Valhalla, Granite Hills settle little,
but Norsemen get tie on road
East County Sports.com
EL CAJON - The first leg of the home-and-home series to determine
the Grossmont South League soccer championship finished in a
scoreless tie Thursday night (Jan. 29) at Valley Stadium. Yet,
it could be determined that - from an emotional standpoint -
the advantage went to Valhalla.
"It was a defensive battle between the big boys," noted
Norsemen defender JUSTIN ELWELL. "And with the confidence
that comes from playing good defense, we'll take the tie, but
it feels a bit like a win."
Perhaps. But both teams received equal value for their
efforts as they remained tied for the league lead at 3-0-1. Picking
up a point on the road, against the No.1-ranked Eagles (14-1-3),
served as a boost for the Norsemen. The teams seem destined to
remained tied for first until the next meeting, slated for Feb.
17, when a crowd greater than Tuesday's estimated gathering of
750 fans will be expected at Valhalla Stadium.
"We felt we had more scoring opportunities, especially with
what was going on with the big crowd and all," added Valhalla
striker CASEY LOCOCO. "We just need to exploit their weaknesses
next time and just keep the ball on the ground if we can't go
over the top of them."
Granite Hills held a slight edge in shots, 8-7, but the 8th-ranked
Norsemen (10-2-3) produced some slightly better chances. Included
was a chip by Lococo which was cleared off the line by the Eagles
defense after goalie THOMAS RYAN missed the ball after coming
off his line.
The play was eerily similar to the one that snapped Granite Hills'
San Diego CIF unbeaten streak of 66 matches last month against
St. Augustine. This time, the fullbacks sent the ball safely
away as Ryan scrambled back to the box.
"I have confidence in my defense and the back post was covered
in that situation," said Ryan. "I know I made the right
play in that situation, just like I did last time. We cleared
it, so nothing too bad happened."
Since allowing that late goal to Saints, Granite Hills has now
shutout seven consecutive opponents, with Ryan posting five complete
game victories and playing one-half of another during the stretch,
rolling to 442 straight minutes with allowing a goal.
"No goals. That's it," Ryan explained of the Eagles'
objective each outing since their first loss in three years.
"And as long as it stays that way, we think we can go to
Valhalla and take a game."
A year ago, the Eagles swept the three-game season series. They
haven't lost to Valhalla in the last six meetings, two of which
have ended in ties. Yet, the Norsemen have the home-field advantage
next time, and a boost of confidence to boot.
"It still won't be easy," added Lococo.
Granite Hills also missed on its share of scoring chances, including
a pair both located at almost exactly the same spot on the field.
SHAUN SILVA was taken down just outside the corner of the Norsemen
box, setting-up a 20-yard free kick. However, the free kick ALEX
YOSHINAGA launched sailed over the net in the 57th minute. Then
five minutes from the end, Norsemen defender BRIAN HUGHES was
booked for a hard tackle, but the restart play saw a SEAN PEPIN
blast also sail over the top.
Ryan finished with five saves, but was involved in several other
plays due to the Valhalla pressure.
"Sure, it wasn't a lot of saves, but I had a lot of touches,"
he added.
Meanwhile, Norsemen goalie TOMMY McCLAIN was tested on a Yoshinaga
drive in the opening minutes, otherwise, had an easier time and
collected three saves.
"We heard Valhalla say this was a victory - a positive outcome
for them," Granite Hills defender MATT SMITH said. "Well,
let them think what they want. They are big and tall and kicking
the ball in the air doesn't work against them.
"But we'll see them again. And we'll be ready."

Tie keeps Foothillers ahead of Wolf Pack
for now
Tue., Jan. 27
West Hills 1, Grossmont 1, tie -- Wolf Pack goalie Dan Hurley registered five of
his seven saves in the second half, including a point-blank shot
in the final 10 minutes, preserving a draw in a battle of Grossmont
North League leaders. The tie keeps the Foothillers one point
ahead of West Hills, however, not only does the Pack owns a game
in hand, but both teams could have fallen in the standings should
Santana have defeated El Cajon Valley to springboard above both
teams from third to first.
West Hills scored first when Joe McKeon took a pass from Brian
Dunne for a 1-0 lead. Grossmont countered late in the first half
when Paul Burdick redirected a corner kick by sophomore Alessandro
Maganuco into the corner of the net in the 39th minute.
"It's disappointing not getting the win, but Grossmont took
it to us in the second half," said Pack coach Russ Shubert.
"After we scored, then broke right back and got a shot to
bounce into the corner of the net."
Grossmont controlled the second half, producing four solid scoring
opportunities, but Hurley blocked two of the shots, while the
other pair sailed wide of the net.
Coronado 2, Christian 1 -- Unable to play for much of Tuesday's
(Jan. 27) Harbor League contest with a severe migraine headache,
Islanders junior Stuart Gallant finally gave the go-ahead to
return for the final 10 minutes of action.
"I started out okay, but after 10 minutes, I had another
migraine," said Gallant, who spent most of the following
hour laying down behind the bench with an icepack on his head.
"But when the blurred vision went away, I felt better and
told coach I could go back in."
Upon his return, Gallant was the difference in the game. The
junior midfielder stole the ball near midfield, dribbled 40 yards
unmarked down the left wing and released a sharp, 15-yarder for
a goal, giving Coronado the road victory over the luckless Patriots.
In a rough, physical contest which produced a half-dozen bookings,
Christian equally shared play with Coronado, despite playing
short-handed for the game's final 70 minutes following a red
card. But all the tiring Pats had to show for it was their fifth
consecutive league setback.
"We're down a man, yet still controlled the play until we
got tired at the end," said Christian coach Jeff Vigil.
"I can't ask any more from my players. I only ask they do
what they can do."
Immediately following the red card, Coronado's Phil Bond scored
for a 1-0 lead. However, playing 9-on-10, Christian pushed the
ball forward in the second half, when forward Jordan Wade was
pushed down from behind in the box. The resulting penalty kick
was converted by Blake Oliver.
Granite Hills 6, Steele Canyon 0 -- Forward Sean Pepin collected
a three-goal hat trick while goalie Thomas Ryan shared the shutout
with Brad Taconi, keeping the Eagles in first place in the Grossmont
South League.
Ryan extended his shutout streak to 282 consecutive minutes,
as Granite Hills posted its fourth straight shutout heading into
Thursday's 6:30 p.m. showdown with Valhalla at Valley Stadium.
The doubleheader starts with the girls contest at 4:30 p.m.,
and features the school's annual Opportunity Drawing raffle.
Kyle Hewitt added a pair of goals for the Eagles, while Saul
Solis added another.
Mon., Jan. 26
El Cajon Valley 1, Helix 1, tie -- Braves goalkeeper David Delgado registered eight
saves, helping El Cajon Valley garner a draw with Helix in the
make-up game originally cancelled due to poor air quality. Jonathan
Rangel scored for ECV, hammering home a pass from Anderias Hanna.

Wolf Pack notches league win over Braves
with penalty
Thurs., Jan. 22
West Hills 3, El Cajon Valley 2 -- Ricky Garcia took a Brian Dunne pass for an
excellent scoring opportunity, but was pulled down in the box
for a penalty kick, which Anthony Fortini converted to snap a
2-2 tie and lift the Wolf Pack to the victory.
Steele Canyon 3, Monte Vista 2 -- The Cougars were handed their first victory
in the season in 10 starts when the Monarchs put the ball into
their own net, snapping a 2-2 tie.
Crawford 1, Christian 0 - The frantic final minute of the
first half saw Christian denied a goal on a controversial foul
in the goal box, only to watch Crawford go the length of the
field to score seconds later on the counterattack for the only
goal of the game for the Harbor League leading Colts (3-1 league,
10-3-3 overall).
"The referee called a foul on us for
pushing the goalkeeper, which is pretty hard to do when you're
shooting the ball," said Patriots coach Jeff Vigil. "Then
Crawford goes right down the field and scores just before the
half. Amazing."
Senior goalie Tommy Haas recorded seven
stops for the Patriots (0-4, league
4-6-4 overall).
Eagles take opener with Robertson,
Pepin goals, Ryan shutout
EastCountySports.com
Tue., Jan. 20
Granite Hills 2, Monte Vista 0 - Thomas Ryan ran his shutout streak to four consecutive
games, backing the Eagles to a victory in their Grossmont South
League opener. Ryan has not allowed a goal over 242 consecutive
minutes, aided in the back by defenders Matt Smith, Kayton Nimmo,
Dan Sims and Jason Miller.
Gavin Robertson and Sean Pepin scored goals for Granite Hills
(12-1-2 overall), while Ryan Loustalet was noted for a strong
second-half performance, although he was unlucky when a sharp
shot from 25-yards out smacked the right post.
Grossmont 1, El Cajon Valley 0 - The ball didn't actually
enter the goal, but the Foothillers weren't complaining.
An El Cajon Valley player was issued a red card for slapping
away the ball as it was about to cross the goal line, with John
Fay converting the ensuing penalty kick in the 55th minute, sending
Grossmont to the top of the North League standings.
Armando Corrado, a first-team, All-East County goalie last season,
turned back five Braves shots for the shutout.
Hughes hits decisive goal in key North
League opening win for Sultans

Tue., Jan. 20
SANTEE - The Santana Sultans wasted a 2-0 halftime lead, but
Eric Hughes scored early in the final half-hour to reclaim the
lead, as Santana edged visiting El Capitan 4-2 in Tuesday's Grossmont
North League opener for both teams.
These two teams posted the best records in crossover action against
Grossmont South League opposition.
Drew Murphy and Devon Hefner scored for in the first half, but
after the Vaqueros equalized, Hughes scored what proved to be
the game-winner, while Tommy Wiley added an insurance goal.
Hoover 4, Christian 1 - Forward Hector Vidal scored a
pair of goals, including a perfect shot which skimmed the inside
of the left post to open the scoring, as unheralded Hoover raced
past visiting Christian, 4-1, in Harbor League action Tuesday
(Jan. 20).
Taking advantage of the wind and familiar with the subtleties
playing on its artificial surface at Wilbur Kelley Memorial Field,
the Cardinals held possession for most of the first half, building
a 2-0 lead on goals by Vidal and Jose "Junior" Garcia.
Trailing 3-0, the Patriots scored their lone goal when Kyler
Dwyer broke around a defender, taking a pass from Blake Oliver
and beating Cards goalie Michael Rios to the short side. Otherwise,
Rios needed to make just two easy saves to record the victory
for Hoover (4-1 overall, 2-1 league).

Granite Hills 1, West Hills 0 - The Wolf Pack managed a half-dozen solid scoring
opportunities over the final 15 minutes, but a goal by Alpine's
Jesse Fulcher in the 5th minute stood up to lift the Eagles'
record to 11-1-2. Sean Pepin collected the assist, while goalie
Thomas Ryan recorded 12 saves for the shutout, his third straight
blanking since the team's non-losing streak ended. Ryan now hasn't
allowed a goal over 182 minutes.

Christian 1, El Cajon Valley 1, tie
-- Sophomore forward Mao Asakawa
scored in the opening minutes for the visiting Patriots, heading
in a cross by Billy Walkenhorst, but Braves senior midfielder
Javier Salinas equalized early in the second half to merge a
draw at El Cajon Valley Stadium. Christian goalie Tommy Haas,
a senior, also registered his third block of a penalty kick this
season.
Thurs., Jan. 8
Grossmont 7, Steele Canyon 3 -- Carlos Gonzales and Rafael
Trujillo each scored twice, as the Foothillers outgunned the
Cougars in the highest-scoring game of the season. Alberto Franco,
Paul Burdick and Adrian Castellanos also scored for the Hillers.
Steele Canyon received a pair of goals from Anthony Fariciano.
El Capitan 1, Helix 0 -- An early goal by Alan Rostamijam
held up and two goalies combined on the shutout, lifting the
Vaqueros to the top of the Grossmont Conference crossover standings.
Rostamijan scored off an assist by Justin Snyder in the third
minute, while Kyle King and Justin Morris each played a half
and stopped every Highlanders shot, lifting El Cap to 8-4-3 overall
and a perfect 3-0 against the South League.

Eagles start winning streak with shutout
of Braves

Granite Hills 3, El Cajon Valley 0 - In other seasons,
a Granite Hills victory over El Cajon Valley would barely raise
an eyebrow. But with the Eagles mired in a two-game winless streak
after their 66-game unbeaten streak went by the books, the rising
Braves, who entered the week with a .500 record after posting
just two victories over all of last season, were the last team
they wanted to play on Thursday (Jan. 8).
However, seconds after ECV striker Jose Guerrero was robbed on
his breakaway attempt by Eagles goalie Thomas Ryan, Josh Sandoval
redirected an Alex Yoshinaga corner kick off the Braves goalie
and into the net for a 2-0 lead, allowing Granite Hills to right
its ship.
"We're just trying to build confidence coming off that loss,"
said Ryan, who frustrated Guerrero throughout the second half
with two other stops. "And the best way to do that was with
a shutout."
Coming off a 2-1 setback to St. Augustine to end their undefeated
streak at nearly two years to the day, the Eagles came back to
blank Grossmont in a listless scoreless tie. So blanking the
improving Braves meant much more.
"It also helped that we won by such a margin," added
Ryan. "This was the type of game we needed to play -- and
needed to win -- to bring us back."
Yoshinaga's first corner in the 8th minute was deflected into
the net by Sean Pepin for a 1-0 first-half lead.
The second half opened with both teams opening the offense and
counterattacking, when Guerrero intercepted a back pass and went
in alone on Ryan. The goalie went down to deflect the ball away,
as the players fell in a pileup which kept Guerrero down for
several moments, but he quickly returned to the contest.
The Eagles quickly countered by forcing the ball downfield, winning
another corner, as Yoshinaga sent the ball just beyond the far
post to Sandoval, who pushed the ball back into the goalie box
and off the keeper into the net at the 66th minute.
Yoshinaga later added an unassisted goal as Granite Hills (10-1-2)
became the first team in the county to amass double digits in
victories.
Wed., Jan. 7
Christian 2, Mountain Empire 1 -- The Patriots survived a
trip to the eerie depths of the far East County, escaping Pine
Valley with a 2-1 decision over the Red Hawks on Wednesday (Jan.
7). Mao Asakawa scored both goals for Christian (4-2-2), giving
him eight on the season.

Thurs., Jan. 8
Christian 1, Vincent Memorial 1, tie -- The Scots were within a minute of scoring a major
upset, but Brent Cady scored on a pass by Caleb Smith in the
final minute of regulation, allowing the Patriots (4-2-3) to
escape with a draw against the private school from Calexico.
After scoring first, the Scots packed the defensive half and
fought off wave after wave of Christian shots, surviving despite
a 19-5 advantage in shots until the Pat?s 20th shot finally found
the net.

Jordan Wade led to the second tap-in goal of the game by Kyler

Garcia gets two goals in second half as
Wolf Pack, Monarchs tie
EastCountySports.com
West Hills 3, Monte Vista 3, tie - Ricky Garcia recorded
two goals and an assist in the second half Tuesday (Jan. 6),
including the game-tying goal in the 77th minute, as the visiting
Wolf Pack rallied twice to garner a draw with the Monarchs.
"Their goalie misplayed the ball and it landed right at
my feet," noted Garcia. "I just touched it a couple
of times and rolled it to the far post."
A total of three goalkeepers and several defenders for both teams
suffered through an agonizing contest, allowing a combined four
"soft" goals off misplays or mistakes.
Monte Vista mounted a 2-0 lead by intermission, as Anthony Campos
headed in a cross by Carlos Sigala in the 10th minute. Then a
long throw-in by Anthony Perrariz was collected by Ruben Flores,
who turned on the ball and sent a low drive between the keeper's
legs.
In between goals, West Hills forward Joe McKeon smashed the right
post with a drive, then he send the rebound skirting just over
the crossbar in the Pack's first bid to knot the score. However,
the refreshed Wolf Pack needed only seven minutes of the second
half to draw even.
Garcia tapped in the loose ball after the goalie dropped a soft
centering pass, scoring in the 44th minute. Moments later, a
Garcia blast was cleared off the goal line by Monte Vista defender
Chad Adamos, but Liam Ferguson was there to cash-in the rebound.
However, the lead didn't last when Flores tallied his second
goal of the game in the 51st minute. A Campos throw-in to the
box was whiffed by a Wolf Pack defender, allowing Flores free
access to send a rolling shot inside the right post.
Grossmont 0, Granite Hills 0, tie The Foothillers went into Valley Stadium
and came away with a scoreless draw after goalie Armando Corrado
rejected nine shots to secure his shutout. Eagles keeper Thomas
Ryan stopped all six Grossmont shots to match the shutout effort,
but Granite Hills now owns a rare, two-game non-winning streak.
Christian 7, Julian 0 - Mao Asakawa collected a three-goal hat trick,
while Kyle Dwyer added a pair of first-half goals, as the Patriots
romped past the winless Eagles (0-7-0) on Tuesday.
Blake Oliver and Ryan Coleman also scored for the Pats (3-2-2).

The winning goal came on a Todd Jupin chip shot from just beyond
the box in the 56th minute, when Oceanside goalkeeper Victor

St. Augustine stops Eagles' unbeaten streak
at 66 games in Grossmont Tournament championship
EastCountySports.com
SANTEE -- Two years ago, little did Granite Hills High know that
its loss to Montgomery in the final of the Grossmont Tournament
would spawn a record undefeated streak, a run of 66 consecutive
contests... which came to an abrupt conclusion Tuesday (Dec.
23) at Santee Community Stadium.
In the championship contest of the 25th edition of the Grossmont
Tournament, once again the Eagles would fall after St. Augustine
forward Derek Degrenier headed home the game-winner in the 79th
minute in a 2-1 verdict over Granite Hills.
"This was the one we've been pointing to," said Degrenier.
"We're the defending CIF (Division III) champions and the
defending Western League champions, but we didn't get a sniff
at being number one because Granite Hills has been so good."
"So it's just a thrill to beat a team ranked second in the
nation."
The incredible feat Granite Hills lasted -- tournament-wise,
not calendar-wise -- exactly two years., covering two of the
school's three consecutive SDCIF Division I championships.
"The streak was getting bigger and bigger, but like I always
said, it wasn't that important to us," said Eagles coach
SAMI NEDJAR. "Sure it'd be nice to win and keep it going,
but I've always told the players that winning league and winning
CIF is what's important. And those goals are still available
to us.
"But give Saints credit. They played the better game today
and deserved to win."
Tournament MVP Jason Le tied the game early in the second half,
deflecting home a corner kick by Degrenier at 45:21. The sides
followed by going up-and-down the field in a physical affair,
but a mistake of aggressiveness would doom the Eagles.
"Their goalie came out and fought me for the ball,"
said Gerardo Sandoval-Neri, who beat keeper THOMAS RYAN to the
ball as it rolled to the edge of the box near the end line. "I
thought about shooting it, even from the deep angle, but it was
on my right foot when I saw two players in front of the net."
Sandoval-Neri's chip landed directly in front of Degrenier, who
headed a high volley into the net after the scoreboard clock
was stopped with less than two minutes remaining.
The Eagles (9-1-1) had a chance to tie in injury time and keep
the streak alive, but a centering pass barely raced out of the
reach of ALEX YOSHINAGA and GAVIN ROBERTSON deep inside the box.
Granite Hills scored its lone goal at 21:07, when the Saints
(8-2-3) attempted to clear, only to watch the ball bounce completely
over the head of a fullback and to the feet of SEAN PEPIN, who
drilled a 14-yarder from the left side to just inside the right
post.
In the semifinals, St. Augustine defeated Montgomery, a team
the Eagles might have preferred to play since they were the last
team to beat them, plus the sides fought to a 1-1 draw earlier
this season during pool play at the Coronado Tournament.

Eagles knock off fellow unbeaten San Pasqual
in Grossmont tourney
EastCountySports.com
Mon., Dec. 22
Granite Hills 3, San Pasqual 1 -- Another undefeated North
County based team faced-off with three-time defending San Diego
CIF Division I champion Granite Hills, and another North County
team left unable to solve the Eagles, who ran their unbeaten
streak to 66 contests following Monday's (Dec. 22) 3-1 victory
over San Pasqual in the semifinals of the 25th annual Grossmont
Tournament.
Three early mistakes by the San Pasqual defense led to three
straight first-half goals for the Eagles. But when Granite Hills
followed with two major mistakes of its own, the Golden Eagles
(5-1-2) were left reeling after twice missing the wide-open net.
"We put a lot of pressure on them early," said SEAN
PEPIN, who set-up the first goal, then scored midway through
the first half for a 3-0 lead. "After the penalty kick,
they went downhill fast while we picked up."
Pepin's hustle forced a penalty kick, which was converted by
ALEX YOSHINAGA at 8:24. Pepin was knocked down on a 50-50 ball,
but quickly got back to his feet and started to dribble the ball
when he was again taken down in the box.
Two minutes later, Yoshinaga centering was misplayed by the Golden
Eagles defense, allowing KYLE HEWITT to easily head in the volley
for a 2-0 lead at 10:27. Then in the 26th minute, Pepin intercepted
a lazy San Pasqual back pass, took three steps with the ball
and beat the defenseless goalie with a screaming shot to the
far post.
San Pasqual had two chances to rally, but missed each opportunity.
Included was a rebound following a stop by Eagles goalie THOMAS
RYAN, who re-injured his shoulder on the initial save and dropped
the ball. However, the uncontested rebound attempt from six yards
out, remarkably, missed all 80 square-feet of the goal.
Senior BRAD TACONI replaced Ryan in net and made six saves in
his 47 minutes of work, earning praise from the coaching staff,
including a stop of a point-blank shot by Steve Bryson in the
80th minute.
"I have to be ready because of Thomas' shoulder and step
up," said Taconi, who hopes to attend either UCLA, California
or UC Santa Barbara next year. "It's up to me to hold the
fort if his shoulder ever pops out again."
The victory places Granite Hills (9-0-1) into the championship
game against St. Augustine (7-2-3), which took a surprisingly
easy 3-1 decision over Montgomery (6-2-1). Kickoff is at 5 p.m.,
again at Santee Community Stadium.

post. In the second half, "Yoshi" fed a long, cross-field
pass to Sean Pepin,
who left-footed a 20-yarder in the 62nd minute, making a winner
of goalkeeper
Thomas Ryan (2 saves).
For his efforts, Yoshinaga was tabbed the
tournament MVP by the media, while
Granite Hills (4-0-1) ran its CIF-San Diego Section record undefeated
streak
to 61 consecutive games for the three-time defending champions,
who are ranked
second in the nation in the NSCAA poll.
Saul Solis and Jason Miller were noted
for strong play in the back by the
coaching staff, along with freshman Daniel Sims.
Christian 5, Mountain Empire 2 - The halftime score was 2-0 in favor of Mountain
Empire, but co-captain midfielder Blake Oliver scored 4 of the
5 second half goals for Christian.
Wed., Dec. 10
Christian 5, Tri-City Christian 0 -- Mao Asakawa and Kyler Dwyer each scored
twice, lifting the Patriots in the non-league victory. Blake
Oliver also
scored in the first victory of the season for Christian (1-2-1).
Scott Haas
posted the shutout.
Patrick Henry 2, Valhalla 1 -- The Patriots' Sal Zizzo, Jr., scored twice to
keep the visiting Norsemen (0-1-2) winless in three starts. No
information on
the Norsemen was reported.

Eagles touted second in country by national
coaches' poll
EastCountySports.com
MISSION, Kan. - The first winter season national rankings of
the National Soccer Coaches Association of America have been
released, with Granite Hills High rated second in the nation.
Miami-Sunset leads the poll after a fast 6-0 start, but the Eagles
(3-0-1), who own a 60-game undefeated streak entering Thursday's
(Dec. 11) Coronado Islander Classic championship match, are close
behind.
Other California teams in the survey include Danville-Monte Vista
(not the Spring Valley based Monarchs) in seventh, while Rancho
Santa Margarita in Orange County is among the honorable mention.
In addition, Granite Hills ranks first in Region IV, which includes
California, Arizona and Hawai'i. Among the girls, La Costa Canyon
is tops in both the nation and region.
The NSCAA conducts two polls for each gender, since half of the
nation plays a fall schedule because of the weather, while the
other half, including the CIF-San Diego Section, plays during
the winter. They are the most widely recognized national and
regional soccer ranking system in the country as a service to
the general public and its members.
According to the NSCAA, the intent of the rankings program is
to stimulate greater interest in men's and women's soccer at
the intercollegiate and interscholastic levels and to recognize
those programs that are enjoying remarkable success on a regional
and national level.

Early score is only wake-up call needed
for Eagles in 60th-straight unbeaten contest

REVISED
Tue., Dec. 9
Granite Hills 4, San Marcos 1 - Upstart San Marcos, which
was picked to finish dead-last in the Palomar League this season,
already surprised the Islander Invitational field by advancing
to the semifinals. But when the Knights scored in the opening
minute against defending tournament champion Granite Hills, the
Eagles suddenly realized they might be in a dogfight.
"We thought we could take this team easily," said fullback
Saul Solis. "But we noticed they were very quick, so we
had to pick up our game."
Responding with three goals over an 8-minute span late in the
first half, Sean Pepin ignited the offense with two goals and
an assist, as Granite Hills advanced to the tournament championship
following Tuesday's (Dec. 9) victory at Sunset Park in Coronado.
"The backs pulled together, making 1-touch passes too push
it up field," added Solis, who was noted by the coaching
staff for his fine play despite suffering the effects from the
flu.
The barrage of scoring all came on similar plays starting from
midfield, as long passes to the corner were then centered and
slammed home. Shaun Silva started the display with a lead pass
to Jesse Fulcher, who found Pepin unmarked in front for a 1-0
lead.
Moments later, Kyle Hewitt elected to go to the left wing to
start the play, as Pepin ran onto the ball and centered to Daniel
McMillian for what became the game-winning goal. Finally, with
San Marcos fullbacks anticipating passes to the outside, Alex
Yoshinaga changed-up and sent his pass from the center circle
up the middle, as Pepin came in alone of the Knights' goalie,
slamming home an 18-yarder inside the left post.
In the second half, Fulcher added a new wrinkle to the long-ball
play, sending the ball to the right wing but running after the
ball himself. The junior middie beat one defender to the ball,
turned the corner on another before being shoulder tackled down
in the box for a penalty kick, which he easily converted in the
64th minute.
The Knights' goal was scored by Jose Cruz, off an assist by Jose
Badillo.
The Eagles (3-0-1) will meet Mount Carmel in Thursday's (Dec.
11) championship at 3 p.m. The match will also be played at Sunset
Park, instead of Coronado High Stadium as originally scheduled.
The Sundevils advanced after whipping St. Augustine, 2-0, as
Tony Ortega scored a goal and an assist to back the shutout goalkeeping
of Casey Ustick.

West Hills' Ricky Garcia
boots home the decisive goal in the Wolf Pack's victory Tuesday
(12-09-03). photo by Nick Pellegrino
West Hills 2, Castle Park 1 - A failed off-sides trap
off a direct free kick allowed Ricky Garcia to be all alone at
the top of the Trojans box, as he booted home a 15-yarder for
the game-winner in the 66th minute.
Just as Wolf Pack defender Zach Mutter struck his free kick,
the Trojans' back pulled forward, giving the appearance of an
off-sides. Although the player on offense is allowed his spot
on the field up to 10 yards downfield, referees usually blow
the play down anyway, yet let this play continue.
"I knew what they were going to do, so I actually took a
step back with them before the ball was kicked," noted Garcia,
a senior forward. "And when Zach kicked it, then I moved
forward and it was just me and the goalie."
West Hills took a 1-0 lead on first-half penalty kick by Anthony
Fortini.
Christian 2, Santa Fe Christian 2, tie
Patriots goalie Tommy Haas
stopped his second penalty kick of the season, allowing Christian
to salvage a draw with the defending CIF runner-up Eagles. The
sailed to the right in the final minute of play.
Billy Walkenhorst and Kyler Dwyer scored
first-half goals for Christian, but with the roster still coming
together due to several late additions, SFC (1-0-1) was able
to rally against the tiring Patriots to get even, as Jon Korrison
scored twice.
Scripps Ranch 2, Helix 0 The Falcons made it a sweep of both La Mesa-based
school after Mike Willrich and Damian Valdez scored goals, while
David White posted the shutout of the Highlanders. Earlier, Scripps
Ranch won at Grossmont.

for an easy tap-in and the game's only goal to give the Hillers
(1-2-2) the win.

Eagles' Ryan stops Falcons
to preserve winning streak
EastCountySports.com
Granite Hills 2, Torrey Pines
1 -- Three-time defending San Diego
CIF Division I champion Granite Hills needed a stop of a penalty
kick by goalie Thomas Ryan in the final 40 seconds to preserve
its Islander Invitational opener victory at Sunset Park in Coronado
on Tuesday (Dec. 2). The triumph extended the Eagles' SDCIF record
undefeated streak to 57 contests.
Ryan admitted guilt on his mistake which allowed Falcons striker
Rikard Gellert a chance to salvage a point with a tie, but the
junior keeper claimed he "knew" that wasn't going to
happen.
"Actually, I was kind of surprised I wasn't (red) carded,
so at least I got a chance to block the shot," said Ryan,
who let a loose ball slip through his hands and land at the boot
of Gellert, who was then tackled by Ryan to prevent a pointblank
shot for the equalizer. "But at an end of a game, I am so
confident that I will make the save that I knew I would stop
this one, too."
Gellert targeted the low corner to the goalie's left, but Ryan
blocked the shot with his left hand, smothering the ball without
allowing a rebound.
"I'm just so confident in those situation after stopping
three late penalty shots last year, including one against Valhalla,"
recalled Ryan. "That's why I knew I'd stop his PK."
Granite Hills scored a pair of first-half goals on similar plays
in a three-minute span.
In the 18th minute, a corner kick by county player of the year
candidate Alex Yoshinaga was headed home by midfielder Joshua
Sandoval to the top shelf of the net. Three minutes later on
another corner, head coach Sami Nedjar summoned a last-second
switch and had Sandoval take a corner, which was smartly redirected
by Yoshinaga just inside the right post for a 2-0 lead.
Torrey Pines sliced the lead in half just two minutes into the
second half, as Gellert went high to beat Ryan after taking a
square pass from A.J. Soares.

Justin Snyder scored the game's first three goals to open the
season with a natural hat trick, as the visiting Vaqueros routed
the short-handed Matadors. Snyder scored the lone goal of the
first half, then took advantage of the tiring Matadors, who are
awaiting for recruits for their 12-man roster, by scoring twice
early in the second half.
Todd Jupin added a pair of goals for El Capitan, including a
bicycle kick for his first goal to make it 4-0. The other goal
was scored by Jeremy Shull, who was later robbed of a goal on
a great save by Mount Miguel keeper Armondo Correa on a breakaway
in the closing minutes. Meanwhile, Vaqueros goalie Justin Morris
needed just three saves to register the shutout.

Hillers lose to Willrich-led Scripps Ranch
EastCountySports.com staff report
BOYS
Scripps Ranch 5, Grossmont 2 - Paul Berdick and Bobby Schmidt scored consecutive
goals to move the host Foothillers back into the game after trailing
3-0, but Falcons forward Mike Willrich scored his second goal
of the game on a penalty late in the first half, as Scripps Ranch
went on to a season-opening triumph on Monday (Dec. 1).
Willrich, the son of former San Diego Sockers outdoor star Jean
"Cheesy" Willrich, scored in the opening eight minutes
on assists from both of the Falcons' top two playmakers - Brennan
Tennelle and Cory Cook.
Scripps Ranch out-shot the Hillers, 21-5, taking the game's first
10 shots to build an early lead before the Hillers answered with
goals on their first two shots.
Berdick re-directed a direct free-kick by Carlos Gonzales in
the 32nd minute, then four minutes later, Schmidt cashed in a
centering pass to cut the Scripps Ranch lead to 3-2.
"We're still moving people to different positions and making
adjustments," said Grossmont coach Rich Mossay. "But
I'm pleased with the way we fought back. (Sophomore forward)
Brandon Ciaccio played well for us, as did Thomas O'Laughlin
in goal."
O'Laughlin recorded eight saves, including a pair of rejections
of powerful blasts by the 6-foot-5 Willrich.
(12-01-03)
El Cajon Valley 4, El Centro Southwest
3 - Jose Guerrero registered a
hat trick for the Braves, but it was a late goal by Anderias
Hanna which proved to be the game winner, as El Cajon Valley
outlasted the visitors from El Centro.
Guerrero scored twice in the first half
for a 2-1 lead, then the teams swapped goals until Anderias connected
late, making a winner of Braves goalie David Delgado (9 saves).
