Sultans' reserves get the start, help crush
Julian early

SANTEE - Santana coach WADE VICKERY tried a new wrinkle in Friday's
(Dec. 26) opening round of the Santana Horsman Christmas Classic.
"We started all of our non-starters," he said. The results
were similar, as the Sultans grounded the Julian Eagles 18-2 in
the first quarter and never looked back before settling for a
75-28 victory.
HEATHER THOMAS, ROBIN APPLEBY and JORDAN FRANEY scored 12 points
apiece as the Sultans cruised to their 8th win in 10 starts.
"The first group we started played about four minutes, and
then we rotated two even team throughout the game," Vickery
said.
AMIE LEACH latched onto 8 rebounds, while MARGUEAUX BASS logged
5 assists and SHAE BASS handed out 4 scoring passes. Appleby and
Franey pilfered 3 passes apiece.
EL CAPITAN 62, HILLTOP 10 - The Vaqueros came close to
spinning a shutout in Friday's (Dec. 26) opening round of the
Santana Horsman Christmas Classic.
After building a 23-0 lead after one quarter, the Vaqueros (8-1)
gradually extended their advantage each quarter as they proved
that they are one of the top teams in San Diego County.
HEATHER MOLZEN led El Capitan's victory parade with 21 points
and 19 rebounds. ALLISON DUFFY added 20 points, 8 rebounds and
6 steals.
Half of Hilltop's miniscule scoring total came in the final five
minutes.
El Capitan coach DARIN CURTIS said that Molzen and Duffy sat out
half the game. The coach heaped accolades on sophomore guard LISA
WILKINS for her play in a reserve role. Curtis also praised freshmen
VALERIE LOGEL and ASHLEY ALDERTON.
VALHALLA 50, MAR VISTA 28 - Despite only having five players
available in the 1st quarter for disciplinary reasons, Valhalla
cruised to an easy first round win in Friday's (Dec. 26) Santana's
Christmas Classic.
ADRIANA MALONE, ANGEL BURCH, and LAUREN SHEPPARD buried the Mar
Vista zone with a barrage of outside jumpers all night.
After leaping out to an 11-2 start, Mar Vista scored the final
6 points of the period to close the gap to 3 points. The second
quarter was all Norsemen though as Valhalla went on a 16-2 run,
and never looked back.
Malone finished with 17 points, including three treys. Burch rolled
a double-double of 10 points and 10 assists to go with 5 steals
and a pair of treys.
Sheppard chipped in with 10 points and 4 rebounds,
while CHELSEA KITCHENS rang up 9 points and 11 rebounds.
MOUNT MIGUEL 64, MORSE 27 - KAYLA HENRY scored 16
points and grabbed 4 rebounds Friday (Dec. 26) as the Matadors
(8-3) tamed the Tigers in the 1st round of the Santana Horsman
Christmas Classic.
Sophomore MELODY CLAYTON added 12 points for the Matadors, while
junior GENEVIEVE COSTELLO chimed in with a dozen points, 7 assists
and 4 steals.
RAMONA 54, HELIX 41 - The Highlanders fell behind
12-4 in the 1st quarter and eventually trailed 32-14 at intermission
of Friday's (Dec. 26) Santana Tournament 1st round game.
CHASITY TOILOLO paced Helix (4-3) with 13 points and 9 rebounds,
while DIANA LEASAU chipped in 10 points and 4 steals.
WESTVIEW 64, GROSSMONT 49 - SAMANTHA MOHAN's career
high 25 points weren't enough to overcome the gritty girls of
Westview in Friday's (Dec. 26) opening round action of the Granite
Hills Sportland Festival as the Foothillers (6-6) came up short.
Grossmont's 3-point specialist senior LAURA FELICE canned three
deep ones and added 11 points to the Foothillers cause. BREE HEMINGWAY
chipped in with 6 points and 8 rebounds, while senior ANNIE GONZALES
scored 4 and newcomer, freshman KENDRA MYERS, scored her 1st career
varsity basket on a long 3 pointer.
WEST HILLS 45, CHRISTIAN 34 - Playing at 9
a.m. the day after Christmas doesn't bring out the best in most
athletes, and it certainly didn't in the case of these two teams.
Vying in the 1st round of the Montgomery Aztec Holiday Invitational,
the two clubs staggered through three quarters with the Patriots
holding a 29-27 lead. The 4th quarter, however, belonged to the
Wolf Pack (6-5), which earned an 18-5 scoring edge and the victory.
Freshman MUAAU NADERHOFF paced the Pack with a double-double of
11 points and 11 rebounds and 3 blocks, while teammate AIME CORDEIRO
chalked up 11 points and 5 steals.
Junior DANIELLE EDMONDSON, who scored half of her 10 points in
the decisive 4th quarter, also cleared 4 rebounds for West Hills.
Naderhoff and Cordeiro each netted 5 of their points in the fateful
4th.
RACHEL EDELEN (11 points), KATIE GERLEK (11 points) and JAIME
RAY (10 points) led upstart Christian (4-6), which was playing
without two starters.
GRANITE HILLS 64, CALEXICO 17 - Freshman MORGAN SABALA
scored a game-high 16 points as the Eagles (7-3) chewed up the
visiting Bulldogs in Friday's (Dec. 26) opening round of the Granite
Hills Sportland Festival.
The already short-handed Eagles thought they lost senior AMY HOYT
for the season when she went down with an ankle injury in the
4th quarter. At first it was feared that Hoyt had a broken ankle,
which would have finished her high school career. X-Rays, however,
revealed she had merely suffered a sprain and most likely will
miss only the next two weeks.
"That's a relief," Granite Hills coach JAY ROWLETT understated.
JEANNIE CASE added 11 points and MARNESHA HALL landed 10 for the
Eagles.
CENTRAL UNION 54, EL CAJON VALLEY 36 - Junior MICHELLE
THOMPSON coined a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds for
El Cajon Valley (2-4) in Friday's (Dec. 26) opening round of the
Granite Hills Sportland Festival.
Thompson, who received the Sportsmans Award for the Francis Parker
Tournament last week, nailed a pair of 3-pointers, one less than
TYNISHA SMITH, who totaled 9 points against Central Union.
Senior TALA KOSA added 8 points and 4 rebounds for the Braves.
MIRA MESA 61, MONTE VISTA 33 - No report.

Vaqueros take down El Camino to capture
Granite Hills Invitational
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - El Capitan coach DARIN CURTIS doesn't consider
his Vaqueros to be the best team in town. But he sure should believe
his crew to be of Top 10, if not Top 5 quality. Led by HEATHER
MOLZEN's 20 points and 12 rebounds, the Vaqueros whipped El Camino
57-49 in Saturday's (Dec.20) championship game of the Granite
Hills Invitational.
"San Diego and La Jolla Country Day are the top two teams
in the county," Curtis said. "Then there are about 10
of us who are vying for that next spot."
The Vaqueros (7-1) relied on their accuracy from the free throw
line, connecting on 18 of 19 free throws.
ALISSA UNDEN was 10-for-10 from the free throw line and also clicked
on a pair of 3-pointers to finish with 16 points.
ALLISON DUFFY chipped in with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while
logging 6 steals.
Curtis praised sophomore MORGAN CRAIG who turned in a dynamic
defensive performance against El Camino track star Taranda Diego.
"Morgan was so tight on her that she couldn't even see the
basket," Curtis said. "They could never get their offense
going."
SANTANA 62, KEARNY 61 - Trailing through out the
second half of Saturday's (Dec. 20) third place game of Saturday's
(Dec.20) Granite Hills Invitational, the Sultans (7-2) pulled
out a victory when ROBIN APPLEBY sank the game-winner off an out-of-bounds
play with 5 seconds remaining.
JORDAN FRANEY enjoyed her finest night of the season with 25 points
and 17 rebounds for Santana. SHAE BASS contributed 14 points,
while MARGEAUX BASS added 9 assists and 5 steals.
Shae Bass saved 9 of her points for the 4th quarter, while Franey
netted 5 as Santana outscored the Komets 22-18 in the final 8-minute
stretch.
"This was a very tough tournament," Santana coach WADE
VICKERY said. I'm very pleased to go 3-1."
SAN DIEGUITO 38, CHRISTIAN 34 - After defeating the
host Mustangs by 14 points two days earlier, the visiting Patriots
(4-5) fell short Saturday (Dec.20) when San Dieguito threw up
a combination of defenses including box-and-one, along with triangle-and-two
to offset Christian's outside scoring threat.
Once again, the ever consistent RACHEL EDELEN canned 12 points
and HOLLY ERICKSON added 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for
Christian, which could not generate any scoring from the perimeter.
CHRISTIAN 41, TRI CITY CHRISTIAN 27 - RACHEL EDELEN
scored 16 points based on 6-for-11 shooting from the field and
4-for-6 shooting from the foul line as the Patriots qualified
for the San Dieguito Tournament championship game.
GROSSMONT 50, CLAIREMONT 22 - LAURA FELICE canned
8 of 20 shots, including a trio of 3-pointers for 19 points as
the Foothillers (6-5) snapped a four-game losing streak by clobbering
the Chieftains in Saturday's (Dec. 20) Granite Hills Invitational.
SAM MOHAN added 11 points, while BREE HEMINGWAY hauled down 10
rebounds for Grossmont. Felice also garnered 4 steals.
The Hillers broke the game open with a 34-7 rush in the middle
two quarters. Felice hit consecutive threes and 2s to start the
second quarter with a 13-0 run.
"Even in the (7-7) first quarter it was helter skelter,"
Grossmont coach WALLEY YEAKLE said. "We had ceiling tiles
(in the Granite Hills gym) falling in warm-ups."
It's been that kind of year for Grossmont.
MONTE VISTA 51, LA JOLLA 41 - It was all about balance
for the Monarchs (7-3) in Saturday's (Dec.20) Coronado Round Robin
Tournament contest as four Monte Vista starters reached double
scoring digits against the Vikings.
TANISHA SHELLEY (14 points, 3 steals), ASHLEY MILLER (13 points,
4 assists, 3 steals), TASHANA HOWELL (12 points, 5 rebounds) and
SHALIA BOHANNON (11 points, 4 steals, 3 assists, 4 rebounds) carried
the torch for the overlooked Monarchs.
Monte Vista used a middle quarters rush of 35-17 to turn this
game into a victory.
UNIVERSITY CITY 39, VALHALLA 32 - Norsemen guard
ANGEL BURCH canned a quartet of 3-pointers on her way to
a 16-point finish, but Valhalla had little else in the way of
offense Saturday (Dec.20) as the Centurions claimed victory in
the Granite Hills Invitational finale.
"Lack of offense allowed this game to be an upset in my opinion,"
Valhalla coach ROBERT WILSON said. " We go through stretches
where we just can't find any flow on the offensive end. Our half
court defense has been fantastic, but our decision making has
been quite questionable."
While Burch boosted her 3-point basket count to 16 along with
logging 3 assists and a trio of steals, CHELSEA KITCHENS patrolled
the boards for 19 rebounds.
"Angel continues to be a strong threat behind the arc,"
Wilson said. "All 16 of her treys have come in the last five
games. Chelsea's defense and rebounding have been awesome."
Although they haven't been major offensive threat, DANIELLE ST.
JOHN and NINA SCHMIDT have been masters of defense in the past
few games.
"They are proving why they are in the starting lineup,"
Wilson said. "They are showing defensive intensity and a
never-quit attitude."
EASTLAKE 62, GRANITE HILLS 44 - The Titans took a
20-13 1st quarter lead and never looked back in Saturday's (Dec.
20) Granite Hills Invitational. AMY HOYT paced the Eagles (6-4)
with 10 points.

Vaqueros give Komets taste of own medicine
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - In recent years, coach Scotty Gilbert and his Kearny
Komets have taken pride in running up the score on lesser opponents.
Reaching the 100-point plateau is almost required to achieve a
mark of success in their camp. Coach DARIN CURTIS and his El Capitan
Vaqueros threw up a stone wall in Friday night's (Dec. 19) Granite
Hills Invitational semifinals, as they crushed the Komets 70-49
at Valhalla High.
ALLISON DUFFY, a 6-foot-1 sophomore, registered 24 points, 25
rebounds, 5 steals and 3 assists, to lift El Capitan (6-1) to
a surprisingly easy romp over the Komets to gain a berth in Saturday's
(Dec. 19) tournament title bout against El Camino at Granite Hills
at 7:40 p.m.
"This was by far our best game of the season so far,"
Curtis said. "We had only three turnovers in the back court
all night."
Despite foul trouble, HEATHER MOLZEN added 19 points and 5 rebounds
for the Vaqueros.
"Duffy was breaking their press and they didn't have an answer
for Heather at the other end," Curtis said. "Duffy was
just lobbing the ball over the top."
Molzen might have had an easier night had she not been whistled
for three fouls in the final 16 seconds of the 1st half in which
Kearny held a 37-35 lead.
"I took a chance and played Heather the first four minutes
of the 3rd quarter and she scored the 1st five baskets,"
Curtis said.
Kearny scored only 12 points in the second half, while El Capitan
fired in 35.
EL CAMINO 46, SANTANA 38 - Only three Sultans scored,
but Santana still managed to make a game of it but fell short
in Friday's (Dec. 19) semifinals of the Granite Hills Invitational.
COURTNEY ASH tossed in four 3-pointers and shared high-point honors
with Santana teammate ROBIN APPLEBY at 14 points. Ash also logged
4 steals and 6 deflections while Appleby collected 3 steals and
5 deflections.
JORDAN FRANEY added 10 points and 6 rebounds for Santana (6-2),
which shot 25 percent from the field and was afforded only 6 opportunities
from the free throw line.
Nikki Oakland paced El Camino (10-2) with 15 points, 16 rebounds
and 10 blocked shots.
Trailing 36-19, the Sultans made a bona fide charge, slashing
the Warriors hefty advantage to 40-36 with less than four minutes
to play.
"Courtney Ash was our inspirational leader in that comeback,"
Santana coach WADE VICKERY said. "She was making shots, diving
on the floor for loose balls and generally doing everything she
could to bring us back."
CHRISTIAN 51, SAN DIEGUITO 37 - RACHEL EDELEN scored
17 points and JAMIE RAY added 16 as the Patriots (3-4) tamed the
host Mustangs to gain a berth in San Dieguito Tournament championship
Saturday night (Dec.20) at 8 o'clock.
HOLLY ERICKSON added 8 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for
Christian.
USDHS 58, VALHALLA 35 - Senior ADRIANA MALONE netted
a career-high 16 points, connecting on 7 of 15 shots from the
field as the Norsemen (6-2) were defeated by USDHS in Friday's
(Dec. 19) Granite Hills Invitational.
The Dons pinned Valhalla down 11-2 after one period and extended
that advantage to 28-17 by intermission.
Trailing by as much as 14 points in the second quarter, the Norsemen
fought back to close the deficit to 2 points with 2:06 remaining
in the third quarter. A pair of free throws and a trey by USDHS's
Ali Farino catapulted a 28-7 run to end the game.
CHELSEA KITCHENS collected 22 rebounds for the Norsemen, while
ANGEL BURCH chipped in with 8 points, 6 rebounds, 5 steals and
5 assists.
MONTE VISTA 56, MAR VISTA 41 - TASHANA HOWELL scored
14 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, logged 3 steals and handed out
3 assists on Friday (Dec. 19) to lead the Monarchs (6-3) past
the Mariners in a Coronado Round Robin Tournament tilt.
Monte Vista junior TANISHA SHELLEY chipped in with a team-best
15 points and 7 rebounds, while SHALIA BOHANNON hauled down 11
rebounds, dished off 4 assists and made 4 steals to go with 9
points for the Monarchs.
SOUTHWEST 58, GROSSMONT 41 - LAURA FELICE scored
a team-high 22 points, hitting 5 of 7 shots from above the arc
and all 6 free throw attempts as the Foothillers (5-5) lost to
visiting Southwest in a Granite Hills Invitational game Friday
night (Dec. 19).
POWAY 37, GRANITE HILLS 28 - The Eagles (6-3) fell behind
12-3 in the 1st quarter and never recovered as they dropped a
Granite Hills Invitational contest to Poway (4-3).
MORGAN SABALA (9 points) and JOY EDWARDS (8 points) led the Eagles
scoring.

Sultans saddle Rancho Bernardo
with first loss as Franey scores 29
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - Never count out a WADE VICKERY-coached team when there
are high stakes sizzling on the grill. The Santana coaching guru
guided his Sultans to an impressive 52-50 Granite Hills Invitational
victory over previously unbeaten Rancho Bernardo in Wednesday's
(Dec. 17) opening round at Valhalla High.
"We played great defense in that we slowed down their running
game," Vickery said as Santana improved to 6-1, while the
bucking Broncos were saddled with their first loss in six starts.
Santana sophomore JANET FRANEY erupted for a game-high 29 points
and 9 rebounds, which included netting 8 of 10 free throws.
"Franey was huge on offense," Vickery said. "She
posted down low, we got the passes in to her, she got her shots
and made them."
As close as the final score was, the Sultans (6-1) never enjoyed
a large lead. Santana won by gradually outscoring Rancho Bernardo
in each of the first the quarters. And then the Sultans held on
in the final period when the Broncos galloped to a 17-13 edge.
Santana's MARGEAUX BASS passed out a game-high 10 assists, while
garnering 5 steals.
EL CAPITAN 49, POWAY 41 - El Capitan used its "Twin
Towers" - HEATHER MOLZEN (16 points, 12 rebounds, 6 steals
and 3 blocks) and ALLISON DUFFY (14 points, 14 rebounds) - to
pound Poway in Wednesday's (Dec.17) Granite Hills Invitational.
"It was pretty even all the way," said El Capitan
coach DARIN CURTIS. "We held the edge the whole game, but
couldn't do anything with it. My second string did great. They
came off the bench and had all 10 of the points in the 2nd quarter
- they actually increased our lead by two at the half. We're
not playing very well right now, so it was good to come out on
top. And it was nice to see the second string go in and have success."
Granite Hills Invitational
Valhalla 41, Grossmont 33 - After suffering an embarrassing
59-point loss to El Camino on Tuesday (Dec.16), the Norsemen (6-1)
rallied on the strength of ANGEL BURCH's 19 points and 6 steals
to defeat the visiting Foothillers (5-4) in Wednesday's 1st round
bout in the Granite Hills Invitational.
"Angel shot well in the first half (all 4 treys)," Valhalla
coach ROBERT WILSON said. "She hit the shots she was given
and the team rallied behind her."
Burch's hot shooting helped extend Valhalla's 1st half lead to
the largest margin to 22-8.
After playing fairly even during the 3rd quarter, Grossmont
closed the gap to 4 with just under three minutes to play. Steals
by Burch and LAUREN SHEPPARD led to lay-ups on the other end to
extend the Valhalla lead back to 8 points and that is where it
ended.
CHELSEA KITCHENS reeled in 13 rebounds to go with 7 points for
Valhalla while Sheppard registered 7 points and 7 rebounds.
MARISA MOHAN tallied 14 points, while THERESE RIEDELL rustled
up 11 rebounds for Grossmont.
Coronado Round Robin Tournament
MONTE VISTA 66, JULIAN 45 - After a slow start in the
opening quarter where the score was knotted at 17-all, the Monarchs
(5-3) closed their defensive gates in the middle two frames of
Wednesday's (Dec. 17) joust with the visiting Julian Eagles and
continued on for the easy victory.
SHALIA BOHANNON banged in 18 points to lead Monte Vista (5-3),
while TANISHA SHELLEY added 15 points and 5 steals. TASHANA HOWELL
turned in a nifty triple of 10 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists.
BRITNEY SMALL cleared 7 rebounds and racked up 6 points, while
ASHLEY MILLER scored 8 points and recorded 4 steals for the Monarchs.
Granite Hills Invitational
KEARNY 71, @ GRANITE HILLS 40 - The flu bug had more impact
on host Granite Hills than did the flashy Kearny Komets in Wednesday's
(Dec. 17) contest. Although the Eagles (6-2) managed to stay close
for a quarter, they wilted under the Komets intense pressure defense.
Granite Hills coach JAY ROWLETT isn't afraid to yell "uncle,"
as he and his team have been engulfed by the flu in the past week.
"We're not even practicing tomorrow," Rowlett said.
"We're too weak. We've all got the flu, including me."
Somehow JENNIFER WHITMOYER managed to score 11 points to pace
the Eagles. She nailed a trio of 3-pointers giving her 20 treys
for the season.

Vaqueros get 21-steal win over
UC with defense
EastCounty Sports.com
POWAY - It wasn't a thing of beauty, but El Capitan coach DARIN
CURTIS was pleased that his Vaqueros were able to leave the court
at Poway High Tuesday night (Dec.16) with a decisive 48-24 Granite
Hills Invitational victory over University City.
"We had a terrible shooting percentage, but our defense was
great," Curtis said as the Vaqueros improved to 4-1.
Despite her 1-for-8 free throw shooting, sophomore ALLISON DUFFY
managed to ring up a game-high 15 points while grabbing 8 rebounds
and recording 5 steals for the Vaqueros.
ALISSA UNDEN added 12 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds and a pair
of steals for the Vaqueros, who also received 10 points, 8 rebounds
and 5 steals from HEATHER MOLZEN.
"We had only eight girls tonight, so we had to do a lot of
rotation," Curtis said.
El Capitan's pressing defense produced 21 steals against the Centurions.
More Granite Hills Invitational:
GRANITE HILLS 48, RAMONA 40 - Suffocating illness
sapped the overall strength of the Eagles (6-1), but they still
combined to find enough energy to defeat the visiting Bulldogs
Tuesday (Dec.16).
"Every single member of our team has the flu," Granite
Hills coach JAY ROWLETT said. "We had to sub like we do at
a summer league game. Nobody plays more than two minutes at a
stretch."
JENNIFER WHITMOYER nailed a quartet of 3-pointers - to bring her
trey total to 17 - en route to a team high of 14 points.
EASTLAKE 65, GROSSMONT 32 - Playing without their
top scorer and ball-handler due to injury and illness, the Foothillers
found it difficult to break the press of the Titans, falling in
a first-round contest of the Granite Hills Invitational Tuesday
night (Dec. 16).
JACLYN GOLDBERG, an All-Grossmont League performer last season,
was missing from the Grossmont line-up due to a knee strain and
the flu. In her absence, BREE HEMINGWAY stepped up to score 14
points, while LAURA FELICE added 12, but it wasn't enough.
Eastlake (3-2) received 20 points from Jessie Schmuckal, while
Jackie Paras nailed a trio of treys en route to a season-high
17 points, The Hillers fell to 5-3 overall, and will play at
Valhalla in Wednesday's (Dec. 17) consolation quarterfinals.
SANTANA 73, SOUTHWEST 26 - JORDAN FRANEY scored a
season high 23 points and hogged 12 rebounds as the Sultans smoked
the Raiders in Tuesday's (Dec.16) 1st round of Granite Hills Invitational
action and now are looking at a showdown with the North County
bullies from Rancho Bernardo Wednesday (Dec.17) on the Valhalla
High courts.
EL CAMINO 76, VALHALLA 17 - University of Dayton
bound forward Nikki Oakland poured in 23 points and grabbed 14
rebounds, as the visiting Wildcats breezed to a first-round victory
over Valhalla Tuesday (Dec. 16).
El Camino forward Megan Johnson, who is headed for Division II
power Metro State (Colo.), added 19 points, as the Wildcats opened
the contest on a 15-0 run, then opened the second half with 33
consecutive points, including a 29-0 string over the entire third
period. During the first streak, the Cats lost the services of
Jo Jo Diego to a dislocated right shoulder, but she later returned
to the contest to add 14 points.
LAUREN SHEPPARD scored 7 points and sophomore HANNAH GERKEN secured
11 rebounds for the Norsemen, which saw their season-opening,
five-game winning streak snapped.
HELIX 61, MONTGOMERY 59 (OT) - CHASITY TOILOLO's
put-back with 3.5 seconds left in overtime hosted the Highlanders
(4-2) to the overtime non-league victory Tuesday night (Dec. 16)
in South Bay.
That was the second of Toilolo's clutch put-backs, as she also
converted a follow shot for a deuce with 0:02 left that sent the
game into overtime.
Toilolo finished with 12 points and 7 rebounds, while ASHLEY PENN
and DIANA LEASAU led the scoring parade with 21 and 19 points
respectively. Penn's totals included a trio of 3-pointers.

ORANGE GLEN 60, MONTE VISTA 32 - The Monarchs were playing

seven starts in Tuesday's (Dec. 16) Coronado Round-Robin Tournament
as they were slapped with their third loss in seven games.
No other information was reported by the Monte Vista coaches.

Cougars notch second win with 22-point improvement
over Hoover
EastCountySports.com
SAN DIEGO - TIFFANIE CROSS coined a double-double of 12 points
and 14 rebounds Monday night (Dec. 15) as the visiting Cougars
(2-9) of Steele Canyon edged host Hoover 39-37 in a non-league
contest.
Quite a nifty improvement for the Cougars, who were trounced by
20 points when these clubs met last year at Steele Canyon.
"I reminded our kids of that game," Steele Canyon coach
FRANK QUINONES recalled. "And we came out and played hard
right from the start."
Yet, the game came down to a jump ball with 0:09 remaining. The
Cardinals won the jump, but eventually missed a game-winning shot
attempt that Cross turned into a game-winning defensive rebound.
"(Hoover) pressed us the entire game, and we broke their
press but missed dozens of lay-ups," Quinones said. "If
we make those lay-ups, we win easily."

Sultans say lesson learned after late loss
to Sundevils in Santana championship
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - A pair of evenly matched teams fought to the final buzzer, but a mistake of inexperience cost the Sultans a championship in Saturday night's (Dec. 13) Santana Coca-Cola Classic championship game.
Moments after JORDAN FRANEY drilled in a 3-point shot to knot the finale at 54-all with 0:09 remaining, another Santana player was called for an intentional foul, allowing Leigh Ann Robinson to sink two foul shots with 0:06, giving Mt. Carmel a 56-54 victory.
The strong defensive effort by the Sultans
kept the game close, including Franey taking-the-charge on a Mt.
Carmel player's drive to the basket. However, the defense was
so good, Santana only had one team foul with three minutes
remaining and couldn't risk the Sundevils having the lead as time
ticked away with no way of getting the ball back.
After Franey tied it with her shot from
beyond the arc, overtime appeared
evident. And then came the foul that turned the tide in the Sundevils'
favor.
"I wish we would have won, but it was
a mistake of inexperience," said
Santana coach WADE VICKERY. "At least it happened early in
the season, so we
know it won't happen at the end of the season when the games really
count.
"This game was close from start to
finish - the largest lead being just 5
points. It was a tough loss, but we are a lot further at this
point than I
thought we'd be."
Franey paced the Sultans (4-1) with 17 points,
including perfect 6-for-6 foul
shooting to go along with 6 rebounds. Freshman SHAE BASS added
14 points
(7-for-13 shooting) and a team-best 7 rebounds. ROBIN APPLEBY
contributed 12
points and cleared 6 caroms, while MARGEAUX BASS handed out 10
assists.
Vanessa Santos led the Sundevils (5-0) with
17 points, including five
3-pointers.
SAN DIEGO 65, MOUNT MIGUEL 50 - Charde Houston poured in 40 points to claim
tournament MVP honors Saturday night (Dec. 13), while lifting
the Cavers to the
Columbia Division championship of the Granite Hills-Sportland
Classic at
Granite Hills.
Houston scored at least eight points in
every period, punctuating her effort
with a long, 25-foot 3-point basket, despite a series of short
runs by the
Matadors (7-3) in an attempt to keep contact with San Diego (10-1).
"She's going to UConn - what more can
I say?" said Mount Miguel guard
GENEVIEVE COSTELLO, who led the team in assists. "She's so
tall (6-foot-2), she
skies over everyone, so we had to put two, three and sometimes
four players on
her."
KAYLA HENRY played another strong game for
the Matadors, rolling in 13
points, grabbing 15 rebounds and 4 steals. Henry is averaging
15.3 points and 8
rebounds over her last six games.
Mount Miguel also received 15 points from
sophomore JERICA WILLIAMS for the
second game in a row.
LA COSTA CANYON 45, GRANITE HILLS 40
- For the second year running, the
Eagles swept through pool play unbeaten, but could not maintain
an early lead
in the second championship game of the Granite Hills Sportland
Tournament Saturday
night (Dec.13).
Thus, LCC won the Navy Division championship.
The Eagles (5-1) built a 21-18 halftime
lead, but failed to shut off LCC's
Rachel Dyer who scored all 11 of her points after halftime, including
eight in
the final period, to power the Mavericks (5-1).
JENNIFER WHITMOYER topped Granite Hills
(5-1) with 15 points, including a
trio a 3-pointerEagles.
Grossmont Tournament
CARLSBAD 59, GROSSMONT 35 - Maybe
the Grossmont Foothillers shouldn't invite
the Carlsbad Lancers to their tournament anymore. Carlsbad made
it look easy
Saturday (Dec. 13) to repeat as Grossmont Tournament champions.
Carlsbad jumped out to an early lead behind
its intense full-court pressure,
outscoring the Hillers 22-4 in the 1st quarter. The gritty Hillers
(5-2) fared
better in the second period, playing the Lancers even, as seniors
MARISA
MOHAN sparked her side with three hard-earned baskets, and LAURA
FELICE lit up
a pair of 3-pointers.
Grossmont junior forward BREE HEMINGWAY
was steady throughout scoring a team
high 13 points while collecting 5 boards and doling out a few
bruises. She
missed only one of her 7 shots from the field.
Freshman center THERESE RIEDEL again made
her presence felt, scoring a couple
baskets and gathering 6 rebounds while swatting 3 away shots.
Injured guard JACLYN GOLDBARG represented
the Foothillers on the
all-tournament team. Other East County players earning all-tourney
honors were
Helix's DIANA LEASAU and MUAAU NADERHOFF of West Hills.
Tournament MVP Amy Van Hollebeke led all scorers with 22 points.
WEST VIEW 47, MONTE VISTA 35 - Losing senior standout TASHANA HOWELL early in
Saturday's (Dec. 13) Coronado Round-Robin Tournament finale put
a crimp in
the Monarchs' plans.
Howell, who suffered a cut above her eye,
had scored only 2 points, logged 1
rebound and a steal before she was taken to a nearby hospital.
SHALIA BOHANNON helped pick up the slack,
scoring a team-high 13 points. She
did most of her damage from the free throw line where she connected
on 9 of 14
chances.
Sophomore JOHNAE JACKSON came up big on
the boards for the Monarchs (4-2),
collecting a dozen rebounds, while ASHLEY MILLER pilfered six
passes against
the Wolverines (3-1).
FRANCIS PARKER 70, EL CAJON VALLEY 23
- Parker Coach LENNY SCHLEIN's Lancers
(6-0) proved they are one of the top teams in the SDCIF Division
IV again
this year. They ran over outmanned El Cajon Valley with relative
ease on Friday
(Dec. 12) and continued to win the championship of their own tournament
by
defeating La Jolla.
EL CAJON VALLEY 47, PREUSS ACADEMY 29
- RAWAA PATROS scored 11 points
and
MICHELLE THOMPSON added 10 Saturday (Dec. 13) as the Braves (2-3)
toppled the
Tritons in a Francis Parker Tournament consolation game.
The Braves built a 19-14 halftime lead and then gradually pulled away.
"It was a good game for us in that
we matched up well," El Cajon Valley coach
RANDY ADAMS said. "We were able to rebound and run. Patros
and Thompson
dominated. We are starting to come together as a team."
PALM DESERT 75, STEELE CANYON 25 - The visiting Cougars (1-8) were no match
for the desert powerhouse from the Southern CIF Section in Saturday's
(Dec. 13)
Brawley Pepsi Invitational.
TIFFANIE CROSS and CELESTE MARTINS popped
in 8 points apiece to lead Steele
Canyon.
IMPERIAL 59, STEELE CANYON 26 - For the second time this season, the Cougars
(1-9) lost to Imperial, this time in the Brawley Pepsi Invitational.
KEISHA STILES topped the Cougars with 8
points.

Granite Hills players tie
up the ball against Escondido Friday night.
Cougars go a long way to get
first-ever varsity victory
EastCountySports.com
BRAWLEY - This desert town has been kind to Steele Canyon athletes.
The Cougars' football team won its first ever San Diego CIF playoff
game here a couple weeks ago. And Friday night (Dec. 12) it was
FRANK QUINONES and the Steele Canyon girls basketball team that
earned a milestone victory. The Lady Cougars unsheathed their
claws and scratched out a 49-44 win over Holtville in the Brawley
Pepsi Invitational. It was the first victory in the two-year history
of the varsity program.
TIFFANIE CROSS scored a season-high 18 points to lead the Cougars
(1-6), who snapped a 28-game losing streak dating back to last
year.
"We finally got the monkey off our back," a relieved
Quinones said. "Our girls weren't used to having a lead at
halftime."
It was a big lead, too, as SC had Holtville pinned down 31-17
at intermission.
"But our kids came out of the locker thinking the game was
already won," recalled Quinones as he reflected on the near-disastrous
3rd quarter when the Cougars were outscored 12-5 leaving them
with a 36-29 edge. "I blew a gasket."
Quinones' crew, which came in averaging less than 30 points per
game, regained its poise and scrambled to the finish line for
the win.
CENTRAL UNION 46, STEELE CANYON 31 - The Cougars appeared
primed for a sweep of Friday's (Dec. 12) doubleheader as they
built a 20-5 halftime lead over Central Union.
The Cougars took an 11-point advantage into the 4th quarter only
to have the bottom fall out as the Spartans went on a 28-2 scoring
spree during the final eight minutes to steal an apparent victory
for the Cougars (1-7).
Lisa Sigmond-Garcia, who tallied just 1 points in the first three
quarters, poured in 14 markers in the final period.
"She was hitting 3-point shots all over the place,"
Quinones said. "And it wasn't like we didn't have a hand
in her face."
What disappointed Quinones most was Steele Canyon converted just
22 of 50 shots from the free throw line.
Granite Hills Sportland Classic
GRANITE HILLS 48, ESCONDIDO 38 - MORGAN SABALA banked
home a 3-pointer from the top of the arc at the halftime buzzer
Friday (Dec. 12) as the Eagles (5-0) rocked to a 30-8 lead at
intermission and then continued on for the Granite Hills Sportland
Classic victory over the visiting Cougars.
Despite rotating a bevy of players on and off the floor, the Eagles
played solid defense, holding the Cougars to four points over
the opening 14 minutes.
Sabala scored 10 of her team-leading 12 points in the 1st half.
JENNIFER WHITMOYER buried a trio of 3-pointers and cleared 8 rebounds
for the Eagles, who host La Costa Canyon for the Navy Division
championship of the Granite Hills Sportland Classic Saturday (Dec.
13) at 2:30 p.m.
Grossmont Tournament
GROSSMONT 49, SWEETWATER 33 - The Foothillers brought
out a new member of their cast Friday night (Dec. 12) as 6-foot-2
freshman THERESE RIEDEL made her varsity debut in fine fashion.
Riedel's sparkle coupled with the steadying influence and solid
shooting of senior LAURA FELICE led the 5-1 Foothillers
to a convincing win and a bid into Saturday's (Dec. 13) championship
Grossmont Tournament game.
Riedel, brought up to the varsity along with her sister LIZ RIEDEL
to patch holes in a depleted Hiller roster announced her arrival
by means of 11 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.
"Therese was outstanding tonight," said an elated Coach
WALLEY YEAKLE. "I think our future looks very bright."
Felice, nicknamed "Fuego" for her uncanny ability to
get hot from the outside, didn't disappoint as she buried 4 three
pointers en route to a game high 21 points.
Also leading the charge was SAMANTHA MOHAN who poured in 15 points
on an array of acrobatic lay-ups and floaters while collecting
4 rebounds and 3 steals. ANNIE GONZALES added 4 points and her
younger sister MICHELLE a bucket. BREE HEMINGWAY rounded out the
Hillers' scoring with 7.
Grossmont will face Carlsbad Saturday (Dec. 13) at 11 a.m. in
a rematch of last year's championship game.
Granite Hills Sportland Classic
MOUNT MIGUEL 69, CHRISTIAN 24 - Playing without junior
point guard GENEVIEVE COSTELLO, who is nursing a sore ankle, the
Matadors (7-2) clobbered Christian (1-4) in Friday's (Dec. 12)
Granite Hills Sportland Classic.
Senior forward KAYLA HENRY turned in another sparkling performance
of 19 points and 7 rebounds to guide the Matadors past the outmanned
Patriots.
Sophomore JERICA WILLIAMS also enjoyed a profitable evening with
15 points. 5 rebounds 5 assists and a pair of steals for Mount
Miguel, which meets San Diego for the tournament's Columbia Division
title Saturday (Dec. 13) at 6 p.m.
RACHEL EDELEN and HOLLY ERICKSON notched 7 points apiece to top
Christian.
Granite Hills Sportland Classic
MONTE VISTA 67, CLAIREMONT 48 - Coach SANDY WRIGHT's Monarchs
are on the move. Sure, few like to give her team a chance of competing
for the Grossmont South League title this year, but watch out.
Even if these girls don't claim the circuit crown, they should
have a lot to say about the team that does.
TASHANA HOWELL tossed in 21 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and made
4 steals to carry the Monarchs (4-1) past the Chieftains on Friday
(Dec. 12). TANISHA SHELLEY shoveled in 16 points, while BRITNEY
SMALL delivered a dozen points and 12 rebounds for Monte Vista.
Grossmont Tournament @ Grossmont
HELIX 51, WEST HILLS 39 - CHASITY TOILOLO produced game
highs of 17 points, 15 rebounds and 5 blocked shots as the
Highlanders whipped the Wolf Pack in Friday's (Dec. 12) tournament
consolation contest at Grossmont High.
DIANA LEASAU clicked on 7 of 12 shots from the field for 14 points
and her sister MELE
LEASAU grabbed 14 rebounds as Helix improved to 3-2 and West Hills
fell to 5-5.
CAITLIN WEISS (11 points, 3 rebounds) and AIME CORDEIRO (10 points,
4 rebounds, 3 steals) led West Hills.
Bronco Invitational
RANCHO BERNARDO 76, EL CAPITAN 49 - Sophomore ALLISON
DUFFY had a career night in Friday's (Dec. 12) championship game
of the Bronco Invitational at Rancho Bernardo.
While the 6-foot-1 Duffy was connecting for 15 field goals on
her way to a 33-point night, the Vaqueros (3-1) were all but out
of contention by halftime as they trailed 46-27 at the break.
Duffy also corralled 14 rebounds and recorded 7 steals for El
Capitan. HEATHER MOLZEN added 11 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals.
"We ran into a buzzsaw tonight," El Capitan coach DARIN
CURTIS said. "They (the Broncos) shot 75 percent from the
field in the first half, and then our big girls got tired in the
second half. WE couldn't make a play, let alone make a shot."
Duffy, Molzen and guard ALISSA UNDEN were all named to the All-Tournament
team.

MOUNT MIGUEL 53, SCRIPPS RANCH 46 - While the Matadors
tacked on their 6th win in 8 starts in Thursday's (Dec. 11) Granite
Hills Sportland Classic contest, Mount Miguel point guard GENEVIEVE
COSTELLO left the game with an ankle sprain early in the 3rd quarter.
Matadors coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL wasn't sure of the extent of Costello's
injury, but said his floor leader "heard something pop."
The Matadors (6-2) were breezing 29-16 early in the 3rd quarter
when Costello got her feet tangled up with Shelley Devaney and
went down with a thud.
In Costello's absence, KAYLA HENRY hammered down 22 points, while
grabbing 5 rebounds and notching 23 steals.
"We did a good job of getting the ball inside to Kayla,"
Sandoval said. "And she made the shots."
Mount Miguel sophomore JERICA WILLIAMS enjoyed her finest scoring
night of the season with 13 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals.
WEST HILLS 51, ESCONDIDO 47 - Defensive pressure
by the Wolf Pack (5-4) created 36 Escondido turnovers in Thursday's

Cougars.
Trailing 20-19 at the half, the Pack turned up the pressure for
a 15-8 3rd quarter scoring edge and continued on for the victory.

4-0 Eagles gain co-finals of Sportland Classic,
which will have two winners
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - Granite Hills used a balanced scoring attack to defeat
Bonita Vista 49-25 Wednesday (Dec. 10) and advance to the finals
of the Granite Hills Sportland Classic.
"(MEAGAN) ST. JOHN saved us. She hit a lot of crucial baskets
and free throws in the 2nd quarter," said Eagles coach JAY
ROWLETT.
St. John, a 5-foot-9 sophomore, scored 12 points and grabbed 6
rebounds, as the Eagles won their 4th game without a loss. Sophomore
JOY EDWARDS added 11 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals for Granite
Hills.
"Joy had a good game - made some easy baskets and set
up her teammates,:" Rowlett said. "(JEANNIE) CASE was
unbelievable with her defense tonight."
Case had 7 steals to go with 7 points.
The Granite Hills Sportland Tournament has taken on a new wrinkle.
Because there are three teams with 5-0 records, rather than the
anticipated two teams, the format of the tournament is being changed
to allow for two championships: the Columbia Division and the
Navy Division. Two 5-0 teams will face off for one championship,
and one 5-0 team will face the strongest 4-1 team for the other.
SANTANA 79, RAMONA 45 - Five Sultans scored 9 or
more points Wednesday (Dec. 10) as undefeated Santana tamed the
Bulldogs in Wednesday's (Dec.10) Santana-Coca Cola Classic.
Freshman SHAE BASS was brilliant for Santana, pouring in 14 points,
grabbing 7 rebounds, and handing out 5 assists, while recording
3 steals.

of the 4th sister in the Bass family that he has coached. "By
the time she is done, she's really going to be something special."
.
ROBIN APPLEBY pumped in 16 points, while collecting 7 rebounds
for Santana (4-0). MARGUEAX BASS chipped in with 14 points and
7 assists.

The Monarchs broke in front with a 17-8 scoring burst in the 2nd

Johnson calls bank as Matadors cash in for
buzzer-beater over champ El Camino
EastCountySports.com
SPRING VALLEY - It wasn't exactly a shot heard around the
world, but Mount Miguel freshman LASHAWN JOHNSON won't forget
the 4-foot bank shot she unleashed to give the Matadors a 43-42
victory over defending San Diego CIF Division I champion El Camino
in Tuesday's (Dec. 9) Granite Hills Sportland Classic game.
"The play we designed was to go to (senior forward) KAYLA
HENRY," Mount Miguel coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL said.
Sound strategy. Henry got the ball and took the close range shot.
It didn't find the center of the cone, however.
No problem.
Enter the 5-foot-9 Johnson, who had only 2 rebounds prior to turning
her game-winning carom of Henry's misfire into Mount Miguel's
5th win in 7 starts. Oh, how sweet it was for Mount Miguel, which
had lost to the Wildcats by 4 points less than a week ago.
"Lashawn is going to be a great player," Sandoval said.
"That's why she's up on varsity as a freshman. She was alert
and in position to make that big rebound for us. It was a great
win."
Johnson totaled only 4 points for the night, as junior point-guard
GENEVIEVE COSTELLO paced the Matadors with 17 points, 5 rebounds,
4 assists and 2 steals.
El Camino looked as if it might run away and hide as the Wildcats
scored the final 6 points of the first half to lead 27-16 at the
break.
But Mount Miguel, which has a trademark for playing tenacious
defense, forced the Wildcats into 23 turnovers while closing the
deficit to 34-32 by the end of the 3rd quarter.
"I think we just wore them down with our 'man' defense,"
Sandoval said.
The pillar of the Mount Miguel defensive effort was the 5-foot-9
Henry, who held El Camino's 6-foot-1 Dayton University-bound senior
Nikki Oakland to 13 points - 15 fewer than she tallied when the
Wildcats won the first go-'round.
VALHALLA 35, BONITA VISTA 20 - Great defense or poor
offense? That could be the question should Valhalla coach ROBERT
WILSON care to ask it. Wilson, however, is happy just to be off
to a 4-0 start following the Norsemen's victory over the Barons
of Bonita Vista in Tuesday's (Dec. 9) Granite Hills Sportland
Classic.
"We played just well enough to win,"
Wilson said. "We shot 15-52 (29%) from the floor, 4-14 (29%)
from the free throw line, and committed 30 turnovers. I am still
scratching my head."
On a more positive note, CHELSEA KITCHENS produced another solid
performance, hitting 6 of 8 shots from the floor for 14 points
while clearing 13 rebounds.
"She fights harder for the ball than any player I have ever
coached," Wilson said. "Even though she is only a sophomore,
she is deserving of her captain role."
Junior KRISTEN MITROVICH grabbed 10 rebounds for the Norsemen,
while ADRIANA MALONE dished off 7 assists.
EL CAPITAN 47, FALLBROOK 25 - ALLISON DUFFY scored 21 points,
notched 4 steals and secured a dozen rebounds Tuesday night (Dec.
9) as the Vaqueros (3-0) rolled to the Bronco Invitational victory
at Rancho Bernardo.
HEATHER MOLZEN added 15 points, 9 rebounds and pilfered 4 passes
for El Capitan.
VISTA 45, WEST HILLS 33 - Freshman MUAAU NADERHOFF
had the hot hand for the visiting Wolf Pack (4-4) in Tuesday's
(Dec. 9) Granite Hills Sportland Classic contest in North County,
but the Pack came up short.
Naderhoff clicked on 5 of 10 shots from the floor and 8 of 11
from the foul line for team-high 18 points. She also corralled
12 rebounds.

Goldbarg, Hillers' defense stifle Helix
at Grossmont Tournament
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - Long time rivals Helix and Grossmont missed the boat
during football season. Put the East County's oldest rivalry on
hold for the second straight year, they did. That hasn't been
the case in girls basketball, however. And that was much to the
delight of the Foothillers, who continued to hold the upper hand
on cross-conference rival Helix claiming a 55-41 victory in Monday
night's (Dec. 8) 3rd round action of the Grossmont Tournament.
Not that the Hillers have lost their respect for their talented
counterparts.
"Helix gets better each time we face them," said Grossmont
coach WALLEY YEAKLE. "TERRY (HINDS, Helix's second year coach)
has some really good athletes and has done a nice job bringing
them along. We certainly can no longer take this team lightly."
Grossmont junior forward BREE HEMINGWAY got the Lady Hillers going
in the 1st quarter connecting on her first three shots.
Helix answered with sophomore standout DIANA LEASAU, who
kept the Highlanders close, scoring 5 of her team high 19 points.
The Hillers led 12-11 to start the 2nd quarter, and soon turned
the defensive pressure up a notch. Holding the Highlanders
to 4 points in the quarter, the Hillers looked to their captain,
junior JACLYN GOLDBARG, to jumpstart the offense.
Goldbarg pulled out the heavy duty battery cables, sandwiching
22 points between the 2nd and 3rd quarters, including a barrage
of 3-pointers (4 in the 3rd quarter), giving the Hillers a comfortable
47-28 advantage to start the final period.
"It still seems strange to be playing against Coach Hinds,
but it's always exciting," said Goldbarg. "He was our
coach for two years on the freshman team at Grossmont and we all
still feel close to him."
Grossmont senior center MARISA MOHAN spent the evening neutralizing
her Helix counterpart, CHASITY TOILOLO. Mohan finished with 13
points and 7 boards, while Toilolo tossed in 9 points and cleared
9 boards for her side. But it was too little too late for
the Highlanders in the 4th, as Grossmont coasted home to its third
win in four starts.
Hemingway netted 5 of her 8 shots for 10 points, cleared 7 rebounds,
while Goldbarg added 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals to her
totals.
Helix gets another shot at the Hillers in just a few weeks, as
the teams hook up again on Jan. 7.
Other Grossmont scoring: Samantha Mohan 4, Michelle Gonzales 4,
Brett Henderson 2.
Other Helix scoring: Ashley Penn 4, Mele Leasau 4, Racquel Primas

VALHALLA 55, CRAWFORD 25 - Don't look now, but the
Valhalla Norsemen are off to a 3-0 start.
After a slow start and 5 turnovers in the 1st quarter Monday (Dec.
8), the Norsemen committed only 6 more turnovers the rest of the
game and outscored the Colts 40-14 over the final three periods.
Valhalla's LAUREN SHEPPARD scored a career-high 23 points, sinking
8 of 12 shots from the floor.
"Lauren played consistently all night," Valhalla coach
ROBERT WILSON said of his 5-foot-9 sophomore. "She
is finding ways to score within the offensive scheme, instead
of relying on herself for shots."
Perched on a 25-15 at halftime lead, Valhalla came out strong
with a 13-0 run to start the 3rd quarter.
Valhalla's ANGEL BURCH chimed in with 18 points, hitting 7 of
11 shots from the floor. She also nabbed 5 steals.
CHELSEA KITCHENS continued to dominate on the boards for the Norsemen,
as he grabbed 14 rebounds and rationed out 5 assists.
Other Valhalla scoring: Kitchens 5, Nina Schmidt 5, Adriana
Malone 2, Kristen Mitrovich 2.
MOUNT MIGUEL 69, VISTA 28 - After a somewhat sporadic
weekend, the Matadors of Mount Miguel regained their stride as
they ran over the toothless Vista Panthers Monday night (Dec.
8) in a Granite Hills Sportland Classic encounter.
Sparkplug point guard GENEVIEVE COSTELLO was on her game with
14 points, 5 steals, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Senior forward
KAYLA HENRY hammered down a dozen points and snagged 5 rebounds
for Mount Miguel (4-2).

Samantha Beasley 4, Amanda Beasley 2, Kristen Fisher 1.
VALLEY CENTER 63, MONTE VISTA 44 - Traveling into
the San Diego Section CIF's northern most corner, the Monarchs
(2-1) could not hold their own on the boards as they lost for
the first time in three Granite Hills Sportland Classic starts
on Monday night (Dec. 8).
"We got out-rebounded? that's what hurt us most," said
Monte Vista coach SANDY WRIGHT. "We didn't block out well.
We came out slow and we paid for it. We just weren't ready to
play like last week. They did a good job of pressuring us."
Other Monte Vista scoring: TASHANA HOWELL 14, TANISHA SHELLEY
13, SHALIA BOHANNON 10, Ashley Miller 6, Alysha Daigle 1.
CARLSBAD 59, WEST HILLS 46 - The visiting Lancers
sprinted to a 26-7 advantage in the 1st quarter of Monday's (Dec.
8) Grossmont Tournament contest and never looked back.
The Wolf Pack (4-3) shot only 30 percent from the floor and 10-for-22
from the free throw line as Carlsbad chalked up its 4th win without
a loss.
AIME CORDEIRO enjoyed a fine outing for the Wolf Pack with 9 points,
6 rebounds and 5 steals.
Other West Hills scoring: DANIELLE EDMONDSON 12, CAITLIN
WEISS 11, Caramie Huntington 6, Muaau Naderhoff 5, Kaylee Krings

Eagles get defensive, hold Oceanside to
four points in second half
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - A year ago, the Granite Hills Eagles looked to one
player to lead them. And that one player was indeed a standout,
ranking among the East County leaders in nearly every statistical
column. That player - JOELLE BUNNELL - has since graduated and
now plays at Grossmont College. But the Eagles have hardly folded
their tents. Coach JAY ROWLETT's squad is off to a 3-0 start this
season, including a 66-28 romp over Oceanside in Saturday's (Dec.
6) Granite Hills Sportland Classic action.
The Eagles' latest conquest of the visitors from North County
was a defensive stand. Granite Hills rationed the Pirates to 10
points over the final three quarters, including 4 in the second
half.
After battling to an 18-18 draw after one quarter, the Eagles
turned up their defensive intensity.
"Our pressure got to them eventually," Rowlett said.
"When we increased our pressure, it forced them into turnovers."
JENNIFER WHITMOYER clicked on 5 of 11 shots - all 3-pointers -
en route to game-high 17 points. She also shared the team high
in rebounding with freshman MARNESHA HALL at 8 apiece. Hall netted
6 of 10 shots (two 3s) to finish with 14 points.
MORGAN SABALA added 12 points, and MEAGAN ST. JOHN picked off
7 rebounds. JEANNIE CASE logged team-high 5 steals.
Other Granite Hills scoring: Case 7, Briana Lovett 4, St. John
4, Amy Hoyt 4, Joy Edwards 2, Amanda McCurdy 2.
VALHALLA 32, ESCONDIDO 31 - Not many East County
teams play a more physical brand of basketball than the Norsemen
of Valhalla. They proved that to host Escondido (0-2) in Saturday
night's (Dec. 6) game.
"Escondido had planned on using their big girl (Phylicia
Templeton 6-foot-2) as the go-to-girl in the game," Valhalla
coach ROBERT WILSON said. "We roughed her up a bit, committing
12 personal fouls against just her. This compared to apparently
only one foul called on her. However, the strategy paid off as
she scored only 4 points the entire game."
Valhalla junior guard ANGEL BURCH scored 9 of Valhalla's 11 first-half
points and totaled 15 for the game despite shooting 0-for-7 from
long distance. The 5-foot-5 Burch used her defensive pressure
for 8 steals and added 5 rebounds as a bonus.
CHELSEA KITCHENS spent most of the first half on the bench due
to foul woes. But the 5-foot-9 sophomore managed to reach double
figures in the rebounding category with 11 and displayed a nice
post move with under two minutes to go in the game to push the
Valhalla's lead to 30-27.
After an Escondido basket shaved the lead to one, LAUREN SHEPPARD's
putback with 0:46 remaining sealed the victory for Valhalla. Sheppard
finished with 9 points and 10 rebounds.
Other Valhalla scoring: Kitchens 7, Hannah Gerken 1.
MONTE VISTA 52, POINT LOMA 27 - Eleven Monarchs -
led by SHALIA BOHANNON's 15 points - contributed to the scoring
Saturday (Dec. 6) as Monte Vista posted its second Granite Hills
Sportland Classic victory in as many starts.
Bohannon also grabbed 7 rebounds and netted 7 steals for the Monarchs,
who bounced out to a 16-5 1st quarter lead. TIEAREA ROBERTSON
led Monte Vista on the boards with 8 rebounds.
"We were aggressive in our pressure defense," Monarchs
second-year head coach SANDY WRIGHT.
Monte Vista finished with 19 steals.
Other Monte Vista scoring: Tashana Howell 7, Tanisha Shelley 6,
Britney Smalls 6, Johnae Jackson 5, Ashley Miller 4, Sara Peckinpaugh
2, Erica Levenson 2, Alysha Daigle 2, Robertson 2, Tammie Farrell

SANTANA 73, HILLTOP 28 - Sophomore JORDAN FRANEY
enjoyed a solid performance, knocking down 19 points and collecting
9 rebounds as the Sultans sprinted past Hilltop in Saturday's
(Dec. 6) Santana-Coca Cola Classic encounter.
ROBIN APPLEBY added 12 points, MARGEAUX BASS scored all
of her 8 points in the first period and handed out 8 assists,
while SHAE BASS garnered 7 steals.
Other Santana scoring: Kelsey Ash 9, Margeaux Bass 8, Courtney
Ash 7, Shae Bass 6, Ashley Shepard 5, Heather Thomas 4, Maria
DeBarrows 3.
MOUNT MIGUEL 41, MODESTO CHRISTIAN 33 - Mount Miguel
senior KAYLA HENRY played her finest game of the young season
Saturday (Dec. 6), scoring 15 points and snagging 9 rebounds as
the Matadors marched past Modesto Christian in the
La Jolla Country Day Sweet 16 Invitational.
"It was a good win for us considering we played without two
starters (GENEVIEVE COSTELLO, JERICA WILLIAMS), Mount Miguel coach
ROBBIE SANDOVAL said. "We put a couple of kids in their places
- freshman VICTORIA MURPHY and sophomore TAVASHA YARBROUGH - and
they did a good job." Each of the neophytes had 5 rebounds.
MELODY CLAYTON cashed in with 12 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals
for Mount Miguel.
Other Mount Miguel scoring: Murphy 6, Kayla Huddleston 2, Beasley
4, Yarbrough 2.
WEST HILLS 31, SOUTHWEST 29 - DANIELLE EDMONDSON
rang up 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds Saturday (Dec. 6) as
the Wolf Pack edged the Raiders in the Grossmont Tournament.

Foothillers battle back but can't overtake
Henry at finish
EastCountySports.com
(Updated) EL CAJON- The Grossmont Foothillers came up a little
short in an extremely physical battle played on the Hiller's hardwood
with non-league rival Patrick Henry Friday night (Dec. 5).
"Our games with Patrick Henry have always been a little on
the rough side," said Grossmont coach WALLEY YEAKLE.
After coming out flat to start the game, the Hillers found themselves
in a 28-16 hole at the halfway mark.
"We didn't do a very good job of rebounding at either end
in the first half," said Yeakle. "We talked about it
at halftime and I was pleased the way the girls responded."
Grossmont used a furious 17-2 third quarter run to take a brief
33-30 lead, only to see Henry tie it at the buzzer on a long 3-pointer.
The intensity picked up even more in the 4th quarter as trainers
on both teams emptied their Band-Aid boxes trying to keep their
players on the floor.
With Henry leading 52-49 and just 1 tick left on the clock, Grossmont
needed to go the length of the court to score. Instead, JACLYN
GOLDBARG was unceremoniously fouled and sent to line to shoot
two. After making the first, Goldbarg intentionally missed the
second, giving the Hillers and their fans one last dose of adrenaline.
The put-back, however, fell short and Grossmont lost for the first
time in three starts.
Goldbarg led all scorers with 18 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and
dished 5 assists. MARISA MOHAN kicked in 16 points and cleared
a team-high 10 rebounds while SAM MOHAN added 7 points, 6 rebounds,
3 steals and blocked 3 shots.
LAURA FELICE tossed in 7 points and logged 5 steals, while BREE
HEMINGWAY chipped in a deuce.
EL CAPITAN 58, POWAY 40 - The flu-ridden Vaqueros used
their distinct height advantage to pound Poway 58-40 in Friday's
(Dec. 5) Bronco Invitational at Rancho Bernardo. ALLISON DUFFY
tossed in 17 points and secured 15 rebounds, while HEATHER MOLZEN
added 13 points and a game high 18 rebounds to paced the Vaqueros
(2-0).
"We led all the way," said El Capitan coach DARIN
CURTIS. " At the end of the 3rd quarter Poway came within
one point. They had a good 3rd quarter, but we went on a run in
the 4th. Everyone contributed for us tonight."
Other El Capitan scoring: Gina Pagano 9, Alissa Unden 7, Mallorie
Montgomery 7, Lisa Wilkins 5.
SANTANA 66, TORREY PINES 46 - Santana surged to an
impressive rout of the Falcons in Friday's (Dec. 5) Santana-Coca
Cola Classic as sophomore JORDAN FRANEY rang up a game-high 28
points and grabbed 8 rebounds.
"Jordan seems to have found her game," Santana coach
WADE VICKERY said.
Vickery praised the play of senior MARGEAUX BASS "for playing
great defense and putting alot of pressure on their point guard.
She had seven deflections."
Bass finished with 14 points and 9 assists.
Other Santana scoring: SHAE BASS 11, Courtney Ash 7, Robin Appleby
4, Maria DeBarrows 2.
EL CAMINO 49, MOUNT MIGUEL 45 - Nobody can accuse
Mount Miguel coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL of playing dodge ball. The
challenges just keep on coming.
The Matadors (2-2) couldn't solve El Camino's Nikki Oakland, who
led the two-time defending SDCIF Division I champion Wildcats
(3-1) with 28 points.
GENEVIEVE COSTELLO paced Mount Migeul with 17 points.
Other Mount Miguel scoring: Kayla Henry 9, Melody Clayton 8, Tavasha
Yarbrough 6, Lashawn Johnson 3, Victoria Murphy 2.
HORIZON 54, WEST HILLS 51 - The Panthers overpowered
the Wolf Pack 30-13 in the middle two quarters of Friday's (Dec.
5) Granite Hills Sportland Classic contest. But West Hills rebounded
in the 4th period and nearly packed enough punch to catch Horizon
and force overtime.
CARAMIE HUNTINGTON's 3-pointer with 18 seconds left made it a
one possession game, but the Wolf Pack couldn't take that final
step.
"The little things hurt us," West Hills coach CARLOS
MOSS said. "But we are getting better each game."
MUAAU NADERHOFF scored 12 points and hauled down 8 rebounds.
Other West Hills scoring: Huntington 12, AIME CORDEIRO 11, Caitlin
Weiss 7, Danielle Edmondson 4, Dalia Ghandour 3, Chelsey Howard
2.
BRAWLEY 68, STEELE CANYON 29 - KEISHA STILES scored 8 points
as the Cougars fell to Brawley in a non-league home game Friday
night (Dec. 5).
The Cougars (0-5) led 5-2, but Brawley scored the final 13 points
of the quarter to pull away.
Other Steele Canyon scoring: Tiffanie Cross 6, Adrianna Ussery
5, Cassie Glover 4, Alexis Robinson 2, Hayley Johnson 2, Celeste
Martins 1, Amanda Rice 1.

Eagles make case for strong season with
road win, 2-0 start
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - Eight girls scored for Granite Hills as the Eagles
handled host Horizon 49-40 in Thursday's (Dec.4) Granite Hills
Sportland Classic contest. Senior JEANNIE CASE cashed in a game
high 12 points, made 7 steals and grabbed 4 rebounds to pace the
2-0 Eagles.
"Case had a good game," said Granite Hills coach JAY
ROWLETT. "We were pushed a lot - only up by one at the start
of both the 3rd and 4th quarters - but we went on a run in the
4th quarter."
Indeed. Clinging to a 33-32 lead after three periods, the Eagles
broke the game open with a 16-8 burst in the final quarter.
"Horizon beat Vista 59-55 yesterday (Dec. 3) and had three
girls in high double figures. Two of them - Neff (19) and Anderson
(17) - we held to 5 and 6 points respectively tonight."
JENNIFER WHITMOYER added 11 points - most coming on a trio of
3-pointers - and 9 rebounds.
Other Granite Hills scoring: Amy Hoyt 6, Amanda McCurdy 6, Marnesha
Hall 5, Meagan St. John 4, Joy Edwards 3, Morgan Sabala 2.
GROSSMONT 72, HOOVER 20 - The Foothillers continued their winning ways Thursday
night (Dec. 4), coasting over the Hoover Cardinals in 2nd round
action of the Grossmont Tournament .
"Tonight was all about focusing on our defensive intensity,"
said Hiller coach WALLEY YEAKLE. "This early in the season
we seem to need constant reminders. Hopefully tonight's effort
will lead us in the right direction."
The Lady Hillers jumped out to an early lead behind junior BREE
HEMINGWAY'S 11 first quarter points. Hemingway, who on the night
was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field, found herself on the receiving
end of some creative passing by MARISA MOHAN and JAC GOLDBARG.
Goldbarg continued the onslaught in the 2nd quarter, scoring 9
of her game high 19 points. Mohan's younger sister - sophomore
SAMANTHA - came on strong, scoring 14 points to go along with
7 boards. Adding to the fray was senior LAURA FELICE who also
poured in 14 points, including a pair of threes.
Junior BRETT HENDERSON and sophomore CHRISTINE SULLIVAN each celebrated
the night scoring their first varsity points with 3 apiece, and
the Gonzales sisters - Annie and Michelle - seemed to always be
around the ball, each collecting 5 rebounds and a couple of steals.
Other Grossmont scoring: Hemingway 15, SAM MOHAN 14, Marisa Mohan
2, Michelle Gonzales 2.
WEST HILLS 50, SWEETWATER 20 - A 16-1 scoring
spree in the 3rd quarter Thursday (Dec.4) sealed the Grossmont
Tournament victory for the Wolf Pack (3-0).
CARAMIE HUNTINGTON poured in 13 points and cleared 6 rebounds
to pace the Pack. DANIELLE EDMONDSON added 11 points - on 5-for-8
shooting - and 4 steals, while CAITLIN WEISS collected game-highs
of 9 rebounds, 8 rebounds and 4 assists.
Despite the lopsided victory the West Hills coaches weren't overly
pleased.
"There were too many turnovers, both teams - West Hills
29, Sweetwater 30," said West Hills assistant coach SIG CHABROWSKI.
"In the 2nd quarter of this game there were nine jump balls.
It was sloppy."
Said West Hills senior guard AIME CORDIERO, "In the 1st quarter,
the team was sleeping. But in the 2nd and 3rd quarters we stepped
it up and pulled together for our starters."
Added Wolf Pack sophomore DALIA GHANDOUR, "This was a nasty
win, but we'll do better next time."
Other West Hills scoring: Cordiero 8, Chelsey Howard 4, Weiss
4, Jessica Urban 3, Dara Preston 3, Kylee Krings 2, Samantha Ramsey
1, Muaau Naderhoff 1.
MOUNT MIGUEL 47, SAN MARCOS 42 - The Matadors rallied
from a 17-1 deficit in the 1st quarter to overthrow the Knights
in Thursday's (Dec. 4) La Jolla Country Day Sweet 16 Invitational.
A 15-3 splurge in the 3rd quarter hoisted Mount Miguel (2-1) back
on top.
"We held them scoreless for the first 7 minutes of the 3rd
quarter," Mount Miguel coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL said. "They
(the officials) were calling it pretty tight so we went to a straight
up man-to-man. It was a hackfest for most of the night.
"I know this is the Christmas season, but our girls were
way too generous in giving up easy layups," Sandoval said.
"We were fortunate to get out of this one with a win."
KAYLA HENRY led Mount Miguel with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while
JERICA WILLIAMS added 10 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals.
Other Mount Miguel scoring: Genevieve Costello 6, Kayla Huddleston
6, Melody Clayton 5, Lashawn Johnson 5, Tavasha Yarbrough 4.
CARLSBAD 69, HELIX 35 - The Highlanders could not
recover from a first quarter 22-6
Grossmont Tournament deficit as the Lancers rolled to a lopsided
victory Thursday (Dec.4) night.
"Carlsbad had a real good point guard," Helix assistant
coach WILLIE HATHAWAY said of Lancers sharp-shooter Amy Van Hollenbeke,
who scored a game high 32 points.
"They took us - inside, outside - they had the whole
package," said Hathway said.
Other Helix scoring: DIANA LEASAU 12, Racquel Primas 6,
Chasity Toilolo 5, Ashley Penn 4, Mele Leasau 4, Sharika Thompson
2, Shanae Singleton 2.
MONTGOMERY 56, CHRISTIAN 37
By John O. Rollo
A flu epidemic hit the Christian High campus this week, blind-siding
the Patriots girls' basketball team. That was evident Thursday
night (Dec. 4) as the Patriots ventured to the South Bay to face
Montgomery High's Aztecs as part of the Granite Hills Sportland
Classic. With just six healthy bodies available to play, the Patriots
fell to the host Aztecs.
Although they started out well, leading by 16-12 after one quarter,
a rash of turnovers and poor field goal shooting caused Christian
(1-2) to fall down to a 29-22 halftime deficit.
They would not recover, as the epidemic of turnovers (32 for the
game) and field goal inefficiency (7-45, 16%) prevented a comeback.
The one positive statistic for the game came from the free throw
line, where the Patriots finished 23-of-34.
The Patriots were led in scoring by the trio of RACHEL EDELEN,
JAMIE RAY and HEATHER MEIER - each with 9 points. HOLLY ERICKSON
and GRACE GARCIA pulled down 9 rebounds apiece.
Montgomery (1-2) was led in scoring by Mona Layug, who had a game-high
17 points.
Other Christian scoring: Garcia 6, Erickson 4.
MONTE VISTA 45, ESCONDIDO 34 - SHALIA BOHANNON popped
in 18 points and ASHLEY MILLER added 12 points as Monte Vista
opened the season Thursday (Dec. 4) with a Granite Hills Sportland
Classic victory over Escondido..
No other information was reported.

Sultans open up with win over University
City
EastCountySports.com
SANTEE - Make no mistake about it, perennial power Santana
will be hard-pressed to dominate the Grossmont North League this
season. Could be this circuit is the toughest it has ever been
in terms of the number of title contenders.
Santana's veteran coach WADE VICKERY isn't afraid to tab El Capitan
as the preseason favorite. Nor is he willing to dismiss veteran
Grossmont or surprising West Hills as teams to beat in this suddenly
deep talent pool.
Not that Vickery is willing to concede the league championship
- or anything else for that matter.
The Sultans tipped off the campaign Wednesday night (Dec. 3) by
rocking visiting University City 81-33 in the opening round of
the Santana Coca Cola Classic.
"This team is hard for me to read," Vickery said
of his Sultans, who put four players in double scoring digits
at the Centurions' expense. "I think we can be a real good
team - we have that potential. Lots of kids played well tonight,
everybody got to play."
COURTNEY ASH set the pace, hitting four 3-pointers en route to
a game-high 16 points. The senior guard also logged 6 steals and
grabbed 5 rebounds.
ROBIN APPLEBY added 14 points, 5 steals and made 7 deflections,
while HEATHER THOMAS tossed in a dozen points and handed out 5
assists. AMIE LEACH contributed 10 points and grabbed a game-high
6 rebounds.
Other Santana scoring: Jordan Franey 9, Shae Bass 8, Margeaux
Bass 7, Maria DeBarrows 5.
VALHALLA 46, CLAIREMONT 27 - Sophomore CHELSEA KITCHENS
scored 16 points and grabbed 21 rebounds Wednesday (Dec. 5) as
the Norsemen opened the season with a convincing victory over
the visiting Chieftains in the Granite Hills Sportland Classic.
"Chelsea was strong in the paint tonight, she has worked
hard this past off-season and the numbers show it (21 boards),"
Valhalla coach ROBERT WILSON said. "She was the catalyst
to our out-rebounding Clairemont 56-32 on the night."
Kitchens connected on 5 of 7 shots from the floor and netted 6
free throws. DANIELLE ST. JOHN cleared 12 boards and netted 7
points.
With the exception of some poor free throw shooting (12-29), Wilson
said his Norsemen "played fairly well."
Defensively, Valhalla held Clairemont ace Shantell Braden to 1
point in the first half. She finished with 9 points
- six coming after the issue had been decided.
Valhalla enjoyed its largest lead of 39-15 with 4:30 remaining.
Other Valhalla scoring: Angel Burch 8, Nina Schmidt 6, Adriana
Malone 4, Hannah Gerken 2, Cindy Pan 2, Lauren Sheppard 1.
CHRISTIAN 56, MAR VISTA 24 - The Patriots (1-1) used a balanced scoring attack
paced by senior forward RACHEL EDELEN's 21 points to beach the
visiting Mariners (1-1) in Wednesday's (Dec. 3) second round of
the Granite Hills Sportland Classic.
JAMIE RAY nailed a pair of treys and totaled 12 points for the
evening, while HEATHER MEIER chipped in with 11 points and 6 rebounds.
HOLLY ERICKSON led Christian with 7 rebounds.
"We've played really good defense in the first two games
and rebounded well," noted Christian coach TIM JOLLETT. "That's
what made the difference in the game tonight."
Other Christian scoring: Erickson 6, Grace Garcia 4, Katie Gerlek
2.
SAN DIEGO 67, MOUNT MIGUEL 50 - The Matadors
(1-1) trailed only 33-21 at halftime, but the Charde Houston-led
Cavers began the 3rd quarter with a 10-0 run to put Wednesday's
(Dec. 3) opening round game of the La Jolla Country Day Sweet
16 Invitational in the bag.
GENEVIEVE COSTELLO paced the Matadors with 18 points, 5 assists,
3 rebounds and a pair of steals. JERICA WILLIAMS chimed in with
7 points and 6 rebounds.
Houston led San Diego with 40 points.
Other Mount Miguel scoring, Melody Clayton 9, Kayla Henry 6, Kayla
Huddleston 4, Lashawn Johnson 3, Victoria Murphy 2, Samantha Beasley
1.

Unden knocks down threes as Vaqueros knock
down Orange Glen
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - If the El Capitan Vaqueros are to have the kind of
success coach DARIN CURTIS projects for his team, one of the key
performers will be guard ALISSA UNDEN. The 5-foot-7 senior veteran
was more than the Vaqueros' floor leader in Tuesday's (Dec. 2)
59-41 season-opening Bronco Invitational victory over Orange Glen,
as she notched 19 points - 15 of which came from above the arc.
"She knows we are counting on her for leadership, but she
was on fire with her shooting," Curtis said.
Unden nailed 7 of 10 shots, including all but two of her 7 attempts
from long distance. She also logged 4 assists, 3 steals and 4
rebounds.
As anyone who follows El Capitan girls basketball knows, the Vaqueros
have a set of twin towers to rival any in San Diego County. Six-foot-3
HEATHER MOLZEN netted 8 of 13 shots from the floor and 2 of 4
free throws for 18 points. A 4.0 student, Molzen also secured
10 rebounds.
Six-foot-1 sophomore ALLISON DUFFY, who missed a large segment
of the second half due to foul problems, scored 17 points and
grabbed 17 rebounds.
She was replaced on the floor by 5-7 freshman ASHLEY ALDERTON,
who did not score but was a defensive force.
"When Allison got into foul trouble, Ashley gave us some
solid minutes guarding (Orange Glen junior Tori Morrisette),"
Curtis said.
"Even though we didn't get a single transition basket, our
defense held them in check all night. Part of that was we had
to call off the press when Allison got into foul trouble."
Other El Capitan scoring: Mallorie Montgomery 5.
WEST HILLS 75, MADISON 31 - Remember the name MUAAU
NADERHOFF. The 5-foot-10 West Hills freshman center canned 8 of
12 shots from the floor and all 4 of her free throw attempts for
20 points as the Wolf Pack devoured the Warhawks in the Grossmont
Tournament Tuesday (Dec. 2) on the Foothillers' floor.
Naderhoff also snared 10 rebounds and handed out a pair of assists.
West Hills junior DANIELLE EDMONDSON scored a game-high 23 points,
giving the 5-foot-7 forward 38 points in two starts. She also
corralled 10 rebounds and made 4 steals.
Senior guard CAITLIN WEISS dished out 8 assists while hitting
4 of 8 shots from the floor for an 8-point outing.
"We started out slow," said Weiss, noting that the Pack
was holding only a 14-10 first quarter advantage. "Then we
picked it up (with a 22-7 edge in the 2nd quarter) to pull away.
It's all about the team comes first."
Other West Hills scoring: Jessica Urban 8, Samantha Ramsey 6,
Aime Cordeiro 6, Caramie Huntington 5, Chelsey Howard 4,.
GROSSMONT 51, EL CENTRO SOUTHWEST 31 - The
Foothillers defeated the Southwest Eagles in opening round action
of the Grossmont Classic Tournament Tuesday night (Dec. 2).
The Hillers broke the game open in the 2nd quarter, outscoring
the Eagles 26-6 behind some tenacious defense and the hot hands
of junior point guard JACLYN GOLDBARG and senior center MARISA
MOHAN.
Goldbarg led the Hiller attack with a game-high 17 points, including
a trio of 3-pointers. Mohan was a monster on the boards, collecting
14 caroms to go with her 15 points.
Grossmont also received major contributions from two newcomers.
Junior forward, BREE HEMINGWAY scored 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting,
while gathering 6 rebounds. Freshman guard MICHELLE GONZALES added
7 points and a couple of steals in her coming-out party.
Other Grossmont scoring: Samantha Mohan 2.
HELIX 47, SWEETWATER 20 - These youthful Highlanders
may be the surprise team of the season. Despite not having a single
senior on its 11-player roster, Helix swatted Sweetwater with
relative ease in Tuesday's (Dec. 2) season opening Grossmont Tournament
victory.
By the time the Red Devils converted their first basket, Helix
was sitting on a 13-1 lead early in the 2nd quarter. Wholesale
substitutions followed as the Highlanders breezed to the finish
line.
Sophomore DIANA LEASAU (14 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals)
paved the way to victory lane for Helix. CHASITY TOILOLO (11 points,
13 rebounds, 5 blocks) was a force in the middle. MELE LEASAU,
the 5-foot-11 freshman sister of Diana, crashed the board for
9 rebounds.
Helix point guard RACQUEL PRIMAS punched in a pair of 3-pointers
on her way to an 8-point night, while grabbing 4 rebounds, dealing
4 assists and recording 4 steals.
Other Helix scoring: Ashley Penn 8, Mallorie Brown
2, Mele Leasau 2, Sharika Thompson 2.
GRANITE HILLS 54, MONTGOMERY 22 - Depth will be the strong
suite at Granite Hills this year, and coach JAY ROWLETT sees that
as a plus for the Eagles.
"We're all pretty even this year," he said. "We
have 10 players - one, KATRENA GABARDI, is out (for the year with
a knee injury) - and all nine of the rest played tonight. This
is the most even team - nobody is going to average 20 points.
We're going to have a lot of different scorers this year."
And all nine Eagles scored in Tuesday's (Dec. 2) Granite Hills
Sportland Classic romp over the visiting Aztecs. AMY HOYT (11
points), MEAGAN ST. JOHN (10) and JENNIFER WHITMOYER (10) all
reached double scoring digits. Freshman MARNESHA HALL led the
Eagles on the boards with 9 rebounds, while returning all-leaguer
JEANNIE CASE collected 5 steals.
Other Granite Hills scoring: Morgan Sabala 6, Case 6, Hall 4,
Amanda McCurdy 4, Ashley Lovett 2, Joy Edwards 1.
VISTA 46, CHRISTIAN 34 - The Patriots put the heat
on the visiting Vista Panthers, darting to an 11-2 first-quarter
lead in Tuesday's (Dec.2) season opener of the Granite Hills Sportland
Classic.
However, Christian caved in during the middle two quarters, as
the Panthers claimed a 39-12 scoring edge.
Senior Nikki Mercado led the Vista comeback with a trio of 3-pointers
and four free throws for 13 points.
RACHEL EDELEN, the Harbor League MVP as a junior, paced the Patriots
with 13 points. JAMIE RAY rattled in a pair of 3-pointers and
totaled 12 points for the night.
HEATHER MEIER did not have a big scoring night, but cleared a
team-high 9 rebounds. HOLLY ERICKSON added 6 boards for the Patriots.
Other Christian scoring: Katie Gerlek 5, Meier 2, Erickson 2.

Matadors toy with Barons in Sportland Classic
opener
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - The Mount Miguel Matadors lost "franchise"
players Christine Fitzgerald and Ijal Barnes to graduation, but
the talent cupboard is anything but scarce this winter. Make no
mistake about it, coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL's team should be more
than capable of defending their San Diego CIF Division II crown.
The latest edition of the Matadors opened in grand style Monday
(Dec. 1), bowling over host Bonita Vista 70-24 in the first round
of the Granite Hills Sportland Classic.
The returning trio of junior guard GENEVIEVE COSTELLO (14 points),
KAYLA HENRY (11 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals) and defensive standout
JERICA WILLIAMS (11 points, 6 steals, 5 assists, 4 rebounds) guided
the Matadors to leads of 20-5, 40-12 and 53-21.
Mount Miguel's trademark pressure defense was in full swing, forcing
the Barons into 41 turnovers.
LASHAWN JOHNSON, a 5-foot-9 freshman forward, added 9 points,
6 steals, 4 rebounds and 3 assists in her Mount Miguel varsity
debut. TAVASHA YARBROUGH, a 5-9 sophomore forward, yanked down
a team-best 7 rebounds, dumped in 5 points and made a pair of
steals.
Other Mount Miguel scoring: Melody Clayton 6, Victoria Murphy
5, Kayla Huddleston 2.
WEST HILLS 51, CRAWFORD 14 - The Wolf Pack, under new head
coach CARLOS MOSS, spun two shutout quarters in Monday's (Dec.
1) Granite Hills Sportland Classic season-opening victory over
the visiting the Colts.
"It was a good victory --- a great way to start the season,"
said the Wolf Pack's junior team captain, DANIELLE EDMONDSON,
who nailed 6 of 9 shots from the field, including a 3-pointer
to share game-high scoring honors of 15 points with teammate CAITLIN
WEISS.
West Hills shot 44 percent from the field (18-for 41) against
the outmanned Colts. Weiss paved the way, netting 7 of 12 shots
from the field including one trey.
The pack led only 14-8 after one quarter and then blanked Crawford
in two round two to tgake a 26-8 advantage by the break. West
Hills, which logged 36 steals, blanked the Ponies in the final
period to seal the impressive romp.
Other West Hills scoring: Jessica Urban 8, Chelsey Howard 4, Caramie
Huntington 2, Kylee Krings 2, Muaau Naderhoff 2.

Cougars drought extends to 27 after 0-4
start
By John O. Rollo - Special to
EastCountySports.com
CORONADO - The struggles remain for the
Steele Canyon girls' basketball team.
The Lady Cougars, in the outset of its second season of varsity
competition,
continued its search for its first-ever victory Saturday (Nov.
29) during Day
2 of the Coronado Thanksgiving Classic at Coronado High.
For the second day in a row, Steele Canyon
came out on the short end of a
pair of contests. In the morning event, Valley Center improved
to 3-0 on the
young season by virtue of a 72-21 decision. In the afternoon affair,
Imperial
raised its record to 1-3 with a 57-37 victory over the Lady Cougars.
The twin setbacks dropped Steele Canyon's
early season record to 0-4. Coupled
with their 0-23 record of the 2002-03 season, the losing streak
has reached

Playing without three starters, the Lady
Cougars struggled early against
Valley Center. The Jaguars jumped out to a 21-2 lead after the
first eight
minutes of the contest. They stretched their advantage to 40-7
at halftime as Steele
Canyon managed to covert just two of its 23 field attempts during
the half.
All that remained in doubt was the final score.
Point guard CELESTE MARTINS led Steele Canyon
with 8 points. TIFFANIE CROSS,
the team's lone senior, and ALEXIS ROBINSON each pulled down 6
rebounds, while
KELLY BOOZEL retrieved 5 caroms.

were outscored 23-2 in the second half of their season opening
loss in the Coronado Thanksgiving Tournament.
"We were missing three starters," Steele Canyon coach
FRANK QUINONES said. "And then we had some foul problems.
As it was, we dominated Southwest on the boards (although no individual
totals were reported)."
Scoring for Steele Canyon were: Tiffanie Cross 10, Alexis Robinson
3, Kelly Boozel 3, Daniella Haynes 3.
SERRA 64, STEELE CANYON 22 - The Conquistadors sprinted
to a 23-5 first-quarter advantage and never looked back. Junior
guard Phynique Allen poured in a game-high 24 points - including
a trio of three-pointers and 3 of 4 free throws - to pace Serra
(2-0).
"We knew how good Serra is," Quinones said. "We
played intimidated and scared."
Steele Canyon scoring: Celeste Martins 9, Adrianna Ussery 6, Tiffanie
Cross 5, Alexis Robinson 2.
Despite the two losses, Quinones "believes we can win 7 to
10 games this year." That would be a marked improvement over
last year's inaugural season.
The tournament resumes Saturday (Nov. 29), with Steele Canyon
facing Valley Center at 11 a.m. and Imperial at 2:20 p.m. Both
games are at Coronado.

Vaqueros on short end of 19-1 game-ending
Bishop's run at CIF preseason opener
EastCountySports.com
SAN DIEGO - The El Capitan Vaqueros could
only take solace that Wednesday's
(Nov. 26) game was just an exhibition, watching their 10-point
lead evaporate
after The Bishop's Knights closed the game on a 19-1 run over
the final four
minutes, to take the opening game of the San Diego CIF Tip-Off
Classic
quadruple-header at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion, 50-42.
"No one was thinking about the game
- the team wasn't prepared to play," said
forward ALLISON DUFFY, who scored 8 points and grabbed a game-high
13
rebounds. "Everyone's new on the court - it's a whole new
team - so it will
take some time putting everything together."
Junior center HEATHER MOLZEN paced El Capitan
with 11 points, while sophomore
guard MALLORIE MONTGOMERY added 10, including a reverse lay-up
and a 3-point
basket over consecutive possessions, giving the Vaqueros a 41-31
lead with
3:57 to play.
However, a Montgomery foul shot would be
the team's lone point down the
stretch, as Briana Gonzalez scored seven of her 11 points during
The Bishop's'
streak, including the go-ahead foul shots with 55.6 seconds left.
Although played under "game-like"
conditions, the quarters were shortened
from regulation 8-minutes to 7-minute quarters to qualify for
scrimmage status.
