contingent Fisher took a lead pass from Fallbrook's Gabe Sanchez on the right wing, sending home a 45-degree shot from 18 yards out just inside the far-left post. Following a scoreless first half, both sides opened up the offenses, as the North County needed just four minutes to find the net, as Noe Estrada of Escondido scored off an assist by Vista's Daniel Garcia. However, the Grossmont Conference answered seven minutes later when a long centering feed Brock Coffey of Helix took a bounce in the arc and bounded to Saul Solis of Granite Hills, who slammed the ball home on a 14-yarder from directly behind the penalty spot. Along with Fisher's award, Escondido fullback Nick Perkins was tabbed Defensive Player of the Game. The contest was open to selected graduating seniors by conference coaches. Other East County participants included: Gabriel Calloway and Jonny Johnson (West Hills), David Castaneda (El Cajon Valley), Marvin Rubio (Mount Miguel), goalie Thomas Ryan (Granite Hills), Chris Villa (Monte Vista), Carlos Wilson (Valhalla) and Kyle Moore (Steele Canyon). Wilson and the injured Kyle Hewitt of Granite
Hills were earlier tabbed co-players of the year in the Grossmont
South League, while Grossmont's Adrian Castellanos was voted
Grossmont North League player of the year. Top-ranked Eagles fall to Barons in semifinals No. 13 lucky for Granite Hills The four-time defending champion Eagles (14-0-8) advance to next week's semifinals, meeting fourth-seeded Bonita Vista (10-9-2), which downed San Diego (17-6-1) in a wild 4-3 shootout in a game also moved due to the weather to Otay Ranch High. In the other half of the Division I bracket,
a pair of mild upsets occurred -- both in overtime -- as Torrey
Pines nipped second-seeded Fallbrook, 2-1, while Carlsbad shocked
cross-town rival and third-seeded La Costa Canyon by the same
2-1 count. Eagles open defense against Calexico Medina goal-fest torpedoes Vikings Tue., Feb. 22 CIF Playoffs, First Round Div. III: Monte Vista 2, La Jolla 1 -- Armando Medina, the Monarchs' scoring leader during the regular season, continued his mastery in the opening round of the CIF Playoffs, scoring both Monte Vista goals to whip La Jolla, 2-1, at rain-drenched Helix High. The Vikings came out fast, gaining several good looks at the Monte Vista goal, capped by a goal by David Peck in the 8th minute. He dropped a 20-yard shot over the head of goalkeeper Eric Leboffe, but the Monarchs' backstop would not get beat the rest of the night. Medina equalized in the 20th minute, when Carlos Sigala sent a long ball behind the Vikings defense, as Medina ran on and sent a low shot to the keeper's left. For Sigala, it was his club-leading 11th assist of the season, but he wasn't through, playing a part in the game-winner. Two minutes away from entering sudden-death overtime, Sigala played a ball back to Alan Dominguez, who sent in a cross from the right side. Three Monarchs were unmarked on the left racing towards the goal, but it was Medina who dove and headed in decider, giving him 13 goals for the season. Leboffe finished strong with seven saves, improving his record to 5-5-4 since taking over at midseason, while lowering his goals-against average to 1.43. The Monarchs (11-8-4) advance to Friday's Division III quarterfinals against St. Augustine High, starting at 3:30 p.m. Div. II: Escondido 2, El Capitan 0 -- Cougars goalie Ramon Gonzalez, who missed the entire season with a broken finger, played the second half for Escondido and shutout the Vaqueros (13-8-2). Div. III: Valhalla 4, Crawford 2 -- Travis Hummel completed a three-goal hat trick,
while Johnny Lococo also added a goal, lifting the Norsemen to
Friday's semifinals against Santana.
Eagles fly just high enough again Trailing 1-0 to arch-rival Valhalla, Josh Sandoval rocketed home a penalty kick three minutes from full time, allowing Granite Hills to escape with a draw. The point in the standings was good enough to clinch an outright Grossmont South League crown, taking the title back from the defending champion Norsemen. It was the Eagles' fourth pennant in five seasons. On a long Eagles throw-in to the box, Kyle Hewitt was nudged in the back hard enough to warrant a call from the referee, with Sandoval easily converting the ensuing penalty. Otherwise, it looked like a goal from junior varsity call-up Eric Roberson, a freshman, may have been good enough, scoring in the 64th minute off a centering service by senior captain Carlos Wilson. Granite Hills finished the season at 13-0-8 (6-0-4 GSL), while Valhalla fell to a disappointing 7-7-5 (5-4-1 GSL), although the improving Norsemen have suffered just one setback over their previous 12 outings. Monte Vista 3, Helix 2 -- Ruben Flores' second goal of the game proved to be the game-winner in the 50th minute, helping the Monarchs claim their highest finish in the Grossmont South League in a decade after downing host Helix. Monte Vista (10-8-4 overall, 5-4-1 GSL) finishes in a deadlock with Valhalla for second place, its best mark since 1995. The Monarchs jumped to a 2-0 lead on goals by Flores and Armando Medina. Flores opened scoring in the 26th minute on a breakaway, then Medina scored two minutes later off a corner kick. Carlos Sigala assisted on both goals to bring his team-leading total to 10. However, the Highlanders did not roll over on Senior Night, registering a pair of tallies in the late minutes of the first half to end the half tied at 2-all. Wed., Feb. 16 Medina registered a goal and an assist following a scoreless first half. He first assisted on a goal by senior midfielder Eric Leboffe, who struck a left-footed blast from 30 yards into the far upper "V" for his seventh goal of the season at the 45-minute mark. Then five minutes from full time, Medina collected an insurance goal off an assist from Alan Dominguez. Medina now has 10 goals and four assists
for the year, moving Monte Vista to within one point of second-place
Valhalla in the Grossmont South League. Tim Ferrara, Anton Burman and Ben Belmont also scored for Grossmont (17-6-1 overall, 7-1-0 GNL), which extended its 2-0 halftime lead to three before West Hills answered twice, yet never got closer. The Pack falls into a second-place deadlock with El Capitan, both at 4-3-0 in league. Valhalla 2, Helix 1 -- The Norsemen scored once in each half to down the visiting Highlanders in Grossmont South League action. Down by two goals in the game's closing
moments, Helix pulled one back when Dustin Stern-Garcia's cross
found charging teammate Brock Coffey, who headed it home from
outside the six-yard area. Valhalla's goals were not reported.
No. 1 Eagles on target, reclaim GSL crown Alan Gabrielson headed home a quick free kick which was floated through the 6-yard box by Dustin Mills late in the first half for the game's only tally. The victory gives Granite Hills (13-0-7 overall, 6-0-3 GSL) no worse than a tie for the league crown, finishing the season Friday against second-place Valhalla, which must snap the Eagles' 21-game unbeaten streak to also grab a share of the title. Both teams came out firing in the second
half, with the Cougars gaining the first two scoring opportunities.
However, the Eagles defense, led by Ryan Monty, Kayton Nimmo
and Matt Smith held firm, allowing goalkeeper Thomas Ryan to
earn his 11th shutout of the season. Mon., Feb. 14 Chris Rangel scored his first goal of the season on a header, with Tim Ferrara gaining the assist for Grossmont, but El Capitan tied it with a header off a free kick. Cliff Waller then helped put the game away in the second half, scoring on a breakaway after a pass by Al Maganuco sent Waller away one-on-one with the goalie. Waller then assisted on the first goal of the season by Ben Belmont. Monte Vista 1, Steele Canyon 1, tie -- After watching their title hopes dashed earlier in the week, the flat Monarchs had to settle for a draw against the last-place Cougars during a steady drizzle at Cougar Canyon. Steele Canyon midfielder Wayne Lampart opened the scoring midway through the first half when he collected a poor clearing pass and sent a shot just inside the left post from just outside the area. Each side had good chances to score, but the half ended with no further scoring. In addition, the Monarchs squandered several good scoring chances due to being offside. In the second half, the Monarchs, which squandered several scoring chances to offsides infractions, finally broke through. In the 62nd minute, defender Chris Villa delivered a long ball behind the Cougars defense and sent Ruben Flores in alone on goal, scoring on a low shot to the right corner. Monte Vista (3-1-4, 8-8-4) received one last chance, but the final whistle came just after midfielder Alan Dominguez was denied on a breakaway chance. Steele Canyon moves to 0-6-2, 3-9-4. Wed., Feb. 9 In the first half, Grossmont forward Tim Ferrara nodded home a cross from Maganuco. Paul Burdick followed with a similar goal, with Maganuco's cross coming in the form of a corner kick. The victory allows the Foothillers an opportunity
to gain at least a tie for the league title when they meet El
Capitan on Thursday. Thurs., Feb. 10 Granite Hills (5-0-3 GSL, 12-0-7 overall) now leads second-standing Valhalla by one full game with two contests remaining. Dustin Mills scored in the first half as a Shaun Silva throw-in was flicked on by Dan Sims, with Mills providing the finishing touch. In the second half, Kyle Hewitt put a ball across the goal which Ben Maypole played on, with Saul Solis finishing for an important insurance goal. Meanwhile, the Highlanders (3-3-2, 7-8-3) mounted few scoring opportunities, as Josh Sandoval and Dominic Picone provided solid minutes in the midfield for the Eagles. Wed., Feb. 9 Ryan scored on a blast off the left post, as Dustin Mills assisted to complete a 5-point performance with three assists and an unassisted goal. Mills deflected a shot to open the scoring in the 18th minute. Two minutes later, a Mills shot was redirected by senior midfielder Kyle Hewitt, sending the ball off the left post and in for a 2-0 lead. Also scoring for Granite Hills was Daniel
McMillin on a bouncing shot early in the second half. Meanwhile,
reserve goalie Ronald "R.J." Smith matched Ryan with
a pair of saves to complete the shutout. Trailing 1-0 on a Mount Miguel goal at the quarter-hour, Helix beat the halftime whistle to equalize when senior Angelo Novenario sent a through ball to Stern-Garcia, who beat the keeper with a low shot to the far post. The Highlanders went ahead just after the break when senior Keith Miller found Stern-Garcia for his second goal of the evening. After several minutes of solid play by each side, Mount Miguel knotted the game up with nine minutes to go. Stern-Garcia just missed collecting a hat-trick
which would have given Helix the win in the final minutes. The
sophomore broke through the Matador defense and beat their diving
keeper from 12 yards out, but with nothing but open net in front,
the ball pushed wide to the left from inside the six. Prior to the shouting match, the Norsemen
scored early when Brett Johnson collected a punch-out by Monte
Vista goalie Eric Leboffe, sending home the rebound just
under the crossbar from 18 yards away in the 9th minute. (02-05-05) Fri., Feb. 4 Helix 4, Steele Canyon 2 -- The Highlanders erupted for three goals in the opening 20 minutes, racing to an easy Grossmont South League triumph while keeping the Cougars winless in league play. Sophomore forward Dustin Stern-Garcia caught
goalkeeper Jesse Nunez Helix made it 2-0 at the quarter-hous, when senior Keith Miller fed a through ball to streaking senior forward Angelo Novenario, who beat the diving Nunez from just inside the penalty area. The Scotties added another score just minutes
later when Coffey fed a slow rolling free kick to Miller, who
slammed it home. Steele Canyon pulled one goal back before the
half, but Miller added his second goal of the game 15 minutes
into the second half, finishing a Novenario cross for a 4-1 advantage. Hillers roar back following PKs Waller scored unassisted in the early going, but the referee blew down a pair of infractions in the box on Grossmont, as Sultans striker Taylor Tomlin converted from the spot both times. However, the Hillers scored four unanswered
times after the intermission, including a pair of goals by Tim
Ferrara, while Chris Rangel posted a pair of assists. Monte Vista 3, Helix 0 -- The stellar playmaking skills of Carlos Sigala led to assists on all three goals, lifting the surprising Monarchs into sole possession of first place in the Grossmont South League after blanking visiting Helix. Sigala's helped moved him into the teams lead with eight assists, one more than junior midfielder Ruben Flores. Meanwhile, Monarchs goalkeeper Eric Leboffe made four saves to earn his third shutout of the year. The Highlanders' best chance came early in the 18th minute, when Keith Miller received a ball 10 yards out to the right of the goal. Leboffe came out and dove to cover the point-blank shot. The rest of the contest belonged to Monte Vista (8-7-2 overall, 3-0-2 GSL). In the 22nd minute, Sigala set up Alan Dominguez to the right of the Highlanders goal. Dominguez's first shot was blocked by Helix keeper Alex Riggins, but the rebound went right back to Dominguez for a 1-0 lead at the break. After several strong Monarchs scoring chances in the second half, including chances by Flores, Pelon Lozano and Anthony Campos, Sigala broke through again after sending a long forward pass which bounced over Riggins' head when he came out to collect it at the top of the box. Lozano raced around the keeper and deposited the ball in the back of the net to make it 2-0 in the 60th minute. It was Lozano's fifth goal of the season. Ten minutes later, Sigala sent a long cross from the right side to the back post where Armando Medina headed home for his club-leading ninth of the campaign, keeping his scoring streak alive through six ballgames. Granite Hills 1, Valhalla 1, tie -- Jason Dall headed in a throw-in to give the defending GSL champion Norsemen the early lead, but Saul Solis equalized before halftime by knocking in a rebound off a corner kick, keeping the defending CIF champion Eagles (9-0-6, 2-0-2) undefeated through 15 contests. Granite Hills, with six points in the standings, trails Monte Vista (3-0-2, 8 points) but owns a game in hand following a recent rainout. Valhalla (2-1-2) also has six points but the Norsemen have played an extra contest. CCPA 4, River Valley 3 -- Trailing 2-1 at the half, the Snow Leopards received second-half goals from junior forward Troy Denner and freshman Anthony Williams to claim a 3-2 lead, only to watch the Center for Creative & Performing Arts answer with a pair of late goals to win at Lakeside Middle School. For Denner, it was his second goal of the
game, also scoring on a penalty kick in the first half for River
Valley (2-4-1) in the non-league contest. Fri., Jan. 28 Wed., Jan. 26 Tim Ferrara and Adrian Castellanos scored to allow the Hillers (12-5-1, 2-0-0) to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission. Ferraea headed home a perfect cross by Castellanos cross at the quarter-hour mark, then Castellanos scored 10 minutes later on a shot from outside the box. El Capitan pulled one goal back on a play
off an indirect free kick in the box, but Grossmont's Cliff Waller
answered with a goal, as Al Maganuco recorded the assist for
a 3-1 lead. The Vaqueros (10-5-2, 2-1-0) moved with a goal by
scoring with five minutes remaining, yet still suffered their
first league setback. Monarchs rally from two down to remain
undefeated Fri., Jan. 21 Granite Hills opened the scoring early when a cross found led to an open shot at the left side of the goal. Monte Vista goaltender Eric Leboffe made the first save on the point-blank shot, but the rebound led to a tap-in goal for a 1-0 halftime lead. The Monarchs pressed the attack and earned the tying goal in the 60th minute. Team scoring leader Armando Medina continued his scoring streak with his third goal in as many games, beating goalie Thomas Ryan during a scramble in the box. Carlos Sigala got the assist. The Eagles reclaimed the lead minutes later,
but the Monarchs tied the game with four minutes left when Ruben
Flores scored his second goal of the season off a long pass from
Chris Villa. The frantic final minutes saw open shots by both
teams before the sides settled for the draw. Fri., Jan. 14 Helix senior Angelo Novenario scored early
off a cross by sophomore Dustin Stern Senior captain Brock Coffey later headed home a corner kick by junior Riley Richardson to lead by four. However, unlike its earlier draw with Steele Canyon earlier in the week, Helix was able to hold off Mount Miguel, which scored once before the intermission, then twice more in the second half only to fall short. Tue., Jan. 25 Wed., Jan. 19 It was all Highlanders in the first half, when senior forward Angelo Novenario twice found the back of the net of one-on-one chances with the Cougars' keeper. The Highlanders could not hold a 3-1 halftime advantage allowing the Cougars to claw back into the match and claim a 4-4 draw. Helix senior forward Angelo Novenario found the back of the net twice in the first half off a pair of one on one chances with the Steel Canyon keeper. Sophomore Dustin Stern Garcia and senior Oscar De La Torre assisted on the Novenario goals. The Scotties then went up 3-0 when a free kick by sophomore Adam Shutts found the head of fellow sophomore Jason Sanchez in the penalty area. However, Steele Canyon started to claw back. finding some life late in the half by pulling back a goal on a well-placed, 20-yard free kick by Wayne Lampart. Lampart kept the Cougars on fire by scoring
twice more to equalize to complete the hat trick, then Matt Gillespie
scored for a 4-3 lead. However, Novenario completed his hat trick
by converting a penalty kick in the final minutes to cap the
wild affair. Wed., Jan. 19 The scoring spree started when Tim Ferrara tied the game, then Al Maganuco also quickly found the net to give Grossmont a 3-2 advantage. And when Taylor Lindblom and Cliff Waller scored moments later, the Hillers (10-4-1) were on their way, with Anton Burman capping the scoring with five minute remaining. Helix built an early lead on goals by Keith
Miller and Nicolas Wright, while Adrian Castellanos scored in
the first half for Grossmont. Fri., Jan. 7 El Capitan claimed an early lead on a pair of goals by Anthony Pernicano, who converted a first-half penalty kick, then scored on a rebound early in the second half for a 2-0 lead. Helix (4-4-2) rallied to tie on markers by Subeer Heif and Angelo Novenario. Heif finished from six yards out in the 66th minute, then Novenario knotted it three minutes later by heading home a Brock Coffey free kick. Grossmont 2, Monte Vista -- Thomas O'Laughlin posted his second shutout of the weekend, back-stopping the Foothillers to a Grossmont Conference crossover triumph over the Monarchs. The keeper registered two saves, lifting Grossmont's overal record to 9-4-1 overall. Thurs., Jan. 6 Wed., Jan. 5 Grossmont 1, Mount Miguel 0 -- Grossmont goalkeeper Thomas O'Laughlin registered three saves in posting the shutout for the Foothillers (8-4-1) in a Grossmont Conference crossover contest. The goalie got a little lucky during the scoreless first half when the Matadors missed everything on a penalty kick. The Hillers finally broke through with 15 minutes remaining when Cliff Waller scored off an assist by Tim Ferrara. Helix 6, El Cajon Valley 0 -- A stellar defensive performance was turned in by Highlanders seniors Brock Coffey and Brett Milburn, and sophomores Jade Molde and Adam Shutts, who limited the Braves' attack to only a pair of shots at goal in the shutout victory. The Scotties needed only three minutes to score when sophomore Jason Sanchez headed home a Keith Miller cornerkick to start the rout. From there, senior Angelo Novenario slotted home goal number two in the 10th minute, then Sanchez added his second goal of the night just before halftime. The underclassmen scoring bonanza continued in the second half with two goals off the laces of sophomore forward Dustin Stern-Garcia. Senior Subeer Heif finally capped the scoring by placing a ball into the upper 'V' from 20 yards in the closing minutes. Wed., Dec. 22 Eagles make presence felt in Grossmont Classic final East County Sports.com Granite Hills 0, Carlsbad 0 (GH on PKs 3-1) -- Whether one is surprised or not, the formula continues to ring true: In order to capture the CIF soccer title, the road -- again -- runs through Granite Hills. Despite the loss of a rash of standout players from the 2004 state championship team, the Eagles proved they are the team to beat yet again after capturing the 26th annual Grossmont Holiday Classic after staving off Carlsbad on penalty kicks in Wednesday's (Dec. 22) Premier Division finale. The teams played to a scoreless draw, then Granite Hills goalkeeper Thomas Ryan, the tournament MVP, allowed just one goal on four Lancers shots to claim the shootout. Ryan registered seven saves, including one easy stop in overtime for the shutout. The Eagles are now 8-0-2 this season and are the official team to beat as the team seeks a fifth consecutive CIF Division I crown. "Sure, a lot of people thought we were iffy after losing so many good players like Jason Miller, Sean Pepin and Yoshi (Alex Yoshinaga)," explained Ryan. "They won on heart and a lot of key players." "But just like the previous four teams, we win on heart, too." In a classic battle, both sides created numerous scoring situations, only to have the opponent's defense step up to resist the pressure. The closest either team came to finding the net came late in regulation, when the Eagles had a hard shot from the wing hit the side netting, while another loose ball was cleared by Carlsbad keeper from near its goal line. "It was soccer as you like it," noted Eagles coach Sami Nedjar, the reigning coach of the year for both high school soccer and regionally in club soccer. "Both teams went up-and-down the field, but it felt like Ryan was the difference." In the shootout, both teams scored on their first opportunities, including a goal by the Eagles' Josh Sandoval. But then Ryan dived to his left for his first stop, with Matt Smith countering for a 2-1 lead, then Ryan went right for yet another show-stopping save, with Kyle Hewitt converting for a 3-1 lead. Although slated for five rounds, when the fourth Lancers shot sailed over the top, Granite Hills mathematically earned the trophy needing only 3.5 rounds. "When you see how we have filled in for the players we've lost, there's no doubt we'll be in the running once again," added Ryan, a senior coming off a season when he was tabbed to the All-County team. Kyle's our playmaker in the middle who can push up the field, Matt is solid in front of me on defense, and although he's been hurt, Saul Solis can finish (score)." "And we have some new players, too, like Adam Mooney, who is really strong and will get a lot of assists with his long throw-ins. We call him 'Red Rocket.' " It was the third straight Grossmont Tournament finals appearance for the Eagles, splitting the contests. They lost to Montgomery in 2001 semis, then began a two-year, 66-game unbeaten streak which was snapped in the 2003 finale to St. Augustine. Granite Hills downed Carlsbad in pool play this season, 1-0, but the Lancers still managed to come through to reach the title match after downing St. Augustine in the semifinals to prevent a finals rematch. Free kicks -- Ryan is considering offers from Cal Poly Pomona and Notre Dame de Namur, the school where former Eagles Anthony Putrus and Mike Whittaker currently play. Both Argonauts were named to the NCAA All Region II First Team last month. Putrus, a sophomore defender, had a strong second season as he was a large part of the NDNU defense which allowed only 164 shots all season. It was his first time named to the All Region squad. Whittaker, a senior goalie, received his second All Region nomination after helping the Argos to its seventh Cal Pac Conference championship and advancing to the Region II semifinals. Whittaker, finished with a 1.04 goal against average and 21 goals scored against for NDNU (17-5-2). - All-Tournament Team Premier Division Thomas Ryan, Sr., Granite Hills (MVP) Josh Sandoval, Jr., Granite Hills Matt Smith, Sr., Granite Hills Kyle Hewitt, Sr, Granite Hills Tim Ferrara, Sr., Grossmont Adrian Castellanos, Sr., Grossmont Neal Keith, Sr., Carlsbad Francisco Flores, Sr., Carlsbad Sheffer Bannigan, Sr., Carlsbad Gary Hodgeson, Sr., Montgomery Andrew Mercado, Sr., Montgomery Sal Zizzo, Sr. Patrick Henry Classified Division Ruben Rodriguez, Jr., Hilltop (MVP) Derek Cardinale, Sr., Steele Canyon Wayne Lampert, Sr., Steele Canyon Paul McComb, Sr., Steele Canyon Jamel Wallace, Sr., Oceanside Armando Cervantes, Jr., Oceanside Eric Padilla, Sr., Rancho Buena Vista Anthony Pernicano, Jr., El Capitan Adam McDonald, Sr., El Capitan Jose Castro, Sr., Hilltop Alex Parker, Sr., Hilltop (12-22-04) Eagles, Saints again possible in final Mon., Dec. 20 Granite Hills 3, Grossmont 2 -- After drawing 3-all in pool play, another score-fest ensued between these teams Monday (Dec. 20), as the Eagles rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the second half to slip past the Foothillers in the semifinals of the 26th annual Grossmont Holiday Classic. Kyle Hewitt scored his second goal of the contest on a penalty kick to tie the contest, then Jesse Fulcher delivered the game-winner for the undefeated Eagles (6-0-2). Following an early Hewitt for a 1-0 halftime lead, Grossmont got even on Cliff Waller's unassisted goal, then temporarily went in front when Al Maganuco slammed home a pass from Tim Ferrara. Grossmont reached the final four following a 3-2 verdict over Montgomery in the quarterfinals, as Ferrara scored twice, then Anton Burman scored unassisted on the game-winner to down the Aztecs. Granite Hills advances to Wednesday's 5
p.m. finale against the winner of the late contest between St.
Augustine and Carlsbad. Should Saints win, it would bring a rematch
of the 2003 Premiere Division final won by St. Augustine, which
snapped the CIF record 66-game unbeaten streak of the Eagles.
Eagles advance to Grossmont semis Granite Hills 1, West Hills 0 -- Shaun Silva scored the game's lone goal, while Thomas Ryan registered his four shutout of the season, as Granite Hills downed the Wolf Pack in the quarterfinals of the Grossmont Holiday Classic. The undefeated Eagles (6-0-2) advance to Monday's semifinals. Westview 2, Monte Vista 0 -- The undefeated Wolverines (5-0-1) made a statement to be included in next week's debut release of the county rankings after overwhelming the Monarchs in the final pool play contest of the Grossmont Holiday Classic. The match was held at Rancho Buena Vista High. The rough-and-tumble, physical affair was marred by 12 bookings, including a red card to each side, but Westview controlled the ball throughout, out-shooting Monte Vista, 26-1, to control the scoreboard behind a goal and an assist from Bryan Higgs. At the 34th minute, Higgs found net from 25 yards out to open the scoring, assisted by Taylor Adams. Higgs then stole the ball in the 50th minute, feeding the ball to Alex Zdvorak for another goal. A third goal might have been scored had not Monte Vista midfielder Angel Bustos blocked the shot on the line. Senior goalie Ken Redmond finished the final 15 minutes of the game and blocked four shots for the Monarchs (3-6-0). Meanwhile, Thomas Grover and Eric Davison combined on the shutout for Westview. With the victory, the Wolverines advanced
to the afternoon quarterfinals, but fell to another undefeated
side, when Rancho Buena Vista (7-0-1) thumped Westview (5-1-1),
3-0. Wed., Dec. 15 Grossmont 6, Steele Canyon 0 -- The Foothillers continue to rank as the highest-scoring
team in East County, rolling a 6-spot on the Cougars in this
Grossmont Conference crossover contest. Tim Ferrara scored a
pair of second-half goals, while goalie Dennis MacIsaac recorded
three saves for the shutout of the previously undefeated Cougars. Sat., Dec. 11 Monte Vista 3, Otay Ranch 0 -- Eric Leborre and Ken Redmond recorded the first
shutout of the season for the Monarchs to saddle the Mustangs.
Leborre made a pair of first-half saves Granite Hills 3, Chula Vista 0 -- Following a scoreless first half, the Eagles (2-0) turned up the heat with three second-half goals to put away the Spartans (1-3). Josh Sandoval started the barrage when he served a free kick into the box, where Dan McMillin headed the ball across the face of the goal to Kyle Hewitt for the easy finish to open the scoring. McMillin and Hewitt also combined on the next goal, with McMillin finishing it off, then the Eagles capped the outburst when Jesse Fulcher slotted home a penalty kick. Senior goalie Thomas Ryan was credited with three saves for the shutout. Grossmont 2, Mira Mesa 0 -- Thomas O'laughlin registered five saves to collect the shutout, as the Foothillers (3-2) blanked the Marauders to extend their winning streak to three games. The Hillers scored in each half, as Taylor
Lindblom found the net off an assist by Brandon Ciaccio, then
Al Maganuco scored on a penalty kick after being taking down
in the box. However, he needed to take "shot from the mark"
twice because his first attempt came before the whistle. Mon., Dec. 6 Midfielder Eric Leboffe's penalty kick goal gave the Monarchs a 2-1 lead, but Hilltop finally tied it with five minutes to go after Monte Vista defenders Brian Woods and Carlos Sigala blocked shots and cleared moments earlier. After Hilltop took the early lead, Ruben
Flores equalized in the 37th minute, beating the keeper from
close range to the right side following a nice cross by Sigala.
Q's put Monarchs in pressure cooker Sat., Dec. 4
EastCountySports.com Stern-Garcia, a sophomore forward, found Miller open for an 18-yard blast -- the lone goal of the second half, as the Scotties defense blanked Mira Mesa over the final 60 minutes after allowing an early breakaway to open the scoring and a penalty kick. The back was headed by captain Brock Coffey
