Duffy, Molzen tower over Wolf Pack as Vaqueros
roll
EastCountySports.com
(Updated) LAKESIDE- In girls basketball, size is as valuable as
speed. In the case of No. 4-ranked El Capitan, few can stand up
to the Vaqueros' ALLISON DUFFY and HEATHER MOLZEN.
The 6-foot-1 sophomore Duffy dusted visiting West Hills with 30
points (14 field goals, two free throws), 22 rebounds, 3 assists
and a pair of steals as the Vaqueros slapped a 71-45 Grossmont
North League defeat on the challenging Wolf Pack Tuesday (Jan.
27) at El Capitan.
Six-foot-3 junior center Molzen wasn't too bad herself, as she
gathered 26 points, 12 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists and 2 blocks
as El Capitan (17-2, 4-0) won its 7th straight.
Few teams in the nation have a better 1-2 inside punch than these
Vaqueros.
Another ingredient to the success of this team is the play of
ALISSA UNDEN, the only senior on the squad. Unden has been on
the mark lately, as she was against a young, but talented West
Hills club (13-8, 1-2).
Proving her game extends beyond that of accurate shooting, Unden
mustered up 9 assists and 9 rebounds to go along with a pair of
treys in an 8-point outing.
Sophomore MORGAN CRAIG chimed in with 6 points, 6 rebounds, 5
steals and 4 assists for El Capitan.
DANIELLE EDMONDSON led West Hills with 12 points, 4 rebounds and
3 steals. Teammate CAITLIN WEISS contributed 11 points, while
CARAMIE HUNTINGTON served up 8 points and 5 assists.
GROSSMONT 72, EL CAJON VALLEY 43 - Behind the torrid outside
shooting of senior LAURA FELICE, the visiting Grossmont Foothillers
steamrollered the El Cajon Valley Braves in Grossmont North League
action Tuesday night (Jan. 27).
The Braves opened the game quickly as RAWAA PATROS and TYNISHA
SMITH led the charge. With both teams vying for their first league
win, it was the Braves who took control early as they jumped to
an 11-3 edge. Patros scored 7 of her team high 20 points in the
1st quarter and it looked as if the Braves would hold the upper
hand.
However, it was Felice who set the tone of things to come, canning
3 deep ones to bring the Hillers back to a 14-11 deficit as the
1st quarter ended.
"Laura's been shooting well of late," said a pleased
Grossmont coach, WALLEY YEAKLE. "We've seen her get hot like
this before, so after those first ones went in, everyone started
looking to get her the ball."
The senior forward didn't disappoint as she buried 8 of 13 from
behind the arc. Felice finished with a season high 29 points and
upped her total of 3-balls to 49 on the season.
The 2nd quarter opened up the same as the first one ended with
Felice hitting another 3. Grossmont freshman KENDRA MYERS did
her fair share of damage as well, scoring all 6 of her points
in the quarter. Myers also had a big night on the glass, gathering
9 boards.
The 3rd quarter saw the Braves make a run as TYNISHA SMITH and
TASHIANA FOSTER each hit 3 pointers. Smith finished with 10 points
on the night for the Braves, who suffered their 11th straight
loss.
The Hillers answered with sophomore SAM MOHAN as she poured in
12 of her 21 points and upped the Hiller margin to 18 to end the
quarter.
Spreading the ball around nicely, the Hillers weren't going to
be denied in the 4th, as BRETTE HENDERSON and CHRISTINE SULLIVAN
each scored 4 points. Freshman, MICHELLE GONZALEZ added a basket
to bring her total to 8 on the night. Gonzalez also collected
9 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals as the Foothillers coasted
in for the final margin.
GRANITE HILLS 51, MONTE VISTA 36 - In the battle
for second place in the Grossmont South League Tuesday night (Jan.
27), the visiting Eagles overcame a 6-0 deficit and embarked on
a 19-2 run to take control.
"This was the best defensive game we've played in quite a
while," Granite Hills coach
JAY ROWLETT said. "We created a lot of turnovers and were
able to capitalize on them at the offensive end."
Freshman forward MARNESHA HALL coined a double-double of 11 points
and 10 rebounds to lead Granite Hills (12-8, 3-1).
Senior JEANNIE CASE contributed 11 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals
to the winner's cause, while freshman MORGAN SABALA tossed in
9 points, claimed 5 rebounds, filched 4 passes and handed out
a pair of assists.
Monte Vista's TANISHA HOWELL continued her torrid shooting, scoring
a game-high 18 points. The senior standout netted 10 of 11 free
throws against Granite Hills and has made 18 of 19 charity shots
in her last two starts and 36 of 42 attempts (.857 percent) over
the last eight games.
Not to be overlooked were Howell's 11 rebounds and 5 steals.
MOUNT MIGUEL 55, VALHALLA 17 - There seems to be
no stopping these Mount Miguel Matadors who breezed to their 30th
consecutive Grossmont South League victory by dunking visiting
Valhalla in Tuesday's (Jan. 27) action.
Despite playing without injured point guard GENEVIEVE COSTELLO,
the No. 5-ranked Matadors (15-5, 4-0) had little difficulty dominating
the Norsemen (9-10, 1-3). Defense was the key as the Matadors
limited Valhalla to two points in each of the middle two quarters.
JERICA WILLIAMS and KAYLA HENRY stepped up to lead Mount Miguel
offensively. Williams hit a trio of three-pointers on her way
to a season-high 17 points. She also garnered 10 rebounds, 5 assists
and 5 steals.
Henry rang up 15 points and 8 rebounds.
Injuries and eligibility problems have plagued Valhalla.
"We are very limited in what we can do on the offensive end,"
Valhalla coach ROBERT WILSON said. "If we look at the positive,
we had our best free throw percentage in a game this season at
70 percent (7-for-10)."
CHELSEA KITCHENS led Valhalla with 9 points, 8 rebounds and 4
steals.
CORONADO 48, CHRISTIAN 38 - Underdog Christian High
missed its chance to take the Harbor League lead Tuesday (Jan.
27) as the Patriots fought a continual uphill battle before succumbing
to the visiting Islanders.
"We played awesome -- I was really proud of the girls,"
Christian coach TIM JOLLETT said. "We've been doing a great
job giving the other teams just one shot. Both HOLLY (ERICKSON)
and HEATHER (MEIER) did a great job rebounding (11 rebounds apiece)
against more mature, physical teams."
After spotting Coronado (13-6, 3-0) a 13-4 first quarter edge,
the Patriots closed the gap to two points by intermission. But
Coronado gained the upper hand in each of the final two periods
to prove its supremacy.
RACHEL EDELEN paced the Patriots with 12 points, while Erickson
netted 11 and JAMIE RAY popped in 10.
"Rachel and Jamie showed great senior leadership," Jollett
added. "We never turned the ball over. Sometimes you
play a great game and still lose, and that's what we did today."
HELIX 72, STEELE CANYON 21 - With the San Diego CIF
Division I playoffs on their minds, the host Helix Highlanders
avalanched hapless Steele Canyon in Tuesday's (Jan. 27) Grossmont
South League action.
DIANA LEASAU hit 11 of 20 shots from the field en route to a 24-point
effort as the Highlanders (14-8, 2-2) hammered the Cougars (3-18,
0-4). The sophomore guard, who has a personal high of 37 points,
also handed out 6 assists, pocketed 4 steals, grabbed 4 rebounds
and swatted away two SC shots.
ASHLEY PENN punched in 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting, while CHASITY
TOILOLO collected 11 points and 8 rebounds. RACQUEL PRIMAS chimed
in with 10 points and MELE LEASAU blocked 4 shots.
This game was over almost before it started as Helix jumped out
to a 13-0 lead and piled on the points from there.
CASSIE GLOVER led SC with 6 points.
Steele Canyon provided no other information
in the lopsided loss.

Santana wakes up to put away upset-minded
Southwest
EastCountySports.com
SANTEE - Sure, it was just a Monday night (Jan. 26) non-league
with little hanging in the balance. None the less, Santana coach
WADE VICKERY was anything but pleased by the performance of his
quintet. After a free-for-all first half, the usually disciplined
Sultans (16-4) regained their poise and raced on a 21-4 scoring
spree in the 3rd quarter, continuing on for a 72-40 non-league
victory over visiting Southwest of San Diego. This was hardly
the tune-up Vickery had in mind for his Sultans, who play Grossmont
North League rival El Cajon Valley on Friday (Jan. 30) before
taking on Eastlake during Saturday's (Jan.31) five-game Vaquero
Shootout of San Diego County's best at El Capitan.
Despite Vickery's displeasure, Santana gained a 31-25 halftime
lead over the upset-minded Raiders (10-9). It was hardly
something the veteran coach was ready to celebrate, however.
"I was pretty angry about how we played in the first half,"
Vickery said. "We played lethargic and without interest."
Up stepped Santana senior guard COURTNEY ASH to douse the flames
in the 3rd quarter.
"We came out harder in the second half," said Ash. "We
were just giving it our all on defense. The players pumped it
up and we played team defense, with good rotation and helping
each other out."
Freshman SHAE BASS sparked the Santana revival, scoring 10 of
her 14 points in the 3rd period.
"Courtney was the key in that she energized us with her defense
in the 3rd quarter," Vickery said. "That carried over
to the Bass sisters, who picked us up offensively."
Shae Bass finished with 14 points, while senior MARGEAUX BASS
handed out 11 assists and claimed 5 steals.
Not to be overlooked was JORDAN FRANEY, who led Santana with 25
points. The 5-foot-10 sophomore connected on 8 of 15 shots from
the field and 9 of 11 free throws. She also cleared 6 rebounds,
had a hand in 7 deflections and recorded 5 steals.
Ash's totals included 9 points, 7 steals, 3 rebounds and one assist.
LOOKING AHEAD
The star-studded five-game Vaquero Shootout set begins Saturday
at 12:30 p.m. when Grossmont takes on Clairemont. The classic
marquee continues at 2:15 when Granite Hills duels University
City. The remainder of the schedule is: Santana- Eastlake at 4
p.m; Mount Miguel-Bishop's at 5:45 and El Capitan vs. Mission
Bay at 7:30 p.m.
Girls basketball doesn't get much better than this.

This version of Vaqueros finally gets win
over Sultans to take control in North
EastCountySports.com
SANTEE - In El Capitan's world of tall timber, Vaqueros senior
guard ALISSA UNDEN often gets lost in the publicity shuffle. It's
not that Vaqueros coach DARIN CURTIS doesn't realize the value
of his only senior. But the continued domination of El Capitan
foes by 6-foot-3 junior HEATHER MOLZEN and 6-1 sophomore ALLISON
DUFFY more often than not hogs the headlines. In Friday's (Jan.
23) showdown with perennial powerhouse Santana, the Vaqueros managed
to use a blend of both their inside and outside game to submarine
the Sultans, 50-38.
The Vaqueros (16-2, 3-0), who are allowing just 39.6 points per
game, rolled to their sixth straight win as they defeated Santana
for first time in five years while snapping the Sultans' current
7-game winning streak.
Unden clicked on 4 of 9 shots from three-point distance on her
way to a 14-point outing.
"When we are able to hit outside it forces the other team
to guard us," said Unden. "It opens up our middle."
That middle consisted of Molzen (14 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals)
and Duffy (16 points, 18 rebounds, 6 steals, 2 blocks).
"Our big girls are very athletic," Curtis said. "You
can't get very many good looks at the basket against us."
A steal and basket by Duffy, followed by a Molzen three-point-play
propelled El Capitan into a 27-14 lead with 1:11 left in the first
half. Santana (15-4, 2-1), which saw its seven-game winning streak
end, never drew closer than 8 points thereafter.
"When we lost to them here last year it was kind of a headcase
thing," Duffy said. "We came out with a lot more confidence
tonight."
ROBIN APPLEBY led the Sultans with 12 points.
"This was no fluke," Santana coach WADE VICKERY said,
noting his Sultans were unable to score inside and turned the
ball over 23 times.
GRANITE HILLS 48, HELIX 46 - Granite Hills moved
into a tie for second place in the Grossmont South League by squeezing
out a narrow victory over host Helix on Friday night (Jan. 23).
"Our young players, (sophomore) MEAGAN ST. JOHN and (freshman)
MORGAN SABALA really stepped up for us tonight," said Eagles
coach JAY ROWLETT. "And our seniors really buckled down.
AMY HOYT and JEANNIE CASE both had a good game."
St. John led the Eagles (11-8, 2-1) in scoring with 12 points
and rebounds with 8, while Sabala netted 10 points.
"Helix was up the whole game," Rowlett remarked. "We
aren't playing well right now - we got lucky tonight."
Helix, playing without leading rebounder and No. 2 scorer CHASITY
TOILOLO due to a previous game ejection, missed a shot with 8
seconds left and Granite Hills ran the clock out to nail down
the victory.
"They were better than us down the stretch," Helix assistant
WILLIE HATHAWAY said.
DIANA LEASAU scored a game-high 19 points, grabbed 9 rebounds,
handed out 5 assists and recorded 4 steals for Helix. RACQUEL
PRIMAS chimed in with 11 points, 4 assists and 4 rebounds for
the Highlanders (13-8, 1-2).
Hathaway praised SHARIKA THOMPSON, stepping into the starting
lineup in place of Toilolo, scoring 8 points. But it was her defense
on JENNIFER WHITMOYER that impressed the coaches. Whitmoyer finished
with just 5 points.
"Thompson's defense was marvelous," Hathaway said. "She
held Whitmoyer to 2 points (the other 3-point coming against a
reserve)."
Helix led 40-39 after three periods, but couldn't hang on.
"We're looking forward to the rematch," Hathaway said.
MOUNT MIGUEL 60, MONTE VISTA 37 - It took only three
disappointing minutes for Matadors coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL to pull
his starters, upset with the lack of effort on defense in Friday's
(Jan. 23) Grossmont South League game.
"We were very upset, too," said JERICA WILLIAMS, one
of the five sent to the bench. "We're the leaders on the
team and are supposed to set example for the players on the bench."
The Mount Miguel reserves did well, yet the team still trailed
Monte Vista early in the second period, 17-15. Not for long, though.
Upon the return of the starting quintet, the Matadors (14-5, 3-0)
more resembled their stature as defending San Diego CIF Division
II champions. They closed the half on a 17-0 run, then pushed
the streak to 29 consecutive points before the Monarchs (13-6,
2-1) scored again, as Mount Miguel raced to what became an easy
triumph.
"We had to let Monte Vista know that they can't be on the
same court with us," added Williams, who scored 11 of the
28 points on the run en route to finishing with 13 points. "We
had to show them, so we came out with more hype and took command."
Entrenching themselves on defense was the key. Mount Miguel, which
has won 29 league games in succession, forced three shot clock
violations in the 3rd period, while MONIQUE CLAYTON and VICTORIA
MURPHY each took-a-charge for another turnover to keep the Monarchs
from adding to their count on the scoreboard for an astounding
10:06. And when Williams added a 3-ball, a one-time 2-point Monte
Vista lead flipped into a 43-17 Matadors margin.
"Credit Monte Vista for coming in with a nice game plan,"
noted Matadors coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL. "But when our starters
came back in, it was like two different games."
KAYLA HENRY paced Mount Miguel with a season-high 23 points and
15 rebounds, while Williams netted 13 points and KAYLA HUDDLESTON,
TAVASHA YARBROUGH and LASHAWN JOHNSON scored six points each.
The Monarchs were led by forward TASHANA HOWELL, who scored more
than half of her team's points with 19 while hauling in nine boards.
Otherwise, the team shot just 11-of-43 from the floor.
Howell sank a pair of foul shots with no time left in the first
period giving Monte Vista a surprising 10-9 lead. Howell then
dropped a 5-footer off a SHALIA BOHANNON pass with 5:25 left in
the half before the Matadors explosion occurred.
"We came out sloppy," Sandoval said. "I took out
the starters with 4 minutes to go in the 1st quarter. Our subs
played the rest of the quarter and the first 2 minutes of the
2nd.
Midway through the 2nd quarter GENEVIEVE COSTELLO suffered what
appeared to be a deep bone bruise just above the knee. She played
only a few minutes of the 3rd quarter and not all in the 4th.
"We just played horrible defense," Sandoval grumbled.
"Howell surprised us a little bit (scoring 19 points). Next
time we'll put somebody on her."
Monte Vista assistant coach CHRISTY GREENE observed "We started
out great but ran out of gas. Henry killed us inside. Howell had
a very good game - she was aggressive and took the ball to the
hole. Mount Miguel is in better shape than we are. They took advantage
and took the ball to the basket better."
CHRISTIAN 63, HOOVER 31 - Although Christian
High coach TIM JOLLETT won't admit it publicly, he has to believe
that his Patriots (9-9, 2-0) have a shot at winning the Harbor
League championship. They, of course, will get a clearer picture
of that possibility when they host pre-season favorite and defending
champion Coronado on Tuesday (Jan. 27) at the Ryan Athletic Center
at 5 p.m.
Senior RACHEL EDELEN scored a career-high 27 points and still
found time to pass out 6 assists as the Patriots hammered Hoover
(2-17, 0-2) with their highest point production of the season
Friday night (Jan. 23) at the RAC.
HOLLY ERICKSON muscled together a nifty double-double of 16 points
and 13 rebounds for Christian, which also received a 10-point
effort from HEATHER MEIER.
Explaining his team's mood and mental preparation, Jollett said,
"We played last night (Thursday, defeating Santa Fe Christian
40-37). It seems that towards the end of the year, we play better
on the second night. Tonight we just kinda built on last night's
game."
WEST HILLS 64, EL CAJON VALLEY 31 - The Wolf Pack
erupted for 24 points in the second quarter and then cruised to
its 7th win in the last eight starts by blowing out the Braves
in Friday's (Jan. 23) Grossmont North League action in Santee.
Twelve members of the West Hills cast contributed points to the
Wolf Pack's latest conquest. MUAAU NADERHOFF was the leader of
the Pack with 15 points, hitting 5-for-9 shots from the field
and 5-for-5 accuracy from the foul line. The talented freshman
also grabbed 7 rebounds and logged 5 steals.
DALIA GHANDOUR led West Hills' supporting cast with a career-high
12 points. CAITLIN WEISS did not have a major scoring night, but
contributed 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals, while AMIE CORDIERO
notched 8 points and 7 steals.
DANIELLE EDMONDSON pitched in with 7 points, 6 rebounds and 3
steals for West Hills.
Nobody scored more than 6 points for El Cajon Valley (3-14, 0-2).
VALHALLA 33, STEELE CANYON 24 - ADRIANNA MALONE, making
her first start at point guard of the season, scored 14 points
Friday night (Jan. 23) as the Norsemen (9-9, 1-2) staved off upset-minded
Steele Canyon in a Grossmont South League game.
Malone, replacing the ineligible ANGEL BIRCH, hit the first of
her three 3-pointers in the opening quarter and added a deuce
to give Valhalla a 5-0 lead. Steele Canyon didn't score until
one minute into the second quarter as the Norsemen marched to
a 20-5 lead by intermission.
CASSIE GLOVER led Steele Canyon (3-17, 0-3) with 13 points, 12
rebounds and 3 steals.

Patriots shut down Sante Fe at key interval
to improve playoff status
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - Christian High took a step toward securing a higher
seed for the San Diego CIF Division IV playoffs after rallying
past visiting Santa Fe Christian, 40-37, Thursday (Jan. 22) at
Ryan Athletic Center. Senior RACHEL EDELEN powered the Patriots
(8-9) with 14 points, as Christian saw one lead wither away, but
finished strong to prevent a second lead from disappearing to
hang on to the victory.
Edelen, who earned the Harbor League MVP as a junior, is well
on course for a repeat honor. She scored 9 points in the pivotal
second half.
"A lot of times, we play to the opponent's level," noted
Edelen, who added 10 rebounds and 7 blocks. "We had a 10-point
lead - lost it, so at halftime we discussed it."
A 16-6 lead vanished when the visiting Eagles (10-6 overall) scored
the final 14 points of the half to carry a 20-16 score at intermission.
However, Christian responded by blanking Santa Fe for nearly eight
full minutes, outscoring the Birds 21-7 to regain a 10-point cushion
with 5:18 remaining, capped by a JAMIE RAY short jumper.
"We came out hard and beat them," added Edelen, who
noted her team's strong man defense was the difference.
Santa Fe guard Kelly Leppert nailed a pair of long jumpers, including
a 3-ball, to trim the lead to four. Then Abbey Wright added a
pair of foul shots to move within 39-37 with 13.1 seconds to go.
However, Patriots forward HEATHER MEIER converted a free throw
with 11.5 left, but after missing the second attempt, she managed
to hustle inside for a tie-up and gain the ball on the alternating
possession.
Meier also grabbed a key offensive board in the final minute after
a teammate missed a foul shot, keeping the ball away from Santa
Fe, preventing them from an opportunity to force overtime.
"We finally woke up," noted Ray, who scored five of
Christian's final six points to finish with 12 points. "We
looked at the scoreboard and realized we only scored 16 points
in the first half (to trail by four). That made us wake up and
we then played our game."
The Patriots' defense keyed the turnaround. After SFC opened the
half with a 3-point goal, Christian scored the final 14 of the
final 16 points in the third period, then scored the first seven
points of the fourth.
HOLLY ERICKSON added 7 points and 11 rebounds for Christian, which
figures to contend for the Harbor League crown again this year.

scored a season-high 25 points -- spiked by 7 three-point connections
- as the Foothillers fell to the Falcons Thursday (Jan. 22) in
a non-league game at Scripps Ranch.
Despite Felice's heroics, the Foothillers (8-12) found themselves
on the short end of a 25-9 first-quarter score. Grossmont was
never in serious contention thereafter.
SAM MOHAN, who netted 4 of 7 field goal tries, finished with 10
points for the Hillers. Grossmont sisters ANNIE GONZALEZ chipped
in with 7 points and 3 assists, while MICHELLE GONZALEZ added
6 rebounds and 2 points.

Sultans end Wolf Pack's six-game win streak
EastCountySports.com
The so-called "pre-showdown" in Santee was simply another
blowout victory for coach WADE VICKERY and his Santana Sultans.
Sure, the Sultans were aware of West Hills' six-game winning streak
and recent appearance in the various polls. But those facts only
seemed to motivate Vickery's aggressive quintet during Tuesday's
(Jan. 20) Grossmont North League entanglement at West Hills. The
result was another rout of a quality team as the Sutlans sailed
to an easy 71-38 victory.
While Santana's finish was strong, the Sultans' start was hit-and-miss
against the determined Wolf Pack.
Perhaps, Santana - winner of 18 league titles in the last 24 years
- was peeking ahead to Friday's (Jan. 23) battle royale against
El Capitan in Lakeside at 5:30 p.m.
Not so says Vickery. The Sultans' focus Tuesday was on West Hills.
"We couldn't pass them up after we saw them beat Granite
Hills," noted Sultans freshman SHAE BASS. "And since
they are a rival anyway, we had to make a point right away."
Point made.
The No. 6-ranked Sultans broke open an early 8-all deadlock with
a 15-point run Tuesday, then opened the second half by scoring
the first 16 points, racing past the host Wolf Pack.
Bass scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half, including eight
in the first period to put the game out of reach early. The versatile
performer enjoys her current role, which allows her to roam the
court in various capacities.
"I play the '3' here, so sometimes I'm a guard and sometimes
I play inside - I can almost go anywhere I want," noted Bass.
Against the Wolf Pack, Bass mainly played inside or along the
baseline. After opening the game's scoring with a short jumper,
her next five baskets came with hard work inside, getting position
inside for layups or follow shots after grabbing an offensive
rebound.
Joining Bass inside was sophomore JORDAN FRANEY, who scored 11
first-half points en route to a 15-point performance.
Improving West Hills
(12-7, 0-1) saw its six-game winning streak snapped due to the
Pack's inability to make the routine pass to offset Santana's
picking-up at full- or three-quarters court with its man pressure.
"This was a playoff game for us," noted Wolf Pack coach
CARLOS MOSS. "Although we won't be playing Santana in the
first round, we'll play a team like Santana, so this was an important
contest for us. We improved a lot, but we now know what we need
to do to get ready for the playoffs -- we know exactly what we
need to work on."
Playing at a controlled pace, West Hills stayed even with the
Sultans for the first four minutes. When the Pack tried to push
the ball upcourt, however, it rolled right back at them in a wave
of turnovers, adding up to 34 for the game.
"We were 8-8 at the beginning of the game," recalled
assistant coach SIG CHABROWSKI, "then we lost our composure."
Santana led 40-22 at the half, and then blew the game open with
a 21-3 blast in the 3rd quarter.
"We had a good defensive effort," Vickery said. "We
had good ball movement early and then settled down and got everybody
involved."
CARAMIE HUNTINGTON led West Hills with 9 points and 4 blocks.
AIMIE CORDIERO chimed in with 8 points and 3 steals.

EL CAPITAN 72, GROSSMONT 28 - When it comes to inside muscle,
nobody in East County is more physically gifted than El Capitan.
Call it a cliché handle if you'd like, but the physical
might generated by 6-foot-2 HEATHER MOLZEN and 6-foot-1 ALLISON
DUFFY is unequalled in East County. The Vaqueros "Twin Towers"
combined for 49 points and 47 rebounds as El Capitan rocked host
Grossmont in Tuesday's (Jan. 20) Grossmont North League mismatch.
Duffy dropped in 14 baskets and 2 of 4 free throws for 30 points,
while collecting 22 rebounds and recording 5 steals.
Molzen was equally as dominating with 19 points, 25 rebounds,
2 steals and 2 blocks.
Not to be overlooked was the work of senior guard ALISSA UNDEN.
Geared primarily to direct the El Capitan offense, Unden banged
in 16 points, ripped off 6 rebounds, passed out 7 scoring serves
and notched 4 steals.
Once the Vaqueros (15-2, 2-0) gained contol by flashing in front
15-2 after one period, thoughts of Friday's (Jan. 23) collision
with Santana began dancing in their heads.
LAURA FELICE led Grossmont with 9 points and 3 rebounds.
MOUNT MIGUEL 59, GRANITE HILLS 34 - If there is to
be a race in the Grossmont South League this season the Matadors'
top challenger has been ticketed to be Granite Hills.
So much for Mount Miguel shaking in its boots.
The Matadors stormed out to a 17-0 lead, leaving the Eagles (10-8,
1-1) in their wake.
"Our defense was pretty much steady all night," Mount
Miguel coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL commented after the Matadors (13-5,
2-0) stretched their league winning streak to 28 games in a row.
KAYLA "Baby Shaq" HENRY was Mount Miguel's guiding light
in this conquest, tossing in 21 points and controlling 13 rebounds.
JERICA WILLIAMS popped in 14 points, snagged 7 rebounds, handed
out 3 assists and nabbed 2 steals, while GENEVIEVE COSTELLO logged
6 assists, 5 steals, grabbed 5 rebounds and scored 8 points for
the streaking Matadors.
JENNIFER WHITMOYER and MORGAN SABALA had 10 apiece to pace the
Eagles. Whitmoyer connected twice from long distance to extend
her East County-leading 3-point shooting total to 50.
HELIX 47, VALHALLA 36 - The visiting Highlanders
kept their post-season playoff hopes burning strong Tuesday (Jan.
20) with a decisive Grossmont South League victory over Valhalla.
Despite losing ace rebounder CHASITY TOILOLO to technical fouls
early in the 2nd quarter, the Highlanders (13-7, 1-1) used a 10-2
3rd quarter rush to subdue the Norsemen (8-9, 0-2).
DIANA LEASAU led Helix with 15 points, 3 blocks, 3 assists, 3
rebounds and 2 assists. RACQUEL PRIMAS added 10 points, 5 assists
and 6 steals, while MELE LEASAU reeled in a team-high 10 rebounds.
CHELSEA KITCHENS led Valhalla with 14 rebounds and 9 points. LAUREN
SHEPPARD added 8 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals.
MONTE VISTA 44, STEELE CANYON 22 - TANISA SHELLEY
scored 15 points and TASHANA HOWELL added 11 points, 8 rebounds
and 2 blocks as the visiting Monarchs 913-5, 2-0) maintained their
share of the Grossmont South League lead by rolling over host
Steele Canyon on Tuesday (Jan. 20). 20).
"We finally started to become aggressive offensively,"
Monte Vista coach SANDY WRIGHT said.
TIFFANIE CROSS paced Steele Canyon (3-16, 0-2) with 11 points.
"We missed 42 shots inside the paint," SC coach FRANK
QUINONES lamented. "Of those, 17 were lay-ups."

Huntington has no time to think, just hit
20-foot game-winner at buzzer for Wolf Pack win
East County Sport.com
EL CAJON - CARAMIE HUNTINGTON was out of choices
when she dribbled nearly the length of the floor with only a handful
of seconds left in Saturday's (Jan. 17) non-league game at Granite
Hills. No time to pass. Just focus and fire. Huntington accomplished
both, as she pulled up to hit a 20-foot jump shot at the buzzer,
hoisting West Hills to a 49-48 overtime victory at Granite Hills.
It was the sixth straight win for West Hills (12-6), which appeared
to have the game won in regulation until the Eagles' JENNIFER
WHITMOYER spun in a lay-up in the waning seconds, forcing the
game into the extra session.
Whitmoyer, who finished with a game-high 17 points, canned her
third 3-pointer of the game to give Granite Hills (10-7) an early
48-45 advantage in overtime.
CAITLIN WEISS, who registered a career-high 21 points, countered
with a bucket for West Hills to make it a one-point game. The
Eagles would later miss three free throws, including the front
end of a one-and-one, thus setting the stage for Huntington's
last-second heroics.
"When Caramie was dribbling down the court the plan was for
her to pass the ball to MUAAU NADERHOFF," West Hills coach
CARLOS MOSS said. "But time was running out as Caramie dribbled
by our bench, so I yelled out to her 'Shoot, just shoot it.'"
Huntington complied and West Hills went home a winner.
"It was really scary," said the 5-foot-3 sophomore.
"I know my team has confidence in me, so I have to have confidence
in myself. When I let (the game-winning) shot go, I thought it
had a pretty good chance."
She was right. No bank, caroms or lucky bounces. Huntington's
shot was dead center.
SWISH!
"Yeah, I've never hit a bigger shot than that," she
said.
Huntington totaled 10 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 steals
and one block.
Naderhoff hauled down 13 rebounds, blocked 2 shots and recorded
3 steals, while DANIELLE EDMONDSON collected 10 caroms and made
4 steals despite going scoreless.
Weiss added 7 rebounds and 3 assists to complement her record
scoring effort.
Granite Hills' woes focused on the free throw line where the Eagles
converted just 4 of 17 chances.
That's what irked Granite Hills coach JAY ROWLETT, who saw his
team force the Wolf Pack into 32 turnovers.
"If you can't do better than that shooting free throws, you
don't deserve to win," he said. "This is a game we should
have won."
EL CAPITAN 49, THE BISHOP'S 42 - In a mirror image of their
first encounter, the team with the huge, double-digit lead would
falter. Fortunately for El Capitan, it was The Bishop's School
that yielded the advantage.
ALLISON DUFFY scored 11 of her game-high 23 points in the 3rd
quarter as the Vaqueros outscored the Knights 22-7 over that 8-minute
stretch to avenge an early season disappointment at the 3rd annual
San Diego Elite Classic Saturday (Jan. 17) at La Jolla Country
Day School.
"This game started like the last one ended," noted Duffy,
who also grabbed 11 rebounds. "But we were finally able to
get it going."
Duffy was speaking of the preseason San Diego CIF Tip-off Classic,
a series of exhibition games among contending teams at USD's Jenny
Craig Pavilion held last November. Granted, that contest didn't
count for the record, but the Vaqueros were not pleased by their
performance.
In that exhibition the Vaqueros wasted a double-digit lead in
the final five minutes. This time, after trailing 20-8 in the
second quarter, El Capitan (14-2) exploded for a massive 31-9
run to claim a 39-29 lead with 7:11 to play.
"They were thinking they had control of this one early,"
noted starting guard MORGAN CRAIG, who failed to score, yet registered
3 key assists down the stretch to prevent The Bishop's from rallying.
"We took care of the ball and got it inside to our big girls."
Duffy's effort was balanced by forward HEATHER MOLZEN, who also
recorded a double-double by finishing with 11 points and 13 boards
to go with 5 blocks.
Bishop's guard Tamika Lipford ignited her side to a quick 14-4
lead, gaining 4 points, 3 steals and 2 assists in the 1st quarter
alone, plus mustering 4 offensive rebounds despite being the shortest
player on the court. Lipford finished with 11 points and eight
steals, but the Vaqueros held the TBS playmaker to just one basket
over the final 15 minutes.
ALISSA UNDEN added 8 points for El Capitan, including 6 in the
3rd quarter when the Vaqueros outscored Bishop's by 15 in a physical
affair.
"They let us play and that's the way we like it," noted
Unden, the lone senior on the roster. "Our big girls stay
out of foul trouble that way, but we can force the ball inside
and score our points."
Unden's steal and breakaway lay-up tied the game at 26-all with
4:24 left in the third, then Molzen and Duffy scored consecutive
baskets on offensive rebounds to give the Vaqueros the lead.
The Bishop's added a foul shot, but then Vaquero reserve forward
ASHLEY ALDERTON picked up a loose ball during a scramble under
the basket, making a lay-up and one for a 33-27 lead with 1:06
left in the 3rd period.
The Knights moved within 43-42 with 2:20 left when Destinee Brooks
dropped a baseline jumper, but El Capitan successfully broke the
press to close the victory with baskets by Duffy and Unden.
MISSION BAY 33, MOUNT MIGUEL 24 - One could count the number
of players not standing around on one hand, as the Buccaneers
outlasted the Matadors in a contest between Top 10 teams at the
San Diego Elite Classic.
However, "elite" would not properly describe this effort
by either team,
"Horrible is more like it," said Matadors guard GENEVIEVE
COSTELLO. "We had, maybe, 3-4 girls doing anything out there,
and Mission Bay may have had only one or two."
However, the Bucs' pair beat an Ace high.
All-County guard Amanda Rego scored 14 points, while 6-foot-4
center Amber Sprague - suffering from a sore back - managed 12
points and a dozen boards to lift Mission Bay (11-3).
Mount Miguel scored just seven points in the second half.
"That's unbelievable," Matadors coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL
said. "Our defense was great, but we couldn't get anything
to fall."
"We tried to slow down their guards' penetration with a 1-2-2
zone," said Mission Bay coach Melissa Baker. "For the
most part it worked, and if they got inside we were able to make
them change their shot."
Sprague, who missed Friday's Western League encounter against
Our Lady of Peace with continuing tightness in her back, blocked
7 shots and helped alter the direction of several others against
smaller Mount Miguel.
"She's a big girl with long arms," added Costello, who
was limited to 2 assists and 2 steals. "But we weren't shooting
the ball well anyway."
"Coach would tell me to dish off if I got inside, but they
would fall back so there weren't a lot of places to go with the
ball."
Costello paced the Matadors (12-5) with 9 points, while forward
KAYLA HENRY added seven, including all four Mount Miguel points
in the fourth. Henry also grabbed 12 rebounds, while JERICA WILLIAMS
scored six, including a 3-ball to account for all of her team's
points in the 3rd quarter.

North League will be familiar battle;
Matadors are odds-on in South
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - History commands that Santana rate as the perennial
favorite in the Grossmont North League. Under the tutelage of
coach WADE VICKERY the Sultans have won 551 games and 18 league
titles in his 24 seasons as the girls' mentor. Counting his five
seasons coaching the Santana boys, Vickery has collected 625 victories.
Although Vickery's girls have captured six straight league crowns,
labeling the Sultans as the favorite this year might be a bit
presumptuous. That honor may fall on the shoulders of an
eager El Capitan squad, which has the talent to unseat the Sultans.
Meanwhile, Mount Miguel is a solid choice to stretch its reign
as the Grossmont South kingpin to four straight seasons.
Here is the predicted order of finish in the Grossmont Conference
league races that begin on Friday (Jan. 16):
1. EL CAPITAN (12-2): The Vaqueros have been bridesmaids
too long. This is their year to celebrate a league championship.
2. SANTANA (13-3): Don't expect the Sultans to concede
anything to the Vaqueros.
3. WEST HILLS (11-6): Although the Wolf Pack rolls into
the league season with wins in 6 of its last 7 starts, chances
of this club challenging for a championship are remote.
4. GROSSMONT (8-9): The loss of do-it-all guard JACLYN
GOLDBARG (knee surgery) ended any title aspiration the Hillers
might have had.
5. EL CAJON VALLEY (3-12): The Braves are totally
overmatched in this league. Any victory would be considered an
upset, so they are looking to play spoilers.
GROSSMONT SOUTH LEAGUE
1. MOUNT MIGUEL (11-4): The Matadors have won 26 straight
league games and are favored to make it a 4-Peat.
2. GRANITE HILLS (9-5): Coach JAY ROWLETT's
Eagles have better offensive balance than a year ago, but don't
have the horses to match strides with the Matadors.
3. HELIX (12-6): Much like the Eagles, the
Highlanders are an improved team gaining experience. If this band
stays together, next year could be a break-out season.
4. VALHALLA (8-7): Defense and rebounding are no
problem here. Putting the ball in the basket is a problem, which
eliminates the Norsemen from keeping up with the fast-pack in
front of them.
5. MONTE VISTA (11-5): Coach SANDY WRIGHT's
Monarchs have already won three more games than a year ago, and
could conceivably climb up a couple notches.
6. STEELE CANYON (3-14): The Cougars have discovered
victory lane three times after a winless maiden voyage.
Still, they are not ready to make a move up the standings ladder.
(01-14-04)
HARBOR LEAGUE
Coach TIM JOLLETT's Christian High Patriots (7-9) get a lot of
mileage out of the octane they carry in their tank, so anything
in the league race is possible. Coronado rates as the favorite,
but the Patriots could finish as high as second place.

Foothillers' Goldbarg will miss remainder
of season after knee surgery
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - Grossmont High coach WALLEY YEAKLE made an announcement
Tuesday night (Jan. 13) that will have significant impact on the
Grossmont North League basketball race. Junior point guard JACLYN
GOLDBARG has undergone arthroscopic knee surgery and will miss
the remainder of the 2003-04 season. Goldbarg suffered the injury
in a Grossmont Tournament game versus Madison on Dec 10.
A returning 1st team All-East County performer, Goldbarg had the
Hillers poised to make a run at a league title this season. Grossmont
opens league play against defending champion Santana on Friday
night (Jan. 16).
"Obviously losing Jaclyn dramatically changes the look of
our team," said a disappointed Yeakle. "Her injury not
only affects our team, but also the balance of the league this
year. We'll still be alright, and our other players will step
up, but when a potential "League Player of the Year"
goes down it certainly changes some of our strategy."
Five games into the season, Goldbarg was averaging 18.8 points
per game, 8 assists, 6 rebs and 3 steals while shooting at a 66%
from the 3-point line and 59 from the field overall.
"The time Jaclyn put in the weight room, on the track, and
in the gym this past off-season was pretty apparent from her early
season performances," said Yeakle. "Knowing Jaclyn's
work ethic, there is no doubt she will return bigger, faster,
stronger, and better next year."

Monarchs' hold off late Valhalla chances
to squeak by with opening win
EastCountySports.com
SPRING VALLEY - Monte Vista's SHALIA BOHANNON stole the ball and
raced in for a lay-up with 2:42 to play, building a 34-28 lead
over Valhalla in Friday's (Jan. 16) Grossmont South League opener.
Then the Monarchs survived a wild ride down the stretch without
scoring another point, yet hung on to edge the visiting Norsemen
34-32.
The Norsemen (8-8, 0-1) took three shots in the closing 15 seconds
in an effort to force overtime, but despite crashing the boards
for second chances, none of their follow attempts would fall.
"You kind of stop breathing out there, especially when you
need to breathe," noted Bohannon, who paced the Monarchs
(12-5, 1-0) with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals. "That's
when you get that burning feeling."
After building the largest lead of the game at 30-24 with 4:52
to play, the burn started for Monte Vista, failing to make six
of its last seven foul shots.
Valhalla post players CHELSEA KITCHENS and LAUREN SHEPPARD took
advantage, putting in a series of three rebound-baskets to cut
the lead to 34-30. Then Kitchens added two free throws to cut
the margin to a bucket with 1:37 remaining. But neither team would
score again.
"Our defense was better tonight," added Bohannon, a
senior shooting guard. "Our offense is not what it usually
is, but coach says if you play defense, you can still win."
Kitchens led all scorers with 18 points and 8 rebounds, while
Sheppard scored eight of her 10 points in the final period. She
also garnered 9 rebounds, one fewer than game leader TASHANA HOWELL
of Monte Vista. Howell also rang up 11 points.
"We were 9 for 39 from within 8 feet of the basket, and we
lose by two," lamented Valhalla coach ROBERT WILSON. "Missed
shots. That was the story of whole game for us."
Monte Vista assistant coach CHRISTY GREENE noted the Monarchs'
narrow escape.
"Valhalla was right there, missing a 12-footer in the key
at the buzzer," she said.
SANTANA 73, GROSSMONT 28 - During the various summer
league sessions there was some discussion that this match-up would
be a key ingredient to the Grossmont North League throne. Much
has happened since that thinking was launched, foremost the loss
of Grossmont "do-it-all" guard JACLYN GOLDBARG to a
season-ending knee injury.
Round one between these league rivals was no contest. Santana
led 46-11 at intermission of the Grossmont North League opener
Friday (Jan.16).
"We got great contributions from everybody," said Santana
coach WADE VICKERY, who celebrated his 626th victory.
Ten Sultans marched in Santana's scoring parade led by JORDAN
FRANEY (20 points, 6 rebounds). SHAE BASS added 15 points, while
AMIE LEACH added 10 points and 6 rebounds. COURTNEY ASH chipped
in with 10 points and 7 steals, while MARGUEAUX BASS delivered
6 assists.
MICHELLE GONZALEZ led Grossmont (8-10, 0-1) with 10 points and
6 rebounds. LAURA FELICE added 9 (all on threes) and team-high
8 rebounds.
EL CAPITAN 77, EL CAJON VALLEY 24 - Sophomore ALLISON
DUFFY buried the host Braves with 15 field goals for a game-high
30 points to go along with 23 rebounds and 4 steals as El Capitan
(13-2, 1-0) steamrollered host El Cajon Valley in Friday's (Jan.
16) Grossmont North League opener for both teams.
Given that El Capitan led 67-21 after three quarters, Duffy did
not participate in the final quarter.
HEATHER MOLZEN added 16 points and 16 rebounds for the Vaqueros
while MALLORIE MONTGOMERY chimed in with 8 points, 6 steals and
4 assists. LISA WILKINS did a solid job of distributing the ball
(3 assists), while scoring a season-high 9 points and logging
4 steals and 4 rebounds.
El Capitan stormed to a 21-0 first-quarter lead and never looked
back.
RAWAA PATROS paced the Braves (3-13, 0-1) with 7 points, as El
Cajon Valley lost its 9th straight.
MOUNT MIGUEL 70, HELIX 37 - KAYALA "Baby Shaq"
HENRY pumped in 20 points and grabbed 7 rebounds Friday night
(Jan. 16) as the Matadors extended their Grossmont South League
winning streak to 27 games.
MONIQUE CLAYTON connected on 10 of 16 free throws en route to
a 15-point effort that included 7 rebounds and 3 steals, while
smooth point guard GENEVIEVE COSTELLO tossed in 19 points, dealt
7 assists, pilfered 5 passes and retrieved 4 rebounds.
Clayton, a 5-foot-7 sophomore, scored 8 points in the 2nd quarter
as Mount Miguel (12-4, 1-0) claimed a 34-18 halftime advantage.
After that, it was all downhill for Helix (12-7, 0-1).
JERICA WILLIAMS scored only 6 points for the Matadors, but came
down with a team-leading 10 rebounds, 8 assists, 3 steals and
3 blocks.
DIANA LEASAU led Helix with 17 points, 4 rebounds and a pair of
assists.
CHRISTIAN 55, CRAWFORD 24 - RACHEL EDELEN rang up
a season-high 24 points as the visiting Patriots (7-9, 1-0) clipped
Crawford in Friday night's (Jan. 16) Harbor League opener for
both teams.
On top of her personal-record scoring feast, Edelen hauled in
10 rebounds.
JAMIE RAY drilled in a pair of 3-pointers on her way to an 8-point
offering, while HOLLY ERICKSON grabbed 13 rebounds and tossed
in 6 points for the Patriots.
GRANITE HILLS 73, STEELE CANYON 20 - A stingy Granite
Hills defense rationed the Cougars to 6 points or less in every
quarter of Friday's (Jan. 16) Grossmont South League opener in
the Eagles lair.
Five Eagles reached double scoring digits led by MARNESHA HALL's
13 points. MORGAN SABALA and JOY EDWARDS added 12 points apiece,
while JENNIFER WHITMOYER and MEAGAN ST. JOHN netted 11 markers
each.
CELESTE MARTINS topped Steele Canyon with 6 points. CASSIE GLOVER
collected a game-best 15 rebounds for the Cougars (3-15, 0-1).
TIFFANIE CROSS corralled 10 rebounds for Steele Canyon.

Henry spots Christian nine points to start,
overcomes deficit to win by nine
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - Christian High jumped out to a 9-0 lead over Patrick
Henry Wednesday (Jan.14), but couldn't maintain its early momentum
as the Eastern League visitors rallied for a 49-40 win at the
Ryan Athletic Center.
"Sure, I'm disappointed that we didn't get a win, but I thought
our girls played hard against a physically bigger team,"
Christian coach TIM JOLLETT said.
Jollett heaped accolades upon 5-foot-8 Christian sophomore HOLLY
ERICKSON, who held her own against Henry 5-foot-11 senior center
Christina Tillman on the boards. Tillman won the scoring battle
13-7, but Erickson got the rebounding edge with 11 caroms.
"Holly was so tenacious out there," Jollett said. "Tillman
is a much bigger girl, but Holly refused to be pushed out of there."
RACHEL EDELEN, who recently accepted a basketball scholarship
to Christian Heritage College, led Jollett's Patriots with 11
points against Henry.
Henry snapped a 26-26 tie with a 15-4 run in the 3rd quarter.

El Capitan front line pounds Mount Miguel
at East County Showcase
EastCountySports.com
SPRING VALLEY - In this case, height beat speed - a fact that
most coaches find hard to believe. El Capitan's giant front line
of 6-foot-2 HEATHER MOLZEN and 6-1 ALLISON DUFFY combined for
46 points and 34 rebounds as the Vaqueros crushed host Mount Miguel
60-43 in Saturday's (Jan. 10) East County Showcase.
Considering the Matadors beat the Vaqueros in the 2003 San Diego
CIF Division II championship in double overtime and again last
month, El Capitan obviously made some critical changes this time
around.
"We didn't get frustrated," Duffy said after the Vaqueros
(12-2) who overcame an 8-0 deficit and used a 15-point run to
take command in Saturday's meeting at Mount Miguel. "We just
ran our stuff."
More than that, though, is El Capitan fractured Mount Miguel's
usually potent press.
"Not many teams play tougher defense than Mount Miguel,"
El Capitan coach DARIN CURTIS said. "We can't simulate what
they do in our practices because we don't have their kind of speed.
But this was the second time we've seen Mount Miguel's press and
the more you see it the less affected by it you become."
Guards MALLORIE MONTGOMERY, ALISSA UNDEN and MORGAN CRAIG marched
through the Matadors' pressure as if they had a permit.
"The difference between this game and the last game is our
guards attacked their guards and attacked the basket," said
Duffy, who rang up 22 points (on 10-for-20 shooting) while corralling
20 rebounds.
As for the spark that halted Mount Miguel's early splurge that
gave the Matadors an 8-0 advantage, Duffy shrugged her shoulders
and said, "I guess we just ran it down their throats. We
crashed the boards."
The key, though, was El Capitan's ability to break Mount Miguel's
vaunted press.
"The first time we played them they had us on our heels,"
Duffy said of the Vaqueros 53-45 loss on Dec. 30. "They were
ready to go, and we weren't on top of our game."
Perhaps, it was intimidation in that first meeting. But it the
rematch, the Vaqueros played with confidence.
"We knew they would come out hard, because they always do,"
said Molzen, who netted
11 of 23 shots under intense pressure from Mount Miguel's defense.
"We knew though, that if we didn't give up that eventually
they would."
GENEVIEVE COSTELLO, despite missing much of the critical 1st half
due to foul trouble, led the Matadors (11-4) with 15 points and
8 rebounds. KAYLA HENRY contributed just 7 points, but came down
with a team-high 11 rebounds.
SANTANA 57, GRANITE HILLS 50 - When the stakes are
high, never count out coach WADE VICKERY's Sultans. Sure, this
game was only for pride in that neither team is in the same league
or San Diego CIF division. None the less, losing is not acceptable.
Same can be said for the upstart Granite Hills Eagles, who yearn
to be recognized as a power of some sort.
"This was an intense game like I thought it would be,"
Vickery said. "Granite Hills maybe plays harder than any
team in the county. I told my girls that in pre-game. Although
I don't like to admit it, Granite Hills is one team that might
play harder than us. So we had to step up our effort. They are
a very physical, but clean playing team. You have to earn what
you get against them."
Santana (13-3) looked as if it was going to run away and hide
in the early going, streaking to a 13-2 advantage with 4:47 left
in the opening quarter. Blowout in the making, but not forthcoming,
as the Eagles used their talons to eventually fight back and take
a 21-20 lead on a 3-ball by MORGAN SABALA.
It was a short-lived edge for the upset-minded Eagles (9-5), who
never led again after Santana's MARGUEAUX BASS dropped in a pair
of free throws with 5:17 remaining in the 1st half.
JORDAN FRANEY cashed in 9 of her 19 points in the 2nd quarter
as Santana sailed into a 38-27 halftime lead.
One of the unsung heroes in Santana's latest conquest was 6-foot-2
senior center AMIE LEACH, who enjoyed her finest game of the season
coming off the bench. Leach reveled in the physical battles inside
the paint, pulling down a dozen rebounds while rejecting 4 Granite
Hills shots.
"It was my kind of game, I thought," Leach said.
"I really like the more physical games because I seem to
play better. Offensively, I know I haven't been doing that well,
and that's what I'm working on. But defensively I've been coming
along."
Leach admitted that she would rather pick on girls her own size
than tangle with the smaller, swifter foes such as Granite Hills
or Mount Miguel.
COURTNEY ASH harassed the Eagles all night, collecting 8 points
and 4 steals, while SHAE BASS netted 8 points and her sister MARGEAUX
dished off 7 assists.
Santana maintained control of the lead after its initial slumber,
which got a bit precarious when Sabala sank her second 3-ball
and closing the Sultans advantage to 45-42 with 2:44 remaining.
That's as close as the Eagles would get.
"My girls played hard, but foul trouble across the board
really hurt us," Granite Hills coach JAY ROWLETT said, noting
his Eagles had two players disqualified as his club was whistled
for 25 fouls (to Santana's 17).
Sabala paced Granite Hills with 14 points, while JENNIFER WHITMOYER
netted 12 points - all on 3-pointers. JOY EDWARDS added 10 points,
6 rebounds, 2 assists and a pair of steals.

Sultans give Highlanders painful lesson
with 22-0 opening run
EastCountySports.com
LA MESA - A quick glance at the standings showed the high-flying
Helix Highlanders with more victories than any team in East County.
Following seven consecutive triumphs, albeit against Tier Two
competition, the Highlanders were ready to archive their success
on quizzes, and focus on a midterm exam against a Tier One opponent
Friday night (Jan. 9).
Teaching an-all-too-painful lesson, the 8th-ranked Sultans showed
the hosting Highlanders they still need a little more polish before
running with the perennial powers. Santana proved its case in
rapid fashion, scoring the first 22 points of the night - including
a 19-0 shutout in the 1st quarter - and then continuing on for
an easy 66-27 romp at Caledonia Gymnasium.
"They just dominated us," Helix assistant coach WILLIE
HATHAWAY sighed. "It was embarrassing. They are so aggressive
and they just keep coming after you. They're like a machine -
they never stop. I think our kids were shocked."
So, in some ways, were the Sultans.
"We were told Helix (12-6) would come out pumped-up and would
play hard," noted Santana forward ROBIN APPLEBY. "So
we tried to take out Helix's No. 24 (DIANA LEASAU) and keep her
from making any perimeter shots."
Mission accomplished. Diana Leasau was limited to just 3 points
- all at the foul line - as the Sultans' permitted the Helix scoring
leader a mere 2 shots from the field. The fact that she was in
early foul trouble only added to her frustration.
"We pretty much shut her out," added Appleby, who scored
12 of her 16 points in the first half to lift the Sultans (12-3)
to a stunning 36-6 halftime advantage.
Santana coach WADE VICKERY credited senior COURTNEY ASH for putting
the clamps on Leasau.
"Courtney just did a great job on her defensively,"
Vickery emphasized, noting that the Helix sophomore came into
the game averaging more than 15.6 points per outing.
Ash made 7 steals and 7 deflections in addition to dealing 4 assists.
JORDAN FRANEY turned in another strong game for the Sultans, shoveling
in 18 points, grabbing 12 rebounds, notching 5 steals and passing
out a season-high 4 assists. Appleby added 8 rebounds to her totals,
while MARGEAUX BASS posted a game high 7 assists.
The game proved to be just another Santana tune-up before its
Grossmont North League showdown with El Capitan.
"Oh, yeah, we're looking forward to Jan. 23rd," added
Appleby, who recited the date from memory. "But we do have
to play Granite Hills (Saturday, Jan. 10 at Mount Miguel at 4:30
p.m.) first, and they've been playing well lately, too."
CHASITY TOILOLO and RACQUEL PRIMAS led the Highlanders (12-6)
with 8 points apiece. Toilolo came down with just 4 rebounds -
6 below her season average.
VALHALLA 52, EL CAJON VALLEY 40 - Valhalla coach
ROBERT WILSON has a sense of humor, even when it comes to evaluating
basketball statistics.
"Credit our poor shooting for our strong rebounding,"
he said after the Norsemen (8-7) snapped a four-game losing streak
at the expense of the Braves (3-12) on Friday night (Jan. 9).
Valhalla connected on just 36 percent of 56 shots from the floor,
but generated numerous second chances with 20 of its 58 rebounds
coming off the offensive glass.
LAUREN SHEPPARD had the hot hand early, scoring 10 of her 17 points
in the 1st quarter - three of which were assisted by NINA SCHMIDT
- as Valhalla claimed a 14-7 lead.
Sheppard also hauled down 13 rebounds - two less than teammate
and game leader DANIELLE ST. JOHN, who also chipped in 7 points.
CHELSEA KITCHENS muscled in 8 points and collected 12 rebounds.
ANGEL BURCH was a triple-threat, rolling a combination of 7 points,
6 rebounds and 4 assists. ADRIANNA MALONE added 9 points, while
HANNAH GERKEN gathered 6 rebounds and tapped in 4 points.
More than half of El Cajon Valley's scoring came from long distance
as the Braves banged in 8 treys - 4 by MICHELLE THOMPSON, and
2 each by TYNISHA SMITH and RAWAA PATROS.
WEST HILLS 56, MONTE VISTA 45 - Freshman MUAAU NADERHOFF
rolled a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds Friday night
(Jan. 9) as the visiting Wolf Pack (11-6) won its fifth straight
and 6th in 7 starts.
CAITLIN WEISS and CARAMIE HUNTINGTON landed 11 points apiece as
the Pack snapped Monte Vista's four-game winning streak.
"Caitlin Weiss makes a big difference for us," said
West Hills coach CARLOS MOSS, who, along with his Wolf Pack assistant
SIG CHABROWSKI, coached the Monarchs three seasons back. "She
allows us to spread the scoring around." Weiss logged
3 assists as did Huntington and DANIELLE EDMONDSON.
"Weiss sure makes them a better team," agreed Monte
Vista assistant coach CHRISTY GREENE. "But we did not play
well at all."
The Monarchs, who had won 7 of their previous 8, fell behind 30-22
by intermission. They never posed a serious challenge in the final
half, which is a credit to West Hills.
"We needed this win," said Moss, whose Wolf Pack rates
no better than a darkhorse in the Grossmont North League race
that tips off on Tuesday (Jan. 20) against Santana.
TASHANA HOWELL paced the Monarchs (11-5) with 17 points and 6
rebounds. SHALIA BOHANNON added 12 points, 3 assists, 3 steals
and 3 blocks.
CHRISTIAN 53, CALVIN CHRISTIAN 13 - Senior RACHEL
EDELEN equaled her season high of 23 points - despite converting
only one of 7 free throws - as the Patriots pulverized the visiting
Crusaders in a non-league contest Friday night (Jan. 9).
Sophomore BRITNI McCASKILL led the Patriots' supporting cast with
a career-high 12 points.
JAMIE RAY ran her 3-point season total to 20 with a pair of treys
for Christian (6-8), which led 35-6 at intermission. The victory
was just the second in six games for the Patriots, who have been
playing short-handed as various starters have been on vacation.

Helix's Diana Leasau, shown here in an earlier game, scored a career high 37 points to lead the Highlanders over El Cajon Valley Monday night (1-5-04). The spunky sophomore also hit 10-10 free throws, grabbed 11 rebounds, dished 6 assists and logged 6 steals. (Photo by Adolfo Villanueva)
