Nedjar resigns from Eagles soccer post
EastCountySports.com

EL CAJON -- SAMI B. NEDJAR, one of the most successful soccer coaches in Grossmont Conference history, resigned his post as boys soccer coach at Granite Hills High earlier this week.

Nedjar, who guided the Eagles to four consecutive CIF-San Diego Section Division I championships (2000-03), wanted to spend more time with his growing family, thus will limit his duties to director of coaching for the Hotspurs USA club program.

His trimming of high school duties began in 2004, when he stepped down from concurrently coaching the Granite Hills girls program, which blossomed to advance to the CIF title game under his tutelage in 2004, then became CIF champs under his successor this past season.

During Nedjar's tenure at Granite Hills, his boys teams compiled a stretch of 66 consecutive matches without a loss (2001-03) - second-longest in section history. While with Hotspurs USA, he was once named National Youth Coach of the Year, and twice was a regional coach of the year winner.

Locals drop all-star contest to Northern contingent
East County Sports.com
EL CAJON -- Valley Center High striker Paul Fisher scored the tiebreaking goal in the 67th minute, earning Offensive Player of the Game laurels in leading the North County Conference past the Grossmont Conference, 2-1, in Wednesday's (Mar. 16) inaugural boys soccer All-Star Classic at Grossmont High.

Fisher took a lead pass from Fallbrook's Gabe Sanchez on the right wing, sending home a 45-degree shot from 18 yards out just inside the far-left post.

Following a scoreless first half, both sides opened up the offenses, as the North County needed just four minutes to find the net, as Noe Estrada of Escondido scored off an assist by Vista's Daniel Garcia.

However, the Grossmont Conference answered seven minutes later when a long centering feed Brock Coffey of Helix took a bounce in the arc and bounded to Saul Solis of Granite Hills, who slammed the ball home on a 14-yarder from directly behind the penalty spot.

Along with Fisher's award, Escondido fullback Nick Perkins was tabbed Defensive Player of the Game.

The contest was open to selected graduating seniors by conference coaches. Other East County participants included: Gabriel Calloway and Jonny Johnson (West Hills), David Castaneda (El Cajon Valley), Marvin Rubio (Mount Miguel), goalie Thomas Ryan (Granite Hills), Chris Villa (Monte Vista), Carlos Wilson (Valhalla) and Kyle Moore (Steele Canyon).

Wilson and the injured Kyle Hewitt of Granite Hills were earlier tabbed co-players of the year in the Grossmont South League, while Grossmont's Adrian Castellanos was voted Grossmont North League player of the year.

Top-ranked Eagles fall to Barons in semifinals
EastCountySports.com

LA MESA - The word lose is not included in the Granite Hills boys soccer vocabulary. Or so it seems.  Coach SAMI NEDJAR's Eagles dropped a 2-1 decision to upstart Bonita Vista in Tuesday's (Mar.1) San Diego Section Division I semifinals at Helix High.

The loss was the first of the year for the Eagles (14-1-8), who had won four straight Division I championships. During that stretch, the Eagles compiled an unbeaten stretch of 66 matches.

All of that came to an end when the Barons' Tony Lizarrozo banged home a penalty kick to snap a 1-1 tie with 15 minutes remaining.

This was a huge upset, considering Bonita Vista (12-9-3) began the campaign 2-9. The Barons rebounded to go undefeated in their last 13 games and now have a shot at the Division I title.

Bonita Vista took the lead on a throw-in flick with Drew Dinsmore finishing.

The Eagles tied the score when SAUL SOLIS executed a penalty kick early in the second half.

Gracious in a rare defeat, Nedjar praised MATT SMITH, KAYTON NIMMO and JOSH SANDOVAL for their efforts in the losing cause.

No. 13 lucky for Granite Hills
Fri., Feb. 25
Granite Hills 3, Calexico 1
-- The Bulldogs had revenge on their mind after losing in a similar situation last season, but Granite Hills continued its playoff mastery, capturing its 13th consecutive CIF-SDS Division I postseason contest after beating the visitors from the Imperial Valley. The game was played at Grossmont High due to recent rains left Valley Stadium in less than fit playing shape.

The four-time defending champion Eagles (14-0-8) advance to next week's semifinals, meeting fourth-seeded Bonita Vista (10-9-2), which downed San Diego (17-6-1) in a wild 4-3 shootout in a game also moved due to the weather to Otay Ranch High.

In the other half of the Division I bracket, a pair of mild upsets occurred -- both in overtime -- as Torrey Pines nipped second-seeded Fallbrook, 2-1, while Carlsbad shocked cross-town rival and third-seeded La Costa Canyon by the same 2-1 count.

Eagles open defense against Calexico
Wed., Feb. 23
East County Sports.com

EL CAJON -- Granite Hills High will open its record fourth defense of its CIF San Diego Section Division I boys soccer crown when the Eagles host Calexico High in Friday's quarterfinals.
The contest has been moved to Grossmont High and will start at 5 p.m. as the first of a doubleheader. The second game will be a Division II quarterfinal-round contest between University City and the host Foothillers.
Granite Hills is 13-0-8 this season, surviving several challenges yet remained undefeated in all 21 games. The contest will also be a rematch from 2004, when the Eagles fell behind early to the Bulldogs but rallied for a 3-2 victory -- also played at Grossmont. The game-winning goal came during added time and was the first of the school's current string of 24 games going undefeated over a 2-year span.
The Eagles are also the defending mythical state champions, as selected by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. In addition, they were NSCAA national champions in 2003.
Three other East County teams will also be in action Friday, all in Division III, including a Grossmont Conference showdown with Valhalla traveling to Santana for a 5 p.m. showdown. Meanwhile, Monte Vista is on the road for a 3 p.m. kickoff at St. Augustine.

Medina goal-fest torpedoes Vikings
Tue., Feb. 22
CIF Playoffs, First Round
Div. III: Monte Vista 2, La Jolla 1
-- Armando Medina, the Monarchs' scoring leader during the regular season, continued his mastery in the opening round of the CIF Playoffs, scoring both Monte Vista goals to whip La Jolla, 2-1, at rain-drenched Helix High.

The Vikings came out fast, gaining several good looks at the Monte Vista goal, capped by a goal by David Peck in the 8th minute. He dropped a 20-yard shot over the head of goalkeeper Eric Leboffe, but the Monarchs' backstop would not get beat the rest of the night.

Medina equalized in the 20th minute, when Carlos Sigala sent a long ball behind the Vikings defense, as Medina ran on and sent a low shot to the keeper's left. For Sigala, it was his club-leading 11th assist of the season, but he wasn't through, playing a part in the game-winner.

Two minutes away from entering sudden-death overtime, Sigala played a ball back to Alan Dominguez, who sent in a cross from the right side. Three Monarchs were unmarked on the left racing towards the goal, but it was Medina who dove and headed in decider, giving him 13 goals for the season.

Leboffe finished strong with seven saves, improving his record to 5-5-4 since taking over at midseason, while lowering his goals-against average to 1.43. The Monarchs (11-8-4) advance to Friday's Division III quarterfinals against St. Augustine High, starting at 3:30 p.m.

Div. II: Escondido 2, El Capitan 0 -- Cougars goalie Ramon Gonzalez, who missed the entire season with a broken finger, played the second half for Escondido and shutout the Vaqueros (13-8-2).

Div. III: Valhalla 4, Crawford 2 -- Travis Hummel completed a three-goal hat trick, while Johnny Lococo also added a goal, lifting the Norsemen to Friday's semifinals against Santana.

Eagles fly just high enough again
Fri., Feb. 18
Granite Hills 1, Valhalla 1
-- In a game relocated to Grossmont High due to weather worries, the Eagles concluded the regular season without a loss over all 21 consecutive games, all but assuring themselves of the top seed to the CIF Division I soccer championship. But the contest was the closest the Eagles came to finally losing all season.

Trailing 1-0 to arch-rival Valhalla, Josh Sandoval rocketed home a penalty kick three minutes from full time, allowing Granite Hills to escape with a draw. The point in the standings was good enough to clinch an outright Grossmont South League crown, taking the title back from the defending champion Norsemen. It was the Eagles' fourth pennant in five seasons.

On a long Eagles throw-in to the box, Kyle Hewitt was nudged in the back hard enough to warrant a call from the referee, with Sandoval easily converting the ensuing penalty. Otherwise, it looked like a goal from junior varsity call-up Eric Roberson, a freshman, may have been good enough, scoring in the 64th minute off a centering service by senior captain Carlos Wilson.

Granite Hills finished the season at 13-0-8 (6-0-4 GSL), while Valhalla fell to a disappointing 7-7-5 (5-4-1 GSL), although the improving Norsemen have suffered just one setback over their previous 12 outings.

Monte Vista 3, Helix 2 -- Ruben Flores' second goal of the game proved to be the game-winner in the 50th minute, helping the Monarchs claim their highest finish in the Grossmont South League in a decade after downing host Helix. Monte Vista (10-8-4 overall, 5-4-1 GSL) finishes in a deadlock with Valhalla for second place, its best mark since 1995.

The Monarchs jumped to a 2-0 lead on goals by Flores and Armando Medina. Flores opened scoring in the 26th minute on a breakaway, then Medina scored two minutes later off a corner kick. Carlos Sigala assisted on both goals to bring his team-leading total to 10. However, the Highlanders did not roll over on Senior Night, registering a pair of tallies in the late minutes of the first half to end the half tied at 2-all.

Wed., Feb. 16
Monte Vista 2, Mount Miguel 0
-- Club scoring leader Armando Medina ended a three-game scoring drought by lending a hand in both goals, while goalie Ken Redmond recorded his fourth shutout, pacing the Monarchs past the visiting Matadors.

Medina registered a goal and an assist following a scoreless first half. He first assisted on a goal by senior midfielder Eric Leboffe, who struck a left-footed blast from 30 yards into the far upper "V" for his seventh goal of the season at the 45-minute mark. Then five minutes from full time, Medina collected an insurance goal off an assist from Alan Dominguez.

Medina now has 10 goals and four assists for the year, moving Monte Vista to within one point of second-place Valhalla in the Grossmont South League.
Grossmont 5, West Hills 3 -- Taylor Lindblom scored a pair of goals, then the Foothillers staved off a Wolf Pack rally to place the finishing touches on their Grossmont North League title.

Tim Ferrara, Anton Burman and Ben Belmont also scored for Grossmont (17-6-1 overall, 7-1-0 GNL), which extended its 2-0 halftime lead to three before West Hills answered twice, yet never got closer. The Pack falls into a second-place deadlock with El Capitan, both at 4-3-0 in league.

Valhalla 2, Helix 1 -- The Norsemen scored once in each half to down the visiting Highlanders in Grossmont South League action.

Down by two goals in the game's closing moments, Helix pulled one back when Dustin Stern-Garcia's cross found charging teammate Brock Coffey, who headed it home from outside the six-yard area. Valhalla's goals were not reported.

No. 1 Eagles on target, reclaim GSL crown
Wed., Feb. 16
Granite Hills 1, Steele Canyon 0
-- They may be the four-time defending CIF Division I champions, but the one title Granite Hills failed to win last season was the Grossmont South League trophy. That oversight was corrected Wednesday (Feb. 16).

Alan Gabrielson headed home a quick free kick which was floated through the 6-yard box by Dustin Mills late in the first half for the game's only tally. The victory gives Granite Hills (13-0-7 overall, 6-0-3 GSL) no worse than a tie for the league crown, finishing the season Friday against second-place Valhalla, which must snap the Eagles' 21-game unbeaten streak to also grab a share of the title.

Both teams came out firing in the second half, with the Cougars gaining the first two scoring opportunities. However, the Eagles defense, led by Ryan Monty, Kayton Nimmo and Matt Smith held firm, allowing goalkeeper Thomas Ryan to earn his 11th shutout of the season.

Mon., Feb. 14
Grossmont 2, Santana 1
-- Cliff Waller and Anton Burman scored for the Foothilllers (6-1-0 GNL, 16-6-1 overall), clinching the Grossmont North League championship.

Hillers finish climbing the Wall-er
Thurs., Feb. 10
Grossmont 3, El Capitan 1
-- Cliff Waller registered the go-ahead goal and added an assist on the insurance tally, helping the Foothillers (5-1-0 GNL, 15-6-1 overall) clinch at least a share of the Grossmont North League title after vanquishing the second-place Vaqueros.

Chris Rangel scored his first goal of the season on a header, with Tim Ferrara gaining the assist for Grossmont, but El Capitan tied it with a header off a free kick.

Cliff Waller then helped put the game away in the second half, scoring on a breakaway after a pass by Al Maganuco sent Waller away one-on-one with the goalie. Waller then assisted on the first goal of the season by Ben Belmont.

Monte Vista 1, Steele Canyon 1, tie -- After watching their title hopes dashed earlier in the week, the flat Monarchs had to settle for a draw against the last-place Cougars during a steady drizzle at Cougar Canyon.

Steele Canyon midfielder Wayne Lampart opened the scoring midway through the first half when he collected a poor clearing pass and sent a shot just inside the left post from just outside the area.

Each side had good chances to score, but the half ended with no further scoring. In addition, the Monarchs squandered several good scoring chances due to being offside.

In the second half, the Monarchs, which squandered several scoring chances to offsides infractions, finally broke through. In the 62nd minute, defender Chris Villa delivered a long ball behind the Cougars defense and sent Ruben Flores in alone on goal, scoring on a low shot to the right corner.

Monte Vista (3-1-4, 8-8-4) received one last chance, but the final whistle came just after midfielder Alan Dominguez was denied on a breakaway chance. Steele Canyon moves to 0-6-2, 3-9-4.

Wed., Feb. 9
Grossmont 2, El Cajon Valley 1
-- Braves goalie David Delgado pulled up from his goalie position and scored in the 80th minute, but the Foothillers still hung on after building an early lead when a pair of crosses by Al Maganuco lead to goals on headers.

In the first half, Grossmont forward Tim Ferrara nodded home a cross from Maganuco. Paul Burdick followed with a similar goal, with Maganuco's cross coming in the form of a corner kick.

The victory allows the Foothillers an opportunity to gain at least a tie for the league title when they meet El Capitan on Thursday.

Thurs., Feb. 10
Granite Hills 2, Helix 0
-- Backed by solid play from defenders Kayton Nimmo, Matt Smith and Ryan Monty, goalie Thomas Ryan was able to register another shutout, helping the Eagles move within a game of reclaiming the Grossmont South League crown.

Granite Hills (5-0-3 GSL, 12-0-7 overall) now leads second-standing Valhalla by one full game with two contests remaining.

Dustin Mills scored in the first half as a Shaun Silva throw-in was flicked on by Dan Sims, with Mills providing the finishing touch. In the second half, Kyle Hewitt put a ball across the goal which Ben Maypole played on, with Saul Solis finishing for an important insurance goal.

Meanwhile, the Highlanders (3-3-2, 7-8-3) mounted few scoring opportunities, as Josh Sandoval and Dominic Picone provided solid minutes in the midfield for the Eagles.

Wed., Feb. 9
Granite Hills 4, Monte Vista 0
-- Senior goalie Thomas Ryan tossed a first-half shutout, then came on as a field player in the second half and scored the Eagles' fourth goal to move Granite Hills (4-0-3 GSL, 11-0-7 overall) into first place while ending the 6-game unbeaten streak of Monte Vista (3-1-3, 8-8-3).

Ryan scored on a blast off the left post, as Dustin Mills assisted to complete a 5-point performance with three assists and an unassisted goal.

Mills deflected a shot to open the scoring in the 18th minute. Two minutes later, a Mills shot was redirected by senior midfielder Kyle Hewitt, sending the ball off the left post and in for a 2-0 lead.

Also scoring for Granite Hills was Daniel McMillin on a bouncing shot early in the second half. Meanwhile, reserve goalie Ronald "R.J." Smith matched Ryan with a pair of saves to complete the shutout.

Mount Miguel 2, Helix 2, tie -- Highlanders forward Dustin Stern-Garcia scored twice, but when his attempt at the hat trick barely sailed wide, Helix had to settle with a draw against the Matadors.

Trailing 1-0 on a Mount Miguel goal at the quarter-hour, Helix beat the halftime whistle to equalize when senior Angelo Novenario sent a through ball to Stern-Garcia, who beat the keeper with a low shot to the far post.

The Highlanders went ahead just after the break when senior Keith Miller found Stern-Garcia for his second goal of the evening. After several minutes of solid play by each side, Mount Miguel knotted the game up with nine minutes to go.

Stern-Garcia just missed collecting a hat-trick which would have given Helix the win in the final minutes. The sophomore broke through the Matador defense and beat their diving keeper from 12 yards out, but with nothing but open net in front, the ball pushed wide to the left from inside the six.

Sounds of frustration follow series of draws
Monte Vista 1, Valhalla 1 --
Voices became raised, but nothing was decided on or off the field after these teams tied for the second time this season. Sources close to EastCountySports.com reported a volley of verbal exchange between Valhalla coaches and some fans on the Monte Vista side.

Prior to the shouting match, the Norsemen scored early when Brett Johnson collected a punch-out by Monte Vista goalie Eric Leboffe, sending home the rebound just under the crossbar from 18 yards away in the 9th minute.
The Monarchs answered six minutes later when Pelon Lozano's long cross sent Ruben Flores in alone on goal, beating advancing Valhalla goaltender Eddie Aguilar to knot the score.

At times in the second half, the Monarchs showed creativity in their attack with passing between Armando Medina, Angel Bustos, Alan Dominguez, Carlos Sigala, Flores and Lozano. However, the game mostly became a midfield battle, with neither keeper being seriously tested, as the few shots taken by either team were either blocked by the defense or went past the goal. Leboffe finished with 3 saves; no statistics were available for Aguilar.

The draw, coupled with another 1-1 deadlock between Mount Miguel and Granite Hills, maintains Monte Vista's (3-0-3, 8-7-3) hold of the GSL lead.

Fri., Feb. 4
Helix 4, Steele Canyon 2
-- The Highlanders erupted for three goals in the opening 20 minutes, racing to an easy Grossmont South League triumph while keeping the Cougars winless in league play.

Sophomore forward Dustin Stern-Garcia caught goalkeeper Jesse Nunez
off his line just minutes following the opening kickoff. Senior captain Brock Coffey assisted on goal from 18 yards away.

Helix made it 2-0 at the quarter-hous, when senior Keith Miller fed a through ball to streaking senior forward Angelo Novenario, who beat the diving Nunez from just inside the penalty area.

The Scotties added another score just minutes later when Coffey fed a slow rolling free kick to Miller, who slammed it home. Steele Canyon pulled one goal back before the half, but Miller added his second goal of the game 15 minutes into the second half, finishing a Novenario cross for a 4-1 advantage.

Hillers roar back following PKs
Wed., Feb. 2
Grossmont 5, Santana 2
-- Cliff Waller completed a hat trick with a pair of second-half goals, helping the Foothillers overcome a pair of Santana penalty kicks in the opening 40 minutes to dump the Sultans.

Waller scored unassisted in the early going, but the referee blew down a pair of infractions in the box on Grossmont, as Sultans striker Taylor Tomlin converted from the spot both times.

However, the Hillers scored four unanswered times after the intermission, including a pair of goals by Tim Ferrara, while Chris Rangel posted a pair of assists.

Monte Vista claims outright GSL lead
While traditional powers Granite Hills and Valhalla fought to a 1-1 draw, upstart Monte Vista blitzed past Helix, 3-0, moving into first place in the Grossmont South League.

Monte Vista 3, Helix 0 -- The stellar playmaking skills of Carlos Sigala led to assists on all three goals, lifting the surprising Monarchs into sole possession of first place in the Grossmont South League after blanking visiting Helix.

Sigala's helped moved him into the teams lead with eight assists, one more than junior midfielder Ruben Flores. Meanwhile, Monarchs goalkeeper Eric Leboffe made four saves to earn his third shutout of the year.

The Highlanders' best chance came early in the 18th minute, when Keith Miller received a ball 10 yards out to the right of the goal. Leboffe came out and dove to cover the point-blank shot. The rest of the contest belonged to Monte Vista (8-7-2 overall, 3-0-2 GSL).

In the 22nd minute, Sigala set up Alan Dominguez to the right of the Highlanders goal. Dominguez's first shot was blocked by Helix keeper Alex Riggins, but the rebound went right back to Dominguez for a 1-0 lead at the break.

After several strong Monarchs scoring chances in the second half, including chances by Flores, Pelon Lozano and Anthony Campos, Sigala broke through again after sending a long forward pass which bounced over Riggins' head when he came out to collect it at the top of the box. Lozano raced around the keeper and deposited the ball in the back of the net to make it 2-0 in the 60th minute. It was Lozano's fifth goal of the season.

Ten minutes later, Sigala sent a long cross from the right side to the back post where Armando Medina headed home for his club-leading ninth of the campaign, keeping his scoring streak alive through six ballgames.

Granite Hills 1, Valhalla 1, tie -- Jason Dall headed in a throw-in to give the defending GSL champion Norsemen the early lead, but Saul Solis equalized before halftime by knocking in a rebound off a corner kick, keeping the defending CIF champion Eagles (9-0-6, 2-0-2) undefeated through 15 contests.

Granite Hills, with six points in the standings, trails Monte Vista (3-0-2, 8 points) but owns a game in hand following a recent rainout. Valhalla (2-1-2) also has six points but the Norsemen have played an extra contest.

CCPA 4, River Valley 3 -- Trailing 2-1 at the half, the Snow Leopards received second-half goals from junior forward Troy Denner and freshman Anthony Williams to claim a 3-2 lead, only to watch the Center for Creative & Performing Arts answer with a pair of late goals to win at Lakeside Middle School.

For Denner, it was his second goal of the game, also scoring on a penalty kick in the first half for River Valley (2-4-1) in the non-league contest.

Monarchs make GSL a three-team race
Monte Vista 4, Mount Miguel 0
-- Battling through the murk and the mud in sloppy field conditions, the Moanrchs scored twice in each half to remain unbeaten (2-0-2, 7-7-2 overall) through four GSL contests by besting the host Matadors.
Goalkeeper Ken Redmond recorded three saves to earn his second shutout of the season. He was assisted by solid defensive play from Luis Escobosa, Matt Hale, Chris Villa and Brian Woods, keeping Monte Vista in the mix with perennially contenders Granite Hills and Valhalla for the league crown, teams which also entered the day with a loss in league play.
It took only three minutes for the Monarchs to get on the scoreboard when Armando Medina put in a Carlos Sigala rebound off a corner kick. The goal was Medina's team-leading eighth of the year and extended his scoring streak to five games.
In the 20th minute, Pelon Lozano sent Ruben Flores in alone on breakaway, who beat the hard-charging Matadors keeper with a shot to the left side.
In the second half, Mount Miguel (0-4, 3-7-3) opened with several good chances despite the return of the wind and rain. Their best chance came when a wet ball eluded Redmond, but Escobosa, a junior fullback, blocked the ensuing Matadors shot off the goal line.
The Monarchs then put the game away with two goals over the final 10 minutes. First, Eric Leboffe sent a long pass to Flores, who beat two defenders and broke in alone on goal. His shot from 18 yards out beat the keeper, but hit the far post. However, the ball bounced to Lozano, who deposited the ball into an empty net.
In the 79th minute, Omar Trujillo registered his first goal of the season, putting in the rebound of an Alan Dominguez shot off the right post.

Wed., Jan. 26
Grossmont 3, El Capitan 2
-- In a battle of league leaders, the Foothillers secured an early then then held off the Vaqueros to take over sole possession of first in the Grossmont North League.

Tim Ferrara and Adrian Castellanos scored to allow the Hillers (12-5-1, 2-0-0) to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission. Ferraea headed home a perfect cross by Castellanos cross at the quarter-hour mark, then Castellanos scored 10 minutes later on a shot from outside the box.

El Capitan pulled one goal back on a play off an indirect free kick in the box, but Grossmont's Cliff Waller answered with a goal, as Al Maganuco recorded the assist for a 3-1 lead. The Vaqueros (10-5-2, 2-1-0) moved with a goal by scoring with five minutes remaining, yet still suffered their first league setback.

Granite Hills 1, Helix 0 -- Dan McMillin scored the game's lone tally on an assist from Saul Solis, while senior keeper Thomas Ryan posted another shutout to lift the Eagles past the Highlanders.

Monarchs rally from two down to remain undefeated
Wed., Jan. 26
Monte Vista 3, Steele Canyon 2
-- After once trailing 3-0, Pelon Lozano and Eric Leboffe each scored over the final 10 minutes, lifting the Monarchs past the visiting Cougars to remain unbeaten in GSL play.
Lozano, a senior, tied the game with a shot just inside the right post from 8 yards out off an assist from Armando Medina. Leboffe then got the game winner in the 78th minute, sending a shot off the left post from 12 yards. Luis Escobosa was credited with the winning assist.
Steele Canyon built a 2-0 advantage in the first half, including a penalty kick by Wayne Lampart in the 10th minute, sending a solid shot to the upper-right corner. The Cougars scored again in the 24th minute, but the Monarchs responded two minutes later when Medina received a cross from Angel Bustos and beat the Cougars 'keeper to the far post from 15 yards.
For Medina, his goal was a team-leading seventh of the season and four in the last four games.
Ken Redmond replaced Leboffe in goal for the second half and was not seriously tested thanks to solid defense from Chris Villa, Daniel De Leon, Brian Woods and Matthew Hale.

Scotties huge lead is enough to stave Matadors rally
Helix 4, Mount Miguel 3 --

Eight goals, 2 hat tricks can't decide South League fireworks
Helix 4, Steele Canyon 4
-- Despite hat tricks by members from both teams Wednesday (Jan. 19), each side came away with a disappointing draw after Helix gave away a 3-0 lead in the first half, while Steele Canyon allowed a late goal after scoring four straight times to move in front.

It was all Highlanders in the first half, when senior forward Angelo Novenario twice found the back of the net of one-on-one chances with the Cougars' keeper.

The Highlanders could not hold a 3-1 halftime advantage allowing the Cougars to claw back into the match and claim a 4-4 draw. Helix senior forward Angelo Novenario found the back of the net twice in the first half off a pair of one on one chances with the Steel Canyon keeper. Sophomore Dustin Stern Garcia and senior Oscar De La Torre assisted on the Novenario goals.

The Scotties then went up 3-0 when a free kick by sophomore Adam Shutts found the head of fellow sophomore Jason Sanchez in the penalty area.

However, Steele Canyon started to claw back. finding some life late in the half by pulling back a goal on a well-placed, 20-yard free kick by Wayne Lampart.

Lampart kept the Cougars on fire by scoring twice more to equalize to complete the hat trick, then Matt Gillespie scored for a 4-3 lead. However, Novenario completed his hat trick by converting a penalty kick in the final minutes to cap the wild affair.

Eagles make presence felt in Grossmont Classic final
East County Sports.com

Granite Hills 0, Carlsbad 0 (GH on PKs 3-1) -- Whether one is surprised or not, the formula continues to ring true: In order to capture the CIF soccer title, the road -- again -- runs through Granite Hills.

Despite the loss of a rash of standout players from the 2004 state championship team, the Eagles proved they are the team to beat yet again after capturing the 26th annual Grossmont Holiday Classic after staving off Carlsbad on penalty kicks in Wednesday's (Dec. 22) Premier Division finale.

The teams played to a scoreless draw, then Granite Hills goalkeeper Thomas Ryan, the tournament MVP, allowed just one goal on four Lancers shots to claim the shootout.

Ryan registered seven saves, including one easy stop in overtime for the shutout.

The Eagles are now 8-0-2 this season and are the official team to beat as the team seeks a fifth consecutive CIF Division I crown.

"Sure, a lot of people thought we were iffy after losing so many good players like Jason Miller, Sean Pepin and Yoshi (Alex Yoshinaga)," explained Ryan. "They won on heart and a lot of key players."

"But just like the previous four teams, we win on heart, too."
In a classic battle, both sides created numerous scoring situations, only to have the opponent's defense step up to resist the pressure. The closest either team came to finding the net came late in regulation, when the Eagles had a hard shot from the wing hit the side netting, while another loose ball was cleared by Carlsbad keeper from near its goal line.

"It was soccer as you like it," noted Eagles coach Sami Nedjar, the reigning coach of the year for both high school soccer and regionally in club soccer. "Both teams went up-and-down the field, but it felt like Ryan was the difference."

In the shootout, both teams scored on their first opportunities, including a goal by the Eagles' Josh Sandoval. But then Ryan dived to his left for his first stop, with Matt Smith countering for a 2-1 lead, then Ryan went right for yet another show-stopping save, with Kyle Hewitt converting for a 3-1 lead.

Although slated for five rounds, when the fourth Lancers shot sailed over the top, Granite Hills mathematically earned the trophy needing only 3.5 rounds.

"When you see how we have filled in for the players we've lost, there's no doubt we'll be in the running once again," added Ryan, a senior coming off a season when he was tabbed to the All-County team. Kyle's our playmaker in the middle who can push up the field, Matt is solid in front of me on defense, and although he's been hurt, Saul Solis can finish (score)."

"And we have some new players, too, like Adam Mooney, who is really strong and will get a lot of assists with his long throw-ins. We call him 'Red Rocket.' "
It was the third straight Grossmont Tournament finals appearance for the Eagles, splitting the contests. They lost to Montgomery in 2001 semis, then began a two-year, 66-game unbeaten streak which was snapped in the 2003 finale to St. Augustine.

Granite Hills downed Carlsbad in pool play this season, 1-0, but the Lancers still managed to come through to reach the title match after downing St. Augustine in the semifinals to prevent a finals rematch.

Free kicks -- Ryan is considering offers from Cal Poly Pomona and Notre Dame de Namur, the school where former Eagles Anthony Putrus and Mike Whittaker currently play. Both Argonauts were named to the NCAA All Region II First Team last month.

Putrus, a sophomore defender, had a strong second season as he was a large part of the NDNU defense which allowed only 164 shots all season. It was his first time named to the All Region squad.

Whittaker, a senior goalie, received his second All Region nomination after helping the Argos to its seventh Cal Pac Conference championship and advancing to the Region II semifinals. Whittaker, finished with a 1.04 goal against average and 21 goals scored against for NDNU (17-5-2).

Eagles, Saints again possible in final
Mon., Dec. 20
Granite Hills 3, Grossmont 2 --
After drawing 3-all in pool play, another score-fest ensued between these teams Monday (Dec. 20), as the Eagles rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the second half to slip past the Foothillers in the semifinals of the 26th annual Grossmont Holiday Classic.

Kyle Hewitt scored his second goal of the contest on a penalty kick to tie the contest, then Jesse Fulcher delivered the game-winner for the undefeated Eagles (6-0-2).

Following an early Hewitt for a 1-0 halftime lead, Grossmont got even on Cliff Waller's unassisted goal, then temporarily went in front when Al Maganuco slammed home a pass from Tim Ferrara.

Grossmont reached the final four following a 3-2 verdict over Montgomery in the quarterfinals, as Ferrara scored twice, then Anton Burman scored unassisted on the game-winner to down the Aztecs.

Granite Hills advances to Wednesday's 5 p.m. finale against the winner of the late contest between St. Augustine and Carlsbad. Should Saints win, it would bring a rematch of the 2003 Premiere Division final won by St. Augustine, which snapped the CIF record 66-game unbeaten streak of the Eagles.

Eagles advance to Grossmont semis
Sat., Dec. 18
Granite Hills 3, Orange Glen 2
-- The improving Patriots made their bid for a top ten berth, but the Eagles again preveiled behind a pair of goals by senior Kyle Hewitt in this Grossmont Holiday Classic pool-play contest.

Granite Hills 1, West Hills 0 -- Shaun Silva scored the game's lone goal, while Thomas Ryan registered his four shutout of the season, as Granite Hills downed the Wolf Pack in the quarterfinals of the Grossmont Holiday Classic.

The undefeated Eagles (6-0-2) advance to Monday's semifinals.

Westview 2, Monte Vista 0 -- The undefeated Wolverines (5-0-1) made a statement to be included in next week's debut release of the county rankings after overwhelming the Monarchs in the final pool play contest of the Grossmont Holiday Classic. The match was held at Rancho Buena Vista High.

The rough-and-tumble, physical affair was marred by 12 bookings, including a red card to each side, but Westview controlled the ball throughout, out-shooting Monte Vista, 26-1, to control the scoreboard behind a goal and an assist from Bryan Higgs.

At the 34th minute, Higgs found net from 25 yards out to open the scoring, assisted by Taylor Adams. Higgs then stole the ball in the 50th minute, feeding the ball to Alex Zdvorak for another goal.

A third goal might have been scored had not Monte Vista midfielder Angel Bustos blocked the shot on the line. Senior goalie Ken Redmond finished the final 15 minutes of the game and blocked four shots for the Monarchs (3-6-0). Meanwhile, Thomas Grover and Eric Davison combined on the shutout for Westview.

With the victory, the Wolverines advanced to the afternoon quarterfinals, but fell to another undefeated side, when Rancho Buena Vista (7-0-1) thumped Westview (5-1-1), 3-0.

Wed., Dec. 15
Granite Hills 2, El Cajon Valley 0 -
- Saul Solis, who scored the championship-clinching goal in overtime to defeat La Costa Canyon for the Eagles' fourth consecutive SDCIF Division I title last spring, scored his first goal of the season to lead Granite Hills past the Braves. The Eagles (4-0-1) again own the best record in the East County in the early going.
Solis scored off a pass from Josh Sandoval gave the Eagles a 2-0 halftime lead. Senior Weston Smith opened the scoring by knocking home a feed from Kyle Hewitt, while goalie Thomas Ryan had a quiet afternoon in posting the shutout.
Monte Vista 2, West Hills 0
-- Monarchs midfielder Armando Medina recorded a goal in each half to lead the visitors to a 2-0 victory over the Wolf Pack.
Medina drilled a half-volley of a long cross from Ruben Flores into the net in the 32nd minute, then prevented a West Hills comeback in the 66th minute, when he headed home a goal off an assist from Carlos Sigala.
The match was the second straight shutout for the Monarchs. Goalkeeper Eric Leboffe faced 13 shots and made 7 saves before Ken Redmond finished off the final two minutes after Leboffe was removed due to injury.
Christian 2, Sante Fe Christian 1
-- The Patriots bounced off the mat for its first triumph in six starts, downing their fellow Division IV foe on the road. Christian (1-3-2) scored both goals in the first half, as Josh May scored off an assist from Travis Hunter, then the pair reversed roles as Hunter scored off a feed from May.

Grossmont 6, Steele Canyon 0 -- The Foothillers continue to rank as the highest-scoring team in East County, rolling a 6-spot on the Cougars in this Grossmont Conference crossover contest. Tim Ferrara scored a pair of second-half goals, while goalie Dennis MacIsaac recorded three saves for the shutout of the previously undefeated Cougars.
Al Maganuco opened the scoring by beating his defender down the left side, scoring an unassisted goal, then Taylor Lindblom scored off a Paul Burdick pass for a 2-0 halftime lead.
Ferrara then scored twice for a 4-0 advantage, with Maganuco and Lautaro Gianni assisting on each respective goal. Anton Burman made it 5-0 off a pass by Adrian Castellanos, who then scored his own goal with an assist by Chis Rangel.
The Foothillers now own the best record among North League teams at 6-2-0, registering 20 goals in eight contests (2.50/game). Steele Canyon fell to 2-1-1.
Santana 2, Helix 1
-- The hardluck Highlanders saw a pair of second-half goals erased on offsides calls, then Santana scored in the final minutes to finally break the tie and take a 2-1 decision.
Sophomore forward Dustin Stern-Garcia gave Helix (2-2-1) the lead in the 25th minute, heading home a throw-in by senior midfielder Keith Miller. In the second half, Santana (4-1-0) converted a corner kick opportunity to tie the game, then got the game winner on a goalie error.
No information on the Sultans goals were reported by their coaching staff.

Sat., Dec. 11
Grossmont 3, Valhalla 1 -
Taylor Lindblom recorded a goal and an assist, propelling the Foothillers past the slipping Norsemen. Lindblom opened the scoring, with Adrian Castellanos assisting, but Valhalla booted home a penalty kick to knot the score at the half. The rest of the game belonged to Grossmont, as sophomore Anton Burman scored on a rebound after a drive from Al Maganuco smacked the crossbar, then Adrian Castellanos scored off a Lindblom pass.
Grossmont 3, Eastlake 1 -
The Titans scored an early goal, but the Foothillers (5-2) roared back behind a pair of goals by Tim Ferrara. With Bobby Schmidt assisting both times, Ferrara completed a three-point effort with an assist on a second-half tally by Taylor Lindblom.
St. Augustine 4, Helix 1
- The Saints netted two goals in the opening five minutes and went ahead by three in the closing moment of the first half. Senior Keith Miller provided the lone score for the Scotties off a penalty kick 10 minutes into the second half, before Saints sophomore Nick Iafe slotted home a goal in the final minutes.
Helix 4, San Marcos 2
- Dustin Stern-Garcia scored a pair of early goals, powering the Highlanders in a Grossmont Holiday Tournament contest. The sophomore scored in the 2nd and 9th minutes, with senior Angelo Novenario slotting a shot to the far post for a 3-1 halftime lead. Both teams added scores in the second half with Helix's final tally coming of the foot of sophomore midfielder Jason Sanchez.

Monte Vista 3, Otay Ranch 0 -- Eric Leborre and Ken Redmond recorded the first shutout of the season for the Monarchs to saddle the Mustangs. Leborre made a pair of first-half saves

Tue., Dec. 7

Granite Hills 3, Chula Vista 0 -- Following a scoreless first half, the Eagles (2-0) turned up the heat with three second-half goals to put away the Spartans (1-3).

Josh Sandoval started the barrage when he served a free kick into the box, where Dan McMillin headed the ball across the face of the goal to Kyle Hewitt for the easy finish to open the scoring.

McMillin and Hewitt also combined on the next goal, with McMillin finishing it off, then the Eagles capped the outburst when Jesse Fulcher slotted home a penalty kick. Senior goalie Thomas Ryan was credited with three saves for the shutout.

Grossmont 2, Mira Mesa 0 -- Thomas O'laughlin registered five saves to collect the shutout, as the Foothillers (3-2) blanked the Marauders to extend their winning streak to three games.

The Hillers scored in each half, as Taylor Lindblom found the net off an assist by Brandon Ciaccio, then Al Maganuco scored on a penalty kick after being taking down in the box. However, he needed to take "shot from the mark" twice because his first attempt came before the whistle.

Mon., Dec. 6
Hilltop 3, Monte Vista 2 -
- Alex Parker, a member of the U.S. Olympic Development Program, scored the tie-breaking goal in the final minutes, lifting the Lancers past the Monarchs (2-3) in the semifinals of the Coronado Tournament. Parker's perfect kick deflected off the left goal post and into the net, capping a furious comeback by Hilltop.

Midfielder Eric Leboffe's penalty kick goal gave the Monarchs a 2-1 lead, but Hilltop finally tied it with five minutes to go after Monte Vista defenders Brian Woods and Carlos Sigala blocked shots and cleared moments earlier.

After Hilltop took the early lead, Ruben Flores equalized in the 37th minute, beating the keeper from close range to the right side following a nice cross by Sigala.

Q's put Monarchs in pressure cooker
EastCountySports.com

Sat., Dec. 4
Serra 2, Monte Vista 1
-- A second-half goal and persistent pressure were not enough for the Monarchs to get past the Conquistadors in a Coronado Tournament pool-play game.
Serra took early advantage of some confusion between goalkeeper Ken Redmond and defender Chris Villa. Before they could sort it out, a Q's forward poked the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead. From then on, it was all Monte Vista, as the Monarchs pounded the Serra goal with a dozen shots and earned six corner kicks, but the half ended 1-0.
In the second half, the Monarchs picked up where they left off, but soon found themselves behind 2-0 when a 20-yard Serra free kick found the net. However, Pelon Lozano, who had been denied twice on headers in the first half, headed in a cross from Ruben Flores to break the shutout in the 65th minute.
The Monarchs (2-2) frantically tried to get the equalizer, but were frustrated by a tough Serra defense after another goal on a header was called back due to goalie interference, a shot hit the crossbar, and still another shot that was rolling towards an open net was inadvertently kicked out by a Monarchs player.
Fri., Dec. 3
Oceanside 2, Monte Vista 0
-- The Pirates parlayed an early second-half penalty kick and an outnumbered attack goal to hand Monte Vista its first setback of the season.
After a scoreless first half, Monarchs defender Angel Bustos was called for a foul in the penalty area, a call disputed by coach Saul Hernandez. The ensuing penalty kick by Jamel Wallace beat the dive of Monte Vista goalie Kenneth Redmond to the lower right corner. Ten minutes later, an open shot from 15 yards out put the game out of reach.
The first half saw both teams squander a handful of scoring chances, as both defenses were able to break up most attacks before shots were taken. Monarchs defender Chris Villa alone accounted for several sliding tackles that cleanly separated the ball from several Pirates players. Later on, Monte Vista co-captain Ruben Flores showed off his ball skills in making several runs from his midfield position. Armando Medina also pushed the attack from the midfield, but the Monarchs could not find net for the first time this year.

Granite Hills 1, Fallbrook 0 -
In a rematch of last year's San Diego CIF Division I semifinal, Granite Hills once again defeated Fallbrook 1-0 in the Eagles' season opener. The Eagles are the four-time defending Division I champions.

In an end to end match, both teams created some fine attacks. When Fallbrook went on the break, it was up to Kayton Nimmo, Ryan Monty and Matt Smith to shut them down.

The midfield of Saul Solis, Dustin Mills, Josh Sandoval, Gavin Robertson, Dan Sims and Kyle Hewitt did their best to keep the Warriors at bay.

With one minute left in the first half, Granite Hills was awarded a free kick on the left flank. Hewitt served it in and Nimmo got a piece of it. The ball flew in the path of Sandoval who hit a fine side volley to put the Eagles into the lead.

The second half saw both teams pick up their play and the Warriors (1-1) created several good chances. Granite Hills keeper Thomas Ryan made 3 of his 5 saves in the second half as the Eagles completed the shutout.

Oceanside 2, Monte Vista 0 -- Pirates forward Jamel Wallace opened the scoring, followed by German Esquivel goal off an assist from Cesar Cortez. Jose Herrera was instrumental in leading the defense of Oceanside (1-0), handing the Monarchs their first loss in three starts.

Christian 1, El Cajon Valley 1 -- Mao Asakawa scored the game-tieing goal for the Patriots (0-0-1), extending the Braves winless streak to three games (0-2-1).

THURS. DEC. 2
Helix 2, Scripps Ranch 2 -
Helix's Angelo Novenario got the Scotties rolling in the fourth minute with a shot that skimmed under the crossbar from just inside the 18
yard line. Senior midfielder Keith Miller had the assist. The Highlanders went up 2-0 moments later when sophomore Dustin Stern-Garcia scored his third goal in two games also from a Miller assist.

Scripps Ranch pulled within one just before halftime with a low shot inside the right post under sliding Helix sophomore defender Jade Molde. Scripps Ranch then equalized mid way through the second half with a well-timed cross and finish past the reach of Helix goalkeeper Nick Crivello.

Helix had a chance to go ahead near the end of the game when Keith Miller's free kick found Helix captain Brock Coffey just outside the goal area. Coffey's header attempt was pulled out of the air by the Scripps Ranch keeper.

WED., DEC. 1
Monte Vista 2, Mar Vista 1 -
A smart pass by Armando Medina allowed Martin Navarro to score a breakaway goal in the second half, helping the Monarchs rally from an early deficit to stun the Mariners.

Navarro was also part of a wild shooting sequence which led to the opening goal.

On a counter-attack, defender Matt Hale sent Eric Leboffe alone on a breakaway from 30 yards out, but his shot was blocked by the Mar Vista goalie. Navarro came upon the loose ball, but his rebound drilled off the goal post.

Then the mad scramble started.

With the Mariners unable to clear, the ball landed at the feet of Pelon Lozano, but his shot was stopped and bounded to Leboffe, the Monarchs' team captain, who finally deposited the rebound -- the fourth shot of the sequence -- to knot the game at 1-all.

Both teams had chances afterward, but Monte Vista goalie Kenneth Redmond made five saves, including some from close range, for the victory.

Tue., Nov. 30
Helix 3, Mira Mesa 2
-- Dustin Stern-Garcia scored a pair of first half goals, then assisted on what turned out to be the game-winning goal by Keith Miller, powering the Highlanders past the visiting Marauders.

Stern-Garcia, a sophomore forward, found Miller open for an 18-yard blast -- the lone goal of the second half, as the Scotties defense blanked Mira Mesa over the final 60 minutes after allowing an early breakaway to open the scoring and a penalty kick.

The back was headed by captain Brock Coffey and returning letterman Bret Milbourn -- both seniors -- aided by sophomores Jade Molde and Adam Shutts, earning goalkeeper Nick Crivello his first varsity victory.

Steele Canyon 2, El Cajon Valley 1 -- Julio Mauricio registered a goal and an assist to mount a 2-0 halftime lead, then the host Cougars held on to down the Braves in a darkness-shortened contest.
Mauricio scored off a Vince Faraciano pass in the 9th minute, then assisted on a Alfredo Ortega goal in the 19th minute.
El Cajon Valley freshman Joel Perez stole the ball from a Steele Canyon fullback and scored on a breakaway seven minutes into the second half, but the game was called eight minutes later after the sun had set and with no lights available at the district's newest high school.

Navarro scores twice to lift Monarchs
in season-opening tournament win
CORONADO -- Junior forward Martin Navarro scored a pair of second half goals to snap a 1-1 tie, powering Monte Vista High to a 4-2 triumph over Mission Bay in Monday's (Nov. 29) first-round of the Coronado Tournament. It was the season opener for both sides.
Navarro took a feed from junior midfielder Ruben Flores, then beat the Buccaneer goalkeeper from 10 yards out. A few minutes later, Navarro headed home an insurance goal, nodding home a cross from the left side by junior midfielder Armando Medina.
Senior middie Eric Leboffe opened the scoring in the 6th minute on a 20-yard blast to the upper-right corner of the net, with senior forward Alberto "Pelon" Lozano assisting, only to see Mission Bay equalize 20 minutes later on a Luis Hernandez goal.
However, Leboffe would later add an important assist. After Mission Bay moved to within 3-2 when senior Javier Elizararraz -- the team's leading scorer last season -- hit the back of the net, Leboffe found sophomore Carlos Sigala -- another Monarchs mifdielder -- for his first varsity goal.
Monte Vista goalie Kenneth Redmond faced seven shots to earn the victory, aided by a defensive unit which cleared away numerous other opportunities, including strong play from fullbacks Matt Hale, Chris Villa, and Brian Woods, and Juniors Angel Bustos, Luis Escobosa and Felipe Avila.

Mount Carmel 3, Grossmont 0 -- After turning in a strong defensive performance in the first-half, the wheels fell off over the final 40 minutes, as the visiting Sundevils took this Premier Division opener of the Coronado Tournament
Moments after Mount Carmel goalie Todd Holmes robbed a Hiller on a point-blank shot in the 56th minute, Craig love headed home a centering pass from Hugo Voga to open the scoring. Tony Ortega and Brandon Davis then assisted on each other's goals following defensive breakdowns, as Ortega scored on a breakaway in the 61st minute, then Davis took an Ortega pass from midfield to score on a break eight minutes later.

Santana 2, La Jolla Country Day 0 -- Steven Harper posted four saves for the shutout, backing the Sultans to a Gold Division pool-play win in the Coronado Tournament.
