END OF REGULAR SEASON
(09-29-01)

2002 EAST COUNTY JV-FROSH FOOTBALL - RESULTS

FROSH
Monte Vista Statistics

The defense set a freshman record with 5 shutouts. The starting defense did
not allow a point over the last 15 quarters they played. They allowed only
89 points this season and intercepted 16 passes. David Murgia had 3 picks
that were all returned for TD's. QB Lance Mendiola (38-84-758-7TD's-2INT's) set the following passing records: yards in a season with 758, yards in one game with 222 vs. Santana, TD passes in a game with 3 vs. Santana, and completed 45% of his passes. WR Theo Sharp caught 16 balls and set records for total yards (479) and averaged 29.9 yards per catch, another freshman record. The leading rushers were Brandon Williamson (70-775-12TD's), Jules Dawson (78-602-6TD's), and Drew Crane (51-411-5TD's).

Fri. - Nov. 15
JUNIOR VARSITY

Helix 62, Monte Vista 12
Highlights:
The Highlanders played hard on both sides of the football to
take the 2002 JV Grossmont South League championship. Brandon Chambers of Helix caught 4 passes, 1 for a TD and also got a reverse for a TD. On the defensive side there were 2 TDS from fumble recoveries by Patrick Greene and Derell Lewis. Ralph Brice and Carlos Rojas led the Helix defense in tackles with an average of 10.

Valhalla 55, Granite Hills 0
Highlights:
Brandon Morrow scored two TDs, as did Rick Scavia. Bobby Decker scored on a 40 yard pass from Willis Locke. Locke also hit Brennan Baum and Ricky Martin with touchdown tosses. Tommy McClain added another TD on the ground. The Norsemen offensive line repeatedly opened huge holes to spur its running game. Valhalla's defense was stifling. Ken Batten recovered two Eagle fumbles, Ryan Parks recovered two more, and Ronnie Schwandt blocked an Eagle punt. James Connelly had a bone-jarring sack in the 2nd quarter, forcing a fumble that was recovered by teammate Zack Shrover. Center Jimmy Vish, who took over the kicking duties after McClain was injured a few games back, got a lot of extra point practice, and was good on 7 of 8 PAT's. The Norsemen ended their season with an 8-2 record, and 5-1 in league, with their lone league loss to Helix in the final seconds of that game.

Thur. - Nov. 14
FROSH

Monte Vista 14, Helix 0
Highlights:
The Monarchs (9-1) won their third league title in a row with a decisive victory over the always tough Highlanders. The Monarch defense proved once again that it is the most dominant force in the East County as they recorded a school record 5th shutout this season and third in a row. Helix rushed 21 times for 55 yards and had three crucial turnovers. With Helix threatening to score early in the first quarter, DE Greg Simmons stole an errant pitch out of the air and raced 50 yards. Four plays later, Brandon Williamson found the end zone with a spectacular 29-yard cutback run. The Monarchs turned to the Double Wing in the second half and ate up the clock. Time-consuming drives and a tough defense limited the Highlanders offense to only 9 plays and 21 yards in the second half. The Monarchs offense rushed 32 times for 246 yards. They were led by Brandon Williamson (10-79-1) and Jules Dawson (10-79).

Valhalla 52, Granite Hills 32
Highlights:
Mike Howard scored 4 touchdowns and rushed for 236 yards, and Justin Hinton scored twice and rushed for 156 yards as Valhalla rolled to a 52-32 season finale win over a scrappy Eagle team. Valhalla gained 547 yards in offense.

Fri. - Nov. 8
JUNIOR VARSITY

Valhalla 31, Monte Vista 0
Highlights:
Valhalla freshman Garen Demry scored all 5 TDs for the Norsemen. Valhalla forced 7 turnovers in recording the shutout.

Helix 34, Mount Miguel 18
Highlights:
The Highlanders, who led 21-18 at halftime, were paced by Kevin Smith's 3 TDs. Carlos Rojas and Talite Fia led the Helix defense, which shut out the Matadors in the second half. Javier Brown averaged 6 yards per carry for Mount Miguel. Helix can wrap up the Grossmont South League championship if they beat Monte Vista next Friday (Nov. 15) at 4:30 p.m. in La Mesa.

Other scores:
Grossmont 42, West Hills 26

Thurs. - Nov. 7
FROSH

Monte Vista 6, Valhalla 0
Highlights:
The Monarchs narrowly escaped with a win over the Norsemen. Lance Mendiola threw a pass to HB Brandon Williamson who just tipped it as it fell to the ground. But because the pass was backwards, it was a live ball and Brandon scooped it up and ran 34 yards for the game-winning TD with just seconds to go. The Monarch defense recorded their 4th shutout of the season and made a
goal line stand late in the third quarter. The Monarchs rushed 34 times for 234 yards, but couldn't find the end zone as Valhalla fiercely defended. Monte Vista hosts Helix for the Grossmont South League Championship next Thursday (Nov. 14) at 5:15 p.m.

West Hills 29, Grossmont 20
Notable: Jeffery Waters ran for 3 TDs and a 2-point conversion for Grossmont (7-1, 2-1).Wolf Pack handed Foothillers their first loss in 8 games.
