PREP SUMMER BASKETBALL Vaqueros go 5-1 in tough 3A DivisionSpecial to East County Sports.com The largest high school basketball tournament in the nation is a great place to measure one's team for the coming season. Using the annual San Diego Classic as a barometer, it appears that East County girls' basketball should a sight to see during the 2003-2004 season. El Capitan, Mount Miguel, and Grossmont played in the 3A Division, the toughest division in the tourney, consisting of 120 teams. Santana, Granite Hills, Steele Canyon, Monte Vista, and Christian played in the 128-team 2A Division. The 60-team Late Division included West Hills, Valhalla, and Helix. A total of 364 teams at six different venues in San Diego competed. This year the San Diego East County was very well represented in the Classic, entering 15 teams. In the 3A Division, El Capitan showed extremely
well defeating La Center (31-28), Ayala (46-30), and The Bishop's
of San Diego (35-34). The Lady Vaqueros controlled the tempo
and executed their press offense effectively against Diamond
Ranch (30-22) and Central Catholic (34-29). The only defeat El
Cap suffered was a one-point heartbreaking double overtime loss
to J.W. North (47-46), which finished second overall in A 5-and-1 record in the Classic is quite the achievement. El Cap was led by its dominate post players HEATHER MOLZEN and ALLISON DUFFY, and the Vaquero perimeter players did a fine job in breaking all the various press defenses they faced. El Capitan is the East County team to beat in the upcoming season. Also representing the East County in the 3A Division, the Mount Miguel Matadors played very well in the Classic with a 4-2 mark. They beat South Torrance 55-35 and Chaminade 26-25 before losing to powerful John Muir 35-24 and Mira Costa 29-20. Coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL's Lady Matadors bounced back to beat Harvard Westlake 30-29 and Ocean View 31-20. Sandoval was very pleased with the way his team played. GENEVIEVE COSTELLO, KAYLA HENRY, and JERICA WILLIAMS all played well for the Lady Matadors this summer. Coach WALLEY YEAKLE was just as upbeat
about the performance of his Grossmont Hillers, going 3-2 in
the tournament. They lost to Troy (47-12), who later lost in
the 3A semifinals to J.W. North. The Foothillers also beat Redondo
Union The 2A Division participants were lead
by the Lady Sultans of Santana (5-2), finishing fourth in the
2A Division; this is the highest Santana has In the first round of Pool 1 play, Saint Patrick's-Saint Vincent's were thought to be too much for Santana to handle, but the Sultans held their poise in crunch time and defeated Saint Patrick's 33-29. Being the underdog spoiler was a role the
lady Sultans continued against Sahuaro, winning 29-26. It was
not until Sunday when Santana's run would end, facing two The Sultans were led by senior guards MARGEAUX BASS and COURTNEY ASH, sophomore JORDAN FRANEY, and freshman SHAE BASS, yet all of the Sultans have to be commended for their fourth place finish in Division 2A. With a 3-2 record, another Division 2A team who played well in the Classic was Granite Hills. Lady Eagles easily beat Tesoro (50-26) and Centennial (22-9) in pool play, yet lost to a highly skilled Canyon team (53-39). After winning against Pennisula (32-30), Granite Hills lost to a talented, organized team from Valley Christian. (21-15). The Lady Eagles played well against their final opponent, Palm Springs, yet lost in crunch time because of two missed lay ups and a critical turnover; they lost 28-25. Coach JAY ROWLETT did not want to single out any of his players, saying, "It was a complete team effort; we win as a team and lose as a team." Look for the quick, scrappy, aggressive Granite Hills Eagles to do well in the upcoming season. The girls of Christian High School also played well and were quite competitive in the San Diego Classic this year despite ending up 2-3. The Patrtiots lost their opener to Mayfield (32-25) and lost to the perennially powerful Long Beach Poly Jackrabbits (37-34) and Edison (33-25), but won a close game against Shafter (30-29) and beat Monte Vista (30-24). As expected, RACHEL EDELEN carried Christian offensively, and HOLLY ERICKSON and HEATHER MEIER played tough for Coach TIM JOLLET, who said, "The tournament made us a better team." Coming off a good performance in its own tournament in the previous week, Steele Canyon (0-5) struggled in the Classic losing to Cibola (30-28), Wenatchee (46-30), Nogales (29-7), Shafter (27-10), and Pacifica (31-30). The Cougars' CASSIE GLOVER played great
deny defense, and RITA PIRINO was solid in the Monte Vista (1-4) also struggled in the tournament. The Lady Monarchs lost to Brea Olinda (40-32), Xavier Prep (40-30), Christian (30-24), and Wenatchee (32-31). The Monarchs did rout Hoover 41-12. TASHANA HOWELL played well throughout the tournament as did SHALIA BOHANNON and point guard ASHLEY MILLER, who was hot from the 3-point line. In the Late Division, West Hills (3-2) lost its opener to Los Alamitos (29-26) in the last ten seconds of the game, but came back to crush Bloomington 46-9 and beat Savanna 35-29. The Wolf Pack lost its fourth game to Torrance 35-26. In its fifth game, the Lady Wolf Pack played tough defense and played well on offense, defeating Banning. West Hills was led by point guard CARAMIE HUNTINGTON and swing player DANIELLE EDMONSON. Valhalla posted a 2-3 record in the Classic. Coach ROBERT WILSON'S Norsemen beat Prescott 42-35 and Tohono Oodam 42-23, but lost to San Gabriel 25-23, Brawley 31-27, and University High School of Los Angeles 43-22. The Lady Norsemen were led by 3-point specialist ANGEL BURCH and post player CHELSEA KITCHENS. Also in the Late Division, the Helix Highlanders finished 2-3. They lost to Centarus (33-24), University City (37-30), and Merced (46-40), but beat Calvary Chapel (37-18) and Seton Catholic (38-25). The Lady Highlanders were led by DIANA LEASAU and MEL LEASAU ASHLEY PENN, RAQUEL PRIMAS, and SHARIKA THOMPSON. Much improved this season, Helix will once
again be a team to be reckoned with.
