Following its third consecutive San Diego CIF Division I team championship, and owners of the longest undefeated streak in county history, credentials for several of the Eagles were impressive. So, in order to form a more perfect list of honorees, we yield to Granite Hills coach Sami Nedjar. "We had a lot of people put out outstanding efforts this season," said Nedjar. "But if you have to pick one, it has to be Anthony Putrus. He's the glue that kept this team together." Thus, Putrus, a senior midfielder, receives the distinction as East County Player of the Year. Putrus joined fellow Eagles Kyle Hewitt and Alex Yoshinaga as first-team berth on both the East County team, and the Breitbard Hall of Champions All-County team as well. Also representing Granite Hills on the EastCountySports.com role of honor was Darin DeVore, who was voted Grossmont South League Player of the Year by the coaches, oalie Thomas Ryan, and forward Rudy Romero. Two separate organizations have deemed the team worthy of Top 10 honors. Student Sports Inc. rated the Eagles number three in their final ranking of the season. Granite made it two straight Top 10 finishes in the Student Sports Winter Boys Soccer FAB 50 ranking system. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America rated the Eagles as their top team in the western region and as their No. 1 team in the nation. The team went 28 wins, 0 losses and 3 ties on the year. During the regular season, they won the 24th Annual Grossmont Tournament, the Oceanside Nautical Cup and the Grossmont South League. In the post-season they won their third straight CIF San Diego Section, Division 1 Championship. The team is unbeaten in a section record, 56 straight games. Schmit led the Hillers in scoring to give Grossmont its second section title in four seasons, and will advance to the University of Texas on a full-ride scholarship. She also received a first-team berth on the Breitbard Hall of Champions All-County team as selected by a panel of media, and was the Division II San Diego CIF player of the year in voting by the coaches. The other 11 members of the All-East County first team also received salutation on the All-County team, including first-team selections Sam Hire (Christian), Jenna Winslow (El Capitan), Samantha Spatter (Monte Vista), and Meredith Loeffler (Valhalla). Hire was the Harbor League Player of the Year, leading the Patriots to not only the league title, but the SDCIF Division IV championship as well. Hire also established SDCIF section records for assists in season and a game (9 vs. Kearny). The midfielder is also an honors student with a 4.25 grade-point average. Spatter left an impression on the coaches, who voted her Grossmont South League Player of the Year. Spatter and Hire, along with Katie McCoy of Grossmont and Valhalla's Anjie Goulding, are the lone underclassmen - all juniors - among the senior-dominated selections.
