
Falcons capitalized on the Valhalla lull for a 12-2 scoring run
and held on
for a 53-44 victory.
"If we didn't have that one little
cold spell we'd be 3-0," Valhalla coach
ROBERT WILSON said.
Valhalla closed to within 32-31 early in
the third quarter. But a missed
lay-up and a couple of missed free throws enabled Scripps Ranch
to regain
command.
JASMINE BEAUCHAMP's 17 points and 10 rebounds led the Norsemen.
"Jasmine stepped up on both ends of the floor," Wilson said.
So did MEGAN ALEXANDER, who pocketed 12 points and 8 rebounds.
"Not only has Megan's physical game
gotten stronger but her mental game as
well," Wilson praised.
JENNIFER KOLEGRAFF added 7 points and 5
steals for Valhalla, while CHELSEA
KITCHENS collected 6 points and 7 rebounds. KRISTINA FLEMING cleared
6 caroms
off the glass.
Other Valhalla scoring: Angel Burch 2.
MOUNT MIGUEL 66, SAN MARCOS 20 - The Matadors came out with the kind of
attitude coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL has been looking for all season.
They were
tenacious on defense - even more than usual - as they knocked
out the
visiting Knights in Tuesday's (Dec. 10) Granite Hills Classic
contest.
"Much better than in the first three
games," said Sandoval, whose squad has
cruised to a 4-0 start despite the absence of its (injured) best
player
(Christine Fitzgerald).
Junior KAYLA HENRY (16 points, 8 rebounds,
3 steals), freshman JERICA
WILLIAMS (16 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals), and GENEVIEVE COSTELLO
(15
points, 6 assists) led the Mount Miguel onslaught.
Other Mount Miguel scoring: Ijal Barnes
5, Teresa Melendez 4, Dorian Steel
2, Natasha Edwards 7, Strawberry (?) Fields 2.
ESCONDIDO 62, CHRISTIAN 46 - At one stretch of Tuesday night's (Dec. 10)
Granite Hills Classic encounter at Christian, coach TIM JOLLETT's
lineup
included two sophomores and two freshmen. Signs of a promising
future for the
Patriots (1-3), but some hard times at the moment.
"Our girls played awesome," Jollett
said. "But that was a bigger, faster,
stronger and more experienced team. We did a great job of blocking
out on the
boards."
MAGGIE MCGILL paced the Patriots with 15
points, while RACHEL EDELEN chipped
in with 9 points and 6 rebounds.
Other Christian scoring: Jamie Ray 7, Heather
Meier 7, Grace Garcia 6, Kara
McGill 2.
LA JOLLA 52, MONTE VISTA 24 - PEARL CRAFT recorded a team-high 11 points,
but the rest of the Monarchs had trouble penetrating the defense
of Division
III power La Jolla, as the Vikings held the visitors to their
lowest
offensive output of the season in Tuesday's (Dec. 10) Coronado
Round Robin
Tournament game.
Craft buried four of her six shots from
the floor for Monte Vista (1-5), but
the team managed to convert just 8-of-30 shots, including a lone
bucket in
the game's opening 13 minutes as La Jolla built a 21-5 advantage.
SHALIA BOHANNON added 7 points and a pair
of rebounds for the Monarchs, while
KRYSTLE BEGLEY grabbed 8 boards and blocked a shot. TASHANA HOWELL
added 4
points and 4 assists.
Other Monte Vista scoring: Ashley Miller
1, Krystle Begley 1.

LA MESA - Sophomore guard JACLYN GOLDBARG
led another balanced attack as
Grossmont easily defeated Madison 75-21 Monday night (Dec. 9)
in a Grossmont
Tournament game. Goldbarg scored 25 points on 11 of 15 shooting,
including a
pair of treys as the Foothillers improved to 3-0.
Junior MARISA MOHAN contributed 15 points
and 9 rebounds, controlling the
boards at both ends of the court. Her sister, SAMANTHA, was a
force on
defense grabbing 5 steals and scoring 7 points.
Senior HEATHER HEMINGWAY was outstanding,
scoring 12 points on 6 of 7
shooting. She also collected 8 rebounds and chalked up 3 steals
as Grossmont
rolled to a 43-8 lead.
Junior SHARILYN CHAPIN brought the bench
to their feet, finishing a
length-of-court lay-up off a steal. Junior ANNIE GONZALEZ also
had 3 steals.
Other Grossmont scoring: Lyndsay Felice 8, Taryin Casillas 4, Laura Felice 2.
CARLSBAD 56, WEST HILLS 45 - With four minutes remaining in the third
quarter of Monday's (Dec. 9) Grossmont Tournament game, the Wolf
Pack had the
visiting Lancers on the ropes, 38-30. That's when the Pack's offense
stalled
and Carlsbad escaped with its third straight victory.
"Carlsbad won its first two games by
56- and 63-point margins," West Hills
coach DAVE BURGESS noted. "We had them, but couldn't put
the ball in the
basket the last 1 ? quarters. We missed a lot of easy shots."
ERIN HOURIGAN turned in a strong performance
to pace the Pack with a
team-high 14 points and 7 rebounds. JULIE STRICK chipped in with
9 points and
4 steals, while JORDAN RUSSO and BETH TRONERUD pulled down 9 and
6 rebounds,
respectively.
Other West Hills scoring: Caitlin Weiss
7, Aime Cordeiro 6, Tronerud 4, Russo
3, Natasha Chouinard 2.
GRANITE HILLS 51, MAR VISTA 24 - The Eagles soared to a 17-2
first-quarter lead and never touched down Monday (Dec. 9) as they
mauled host
Mar Vista in a Granite Hills Classic encounter.
JOELLE BUNNELL collected 11 points, 11 rebounds
and 6 steals to help the
Eagles achieve their fourth win without a loss. Bunnell popped
in a pair of
3-pointers, giving her 11 for the season.
"We gave up a lot of offensive rebounds
in the first half, Granite Hills
coach JAY ROWLETT said. "Our challenge in the second half
was to limit them
on the offensive boards."
BRENDA NAJOR chimed in with 10 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.
"We have to have that (second half)
kind of effort in every game," Najor
said. "We know we are not a big team. We need everyone to
contribute."
And the Eagles did flock together.
AMY HOYT rang up 9 points, including one
trey. JEANNIE CASE also played well,
with 6 rebounds and 4 assists to go with 8 points. JENNIFER WHITMOYER
logged
6 steals and 5 rebounds. JENNY HOLDEN hit a 3-pointer and finished
with 5
points and 3 rebounds.
Other Granite Hills scoring: Meagan St.
John 4, Amanda McCurdy 2, Whitmoyer
2.
MONTGOMERY 57, HELIX 48 - After falling behind by 12 points in the first
half, the young Highlanders cut the Aztecs' lead to four points
in the third
period but could not maintain their momentum in Monday's (Dec.
9) Grossmont
Tournament game at Grossmont.
Poor execution at the free throw line proved
costly to the Highlanders( 0-3),
who connected on only 8 of 32 chances.
Senior BRANDI WILSON led Helix with 9 points,
9 rebounds and 4 assists, while
CHASITY TOILOLO contributed 8 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
Senior
center SIERRA FRANCISCO cleared 10 rebounds and tossed in 7 points.
NATALIE GLENN nailed a pair of 3-pointers,
and ASHLEY PENN passed out 5
assists.
Other Helix scoring: Glenn 7, Racquel Primas
5, Diana Leasau 4, Robyn Jordan
4, Molly Williams 2, Penn 2.

POWAY - She's hardly classified information.
When you're 6-foot-2 and wear a
size 11 shoe, you can't hide. Not that El Capitan sophomore HEATHER
MOLZEN
seeks such a path. A budding star at the moment, Molzen has superstar
status
awaiting her in the foreseeable future. For now, Molzen will take
what she
gets, which is plenty.
In Saturday's (Dec. 7) foul-marred 70-47
romp over Poway in the Bronco
Invitational, Molzen posted a triple-double of 19 points, 15 rebounds
and 10
blocks as El Capitan rolled to its second win in as many starts.
"She's gaining confidence in herself
and her teammates are gaining confidence
in her," El Capitan coach DARIN CURTIS said of Molzen, who
carries a 4.6
grade-point-average. "She's going to be our most improved
player four years
in a row. We were chipping it over the top to her and she came
up huge
against Poway. And she's proven that she can catch the ball on
the run.
"We've shot better than 50 percent
in each of our games, and Heather is a
major reason why."
Molzen, who also charted 4 steals and 3 assists, had plenty of help.
ALISSA UNDEN and JESSICA CABLE poured in
13 points apiece, while 6-foot
freshman ALLISON DUFFY logged 12 points and 8 rebounds for El
Capitan. Unden
also created 7 steals, while Cable's package included 4 rebounds,
3 assists
and 3 steals.
"They (the officials) were calling
it pretty close (56 fouls between the 2
teams), but I thought we played pretty well in the first half,"
Curtis added.
Indeed. The Vaqueros were sitting on a 47-22 advantage after two quarters.
LYRIC TEIGEN was superb in a support role
with 9 points, 3 steals, 3 assists
and a pair of rebounds. MALLORIE MONTGOMERY scored only 4 points,
but pulled
down 6 rebounds.
EMILY PETERS and MORGAN CRAIG each logged 5 rebounds for El Cap.
SANTANA 79, RAMONA 43 - The pending showdown between perennial power Santana
and the awakening giants of El Capitan continues to build. The
Sultans skated
to their fourth straight win as AMANDA KRISMER and JAIME RANSOM
netted 15
points apiece in Saturday's (Dec. 7) Santana Coca Cola conquest.
MARGEAUX BASS hasn't lost her touch. After
missing the early stages of the
season with an injured knee, the junior standout contributed 10
assists for
the second game in a row, while making 7 steals, 7 field goals
-- including a
trey - and was 3-for-3 at the line for 10 points.
"She's about as happy as I am (for
her to be back)," Santana coach WADE
VICKERY said.
Vickery credited the play of COURTNEY ASH,
noting that the 5-foot-7 junior
had nearly gotten a triple-double by pulling down 10 rebounds,
making 10
deflections and tossing in 9 points, including a 3-pointer.
"She just makes plays," he said. "Those are the kind of players you want."
Freshman JORDAN FRANEY enjoyed a big night
with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
Krismer snagged 11 rebounds and Ransom added 6. Aside from her
usual
contributions, Vickery noted another plus for Ransom.
"Jaime had zero turnovers," he
said. "For someone who plays as much as she
does and touches the ball as much as she does . . . coaches like
to see that."
The Sultans advance to Wednesday's (Dec.
11) semifinals of the Coca Cola
Classic against perennial power University City - a team Santana
has met in
the San Diego CIF finals the last three years - at 7:30 in Santee.
Other Santana scoring: Heather Thomas 5,
Maria DeBarrows 4, Amie Leach 4,
Gabby Passentino 4.
MONTE VISTA 32, IMPERIAL 28 - Score one for coach SANDY WRIGHT and her
Monarchs. After opening the season with four straight losses,
the Monarchs
awarded their first-year head coach with a treasured victory in
Saturday's
(Dec. 7) Coronado Thanksgiving Tournament.
PEARL CRAFT scored 8 points, grabbed 5 rebounds
and swiped 4 passes, while
teammate SHALIA BOHANNON garnered 8 points, plucked 4 rebounds
and made 2
steals for Monte Vista.
RACHEL VORMAN and TASHANA HOWELL cleared
8 rebounds apiece for the Monarchs,
who used a 15-10 fourth-quarter edge (led by Bohannon's 6 points)
to overcome
an 18-17 deficit.
Other Monte Vista scoring: Krystle Begley
6, Ashley Miller 2, Sara
Peckenpaugh 2, Vorman 2.
GRANITE HILLS 50, VISTA 22 - JOELLE BUNNELL is the focus of the Granite
Hills attack, but the Eagles (3-0) have plenty of support for
their
sharp-shooting senior leader. Bunnell knocked down 15 points and
her 8th and
9th three-pointers of the season in Saturday's (Dec. 7) rout of
visiting
Vista.
Junior JENNIFER WHITMOYER also drilled in
15 points, while senior BRENDA
NAJOR chipped in 7 points and 11 rebounds to the winning cause.
Bunnell was
5-of-6 from the free throw line, while Whitmoyer was 4-for-5 and
also had a
trey.
MEGAN ST. JOHN added 9 rebounds and 5 points
for Granite Hills, which also
benefited from the 5 steals of JEANNIE CASE and Bunnell.
Other Granite Hills scoring: Amy Hoyt 3, Case 3, Amanda McCurdy 2.
VALHALLA 57, MAR VISTA 26 - For the second game in as many starts Valhalla's
story centered around MEGAN ALEXANDER in Saturday's (Dec. 7) Granite
Hills
Classic contest. The 6-foot senior rang up 16 points, sank 6 of
8 free throws
and grabbed 9 rebounds for the host Norsemen (2-0).
Valhalla's JASMINE BEAUCHAMP, a 5-11 senior,
was equally as impressive with
13 points and a dozen rebounds. JENNIFER KOLEGRAFF chipped in
with 9 points
and 6 steals.
"After being down 8-0 at the 5:43 mark
in the first quarter, we finally woke
up and started to play ball," said Norsemen coach ROBERT
WILSON.
ADRIANA MALONE's 3-pointer with just over
two minutes left in the first
quarter put Valhalla ahead to stay.
"You could say we ended the game on a 57-18 run," Wilson noted.
Valhalla is playing without key senior CATHY
RUSSO, who is feared lost for
the season with a torn ACL. She has had surgery and is trying
to work her way
back in time for the Grossmont South League season in January.
Other Valhalla scoring: Angel Burch 4, Kristina
Fleming 4, Chelsea Kitchens
2, Tracy Avakian 2, Cathy Bergen 1.
MOUNT MIGUEL 46, FALLBROOK 44 - Visiting Fallbrook jumped out to a 13-4
first-quarter lead behind the 7 points of Jana Lucy in Saturday's
(Dec. 7)
Granite Hills Classic, but the Matadors (3-0) pumped up their
steam in the
second quarter to lead 23-20 by halftime.
"We went to the press and got some
easy baskets," Mount Miguel coach ROBBIE
SANDOVAL said.
Maybe so, but it was the inside play of
5-9 junior forward KAYLA HENRY that
carried the torch for Mount Miguel. Henry scored 18 points and
cleared 8
rebounds.
Guard GENEVIEVE COSTELLO cast in 12 points
while dishing off 4 assists and
recording 6 steals for Mount Miguel.
Other Mount Miguel scoring: Jerica Williams
7, Ijal Barnes 5, Dorian Steel
2, Natasha Edwards 2.
PT. LOMA 33, CHRISTIAN 29 (OT) - Christian coach TIM JOLLETT had to rub his
eyes and take a second look when he saw his Patriots - who averaged
55 points
in a pair of season opening victories - repeatedly miss quality
shots in
Saturday's (Dec. 7) Granite Hills Classic encounter at Pt. Loma.
"We rebounded well against a bigger
team, played great defense," Jollett
said. "But we couldn't shoot a lick. Not from the floor,
not from the line."
MAGGIE MCGILL paced the Patriots with 11 points, including a pair of treys.
Other Christian scoring: Kara McGill 2,
Rachel Edelen 4, Jamie Ray 7,
Heather Meier 5.

EL CAJON - MEGAN ALEXANDER scored 16 points
and corralled 15 caroms to lead
the Valhalla Norsemen to a season-opening 58-49 victory over host
Clairemont
in Friday's (Dec. 6) Granite Hills Classic.
JASMINE BEAUCHAMP chipped in with 14 points,
while KRISTINA FLEMING charted 6
points and 10 rebounds for Valhalla.
This was a balanced effort for the Norsemen,
who also received 6 points and 5
assists from JENNIFER KOLEGRAFF. CHELSEA KITCHENS bagged 7 rebounds.
Valhalla overcame a 16-point deficit thanks
to a stellar performance from
seniors Kolegraff and Beauchamp as well as freshman guard Sheppard.
"Clairemont's big three (Braden, Charles,
and Franka) scored 27 of the teams
31 points in the first half," Valhalla coach ROBERT WILSON
said. "These three
were held to a combined 10 points in the second half. Kolegraff
held Franka
to 0 points in the second and Sheppard held Charles to just 2
free throws.
"Megan's night was what I have come
to expect from her on a consistent
basis," Wilson said. "She worked very hard in the off-season
and is a much
stronger player this season Jasmine has big time scoring potential
this
season. She had 14 points in less than half the game and then
foul trouble!"
Other Valhalla scoring: Lauren Sheppard
6, Adriana Malone 6, Cathy Bergen 2,
Kitchens 1, Sade Campbell 1.
EL CAPITAN 87, VALLEY CENTER 39 - Junior guard ALISSA UNDEN scored 18 of her
21 points before halftime, and senior teammate JESSICA CABLE led
the Vaqueros
with 24 points and 11 rebounds, as El Capitan rolled over Valley
Center in a
Bronco Invitational game at Rancho Bernardo Friday night (Dec.
6).
Unden connected on 5-of-10 three-point attempts
and also had 7 steals and 5
assists. Her big first half helped the Vaqueros roll up a 48-19
lead at the
intermission.
LYRIC TEIGEN added 14 points for El Capitan,
including a three-pointer, while
sophomore center HEATHER MOLZEN contributed 13 points and 10 boards.

Holley 1.
SANTANA 69, RANCHO BUENA VISTA 41 - MARGEAUX BASS made her season debut
Friday (Dec. 6) as Santana broke open a 33-27 lead with a strong
second half.
Although Bass scored only 2 points, she
handed out 10 assists as the Sultans
improved to 3-0.
"For the first time out, I thought
Bass played extremely well," Santana coach
WADE VICKERY said.
"We went to our zone press in the third
quarter and picked up some points off
turnovers for an 8-0 run," Vickery added.
JAIME RANSOM led Santana with 21 points,
including 5-for-5 free throw
shooting. AMANDA KRISMER added 18 points (8-for-10 free throw
shooting) and 5
steals.
COURTNEY ASH canned four 3-pointers en route
to 14 points, and JORDAN FRANEY
fired in 7 points to go with 5 steals. HEATHER THOMAS contributed
4 assists.

ESCONDIDO - When JOELLE BUNNELL locks on,
the Granite Hills Eagles are almost
unbeatable. The 5-foot-7 senior scored 12 of her game-high 32
points in the

Cougars
74-56 in the second round of the Granite Hills Tournament.
Bunnell, who was 9-for-25 from the field
including a pair of 3-pointers, also
garnered 10 rebounds and 5 steals as the Eagles won for the second
time in as
many starts.
JEANNE CASE had a big game in Bunnell's
shadow, shuffling in 13 points, 8
steals and 5 rebounds.
MEAGAN ST. JOHN tossed in 11 points and
snagged 5 rebounds for Granite Hills,
while AMANDA MCCURDY cleared 10 rebounds to go along with 6 points.

WEST HILLS 60, HELIX 43 - Senior guard JULIE STRICK scored 18 points,
grabbed 6 rebounds and made 6 steals to lead the Wolf Pack to
its second
victory in as many starts in Thursday's (Dec. 5) Grossmont Tournament
victory
over Helix.
CAITLIN WEISS chimed in with 13 points,
6 rebounds and 4 assists for the Wolf
Pack, while ERIN HOURIGAN contributed 9 points, 5 rebounds and
3 blocks.
The main concern for West Hills is the availability
of 3-point shooter AMANDA
BROWN.
"In her first evaluation there was
too much swelling to get a clear
perspective of what was going on," Burgess said. "She
is supposed to have
further diagnosis on Monday."
After losing their opener by 53 points to
Carlsbad in front of a full house
in North County, the young Highlanders (0-2) made a respectful
showing
against West Hills.
Freshman DIANA LEASAU led the Highlanders
with 12 points, 4 rebounds and 4
assists. Freshman RACQUEL PRIMAS added 10 points and 5 assists,
while
sophomore CHASITY TOILOLO crashed the boards for 8 rebounds and
3 assists.
"It looks like Helix has some good
young players that should make them a much
better team in the future," West Hills coach DAVE BURGESS
said.
Other West Hills scoring: Jordan Russo 8,
Beth Tronerud 6, Aime Cordeiro 4,
Natasha Chouinard 2.
Other Helix scoring: Ashley Penn 7, Sierra
Francisco 5, Robyn Jordan 4,
Toilolo 3, Natalie Glenn 2.
CHRISTIAN 56, MAR VISTA 24 - MAGGIE MCGILL muscled in 18 points, grabbed 8
rebounds and blocked 3 shots as the Patriots (1-1) torpedoed the
visiting
Mariners in Thursday's (Dec. 5) Grossmont Tournament scuffle.
JAMIE RAY knocked down six 3-pointers on
her way to a team-high 20 points for
the Patriots.
"The thing I liked about this game
is we played great defense and we
rebounded very well," Christian coach TIM JOLLETT said. "Rebounding
is a big
deal for us since most of the teams we play are much bigger."
Other Christian scoring: Kara McGill 5, Grace Garcia 3, Heather Meier 2.
GROSSMONT 83, SWEETWATER 20 - Grossmont junior TARYIN CASILLAS poured in 18
points and collected 19 rebounds as the Foothillers smothered
the visiting
Red Devils in Thursday's (Dec. 5) second round Grossmont Tournament
game.
"I was very impressed with our team
defense and overall focus in tonight's
game," Grossmont coach WALLEY YEAKLE said, as his team improved
their record
to 2-0. "Everyone contributed tonight. It was a total team
effort."
A very balanced attack indeed as JACLYN
GOLDBARG, LYNDSAY FELICE and MARISA
MOHAN each enjoyed double-doubles on the night.
By the numbers it was Goldbarg 16 points,
10 assists, Lyndsay Felice 15
points, 15 rebounds, and Mohan 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Senior HEATHER HEMINGWAY added 4 points
and 7 rebounds. Junior LAURA FELICE
chipped in 9 points, and steadily improving freshman SAMANTHA
MOHAN banged in
10 points to go with her 8 rebounds.
The Foothillers put this one on ice after
one quarter as they led 25-2.

SANTEE - Junior COURTNEY ASH narrowly missed
a triple-double as she scored 10
points, notched 9 steals and made 8 deflections Wednesday night
(Dec. 4), as
host Santana mauled Montgomery 87-27 in a Coca Cola Classic encounter.
Ash
was one of four Sultans to reach double scoring digits as JAIME
RANSOM poured
in 28 points, AMANDA KRISMER tacked on 22 and JORDAN FRANEY tallied
10.
"We played well defensively, converted
our chances in the transition game,"
Santana coach WADE VICKERY said after his Sultans rolled their
record to 2-0.
"Overall, we were much better tonight than we were against
Eastlake."
Junior ROBIN APPLEBY led the Sultans with
11 rebounds, while Krismer handed
out 7 assists. HEATHER THOMAS canned a 3-pointer and dished off
6 assists.
Franey nailed a 3-pointer and pilfered 6 steals.
Santana's AMIE LEACH, a 6-foot-1 junior,
swept 8 rebounds off the glass to
go along with her 6 points.
More good news for the Sultans is junior
MARGEAUX BASS will be in the lineup
Friday (Dec. 6) when Santana hosts Rancho Buena Vista at 7:30
p.m. Bass has
been sidelined all season with a knee injury.
Other Santana scoring: Thomas 5, Appleby 4, Carlee Ihm 2.

EL CAJON - Dedicating their season opener
to the newborn daughter of coach
WALLEY YEAKLE and his wife NICOLE, the Grossmont Foothillers registered
a
convincing 73-44 win over visiting Southwest El Centro Tuesday
night (Dec.
3). Baby STEPHANIE was born Monday, Dec. 2nd.
'"We had to win this one," said
sophomore point guard, JACLYN GOLDBARG,
"Coach's baby was a special way to start our season".
Jumping out to a 9-0 lead to begin the Grossmont
Tournament game, the
Foothillers (1-0) never trailed as they led 36-22 at the half.
Southwest battled back midway through the
third quarter, cutting the deficit
to 9 points before Grossmont went on a 24-7 run to end the contest.
MARISA MOHAN, East County's leading rebounder
at Helix last year, began her
quest for another crown by hauling down 16 boards to go with her
14 points.
Three-point specialist, LAURA FELICE hit on 5 of 8 from deep behind
the arc
and finished with 17 points.
Goldbarg, who was the top scoring freshman
in San Diego County last year, led
all scorer's with 25 points while adding 9 assists, 10 rebounds
and 5 steals.
She also hit two 3-pointers and 7 of 8 free throws.
HEATHER HEMINGWAY was another monster on
the boards collecting 15 while
scoring 7 points. SAMANTHA MOHAN, in her freshman debut, added
6 points and
4 steals.
Other Grossmont scoring: Lyndsay Felice 2, Annie Gonzalez 2.
WEST HILLS 57, MONTGOMERY 34 - JULIE STRICK enjoyed a big opening night for
West Hills as the Wolf Pack chewed up the Aztecs in a Grossmont
Tournament
game Tuesday night (Dec. 3) at Montgomery. The senior guard burned
the chords
for 24 points, hitting 9 of 16 shots from the floor and 5 of 6
free throws.
She converted one 3-point shot, made 6 steals and dished off 3
assists.
ERIN HOURIGAN led a balanced supporting cast with 10 points and 6 rebounds.
"Erin did a great job controlling the
post area on defense," West Hills coach
DAVE BURGESS said.
JORDAN RUSSO (8 points, 3 steals), AIME
CORDEIRO (7 points) and BETH TRONERUD
(7 points) also contributed to the victory.
"Russo gave us several extra possessions
with picking up loose balls,"
Burgess said. "And this was Aime's first varsity game. She
did a great job of
supplying defensive pressure and harassing their ball-handlers."
All the news wasn't good for West Hills.
Three-point shooting specialist
AMANDA BROWN hurt a knee in the second quarter. She did not continue
in this
game. Burgess said the knee will be evaluated today.
Other West Hills scoring: None.
MOUNT MIGUEL 60, ESCONDIDO 46 - The Matadors won their second Granite Hills
Classic contest in as many nights Tuesday (Dec. 3), but coach
ROBBIE SANDOVAL
wasn't overly pleased by his squad's performance.
"We aren't guarding anybody right now,"
sighed Sandoval, whose squad won't
have senior leader CHRISTINE FITZGERALD back in the lineup (from
a knee
injury) for two more weeks. "Playing back-to-back games didn't
help us."
C'mon, Robbie. Your team isn't at full strength
yet, and they are 2-0 coming
out of the gate.
GENEVIEVE COSTELLO led the Matadors' scoring
parade with 19 points, including
the team's only 3-pointer. KAYLA HENRY and IJAL BARNES dominated
inside,
scoring 14 and 11 points respectively. Barnes bagged 13 rebounds,
two more
than Henry. TERESA MELENDEZ handed out 5 assists, while Costello
logged 4
assists and made 4 steals.
Other Mount Miguel scoring: Jerica Williams
8, Natasha Edwards 4, Amanda
Beasley 2, Melendez 2.
Carlsbad 86, Helix 33 - No information reported.

SPRING VALLEY - The Mount Miguel Matadors
are expected to dribble deep into
the San Diego CIF playoff this season. But coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL
wasn't
pleased with his squad in Monday's (Dec. 2) opening night performance
in the
first round of the Granite Hills Classic.
Of course, this was not the full Mount Miguel
team that will challenge for
the SDCIF Division II title, as senior guard CHRISTINE FITZGERALD,
the 2001
All-Grossmont South League Player of the Year who is recovering
from knee
surgery, will miss the first five games of the season.
In Fitzgerald's absence, sophomore GENEVIEVE
COSTELLO scored 15 points and
recorded 5 steals while freshman JERICA WILLIAMS tossed in 14
points as the
Matadors edged visiting La Costa Canyon 50-44.
Mount Miguel marched to a 32-24 halftime
lead and then held on for the
victory.
"Our defense was better in the third
quarter," Sandoval said. "But towards
the end of the fourth quarter we ran out of gas. We made a lot
of mental
mistakes. It was a disappointing game for us - we should have
beat them (LCC)
by 15 points."
That doesn't seem likely given that LCC gained a 40-17 rebounding advantage.
Other Mount Miguel scoring: Kayla Henry
9, Ijal Barnes 6, Amanda Beasley 2,
Teresa Melendez 2, Natasha Edwards 2.
GRANITE HILLS 66, HILLTOP 33 - JOELLE BUNNELL is picking up where she left
off as East County's leading scorer last year. The 5-foot-7 senior
scored 16
of her game-high 23 points in the first quarter as the Eagles
sprinted to a
22-8 lead en route to a season-opening victory at Hilltop.
Bunnell, who hit 4 of her 5 three-pointers
during the opening eight minutes,
could have enjoyed a record-breaking night had Granite Hills coach
JAY
ROWLETT elected to "run up the score" against a hapless
opponent. Rowlett, of
course, chose to allow all of his players quality playing time.
"(Hilltop) couldn't handle our press,"
said Rowlett, whose squad forced 28
Lancer turnovers.
Bunnell generated 8 steals, while JEANNIE
CASE collected 5 and AMY HOYT and
AMANADA McCURDY pilfered 3 apiece.
Granite Hills' JENNIFER WHITMOYER led the
Eagles' supporting cast, canning 18
points, including a pair of treys.
BRENDA NAJOR led the Eagles' board brigade
with 10 rebounds. Bunnell plucked
7 caroms off the glass.
Other Granite Hills scoring: Meagan St.
John 6, Najor 6, Hoyt 4, Case 3,
McCurdy 2, Jenny Holden 2, Allison Hack 2.
OCEANSIDE 56, CHRISTIAN 48 - To think that a team can be counted out before
playing its first game is absurd. But not many folks are expecting
the
Patriots to pack much punch this season.
Monday's (Dec. 2) Granite Hills Classic
opener at Oceanside involving TIM
JOLLETT's Patriots was supposed to be a blow-out victory for the
North County
Pirates. That didn't prove to be the case.
"This was supposed to be our toughest
game in the tournament, and we had them
on the ropes," said Jollett, whose Patriots stormed to a
16-12 first quarter
lead. "I think they were shocked that we could do what we
did."
RACHEL EDELEN, who was a role player a year
ago, took the lead for the
Patriots at Oceanside, pouring in a team-best 19 points. But the
limited
availability of senior MAGGIE McGILL, who was suffering from muscle
cramps,
hampered the Patriots.
"We basically didn't have Maggie for the middle two quarters," Jollett said.
McGill managed to score 12 points and JAMIE
RAY added 11 for the Patriots,
who were outscored 44-30 over the final three quarters.
The Patriots host Mar Vista Thursday (Dec.
5) in a Granite Hills Classic game
that features a time change. Instead of tipping off at 7:30, the
ball goes up
at 4:30 p.m.
Other Christian scoring: Grace Garcia 3,
Holly Erickson 2, Heather Meier 1.

CORONADO - The short-handed Monte Vista
Monarchs were closing in on their
first victory under new coach SANDY WRIGHT in Saturday's (Nov.
30) second
round of the Coronado Thanksgiving Day Tournament as they led
Brawley 24-23

SAN DIEGO - The best news for Santana in Wednesday's (Nov. 27) season-opening 61-44 Tip-off Classic victory over Eastlake occurred away from the court. Sultans coach WADE VICKERY was informed that junior forward MARGEAUX BASS, once feared lost for the season with a knee injury, will return to the lineup as soon as two weeks.
"That certainly was the highlight of the night as far as I'm concerned," Vickery said "The results of the MRI were favorable in that she won't have to have surgery."
The 5-foot-7 Bass is one of three starters returning from last year's 28-3 team.
Meanwhile, Santana freshman JORDAN FRANEY
poured in 21 points and hauled down 12 rebounds in her high school
debut at the University of San Diego's Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Franey's totals included 10-for-11 shooting from the free-throw
line.
The Sultans' JAIME RANSOM scored all of
her 19 points in the second half
after missing the majority of the opening two quarters on the
bench in foul
trouble.
"She probably played a total of five
minutes in the first half," Vickery
said. "But she picked us up and played very well in the second
half." Ransom
sank 8 of 13 shots (one of them a 3-pointer) from the floor and
hit 2 of 3
free throws. The 5-foot-9 senior grabbed 10 rebounds.
AMANDA KRISMER collected 10 points, 6 rebounds,
7 assists and made 7
deflections for the Sultans, while COURTNEY ASH nabbed 12 rebounds
and
notched 4 steals.
Other Santana scoring: Amie Leach 4, Ash
4, Maria DeBarrows 2, Gabby
Passentino 1.

CORONADO - It was a less than auspicious
beginning for the Monte Vista
Monarchs, as they dropped their first two games of the season
in the Coronado
Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday (Nov. 29).
The youthful Monarchs were smothered 78-32
by Serra in game one, and then
fell to Marian Catholic 45-33 later in the day.
Returning junior guard SHALIA BOHANNON,
led the Monarchs (0-1) in game one,
scoring a team high 10 points - 6 coming in the third quarter
- and was
credited with 3 steals. TASHANA HOWELL added 5 points, including
the only
3-point shot of the game, and made 4 assists. TANISHA SHELLEY
chipped in
with 6 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals.
Shelly, Howell and Bohannon scored 7 points
apiece in the loss to Marian.
Shelley netted 5 of 6 free throws, and Howell knocked down a 3-ball.
Other Monte Vista scoring:
Game 1: Vorman 5, Craft 2, Peckenpaugh 2, Benyard 2.
Game 2: Bohannon 4, Craft 2, Peckenpaugh 2, Benyard 1.

SANTEE - Although San Diego County's winningest
girls basketball coach, WADE
VICKERY of Santana, eats and breathes basketball 24/7/365, he
readily admits
that starting the regular season on Wednesday (Nov. 27) is a bit
challenging.
The Sultans are ticketed to play perennial power Eastlake High
in the first
game of Wednesday's (Nov. 27) Tip-off Classic at USD's Jenny Craig
Pavillion
at 4 p.m.
While the Sultans are once again rated among
the county's elite - three
players are slated to return from last year - all is not well.
Returning
junior starting forward MARGEAUX BASS could well miss the entire
season with
a knee injury.
"She got hurt during a field hockey
game," said Vickery, whose club finished
28-3 a year ago.
Bass' status is pending for the season.
The 5-foot-7 junior, who is
scheduled for an MRI in the near future, can't be included in
the Sultans'
plans.
Santana does have two other returning standout
senior players in JAIME RANSOM
(19.7 ppg, 6.1 rpg) and AMANDA KRISMER (14.2 ppg, 5.8 rpg). Freshman
JORDAN
FRANEY is a blossoming superstar, while returning junior COURTNEY
ASH and
HEATHER THOMAS are solid additions to the starting five.
"Even though it's a little bit early,
this is a really neat deal," Vickery
said. "We're proud to be part of it (Tipoff Classic)."
