Matadors get top seed in Division II
amidst confusion in bracket below
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - East County is arguably the hotbed for San Diego County
high school girls basketball at the moment. Ten of the Inland's
12 quintets have qualified for post-season play granted by the
almighty computer (power) ratings. The five-division playoffs
tipoff on Wednesday (Feb. 25).
The bulk of East County's strength comes in the 15-team San Diego
CIF Division II bracket where Grossmont South League kingpin Mount
Miguel (22-6) is seeded No.1 and Grossmont North co-champion El
Capitan (23-3) is seeded No. 3.
The ludicrous power ratings system calculated that Ramona (19-8)
- champion of the hapless Valley League - was somehow superior
to El Capitan, thus forcing the Vaqueros into possibly playing
their semifinal encounter in the Bulldogs' house on March 3. That,
of course, is based on all favorites following the seeding ladder.
Not surprisingly, El Capitan coach DARIN CURTIS, who believed
his squad had a bona fide shot at the No.1 seed, was unhappy when
he learned that the power ratings scale believed his team was
only third-best in the 15-team, Division II bracket.
A key ingredient in the formula that led to El Capitan slipping
to No. 3 on the Division II seeding ladder was the fact that one
Grossmont North League coach - who, though apparently had
no interest in post-season play for his 3-22 team, failed to fill
out the required power ratings form. The impact was that games
involving El Cajon Valley were not computed into the playoff formula.
This coach's decision not to turn in the mandatory paperwork hurt
all four of the other Grossmont North league teams, all of which
earned playoff berths. El Cajon Valley was one of three county
teams that did not turn in the "proper papers" commanded
by San Diego CIF Commissioner DENNIS ACKERMAN.
In Wednesday's (Feb. 25) first round Division II games, El Capitan
(23-3) hosts El Centro Southwest (9-17), Valhalla (11-16) travels
to No. 4 Orange Glen (19-8), Monte Vista (16-11) ventures to Serra
(14-12), West Hills (17-10) treks to Patrick Henry (9-12) and
Grossmont (11-17) visits No. 2 Ramona (19-8).
Top-seeded Mount Miguel (22-6), a four-time undefeated Grossmont
South League champion, draws a first round bye and awaits the
chance to host the University City (13-14)-Oceanside (9-18) winner
in Saturday's (Feb. 28) quarterfinals at 7 p.m.
In Wednesday's Division I openers, Helix (18-10) travels to Eastlake
(21-5) and Granite Hills (18-10) hosts Torrey Pines (17-11). Both
games tipoff at 7 p.m.
Perennial power Santana (23-4) - the No. 2 seed - draws a first
round bye on Wednesday and faces the winner of Central Union (8-18)-at-Valley
Center (13-14) in Saturday's (Feb. 28) Division III semifinals.
Rounding out the East County field are coach TIM JOLLETT's Christian
High Patriots (16-11), who somehow - through the power ratings
command - are obligated to face No. 2 seed Bishop's (16-8) in
Saturday's (Feb. 28) Division IV quarterfinals at 7 p.m.

Matadors win streak longest in county after
completing another perfect league season
EastCountySports.com
SPRING VALLEY - The Mount Miguel Matadors reeled off their 36th
consecutive Grossmont South League victory in Friday night's (Feb.20)
regular season finale by smashing Steele Canyon 93-23. No team
in the county has a longer league win streak than these Matadors
(22-6, 10-0).
Senior KAYLA HENRY, the odds-on favorite to be the Grossmont South
League Player of the Year, scored a career-high 30 points, while
collecting 10 rebounds and 8 steals for the Matadors.
JERICA WILLIAMS added 12 points and 6 rebounds, while GENEVIEVE
COSTELLO chipped 10 points, 10 assists, 5 steals and 5 rebounds.
The Matadors are allowing a county low 36.5 points per game.
WEST HILLS 56, GROSSMONT 49 - A classic evening of
high school basketball unfolded in the Wolf Pack's den at West
Hills Friday night (Feb. 20) as the Wolf Pack held court against
a gallant Grossmont Foothillers challenge, and emerged victorious
in final regular season action.
West Hills (17-10, 4-4), ranked fourth in the latest Division
II polls, looked every bit deserving of that status as the Pack
jumped to a 13- 4 first quarter lead behind their tenacious trapping
defense.
AIME CORDEIRO and CARAMIE HUNTINGTON each scored a pair of baskets
in the quarter, while the Hillers only answer was a lonely 3 pointer
by senior LAURA FELICE.
The second quarter saw Grossmont find its stride behind the offensive
explosion of sophomore SAM MOHAN, who scored 11 of her game and
season high 26 points in the quarter, and the Hillers drew to
within 7 as the half ended.
West Hills again took control in the 3rd as DANIELLE EDMONDSON
scored 8 points, including a long three ball, and the Wolf
Pack extended the lead to 13 as the 3rd quarter ended.
Once again momentum would take a wide U-turn as the fourth unfolded.
The Hillers turned up the defensive pressure, turning steals into
Mohan hoops and the Hillers pulled to within six with 1:54 to
play.
"West Hills showed a lot of poise at the foul line tonight,"
said Grossmont coach WALLEY YEAKLE. "They made them, and
we didn't."
The Wolf Pack converted on 10 of 11 - all in the fourth quarter.
AIME CORDEIRO made all 8 of her attempts while the Hillers shot
11 of 24 from the charity stripe on the night.
West Hills finished third in league play with a 4-4 record, while
the Hillers came in fourth at 2-6.
Mohan made 11 of 19 shots for Grossmont, which should earn a SDCIF
Division II playoff berth despite losing three players and 45
points per game to injuries and other unnamed reasons. Mohan
also collected a dozen rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals, while
1,000-point scorer Felice added 10 points.
Cordiero (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Edmondson (10 points, 10
rebounds) recorded double-doubles for West Hills.
GRANITE HILLS 42, VALHALLA 21 - JENNIFER WHITMOYER
was the only player to reach double scoring digits on her way
to a 10-point night Friday (Feb. 20) to help Granite Hills secure
a second place finish in the Grossmont South League.
Whitmoyer, the East County 3-point shooting queen, hit a pair
of long rangers to lift her season total to 72 bull's-eyes.
"We caused a lot of turnovers with our press," Granite
Hills coach JAY ROWLETT said.
Valhalla coach ROBERT WILSON, who has seen his team disjointed
for a variety of reasons, suggested that "Granite Hills must
have sneaked into the gym and put a lid on our first half basket.
We missed the front end of three straight 1 and 1's, and could
only finish on 2 for 11 shooting inside the paint in the first
half," he noted.
On the bright side, Wilson noted, "We finally handled the
full court pressure of Granite Hills after 3 years of struggle
and we can't finish in the half court."
ADRIANA MALONE led the Norsemen with 7 points and 3 steals.
HELIX 52, MONTE VISTA 42 - CHASITY TOILOLO scored
14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead host Helix past Monte
Vista in Friday's (Feb. 20) Grossmont South League finale.
DIANA LEASAU added 14 points and SHARIKA THOMPSON tossed in 10,
while MELE LEASAU collected 10 rebounds for the Highlanders.
TASHANA HOWELL scored a game-high 20 points and snagged 8 rebounds
to pace Monte Vista.
SANTANA 75, EL CAJON VALLEY 24 - Twelve Sultans reached
the scoring column as Santana smeared El Cajon Valley in Friday's
(Feb.20) Grossmont North League finale.
ROBIN APPLEBY and JORDAN FRANEY scored 12 points apiece to lead
Santana (23-4,7-1), which won its eighth straight and 15th in
its last 16 starts.
CHRISTIAN 59, MADISON 37 - HOLLY ERICKSON (20 points)
and HEATHER MEIER (18 points) led Christian to a season-ending
Harbor League victory over Madison at the Ryan Athletic Center
Friday night (Feb.20).
"Our two seniors - RACHEL EDELEN and JAMIE RAY - fouled out
in the 3rd quarter," said Christian coach TIM JOLLETT. "Be
we still won going away."
Edelen finished with 10 points.

Patriots crush Clairemont on offensive boards
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - Four Patriots reached double figures Wednesday (Feb.
18) as Christian High crushed visiting Clairemont 60-40 in a Harbor
League encounter. Steady senior RACHEL EDELEN led the Patriots
(15-11, 7-2) with 17 points, including 9 for 10 free throw shooting.
Not to be outdone, Christian forward HOLLY ERICKSON punched in
12 points and hauled down a remarkable 19 rebounds. Freshman KATIE
GERLEK enjoyed a career day with 12 points and 15 boards.
"We just killed (Clairemont) on the offensive glass,"
Christian coach TIM JOLLETT said. "We didn't have a
great shooting percentage, but I'll bet we beat them on the boards
(approximately) 50-20. We were that dominant."
HEATHER MEIER also pitched in 12 points for the Patriots.

Vaqueros take out frustration on Wolf Pack
to right wagon
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - The playoff-bound El Capitan Vaqueros, temporarily
derailed by Santana a week ago, wasted little time re-establishing
themselves as bona fide contenders for the San Diego CIF Division
II crown Tuesday night (Feb. 17). The Vaqueros made their statement
loud and clear as they erupted for 28 points in the opening quarter
and continued on for a 63-44 Grossmont North League victory over
host West Hills.
HEATHER MOLZEN clicked on 9 of 15 floor shots, finishing with
game-high 19 points while collecting 15 rebounds. The 6-foot-3
junior also blocked 4 shots and made 3 steals.
Sophomore ALLISON DUFFY added 17 points, 12 rebounds, 4 blocks
and 4 steals to the El Capitan totals.
Most impressive of El Capitan's offensive onslaught was the 5-for-5
shooting of sophomore MORGAN CRAIG who matched the 10-point output
of senior ALISSA UNDEN.
AIME CORDEIRO cranked in 13 points to lead West Hills (16-10,
3-4).
GRANITE HILLS 52, MONTE VISTA 38 - Senior Night paid
grand dividends for Granite Hills as the Eagles secured second
place in Tuesday night's (Feb. 17) Grossmont South League challenge
offered by visiting Monte Vista.
Freshman MARNESA HALL scored 17 points and grabbed 8 points to
captain the Eagles' latest flight over the Monarchs.
Granite Hills (17-10, 7-2) led 33-15 at intermission and held
a 20-point advantage with 2:30 remaining.
Not known for their free throw shooting, the Eagles landed 14
of 21 charity tosses. JOY EDWARDS was 5-for-5 to lead the way.
TASHANA HOWELL turned in a solid night for Monte Vista (16-10,
4-5), ringing up 12 points and 14 rebounds.
MOUNT MIGUEL 70, VALHALLA 20 - Four-time Grossmont
South champion Mount Miguel stretched its league winning streak
to 35 victories in a row Tuesday night (Feb. 17) with an easy
knockout of host Valhalla.
The Matadors' winning streak is believed to be the longest active
skein in the San Diego CIF section at the moment.
KAYLA HENRY hammered in 20 points and 15 points to pace the Matadors
(21-6, 9-0), who figure to be one of the top two seeds in the
SDCIF Division II playoffs.
GENEVIEVE COSTELLO led the Mount Miguel supporting cast with 15
points and 7 assists.
Matadors reserve KAYLA HUDDLESTON rang up a season-high 11 points
for Mount Miguel.
KRISTEN MITROVICH's 6 points and 3 blocks led the Norsemen (11-15,
2-7), who were playing without team leader CHELSEA KITCHENS, presently
in England with the Valhalla choir.
GROSSMONT 60, EL CAJON VALLEY 49 - Despite missing
10 of 19 free throw attempts, the Foothillers' SAM MOHAN equaled
her season high of 23 points to hoist Grossmont to a Grossmont
North League victory over visiting El Cajon Valley on Tuesday
night (Feb. 17).
Where the 5-foot-8 Mohan was most effective was in her floor shooting
where she connected on 7 of 11 attempts.
Grossmont senior guard LAURA FELICE added 19 points, including
four 3-pointers to raise her season total above the arc to 67
- three behind East County leader Jennifer Whitmoyer of Granite
Hills.
Felice was 5-for-5 from the free throw line and also pilfered
4 El Cajon Valley passes as the Foothillers (11-16, 2-5) overcame
a 6-3 first quarter deficit to claim the victory.
Sophomore CHRISTINE SULLIVAN collected 10 rebounds for Grossmont,
one more than teammate KINDRA MYERS.
El Cajon Valley's RAWAA PATROS netted 20 points - one shy of her
personal high game. MICHELLE THOMPSON sank a trio of 3-pointers
and finished with 11 points.
HELIX 70, STEELE CANYON 34 - DIANA LEASAU and ASHLEY
PENN popped in 18 points apiece to carry the visiting Highlanders
(17-10, 5-4) to the lopsided Grossmont South League victory.
Leasau landed 8 of 15 shots from the field, Penn sank 7 of 11
(including a pair of treys) for the 3rd place Highlanders.
RACQUEL PRIMAS added 9 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals
to the Helix count, while MELE LEASAU hauled down a team-best
9 rebounds and made 3 steals.
SHARIKA THOMPSON made the Helix faithful scream and the Cougars
crowd howl when she tossed in 6 points, secured 7 rebounds and
blocked a game-high 4 shots.
The Highlanders put the game away in the 3rd quarter when they
cornered the Cougars with a 23-5 scoring edge.
CASSIE GLOVER led Steele Canyon with 9 points, one more than teammate
TIFFANIE CROSS.

Patriots give impressive performance after
top players sidelined with flu
East County Sports.com
SOLANA BEACH - Minus their leading scorer and tallest player,
coach TIM JOLLETT and his Christian High Patriots still managed
to find a way to defeat perennial power Santa Fe Christian for
the second time in as many meetings Friday night (Feb.13).
JAMIE RAY nailed five 3-pointers for 15 points to carry Christian
to the 43-35 non-league victory.
"I'm sure (SFC coach) Paul Clark thought he had it made when
he realized we didn't have (leading scorer) RACHEL EDELEN and
(6-foot-1 freshman) KATIE GERLEK," Jollett said. "From
a coaching standpoint, it's nice to know that you have kids willing
to pick up the slack."
Both Edelen and Gerlek were sidelined by the flu.
HEATHER MEIER added 10 points and SARAH SEYMOUR tossed in 9 points
for the second-place Patriots.

Sultans come up with best game at right
time for upset of El Capitan
East County Sports.com
SANTEE - When it comes to showdowns, never bet against a WADE
VICKERY-coached team. Against all odds, Vickery always seems to
find a way to come out on top. Perhaps that is why the 24-year
coaching veteran owns 562 victories and 19 Grossmont League championships.
Thus, not surprisingly, Vickery and his underdog Sultans pulled
off one of the most predictable yet surprising upsets of the season
when they upended visiting El Capitan 60-53 on Thursday night
(Feb.12).
"We got the loose balls and the deflections," Vickery
said. "I felt we were the aggressors for the most part."
Just the fact that defensive-minded El Capitan gave up 60 points
had to concern Vaqueros coach DARIN CURTIS, whose club was allowing
only 38 points per start coming in. It was El Capitan's first
loss in 13 games, while Santana stretched its immediate winning
streak to seven games.
"We didn't play with any heart tonight," Curtis said.
"This was only the second time all year that we didn't have
any push in us. Santana is a good team and they made us play the
way that they wanted."
Santana senior guards MARGEAUX BASS and COURTNEY ASH harassed
the No.3-ranked Vaqueros (22-3, 6-1) throughout the evening. Twenty-eight
El Capitan turnovers are proof that the Vaqueros were crumbling
under pressure.
"This is the best feeling ever," said Bass, who nailed
7 of 10 shots from the floor and 2 of 3 free throws, while logging
5 steals and 6 assists. "We were the underdogs and we came
back."
Santana (22-4,6-1) is destined to share the Grossmont North League
flag with El Capitan.
"This is the best game we've ever played, considering what
was on the line," offered Ash, who contributed 15 points
- a trio of threes - and 4 steals. "We kept the pressure
on, never let them have their shots."
For Bass and Ash, this was the 4th league championship in as many
years.
"This one was the best because we had to work the hardest
to get it," said Bass, who finished with a team-best 16 points.
East County scoring leader ALLISON DUFFY of El Capitan was
slapped with three fouls in the first five minutes of this key
Grossmont North League classic. She sat out the majority of the
second quarter.
"Obviously that was a big factor," Vickery said of Duffy's
foul woes. "For her to have to sit some (9 minutes in the
first half, 4 minutes in the second half) is definitely an advantage
for us. She is very hard to stop."
The 6-foot-1 foul-plagued Duffy (24 points, 14 rebounds, 3 steals)
and 6-foot-3 HEATHER MOLZEN (12 points, 19 rebounds, 8 blocks,
2 assists) dominated inside for El Capitan.
"Duffy and Molzen together - I don't remember any tandem
like that in the history of our (Grossmont North) League,"
Vickery said. "Their size and power is like we've never seen
in our league. I really like those both of those kids and what
they bring to our game.
"At the same time, I'm really happy that we are celebrating
tonight."
GRANITE HILLS 54, HELIX 47 - In a struggle for second
place in the Grossmont South League, host Granite Hills bounced
back from a 3-point halftime deficit to turn back the spunky Helix
Highlanders in Thursday's (Feb. 12) Grossmont South League face-off
in El Cajon.
The Eagles (16-10, 6-2) built a 50-30 lead with five minutes left
in the game and then held on for the key victory.
"This game should help us get ready for playoffs," Granite
Hills coach JAY ROWLETT said "We have two tough games next
week (Monte Vista and Valhalla), and tonight's game will help
us be ready for those games."
"It (halves) was like two different games," said Eagles
coach JAY ROWLETT. "We came out and played a dominant 3rd
quarter. Our defensive pressure was too much for them.
"We sat on the lead, backed off the press and relaxed the
rest of the game."
Granite Hills' 3rd period surge was spearheaded by MEAGAN ST.
JOHN, who tallied 9 of her 12 points during that 8-minute stretch.
Freshman MORGAN SABALA was 10-for-10 from the free throw line
as she finished with a game-high 17 points for Granite Hills.
MARNESHA HALL chipped in 13 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists for
the Eagles.
"We were up 4 at halftime, but came out flat in the 3rd quarter,"
acknowledged Helix coach WILLIE HATHAWAY.
Part of Helix's struggles could be attributed to the loss of sophomore
DIANA LEASAU, who sat out the 3rd quarter with 3 fouls. Despite
her abbreviated playing time, Leasau managed to produce 11 points,
5 rebounds and 3 assist.
CHASITY TOILOLO added 11 points, 13 rebounds and 7 blocks in a
powerful performance for Helix.
MOUNT MIGUEL 63, MONTE VISTA 38 - Winning basketball
games is like clockwork for coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL and his Mount
Miguel Matadors, who clinched their 4th straight Grossmont South
League title by skipping past the visiting Monarchs Thursday night
(Feb. 12).
KAYLA HENRY hammered down 23 points and cleared 16 rebounds to
guide the 7th-ranked Matadors (20-6, 8-0) to their 34th consecutive
league victory.
"Henry set the tone inside," Sandoval said. "If
she could make a free throw, she would probably average another
4 points per game."
Her sting was plenty potent, as far as Monte Vista was concerned.
"Henry killed us - maybe we should have fouled her more,"
Monte Vista assistant coach CHRISTY GREENE countered. That might
have been sound strategy, considering Henry made only 3 of 12
free throws.
GENEVIEVE COSTELLO scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half
as the Matadors turned the game into a Mount Miguel stampede.
TASHANA HOWELL led Monte Vista (16-9, 4-4) with 16 points, 9 rebounds
and 2 steals.
"We were terrible in the first half - we couldn't shoot and
played no defense," Greene said.
WEST HILLS 83, EL CAJON VALLEY 36 - The Wolf Pack
recorded a season high score in burying the Braves in Thursday's
(Feb.12) Grossmont North League game.
"We came out and played with pressure -- we wanted to get
some turnovers, and we did," said West Hills coach CARLOS
MOSS. "We trapped and played some 1-3-1 zone. This game helps
us take advantage of our opponent's mistakes.
"We are becoming able to push the ball when we want to. A
game like tonight really helps us get ready for the playoffs."
Sophomore guard CARAMIE HUNTINGTON nearly doubled her previous
season high with 25 points as the Wolf Pack (16-9, 3-3) steamrollered
the Braves (3-20, 0-6). On top of that she dished 10 assists,
while making 3 steals.
"We work hard in practice and that has carried over to the
games recently," Huntington said. "It took us awhile
to get used to coach Moss. Things were a little difficult at first,
but we are comfortable with what he wants and that makes things
easier for us."
Freshman MUAAU NADERHOFF added 16 points and 5 rebounds for the
Wolf Pack, which benefited from a school-record 11 steals by AIME
CORDEIRO.
RAWAA PATROS topped El Cajon Valley (3-20, 0-6) with 15 points.
VALHALLA 47, STEELE CANYON 33 - A 16-3 fourth quarter
rush by the visiting Norsemen turned a one-point edge into a bona
fide victory in Thursday's (Feb.12) Grossmont South League action.
Valhalla's CHELSEA KITCHENS served up 18 points, 17 rebounds and
4 steals.
"It seemed as if she was always around the ball tonight,"
Valhalla coach ROBERT WILSON said.
With a 10-point lead at the half, the Norsemen seemed to be in
control. Then, in the 3rd quarter, Steele Canyon rebounded with
a 15-6 scoring edge to make a game of it heading into the final
period.
"We did not rebound the ball at all in the 4th quarter,"
Wilson said. "Steele Canyon was getting shot attempt after
shot attempt. This cut the lead to one by the end of the quarter."
After turning up the defensive pressure and by finally rebounding
the basketball (13 rebounds in the fourth quarter, Kitchens clutching
8 of them), Valhalla jumped back out in front and finished strong.
"We struggled in the first half, then played well in the
3rd quarter," said Steele Canyon coach FRANK QUINONES. "I
thought we rebounded well and hit the boards hard."
But the Cougars had no answer for Valhalla's Kitchens.
"Kitchens was awesome against us," Quinones recalled.
"She's only a sophomore and is only going to get better."
ADRIANA MALONE added 11 points and 5 assists for Valhalla (11-14,2-6),
while TIFFANIE CROSS led the Cougars with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
CASSIE GLOVER posted 8 points and 11 rebounds for SC.

Patriots' zombies lull Hoover into submission
EastCountySports.com
SAN DIEGO - Partaking in their second game in less than 24 hours
with only six players on hand, the deliberate Christian High Patriots
ran a patient offense to quietly subdue the host Hoover Cardinals
46-38 in a Harbor League (Feb. 11) outing Wednesday afternoon.
Senior RACHEL EDELEN paced the winners with 16 points.
"I'm kind of dead," noted Edelen, who has been battling
the flu the past few days. "But we weren't going to lose,
so we slowed it down."
Christian built an 11-point lead, only to see Hoover cut the deficit
to four with three minutes to go. However, Edelen, a forward,
and center KATIE GERLEK scored consecutive baskets in the paint
to keep the Cards at bay.
"They caught up, but we said, 'Heck, no,' and we finished
it," added Edelen.
Christian coach TIM JOLLETT offered extra accolades to the 6-foot-1
Gerlek, who also garnered 7 rebounds.
"Katie had her best game of the year," noted Jollett.
"As one of the taller players on the team, she's really coming
into her own."
HOLLY ERICKSON rang up 12 points and hauled down 8 rebounds for
the Patriots (13-11, 6-2).

Matadors knock off Eagles with peach-basket-like
effort
EastCountySports.com
SPRING VALLEY - It was like one of those old-fashion basketball
games where the set-shot and under-hand free throw tosses were
routine. And shot clocks were not even on the drawing board. Yet,
Mount Miguel coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL and Granite Hills coach JAY
ROWLETT like to believe that their defenses were the main ingredient
to the Matadors 30-20 Grossmont South League victory Tuesday night
(Feb.20).
"We held Mount Miguel to 30 points," chortled a should-be-sad-but-wasn't
Eagles coach Rowlett. Then, on a more sober note, Rowlett added,
"We were being aggressive, had looks, but we couldn't put
the ball in the basket. And that was the difference in the game."
This was the lowest winning score between these two teams in recent
memory. Last year Granite Hills lost 36-26 to Mount Miguel on
the road.
Those in the know recognize that both of these teams are physical
on the defensive end. Yet, Mount Miguel (19-6, 7-0) - owner of
33 consecutive league wins and closing in on a fourth straight
league title - buried the Eagles 13-2 in successes from the free
throw line.
Nobody reached double scoring figures, although Mount Miguel senior
KAYLA HENRY grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Admittedly upset by his team's lack of offensive firepower, Sandoval
was pleased by his club's defensive effort.
"(TAVASHA) YARBROUGH did a real good job on (JENNIFER)
WHITMOYER," Sandoval said. "She held Whitmoyer - their
leading scorer - to 2 of 15 shots."
Whitmoyer has an East County high 67 treys.
Yarbrough was playing in place of injured JERICA WILLIAMS, who
fractured her right middle finger last week against Helix and
will not be back until the playoffs.
"We can never get everybody healthy on the same day,"
lamented Sandoval.
The Matadors will miss Williams, their top 3-shooter who averages
11 points per game, 6.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and leads the team
with 3.7 steals per start.
"We knew tonight's game was for 1st place in league (if they
beat Monte Vista on Thursday, Feb. 12)," Sandoval added.
"So our defense stepped up for us."
Mount Miguel lost to Mission Bay 33-24 on Jan. 17. Since that
setback, the Matadors have won 7 of 8 games, holding four teams
to 20 points or less.
EL CAPITAN 71, GROSSMONT 14 - Grossmont High senior
LAURA FELICE scored only 6 points Tuesday night (Feb.10), but
had the pleasure of knowing she reached the 1,000-point career
milestone against second-ranked El Capitan.
Felice broke the 1,000-point barrier in the 2nd quarter, when
she landed her 63rd three-pointer this season, which raised her
point count to 1,001.
Grossmont called timeout and awarded its stellar scorer with a
commemorative basketball, which had been signed by her teammates.
After that, the game was all about El Capitan (22-2, 6-0).
"This was our best game of the year," said El
Capitan coach DARIN CURTIS. "Everybody contributed big."
Not that any of the Vaqueros registered a record-breaking scoring
or rebound night. It was more about holding the Hillers (10-16,
1-5) to 14 points.
HEATHER DUFFY (16 points, 11 rebounds, 5 steals) and HEATHER MOLZEN
(14 points, 8 rebounds and 5 steals) were once again the anchors
to El Capitan's success. MORGAN CRAIG, a defensive specialist,
added 8 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists.

SANTANA 52, WEST HILLS 36 - The Sultans, who have
won 13 of their last 14 games, tuned up for Thursday's (Feb.12)
Grossmont North League title bout with El Capitan, by smothering
their crosstown rivals on the strength of ROBIN APPLEBY (15 points,
11 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 steals) and MARGEAUX BASS (15 points,
including 11-for-12 free throw shooting).
"Appleby played her best game of the season," Santana
coach WADE VICKERY said.
West Hills viewed the game as a success, too.
"We tried to make it a low-scoring game, tried to stop their
running game and, I feel, we were fairly successful," West
Hills coach CARLOS MOSS said.
West Hills (15-9,2-3) was down by 10 with two minutes to play,
then had to foul. The Sultans put the game away by converting
17 of 22 free throws.
CARAMIE HUNTINGTON hit 4 three-pointers and finished with 13 points
for the Wolf Pack. Moss labeled Hunington's effort as her best
of the campaign.
Santana's focus, of course, is on Thursday's (Feb.12) winner-takes-all
Grossmont North League encounter at El Capitan.
HELIX 47, VALHALLA 30 - A 20-2 splurge in the opening quarter set the tone
for Helix's recovery against hapless Valhalla in Tuesday's (Feb.10)
Grossmont South League game.
DIANA LEASAU led the way for the Highlanders (16-9, 4-3) with
21 points, based on 9-for-16 shooting from the floor. She also
logged 5 steals, 4 rebounds and 3 steals.
"DIANA (LEASAU), RACQUEL (PRIMAS), and ASHLEY (PENN) played
well on the front line," Hathaway noted. "They got it
going up front."
Nobody reached double figures for Valhalla (10-14, 1-6).
"This game was a mirror image of Friday's (Feb. 6) game vs.
Monte Vista," Valhalla coach ROBERT WILSON said. "While
the 1st quarter mystery still looms, we never gave up or gave
in and cut the lead to 10 (26-16) in the 3rd quarter."
CORONADO 51, CHRISTIAN 37 - Any hope the visiting
Christian High Patriots (12-11, 5-2) had of winning the Harbor
League championship Tuesday night (Feb. 10) were dashed by the
recent illness of seniors RACHEL EDELEN and JAMIE RAY and the
presence of 6-foot-1 Coronado senior Alexis Castro.
"We couldn't stop Castro anywhere on the court," said
Christian coach TIM JOLLETT of the University of Vermont-bound
senior who rose above her 19.0 average to crunch Christian with
31 points. "They shot the ball really, really well.
We played them tough though, I was proud of our girls."
Ray connected for four 3-pointers on her way to a 16-point night.
Edelen settled for 9 points, which is about half her season average.
MONTE VISTA 51, STEELE CANYON 37 - SHALIA BOHANNON
scored 21 points, including hitting 7 of 8 free throws and TASHANA
HOWELL rang up 20 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals as the Monarchs
defeated visiting Steele Canyon in Tuesday's (Feb.10) Grossmont
South League action.
The Cougars (4-21, 0-7) held a 22-17 halftime lead, but wilted
under intense Monte Vista pressure in the 3rd quarter as the Monarchs
claimed a 22-3 scoring advantage over that 8-minute stretch.

Duffy floors Serra with 39 of Vaqueros'
54 points
EastCountySports.com
LAKESIDE - El Capitan High sophomore ALLISON DUFFY continued her
recent scoring spree with a 39-point effort in Saturday's (Feb.
7) non-league 54-34 romp over visiting Serra. The 6-foot-1
Duffy canned 18 of 29 shots from the field and added 3 free throws
as the Vaqueros improved to 21-2. Duffy also plucked 19 rebounds,
blocked 5 shots, recorded 5 steals and dished one assist.
"Obviously, Allison has been carrying the offensive load,"
El Capitan coach DARIN CURTIS said. "She's always finding
the angle, which makes her that much tougher to guard. And it's
not like she's just throwing up shots. Every shot she takes is
high percentage. It has a purpose."
It's been an unbelievable week for Duffy, who has scored 117 points,
grabbed 63 rebounds and blocked 10 shots in three El Capitan victories.
"You have to give some of the credit for her success to our
guards - ALISSA UNDEN (8 points, 8 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 steals),
MORGAN CRAIG (7 assists) and MALLORIE MONTGOMERY," Curtis
noted. "They pushed the ball up the court and got it inside
to Allison."
The flu and a sprained knee have bothered HEATHER MOLZEN, El Capitan's
tallest player at 6-foot-3, recently. She played sparingly against
Serra (12-10), scoring just 2 points, while blocking 3 shots and
hauling down 9 rebounds.

Sultans have their way again with Foothillers
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - As Grossmont High senior LAURA FELICE continued her
quest to reach the 1,000-point career scoring barrier Friday night
(Feb. 6), the Santana Sultans proceeded on their surge for the
Grossmont North League championship by grinding Grossmont 77-35.
Felice flipped in 12 points, giving her a career total of 995
points with four games left.
Felice is in the running to become the all-time leading scorer
for Grossmont, which includes 62 three-pointers this season.
The bout with Santana was no contest, however. The 6th-ranked
Sultans (20-4, 4-1) made it clear early on as to which of these
teams was superior, bolting to a 24-9 advantage after the first
8 minutes. It was 64-54 after three periods.
"We were pretty much in control from the outset," Santana
coach WADE VICKERY said.
Sophomore JORDAN FRANEY led the Santana charge with 19 points,
8 steals and 6 rebounds.
COURTNEY ASH added 13 points and 7 steals for the Sultans.
SAM MOHAN contributed 11 points and 8 rebounds for Grossmont (10-15,
1-4).
MOUNT MIGUEL 72, HELIX 19 - KAYLA HENRY scored half
of her 16 points in the first period, when Mount Miguel raced
to a 23-2 advantage to squish the host Highlanders in Friday's
(Feb.6) Grossmont South League encounter.
JERICA WILLIAMS also scored 7 points in the period, then added
12 more in the second en route to a 21-point effort, propelling
the Matadors to a 45-8 halftime lead.
"Jerica had an outstanding all-around game," said Mount
Miguel coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL, noting that the sophomore standout
grabbed 6 rebounds and logged 3 steals.
KAYLA HUDDLESTON generated 11 points, while GENEVIEVE COSTELLO
scored all of her 10 points in the second half and added 7 assists
and 6 steals for Mount Miguel, which has won 32 league games in
a row.
"We played extremely well," said Sandoval. "I'm
pleased with our defense. We completely took (Helix) out of their
game. We showed good balance, everybody contributed."
EL CAPITAN 88, EL CAJON VALLEY 34 - Sophomore ALLISON
DUFFY continued her binge of dominance Friday night (Feb. 6) as
the 3rd-ranked Vaqueros battered the Braves in a Grossmont North
League rout.
The 6-foot-1 Duffy scored a career-high 42 points - hitting 18
of 26 shots from the floor and 6 of 10 free throws - grabbed 22
rebounds, blocked 5 shots, swiped 7 passes and still found time
to make 3 scoring passes. In her last two games, Duffy has scored
78 points and corralled 44 rebounds.
ALISSA UNDEN chimed in with 17 points, the bulk of her input coming
on 5 three-pointers. The senior guard also had 7 assists and 4
steals.
LISA WILKINS also had a huge night for the Vaqueros with 14 rebounds,
4 points, 4 assists and two steals
MONTE VISTA 38, VALHALLA 29 - Monte Vista's TASHANA
HOWELL scored 18 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and logged 3 steals
to lead the Monarchs (15-8, 3-3) past Valhalla in Friday's (Feb.
6) Grossmont South League game at Valhalla.
"We played great defense tonight," said Monte Vista
assistant coach CHRISTY GREENE. "We focused on (CHELSEA)
KITCHENS? doubled down on her."
"(TASHANA) HOWELL had an outstanding game for us," Greene
noted. "She drove to the hoop, was really aggressive. It
was a low-scoring game because the officials called few fouls?
teams could be physical and aggressive."
Valhalla coach ROBERT WILSON agreed that the officiating was shaky.
"When your game plan is to pound the ball inside and fight
to get close shots at the basket and there are no calls going
either way inside, we were in trouble." he said. "The
quicker Monarchs were able to take less contested shots than we
were, which in this game made all the difference. We shot at grand
total of 4 foul shots, all in the fourth quarter. Monte
Vista only shot one better with 5."
"While we did not adjust well in the first quarter, losing
18-4, we sucked it up and won the remainder of the game, 25-20
(tainted due to fouling late). Most of that comeback was
due to some better outside shooting from ADRIANA MALONE and HANNAH
GERKEN.
Both teams played about 6 girls each in the dog fight and should
be commended for never giving in to pain of playing in that game.
CHRISTIAN 44, CRAWFORD 29 - Coach TIM JOLLETT's seemingly
discountable Patriots (12-10, 5-1) positioned themselves for a
shot at the Harbor League championship by taming the Colts Friday
night (Feb. 6) at the Ryan Athletic Center.
"HEATHER MEIER played her best game of the year (with 13
points)," said Jollett. "And HOLLY ERICKSON was tremendous
on the boards (with 21 rebounds). We held them to one shot each
time down the court."
Christian can gain a share of the Harbor League crown by beating
Coronado on Tuesday (Feb. 10) in the bandbox on the peninsula
at 5 p.m.
GRANITE HILLS 63, STEELE CANYON 14 - MARNESHA
HALL scored 12 points , JENNIFER WHITMOYER added 11 and MORGAN
SABALA notched 10 as Granite Hills ran over Steele Canyon in Friday's(Feb.
6) Grossmont South League game.
"We rotated everybody every few minutes," Granite Hills
coach JAY ROWLETT said. "We have to get ready for next week
-- it should be a tough week (vs. Mount Miguel and Helix)."

Bass sisters reel in victory for Sultans
in last seconds
EastCountySports.com
SANTEE (Updated 02-06-04) - When Santana coach WADE VICKERY sees
senior guard MARGEAUX BASS perform like she did in Wednesday's
(Feb. 4) battle with Grossmont South League kingpin Mount Miguel,
he can't help but think his Sultans (19-4) have a bona fide shot
at a share of the Grossmont North League crown. And possibly more
beyond that. Bass delivered the game-winning assist to her freshman
sister SHAE BASS, who converted the inbound pass into a 4-foot
bank shot in the final 2 seconds resulting in a 47-46 Santana
victory.
"To think that she had only two turnovers playing against
great pressure defense like that is just a fantastic effort on
Margeaux's part," Vickery said. "This was one of her
better game's of the year, I thought. She was totally under control
and took care of the ball."
It was almost a year ago to the day that Mount Miguel mauled the
Sultans 45-33 in the 2003 Grossmont Conference crossover match
in Spring Valley. It was a regal affair for the Matadors, who
laminated the floor with in-your-face defense as they bullied
the Sultans into 33 turnovers, while proclaiming the victory as
one of the greatest in Mount Miguel girls basketball history.
"They frustrated (point guard) Margeaux last year,"
Vickery recalled. "And they made comments about it on EastCountySports.com.
And Margeaux remembers. She was fired up for this game. She played
great."
The Santana steam was evident from the get-go even through the
Sultans watched the Matadors (17-6) forge in front 13-3.
"We made some great plays in that early part, but then missed
the shots and fell behind quickly," Vickery noted. "I
thought, oh my gosh were in trouble."
Temporarily. Sparked by JORDAN FRANEY, Santana reeled off a 10-0
run to take the bite out of a 20-9 Mount Miguel lead. The game
was a see-saw affair thereafter until the Matadors erased a 45-41
deficit on a 4-point burst by KAYLA HENRY (12 points, 11 rebounds,
3 steals).
Mount Miguel took a 46-45 advantage on a JERICA WILLIAMS free
throw with 15 seconds left. They might have salvaged a victory
had they rebounded a Margeaux Bass miss inside 10-feet with 5
seconds left.
Given a second chance, the Sultans could not be denied.
"Shae made a flash and she got there," the senior Bass
said of her younger sister's move that led to Santana's game-winning
basket. "I knew they would be really tight on (Franey) so
I had to look for someone else or call timeout."
Seeing Shae Bass shoot with her left hand did not bother any of
the Sultans even though the freshman is naturally right-handed.
"Sometimes I think she is stronger with her left-hand than
with her right," Margeaux Bass said. "She made a very
smart play with a spin move. Once I saw her break free I threw
the ball in to her."
"Shae has a pretty good left hand, so that was no fluke,"
Vickery said of the freshman Bass' game-winning bucket.
After the younger Bass had given Santana the one-point lead and
drawn a foul in the process, Vickery instructed her to intentionally
miss the free throw. Bass did so, par excellence. She hit the
back of the rim, which caused a high hop as the clock started.
"We wanted it to be a live ball because we knew Mount Miguel
had no timeouts left," Vickery said. "Shae did it perfectly.
We didn't want her to make it because if she did Mount Miguel
would have time to take the ball out and make a play."
Margeaux Bass finished with 12 points, 8 assists and 4 steals.
Franey fired in 16 points and grabbed 8 rebounds for the Sultans,
who also counted 8 points from Shae Bass and 7 from COURTNEY ASH.
"Our kids have had an amazing year," Vickery said. "I'm
telling you for us to be 19-4 is incredible."
Mount Miguel coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL gave credit to the Sultans,
but was unhappy with his team's habitual foul troubles, 40 percent
shooting from the field and 9-for-17 accuracy from the free throw
stripe.
"Santana outhustled us," Sandoval said. "We foul
too much all the time, all the time. On that last shot we talked
about switching on the screens and one of our freshman girls didn't
switch and it cost us. She's out there running to her man and
that's how Santana got the ball in (for the game-winning shot)."
VALHALLA 48, GROSSMONT 46 - In a Grossmont Conference crossover
game between North and South league also-rans Wednesday night
(Feb. 4), the host Norseman battled back from an 8-point halftime
deficit and then withstood a valiant Foothillers finish before
hanging on for the two-point victory.
The HiIlers (10-14) were led early by the hot hand of senior guard
ANNIE GONZALEZ who buried four shots in a row on her way to a
season high 13 points. LAURA "en fuego " FELICE continued
her onslaught of the 3-point race, hitting on 3 deep ones, and
finishing with a game high 18 points. She now has 59 treys to
remain in second place in the battle of long distance shooters.
ADRIANA MALONE led the way for Valhalla, also hitting 3 long balls
and finishing with a career-best 14 points to go along with 7
rebounds and 5 steals.
CHELSEA KITCHENS added 12 points and 15 boards, while LAUREN SHEPPARD
chipped in 8 points and 5 steals for Valhalla (10-12).
"The girls came to play tonight," Valhalla assistant
coach MIKE WILSON commented. "They played incredible defense
and didn't give up when Grossmont couldn't miss a shot in the
2nd quarter. The girls stepped up their defense in the 2nd half
and were awesome on the boards.
Most pleasing to Wilson was the Norsemen were able to keep Felice
and Gonzalez to a total of 8 points in second half.
"This was a great game to get us ready for the 2nd half of
league," said Wilson.
EL CAPITAN 59, GRANITE HILLS 31 - Finding an answer to
El Capitan sophomore ALLISON DUFFY is something that continues
to puzzle opposing coaches.
The 6-foot-1 Duffy played perhaps her finest game as the 3rd-ranked
Vaqueros (19-2) grounded the Eagles (14-9) in Wednesday's (Feb.
4) North-South Showcase. The gangly yet graceful Duffy delivered
career highs of 36 points and 22 rebounds for El Capitan, which
clubbed Granite Hills 35-16 in the 2nd half.
"We let Duffy do anything she wanted to do," Granite
Hills coach JAY ROWLETT said. "She hit lay-ups and free-throw
line type jumpers all night. I've never seen us get out-worked
like that before.
"We just didn't compete against a team that obviously is
better than us. When you do that, you can expect to get smacked."
Junior HEATHER MOLZEN led Duffy's supporting cast with 19 rebounds,
9 points and 4 blocked shots. MORGAN CRAIG chimed in with 7 points,
6 rebounds and a pair of assists.
ALISSA UNDEN shoveled in 5 points, pilfered 3 passes, handed out
3 assists and reeled in 4 rebounds for El Capitan, which has won
nine in a row.
"We did a good job of getting the ball to our big girls,"
Vaqueros coach DARIN CURTIS said. "Even when we got tired,
we made smart passes.
"Duffy, well, I guess her numbers speak for themselves."
Granite Hills' woes were further emphasized as the Eagles shot
a paltry 27 percent (13-for-49) from the field.
The Eagles' JENNIFER WHITMOYER ran her East County-leading three-point
shooting total to 63 with a quartet of bull's-eyes, finishing
with a team-high 14 points.
JOY EDWARDS, MORGAN SABALA and AMY HOYT each had 4 rebounds for
the Eagles. Sabala also had 4 steals.
STEELE CANYON 52, EL CAJON VALLEY 48 - The Steele Canyon
girls basketball record book isn't very thick as the Cougars are
in only their second varsity season. Nevertheless, they made a
few contributions in Wednesday's (Feb. 4) Grossmont Conference
crossover victory over visiting El Cajon Valley.
Led by the 19 rebounds of TIFFANIE CROSS and 17 more by ALEXIS
ROBINSON, Steele Canyon set a school record with 59 caroms.
The Cougars (4-19), who garnered 19 offensive rebounds in the
first two quarters, held a 25-21 edge at the break.
Normally not a great free throw shooting team, the Cougars nailed
11 of 15 shots from the charity stripe over the final four minutes
to secure the victory.
CASSIE GLOVER's free throw gave the Cougars a 49-48 lead and Cross
quickly followed with two more.
Cross, who crashed the boards for a school-record 13 offensive
rebounds, led the Cougars with 17 points. CELESTE MARTINS added
11 points, most coming on a trio of 3-pointers.
IEISHA SMITH scored a game-high 19 points - a dozen coming on
three-pointers - for El Cajon Valley (3-18) which suffered its
14th straight loss.

SAN DIEGO - HOLLY ERICKSON scored a career-high
19 points and grabbed 16
rebounds as Christian High clipped Clairemont 58-30 in a Harbor
League game
Tuesday night (Feb. 3).
Erickson, a 5-foot-8 sophomore, scored 11
points in the 2nd quarter as the
Patriots (11-10, 4-1) rambled on a 23-4 scoring run to turn the
game into a
rout.
"Holly is playing like a 1st-team all-leaguer,"
Christian High coach TIM
JOLLETT said. "She is an inspirational player to watch."
Senior RACHEL EDELEN tossed in 6 of her
game-high 22 points in the pivotal
second period, which Jollett called "almost perfect basketball.
We did an
exceptional job of scoring off the break. But as well as we played
in that
quarter, it's something that you can't expect to maintain throughout
the game."
JAMIE RAY added 10 points and HEATHER MEIER

with Harbor League-leading Coronado (15-6, 5-0), which mashed
Madison 75-29.

Wolf Pack picks up 15th win of year by dumping
Valhalla
EastCountySports.com
SANTEE - Maybe - no probably - the West Hills Wolf Pack won't
win the Grossmont North League championship. Not with Top 10 perennial
powers El Capitan and Santana guarding the gate. Members of the
Pack (15-8) must look ahead to the San Diego CIF playoffs. Latest
in that post-season surge led by first-year head coach CARLOS
MOSS, the Pack pummeled visiting Valhalla 52-33 on Monday night
(Feb. 2).
CAITLIN WEISS (16 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals), AMIE
CORDIERO (13 points, 10 rebounds, 6 steals, 4 assists) and DANIELLE
EDMONDSON (10 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals) helped West Hills
ran roughshod over host Valhalla (9-12). It was shooting accuracy
that could not be matched.
The Norsemen shot a paltry 29 percent inside the paint (12-for-41),
as the Wolf Pack romped to a 26-14 halftime lead.
To make matters worse, the Valhalla backcourt generated a mere
6 points for the evening.
"It's tough to win when you have that kind of scoring from
your guards," Wilson said.
CHELSEA KITCHENS cooked up 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead Valhalla.
DANIELLE ST. JOHN secured 12 rebounds and HANNAH GERKEN bagged
10 boards for Valhalla, which was unable to capitalize on the
offensive end.
The victory was West Hills' 9th in its last 11 starts.
MONTE VISTA 70, EL CAJON VALLEY 51 - TANISHA SHELLEY
scored a season-high 19 points, while ASHLEY MILLER rang up 13
points and 11 rebounds and TASHANA HOWELL hammered in 13 points,
grabbed 10 rebounds, nabbed 4 steals and dealt 4 assists as Monte
Vista (14-8) buried the visiting Braves Monday night (Feb.2).
El Cajon Valley (3-17), which has lost 13 in a row, received a
solid offensive boost from RAWAA PATROS, who topped the leaderless
Braves with 18 points.

East County serves up home cookin' at Vaquero
East vs. West Shootout
EastCountySports.com
LAKESIDE - The inaugural Vaquero East vs. West Shootout Saturday
(Jan. 31) at El Capitan was dominated by the five East County
entries - a clean sweep for the Inland quintets.
EL CAPITAN 47, MISSION BAY 42 - Even though 6-foot-3
junior center HEATHER MOLZEN was hampered with the flu, the No.
4 ranked Vaqueros (18-2) proved they are more than a one or two
person outfit in Saturday's (Jan. 31) finale of the Vaquero Shootout.
"Maybe she isn't a (Charde) Houston or a (Candace) Wiggins,
but I sure wouldn't trade ALLISON DUFFY for anyone out there,"
said El Capitan coach DARIN CURTIS. "She's a big girl who
has big nights in big games. She has to be at least one of the
top five players in the county."
Duffy, a 6-foot-1 agile sophomore, produced 25 points and 22 rebounds
as the Vaqueros bucked No. 7-ranked Mission Bay (14-4). Twelve
of Duffy's points came in the 3rd quarter as El Capitan secured
a 36-33 lead.
"She has a another gear that nobody else has," Curtis
said.
El Capitan's twin towers were expected to be challenged by Mission
Bay's 6-foot-4 center Amber Sprague, who, suffering from a back
injury, was rationed to 10 points. With Molzen's play limited
due to illness, the battle shaped up as one between Duffy and
Sprague. It was no contest.
Mission Bay had the game in hand late in the first half, sitting
on a 10-point lead until El Capitan senior ALISSA UNDEN hit a
pair of 3-pointers and a lay-up in the final 90 seconds of the
2nd quarter to close the deficit to 21-19 by intermission.
Unheralded El Capitan sophomore LISA WILKENS came off the bench
to hit a clutch 3-pointer in the 3rd quarter and another in the
final period to help the Vaqueros to seal the impressive victory.
Amanda Rego led the Bucs with 13 points.
"Rego is the best point guard in town," Curtis said.
"We had MORGAN CRAIG on her all night, and had double-team
help when the situation warranted. We wanted to keep her from
making assists. I think we did a good job of keeping from lobbing
the ball inside to Sprague."
A sound formula for victory as it turned out.
SANTANA 62, EASTLAKE 48 - In a battle of top county
teams, No. 8 Santana (18-4) toppled the Titans (16-5) in Saturday's
(Jan. 31) Vaquero Shootout.
"I thought this was one of our best three games of the year,"
Santana coach WADE VICKERY said. "Defensively it was the
best we've played since beating Rancho Bernardo (52-50 on Dec.
17). We played both great individual defense and great team defense.
We made it difficult for (Eastlake) to get an easy shot."
JORDAN FRANEY led the Sultans at the offensive end with 20 points,
which included hitting 10 of 13 free throws. The sophomore sensation
netted 8 of 10 charity shots in the final quarter as Santana short-circuited
any comeback hopes Eastlake had in mind.
COURTNEY ASH added 10 points, 5 steals, 5 deflections and 4 rebounds
for Santana, while MARGEAUX BASS added 8 points and 8 assists.
AMIE LEACH muscled in 9 points and hauled down 5 rebounds.
MOUNT MIGUEL 64, BISHOP'S 45 - Obviously hampered
by playing without junior point guard GENEVIEVE COSTELLO for the
third straight game (injured), the Matadors managed to prove that
they are truly one of San Diego County's finest girls basketball
teams.
KAYLA HENRY (26 points) and JERICA WILLIAMS (22 points) each registered
season highs as the Matadors (17-5) crowned the Knights for the
second time this season. Mount Miguel earned an earlier checkmate
47-40 on Dec. 29.
"We kept pounding the ball inside," Mount Miguel coach
ROBBIE SANDOVAL said. "And Kayla and Jerica capitalized all
night."
Filling in for absentee Costello was freshman VICTORIA MURPHY,
who was credited with 3 assists and one steal.
Williams led the Matadors with 10 rebounds , 5 assists and one
steal. Henry added 3 blocks and 6 rebounds, while MONIQUE CLAYTON
kicked in 8 points and 5 rebounds.
GROSSMONT 47, CLAIREMONT 32 - Throwing their first
shutout of the season, the Grossmont Foothillers held the Clairemont
Chieftains scoreless in the 2nd quarter, and coasted to victory
in the opening act of Saturday's (Jan.31) Vaquero Shootout
extravaganza.
Grossmont senior sharpshooter LAURA FELICE, who fired in 4 more
treys to give her 53 for the season, led the Hillers with a game-high
21 points. She was 8-for-15 from the field, including making half
of her 8 shots from above the arc.
SAMANTHA MOHAN played a strong supporting role for Grossmont (10-13)
as she scored 17 points on 7-for-8 shooting.
MICHELLE GONZALEZ, her sister ANNIE, CHRISTINE SULLIVAN and KENDRA
MYERS all took turns controlling the glass as each finished with
6 rebounds.
GRANITE HILLS 39, UNIVERSITY CITY 15 - Freshman MORGAN
SABALA scored a season-high 19 points - including a career-high
five 3-pointers - to send the Eagles soaring past hapless University
City in Saturday's (Jan. 31) Vaquero Shootout Classic at El Capitan.
Sabala did the bulk of her scoring in the 3rd period when the
Eagles (14-8) turned a 14-11 halftime lead into a rout with a
17-0 blitz. Sabala poured in 11 of her points in that period,
the majority coming on her trio of 3-point bull's-eyes.
Despite the relatively easy victory, Granite Hills coach JAY ROWLETT
was not pleased by the Eagles' overall performance.
"I thought we played great defense, but we can't beat good
teams with 9-for-32 free throw shooting like we did today,"
he said.

Highlanders get job done on road with rally
in fourth
EastCountySports.com
SPRING VALLEY - In the Grossmont South League's scramble for third
place and a possible key playoff position, the visiting Helix
Highlanders outlasted host Monte Vista 64-60 in Friday night 's
(Jan. 30) battle of archrivals.
Following consecutive 3-balls by TANISHA SHELLEY and TASHANA HOWELL,
Monte Vista (13-8, 2-3) claimed its biggest lead of the game at
56-52 and seemed destined to finally rid itself of pesky Helix.
Trouble is, the Highlanders (15-8,3-2) had other ideas,
Over the final 4:16, DIANA LEASAU scored eight of her game-best
25 points, as the Scotties went on a 12-2 scoring binge without
allowing a basket until the final two seconds to shock the host
Monarchs.
"We knew we had to play hard and play with heart," said
Diana Leasau, a sophomore, who scored 16 points in the second
half in a seesaw affair, which saw 17 lead changes and the game
tied on nine occasions. "After they made those threes, we
knew we had to shut them down."
The Helix comeback was ignited by ASHLEY PENN, who stole the ball
and dribbled uncontested for a lay-up, then was fouled after taking
a neat pass from CHASITY TOILOLO, sinking both foul shots to knot
the contest at 56-all with 2:41 remaining.
"Our defense was partially tight, but I got burned on back
doors a couple of times," noted Penn. "That helped push
me and get me motivated to work harder."
Diana Leasau did the rest. After scoring off an offensive rebound
to secure the lead at the 2:13 mark, she made a spin move in the
lane to fool a defender, dropping in a 5-footer. She then took
a pass from her sister MELE LEASAU to sink a baseline jumper before
adding two additional foul shots in the closing seconds.
Howell led the Monarchs with 22 points, including seven points
in the 4th period, while Shelley added a season-high 18 points.
Toilolo was limited to six points by a hounding defense, but she
returned the favor by rejecting four shots, including a stuff
on a 3-point attempt while garnering 9 of her 212 rebounds in
the second half. Meanwhile, Penn finished with 15 points.
"Ashley has been in a slump, but she had two big threes in
the 3rd quarter," Helix coach WILLIE HATHAWAY said. "Mele
hit a couple of big threes in the second quarter."
WEST HILLS 53, GROSSMONT 29 - Mixing up defenses,
running the court well, and spreading around the rock is a good
formula for winning a basketball team. The visiting Wolf Pack
did all that and more Friday night (Jan. 30) as it beat a plucky
but undermanned Grossmont team in a Grossmont North league engagement.
The Hillers managed to stay close for about a minute into the
2nd quarter, utilizing the crowd electricity generated by the
season's first boys-girls league doubleheader.
The Wolf Pack (14-8, 2-2), however, found its own power source
in MUAAU NADERHOFF as she scored 7 of her game-high 15 points
in the 2nd quarter which allowed the Pack to pull away to a 16-point
halftime margin.
AIME CORDEIRO's game-high 13 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and
4 points generated West Hills. CARAMIE HUNTINGTON pumped in 10
points, corralled 5 rebounds and handed out 3 assists for the
playoff-conscious Pack.
The Hillers' LAURA FELICE opened the 3rd quarter with her 51st
and 52nd three- pointers of the season. West Hills answered with
buckets by CAITLIN WEISS, DANIELLE EDMONDSON, CHELSEY HOWARD,
and Naderhoff (4 rebounds, 3 assists and a block).
The Wolf Pack put nine players in the scoring column as the Foothillers
simply ran out of juice and fell to 1-3 in league.
"There were a lot of assists (19) in this game. We did a
good job feeding the post," said West Hills assistant coach
SIG CHABROWSKI. "Caitlin had 9 and Aime 4, and Caramie and
Muaau each had 3."
Felice led Grossmont with 11 points, while SAM MOHAN contributed
8 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists.
CHRISTIAN 75, MADISON 35 - Senior RACHEL EDELEN went
on a scoring rampage, dumping in a season-high 33 points (14 field
goals, 5 free throws) and also found time to dish off 10 assists
Friday night (Jan. 30) to lead the visiting Patriots (10-10, 3-1)
to the lopsided Harbor League victory.
"It's good to play well against every team you play,"
said Christian coach TIM JOLLETT. "I was proud of the
girls -- they kept up the intensity of their game."
HEATHER MEIER and BRITNI McCASKILL added 10 points apiece, while
HOLLY ERICKSON hauled down a career-high 17 rebounds.
GRANITE HILLS 56, VALHALLA 25 - Host Granite Hills
maintained its hold on second place in the Grossmont South by
squashing the Norsemen Friday (Jan. 30).
The star of this show was Granite Hills senior JENNIFER WHITMOYER,
who hit 6 three-pointers to raise her East County lead to 58.
Whitmoyer finished with 20 points. She was the only player in
the game to reach double figures.
"We got off to a sluggish start, but our energy level went
up in the second half," said Eagles coach JAY ROWLETT.
"We played outstanding defense the whole game.
Whitmoyer was left open the whole game."
ADRIANNA MALONE led Valhalla (9-11, 1-4) with 8 points.
MOUNT MIGUEL 58, STEELE CANYON 19 - Match-ups such
as this are formulas for disaster.
LEASHAWN JOHNSON punched in 11 points, rang up 11 rebounds and
dished 3 assists while notching a trio of steals as the high-powered
Matadors (16-5,5-0) stretched their Grossmont South League winning
streak to 31 games in a row Friday night (Jan. 30) by bulldozing
the host Steele Canyon in a game that was never in doubt.
KAYLA "Baby Shaq" HENRY hammered the Cougars (3-19,
0-5) for 14 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 blocks, while MONIQUE
CLAYTON cashed in 13 points, 9 steals, 6 rebounds and 2 assists.
Mount Miguel pressed early, but called off the jam quickly. Nevertheless,
the Cougars turned the ball over 40 times.
CELESTE MARTINS led the Cougars with 10 points. TIFFANIE CROSS
added 7 points. No other statistics were available for Steele
Canyon.
SANTANA 70, EL CAJON VALLEY 30 - A dozen Sultans
pitched in to Santana's latest rout Friday night (Jan. 30) at
El Cajon Valley.
ROBIN APPLEBY topped the scoring list with 10 points, while AMIE
LEACH landed 8 points and 6 rebounds and MARGEAUX BASS made 5
steals for Santana (17-4, 3-1).
"Everybody played equal time and everybody contributed equally,"
said Santana coach WADE VICKERY.
