HOLLYWOOD (8-25-13) "The Dave & Jeff
Show," featuring Dave Palet and Jeff Dotseth, made
its return to the sports radio airwaves Saturday (Aug.
24) as part of the weekend schedule on Fox Sports Radio.
Dave & Jeff, which took over the morning drive
slot (6-10 a.m.) at San Diego based Xtra Sports 1090
AM, but last a mere 11 months until a controversial
parting in December 2011 -- various media reports claimed
Palet was fired, so Dotseth supported his friend by
immediately resigning -- despite raising station ratings
up some 33 percent to an all-time high.
They now move from a local format to a national forum.
"It's great to be on a network like Fox, but it's
only part-time for now," noted Palet. "When
we get a full-time deal done, we will let everyone know."
Over the past 18 months, Palet, a San Diego State graduate,
has been deeply involved in youth baseball, including
the successful California Bears, which features players
from the East County and South Bay.
Dotseth is a former host of San Diego Chargers post-game
radio and has been heard nationally on ESPN Radio. He
recently became a judge for boxing and mixed martial
arts events.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE MEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Following marathon opener, Griffins fall
in state final to GWC
© East County Sports.com
LONG BEACH (4-21-13) Grossmont and Golden
West college shared quite a few achievements in
the 2013 men's volleyball season, but only one
could be crowned CCCAA state champions. That accolade
went to the Golden West Rustlers following a 3-game
sweep in Saturday's (Apr. 20) title match.
Golden West downed the Griffins in a pair of
overtime games, going on to a 31-29, 26-24, 25-17
victory at Long Beach City Collehe's historic
Hall of Champions Gymnasium.
The Ruslters' Matt Hilling, the state tournament
most valuable player, provided most of the offense
for Golden West, collecting 18 of the Rustlers
39 kills on the night.
Matt was huge for us tonight, said
first-year Golden West head coach Kasey Harwell.
He was involved in every point tonight and
didnt take a break. I was impressed to see
he played with so much composure.
Hilling came up with the big plays when the Rustlers
needed it most. In the opening set, the Rustlers
appeared to be on their way to a hard-fought win.
A Hilling kill gave GWC a 23-20 lead and the Rustlers
had set point at 24-22 after a kill by Jose Ulloa.
But a Grossmont kill by Jorge Cabrera and a block
by Chet Radish tied the set at 24-24. Hilling
broke the tie with another kill before a GWC service
error tied the score again at 25. Three points
later, Tyler Kulikowskis error gave Grossmont
its first lead of the set at 27-26.
Hilling once again came through with a big kill
to tie up the score. The teams exchanged points
before Hilling smashed his eighth kill of the
set to put the Rustlers up 30-29. Cabreras
hitting error ended the set and gave the Rustlers
the opening win.
The second set was another closely contested
battle that saw 11 ties. This time, Grossmont
led early before Golden West rallied late to steal
it.
The Griffins were up 13-9 after a block by Frank
Herrera before Golden West eventually tied things
up at 15. The lead would change four times down
the stretch. Grossmont was up 24-23 after a Golden
West rotation error. But a pair of Griffin errors
and a kill by Phil Lopez gave the Rustlers the
win.
Set 3 started close but a 7-3 run by Golden West
turned a narrow 10-9 lead to a huge 17-12 advantage
that the Griffins couldnt recover from.
A big block by Kulikowski and Ulloa gave Golden
West match point before a Grossmont hitting error
set off the Rustler celebration.
The state championship for Golden West was the
sixth in school history and first since their
impressive run of five consecutive state titles
that ended in 1999.
Saturdays match marked the third time the
Pacific Coast Athletic Conference foes met this
season. Golden West had beaten Grossmont 3-1 at
home early in the season before the Griffins evened
up the series against the Rustlers with a 3-0
win at home.
Playing them twice during the season really
helped with our preparation for tonights
match, said Harwell. But it came down
to my players knowing how to stop them.
Lopez and Kulikowski posted six kills each for
the Rustlers while DJ Koenen had six blocks. Setter
Luke Pope paced the Rustlers with 32 assists.
Golden West capped its championship season with
a 17-4 overall record.
Everybody stepped up tonight, said
Harwell. Luke set his best match of the
season tonight. And we did this without our starting
right side Weston Carico. Its just a testament
to our team that they were able to adjust.

Volleyball Conference State Championship
last Friday (Apr. 19) at home. IVC (3-0)

For Grossmont (13-7), Cabrera led with 14 kills.
Davis Anderson had 10 kills and five digs, while
Garrett Adelman had 32 assists. The Griffins hit
just .093 for the match and committed 30 hitting
errors. Grossmont made its second state championship
final appearance in three years, dropping the 2011
final to Irvine Valley in five sets.

LONG BEACH (4-19-14) Grossmont College
will play in its second CCCAA state men's volleyball
championship match in three years after the top-seeded
Griffins eliminated tournament host Long Beach
City College, 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22),
in Thursday's (Apr. 18), in the state semifinals
at historic Hall of Champions Gymnasium. BOXSCORE
Grossmont (13-6 overall) will meet Golden West,
the school they shared the Pacific Coast Athletic
Conference crown with this season. The Rustlers
(16-4) upset second-seeded L.A. Pierce, also 3-1
(22-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-21), to gain another
berth in the final.
Golden West has captured more state titles than
any other school. Grossmont seeks its first state
title; they fell in the 2011 finale to Irvine
Valley, 3-2.
For the Griffins, sophomore outside hitter Jorge
Cabrera had a match-high 23 kills with an impressive
.404 spiking percentage, along with eight digs
to frustrate Long Beach's Vikings (15-4).
Freshman outside hitter Davis Anderson also had
a big night at the net for the Griffins, collecting
12 kills on his way to a .409 hitting percentage.
Freshman outside hitter Chet Radish also posted
12 kills with eight digs, and four blocks.

LONG BEACH (4-16-14) Grossmont College
seeks its first state men's volleyball championship
when the Griffins enter this week's championships,
to be hosted by Long Beach City College . The
event is set for this Thursday and Saturday (Apr.
18 & 20), at historic Hall of Champions Gymnasium.
The Griffins (12-6) are the top seeds in the
6-team event after taking a total sets tiebreaker
over Golden West College to claim the Pacific
Coast Athletic Conference crown. Thus, the team
is not only an automatic qualifier into Thursday's
semifinals, there are also the top seeds.
Seeded second is Western State Conference titlist
L.A. Pierce. The Brahmas are in the playoffs for
the first time since 2007 after winning four straight
state titles (2000-03) at the turn of the century.
Golden West is seeded third, followed by the host
Vikings at No.4.
The closest Grossmont came to capturing state
was just two years ago, but fell to Irvine Valley,
3-0, in the final year of leadership under legendary
head coach FRED FEATHERSTONE. The assistant coach
that season was former Griffins standout TRAVIS
LEE, who is now in his second season leading Grossmont.

POWAY (2-8-13) For the first time, the three
high school baseball umpires associations in the CIF
San Diego Section are training together. That involves
close to 150 arbiters from the San Diego County, Pacific
(North County) and Imperial Valley associations.
On Sunday (Feb. 10), the umpires will be working with
Major League Baseball umpires Mike Winters, Brian Runge
and Mike Cascioppo at Poway High School from 9 a.m.
to 3 p.m.
This is a pretty big deal to get all these people
together and to have three MLB guys as instructors,
said Ignacio Nacho Torres, president of
the San Diego County Umpires Association. The
three associations have been training together for five
weeks, so were not looking for new umpires this
season.
The purpose is we want the public to know we
dont just walk out there the first day of the
season and start calling balls and strikes. We work
on perfecting our craft long before the high school
season starts (Mar. 6). Were trying to bring our
associations into the 21st century and we believe this
is a good way to do it.
This is an onfield clinic. There is no charge
and we encourage the public to come out and watch."

The future in mountain biking
© East County Sports.com
LAKESIDE (1-11-13) When the time comes
for longtime El Capitan High assistant baseball
coach JOE UNDEN to hang up his spikes, another
sports career will be waiting.
Unden, who served nearly 30 years for head coach
STEVE VICKERY until his retirement last June,
is fast becoming known in the sport of mountain
biking, both as a participant and as the owner/operator
of Mountain
Bike Diaries, a website dedicated to the growing
individual sport.
I was throwing batting practice and I twisted
my knee, recalled Unden. I needed
to have some torn cartilage taken out.
Following a minor knee operation in 2005, Unden
was given a pair of rehabilitation options, but
the first one proved to be unpleasant.
I was told I could swim or bike,
noted the math instructor. So I did a little
bit of swimming, but I thought it was so boring
only seeing water for an hour and a half.
So my daughter suggested riding a bike.
She didnt have a real mountain bike, but
it was close, so I started riding on a fire road
near where I live in Eucalyptus Hills.
Seven years later, Unden's Mountain Bike Diaries
offers reflections on his biking trips throughout
the West, interviews, maps, photos/videos and
itineraries, and a place for interaction among
biking enthusiasts.
Among all of these sites, however, one scenic
stands far above the rest.
Nothing compares to Crested Butte in Colorado
simply incredible, Unden added. You
start at around 11,000 feet, then ride through
fields of flowers its the wildflower
capital of Colorado."
Youth baseball club opened by Perdue
© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (1-9-13) Veteran East County baseball
coach STEVE PERDUE, who guided Valhalla High to
its first league and CIF championships, announced
the start of a new youth club program.
East County Select is currently seeking players
for both a 10-and-under ballclub, and a 15-and-under
team, with the older squad already scheduled to
play in a friendship series in Osaka, Japan, this
August.
"The unique thing about East County Select
is our focus is on instruction," said Perdue.
"This is not a win-at-all-cost program. We
want to help every kid who enters our program
become better players, better people, and improve
each and every one of their self-esteem."
Perdue guided the Norsemen to the only three
Grossmont League titles (2003-05) in school history,
then the program's lone San Diego Section crown
in 2006, downing Cathedral Catholic, 4-1, for
the Division III title.
He later took over a new program at Foothills
Christian, leading the Knights to a league runner-up
finish in his first season.

Holiday fire prevention tips
for smokers
Smoking materials (i.e., cigars, cigarettes,
pipes, etc.) are the leading cause of fire deaths
in the United States.
If you smoke, smoke outside.
Use deep, wide ashtrays
on a sturdy table, avoiding flammable holiday
trees and decorations.
Before you throw out butts
and ashes, make sure they are out, and dousing
in water or sand is the best way to do that.
Check under furniture
cushions and in other places people smoke for
cigarette butts that may have fallen out of sight.
Never smoke in a home
where oxygen is being used.
If you smoke, choose fire-safe
cigarettes. They are less likely to cause fires.
To prevent a deadly cigarette
fire, you have to be alert. You won?t be if you
are sleepy, have been drinking, or have taken
medicine or other drugs.
Keep matches and lighters
up high, out of children's sight and reach.
Careful when you smoke
and drink alcoholic beverages - you're more likely
to fall asleep when sitting on the couch or laying
in bed.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE WORKING
SMOKE ALARMS IN YOUR HOME, IN THE LIVING ROOM
AND IN THE HALLWAY OUTSIDE YOUR BEDROOMS.

The Christian volleyball team
are aiding teammate Brittany Wnek
by hosting a Holiday Craft Fair fundraiser this
Saturday, noon-4 p.m.

A Bright Day for Brittany
By Nick Pellegrino
EL CAJON (12-6-12) Just like all of her classmates,
Brittany Wnek grew up going to school, participating
in a variety of school activities and sports -- just
being an everyday kid.
Then one day she found her life consumed with hospital
appointments, CT scans and MRI's, chemo, radiation and
many surgeries.
"Brittany was playing volleyball, basketball and
soccer with her friends," said Barb Wnek, Brittany's
mother and longtime volleyball coach formerly at Point
Loma Nazarene University for 17 years. "Then everyone
in the community found out one way or another that Brittany
had a serious illness."
Along with regular treatment at Rady Childrens
Hospital and the UCSD Moores Cancer Center, the family
has traveled to Texas and New York seeking solutions
for her rare disease called mastocytosis, a disease
characterized by the presence of too many mast cells
in various organs and tissues.
In Brittany's case, the Mast cells collect and form
tumors which have become destructive to bones in her
skull, spine and pelvis. Originally,Brittany was diagnosed
when she was just 12, after she underwent a CT scan
that revealed a tumor behind her left ear. She recently
spent more than two months in the hospital undergoing
major surgeries and some setbacks, but Brittany was
finally able to go home in time to celebrate her 17th
birthday.
"We have so many people praying Brittany through
these ongoing battles-- we believe in the power of prayer.
We are thankful," add the mother It has been
a challenging journey but the family continues to seek
answers, and pursue treatment.
With Brittany unable to start school this past fall,
her athletic career was put on hold at Christian High
School. Gaby Grabowski, one of her teammates, spoke
with her parents because she wanted to do something
special for Britt, and the Grabowski family went into
action.
John and Gabriela Grabowski, owners of Aztecas Design,
are hosting a Holiday Craft Fair at their business located
at 435 W. Bradley Ave., in El Cajon from 12 to 4 p.m.,
on Sat., Dec. 8. Aztecas Design imports Mexican hand-blown
glassware products nationally for the restaurant industry. The
company is offering exclusive, custom-crafted glassware,
including pitchers drinking glasses, margarita glasses,
Christmas ornaments and more decorative items, for a
minimum donation.
At the fair, 100% of the purchase price on all sales
from Aztecs Design will go to benefit Brittany Wnek. The

Webb, former CIFSDS commissioner, life ends as winner
© East County Sports.com
IMPERIAL BEACH (8-29-12) Former San Diego CIF
Commissioner Kendall Webb, who held the position from
1976 to 1996, died Sunday (Aug. 26) just minutes after
winning his age division in the Surf Town race.
According to his wife, Dixie, Webb had just completed
the 1-mile run, 8-mile bike and 3-mile run duathlon
when he reached for a fence 10 feet past the finish
line to steady himself before collapsing.
Webb was pronounced dead at Chula Vista Scripps Hospital
about 30 minutes following the race.
Webb, unquestionably one of the more likeable commissioners
in the San Diego Sections 52-year history, had
turned 80 on Aug. 20 and celebrated that milestone with
his daughter on a hike up a 10,000-foot mountain near
Yosemite.
Webb served as an assistant commissioner of the CIF
before being named the top administrator for high school
sports in the San Diego Section. He was the second commissioner
of the San Diego Section, which was formed in 1960.
During his tenure as commissioner in San Diego , Webb
helped introduce numerous changes into the local sports
scene, including adding dozens of girls sports after
the passage of Title IX in the early 1970s. He was also
instrumental in setting eligibility policies and making
tough decisions in several high-profile cases, including
a fifth year of eligibility for La Jolla Country Days
Rashaan Salaam, who would go on to win the 1994 Heisman
Trophy for Colorado.
A public memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m.
Sept. 8 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints, 10985 Camino Playa Carmel in Tierrasanta.
Long eliminated from Olympics in BMX quarterfinals
© East County Sports.com
LONDON (8-10-12) The final competitive moment of
the London Olympics for Lakeside's NIC LONG turned out
to be both a victory and a defeat. RESULTS
On Thursday (Aug. 9), Long captured his final heat
in the BMX quarterfinals at the Games, but a third-place
finish by Rogert Rinderknecht of Switzerland was good
enough to nip Long by one point to earn the final berth
into the semifinals.
Rinderknecht tied with David Herman of Henderson, Nev.,
with 18 points, while Long finished with 19 points to
miss Friday's final day of BMX competition. For Herman,
advancing was surprising after he finished last in the
first of five heats in the quarterfinals after finishing
in the back of a crash which wiped out all riders except
the lead.
Herman joins fellow American rider Conner Fields of
Plano, Texas, the top-seed after dominating his heats
with three straight victories without a loss, as did
Raymon van der Biezen of The Netherlands.

Surge claim WFA football crown
© East County Sports.com
PITTSBURGH (8-5-12) The roots of full-contact
women's football in the county date back to the
San Diego Lobos from the mid-1970s. There have
been others ballcluns since then, but until now,
none could be called national champions.
Partaking in the first-ever Women's Football
Alliance contest in a National Football League
stadium, the East County based San Diego Surge
completed a perfect season after nipping the Chicago
Force, 40-36, in the WFA title game at Heinz Field.
FINAL
STATS
Holly Peterson returned the opening kickoff 82
yards for a San Diego touchdown, but Chicago bounced
back to claim a 36-27 advantage. However, the
Surge scored twice in the final 2:28, featuring
a 66-yard punt runback by Cassey Brick with 1:49
remaining.
San Diego (12-0) then staved Chicago's final
chance with a championship-clinching interception
by CILENA MOSLEY at the Surge 6-yard line with
18 seconds remaining before a crowd of more than
2,300 spectators.
Brick was named the most valubale player of the
final after the wide receiver also caught four
balls for 120 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
In all, Brick finished with four scores, also
rushing four times for 29 yards and a TD.
Surge quarterback Melissa Gallegos threw for 261
yards and three touchdowns, including an 88-yard
TD strike to JESSICA JAVELET, in the battle of
unbeaten ballclubs. Javelet also led the Surge
in total tackles on defense.
The Force finished at 11-1 overall.
The ballgame was broadcast on ESPN3 and hosted
by the Pittsburgh Passion, founded by co-owner
Franco Harris, the Hall of Fame Steelers running
back. The WFA is a nation-wide, 62-team league
of semipro, full-contact women's football teams.

Heartland Fire & Rescue
fire chief Rick Sitta

Sitta named new Fire Chief
for Heartland Fire & Rescue
© East County Sports.com
EL CAJOIN (8-7-12) The cities of El Cajon, La
Mesa and Lemon Grove, whose jointly managed fire departments
make up Heartland Fire & Rescue, have selected RICK
SITTA as its new fire chief. Sitta replaces Chief MIKE
SCOTT, who retired on July 27.
The city managers for the three cities, Douglas Williford
of El Cajon, Dave Witt of La Mesa, and Graham Mitchell
of Lemon Grove, made the announcement Tuesday (Aug.
7) after completing the recruitment process on Monday..
Sitta has served as Deputy Fire Chief of Heartland
Fire & Rescue since January 2010. Between 2003 and
his elevation to Deputy Fire Chief, he served as a Fire
Division Chief in both El Cajon and in Coronado.
Sitta has been heavily involved in fire operations
throughout the region, including Command Staff positions
on Cal Fire Type I Incident Management teams for major
wildland responses throughout the State of California,
and an active participant in the implementation of operational
policies being shared by fire agencies Countywide. Sitta
was honored with a commendation for bravery during the
devastating 2003 Cedar Fire in San Diego County.
The City Managers confirmed that Sitta's selection
will be effective today. He will be paid $134,950 annually.
As the new Heartland Fire Chief, Sitta will oversee
operations of the cooperative management services for
the three fire and rescue departments in El Cajon, La
Mesa and Lemon Grove. The three cities merged their
fire services on January 1, 2010, after the City Councils
for those cities approved a Joint Powers Agreement that
created a single management team to oversee the day-to-day
operations for the three fire departments.
"The Joint Powers Agreement which formed Heartland
Fire & Rescue has been a major success", said
Douglas Williford, "and Rick has played a significant
role in that success. We were fortunate to have such
a highly qualified individual already within the organization
and we look forward to working with Chief Sitta as he
assumes his new duties."

Heartland fire chief Scott
retires after 28-year career
© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (7-30-12) MIKE SCOTT, who has served
as fire chief for Heartland Fire & Rescue, retired
Sunday (July 29) following a 28-year career.
Starting as a firefighter in 1984, Scott continued
his rise through the ranks until becoming the El Cajon
fire chief in 2005, then the Heartland chief in 2009,
overseeing a department which covers the cities of El
Cajon, La Mesa and Lemon Grove.
Scott began his career with the department as a firefighter/paramedic.
then was one of the original California Task Force-8
Urban Search and Rescue team members in our state.
He started as a Technical Rescue Specialist and deployed
to the Northridge Earthquake in 1994 and to the Atlanta
Olympics bombing in 1996. Mike transferred to the Canine
Division where he was partnered with Billy,
a devoted Black Labrador, in November of 1998. Mike
and Billy became the second Canine Search team in the
county ever to be certified by FEMA. They served several
local missions before being deployed to Ground Zero
shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York.
Later, the city managers of El Cajon, La Mesa and Lemon
Grove announced the appointment of Scott as chief to
oversee the operations of the cooperative management
services for the three departments when they merged
on Jan. 1, 2010. The Joint Powers Agreement created
a single management team to oversee the day-to-day operations
of the three fire departments. These efforts were recognized
by the Taxpayers Association when Scott accepted the
Golden Watchdog in May of 2010.
Chief Scott said following his announcement, "I
have been deeply honored to serve as the fire chief
for the Heartland Fire & Rescue Joint Powers Agreement.
We have built a solid organizational foundation and
I am confident that this effort will continue to succeed.
It has been my privilege to serve the community, the
elected officials, the city managers and the dedicated
employees of our fire department."
El Cajon city manager Douglas Williford said, Mike
has been an exemplary Fire Chief and deserves a lot
of the credit for the success of the consolidation of
the three separate City fire departments into Heartland
Fire & Rescue. I will miss him personally and the
entire East County Heartland region will miss him collectively.
He is leaving very big shoes to fill for his successor.

Surge again head into WFA's Final Four
© East County Sports.com
LA MESA (7-8-12) The undefeated San Diego
Surge semipro women's football team will again
play for the American Conference championship
of the Women's Football Alliance after whipping
the Bay Area (San Pablo) Bandits, 42-7, Saturday
(July 7) at Helix High's Benton Hart Stadium.
The victory extends a streak by the Surge (10-0)
to 28 consecutive quarters without the defense
allowing a touchdown. Meanwhile, defensive back
ASHLEY MOODY registered an interception for a
score the ballclub's sixth this season
racing 85 yards with her second theft of
the ballgame.
"On the pick, I just stayed with my man
and the quarterback overthrew it and I came up
with it," said Moody, a former basketball
player at Cal Poly Pomona, who finished with 101
return yards. "It was just hard work on every
one's part because we want to be number one."
Moody and SHEREE D, BUSH proved to be shutdown
corners for the Surge, which held the Bandits
to just 148 yards in total offense (23 in the
second half).
"This team is a combination of several teams,
including some former members of the L.A. Amazons
and the (San Francisco) Quakes," added Moody.
"So it's like an all-star team."
The Surge will again host the Dallas Diamonds
for the Western Conference crown, the same team
they defeated in last season's conference finale.
The contest is slated for July 21, starting at
5:30 p.m. from, West Hills High's Wolf Pack Stadium.
Bay Area, based out of Contra Costa College,
entered the ballgame with a perfect record except
for a single setback all season, a 57-0 pasting
by the Surge back on May 19. This ballgame pretty
much mirrored the first, except for a 36-yard
interception runback by linebacker Latrice Johnson
to make it 7-all six minutes into the first period
before San Diego closed with 35 unanswered points.
Following the opening kickoff, the Surge needed
just one play to score when CASSEY BRICK broke
through the right side and galloped 54 yards for
a touchdown just 15 seconds into the contest.
Brick finished with 142 rushing yards, while Surge
quarterback Me;ossa Gallegos registered three
of the team's four TD passes in a balanced attack.
After the Bandits got even on the scoreboard,
Gallegos re-assumed control on the very next drive,
completing all four of her passes, capped by a
5-yard TD strike to CARMEN CRUZ.
Moody's "pick six" made it 21-7 at
the half, then Gallegos connected with HOLLY PETERSON
(8 yards) and KAYCEE CLARK (19) for a 35-7 cushion.
Reserve quarterback AISHA NICOLE RUFFO capped
the scoring with a 34-yard TD pass to Cruz.
Meanwhile, SABRINA WILSON ranked among the Surge
tackling leaders, TARRAH PHILPOTT and CILENA TANYA
MOSLEY registered sacks, while linebacker MICHELLE
STARKS played "bandit" on Bandits running
back LaSTAR BROWN, limiting the former Oklahoma
City Univ. basketball standout to a mere 19 yards
on 22 carries.
The San Diego-Dallas winner will meet the National
Conference champion at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh
on Aug. 4 (ESPN3, ESPN-W and WatchESPN.com).

Lakeside's Long gains berth
to U.S. Olympic BMX team
By Nick Pellegrino
© East County Sports.com
CHULA VISTA (6-16-12) The Olympic dream
is alive and well for former El Capitan High student
NIC LONG.
Long, 22, a product of BMX racing at Cactus County
Park in Lakeside, was awarded the discretionary
pick by USA Cycling and the U.S. Olympic Committee
to fill out the American roster of three men and
two women.
The announcement came Saturday (June 16) night
at the BMX Hall of Fame banquet at the U.S. Olympic
Training Center, just hours after Long was knocked
out in the semifinals of the U.S. Trails held
over a replica course to be used at the London
Games.
David Herman (Wheat Ridge, Colo.) already qualified
by leading USA Cycling's power rankings, just
recently taking over the lead when season-long
leader Connor Fields (Henderson, Nev.) had a disappointing
finish at last month's world championships.
Fields bounced back to capture Saturday's trials,
leaving the committee to select from two obvious
choices for the third and final berth in the U.S.
men's team: defending Olympic silver medalist
Mike Day (Santa Clarita), or Corben Sharrah (Tucson,
Ariz.), who captured two of the three motos (heats)
leading to the main event.
However, the committee went off the board with
the selection of Long, who finished fifth among
the elite group of eight finalists invited to
the trials. However, Long is third in the season
points standings, which swayed the committee.
For the USA women, Arielle Martin (Spanaway, Wash.)
earned the automatic nod by leading the power
rankings. Alise Post (St. Cloud, Minn.) joined
her on the Olympic team as the discretionary selection.
The event is set to be televised on the NBC Sports
Network on Sat., June 23, from 6-7:30 p.m. ET.

College coach has resigned from the Hawks athletic program

selected to train the USA High Performance teams in
So Cal each of the last four years. We are looking forward
to another exciting season of volleyball with Todd on
the sidelines.

He was 82.

football coach who had been involved in
the Vaqueros football program off and on
for more than four decades.
Coach Till was well known and well
liked throughout the El Capitan community,
said current Vaqueros head football coach

and still taught and coached this year.
When Joe passed he was doing what
he loved, and that was swimming.

READERS COMMENTS...
I played football for coach Till in 1978. We went
undefeated. We played nine games. Our score for
all the games were 252 points scored and 6 points
scored against us. He was the best coach I ever
had. I think our record still stands today. He was
hard on us and that made the man I an today. He
loved Jesus too. He would hit you in the helmet
with his fist for not doing your job right. Then
he would pray to keep us all safe during practice
and before every game. God is now saying well done,
good and faithful servant. Coach Till, until we
me again! If you could send this to his family,
I wanted to let them know He was a good man. He
was dedicated to all the young men who played for
him. He touch the lives of so many people and will
be dearly missed.
