Helix pitchers are a 'perfect' pair

EastCountySports.com

LA MESA - ADRIANA DeJONG and SARAH ALBERTS retired all 15 batters they faced
Wednesday (Apr. 2), finishing with a 5-inning perfect game in drowning the
visiting Mission Bay Buccaneers, 10-0, at Helix. The game was called by the
mercy rule.

DeJong struck out five of the nine batters she faced through three innings,
then Alberts fanned half of the six Bucs she faced in making easy fare of the
opponents from the Western League.

The Highlanders (6-4) scored six times in the first inning, then received a
bolt from the blue when SIPAU LEE-NOA cleared the left field fence with a
mammoth three-run homer. Lee-Noa, the third baseman, finished 2-for-3
including a booming double, scoring twice.

"I went with an outside curve and hit the corners well, "said DeJong, who
aided her own cause with two hits and a run batted in.

First baseman LAUREN BRADY, shortstop DANIELLE GLENN, catcher CHRISSY SOVERNS
and pinch hitter HEATHER NICHOLS also collected an RBI each for the Scotties.

Helix is off for nearly two weeks before resuming play Apr. 14 in the
Longhorn Tournament at Rancho Buena Vista High.

El Capitan's ASHLEY SAMPO singles to start a rally in the seventh inning Tuesday (4-1-03).

Thornton rises to occasion to put Pack on top in North
EastCountySports.com

SANTEE - Freshman starter MARA THORNTON scattered five hits and survived a
seventh-inning rally, propelling the West Hills Wolf Pack into first place in
the Grossmont North League after nipping visiting El Capitan, 1-0, on Tuesday
(Apr. 1).

Two of the hits Thornton allowed came in the 7th, but the freshman registered
the final of her six strikeouts to end the ballgame in a battle of unbeaten
teams in league competition.

"I put movement on the ball, but I didn't throw a riser because El Capitan is
known for hitting the riser," said Thornton. "But on the last batter, she
went after two high pitches, so I thought I'd try a riser on her, figuring
she'd go for it."

The lone run came in the first inning and was unearned due to an error.

Arizona transfer MARKIE VARELA opened the Wolf Pack day with a bunt single,
one of her career-high three hits. DENISE TRIPLETT sacrificed her to second,
then NATASHA CHOUINARD lined a single to right. However, when the ball went
under the right-fielder's glove, Varela easily raced home.

"I didn't think that run would hold up," said Varela, a junior who relocated
here two years ago when her father accepted a new job. "I was pretty excited
getting on base - I had to do it because that's what the leadoff batter does."

West Hills had two other excellent chances to score, but clean-up batter
KASIE MYTINGER twice hit into tough luck with the bases loaded. In the third,
her smash of a line drive to shortstop was snagged and converted into an
inning-ending double play. And a deep drive to center in the fifth was hauled
in at the warning track.

However, the Wolf Pack defense, which looked shaky at the Cougar Classic,
turned in several key stops, including a diving grab by ERICA TORRES in
center in the third.

"That's my trademark," said Torres of her fully-extended grab. "It's one of
the few things I can do to help the team."

Varela has noticed a significant difference in West Hills since the
tournament at Kit Carson Park.

"In the last three weeks, we've picked-up our hitting and not watching too
many strikes go by," she noted. "And we're getting a little bit better on
defense -- we're jelling as a team."

ASHLEY SAMPO collected two of the Vaqueros five hits. Losing pitcher COURTNEY
BELL allowed seven hits and struck out two.

West Hills shortstop Markie Varela slaps one of her three hits on the day, as El Cap catcher Mallory Palmer watches. Varela scored the game's only run in a battle of teams in North League play Tuesday (4-1-03).

GROSSMONT 1, SANTANA 0 - Freshman DOMONIQUE GUERRA fired a 1-hit shutout at
host Santana in Tuesday's (April 1) Grossmont North League activity.

Although MARGUEAUX BASS' 1st inning single spoiled any thoughts Guerra had of
spinning a no-hitter, the Foothillers (7-5, 2-2) were handcuffed by Santana's
KIRSTEN MUDRUD through five innings before finally finding the plate in the
6th.

In the 6th, Grossmont's TAWNIE PETERSON singled to center, advanced to second
base on BRITTANY GARCIA's sacrifice bunt. When the Sultans bungled the bunt,
the Foothillers were left with runners at the corners with nobody out. TARYIN
CASILLAS plated Peterson with the only run of the game with a sacrifice fly
to right field.

Santana slipped to 7-3 overall and 0-2 against league foes.

PATRICK HENRY 3, CHRISTIAN 0 - The Patriots of Christian wasted a strong
pitching performance by MELISSA OWENS as they fell to 0-2 against Eastern
League competition on Tuesady (April 1) at home.

Owens, who struck out 5 and walked one, also furnished what little offense
her team had with a double down the left field line in the 4th inning.

Christian (6-4 overall) committed three errors - all of which came in Henry's
scoring innings.

With score hanging at 0-0 entering the 5th, Henry's Danielle Bryan doubled.

"We had her dead to rights going to third (base) on an infield grounder, but
our third baseman dropped the ball," Christian coach ROMA DAWSON lamented.
But Bryan eventually scored what proved to be the winning run when Owens
issued her only walk with the bases loaded in the 5th.

In the 6th, Jackie Dixon doubled and scored on a two-out error to make it
2-0. The scenario was much the same in the 7th frame as Henry scored its
final tally on a two-out error.

VALHALLA 9, CASTLE PARK 0 - Valhalla's LACEY WILSON shut down the visiting
Trojans in Tuesday's (Apr. 1) Falcon-Fiesta Tournament contest.

Wilson, (1-3-1), a victim of a couple bitter defeats earlier this season,
was in command the entire game allowing only a bloop single to right field in
the last inning. Wilson has been the hard luck loser in 3 games this season,
due to Valhalla's having scored only one run in her previous 4 starts.

The Norsemen unloaded on Castle Park though, smacking 9 hits including 3
doubles.

MICHELLE BATCHELOR had a single and a double. WHITNEY HOLUM and COURTNEY
LUDWIG hit doubles, while SAVANNAH BROWN, LISA WOODEND, JAMIE McNALLY, Wilson
and RANDI THOMPSON all added singles. Valhalla is now 5-3-1 on the season.

Norsemen blank Braves behind pitching combo
EastCountySports.com

EL CAJON - Valhalla pitchers STEPHANIE SWEAT and RANDI THOMPSON combined on
a one-hit shutout, and were aided by the arm of center-fielder LISA WOODEND,
as the Norsemen took advantage of six unearned runs to race past the visiting
Braves, 7-0, Monday (Mar. 31) at Valhalla's Leto Diamond.

El Cajon Valley committed eight errors en route to its fifth straight setback
following three victories to open the season. Meanwhile, Valhalla leaped over
the .500 barrier at 4-3-1 overall.

Sweat only allowed a fourth-inning single by Braves clean-up batter DANIELLE
PEREZ, who lined a single to center. TAWNI MACKE was sent home from second
base on the play, but catcher KIM HAYDEN blocked the plate as the throw from
Woodend was on target for the out to preserve the shutout.

Hayden later added an RBI double to center, capping a 4-run rally in the home
half of the fourth. The only other runs driven in were from ALLISON JOHNSON
on a fielder's choice in the 2nd and WHITNEY HOLUM's sharp single down the
left-field line in the fifth.

Holum was the lone player to register a multiple-hit outing, going 2-for-3
with two runs scored, raising her season batting average to a spectacular
.657.

El Cajon Valley pitcher MICHAELA CRAIN deserved a better fate as she was
charged with just one earned run, setting down the final seven Norsemen she
faced. Crain struck out four.
(03-31-03)

CARLSBAD 2, VALHALLA 1 - The visiting Norsemen, who had previously played the
Lancers 9-1 in the Cougar Classic, couldn't make it a repeat performance in
Saturday's (Mar. 29) third round of the Falcon-Fiesta Classic. Tough luck
pitcher LACEY WILSON took the loss, she is now 0-3-1 on the year despite
giving up only 4 runs in those 4 games. Carlsbad got on the board first when
Ginalee Davis connected for a 2-run single in the 3rd inning.

Valhalla staged a late rally in the 7th but couldn't get that last big hit.
TORRE BUCKLES started the inning off with a hard hit to center field. LISA
WOODEND kept the rally going with a walk, and WHITNEY HOLUM knocked in
Buckles with a sharp single to center. But the rally would end there. Holum
also had a double in the 4th while SAVANNAH BROWN and MICHELLE BATCHELOR
added singles.

Hemet comes to town to sweep Monarchs
EastCountySports.com

SPRING VALLEY -SIG CHABROWKSI witnessed a first in his four years as Monte
Vista's softball coach on Saturday (Mar. 29) as Hemet's Helen Hitchcock
belted a solo homer over the Monarchs' left field fence in the 8th inning of
the Bulldogs 10-5 victory. That blast was part of a 5-run inning and the
springboard to Hemet's sweep of a non-league double-header. The Bulldogs won
the nightcap 4-3 on Cathy Camacho's RBI single in the bottom of the 7th
inning.

Hemet (10-5) banged out 17 hits in the opener, including 8 doubles, a triple
and Hitchcock's homer.

LYNDSAY CALHOUN was 3-for-5 and SARAH CASTILLO chipped in with a two-run
single for Monte Vista in the opener.

In game two, the Monarchs (5-6-1) rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tie the score
3-3 on ALYSHA DAIGLE's two-run single up the middle in the top of the 6th.
Daigle then displayed her defensive dynamics in the 7th inning when she
snagged a pop-up her catcher's helmet for an out.

As fine a play as Daigle made, it only delayed the outcome as Hemet's Camacho
cracked a game-winning single in the bottom in the following at-bat,

Monte Vista overcame a 3-1 deficit with 2 runs in the 6th inning. Once again,
Daigle was the principal player as she stroked a single up the middle to
score MELANIE MASSEY and DONALEE LEWIS.

Monte Vista missed an early chance when it loaded the bases with one out in
the 4th only to come up empty.

GRANITE HILLS 8, POINT LOMA 5 - The Eagles pounced on the Pointers by
scoring six times in the first inning in Wednesday's (Mar. 26) play-in
contest, capped by a two-run double to left field by BECCA TAYLOR. VANESSA
MORENA later added a two-run homer to left in the 4th to advance the Eagles
into the main draw of the championship round of the Hilltop Tournament.

Saturday's, Mar. 29 - Quarterfinals:
MIRA MESA 8, EL CAPITAN 4 -
Winning pitcher Chanel Pangilinan, who
appropriately wears uniform No. 5, survived a Vaqueros rally in the 3rd to
finally eliminate El Capitan (5-2) in the quarterfinals. Staked to a 4-0 lead
in the second, the Vaqueros scored three times on an RBI double by MALLORY
PALMER, followed by a two-run single by HEATHER LOCHER.

However, Pangilinan aided her own cause with a two-run homer in the home half
of the 3rd, pushing the lead back to 6-3. She struck out three for the
Marauders (8-2).

GRANITE HILLS 11, LA JOLLA 1 - Already leading 6-0, the Eagles erupted for
five additional runs in the 6th to sink the Vikings. The rally was
highlighted by an RBI triple to left by JESSICA TALMAN, then ALISON TINO
followed with a two-run home run to centerfield to cap her 3-4 performance.
Meanwhile, CHARNEL FETSCH and LACY TONER combined on a four-hitter.

BONITA VISTA 4, SANTANA 0 - Emily Turner spun a one-hit shutout to hand the
Sultans their second straight loss after opening the season with seven
consecutive victories. The lone Santana hit was a single by JEN KRISMER with
two out in the 4th.

Semifinals:
BONITA VISTA 7, GRANITE HILLS 0 -
The Barons ran their season ledger to 11-0
by whipping the Eagles in the semifinals behind a three-hitter from pitcher
Christine Minter. VALERIE VITALE registered two of the hits for Granite
Hills, which settled for third place in the event.

Grossmont's Alex Sobel pitches to a West Hills batter Friday.

Wolf Pack puts the squeeze on Foothillers for 1-0 victory
EastCountySports.com

EL CAJON - West Hills senior MELISSA GUINN squeezed home KELLIE BRYAN in the
top of the 7th inning Friday (Mar. 28), while the host Foothillers left the
bases loaded in their final turn at the plate. The two teams played yet
another 1-0 ballgame in the longtime series, with the Wolf Pack this time
gaining the nod.

The ballgame was decided by mere inches in both halves of the final frame.

Bryan opened the 7th with a walk, then advanced to third on a bloop single by
KASEY MYTINGER and a sacrifice bunt from AMY JOHNSON. Bryan then barely
avoided a sweep tag by Grossmont catcher ASHLEY LOVELADY when she headed home
on Guinn's bunt, which tapped to the left of the plate.

"I had to evade her because she came up the line a little bit to field the
ball," said Bryan. "She was too far in front of the plate, so I was able to
curve around her."

Guinn, who hopes to head to San Diego State for soccer next year,
demonstrated solid control of the bat on the inside pitch.

"I knew I had to get it down and I did my job," noted Guinn. "Last year, it
was us against them all year, with El Capitan in there a little bit, so it
feels good to get our first win against them."

Meanwhile, Wolf Pack pitcher MARA THORNTON, who allowed just four hits all
contest, escaped a major jam after one runner reached on an error and a pair
of walks loaded the bases.

"Both teams had a chance, but Grossmont seemed to be too aggressive and made
some mistakes," said Thornton, who didn't strike out a batter yet captured
her second victory in 24 hours. "But their pinch-hitter came straight at me
and almost won the game because of it."

With two on and one out, Foothillers coach JERRY LERUD decided to pull his
clean-up hitter, who was having difficulty hitting Thornton, sending
diminutive TIFFANY GARCIA to the plate. She lined a shot down the left-field
line which would have tied the game and placed the winning run in scoring
position, but the umpire ruled the hard grounder foul.

"It barely hit our third-baseman, but I guess her glove was in foul
territory," noted Thornton.

Grossmont also was unlucky on a hopper up the middle from leadoff batter
LIQUEA BLACKMON. Instead of going through the middle for a single, Thornton
got a piece of the ball, allowing second baseman Bryan to complete the play
to first.

Second baseman LISA GREEN recorded two hits for the Hillers (6-4, 1-2).

Hard-luck losing pitcher ALEX SOBEL once retired 10 consecutive Wolf Pack
batters, carrying a no-hitter into the sixth before NATASHA CHOUINARD slapped
a clean single to center with two outs.

Sobel finished with a two-hitter and struck out seven, but Grossmont suffered
its third 1-0 setback in four outings. They sandwiched a triumph over El
Cajon Valley around losses to La Costa Canyon and El Capitan.

West Hills (4-4-1, 2-0), meanwhile, moved into a tie for the Grossmont North
lead with idle El Capitan (5-1, 2-0).

Grossmont second baseman Lisa Green covers first to record the out on West Hills batter Amy Johnson, who laid down a sacrifice bunt in the fifth inning Friday afternoon (3-29-03).

MONTE VISTA 8, CHRISTIAN 3 - In an unusually high scoring affair, the
Monarchs (5-4-1) snapped a 3-3 tie with 5 runs in the bottom of the 6th
inning Friday (Mar. 28) and continued on for the Falcon Fiesta Tournament
victory. Christian (6-3) was denied its final turn at-bat due to the
tournament's 1 hour, 40-minute time limit.

Monte Vista built a 3-0 lead on a passed ball, a groundout and a fielder's
choice and maintained that advantage on the strength of pitcher MELISSA
BARRON through 5 innings.

The visiting Patriots popped up off the mat to create a tie with 3 runs in
the 6th inning. NATALIE BREEDEN singled and scored on MELISSA OWENS' double.
KYLEEN MURRAY clubbed an RBI triple and KELLIE MURRAY singled her in to knot
the count at 3-all.

Seemingly undaunted by Christian's comeback, Monte Vista put together one of
its most productive innings in two years. ALYSHA DAIGLE singled and stole
second to get the Monarchs started. Walks to LYNDSAY CALHOUN and BROOKE
FOGWELL loaded the bases.

SARAH CASTILLO followed with one of the Monarchs' most exciting hits of the
season as she tripled with the bases loaded to put Monte Vista in front 6-3.
At that point, scoring had become contagious as RBI singles by Barron and
MELANIE MASSEY - along with the tournament stopwatch - sealed the Monte Vista
victory.

Barron twirled a 5-hitter and struck out 6 while tucking away her 3rd win
without a loss.

West Hills' Natasha Chouinard scores in the bottom of the 2nd Thursday
(3-27-03) against El Cajon Valley catcher Nicole Cope as the Braves' pitcher Marissa Utley looks on.

Thornton shuts down Braves, Pack ready for Hillers
EastCountySports.com

EL CAJON - An experienced team can often overcome a defensive error, while younger sides must learn to make the adjustment. The improving El Cajon Valley Braves displayed their youth Thursday (Mar. 27), as a simple error unleashed the floodgates to the tune of 7 unearned runs allowed in the first inning, as the visiting Wolf Pack glided to a 13-0 victory.

West Hills pitcher MARA THORNTON, a freshman, scattered 4 hits to register the shutout in her team's Grossmont North League opener after receiving an opening day bye.

"It's a nice way to open league," said Thornton. "This school has won league 5 of the last 7 years and we want to do it again. I guess Grossmont is our main rival because every time we play them, they come hard to play against us, so we'll have to come out and play to our best level."

The Wolf Pack (3-4-1, 1-0) travel to Grossmont (6-4, 1-1) on Friday (Mar. 28) for a 3:30 p.m. showdown.

NATASHA CHOUINARD, getting a day off from her regular pitching chores, aided the Pack with the bat, recording two hits and scoring twice. MELISSA GUINN
also added two hits.

El Cajon Valley (3-4, 0-2) received a pair of hits from junior TAWNI MACKE.

EL CAPITAN 1, GROSSMONT 0 - El Capitan junior COURTNEY BELL gave up a
first-inning single to TARYIN CASILLAS and then held the visiting Foothillers
in check over the final 6 1/3 innings to gain the nod in Thursday's (Mar. 27)
Grossmont North League contest in Lakeside.

Grossmont's DOMONIQUE GUERRA matched Bell pitch-for-pitch until the 7th
inning when a wild pitch with the bases loaded gave El Capitan (5-1, 2-0) the
victory and the lead in the Grossmont North.

KIMBERLY WHITLOW started the winning inning with a double down the left-field
line. ALYSSA LOVEDAY followed with a sharp bunt. Grossmont shortstop Casillas
charged in to play the ball, and fired to third baseman TAWNIE PETERSON to
nail Whitlow for the first out.

El Capitan's ASHLEY SAMPO and ALISSA UNDEN followed with singles to load the
bases with one out. When Guerra uncorked a wild pitch, Loveday raced home for
the game-winner.

In the top of the 7th inning, Grossmont's LISA GREEN drew a walk - the only
free pass allowed by Bell. After Casillas skied out to center field, Peterson
lined into an inning-ending double play.

"Peterson hit the ball hard, but that was about it for us," Grossmont coach
JERRY LERUD, noting the Hillers had only two base-runners.

Bell (4-0) had only one strikeout, but never permitted a Grossmont runner to
reach second base.

Guerra struck out 4 and walked 2 for the Foothillers.

Christian's KELLI MURRAY races home on a double by MELISSA OWENS against Scripps Ranch Thursday (3-27-03).

SCRIPPS RANCH 3, CHRISTIAN 2 (10) - Another fast start for the visiting
Patriots, who scored 2 runs in the 1st inning of Thursday's (Mar. 27) Eastern
League opener. Unfortunately, they couldn't provide an equally as swift
finish.

Scripps Ranch (5-4, 1-0) broke a 2-2 tie in the 10th inning when Danni Castro
tripled and scored on Chelsie Tysdale's infield single.

Christian (6-2, 0-1) galloped out of the gate when KELLI MURRAY walked, stole second, and
raced home on a double by MELISSA OWENS. KYLEE MURRAY then cashed in pinch-runner KIM GILES
with a base hit.

After the Falcons cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the 1st,
the Patriots missed a chance to expand their advantage when they stranded
runners at second and third in the 4th inning.

In addition to her complete-game pitching, Owens was 2-for-3 with a walk at
the plate.

The Patriots resume the Falcon-Fiesta Tournament on Friday (Mar. 28) when
they travel to Monte Vista for a 3:30 p.m. contest.

(Ore.) Taft's Britiany Palmer (1) scores on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh Wednesday (3-26-03) against El Capitan.

Oregon's Birdsong outduels Vaqueros' Locher, 1-0
EastCountySports.com

LAKESIDE - In softball, if you have a pitcher, you can win - and do the Taft
High Tigers of the coastal community of Lincoln City, Ore., have a pitcher.

Sophomore right-hander Ashley Birdsong came within one batter of her third
perfect game of the young season Wednesday (Mar. 26), as Taft nipped El
Capitan,1-0, handing the Vaqueros their first loss of the season in five
starts.

Birdsong, who struck out 22 Hilltop batters over 10 innings in Monday's 1-0
triumph over Hilltop, fanned a dozen Vaqueros as she improved her record and
the team's mark to 4-0.. She opened the season with consecutive perfect games
in Oregon, and now owns a perfect 0.00 earned-run average through 31 innings
this season.

Birdsong set down the first 20 El Capitan batters she faced, only to have
catcher Mallory Palmer ruin the perfecto with a sharp, ground single through
the left-side of the Tigers infield.

"My rise ball was working for me," said Birdsong. "I was getting some calls
on the pitch, then (El Cap) started swinging at them, too. So I just let them
climb the ladder."

The pitchers' duel remained scoreless until Taft finally scored the game's
lone run in the top half of the seventh.

Britiany Palmer led off with a walk, was sacrificed to second, then moved to
third on a ground ball to the right side of the diamond. Palmer then scored
on a wild pitch, dulling what otherwise was a strong effort in the first
career start for Vaqueros left-hander Heather Locher (left). The senior finished
with a 2-hitter.

Santana reliever Kristen Medrud delivers to catcher Laurie Lindow against El Capitan Tuesday afternoon.

Run in first holds up for Norsemen behind Sweat shutout

EastCountySports.com staff report

EL CAJON - The Valhalla Norsemen defeated visiting Patrick Henry 1-0 on
Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 25) behind pitcher STEPHANIE SWEAT in a Falcon Fiesta
Tournament game. It was Sweat's 3rd win of the season without a loss.

The Patriots outhit the Norsemen 4 to 1 but they could not score.

Credit Valhalla for supplying Sweat - who has given up just 3 runs in 6 games
- with outstanding defense. JAMIE McNALLY, MICHELLE BATCHELOR and WHITNEY
HOLUM all contributed with strong defensive plays.

The Norsemen (3-2-1) scored the only run the 1st inning. Leadoff hitter Lisa
Woodend reached base on a wide throw, stole second and scored on Holum's RBI
single to right center. Holum also had 2 walks and a pair of stolen bases.

EL CAPITAN 2, SANTANA 1 - In a battle of undefeated teams, El Capitan rode
the pitching of COURTNEY BELL to Tuesday's (Mar. 25) Grossmont North League
opening victory. Bell stormed back after allowing an early run, settling down
and sending down 10 consecutive batters as El Capitan won its 4th straight
game while the Sultans had their 7-game winning streak snapped.

The Sultans scored in the second inning on an RBI double by VANESSA GOA,
scoring TAYLOR KELLY from second base.

"I guess that hit got me to focus more," said Bell, who finished with a
four-hitter. "I didn't let it affect me, because we needed to get this league
win under our belts."

El Capitan immediately answered in the third to gain the lead. Designated
player ALISSA UNDEN stroked a run-scoring single to tie the game, then first
baseman HEATHER LOCHER followed by registering what turned out to be the
game-winning RBI by booming a double to the right-field fence.

"The ball went way over her head," noted Locher. "It was a good pitch and I
just took it (to right)."

Santana placed the potential tying run in scoring position in the 7th, but
Bell got out of the jam with a pair of easy groundouts to give the Vaqueros a
share of the early league lead with Grossmont.

El Capitan returns to action Wednesday, Mar. 26 with a game not on the team's
original schedule, hosting a traveling high school team from Oregon in a 3:30
p.m. start.

GROSSMONT 7, EL CAJON VALLEY 2 - LIQUEA BLACKMON went 3-for-4 with an RBI
and MONIQUE GONZALEZ smacked a 2-run single as host Grossmont opened the
Grossmont North League season Tuesday (Mar. 25) with victory over the
visiting Braves.

Grossmont (6-3, 1-0) scored what proved to be the winning markers in the
second inning. JEN PARKS started it with a two-out single to center. KELLYE
ZOLLERS singled to left, and JEN OSBORNE singled to score Parks. A wild pitch
moved Zollers and Osborne up a notch, then Gonzalez supplied her key single
up the middle, scoring both Zollers and Osborne for a 3-1 lead.

ALEX SOBEL turned in a complete game pitching effort, spinning a 5-hitter
while striking out 9.

"We were a lot more aggressive on offense today, scoring seven and giving our
pitcher a nice cushion to work with," Grossmont coach JERRY LERUD said. "The
hits were spread out among six of our team members, and our defense continues
to play sound with the glove. It was good start to league."

Converted swimmer JULIE NESTLEBUSH and NICOLE COPE had 2 hits apiece for El
Cajon Valley.

El Cajon Valley appears to be a lot stronger than in past years, due to the
leadership of head coach KATRINA THORNTON.

SCRIPPS RANCH 1, WEST HILLS 0 - Wolf Pack senior NATASHA CHOUINARD limited
the host Falcons to one hit over 7 1/3 innings Tuesday (Mar. 25), but it
wasn't good enough as Scripps Ranch eventually won the non-league game in the
8th inning.

Carla Nova singled home Ashley Glosz with the only run in the game.

Chouinard and Co. missed scoring chances in the 1st and 7th innings.
Chouinard doubled and eventually reached 3rd base in the opening frame, but
was stranded there with a teammate at second base.

A pair of walks and a bunt placed West Hills runners at 2nd and 3rd base in
the 7th inning, but again the Pack failed to supply the knockout blow.

MARKIE VARELA produced West Hills' second hit with a single in the top of the
8th inning.

Matadors' Beasley makes it look easy against Mariners

EastCountySports.com staff report

SPRING VALLEY - Senior AMANDA BEASLEY collected 3 hits and came on in relief
to pitch four shutout innings to gain the victory, lifting the Mount Miguel
Matadors to an easy 12-0 trouncing of the visiting Mar Vista Mariners on
Monday (Mar. 24).

Beasley gained two of her hits in the first inning, when Mount Miguel sent 13
batters to the plate en route to an 8-run outburst. The honors student (4.36
GPA) moved from shortstop after three innings, combining with starter BREANNA
FELIX for a 2-hitter. Each pitcher allowed just one hit, moving the Matadors
record to 4-2.

"If we keep our heads together, this team can win," said Beasley. "We did a
good job with the bats, so we should keep doing well."

The big rally started when MEGAN MITCHELL jumped on a 3-2 pitch, sending it
to the right-field fence for a leadoff triple. Beasley followed with an RBI
single to center. In the frame, SAMANTHA BIGGERS clouted a two-run single,
eventually finishing 2-for-2 with three RBI.

BRITTANY PLANDOR scored four times although never officially recording a time
at-bat, walking three times and getting hit by a pitch.

Mitchell also registered two hits and scored twice, while her sister, catcher
JADE SHIPP, aided the cause on defense by throwing out a runner attempting to
steal second base, as Mar Vista (3-4) dropped its fourth consecutive outing.

GROSSMONT 4, SAN MARCOS 1 - KELLYE ZOLLERS went 2-for-3 to lead the host
Foothillers (5-3) to Monday (Mar. 24) Falcon-Fiesta Tournament victory over
the Knights.

Grossmont erased a 1-0 deficit with a 3-run 2nd inning. The Hillers loaded
the bases on a lead-off walk to TARYIN CASILLAS, a base hit by ASHLEY
LOVELADY and an infield hit by TIFFANY GARCIA. Casillas scored on a passed
ball, and then Zellers doubled to left scoring Lovelady and Garcia.

Grossmont added an insurance run in the 4th inning with two outs. Zollers
singled to left then stole second and scored on a single to center by MONIQUE
GONZALEZ.

LA COSTA CANYON 2, MONTE VISTA 1 - The visiting Monarchs (4-4-1) played
superb defense, including a run-saving by throw by newcomer ROSLYN BURNS, who
cut down a La Costa Canyon runner on a throw from left field in the 6th
inning of Monday's (Mar. 24) Falcon-Fiesta Tournament game in Carlsbad.

"We just brought Roslyn up from JV and she made a great throw," Monte Vista
coach SIG CHABROWSKI said. "(Pitcher SARAH) CASTILLO was waiting there for
the runner at the plate like a linebacker. Burns' throw beat the runner by
10-to-12 feet."

Monte Vista scored its only run in the 6th inning on BROOKE FOGWELL's
groundout with the bases loaded.

The Monarchs left the bases-loaded in the 3rd inning before finally breaking
through for a run in the 6th. LYNDSAY CALHOUN and Fogwell singled and
advanced into scoring position on SIREENAH CRUSE's bunt. Calhoun scored on
Castillo's groundout, but the Monarchs left the tying run at 3rd base.

Monte Vista hosts Christian on Friday (March 28) at 3:30 p.m.

Norsemen duel Dodd, No. 1 Centurions to scoreless tie

EastCountySports.com staff report

EL CAJON - San Diego County's so-called unbeatable team could not beat
Valhalla's Norsemen in Saturday's (Mar. 22) Falcon-Fiesta Tournament game.
Granted, the game ended in a scoreless deadlock, but that had to be some sort
of confidence builder for coach DOUG HARTUNG's underdog Norsemen when No.
1-ranked University City could not cross home plate at Valhalla.

LACEY WILSON pitched a gutsy game for the Norsemen (2-2-1), limiting the
Centurions to 3 hits while striking out 7. She worked out of a bases loaded
jam in the 2nd, striking out the # 9 hitter on a rise ball.

University City's Lisa Dodd, held Valhalla to 3 hits while striking out 9.

Valhalla's best chance to score came in the 4th. WHITNEY HOLUM - who had a
single and 2 walks - started the inning with a leadoff walk. With one out,
she was called out on a bang-bang play attempting to steal second base.
SAVANNAH BROWN then hit a changeup over the right-fielder's head for what
would have been a game-winning double (had Holum been safe).

JAMIE McNALLY had the other single for Valhalla.

In the top of the 6th, UC's Liena Alston hit a double down the left field
line. Brittany Haskell followed with a sharp single up the middle. Alston
tried to score but was out at home on a perfect throw by Norsemen center
fielder LISA WOODEND to Brown.

EL CAPITAN 5, HILLTOP 4 - El Capitan received one of the top seeds for next
week's single-elimination, knock-out phase of the Hilltop Tournament after
posting a pair of pool play victories on Saturday (Mar. 22).

The Vaqueros first nipped the tournament host Lancers, 5-4, then whipped
Point Loma, 6-1, to move their record to 3-0 in the 12-team event.

In the opener, MALLORY PALMER slugged a three-run homer to left-centerfield,
lifting El Cap to a 3-1 lead in the 3rd. Palmer also scored an insurance run
in the top of the 7th to push the margin to 5-3, as Hilltop also scored in
the 7th.

However, winning pitcher COURTNEY BELL was able to get out of the jam,
stranding runners in scoring position.

EL CAPITAN 6, PT. LOMA 1 - HEATHER LOCHER sparked a 3-run rally in the 4th
inning with a leadoff homer. ANDREA MARX added two hits, including an RBI
double in the 3rd for the Vaqueros.

PATRICK HENRY 4, GRANITE HILLS 1 - The Eagles managed just a single, unearned
run when CODY WIDDES scored in the second, as Patrick Henry pitchers Melissa
DeMarco and Stephanie Grimes combined on the five-hitter.

Danielle Bryan smacked a solo homer in the second for Henry.

GRANITE HILLS 9, CORONADO 0 - Junior varsity call-up LACY TONER continues to
climb the Eagles' pitching ladder in a hurry. Toner was bold as she pitched a
5-inning shutout of the Islanders. She also pitched the final two frames
against Henry, yielding one unearned run earlier in the week.

Toner limited Coronado to 4 hits and struck out 4, registering her second
varsity victory in three days.

"I knew last night (Friday, Mar. 21) that I might need to pitch," said Toner,
who helped the San Diego Wildcats capture the Triple Crown Softball U14
national title in Steamboat Springs, Colo., last summer. "Coronado couldn't
hit any outside pitches, and that's where I like to throw - at least, this
game it was."

ALISON TINO belted a solo homer in the third inning to stake the Eagles to a
4-0 lead, after her team scored three times in the first. Her late-inning
replacement, STEFANY LOZOYA, came in to hit a pair of triples to sink the
Islanders (2-4).

JESSIE PRADA added three hits and an RBI for Granite Hills, which improved to
5-3-2 overall.

Owens helps with pitching, offense in Christian win over Helix

EastCountySports.com staff report

EL CAJON - MELISSA OWENS was willing to go as long as it took to corral a
victory for the Christian Patriots. In this case, going the distance
encompassed 8 innings as the Patriots edged visiting Helix 2-1 in Friday's
(Mar. 21) non-league game.

The sophomore right-hander limited Helix to 6 hits and struck out 10, while
walking only one as the Patriots pushed their record to 6-1. Five of those
pitching wins belong to Owens.

"Melissa had another good game for us today," Christian coach ROMA DAWSON
said.

Owens was involved in both of Christian's scoring innings. She walked and
eventually scored on LAUREN OLDENBURG's single to tie the game 1-1 in the
second inning.

In the 8th inning, Owens ignited the winning rally with an infield single.
NATALIE BREEDEN put down a bunt and the Helix pitcher overthrew first base,
putting Patriots at 2nd and 3rd base with nobody out. A wild pitch allowed
Owens to carry across the winning marker.

Helix took the early lead in the top of the 2nd inning. SIPAU LEE-NOA tripled
and scored on CHRISTINE HERNANDEZ's single. Lee-Noa accounted for half of
Helix's 6 hits, while Hernandez was 2-for-2. DANIELLE GLENN was 2-for-3 for
Helix (3-3).

The Highlanders' defense rose to the occasion in the 4th inning with the
scored tied. With runners at second and third and two out, ASHLEY PATTERSON
lined a shot off the glove of Helix pitcher SARAH ALBERTS. The ball
ricocheted to the left side where shortstop DANIELLE GLENN made a diving
catch for the third out.

"Both teams pitched well," Helix coach MICHELLE HOERSCH said. "We had scoring
opportunities but left runners on and weren't able to bring them in."

LA COSTA CANYON 1, GROSSMONT 0 - It took the visiting Foothillers 90 minutes
to travel through traffic up Interstate 5 to reach La Costa Canyon High -
about one minute prior to game time. The host Mavericks were gracious enough
to allow the Foothillers to do a minimum of warmups before the Falcon-Fiesta
Tournament tilt began.

It was a frustrating outing for the Foothillers (4-3), who stranded runners
at first and second in the 2nd inning, and left the bases loaded in the 3rd.

LCC (4-1-1) spiked Grossmont with the decisive run in the bottom of the 7th
inning. The Mavericks parlayed a single, stolen base and an error into the
walk-off marker.

Monarchs score two in seventh for one-run win over Scripps

EastCountySports.com staff report

SPRING VALLEY - The Monte Vista Monarchs did all of their scoring in the
bottom of the 7th inning Thursday (Mar. 20) to pull out a 2-1 victory over
the visiting Scripps Ranch Falcons in a non-league encounter.

SAVANNAH MOYES spearheaded the Monarchs' late-inning rally with a leadoff
double to center field. SIREENAH CRUSE followed by laying down a perfect
bunt. The fielding Falcons elected to make a play for Moyes at third base. It
was too late, leaving runners at the corners.

DONNALEE LEWIS lined a single to right-center field to score Moyes with the
tying run. The Scripps Ranch throw came to the plate, which aided the
Monarchs further as both runners moved up a base. MELANIE MASSEY then pushed
a bunt back to the right side of the pitcher's mound. The Falcons got the out
at first, but Cruse raced home with the winning run.

MELISSA BARRON (2-0) pitched a complete-game 6-hitter for Monte Vista
(4-3-1), while striking out 5 and walking one.

GRANITE HILLS 8, CASTLE PARK 1 - Senior shortstop ALISON TINO cleared the
bases with a 3-run triple to spark a five-run outburst in the third inning,
propelling host Granite Hills to an opening round win in Hilltop Tournament
on Thursday (Mar. 20).

Tino blasted a shot over the left-fielder's head, scoring BRITTANY WILLIAMS,
VALERIE VITALE and VANESSA MORENO, who all singled to set up the one-out
blast.

"We're picking better pitches to hit," said Tino, who helped the Eagles level
their record to 2-2-2. "And, hopefully, we're hitting the ball harder, too."

Tino finished with a pair of hits and also reached after getting hit by a
pitch, scoring twice. The Eagles also received two hits each from Williams,
Vitale, Moreno, catcher JESSICA TALMAN, and first baseman CHERYL REVERE to
back a 14-hit attack.

Granite Hills pitcher LACY TONER, who was called up from the junior varsity
for this ballgame, struck out five Trojans to earn her first varsity victory.
She scattered six hits, sending Castle Park to its second setback in as many
starts.

BONITA VISTA 10, EL CAJON VALLEY 0 - The South Bay power Barons came to town
and limited the Braves to just one hit in the teams' Hilltop Tournament
opener on Thursday (Mar. 20).

Senior pitcher Kristine Minter struck out 12 batters, yielding just a
fifth-inning single to NICOLE POPE in the fifth, as El Cajon Valley fell for
the first time in three starts.

Pats' Owens, Breeden are clutch in tight win over Foothillers

EastCountySports.com staff report

EL CAJON - Christian High sophomore MELISSA OWENS can thank senior NATALIE
BREEDEN for delivering in the clutch Wednesday (Mar. 19) as the Patriots
edged the visiting Grossmont Foothillers 2-1 in a Falcon Fiesta Tournament
game.

Breeden, a senior, ripped a line drive single down the left field line with
two outs in the 1st inning, chasing home KELLI MURRAY and KYLEEN MURRAY for a
2-0 Christian lead. Breeden's blow would be the Patriots' only hit of the
game.

Owens (4-1) was able to make it stand up, limiting the Foothillers (4-2) to 5
hits while striking out two and walking a pair.

"We played very well defensively," Christian coach ROMA DAWSON said. "That,
and we got a very opportune hit from Breeden."

Even so, the Patriots (5-1) did not go unchallenged. In the 7th inning,
Grossmont staged a two-out rally. JENNIFER OSBORNE walked. TIFFANY GARCIA
pinch ran for her and advanced into scoring position on a passed ball. KELLYE
ZOLLERS drilled a sharp ground ball through the legs of the Christian
shortstop for an error. Garcia scored on the play. But that would be as close
as Grossmont would get as Owens struck out LIQUEA BLACKMON to end the game.

Blackmon, however, accounted for two of Grossmont's 5 hits with a single and
a double.

"It was one of those days when you hit the ball and it doesn't find the open
spot," Grossmont coach JERRY LERUD said.

The Foothillers travel to La Costa Canyon on Friday (Mar. 21), while
Christian hosts Helix Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Perfect game against Escondido is no Sweat for Valhalla pitcher

EastCountySports.com staff report

ESCONDIDO - Valhalla High's STEPHANIE SWEAT turned out perfect Tuesday night
(Mar. 18). That is, the junior right-hander authored a perfect game as the
Norsemen edged Serra 1-0 in the Cougar Classic at Kit Carson Park. Sweat
(2-0) struck out only 2 batters but was in command the entire game, mixing up
her pitches and hitting her spots.

The Norsemen (2-2) also played great defense behind her. In the 1st inning,
MICHELLE BATCHELOR made a sparkling stop at third and threw out the runner
from her knees. Holum added another dazzling play in the 4th, going deep in
the hole at shortstop to snare a ground ball and throw out the leadoff hitter
for No. 7-ranked Serra (1-3).

Offensively, KIMMY HAYDEN got things going for Valhalla in the 2nd inning
with a single to right. She stole second and then scored the winning run on a
base hit to right field by SAVANNAH BROWN.

The Norsemen have outscored their first four opponents 10-3.

EASTLAKE 1, VALHALLA 0 - Sophomore pitcher LACEY WILSON was the hard luck
loser as the Titans (4-0) scored the game's only run in the 1st inning
without the aid of a hit. They parlayed a walk, sac bunt, stolen base and an
infield out into the winning marker.

The Norsemen had some chances to score but couldn't get the big hit when it
counted. WHITNEY HOLUM was walked all three plate appearances but couldn't
score. COURTNEY LUDWIG and LISA WOODEN had the only hits for Valhalla.

MONTE VISTA 5, SAN MARCOS 2 - SARAH CASTILLO (2-3) pitched a 2-hitter and
struck out 10 Tuesday (Mar. 18) as the Monarchs crowned the Knights in a
Cougar Classic finale at Kit Carson Park.

Castillo, who allowed only two unearned runs, was also 2-for-3 and scored
twice for Monte Vista (3-3-1).

The Monarchs broke a 2-2 tie with 3 runs in the 4th inning after taking the
early lead on DONNALEE LEWIS' 2-run triple in the 2nd inning.

ALYSSA PARKER and Castillo singled to get the Monarchs' winning rally
underway. LACEY HARRIS ran for Parker, and SAVANNAH MOYES singled to load the
bases. MELANIE MASSEY put the Monarchs in front with a base hit. Lewis
followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-3. LYNDSAY CALHOUN closed the
scoring with another RBI single.

MIRA MESA 4, GROSSMONT 3 - The Foothillers scrambled back from a 4-1 deficit
on JENNIFER OSBORNE's two-run single in 5th, but the 8th-ranked Mauraders
held on for the Cougar Classic victory Tuesday (Mar. 18) at Kit Carson Park.
A tournament time limit kept the Hillers from getting one final scoring
chance.

LISA GREEN started the rally when she reached on an error and ASHLEY LOVELADY
walked. Mira Mesa elected to intentionally pass Taryin Casillas to load the
bases with two outs, setting the stage for Osborne. But that's all the damage
Grossmont could do.

Grossmont wasted a golden scoring opportunity in the first inning against the
8th-ranked Marauders. LIQUEA BLACKMON belted a lead-off triple. LISA GREEN
got on by a fielder's choice and then stole second with no outs. The
Foothillers stranded the runners.

Mira Mesa scored two in the 1st inning after two outs on an RBI double by
Allison Boeckelman and a RBI single by winning pitcher Goff.

Grossmont got on the board in the 2nd inning. MONIQUE GONZALEZ drew a
lead-off walk, moved to second on TAWNIE PETERSON's sacrifice bunt and
scored on a single by KELLYE ZOLLERS.

Mira Mesa came right back for two more runs in the bottom of the 2nd, aided
greatly by Grossmont errors.

"We just dug ourselves a hole that was just a little too deep to get out of
with a one hour, 20-minute time limit," Grossmont coach JERRY LERUD. "I
really don't like time limits."

GROSSMONT 2, ESCONDIDO 1 - ASHLEY LOVELADY came up with two key hits as the
Foothillers (4-1) edged Escondido in Tuesday's (Mar. 18) Cougar Classic
contest at Kit Carson Park.

With two outs in the 1st inning, Lovelady tripled to left and scored on a
passed ball.

Grossmont broke the 1-1 deadlock in the 3rd inning. Blackmon walked, went to
second base on BRITTANY GARCIA'S fielder's choice. Both runners advanced on a
passed ball. Then Lovelady bunted a change-up for a base hit and the
game-winning RBI as Blackmon scored.

ALEX SOBEL pitched the first 5 innings to pick up her second win. DOMONIQUE
GUERRA blanked the Cougars in the 6th to earn the save.

HELIX 4, POWAY 0 - ADRIANA DeJONG broke a scoreless ballgame with an RBI
single in the 5th inning, then SIPAU LEE-NOA followed with a two-run double
to deep center, as Helix exploded for a four-run rally in Tuesday's (Mar. 18)
final round of the Cougar Classic at Kit Carson Park.

Although a quarterfinal-round game, the contest was the final action of the
24-team contest after rains washed out the schedule on Saturday and Monday
(Mar. 15 and 17) to cut short the tournament.

DeJong, the shortstop, battled back from a pair of strikeouts to collect the
game-winning hit, scoring late-inning substitute KRISTEN FROSIO, who started
the rally with a walk.

"Our bats finally woke up," said DeJong, a junior. "Instead of the team
getting sporadic hits, we got them all in a row."

Lee-Noa's blast cleared the centerfielder's head and rolled to the fence,
scoring LAUREN BRADY, who went 2-for-3, and DeJong.

DANIELLE GLENN later added a sharp single to left to cap the scoring, moments
before the park's curfew started and lights to the three diamonds began to
automatically turn off.

After JESSICA SMITH pitched four innings of shutout ball, reliever SARAH
ALBERTS got out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the 5th to gain the
victory for Helix (3-1).

VISTA 5, WEST HILLS 0 - Wolf Pack pitcher NATASHA CHOUINARD was victimized
by three Wolf Pack fielding errors and several other defensive lapses Tuesday
(Mar. 18), as Vista (4-1) collected four unearned runs to down West Hills
(2-2-1) in five innings at the Cougar Classic.

Leading 2-0, the Panthers broke the game open in the 5th on a three-run homer
to left by designated player Kylie Bassett. Meanwhile, Panthers pitcher
Amanda Martinez limited the Pack to just one hit -- a third-inning single by
catcher BRITTNEY MYTINGER.

Monarchs can't score in rain, fall to Dons

EastCountySports.com staff report

ESCONDIDO - Monte Vista's SARAH CASTILLO suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss
to USDHS in the rain during Saturday's Cougar Classic contest at Kit Carson
Park. Castillo allowed only one hit while striking out three and walking
three.

The Dons (2-1) scored the only run in the second inning.

MELISSA BARRON was 2-for-3 and BROOKE FOGWELL was 1-for-3 for Monte Vista
(2-3-1).

Wolf Pack's Chouinard homers, delivers shutout

EastCountySports.com staff report

ESCONDIDO - NATASHA CHOUINARD cracked an inside-the-park home run and pitched
a 1-hit shutout over 5 innings Thursday night (Mar. 13) as West Hills put the
squeeze on Orange Glen 9-0 in a Cougar Classic contest at Kit Carson Park.

Chouinard, who will attend Penn State University on a softball scholarship
next year, struck out 5 and walked one to even her pitching mark at 1-1.

The Wolf Pack (1-1-1) gave Chouinard an early cushion, scoring 5 runs on 6
hits in the opening frame. Eastlake transfer KATIE ROLF led off with a
single, and then raced all the way around the bases on a throwing error.
Chouinard followed with a line-drive home run over the right fielder's head.
After KASEY MYTINGER singled, AMY JOHNSON, DENISE TRIPLETT and MELISSA GUINN
all ripped RBI doubles.

In the 3rd inning, West Hills parlayed singles by Kasey Mytinger, Triplett
and ERICA TORRES into runs, for a 6-0 lead.

Rolf set the West Hills offense into motion again in the 4th with a double.
Chouinard walked and KRISTINA MATTHEWS ran for her. Johnson, Guinn and
BRITTNEY MYTINGER then followed with RBI singles to complete the scoring.

GROSSMONT 5, OCEANSIDE 0 - TARYIN CASILLAS went 3-for-4 with a double and 3
runs scored as the Foothillers (3-0) rolled over Oceanside Thursday (Mar. 13)
in a Cougar Classic contest at Kit Carson Park.

All three of Casillas' hits started Grossmont rallies. In the 2nd inning, she
singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a passed ball.
She scored on JENNIFER OSBORNE's sacrifice fly. Casillas doubled and scored
on MICHELLE MIRANDA's single to make it 2-0 in the 4th.

Grossmont produced its third run without Casillas' help in the 5th. JEN PARKS
singled, moved to third on LIQUEA BLACKMON's hit and scored on LISA GREEN's
single.

Then it was Casillas' turn again to provide a spark in the 5th frame, as she
singled, went to second on an error and raced home on TAWNIE PETERSON's
single. Peterson took second on the throw to the plate, setting up an RBI
single for Parks. Like Parks, Blackmon had 2 hits.

ALEX SOBEL was the beneficiary of Grossmont's offensive surge, as she blanked
the Patriots (0-3) on 2 hits over 5 innings. She walked 2 and struck out 5.
DOMONIQUE GUERRA served up two innings of hitless relief to complete the job.

"It was a good game as far as team effort went," Grossmont coach JERRY LERUD
said. "We just didn't play as sharp as we should have. But we got some
offense, and our pitching was good."

Helix 8, El Camino 3 - A Wildcats' error contributed to a seven-run fourth inning by the Highlanders.

Norsemen clobber Carlsbad at Cougar Classic

EastCountySports.com staff report

ESCONDIDO - The Valhalla Norsemen struck an offensive gusher Wednesday (Mar.
12) as they run-ruled Carlsbad 9-1 in five innings in the second game of the
Cougar Classic at Kit Carson Park.

UCLA-bound senior WHITNEY HOLUM led the way, going 2-for-2 with a walk and 3
runs.

KIMMY HAYDEN had a single and a triple with 2 RBI, while LISA WOODEN chipped
in with a single and a double. Freshman COURTNEY LUDWIG got her first varsity
hit - a triple down the third base line. ALLISON JOHNSON added an RBI single
in her first varsity at-bat.

STEPHANIE SWEAT picked up the pitching win. She got in a little jam in the
3rd, giving up 2 infield singles and a walk. LACEY WILSON came on in relief,
striking out Carlsbad's cleanup hitter with the bases loaded.

GROSSMONT 4, POWAY 0 - DOMONIQUE GUERRA and ALEX SOBEL combined for a 3-hit
shutout Wednesday (Mar. 12) as the Foothillers silenced the Titans in a
Cougar Classic clash at Kit Carson Park.

The Foothillers took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. JENNIFER OSBORNE
singled off the third baseman's glove to provide the initial spark. TAWNIE
PETERSON followed with a base hit and JEN PARKS ran for her. The runners
advanced on MONIQUE GONZALEZ's sacrifice. Parks scored on an error and
Peterson scored on the front end of a double steal.

Grossmont expanded its lead in the 3rd inning. After LIQUEA BLACKMON reached
on an error, TARYIN CASILLAS clubbed a two-run home run.

"This is a great way to start a tournament," Grossmont coach JERRY LERUD
said. "Our defense has a great night. (Catcher ASHLEY) LOVELADY had two
pickoffs and we played error-free defense."

RANCHO BERNARDO 1, MONTE VISTA 0 (8) - Monte Vista coach SIG CHABROWSKI
called it one of the Monarchs' best played games in recent years. That's
quite a compliment, considering the Monarchs (2-2-1) lost in Wednesday's
(Mar. 12) Cougar Classic game at Kit Carson Park in Escondido.

Monte Vista's SARAH CASTILLO (1-2) struck out 7, allowed 6 hits and one walk
in the losing effort.

The game was decided via international tiebreaker rules and Marielle Deker's
RBI single.

Rancho Bernardo pitcher Laura Determan struck out 12 and allowed only a 3rd
inning single to MELISSA BARRON.

Monarchs' Fogwell lowers boom for home run in tie

EastCountySports.com staff report

ESCONDIDO - BROOKE FOGWELL smashed a solo home run and MARTHA BISCEGLIA
bashed an RBI triple Tuesday (Mar. 11) to help the Monte Vista Monarchs earn
a 3-3 tie with Valley Center in the opening round of Cougar Classic at Kit
Carson Park.

The Monarchs collected 7 hits in the game that was called after 6 innings due
to the tournament time limit rule. Two of those safeties were generated by
freshman ALYSSA PARKER.

Monte Vista's MELISSA BARRON allowed 7 hits and 2 earned runs in six innings.
She walked one and struck out 3.

It was the fourth game in five days for the Monarchs (2-1-1), who face Rancho
Bernardo on Wednesday (Mar. 12) at 7 p.m. in round two of the Cougar Classic
at Kit Carson Park.

VISTA 1, VALHALLA 0 - The Norsemen opened the season with a tough loss in
Tuesday's (Mar. 11) first round of the Cougar Classic at Kit Carson Park.

LACEY WILSON pitched for Valhalla, giving up only 3 hits while striking out
5. The Norsemen gave up an unearned run in the first when Vista leadoff
hitter Stephanie Steel walked, reached second on an error, went to third on a
fielder's choice and ultimately scored on a wild pitch.

Valhalla had some scoring opportunities of its own, but couldn't quite cash
in against Vista pitcher Amanda Martinez.

SAVANNAH BROWN started the second with a walk, but was left stranded. WHITNEY
HOLUM was left at second base in the 3rd inning after a 2-out double. But
Valhalla's best chance came in the 6th.

LISA WOODEN started things off with a single up the middle. Holum followed
with a sharp single to right. After MICHELLE BATCHELOR laid down a perfect
sacrifice bunt to move up both runners, KIMMY HAYDEN hit a sharp line drive
to center field that was caught by Vista's Steel, holding Wooden at third.
Brown was walked, loading up the bases for Wilson. She took a tough 3-2 pitch
on the black for the third out.

Continuing in the Cougar Classic, Valhalla plays Carlsbad Wednesday night
(Mar. 12) at 7:00 at Kit Carson Park.

WEST HILLS 0, TORREY PINES 0 - Freshman MARA THORTON made a successful
varsity pitching debut for the Wolf Pack, spinning a 2-hit shutout, while
walking one and striking out 5 in Tuesday's (Mar. 11) Cougar Classic contest
against Torrey Pines.

KELLIE BRYAN and NATASHA CHOUINARD each went 2-for-3 for West Hills (0-1-1),
which faces Orange Glen on Thursday (Mar. 13) at 5 p.m. in round two of the
Cougar Classic at Kit Carson Park.

Owens took care of the tough part of the four-pronged batting bonanza first
when she tripled. Then came the double, the single and finally the home run.
She scored three runs and drove in two.

Meanwhile, ERIN RYAN was 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI in the win over
Julian.

For openers, Foothillers stop Monarchs

EastCountySports.com staff report

EL CAJON - Grossmont pitchers ALEX SOBEL and DOMENIQUE GUERRA combined to spin a 4-hitter Friday (Mar. 7), as the Foothillers opened the season with a 3-2 victory over visiting Monte Vista in a first round game of the Torrey Pines Falcon Fiesta Tournament.

Grossmont broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the 5th inning. MONIQUE GONZALEZ led off with a double and advanced to third when ANGELIQUEA' BLACKMON beat out a bunt. With runners at the corners LISA GREEN singled in Gonzalez with the winning run.

Guerra blanked the Monarchs on one hit over the final 2 2/3 innings to pick up the win.
