Miscues by Scots result in loss to Castle Park
EastCountySports.com

LA MESA - Pitching hasn't been a problem at Helix this season. Defense and offense are another matter.

The Highlanders (5-13) committed six errors to undermine the pitching of freshman TERESE DIAZ, as the visiting Trojans snapped a 7-game losing streak with a 7-2 victory over the struggling Highlanders on Wednesday (Apr.13).

Six of Castle Park's runs were unearned as Diaz spun a 5-hitter, walked 4 and struck out 11.

Helix coach JAIME KAHLER had praise for her freshman pitcher.

"Diaz did fantastic today, but our defense did not support her," Kahler said. "All five hits that she gave up came after errors by our defense."

The 3rd inning was especially tough for the Highlanders, who made 5 of their 6 errors in this frame that led to 5 runs.

Freshman ALYSSA DRONENBERG hammered a solo home run in the 2nd inning, giving the Highlanders a brief advantage. The Highlanders' second tally came across on an illegal pitch.

Senior LAURA SMITH had 2 of the Highlanders' 4 hits. HAYLEY GORHAM chipped in with a single.

Zetsch's game-winning hit gives Eagles win, confidence
EastCountySports.com

EL CAJON - In a battle of power-hitting catchers, it took a relief pitcher to finally deliver the game-winning hit when Granite Hills' CHARNEL ZETSCH boomed her second double of the game in the bottom of the 7th inning, helping the Eagles outlast visiting Scripps Ranch in Tuesday's (Apr. 12) non-league slugfest.

Zetsch's shot over the center fielder's head scored AMANDA OBNEY, who coaxed a walk before moving into scoring position on a wild pitch with two out in the 7th.

Following an expected slow start with a revamped roster, Granite Hills (6-7-1), which was expected to make major strides to contend for the Grossmont South League title in 2006 or 2007, is now on a roll. The Eagles own a tie against Bonita Vista, a Top 10 team, and now the victory over the perennial Division II power Falcons.

"We're meshing, even with four or five freshmen, and all pulling together," said Zetsch. "If it wasn't for Mandy (Obney) getting a walk, I'd never would've got to the plate. We're a good-hitting team who all take it easy at the plate."

The late rally offset a pair of Scripps Ranch comebacks, both ignited by Chelsie Tysdal. The senior, who recently signed to play collegiately for Loyola Marymount, ripped a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the 7th to tie the contest at 5-all.

Granite Hills catcher JESSIE SCHATZ ignited the Eagles to a 3-0 lead, sending a shot over the first baseman's head en route to a 2-run, inside-the-park home run in the first. Schatz, a freshman, later doubled and scored in the 3rd, courtesy of the first of three hits by Zetsch.

"I've been working on my hands with my hitting coach," noted Schatz. "So I was able to come back from 0-and-2 and get it to a full count before I got my hit."

Scripps Ranch (8-6), which saw its five-game winning streak snapped, came back to tie twice. In the 6th, the Falcons chased Eagles starting pitcher REBECCA TESAM, who had a two-hit shutout through five innings.

Tysdal then socked a double for two runs, and scored the tying run on a single to left by Alexia Datko.

Granite Hills immediately answered to reclaim the lead, when Zetsch started the 6th with her first double. She later scored on a KYLEE WILSON single, then JORDON CONWAY came home on a grounder to the right side by SAGE WOODROW for a 5-3 lead.

Conway and Schatz each collected two of the Eagles' 12 hits.

GROSSMONT 1,  HELIX 0 (8 innings):  The two teams rattled off 15 hits between them, but it took 8 innings to decide the issue in Tuesday's (Apr. 12) Grossmont Conference North/South encounter at Grossmont.

The Foothillers (6-8-1) finally broke the spell in the 8th inning.  JILL TIMMER singled to left field and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by MICHELLE MIRANDA. Timmer advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a base hit by CAMMI MOORE.

ROXY HESHMATY
pitched a complete game 6-hitter, while walking one and striking out 6.

"We played really well, error free ball today and received great pitching from Heshmaty," Grossmont coach JERRY LEDRUD said. "It was a great team effort from the first to the last pitch."

Moore, Timmer and MEGAN GREEN had two hits apiece for Grossmont.

Hard-luck SIPAU LEE-NOA of Helix was tagged with her 4th loss in seven decisions, despite scattering 9 hits and striking out 4.

"Our record (5-11) doesn't display how well or what a phenom Sipau really is," Helix coach JAIME KAHLER said. "She does such a great job of mixing her pitches and is easily one of the top pitchers in East County."

TERESE DIAZ and JULIA SOLOMON garnered two hits apiece for Helix.

The Highlanders missed a clear shot to score in the 5th inning of the scoreless deadlock. They had runners at second and third with one out when an unnamed Highlander slugged a deep play ball that should have given Helix the lead. The base-runner was called out for tagging up and leaving too soon.

"We are having a rocking season where things like that keep holding us back," Kahler said.

Highlights for Grossmont include KINDRA MYERS' unassisted double play in the 3rd inning and a second twin-killing sealed by Myers in the 4th frame. A lead-off double by JESSI HECHT provided Helix with the spark. Hecht advanced to third on a bunt by HAYLEY GORHAM.

Lee-Noa grounded out 5-3, and Hecht tried to score and was thrown out by Myers for Grossmont's second double play.

SANTANA 4,  MOUNT MIGUEL 3 (8 inn.):  Talk about a narrow escape . . . No. 2-ranked Santana scored twice in the bottom of the 7th and added another marker in the 8th to escape a major pratfall in Tuesday's (Apr. 12) Grossmont Conference North/South Tournament encounter.

The victory landed the Sultans (14-2) a berth in Thursday's (Apr.14) tournament championship game at Steele Canyon at 4 p.m.

No such records are kept, but the Sultans were flirting with futility by stranding 21 runners on base against Mount Miguel (1-14).

"Our two runs in the 7th came with 2 outs and the same thing happened in the 8th inning," said Santana assistant coach SHANNON MORENO. "We need to practice advancing our base-runners."

A major understatement.

Santana finally decided the issue when freshman MICHELLE BRAMLAGE belted a double to center field leading off the 8th inning. Two outs later TARYN PROCTOR pounded a double off the left field fence to give the Sultans the walk off win.

WEST HILLS 3,  MONTE VISTA 0:  Monte Vista coach SIG CHABROWSKI didn't know what kind of reception he'd receive when he led the Monarchs into Santee for a key Grossmont Conference North/South Tournament encounter on Tuesday (Apr.12).

Pregame and postgame it was hugs all-around for Chabrowski, who is the West Hills assistant girls basketball coach during the winter session.

"It was different going over there today. It was a tough match all the way," said Chabrowski. "I had some misgivings but I had a soft spot in my heart. Three girls from (the Wolf Pack) basketball team  -- KYLEE KRINGS, AMY JOHNSON and MARA THORNTON -- had some nice things to say before the game. After the game I exchanged hugs with each of the three players."

Bottom line is West Hills (13-3) scored 3 runs to blunt Chabrowski's return to Santee.

Thornton didn't allow an earned run and struck out a season high 12 while hoisting her personal pitching record to 6-1. She also went 2-for-3 with the bat, driving in the Pack's first run of 3-run second inning.

ROSEANNE ABEYTA threw 68 pitches for Monte Vista (10-10), but suffered from lack of offensive support.

Monte Vista's best chance to break through came in the 1st inning.  The Monarchs had bases loaded and one out in the 1st when BREANNA McMILLAN popped out to pitcher and ASHLEY MILLER was doubled off third.

VALHALLA 1,  EL CAPITAN 0: LACEY WILSON got back on the winning track as she struck out 10 and spun a 3-hit shutout in Tuesday's (Apr. 12) Grossmont Conference North-South Tournament contest as the 4th-ranked Norsemen (13-4-2) edged the Vaqueros in Lakeside.

COURTNEY LUDWIG
's two-out single scored JAMIE ZINTER in the 2nd inning with the only run of the game.

"It was a great game," Valhalla coach DOUG HARTUNG. "The pitchers were around the plate all game and the defenders were able to make all the plays."

El Capitan's best scoring bid came in the 3rd inning. ASHLEY MARX singled and advanced to second base with two outs. She was stranded there.

STEELE CANYON 14,  EL CAJON VALLEY 4: Steele Canyon clinched a berth in Thursday's (Apr.14) Grossmont Conference North/South Tournament title game by bombing the Braves.

JAYME JARVIS ripped a pair of doubles and SAMANTHA BEASLEY smoked a triple for the Cougars (10-2). DANIELLE DAVISSON and ERICKA BEASLEY divided the pitching chores for Steele Canyon.

JESSICA LASCAREZ was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI for the Braves (2-8). CORY RAINEY, CORTNI WHEELER, MEGAN HILL and GIGI KOURY accounted for the Braves other hits.

"Today we laid an egg," summarized McClain. "Yesterday (against Valhalla) was the best game we played all year. Today was the worst."

Highlights are sketchy from Steele Canyon as all information was provided by El Cajon Valley coach MIKE McCLAIN.

CHRISTIAN 4,  CHULA VISTA 0: ASHLEY PATERSON's two-run home run in the 3rd inning was all the firepower the visiting Patriots needed Tuesday (Apr.12) as MELISSA OWENS racked up a season high 18 strikeouts en route to her 9th win in 11 decisions.

This was a demonstrative effort by Owens, as she limited the Spartans to 2 hits.

"The girls did a good job today," Christian coach ROMA DAWSON said. "We hit the ball well and Melissa had an outstanding game."

Davisson's home run registers on Richter scale for win
EastCountySports.com

JAMUL - Rocked by an earthquake in the wee hours following Monday's (Apr. 11) Grossmont North/South Tournament contest that gave host Steele Canyon a reversal of fortune, the Cougars grabbed the inside track to a championship berth when DANIELLE DAVISSON smacked a tie-breaking home run in the 6th inning, lifting the Cougars past visiting Grossmont, 2-1.

Davisson lined the ball inside the bag at third base, as the ball rolled toward the Great Wall of Cougar Canyon in deep left field, moving Steele Canyon (9-2) just one round-robin game win away from a potential title game pairing with Santana.

A week ago, a Davisson error took a pitching victory away from teammate SAMANTHA BEASLEY. Then a base-running mistake by Beasley in the 3rd took a pitching win from Davisson. However, bizarrely, Davisson's latest homer gave Beasley the triumph, after she entered a 1-1 game in the 5th and set down all nine Foothillers she faced.

"Yes, it's kind of ironic, but we both work real well together," said Davisson. "Samantha's an awesome player and has really helped the team after moving here."

While Davisson tossed four solid innings, the sophomore's work with the bat was even better, going a perfect 3-for-3 and scoring both Cougars runs, including the tying run in the 4th on a scratch single by CATHERINE BARRIOS moments after Grossmont had just taken a 1-0 lead.

"We played a solid game today and it was great to get the job done," noted SC head coach JULIE BOHE. "One of our individual goals was not to make an error, which is one of the things we've been working on."

Meanwhile, after Grossmont catcher MICHELLE MIRANDA scored on a wild pitch to open the scoring, the Hillers (5-8-1) gave it right back on an unearned run. Two innings later, Davisson lined a hard grounder that allowed her circled the bases. She also struck out five in her four innings of pitching, while Beasley struck out four of the nine batters she faced in the combined 4-hitter.

"We're still a young team, but Amanda or some of our better players don't take it out on one of our younger players if we make a mistake," added Davisson. "We're all meshing together, and it's a lot more fun with nine wins after we only got something like six wins all last year."

Steele Canyon needs to defeat El Cajon Valley to officially clinch a finals berth in the Grossmont Conference Tournament title bout on Friday (Apr.15).

MONTE VISTA 3,  EL CAPITAN 0:  The surprising Monarchs upended the Vaqueros to not only push their record above the .500 mark but to keep Monte Vista's chances alive for a berth in Friday's tournament championship game

"I think this team fundamentally is playing very well," said Monte Vista coach SIG CHABROWSKI. "At first, I didn't think we were ready to play. It took us a few innings to get ready."

Monte Vista's winning pitcher ROSEANNE ABEYTA threw 78 pitches as she collected her 4th win. Abeyta pitched a shutout as she garnered her third win in eight starts.

"Roseanne has a heart of gold," Chabrowski said. "We've asked a lot of her and she's coming through for us. This team is striving, working hard. We ask them to do things and they accomplish it. We can't wait until next week. We are ready to play the league games."

Monte Vista is 2-2 in the tournament and needs front runners Steele Canyon and Valhalla to stumble to allow the Monarchs to step into the limelight.

Despite the loss, El Capitan coach JOE COTA took the shutout defeat in stride.

"We came out strong, hit the ball well," Cota said. "JANELLE SHAFFER pitched real well. As a coach, it got frustrating as the game went on. You've got to keep your head up and stress the positive with the players. We hit a lot of ropes, most right at somebody. Our errors hurt us. The loss really affected the girls, but we're trying to get them to play through this."

SANTANA 4,  HELIX 1:  The No. 2-ranked Sultans had to come from behind in the late innings to avoid an upset bid by host Helix in Monday's (Apr. 11) Grossmont Conference North/South Tournament contest in La Mesa.

After Helix took a 1-0 lead on a 1st inning RBI single by TERESE  DAIZ, the Sultans bounced back with run-scoring singles by DANIELLE BALOUGH and winning pitcher KRISTEN MEDRUD to take a 2-1 edge in the 5th inning.

LAURIE LINDOW's RBI single capped a 2-run 6th inning for Santana.

SHAE BASS pitched a complete game 4-hitter to earn her 5th win in six decisions.

VALHALLA 4,  EL CAJON VALLEY 0:  ERICKA MARSH  stepped forth to spin a 4-hit shutout as the 4th-ranked Norsemen (12-4-2) bopped the Braves (2-7) in Monday's (Apr. 11) Grossmont Conference North/South Tournament contest at Valhalla.

"I'm trying to get my bench players involved, they've all contributed," said Valhalla coach DOUG HARTUNG. "They all do the job defensively."

Valhalla was hitless through the first 12 batters, until KRISTYN VESSEY doubled in the 4th inning.

"Vessey's double was the play that opened the game for us," said Hartung. "We were able to score two runs then and two more in the 5th."

Norsemen catcher KIM HAYDEN, who was 1-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI, has committed to the University of Memphis.

WEST HILLS 5,  MOUNT MIGUEL 0:  Sophomore KYLEE KRINGS pitched a 1-hit shutout and struck out 11 Monday (Apr.11) as the Wolf Pack silenced the Matadors in the Grossmont Conference Tournament.

"Pitching-wise as well as hitting, we are pretty strong," commented West Hills coach STEVE SUTTON.

Strong indeed.

Krings hoisted her season record to 3-0, while KASEY MYTINGER slugged her 5th home run and MICHELLE IAVELLI drove in 2 runs.

MELISSA HILL and and Mytinger were each 2-for-4 with 1 RBI.

Mount Miguel's only hit was a single by ASHLEY KIELEY.

BONITA VISTA 7,  GRANITE HILLS 7: The game was tied after six innings, at which time the game was called due to the time limit per Falcon-Fiesta Tournament rules of one hour and 40 minutes, unless game is tied. The Rule Book says games tied after seven innings will be decided by International Tie Breaker. But the game never made it to the 7th inning.

That was Monday (Apr. 11).

On Tuesday, (Apr. 12) the Torrey Pines coach and tournament director said the umpires goofed in their interpretation of tournament rules, so the game goes down as a 7-7 tie in 6 innings.

Granite Hills finished with home runs by CHARNEL ZETSCH and JORDON CONWAY. Zetsch went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI, making GH's record 5-7-1.

The confusion in this game started on Monday.

Bonita Vista lacrosse practice, with parent spectators, was being held in deep right field, as there is no fence around the softball field. To forestall potential problems, the umpire stated at the beginning of the game if a ball is picked up by a spectator, or if it hits a spectator, it will be called a ground rule double.

In the 3rd inning AMANDA OBNEY whacked a would-be homer into right field that went through the spectators. The base umpire made no call that the ball had made contact with anyone, however, the home plate ump ruled for a ground rule double.

A similar incident happened in the 2nd inning, when CHARNEL ZETSCH nailed a would-be triple that was called back to a double when the ball hit a spectator in lacrosse practice.

"The last two games we've bombed out 22 hits," said Granite Hills assistant coach MARK OBNEY. "And we're starting four and sometimes five freshmen. We were just bombing the ball today. Bonita Vista was down 7-2 at one point in the game and battled back. I have to hand it to them."

No. 9 Henry quiets Hillers; Eagles pick up pair of wins
EastCountySports.com

SAN DIEGO - The Grossmont Foothillers should have found something better to do with their Saturday (Apr. 9) afternoon than trekking to Patrick Henry.

Donna Kerr carved out a 1-hitter and struck out 16 as the No. 9-ranked Patriots punched out the listless Foothillers 4-0 in a non-league game.

"We ran into a buzz saw," said Hillers coach JERRY LERUD.

MONIQUE GONZALEZ got the Foothillers' only hit, in the 3rd inning. She and ANDREA NEDDEN each stole a base.

GRANITE HILLS 14, CHULA VISTA 4: Junior CHARNEL ZETSCH pitched a complete game victory for the Eagles in Saturday's (Apr.9) first game of a scheduled doubleheader.

JESSICA SCHATZ went 2 for 3 with two RBI for the Eagles. NICOLE RIVERA was 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and SAGE WOODROW banged out a pair of hits for rebounding Granite Hills.

GRANITE HILLS 7, CHULA VISTA 0 (forfeit):
The Eagles earned an early 1-0 lead but the game was called after three innings when a Chula Vista player suffered an injury and left the Spartans short of players. The game did not continue, thus Granite Hills was awarded the victory.

Patriots are a peach as Plum has three RBI in shutout win
EastCountySports.com

TEMECULA -- Christian High returned to the winning track Friday (Apr. 8) by slugging out a 10-0 non-league win over host Linfield Christian. Freshman AMANDA PLUM drove in 3 runs with a double and a single, while ace MELISSA OWENS pitched a 2-hitter to roll her record to 8-2.

STEPHANY MELENDEZ stroked a pair of RBI singles for the Patriots (8-5), while ASHLEY PATERSON and JILLIAN ZAVADIL were each 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored.

All nine Christian starters contributed to a 14-hit attack.

Owens struck out 9, raising her season total to 102 in 52 innings.

SCRIPPS RANCH 2,  VALHALLA 1: The No 1-ranked Valhalla Norsemen would probably like to erase this week from the books.

Oh sure, things started out OK, as they blanked West Hills on Monday (Apr. 4). However, the Norsemen's next three games resulted in a tie and two losses, including a 2-1 setback at the hands of visiting Scripps Ranch on Friday (Apr. 8).

"We left too many runners; that was frustrating," said Valhalla coach DOUG HARTUNG. "It was just one of those days. We hit the ball hard but right at people. Their steals were crucial. They played a big part of the game."

"Both of Scripps Ranch runs were set up by steals," Hartung pointed out.

But none of the three runs was earned, including the two allowed by Valhalla starting and losing pitcher ERICKA MARSH. A junior right-hander, Marsh gave up just 5 hits and struck out 8.

LACEY WILSON accounted for half of Valhalla's hits with a pair of singles.

Sultans need extra innings to outlast Cougars
EastCountySports.com

SANTEE - With a wealth of young talent, Steele Canyon may be the rising softball program in East County, yet the lack of experience still leaves the Cougars a few rungs back on the achievement ladder after Santana rallied late in Thursday's (Apr. 7) tightly-played Grossmont Conference North-South Tournament contest.

Following four innings of shoddy defense, the third-ranked Sultans (12-2) regrouped to tie the ballgame in the bottom of the 7th, eventually scoring in the 10th to post the winning marker resulting in a 2-1 victory.

Both Santana runs were unearned, including the deciding tally by KATIE THOMAS, who opened the inning with a double over the left-fielder's head, eventually scoring when the ball was thrown away into right field on a KELSEY McILONIE sacrifice bunt.

"We're a good team but had a bad day," stated Sultans pitcher KRISTEN MEDRUD, who scattered 9 hits to gain her 7th win in eight decisions. "We just need to pull it together sometimes, which we were able to do today."

Santana left pieces all over the diamond early on including twice failing to cover first base on grounders to the infield, the first leading to the Cougars' lone run in the second. CHRISTINE BARRIOS hit a tapper toward first, but reached on the Sultans' communication failure to place two runners on base.

Steele Canyon shortstop LISA MONGELLI followed with a solid single to center to score ALEXANDRA YOUNG, although Mongelli was thrown out at second while trying to take an extra base.

The Cougars later loaded the bases in the 3rd with no outs, but Medrud escaped to keep her team in the ballgame.

"That was fun," said Medrud, a junior right-hander who retired the final 10 Cougars batters, not allowing a runner past first base over the final seven frames. "I've always had to pull myself out of jams, but my team backed me up that time."

Although Medrud got out unscathed with one of her six strikeouts and a pair of ground balls, Young's run looked to be all Cougars pitcher SAMANTHA BEASLEY would need, carrying a 3-hit shutout into the 7th.

However, a split-second choice in the outfield proved decisive. After an error, a single and a stolen base placed two Sultans in scoring position, JEN KRISMER lifted a deep fly ball into foul territory down the left field line.

Late-inning defensive replacement ERIKA BEASLEY had only a moment to determine if she could throw out SHAE BASS at the plate from 60 yards away or intentionally allow the ball to fall foul. Beasley elected to make the catch. However, Bass raced home and easily beat the throw, sending the contest to extra innings.

Samantha Beasley was the hard-luck loser, despite allowing just six hits, striking out three without issuing a walk. The right-hander, who bats as a lefty, also added a pair of singles, while teammate AMANDA JONES also stroked a pair of base hits.

"We're improving and working on our errors, which have killed us all over the place," said the Cougars pitcher. "Everyone looks at us as a joke because of our record last year, but we've done pretty good right now."

Medrud and Thomas each went 2-for-4 for the Sultans, including a double.

VALHALLA 3,  GROSSMONT 3:
It wasn't a victory for the win column, but it  was definitely a morale booster for the host Foothillers Thursday (Apr. 7) as they fought top-ranked Valhalla to a Grossmont North/South League Tournament deadlock that was halted by darkness after 11 innings.

"It was great, back-and-forth all the way," recalled Grossmont coach JERRY LERUD. "This was a game of 9 extra base hits, 7 doubles and 2 triples between the two teams."

MICHELLE MIRANDA
sparked Grossmont with 4 hits and 3 RBI in five at-bats. It was Miranda's triple to right-center that scored JILL TIMMER with the tying run in the bottom of the 6th inning.

Timmer was 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and 2 runs.

"Obviously, it was the Timmer and Miranda show," Lerud said.

The Grossmont pitching committee of ROXY HESHMATY, DOMONIQUE GUERRA and CAMMI MOORE held the Norsemen to 2 earned runs and 9 hits. The return of Guerra, who had her season impact delayed by a bout with tendinitis, twirled 2 shutout innings. Moore snuffed the Norsemen on 2 hits over the final 4 frames.

LACEY WILSON's RBI double gave Valhalla a 1-0 edge in the 2nd inning. Miranda's base hit scored Timmer in the bottom of the inning to even the count at 1-1.

Miranda's RBI double gave Grossmont a 2-1 edge in the 4th.

An RBI double by Valhalla freshman JODIE SCHMEHR knotted the count at 2-2 in the 5th. But the Norsemen (11-3-2) weren't through. An error in the outfield allowed Schmehr to score the go-ahead run.

"In the 10th inning Valhalla had a runner at third with one out, and couldn't score," Lerud noted.

Valhalla's Wilson pitched 8 innings of stout relief, scattering 7 hits and allowing just one run. She struck out 10 and walked one and received no decision for her effort.

"This was our best overall team effort this season," Lerud said. "Everybody contributed today."

WEST HILLS 10,  HELIX 0:  West Hills junior pitcher MARA THORNTON fired a 3-hit shutout as the Wolf Pack ran roughshod over the visiting Highlanders in Thursday's (Apr. 7) Grossmont North/South Tournament contest.

The Wolf Pack (11-3) scored all 10 runs in the 3rd inning of a game that was halted after 4 1/2 frames.

KASEY MYTINGER, MICHELLE IAVELLI and BRITTANY SWANSON banged RBI singles for the Pack. After JAYLEEN BUSH walked to force in a run, BRIANNA LA CHUSA doubled in 2 more runs. A pair of errors ran the West Hills scoring count to a perfect 10.

Although West Hills (11-3) wanted to continue the game to completion, Helix coach JAMIE KAHLER decided her Highlanders (5-9) could not gain any value by continuing  the contest to the end.

"She told me they were done, that they were leaving," West Hills coach STEVE SUTTON said of the Highlanders. "I told their coach I put in all of my reserves and that we would not steal bases, but she still took her team off the field and left."

MONTE VISTA 7, EL CAJON VALLEY 0: Monte Vista's BREANNA McMILLAN survived seven walks to spin a 3-hit shutout in Thursday's (Apr. 7) Grossmont Conference North/South Tournament game.

"The girls were much more relaxed today," said Monte Vista coach SIG CHABROWSKI. "They were complaining yesterday that it was hot so they decided to wear shorts to play the game today because they expected it to be hot again. But it was cloudy, cold and windy out there."

"This win was a positive note for us because we already had a tough week of losses (to Santana, Grossmont and Serra). I'm proud that we're batting .500 now," Chabrowski added.

ALYSSA PARKER was 3-for-4 with an RBI while SDSU bound ASHLEY DAIGLE laced a pair of doubles to drive in 2 runs for the Monarchs.

"Parker is a tough kid, really scrambles," Chambowski said.

Monte Vista's ROSEANNE ABEYTA was also 3-for-4 with a run.

"Abeyta is a multitasker, plays wherever we ask her, pitcher or first base, and doesn't complain," Chabowski said.

"SAVANNAH MOYES is our field leader, very boisterous on the field. She has her own cheer squad."

JESSICA COPE, CORTNI WHEELER
and AMANDA SWANN had one hit apiece for El Cajon Valley.

EL CAPITAN 7,  MOUNT MIGUEL 6: The Vaqueros rallied from a 3-0 deficit to dump the visiting Matadors in Thursday's (Apr. 7) Grossmont North/South Tournament.

"We came from behind and won 7-6," said a pleased JOE COTA of his El Capitan Vaquero squad. "It was kinda they won the 1st inning and we won the 2nd."

"Freshman HEATHER BREWER made a big league catch at second base, a dive to her left and threw from her knees for the out. The freshmen came through today."

"Mount Miguel has some girls who can hit the ball. Their #22, the shortstop (ROSIE GONZALES) is a real good hitter. (ASHLEY) KIELEY got a hit on us at the end and so did (ASHLEY) BEASLEY.

"I asked the girls to have a team meeting among themselves and decide what we need to do to get this thing going. They had a good meeting."

In the 5th inning Cota made a change in his lineup.

"The starters weren't getting anything going offensively," he said. So I put in three freshmen and they came through for us. We started freshman pitcher JULIANNA DUNCAN today, and the freshmen kids were making stuff happen. It was a feel good type game."

"Our sophomore catcher AMANDA COMBS plays field hockey rather than travel ball, but has gotten so much better. She's one of those kids who hustles every play and just has a great attitude."

Poway edges Patriots in pitcher's duel
EastCountySports.com

POWAY - Not even pitching superstar MELISSA OWENS can win games by herself. Although the ever-reliable Owens gave up just 3 hits and walked 5, she did not give up an earned run. Nevertheless, Owens was pinned with her second loss in nine decisions as host Poway claimed a 2-0 Falcon Fiesta Tournament victory on Wednesday (Apr.6).

"Owens had some key strikeouts," said Christian coach ROMA DAWSON. "When we face experienced pitching it stretches us. Some of the kids are still working on good at-bats in terms of being able to hit pitching not in the strike zones. Hopefully, we can get over the hump soon."

Owens had 3 of Christian's 4 hits in the loss.

"We had some scoring opportunities, our base running was a little faulty," Dawson added. "We didn't get hits at key times, didn't quite get the job done offensively. Poway made the plays on defense."

SERRA 2,  MONTE VISTA 1: The Monarchs junior ALYSSA PARKER was 2-for-3 in Wednesday's (Apr. 6) Falcon Fiesta Tournament setback at Serra.

"Passed balls and errors killed us," said Monte Vista coach SIG CHABROWSKI. "Serra outplayed us."

Monte Vista had the tying runs on base in the 6th and 7th, but couldn't get the key hit to upend the Conquistadors (2-9-1).

The Monarchs wasted the solid pitching of ROSEANNE ABEYTA, who hurled a 4-hitter and allowed only one earned run.

Krismer delivers game-winning home run for Santana over top-ranked Valhalla
EastCountySports.com

EL CAJON -- JENNIFER KRISMER smacked a pinch-hit two-run home run to give Santana a key 3-1 victory over host Valhalla in Tuesday's (Apr. 5) Grossmont North/South League Tournament showdown of Top 10 teams.

It was an impact victory for Santana (11-2), which hopes to land the top seed in the San Diego CIF Division III playoffs next month. The Sultans, who rode the 6-hit, complete-game pitching of SHAE BASS (5-1) to the victory over the top-ranked Norsemen, are the SDCIF Division III defending champions. Valhalla (11-3-1) won the SDCIF Division II crown last year and stands in a primary contender position for the Division III ring this spring.

Krismer's two-out blast scored freshman KELSEY McILONIE, who began the winning frame with a leadoff single in the 5th inning and the score knotted at 1-1.

"It was a natural pinch-hitting situation in terms of match-ups," Santana coach JOHN BOBOF said.

Valhalla's LACEY WILSON, a power pitcher who dominates most batters, was stuffing some of Santana's top sticks. That includes top gun CHEYENNE COOK, who struck out in her first two at-bats against Wilson.

Cook's frustration led to Krismer's opportunity.

"At first when I made contact (with the 3-1 pitch), I wasn't sure it had a chance," Krismer said. "Then, when I rounded first base, I saw that it made it over. It was exciting."

The victory gave Santana a split of two games against the Norsemen, who claimed a 1-0 nod via the International Tiebreaker in a tournament game last month in Las Vegas.

SHAE BASS pitched a complete-game 6-hitter for Santana.

"It's always fun to beat a team as good as Valhalla," Bass said.

Bass struck out 5 - 3 coming in the 1st inning - as she notched her 5th win in six decisions.

"My game is I usually throw on the outside half (of the plate)," Bass said. "The umpire was a little bit strict (in his strike zone), but I worked around it."

Santana capitalized on the only error of the game to take a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning, but the Norsemen tied it on KRIS VESSEY's RBI single in the 3rd inning.

McIlone's leadoff single in the 5th inning set the stage for Krismer's game-winning clout.

Valhalla pitcher LACEY WILSON, the San Diego Union-Tribune's Player of the Year in 2004, was tagged with her first loss against 10 wins. She struck out six and walked none while spinning a six-hitter.

"It came down to that one pitch," Valhalla coach DOUG HARTUNG said. "But I'm sure we will see them again."

STEELE CANYON 2,  WEST HILLS 1 (9 inn.): AMANDA JONES singled in AMY ANTIONE with the winning run in the bottom of the 9th inning Tuesday (Apr. 5) to give host Steele Canyon one of its biggest victories in the 3-year history of its softball program. The hard-fought Grossmont North/South League Tournament victory raised the Cougars season record to 8-1, while No. 5-ranked West Hills (10-3) suffered its second straight loss.

SAMANTHA BEASLEY fired a 7-hitter and did not allow an earned run as the Cougars gained the nod and the sophomore right-hander rolled her record to 5-0. Beasley struck out 10 and walked none.

"She is amazing," Steele Canyon coach JULIE BOHE said. "I love calling pitches for her. She hits her spots and everything happens the way it should. I just make sure I communicate with my pitchers so we can get the job done."

West Hills took a 1-0 edge in the 5th inning.

"We virtually stole that run," West Hills coach STEVE SUTTON said.

MELISSA HILL
singled, stole second and scored on a throwing error to put the Pack on top.

Steele Canyon tied the game in the bottom of the 7th. Antoine singled, stole second and scooted to third on Jones' sacrifice bunt with two outs.

West Hills coach STEVE SUTTON elected to intentionally walk Beasley, but JAYME JARVIS ruined that strategy as she singled to score Antoine with the tying run.

The Wolf Pack missed a major scoring opportunity in the top of the 9th inning when its first two runners reached base on errors. That budding rally wilted thereafter when the Pack's next three hitters rolled over 1-2-3.

Despite the back-to-back defeats, Sutton hasn't given up on the season.

"We faced two of the toughest pitchers in the county in consecutive games," he said. "That's a pretty tall order."

Antoine, who bats 9th in the Steele Canyon order, was 3-for-4 with 2 runs and pair of stolen bases.

"AMY ANTOINE had an awesome game," Bohe emphasized.

GROSSMONT 4,  MONTE VISTA 2: Grossmont junior pitcher ROXY HESHMATY scattered 8 hits and limited host Monte Vista to one earned run Tuesday (Apr. 5) as the Foothillers dumped the Monarchs in a Grossmont North/South Tournament encounter.

"This was a fun, a well-played game on both sides," said Foothillers coach JERRY LERUD. "We had our key hits at the right time to score our runs. And our defense made several 'star' plays to back up our pitchers.

"In the 3rd inning, MEGAN GREEN made a scooping run across the middle of the infield and threw the runner out at first. We gave her a 'star.'"

"Then in the 5th inning, ANDREA NEDDEN made two outstanding running catches in right field. We gave her a 'star' for both catches," Lerud added.

ALYSSA PARKER's 1st-inning double scored ROSALYN BURNS to give the Monarchs (8-8) a 1-0 lead.  But Monte Vista would not score again until the 6th inning after Grossmont (5-6) had built a 4-1 advantage.

ROSEANNE ABEYTA led off the Monte Vista 6th with a base hit to left field and STEPHANIE VANDREW ran for her. LYDIA VENIEGAS advanced the runner with a sacrifice bunt. A walk to ASHLEY MILLER and a bunt single by Burns loaded the bases. Parker's ground ball eluded the Grossmont shortstop to score Vandrew. But the Monarchs' comeback bid stalled after that.

Grossmont scored twice in the 3rd inning to take the lead for keeps. A walk to MEGAN GREEN followed by an RBI double by REBECCA OSBORNE tied the game at 1-1. Osborne brought in the go-ahead marker on a base hit by KINDA MYERS.

The Hillers nailed down the victory with a pair of runs in the top of the 6th inning. ALYSSA ESCALANTE drilled an RBI double and scored on a base hit by winning pitcher Heshmaty.

HELIX 5,  EL CAPITAN 0:  SIPAU LEE-NOA and ALYSSA DRONENBURG led the host Helix Highlanders to a surprisingly easy win over the El Capitan Vaqueros in Tuesday's (Apr. 5) Grossmont North/South League Tournament.

Lee-Noa limited the Vaqueros to three hits, including a triple by ASHLEY MARX.

The hub of the Highlanders' offense was Dronenburg, who teed off on El Capitan pitching for three hits including a 3-run homer that capped a 5-run fifth inning. Lee-Noa preceded Dronenburg's second homer in as many days with a 2-run double.

"Even though we didn't score until the 5th inning, we were ready to play," said Helix coach JAIME KAHLER. "We've been talking about attacking the ball. And we started doing that in the 5th inning."

El Capitan starting pitcher CELINA CRUZ blanked the Highlanders on 2 hits through the first 4 innings.

"We just kinda ran out of gas pitching-wise," El Capitan coach JOE COTA said. "I know we are going to do better up the road. We need to develop our confidence and attitude."

MOUNT MIGUEL 11,  EL CAJON VALLEY 6: In a Grossmont North/South Tournament tussle between struggling teams on Tuesday (Apr. 5), the host Matadors hammered out 11 hits to post their first win of the season.

Senior third baseman ASHLEY BEASLEY belted a double and a triple to drive in 2 runs and score a pair as Mount Miguel snapped an 11-game losing streak.

ROSIE GONZALES was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI for the Matadors, who also got two hits apiece from MEGAN MITCHELL and winning pitcher ASHLEY KIELEY.

"This was a game between two equally matched teams," said El Cajon Valley coach MIKE McCLAIN. "We got a couple of good hits finally (and scored a season high 6 runs). But we had too many errors (5). On our team of 12 we've got nine sophomores and freshmen, two juniors and one senior. Right now we're just trying to get better for next year."

Six Braves joined the hit parade against Mount Miguel with JESSICA COPE leading the way with a double, a triple and two RBI. DANIELLE PEREZ punched a 2-run single in the 4th inning for El Cajon Valley (2-5).

Valhalla wins Top 5 battle against West Hills with Wilson shutout
EastCountySports.com

SANTEE - In a battle for East County supremacy -- and maybe the entire San Diego Section, too -- Valhalla High senior LACEY WILSON spun a four-hit shutout while backed by near-flawless defense, lifting the visiting Norsemen past West Hills, 6-0, in Monday's (Apr. 4) Grossmont North/South Tournament clash.
The triumph solidified the Norsemen (11-2-1) at the top of the SDCIF rankings.  West Hills, ranked No. 5, fell to 9-2. Valhalla hosts No.3 Santana Tuesday (Apr.5) at 4 p.m.

"Last year, we went a lot of innings -- something like 14 innings -- to beat them 1-0 in the (SDCIF) quarterfinals," recalled third baseman ALLISON JOHNSON. "This time, we wanted to show who is best."

Johnson's glove proved to be the difference after the Wolf Pack, trailing 3-0, eventually brought the potential go-ahead runner to the plate in the 5th inning. Three ground balls were hit to the senior, who tossed to second for a force out. Then, after West Hills loaded the bases, Johnson went home twice to kill the threat.

"Our defense, seriously, is one of the best and we get the job done," added Johnson. "Everyone executed -- our shortstop, second baseman, everyone was solid."
Meanwhile, the bottom of the Valhalla batting order provided a jump-start to the offense. Freshman second baseman JODIE SCHMEHL, batting in the No.9 spot, registered an RBI single in the 3rd to open the scoring. She later walked twice and scored each time to turn the contest into a rout.

"DOUG (HARTUNG, the head coach) knows what he's doing and knows how to set the lineup," said Schmehl. "Everyone on this team is capable of doing well, and that's why they're here."

Valhalla placed the lead batter on base over the first three innings, finally breaking through in the 3rd when JAMIE ZINTER reached on a scratch single, was sacrificed to second by Wilson, then scored on a Schmehl basehit to center.

Schmehl later accepted a two-out walk in the 5th, scoring on a KIMMI HAYDEN double. However, West Hills kept giving away extra bases throughout the contest which led to runs, as Hayden took third on the throw home, then scored on a wild pitch.

In the 7th, Schmehl and Hayden took one-out walks, as COURTNEY LUDWIG made it 4-0 with an RBI single, then KRIS VESSEY later added a two-run single. Both batters reached second on throws to home.

Wilson (11-0) struck out five batters for the victory, as eight different Norsemen collected a hit.

HELIX 15,   EL CAJON VALLEY 2:  The Highlanders scored a season-high 15 runs as they cruised to an easy Grossmont North/South Tournament victory Monday (Apr. 4) at El Cajon Valley.

Freshman ALYSSA DRONENBURG belted a 3-run home run that dented a car in the parking lot in the 2nd inning to hike Helix's lead to 7-0.

"Dronenburg's home run was a blast," JAIME KAHLER said. "It hit a car parked by the baseball field."

The Highlanders hammered out 11 hits, including two by starting pitcher SIPAU LEE-NOA. She also scored 5 runs and drove in 2.

CHRISTINE JACOBITES limited the Braves to 2 hits and one earned run over the final 5 frames as she earned her first win in four decisions.

"One of the big conversations we had before the game was to attack from the very beginning, and we did," Kahler said.  "We had solid pitching and defense and we attacked the ball."

GROSSMONT 7,  MOUNT MIGUEL 5:  The Foothillers sprinted to a 7-1 lead after 2 innings and then coasted to Monday's (Apr. 4) opening round Grossmont North/South Tournament victory.

MONIQUE GONZALEZ drove in 3 runs with three singles to spark the Foothillers (4-6). SANDY GOMEZ was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

After Mount Miguel scored an unearned tally in the top of the 1st inning, Gomez stroked an RBI single to tie the game in the bottom of the opening frame. MONIQUE GONZALEZ and MICHELLE MIRANDA added run-scoring singles to give Grossmont a 3-1 lead after one inning.

"We had a good day at the plate, stringing our hits together in the 1st and 2nd inning," Grossmont coach JERRY LERUD said. "We play well at times and not so well at times, but all together we played as a team today. Our pitchers came through when it counted."

STEELE CANYON 4,  EL CAPITAN 0:
SAMANTHA BEASLEY pitched a 1-hit shutout and struck out 6 for the Cougars in Monday's (Apr. 4) Grossmont North/South Tournament opening game in Lakeside. She also had 2 of Steele Canyon's 7 hits.

Beasley needed just 48 pitches to deny the Vaqueros, whose only reprieve was a single by NICOLE MORELLO.

ALEXANDRA YOUNG's triple gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning.

SANTANA 11,  MONTE VISTA 1:  CHEYENNE COOK went 3-for-4 with 2 runs and one RBI, while KRISTEN MEDRUD fired a 5-inning 1-hitter in Monday's (Apr. 4) Grossmont North/South Tournament opener.

The Sultans, ranked No. 3 in the SDCIF, rapped out 13 hits as they took an 8-1 lead after 2 innings.

ALSSYA DAIGLE enabled Monte Vista to avoid the shutout with a solo home run in the 2nd inning.

Cougars hit three-straight triples, but come up short against Coronado
EastCountySports.com

CHULA VISTA:  After spending the majority of the Easter Break on R & R, the Cougars of Steele Canyon came up short in Saturday's (Apr. 2) quarterfinals of the Montgomery Tournament against Coronado. Despite pounding out 13 hits, the Cougars fell to the Islanders 7-5 for their first loss in seven starts.

"We have got a hitting team, that's for sure," said Steele Canyon coach JULIE BOHE. "We just have too many errors. They killed us today."

Freshman JAYME JARVIS was a double short of hitting for The Cycle as she slugged her third home run of the season, a triple and a single while driving in 2 runs and scoring twice.

The Cougars rallied from a 5-3 deficit with 2 runs in the 6th inning on the strength of consecutive triples by ALEXANDRA YOUNG, AMY ANTOINE and JESSICA SUMMERS.

Antione and Young finished with 2 hits apiece.

Steele Canyon pitchers ERIKA BEASLEY and DANIELLE DAVISSON  were roughed up by the Islanders for 8 key hits and 2 runs in the final frame. The SC duo totaled 6 strikeouts.

Mytinger crushes two dingers in Wolf Pack romp
EastCountySports.com

SANTEE - For years, the softball diamond at West Hills High was considered a graveyard for power hitters. With strong winds blowing in from the west, plus an outfield fence to prevent balls hit into the gap rolling to the next ZIP code, the ballpark sometimes went several seasons before someone cleared its barriers.

No more.

Senior right-fielder KASEY MYTINGER clouted two of the Wolf Pack's three home runs Thursday (Mar. 31), as West Hills ran its record to 10-1 with a 10-1 Falcon-Fiesta Tournament pasting of visiting Serra.

KYLEE KRINGS smacked the other homer, while also pitching the first three innings in the victory.

"I can't really explain it," said Krings. "The pitchers weren't horrible but not the best we've seen. Still, we are both good hitters and got pitches we could handle."

Mytinger demonstrated how she could make the adjustment while behind 0-2 in the count. Expecting a riseball, she went to the opposite field for a 2-run homer to right in the 1st inning to overcome an early 1-0 Conquistadors lead. She later went to right-center with another two-run shot in the 3rd.

"I was 0-2 and I just hit the ball to the right because it was outside," noted Mytinger, who hopes to walk-on at San Diego State next season. "I'm doing OK. I thought I did better last season, although I did learn a lot of things over the summer."

Mytinger is doing more than OK. In addition to her two homers, which doubled her season total to four, she also added a run-scoring single to give her five RBI for the contest. She now owns a club-leading 17 RBI through 11 contests.

"We can go all the way," added Krings, a sophomore who is one of many Wolf Pack players with pitching experience. "We get along a lot better than last year's team. We're more together and play as a team rather than individually."

Mytinger is joined by third baseman AMY JOHNSON as the only seniors on the team. Johnson added to the festivities by going 3-for-3 against the pitching of the Q's (1-9-1).

"Every time it seemed I got two strikes on me before I could hit the ball last year," noted Johnson. "Now I'm a lot more relaxed out there and not always trying to hit homers. I'm just trying to make good contact."

SHARLANA BURNER
and JAYLEEN BUSH each added two hits to the Pack's total of 14 before the reserves entered after three frames and West Hills leading 9-1.

Krings allowed just two hits in her three innings, then MARA THORNTON entered to strikeout three batters in her two innings to collect the victory.

Bush highlighted a 4-run rally in the 2nd with a two-run single. Krings led off the 3rd with a homer to left for a 7-1 lead before Mytinger lifted her second shot over the fence. Bush later added an RBI double in the 4th to cap a 2-for-5, two-RBI performance.

MORSE 2,  CHRISTIAN 1: For the first time in eight decisions, Christian High pitching sensation MELISSA OWENS was tagged with a loss in Thursday's (Mar. 31) Falcon Fiesta Tournament contest at Morse.

Owens pitched a one-hitter, struck out 14 and still came up short.

The Patriots, who collected 3 hits in the loss, staged a belated comeback in the top of the 7th. STEPHANY MELENDEZ singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. AMANDA PLUM walked. Melendez eventually scored on an error, but the Tigers refused to fold.

Despite the heart-breaking loss, Owens raised her amazing strikeout total to 85 in 40 innings.

POWAY 14,  MONTE VISTA 2:  The Monarchs made a game of it for one inning, as they countered the visiting Titans' 4-run top of the 1st  inning with a pair of runs of their own in the bottom of the opening frame in Thursday's (Mar. 31) Falcon Fiesta Tournament contest in Spring Valley.

BREANNA McMILLAN accounted for 2 of Monte Vista's 6 hits in the game. ROSALYN BURNS, ALYSSA PARKER, ALYSHA DAIGLE and ROSEANNE ABEYTA delivered the Monarchs' other hits.

Owens is back and Patriots are on track in rout of Pointers
EastCountySports.com

OCEAN BEACH - Senior MELISSA OWENS of Christian High returned to active duty Wednesday (Mar. 30) and that spelled bad news for the Pt. Loma Pointers. Not only did Owens spin four shutout innings, she also went 4 for 5 and drove in 2 runs as the Patriots whipped the Pointers 10-1 in a non-league game at Robb Field.

"It was great to have Melissa back, although she's probably not 100 percent," Christian coach ROMA DAWSON said. "Every time she got on base, we brought in a pinch runner for her."

The San Diego State University-bound Owens is recovering from a hamstring pull she suffered on March 14.

JILLIAN ZAVADIL went 3 for 4 and scored 2 runs for the Patriots (7-3). ASHLEY PATERSON drilled a 3-run home run and a double, while STEPHANY MELENDEZ launched a solo home run. SARAH SEYMOUR also contributed 2 hits to Christian's15-hit onslaught.

Monarchs bring home the copper with tournament championship in Vegas
EastCountySports.com

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Monte Vista Monarchs didn't strike gold, but they did hammer out some key victories and came home as the Copper Division champions of the Fred Davison Memorial Tournament. Suffering back to back shutouts on the tournament's first day, and eventually losing three in a row, the Monarchs finished strong, scoring 34 runs in their final three games.

"Just trying to build up some momentum for our Grossmont South League (season)," said Monte Vista coach SIG CHABOWSKI after his Monarchs edged Taft Union 7-6 in nine innings in Wednesday's (Mar. 23) championship game.

LYDIA VENIEGAS' RBI single under the International Tie-breaker format snapped a 6-6 deadlock and gave the Monarchs (8-5) their third straight win.

"Somebody had a sign that read: 'Copper is a precious metal, too.' " Chabrowski said.

It certainly is as far as Monte Vista is concerned.

"I am proud of the way our girls came back, and won this thing. We were pretty down after that first day," Chabrowski said.

The Monarchs took a 4-2 lead on a three-run home run by ALYSSA PARKER in the 3rd inning. But that advantage would last only until the bottom of the same inning when the Wildcats clawed back on top 5-4.

Monte Vista tied it in the 6th and both teams scored in the 7th.

ASHLEY MILLER was 3 for 5 with 3 runs scored and 4 stolen bases for Monte Vista, while Parker finished 2 for 4 with 4 RBI.

MONTE VISTA 20,  LIBERTY (NV) 3: The Monarchs smashed 17 hits as Monte Vista destroyed their rivals

SAVANNAH MOYES was 4 for 4 with 6 RBI and ALYSHA DAIGLE was 3 for 4 with 5 RBI for the Monarchs, who won this semifinal game to advance to the championship round.

VALHALLA 1,  SANTANA 0:  Although these two Grossmont Conference rivals are in different leagues, they have nonetheless become heated San Diego CIF Division III rivals. Perhaps that is why Wednesday's (Mar. 23) Fred Davison Tournament Gold Division semifinal went into overtime.

"We thought playing Santana would probably happen," said Valhalla coach DOUG HARTUNG. "We lost to them in last year's final here (in Las Vegas) and we wanted this one."

This was the second International Tie-breaker win in a row for Valhalla, which eliminated Silverado (NV) 1-0 in the quarterfinals.

In the top of the 8th of the International Tie-breaker with Santana, the Sultans' LAURIE LINDOW started on second base. TARYN PROCTOR's sacrifice bunt advanced Lindow to third.

TAYLOR KELLY followed with a line drive that would have given Santana the lead had Valhalla third baseman ALLISON JOHNSON not been in the path. Johnson gloved Kelly's smash and doubled Lindow off third.

Valhalla started with JAMIE ZINTER at second base in the bottom of the 8th. ANDREA ALFANO was intentionally walked and ERICKA MARSH popped up a foul bunt behind the plate that eluded Santana catcher Lindow despite a diving attempt.

Marsh was hit in the foot by the next pitch to load the bases.  With the wind blowing, KIMMI HAYDEN sailed what looked to be a sacrifice fly into right field, but the ball was dropped when the glove closed too soon, and Zinter scored the winning run.

The two teams will collide again when Valhalla hosts Santana on April 5th in the Grossmont North/South Tournament.

Valhalla's LACEY WILSON ran her record to 10-0 with the 4-hit shutout that included 9 strikeouts and no walks.

Santana's SHAE BASS, who limited the Norsemen to 3 hits and struck out 9, was the hard luck loser.

BANNING 6, VALHALLA 2:  Although the Norsemen (10-2-1) failed to win the Gold Division championship on Wednesday (Mar. 23), Valhalla coach DOUG HARTUNG wasn't disappointed.

"We had two goals coming over here and we accomplished both," Hartung said. "We wanted to beat Santana, and play six games. I have no complaints."

The Norsemen were playing catch-up from the get-go, as the Pilots scored five runs in the first three innings. NATALIE MINNIS accounted for Valhalla's lone RBI.

SILVERADO 7,  EL CAPITAN 0:  The Vaqueros failed to generate much energy as the Las Vegas team made it look easy on Wednesday (Mar.23).

"Even though we didn't win, the girls had a chance to play against quality pitching and they had the satisfaction of JULIANNA DUNCAN, who got our only hit of the game in the bottom of the 6th inning, ruining her no-hitter that she had going," said El Capitan coach JOE COTA.

WESTVIEW 11,  MOUNT MIGUEL 0:
The Wolverines lived up to their 9-1 record as they mauled winless Mount Miguel in Wednesday's (Mar.23) Longhorn Tournament action.

Valhalla loses second game
EastCountySports.com

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Despite losing for only the second time in 11 starts, Valhalla, the top ranked team in the San Diego CIF Section, continues to stalk the championship trail. It was a double-edged sword for the Norsemen in Tuesday's Fred Davison Memorial Tournament as the Norsemen walloped Westwood (Ariz.) 17-0 only to lose to Las Vegas Silverado 1-0 in eight innings.

VALHALLA 17,  WESTWOOD (AZ) 0:  The Norsemen nailed three home runs in an 8-run 1st inning Tuesday (Mar. 22) as Valhalla (9-1-1) waltzed to its most lopsided victory of the season.

"Our offense was just outstanding," said Valhalla coach DOUG HARTUNG. "The normal starters really pulled for the girls who were playing."

Valhalla is ranked No. 1 in the Union Tribune poll and Santana is No. 3.  Last year Valhalla lost to Santana for the championship of the Fred Davison Memorial Tournament.

Those teams could lock horns again this year.

But first come the accolades.  ANDREA ALFANO, KIM HAYDEN, KELLEY SEITZ and ERICA MARSH smashed multiple home runs in the 1st inning as the Norsemen roared in front 8-0.

That was way more support than Valhalla pitcher ERICKA MARSH (1-1) needed in her complete-game, four-inning shutout victory.

SILVERADO 1,  VALHALLA 0 (8 inn.):  JAMIE ZINTER's RBI single in Tuesday's (Mar. 22) International Tie-breaker provided Valhalla with its latest narrow escape victory.

"This was our toughest game of the year," noted coach DOUG HARTUNG. "Silverado is ranked highly in Las Vegas. This was a great battle by two good pitchers - a typical fast-pitch softball game."

SANTANA 9,  GRANT 0:
Senior KRISTEN MEDRUD pitched three innings of 2-hit shutout ball and then flipped the ball to ASHLEY MOTTOLA who completed the shutout in Tuesday's (Mar. 22) Davison Tournament in Las Vegas.

JENNIFER KRISMER
was 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI, while TARYN  PROCTOR was 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles.

SHAE BASS and MICHELLE BRAMLAGE also chased home 2 runs apiece for Santana 9-1.

SANTANA 4,  EL CAPITAN 1:  SHAE BASS
scattered 4 hits and allowed one run as she ran her record to 3-0.

TARYN PROCTOR was 2 for 4 including a solo home run in the 5th inning. KATIE THOMAS was 4 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI for Santana (9-1).

This game marked the end of pool play and the beginning of the Gold bracket play for Santana.

EL CAPITAN 9,  CLARK (NV) 6:  ASHLEY MARX smashed a 3-run home run in Tuesday's (Mar. 22) first game of a Davison Tournament doubleheader in Las Vegas that guided the Vaqueros to the narrow victory over their Nevada hosts.

Catcher AMANDA COMBS was 4 for 4 while CELINA CRUZ was 3 for 4 with a triple. ASHLEY HART was 2 for 4 with a triple, 3 runs and one RBI.

WESTVIEW 2,  GROSSMONT 1:  Although pitching is not CAMMI MOORE's strong suit, the Grossmont High sophomore turned in a masterful performance in Tuesday's (Mar. 22) second day of the Longhorn Invitational at Rancho Buena Vista in Vista.

"This was a hard one (to lose) because we were in it the whole game," said Grossmont coach JERRY LERUD, whose Foothillers had a chance to tie in the 5th, but Moore flew out with a runner on base. We were hitting the ball well but we hit a lot of balls right at people."

Moore turned in a complete game effort, scattering 7 hits and allowing only one earned run.

"Cammi did a great job pitching," Lerud said. "We just couldn't string any hits together."

Grossmont did take the early lead with a run in the first inning. SANDY GOMEZ stroked a leadoff single and Moore walked.

MONIQUE GONZALEZ put down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third. MEGAN GREEN singled to score Gomez to break the tie.

MT. CARMEL 7,  GROSSMONT 5: The Foothillers scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning in a game constricted by the Longhorn Tournament time limit, but still came up short in a 5-inning tilt on Tuesday (Mar. 22).

MEGAN GREEN was 3 for 3 and KINDRA MYERS was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI in a losing cause for Grossmont (3-6).

VISTA 2,  HELIX 0:  The Highlanders were stung by no-hit pitching as they fell to the Panthers in a Longhorn Tournament battle on Tuesday (Nov. 22) in North County.

West Hills loses first in Hilltop final against Arenas, Barons
EastCountySports.com

CHULA VISTA -- (Modified 03-21-05) Tournament MVP Angel Arenas not only produced the game-winning hit during a three-run, 7th-inning rally, her miraculous catch to start a game-ending double play clinched the championship of the Hilltop Tournament, as her Bonita Vista Barons outlasted previously undefeated West Hills, 6-5, Saturday (Mar. 19) at Hilltop.

After stroking a two-out, two-run single in the 7th to reclaim the lead at 6-4, Arenas, the second baseman, somehow made a grab of a one-out pop fly off the bat of AMY JOHNSON. Arena, backtracking to the outfield grass, slipped on the wet surface, yet kept her presence of mind to bare-hand the ball while flat on her back.
Arenas then threw to first to double off a baserunner to clinch the tournament crown.

"Wow! I don't know how I did that," noted Arenas, who also made a diving grab of a popup for the final out in a semifinal-round victory over Santana. "I slipped and stuck my hand out as a last resort -- it didn't seem like I could do that."

The play gave Bonita Vista (6-0) consecutive victories over undefeated teams. In the semifinals, the Barons held off a late rally by Santana (5-1) for a 3-2 victory/.

West Hills trailed 2-0, but KASEY MYTINGER stroked a two-run double to tie the game in the 3rd, then an RBI single by BRIANNA LA CHUSA gave the Pack a 3-2 lead in the 4th inning.

Bonita Vista again tied the game, but West Hills again went in front in the fifth when SHARLANA BURNER scored on a wild pitch. After the Barons took the lead in the 7th, the Pack tried to rally as BRENNA SANDBERG came off the bench to stroke an RBI single to score Burner for the second time, but Arenas robbed Johnson on the next pitch.

West Hills honorees included Mytinger and pitcher MARA THORNTON, who struck out five in six innings but left with no decision.

Earlier in the day, West Hills advanced by whipping Castle Park, 7-1, in the quarterfinals, then nipped upstart Mission Hills, 3-1, in the semifinals.

JAYLEEN BUSH
stroked a two-run double in the 2nd in Game One to jumpstart the Wolf Pack against the Trojans, while BRITTANY SWANSON, MELISSA HILL and Thornton all slugged doubles.

West Hills then met a Grizzlies side which upset Mira Mesa, 4-0, in their opener. However, the Pack jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead behind a two-run homer by Mytinger in the 3rd to back a 3-hitter by Sandberg.

In the other half of the bracket, Santana eliminated the host Lancers in the quarterfinals, 7-2, as KELLY TAYLOR tagged a pair of home runs. She sent a gapper past the outfielders for a solo shot in the 1st, then boomed a three-run shot in the 6th.

An hour later, the Sultans suffered their first loss of the season to Bonita Vista in the semifinals, but not without a fight, scoring twice in the 7th to offset four Barons runs in the first.

Santana's SHAE BASS entered to pitch a pair of shutout innings in relief, then slugged an RBI single during the Sultans 7th inning rally. The Sultans eventually placed the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position, but Arenas raced behind first base to make a diving stop of a popup in foul territory to clinch the victory.

TAYLOR KELLY
and KRISTEN MEDRUD were all-tournament choices for the Sultans (7-1), while KASEY MYTINGER, MARA THORNTON and BRENNA SANDBERG represented West Hills (7-1) on the all-tournament teams.

Lerno faces minimum to halt Braves
EastCountySports.com

EL CAJON -- Senior pitcher Melissa Lerno, the daughter of Imperial Valley College softball coach Jill Lerno, keeps proving that her El Centro Southwest Eagles should be listed among the top fastpitch teams in the San Diego Section.

Lerno struck out 12 batters and faced the minimum 21 batters in spinning a 10-0 no-hitter at host El Cajon Valley. The Braves (0-3) saw three batters reach base on a walk and a pair of hit batsmen, but all three were either picked off or caught stealing.

Meanwhile, Eagles junior Amber Flores smashed the longest home run on the El Cajon Valley field since its renovation. In the 6th inning, Flores' rainbow shot cleared not only the 8-foot fence in left field, but also the 30-foot monster fence which was installed to actually keep baseballs from flying onto the softball diamond -- not the other way around.

Lerno, now 5-1, plans to pitch for Palomar College next season, rather than for her mother with the Arabs.

IMPERIAL 7, MOUNTAIN EMPIRE 3: The Majam sisters, junior Allison and freshman Kelly, turned in quality performances Friday (Mar. 18), but the Redhawks still came up short.

Allison Majam was 3 for 3 with a solo home run, a triple and 2 runs scored for Mountain Empire (4-2). Kelly Majam struck out 10 Tigers as she suffered her first loss in three decisions.

Medrud's three-run home run gives Sultans the edge over Scripps Ranch
EastCountySports.com

SANTEE - Junior KRISTEN MEDRUD fouled off 2 pitches with a full count, and then mashed a 3-run home run in the bottom of the 3rd inning Thursday (Mar. 17) as host Santana edged Scripps Ranch 4-3 to remain unbeaten after four starts this season.

Given that Santana has established itself among the San Diego CIF elite and is 4-0, the Sultans should be considered for the No. 1 ranking.

Of course, Santana's veteran coach JOHN "No Comment" BOBOF doesn't concern himself with such nonsense.

Yet, Santana could be in position for a lofty ranking.

Medrud, who pitched 4.1 innings while scattering 7 hits and allowing 3 runs, pushed her pitching mark to 3-0.

SHAE BASS blanked the Falcons on one hit and struck out 4 over the final 2.2 innings as she recorded her first save.

Santana took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning.  Medrud and KELSEY McILONIE banged back- to-back doubles to give Santana an edge that held up until Scripps Ranch scored 3 markers in the top of the 3rd inning.

STEELE CANYON 4,  LA JOLLA 3:  When SAMANTHA BEASLEY goes on strike, the Cougars are more than pleased. The sophomore right-hander, who has not walked a single batter this season, fired up 14 strikeouts in Thursday's (Mar. 17) conquest of the visiting Vikings from La Jolla.

Beasley, who notched her 3rd win without stumbling, allowed only one earned run to La Jolla. More than that, Beasley belted an RBI triple in the first inning.

But the bottom line in this one was the 7th inning when the Cougars capitalized on a three-base throwing error and DANIELLE DAVISSON's sacrifice fly to post the win.

"There hasn't been a game that DANIELLE DAVISSON hasn't gotten on base and gotten a hit. She's a crucial part of our game," said Steele Canyon coach JULIE BOHE.

JAYME JARVIS
drilled an RBI single in the 3rd inning and a solo home run in the 5th inning to help the Cougars (6-0) remain undefeated.

JESSICA SUMMERS, Beasley and Jarvis contributed 2 hits apiece to Steele Canyon's total of 7.

CLAIREMONT 5,  VALHALLA 2: Coming off a fabulous run in the Cougar Classic, the Norsemen fell on their collective faces against an underrated Clairemont crew in Thursday's (Mar. 17) non-league action in El Cajon.

The Chieftains registered 4 runs in the top of the 1st inning and held on to deal Valhalla its first loss in seven starts.

Trailing 5-0, the Norsemen mounted a comeback with 2 runs in the 3rd inning. KRISTYN
VESSEY had two hits and one RBI. Freshman AMBER REARDON was 1-for-3 with Valhalla's first RBI.

Valhalla's LACEY WILSON pitched 4 innings of shutout relief, allowing just 3 hits while striking out 5.

HILLTOP 3,  CHRISTIAN 2:   With their top player, senior MELISSA OWENS, sidelined with a hamstring injury, the Patriots (6-3) took a 2-0 lead only to watch host Hilltop come from behind for the non-league victory Thursday (Mar.17) in South Bay.

Eight of the Christian starters contributed to the Patriots' 11-hit total.

"We start off strong and we're getting hits but not at the key times," said Christian coach ROMA DAWSON.

ASHLEY PATERSON, JILLIAN ZAVADIL, and STEPHANY MELENDEZ garnered two hits apiece for Christian, which, as a team, out-hit Hilltop 11-2.

Melendez, normally the Patriots starting catcher, stepped to the rubber and pitched a complete game 2-hitter without allowing an earned run. She struck out 7 and walked only 2.

"Melendez is kinda getting into a rhythm," said Dawson. "In the tryout stage we were trying to identify backup pitchers and after a while Stephany volunteered that she had pitched some. She was very effective today."

"Melendez has been real key as catcher for us," Dawson added. "It's been quite a little transition to go through. She had an outstanding day today. Our defense played well except for a couple of innings."

Lee-Noa has first career no-no as Helix gets shutout over Hilltop
EastCountySports.com

LA MESA -- SIPAU LEE-NOA not only supplied a breather for the reeling Helix Highlanders, the senior pitcher produced some personal history.
Following a stormy opening of the season at the Cougar Classic, the Scotties received the first career no-hitter by Lee-Noa, as Helix shredded visiting Hilltop, 8-0.

"Everything is becoming pretty cohesive now," said Lee-Noa, who struck out eight Lancers in the non-league contest on Wednesday (Mar. 16) and at one stretch set down 12 consecutive batters. "I've been practicing on my changeup every day, but this was the first time in a game where I could show what it can do."

The Highlanders were missing either their hitting or their pitching in posting a 1-4 record in the season-opening tournament in Escondido. But against Hilltop, a traditional CIF playoff participant, both elements came on strong.

Included were a pair of doubles by freshman third baseman ALYSSA DRONENBURG, who went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI to power an 11-hit attack.

"I put it all together today instead of swinging too hard," noted Dronenburg. "We put too much pressure on ourselves (in the tournament), but when we execute, we can win."

The only possible blemish to Lee-Noa's no-hitter came in the 2nd when scorers discussed an infield grounder by the Lancers' Brittnee Villa, who might have beaten a throw which pulled the Helix first baseman off the bag.

"The throw definitely pulled her off," said Helix coach JAIME KAHLER. "And we got a really great effort from Sipau, who is a real team leader on the field."
Lee-Noa, who also participates in volleyball and basketball, believes fastpitch may be her best sport.

"I'd say softball, where you can go base-to-base," noted Lee-Noa on how she can demonstrate her speed. "In volleyball, you have to move, but you normally stay within a small area. Both sports are competitive."

Helix built a 3-0 lead through three innings, then received five unearned runs to turn the contest into a rout. The top hitters in the Scotties line-up -- left fielder JESSI HECHT, shortstop HAYLEY GORHAM, catcher LAURA SMITH, Lee-Noa and Dronenburg -- all drove home at least one run, but it was a sharp RBI single to left by VERONICA ARVIZU in the second which gave Helix the initial lead.

Smith added two hits, plus a safety squeeze bunt for a run in a 3-run 5th.  Hilltop fell to 2-2 overall.
MONTE VISTA 11,  HOOVER 0: These Monarchs have proven they can hit.

ROSALYN BURNS was 4 for 4 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored and ASHLEY MILLER was 2 for 4 with a home run and a triple as Monte Vista hammered Hoover Wednesday (Mar. 16) in Spring Valley.

The 5-2 Monarchs equaled the win total that took last year's squad 22 games to reach.

"It was kinda like taking batting practice out there today," Monte Vista coach SIG CHABROWSKI said. "Across the board, the kids we have this year can hit the ball. It's all about chemistry. These girls love to be out on the field."

ALYSSA PARKER gave the Monarchs a 1-0 edge with an RBI single in the first inning and then drove in 3 runs with a hit in Monte Vista's 6-run 2nd.

"We definitely have some good hitters," Chabrowski said. "Miller is an exceptional athlete with some power. Burns has tremendous speed and knows when to lay down a bunt. And Parker is so good at hitting in the clutch."

The McMILLAN sisters, BRENNA and KAITLYN, combined to throw a 1-hit shutout at the Cardinals.

WEST HILLS 4,  SCRIPPS RANCH 0:
Senior KASEY MYTINGER was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, a single and a sacrifice fly as she drove in all four runs for the undefeated Wolf Pack (6-0) in Wednesday's (Mar. 16) non-league romp over host Scripps Ranch.

Sophomore BRENNA SANDBERG pitched a 5-hit shutout, striking out 7 and walking none.

NANCY LARSEN and SHARLANA BURNER had two hits apiece for West Hills.

Mytinger is batting at a .684 clip (13 for 19) with a home run and four doubles.

STEELE CANYON 11,  KEARNY 0:  DANIELLE DAVISSON drove in 5 runs with a double, a single and a sacrifice fly Wednesday (Mar. 16) as the Cougars crushed the Komets in a non-league contest.

SAMANTHA BEASLEY whacked a double and a single, scoring 3 runs and driving in a fourth for Steele Canyon (5-0).

AMANDA JONES and ERIKA BEASLEY combined to spin a one-hitter while striking out 5.

Jones also had 2 hits and scored twice.

Bass gets the best of Mira Mesa as Sultans stake claim to battle of champions
EastCountySports.com

SANTEE -- In of itself, the single game may not matter much. However, first impressions can often make a major difference.

"It doesn't mean a whole lot," verified Santana High coach JOHN BOBOF. "What matters is the quality teams you face throughout the season."

The softball season may only be two weeks old, yet East County teams are already proving the so-called experts wrong. On Tuesday (Mar. 15), in a battle of defending SDCIF champions, the Division III Sultans received a 1-hit shutout from SHAE BASS, out-dueling Mira Mesa's Melissa Tillett in a 2-0 blanking of the Division I titlist Marauders.

The difference in this Hilltop Tournament contest came in the 3rd inning, when freshman KELSEY McILONIE boomed a two-run homer to left. The blast not only cleared the outfield fence, but carried an extra 30 feet beyond the 10-foot high barrier circling the Santana tennis courts.

"Obviously, it was a real good pitch to hit -- right down the middle," said the McIlonie, the Sultans' right-fielder. "We made very sure not to hit anything high. (Tillett) is a riseball pitcher, so we were looking for the first strike."

The patient Sultans worked the count full seven times, and with excellent results. In addition to McIlonie's homer, KRISTIN MEDRUD boomed a lead double in the 6th, while four others coaxed walks.

Meanwhile, Bass missed tossing a no-hitter by just a few inches. The lone Marauder to reach safely with a hit, was No. 9 hitter Nicole Leach, who laid down a two-out bunt in the 3rd and barely beat the throw to first base.

"That's just great pitching from Shae," added McIlonie. "We all helped each other out."

Bass struck out eight batters, including five straight before Leach's effort finally beat the defense.

Bass was backed by a pair of double plays, both started by shortstop TAYLOR KELLY, who caught a soft liner and threw to first to double-up a runner in the 1st inning, then ended the game by swiping a grounder ticketed up the middle, stepping on second and again throwing to first.

Tillett yielded just three hits, but walked nine batters, including three in the 5th, but escaped almost every Santana rally by stranding runners.

The victory keeps Santana perfect through three contests, while Mira Mesa, which is surprisingly ranked first in the county by at least one rankings service, fell to 5-3 following this loss and a poor showing at Escondido's Cougar Classic, which was captured by defending Division II champ Valhalla.

EL CAPITAN 9,  CHRISTIAN 1: The visiting Vaqueros broke up Tuesday's (Mar. 15) nail biter with 7 runs in the 7th inning to secure the non-league win. ASHLEY MARX slashed a 2-run double, STEPHANIE REL-SOLIA stroked a 2-run single and JESSICA HATTERSLEY banged a 2-run double as El Capitan (3-2) won going away.

"It's great to get a win before wehead over to Las Vegas (for the Fred Davison Memorial Tournament) next week," Vaqueros coach JOE COTA said.

JANELLE SAFFER pitched a 5-inning 3-hitter and struck out 6 before handing the ball to JULIANNA DUNCAN, who blanked the Patriots on 1 hit while fanning 2 over the final two frames.

"A lot of our defense is on the mound," Christian coach ROMA DAWSON said. "So with  MELISSA OWENS out injured (hamstring) every one has to step up. We were right in there through 5 innings, but then we ran out of gas."

CRAWFORD 5,  EL CAJON VALLEY 3: COURTNEY WHEELER had 2 of El Cajon Valley's 4 hits in Tuesday⤙s (Mar.15) non-league loss to Crawford.

VALHALLA IS SOLID GOLD IN COUGAR CLASSIC CONQUEST
EastCountySports.com

ESCONDIDO - Valhalla coach DOUG HARTUNG wasn't concerned whether his Norsemen are worthy of a No. 1 ranking in the San Diego CIF. What the veteran mentor was focused on was congratulating his young squad for sweeping through a rugged field to claim the Gold Division championship of the Escondido Cougar Classic at Kit Carson Park.

The defending SDCIF Division III champions pulled off a nifty sweep of perennial powers Rancho Bernardo 3-1 and Rancho Buena Vista 3-2 in Monday's (Mar.14) semifinals and finals, a feat that caught even Hartung by surprise.

"This is amazing," Hartung said. "I didn't expect us to do this well. Just reaching the finals was satisfying. But to take the whole thing, well, that is special."

Valhalla went through a tournament lineup of Oceanside, San Pasqual, Mt. Carmel, Patrick Henry, Rancho Bernardo and RBV without a loss.

"No question Henry, Mt. Carmel and the two teams we played tonight are of Top 10 caliber," Hartung said. "We faced some of the top pitchers in the county.

"At this point in the season I think we've done an excellent job. I like where we're at right now."

Valhalla has not scored more than 3 runs in any of its first 6 games, yet the pitching of LACEY WILSON has made the Norsemen arguably the best team in the San Diego CIF.

VALHALLA 3, RANCHO BUENA VISTA 2:  Freshman AMBER REARDON ripped a two-run single to cap a 3-run 5th-inning as the Norsemen roped the Longhorns in Monday's (Mar. 14) Gold Division championship game of the Cougar Classic.

Reardon was 2-for-3 in the title bout. KIMMI HAYDEN smacked an RBI to account for the first run in the key 5th inning.

LACEY WILSON (5-0) pitched a complete game 4-hitter, striking out 7 and walking one.

The Longhorns told North County Times reporter Scott Bair that they weren't overly concerned by their loss to Valhalla.

"It's very early in the season to get all broken up about a loss," RBV coach Dennis Snell told the NC Times.

For Valhalla, knocking out RBV ace pitcher Katie Nelson was an achievement in itself. Nelson (4-1) struck out 10, but gave up three of Valhalla's 7 hits in the fateful 5th inning.

"The fact that I was able to play all 14 of my kids and still beat one of the top teams in town is very gratifying," Hartung said.

VALHALLA 3, RANCHO BERNARDO 1: The undefeated Norsemen registered one of their many KOs in bucking the Broncos in Monday's (Mar.14) Cougar Classic semifinals at Kit Carson Park.

Freshman JODIE SCHMEHR's 2-run single gave the Norsemen a 2-1 edge in the 2nd inning. Her clutch blow followed base hits by KRISTYN VESSEY and Reardon.

Valhalla tacked on an insurance run in the 6th inning as Readon singled, and ALLISON JOHNSON followed with the first of her two key sacrifice bunts of the day to set the stage for LACEY WILSON's RBI single.

Wilson blanked the Broncos on 1-hit over the final 4 innings to help propel the Norsemen into the finals. She struck out 5 and walked one.

The Norsemen gained another plus as they earned the distinction of tagging the much heralded Melissa May with her first pitching loss of the season.

Once again freshman Amber Reardon went 2 for 3 for Valhalla, which hosts Clairemont in a non-league game on Thursday (Mar. 17) at 3:30 p.m.

WEST HILLS 16, CHRISTIAN  2: The anticipated pitching match-up between MELISSA OWENS of Christian High and West Hills' MARA THORNTON failed to materialize in a battle of undefeated teams Monday (Mar. 14), as Owens was given a day off from her pitching chores to play shortstop.

"She's just been pitching too much lately, so we thought we'd give her a rest," explained Patriots coach ROMA DAWSON of Owens, the MVP of the Catalina Tournament over the weekend.

But now, no one may face the East County strikeout artist for a few weeks.

While the Wolf Pack (5-0) beat up on second-string pitching en route to an easy Falcon Fiesta Tournament triumph, Owens came up lame with a pulled hamstring on her way to scoring with just one out remaining in Monday's contest.

Meanwhile, West Hills catcher BRITTANY SWANSON was smoking after learning her former battery mate from travel ball was not pitching. And she proved it.

Swanson tagged consecutive homers in the first two innings, including a grand slam in her first at-bat, finishing with seven RBI in a 3-for-3 performance.

"I used to catch Melissa a couple of years ago for the Santee Heat," noted Swanson. "It would've been nice to see how she'd do against us."

Instead, West Hills mounted a 13-0 advantage by the 2nd inning, aided by Swanson's shots to left field. Her slam capped a 7-run outburst in the 1st, as MICHELLE IAVELLI also added a solo homer to left. Swanson then added a 3-run bomb as the Pack scored six times in the second.

"It was just a good game," said Swanson. "All of our players did well and we didn't let up."

Iavelli batted 4-for-4, falling a triple short of a Cycle with a homer, double and a pair of singles, while KASEY MYTINGER drove home a pair of runs to power a 16-hit attack.

Thornton carried a 1-hit shutout into the 5th and final inning because of both the run rule and a tournament time limit, but the Patriots (6-1) scored twice on RBI grounders by SARAH SEYMOUR and SARAH MOSES, with the latter scoring Owens.

Thornton struck out six Patriots, but walked five, including three batters in the third yet escaped the jam with a strikeout.

MONTE VISTA 4, MAR VISTA 1:
Immediately after losing the lead on an unearned run, pitcher ROSEANNE ABEYTA bounced back with her bat, slamming an RBI single in the 5th inning to snap a 1-1 tie to start a 3-run rally to pace the host Monarchs.

Abeyta's shot to center scored AMANDA WARD, then BRIANNA McMILLAN followed with a two-run double to left-center field, scoring LYDIA VENIEGAS and ASHLEY MILLER.

McMillan and Miller both went 2-for-3 with a double to pace a 7-hit attack for Monte Vista (4-2).

Monte Vista scored in the 1st when Miller doubled to the fence, was sacrificed to third on a ROSALYN BURNS bunt, then scored on a passed ball. The Mariners (1-4) scored in a similar fashion, as a passed ball resulted in an unearned run.

Abeyta finished with three strikeouts. After allowing the unearned run, she set down the final seven Mariners in order to cap her complete-game performance.
Meanwhile, Miller made two strong plays at shortstop, twice backhanding hard hit balls in the hole to throw out runners at first base.

GROSSMONT 2,  OCEANSIDE 1:
GROSSMONT 7,  HELIX 2:

The struggling Foothillers, who are forced to go without ace pitcher DOMONIQUE GUERRA, sidelined with tendinitis, showed in Monday's (Mar.14) Cougar Classic that they aren't ready to fall apart, sweeping a consolation double-header.

Junior ROXY HESHMATY pitched 11 innings and picked up two wins as the Foothillers balanced their season ledger at 3-3.

KINDRA MYERS contributed an RBI single and RBI double to provide the victory cushion over Oceanside.

In the nightcap, MONIQUE GONZALEZ slugged a solo home run and REBECCA OSBORNE stroked a 2-run triple.

JESSIE HECHT whacked a 2-run double to give the Highlanders (2-4) a 2-1 edge in the second inning.

MEGAN GREEN was 3-for-6 with three runs scored for Grossmont in the two games.

Norsemen put the squeeze on Henry in 10
EastCountySports.com

ESCONDIDO -- The Valhalla Norsemen proved they are a legitimate Top 10 team Saturday (Mar.12) as they nipped Patrick Henry 1-0 in 10 innings at Kit Carson Park, site of the Cougar Classic.

LACEY WILSON was the thrust of the Norsemen's latest conquest, spinning a 10-inning shutout for her third win without a loss. She allowed only 4 hits, walked one and struck out 11.

The Norsemen (3-0-1) put the victory in pocket when NICOLE STANINGER laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to give Valhalla the nod.

"We pulled Nicole off the bench because we know she can bunt," said Valhalla coach DOUG HARTUNG. "We went with the plan and it worked."

ALLISON JOHNSON and AMBER REARDON accounted for Valhalla's only two hits in the game.

SANTANA 8,  CHULA VISTA 0: The Sultans continued their hitting barrage Saturday (Mar.12) as they submerged the Spartans in a Hilltop Tournament contest.

The Sultans (2-0) scored all the runs they would need in the 2nd inning when KRISTEN MEDRUD tripled and SHAE BASS doubled her home.

DANIELLE BALOUGH keyed a 3-run 3rd inning with a 2-run triple as the offensive-minded Sultans pulled away for the easy victory.

"We had a lot of strikeouts," said Santana assistant coach SHANNON MORENO. "And we had some strong, solid hits, but (Chula Vista) helped us with some errors.

CHRISTIAN 1, VILLAGE CHRISTIAN 0:  Catalina Island could not contain MELISSA OWENS and the Christian High Patriots who won the Avalon Tournament with relative ease on Saturday (Mar.12).

Owens, the tournament's MVP, pitched a 2-hit shutout and struck out 11 for her 6th win without interruption.

Owens, a senior, is 6-0 with 64 strikeouts in 30 innings. She has won all 6 of her starts and hasn't allowed an earned run.

In Saturday's championship game, Owens scored the winning run to gain the nod over Village Christian.

Owens walked, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored the game-winner on SARAH MOSES' suicide squeeze in the 6th inning.

ASHLEY PATERSON was named to the all-tournament team.

WEST HILLS 6,  MAR VISTA 0:  KAYLEE KRINGS pitched a 1-hit shutout and struck out 12 Saturday (Mar. 12) as the Wolf Pack mowed down the Mariners in a Hilltop Tournament encounter.

WEST HILLS 8,  MORSE 0: KASEY MYTINGER went 3-for-3 with a double and a 3-run home run as the Wolf Pack tamed the Tigers on Saturday (Mar.12) in the Hilltop Tournament.

AMY JOHNSON also hit a solo home run for West Hills (4-0). SHARLANA BURNER and MICHELLE IAVELLI punched out two hits apiece for the Wolf Pack victory.

EL CAPITAN 18,  OTAY RANCH 0: The Vaqueros rattled off 18 runs and 16 hits against the outmanned Mustangs in Saturday's (Mar. 12) Hilltop Tournament action. AMANDA COMBS set the pace with a pair of doubles, a triple and 8 RBI for El Capitan.

ASHLEY HART was 4 for 5 and JESSICA HATERSLEY, El Capitan's only senior, was 3 for 3.

Freshman JULIANNA DUNCAN pitched a 5-inning one hitter and struck out 4 for the Vaqueros.

CASTLE PARK 3,  EL CAPITAN 1:  The Vaqueros (2-2) lost this one on a California Tie-Breaker after seven scoreless innings of Hilltop Tournament play.

Freshman CELINA CRUZ was the hard-luck loser for El Capitan despite pitching a 3-hitter. She was 2 for 2 with one RBI at the plate.

STEELE CANYON 7,  KEARNY 1: The 8 a.m. start caused the Cougars to get off to a sluggish start in the Aztec Tournament at Montgomery.

"It took us a couple of innings to get it together," Steele Canyon coach JULIE BOHE said.

From there the Cougars pounced into high gear, scoring 7 runs in the middle two innings and then letting the pitching of DANIELLE DAVISSON take care of the rest.

Davisson pitched a one-hitter and struck out seven. The winning pitcher also hit a triple, driving in one run and scoring another.

STEELE CANYON 12,  BISHOP's 0:  JAYME JARVIS  belted a 3-run home run and ERIKA BEASLEY pitched a 2-hit shutout as the Cougars crowned the Knights in Saturday⤙s (Mar. 12) Montgomery Aztecs Tournament.

Jarvis, a freshman, was selected the Player of the Game for going 3-for-3 with the bat, scoring 3 runs and notching 4 RBI.

GROSSMONT 12, MOUNT MIGUEL: Sophomore ANDREA NEDDEN drove in 3 runs with a pair of hits and pitched 3 innings of shutout relief to turn back the Matadors in Saturday's (Mar.  12) tournament play.

KINDRA MYERS was 2-for-2 with a double and 2 RBI, while ALYSSA ESCALANTE was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI for Grossmont (1-3).

CAMMI MOORE
pitched a 2-hitter with 5 strikeouts for the win.

Norsemen get into Cougar Classic quarters
EastCountySports.com

ESCONDIDO -- After looking uncharacteristically sloppy by committing a series of errors to allow a run Friday (Mar. 11), the Valhalla Norsemen demonstrated why they are the defending SDCIF Division II titlists. And the response advanced the team to the Gold Division bracket of the Cougar Classic at Kit Carson Park.

LACEY WILSON
singled home ANDI ALFANO with the tying run, giving the Norsemen a 1-1 draw with Mt. Carmel. The game was shortened to five innings due to a tournament time limit. Despite not winning, the tie was good enough for Valhalla, giving it a 2-0-1 record to capture the pool, joining seven other teams into Saturday's (Mar. 12) quarterfinals.

The Sundevils (1-1-1), who could have taken the pool with a victory, parlayed three errors and a sacrifice bunt into a run in the 3rd inning. However, Valhalla center-fielder Alfano opened the 4th with a sharp single to left, advanced on an ALLISON JOHNSON sacrifice bunt, then tied the ballgame with a nice slide around the catcher after Wilson singled to center.

"It was pretty crazy -- not like us to make the mistakes we made," said Alfano. "But I got a chance to score when coach (DOUG HARTUNG) waved me home, then I heard him yell, 'get down,' and I was able to slide around the catcher and get my hand down. It was pretty cool."

Valhalla had two early chances to score, but on both occasions, catcher KIMMI HAYDEN was nailed at the plate. The first attempt resulted in a heavy collision with Mt. Carmel catcher Erin Floros, who took herself out of the game an inning later.

"She shouldn't have been blocking the plate," noted Hayden. "I am an aggressive baserunner and I'll try to take you out if you're standing there."

Although the rally to remain alive for the tournament championship is welcome, Hayden hopes to erase the many times the Norsemen need to rally.

"We have a tendency to fall behind, but we got it back," said the senior catcher. "We just have to make the breaks we need, because our goal is to win CIF again."
Wilson received credit for the complete game, striking out seven in five frames, but walking six in spinning a 1-hitter.

Third baseman Chelsea Bemis, the second batter of the game, collected the lone hit. She later put down a sacrifice bunt, but was safe at first on a wild throw which allowed Alyssa Schott to score an unearned run in the third.

Mt. Carmel placed runners throughout the first four frames, stranding eight, but finished strong by setting down six straight batters to close the game, including a pair of strikeouts in the fifth.

STEELE CANYON 3, CHULA VISTA 0:
STEELE CANYON 17, SAN YSIDRO 0:

The Cougars appear armed to challenge defending champion Valhalla for the Grossmont South League championship this spring.

Coach JULIE BOHE's Cougars posted their second win in as many starts Friday (Mar.11), as SAMANTHA BEASLEY pitched a 3-hitter and struck out 14.

DANIELLE DAVISSON paced the Cougars offense with a pair of singles and an RBI. AMANDA JONES also drove in a run as did pitcher Beasley.

Earlier in the season, Steele Canyon crushed San Ysidro. The Cougars clubbed 19 hits, including a home run by SAMANTHA BEASLEY. JESSICA SUMMERS and Davisson each had a triple in the season-opening rout.

The Beasley sisters, Samantha and ERIKA, combined to pitch a 5-inning no-hitter.

VISTA 6, GRANITE HILLS 2: Sophomore shortstop NICOLE RIVERA registered two of the Eagles' five hits, but the team left four runners in scoring position, giving the Panthers the chance to slowly pull away.

Rivera opened the game with a single, eventually scoring on a MANDY OBNEY grounder to third, as Rivera took off on the throw to first and sliding home under the toss back to the plate.

However, triples by Rivera in the 3rd inning and JESSICA SCHULTZ in the 4th frame resulted in both runners getting stranded. Meanwhile, the Panthers scored once over the first three innings, then collected three more in the sixth -- two unearned -- to advance to the tournament Silver Division, while Granite Hills (1-2) fell to the Bronze Division.

"This team has a lot of speed, we just have to gel together," said Rivera. "And we have a lot of players who played together as East County ASA."

East County ASA is also the home base for MIKE BERTUSSI, who took over as Granite Hills' coach just days prior to spring training camp.

The other Eagles runs came in the 7th, as Schultz scored on a sharp base hit to center by ALICE SUGITA.

Granite Hills will meet Clairemont in Saturday's (Mar.12) Bronze semifinals. In the consolation bracket, Grossmont and Mount Miguel will meet in the quarterfinals, while Helix received a bye into Monday''s semifinals.

MIRA MESA 9,  GROSSMONT 2: The Marauders scored in all four innings of the time-limit shortened Cougar Classic encounter Friday (Mar. 11) at Kit Carson Park in Escondido.

"It must be the lights, we're snake bit," lamented Grossmont coach JERRY LERUD, whose Foothillers fell to 0-3. "We seem to be multiplying our mistakes under the lights. I'm looking forward to playing in the daylight. We're hanging in there as a team. Win or lose these ladies are working hard. I keep telling them there is light at the end of the tunnel."

CHRISTIAN 8, VILLAGE CHRISTIAN 0:
MELISSA OWENS continued to mow down the opposition, spinning a 5-hitter and a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts and no walks in the Catalina Tournament Friday (Mar.11) morning.

Owens was also handy with the bat, driving in 3 runs with a double and a single.

The Patriots (4-0) peppered Village Christian pitching for 11 hits, including a 2-run home run by SARAH SEYMOUR.

JILLIAN ZAVADIL was 3-for-3 for Christian.

CHRISTIAN 12, LOS ANGELES GARFIELD 0: Christian unleashed more MELISSA OWENS in Friday afternoon's (Mar. 11) semifinal contest of the Catalina Tournament. This was a short-lived affair as Christian spent so much time battering the Bulldogs pitching that the 90-minute tournament time limit halted activity after two innings.

Owens and STEPHANY MELENDEZ pitched one hitless inning apiece. Owens added two strikeouts, giving her 53 whiffs in 23 innings to go along with a 5-0 record.

Owens also slugged a pair of doubles, driving in two runs and scoring twice herself. AMANDA PLUM was 2 for 2 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI. Melendez smacked a 2-run double and scored a run as the Patriots prepare for Saturday's (Mar. 12) championship game at 1 p.m.

SAN DIEGUITO ACADEMY 7, MONTE VISTA 1: After posting three consecutive shutouts, the Monarchs returned to reality in Friday⤙s (Mar.11) Falcon-Fiesta Tournament tussle against San Dieguito Academy.

The Mustangs scored in each of their first five turns at-bat to snap the Monte Vista string.

ASHLEY MILLER and BREANNA McMILLAN had two hits apiece for the Monarchs (3-2).

Santana scores 13 runs in first inning of season
EastCountySports.com

SANTEE -- The Santana Sultans picked up their bats where they left off last year and pounded Marian Catholic's two pitchers for 14 hits and 18 runs in Thursday's (Mar. 10) 18-0 romp over the Crusaders in the Hilltop Tournament opener. The 2004 San Diego CIF Division III champion Sultans scored 13 runs in the 1st inning and never looked back.

Five Santana hitters enjoyed multiple-hit games, led by the 3 for 4 effort of  DANIELLE BALOUGH that reaped 3 runs and 3 RBI.

KATIE THOMAS drove in 3 runs and scored twice with a pair of hits in 4 at-bats, while CHEYENNE COOK had a hand in 5 runs with a 2-for-2 effort at the dish.

KRISTEN MEDRUD
and SHAE BASS combined on a 1-hit shutout while striking out 8.

VALHALLA 3,  SAN PASQUAL 1:  ERICKA MARSH and LACEY WILSON combined on a 3-hitter in Thursday's (Mar.10) Cougar Classic confrontation at Kit Carson Park in Escondido as Valhalla rolled its record to 2-0.

KRISTYN VESSEY drove in 2 runs with a triple and a single to hype the Valhalla offense.

WEST HILLS 5,  EASTLAKE 0:   MARA THORNTON spun a complete game 2-hitter while striking out 9 Thursday (Mar. 10) as the Wolf Pack punched out Eastlake in a Hilltop Tournament contest.

NANCY LARSON
was 2 for 2 with a pair of singles and 2 RBI to pace the Pack (2-0). SHARLANA BURNER posted 2 RBI for West Hills.

CHRISTIAN 10,  AVALON 0 (4):  Senior pitcher MELISSA OWENS continues to dominate, as she pitched a 4-inning no-hitter in Thursday's (Mar. 10) Catalina Classic opener. Only one batter reached base (on an error) as the senior right-hander recorded 11 of the 12 outs on strikes. Owens now has 37 strikeouts in 17 innings.

ASHLEY PATERSON was 2 for 2 with a double and 2 RBI, while SARAH SEYMOUR was 2 for 2 with 2 RBI and two runs scored to pace the Patriots (3-0).

SCRIPPS RANCH 2,  HELIX 0: The Highlanders wasted the 2-hit pitching of TERESE DIAZ and CHRISTINE JACOBITES in Thursday's (Mar.10) Cougar Classic contest at Kit Carson Park in Escondido.

"We just need to offensively get on top of things," stated Helix coach JAIME KAHLER.

EL CAMINO 8,  GROSSMONT 0: The Foothillers learned before this lopsided loss on Thursday (Mar.10) at Kit Carson Park that they won't have their ace pitcher DOMONIQUE GUERRA for at least two weeks due to tendinitis.

Things got worse after that.

CAMMI MOORE laced a triple to begin the game against El Camino. But she was stranded at third as her teammates rolled over 1-2-3.

"It was that kind of game for us," said Grossmont coach JERRY LERUD, who reflected on the combination of 4 walks, 4 errors and 7 hits that led to their latest demise.

Moore accounted for half of the Hillers 4 hits.

BONITA VISTA 7,  EL CAPITAN 0:  MEGAN McKUNE smashed a pair of doubles and ASHLEY MARX was 2-for-3 as the Vaqueros succumbed to Bonita Vista in Thursday's (Mar. 10) Hilltop Tournament encounter.

"We hit the ball, but hit it right back at someone," said El Capitan coach JOE COTA. "We were just a little bit off today."

A controversial call came in the 1st inning when El Cap had a runner score from third just before a third out call.

"ASHLEY HART slid home before the call. She scored, but the ump didn't see it," said Cota. "He was very apologetic about it, admitted he'd missed the call."

Despite this loss, the Vaqueros are maintaining an even ledger at 1-1.

WESTVIEW 11,  MOUNT MIGUEL 0 (5):  The Matadors were held hitless as they suffered their second straight Cougar Classic loss.

Wilson's dozen does in Oceanside
EastCountySports.com
ESCONDIDO -- The Valhalla Norsemen lost five starting seniors from last season's San Diego CIF championship roster, but two key components remain intact.
"We still have LACEY (WILSON) pitching and KIMMI (HAYDEN) behind the plate," said Norsemen coach DOUG HARTUNG. "Those are two pretty important parts."

Wilson and Hayden were the 1-2 punch that lifted the Norsemen to victory in their opening pool-play game at the annual Cougar Classic at Kit Carson Park. Wilson struck out 12 batters, while Hayden produced the game-breaking hit, powering Valhalla to a 3-0 triumph over Oceanside.

Wilson and Hayden were both first-team, All-East County selections a year ago, and the reasons many place Valhalla among the best teams in SDCIF Division II this season.

Against the Pirates, Wilson registered strikeouts at a 2 per inning clip in a game shortened to six innings due to a tournament time limit.

Meanwhile, the Norsemen scored all their runs in the 4th inning, as Hayden stroked a two-run single, eventually advancing to third base on the throw to the plate. Second baseman COURTNEY LUDWIG, then laid down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt for the bonus run.

Both Hayden and centerfielder ANDREA ALFANO were 2-for-3 at the plate.

OTHER COUGAR CLASSIC ACTION:

RANCHO BERNARDO 8,  GROSSMONT 5 (5 inn.) :  Losing their season opener was one thing. But an apparent injury to starting pitcher DOMONIQUE GUERRA could be far more serious for the Foothillers.

Grossmont coach JERRY LERUD was concerned by Guerra's complaining of a sore shoulder, but is not ready to put her career on hold.

"She got hit pretty hard," Lerud said. "But only time will tell if she was actually injured."

The Broncos busted the Foothillers with 6 runs in the 3rd inning to break a 1-1 tie.

"It was one of those innings that before you can find the lug wrench the wheels are rolling down the street," Lerud said.

Grossmont fought back with 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th.  MEGAN GREEN's two-run triple was the key blow. CAMMI MOORE smashed a double, a single and drove in a run.

"This team has a lot of character and a lot of characters, too," Lerud said.

ESCONDIDO 2, HELIX 1: The Highlanders opened the season Wednesday (Mar. 9) with a strong challenge to host Escondido, the team many believe to the top-ranked crew in the San Diego CIF section.

The Cougars scored both of their runs in the 1st inning, forcing the Highlanders to play catch-up from the get-go.

"We had way too many strikeouts (10) today," said Helix coach JAIME KAHLER. "We have a real young team (including two freshmen and four sophomores), but they are real promising."

Helix got on the board in the 4th inning. SIPAU LEE-NOA singled, stole second and third and scored on BETH AMANN's bunt.

Lee-Noa pitched a complete game 2-hitter and struck out 4 in a losing cause.

"Lee-Noa pitched an awesome game," Kahler said. "And our infield was spectacular. ALYSSA DRONENBURG, our freshman third baseman played really solid defense and JULIA SOLOMAN, our second baseman, played on the JV last year."

EastCountySports.com

EL CAJON -- The Monte Vista stealth pitching staff logged its third straight shutout Monday (Mar. 7) as the Monarchs edged visiting Our Lady of Peace 2-0 in a non-league encounter.

ROSEANNE ABEYTA pitched a 5-hit shutout as Monte Vista improved to 3-1.

"We came out in the 1st inning and hit the ball hard," said Monte Vista coach SIG CHABROWSKI. "The kids are playing much better than they did last year. The chemistry on this team is good, the kids are loose."

However, the Monarchs did all of their scoring in the 2nd inning. AMANDA WARD drove in the first run with a single and LYDIA VENIEGAS chased home a second tally with a groundout.

WEST HILLS 4, MORSE 2:  BRENNA SANDBERG and MARA THORNTON fired a 4-hitter Monday (Mar. 7) as the Wolf Pack skipped past the Tigers in their Falcon-Fiesta Tournament opener at Morse.

Sandberg allowed just 2 hits and no earned runs over four innings to pick up the win. Thornton slammed the door with three shutouts innings to log the save.

KASEY MYTINGER was 3-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI to pace a 13-hit West Hills attack.

West Hills grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 2nd frame with back-to-back doubles by BRITTANY SWANSON and JAYLEEN BUSH.

Mytinger's RBI single made it 2-0 in the 3rd and NANCY LARSON's base hit plated a third West Hills run in the 4th.

Singles by Mytinger, ASHLEY KOOPMAN and ELISE KOVI gave the Wolf Pack its final marker in the 7th.

Bush, Sandberg and Larson had 2 hits apiece for the Pack, which hosts Eastlake on Thursday (Mar. 9) at West Hills at 3:30 p.m.

CALEXICO -- The Monte Vista Monarchs showed coach SIG CHABROWSKI that they can swing the bat en route to a double-header sweep of host Calexico Saturday (Mar. 5). The Monarchs rattled off 25 hits in just 12 turns at bat as they blew away the Bulldogs 8-0 and 12-0.

Junior ASHLEY MILLER led the charge in the first game, smashing two singles and a triple, while scoring three runs and driving in a fourth. She also stole a base. Miller finished the double-dip 4 for 7 with 6 runs scored.

Patriots keep composed after Mustangs get early runs
EastCountySports.com

EL CAJON -- Christian High managed to beat the rain and the visiting Mustangs of San Dieguito Academy 3-2 in Friday's (Mar. 4) Falcon-Fiesta Tournament opener.

MELISSA OWENS, who has already committed to SDSU, survived two unearned runs in the 1st inning and continued on for one of her typically overpowering performances. The senior right-hander allowed just 3 singles, walked none and struck out 12.

"Our freshman catcher (STEPHANY MELENDEZ) worked well with Melissa," Christian coach ROMA DAWSON said.

Owens also had a base hit and an RBI. JILLIAN ZAVADIL collected a pair of hits and stole a base. ASHLEY PATERSON tripled and scored for the Patriots.

Dawson praised seniors SARAH MOSES, Paterson and Owens.

"Our seniors are real good leaders for this team," Dawson said. "Felt good to get the season started."

Start to season a little too quick for Monarchs

EastCountySports.com

SPRING VALLEY -- It was a less than ideal beginning to the season for the Monte Vista Monarchs. Surrendering a 5-run 1st inning to powerful Torrey Pines spoiled Monte Vista's opener in Thursday's (Mar.3) Falcon Fiesta Tournament game as the host Monarchs fell 8-1 to the visiting Falcons.

After the rugged start, the Monarchs did retaliate with a marker in the bottom of the 1st. Junior ASHLEY MILLER, one of the top athletes at Monte Vista, doubled and eventually scored on a base hit by SDSU-bound ALYSHA DIAGLE.

Miller and Diagle had two hits apiece for Monte Vista, which collected 8 off two Torrey Pines pitchers.

The Monarchs travel to Calexico on Saturday (Mar. 5) for a non-league double-header against the Bulldogs. First pitch is 11 a.m.
