have no-hit performances

EL CAJON - It was a day of something for nothing in Tuesday's
(May 3) East County softball action. Valhalla's LACEY WILSON
and BRENNA SANDBERG of West Hills chalked up no-hitters,
while Steele Canyon's SAMANTHA BEASLEY spun a 3-hitter
and struck out 14 in the Cougars conquest of Helix. The action
doesn't stop there.
CHRISTIAN 2, MORSE 1: Everyone knows MELISSA OWENS can
win any softball game with her standout pitching. And only a few
select teams are brave enough to pitch to the defending East County
batting champion. However, the San Diego State-bound senior, after
already hammering a solo home run and pitching 8 innings without
allowing an earned run, found yet another way to capture a ballgame.
Displaying deceptive speed to steal second base after reaching
on an intentional walk, Owens circled the bases when the throw
skipped into the outfield, giving Christian High the nod over
Morse in Tuesday's (May 3) Eastern League contest.
The victory moved the Patriots (12-8 overall, 3-2 league) within
a game of first place after Mira Mesa nipped league-leading Patrick
Henry, 1-0, in a battle of co-leaders.
"This is the closest league I've ever been in," noted
Owens. "It's exciting."
Owens singlehandedly made the ballgame interesting by launching
a 6th-inning shot beyond the playground swings over the left field
fence, ruining the shutout bid by Morse starter Stefanie Rosario,
who carried a two-hit shutout through five frames. After establishing
an East County home run record with eight blasts last season,
this was only Owens' second homer of the season as the cautious
Tigers (6-13, 0-5) intentionally walked her twice.
Nevertheless, Owens still went 2-for-2, and almost got a hit during
her 8th-inning intentional walk, fouling off a pitch which sailed
too close to the strike zone.
"I guess I got lucky fouling it off, because it wasn't that
good of a pitch and I couldn't have been out," noted Owens.
"Then after I got on, I might've left a little early (on
the steal attempt)."
With SARAH SEYMOUR distracting the catcher just enough
by swinging-and-missing on purpose, the catcher's hurried throw
to nab Owens at second base, instead, skipped into the outfield.
And when the center-fielder failed to come up with the ball cleanly
and let it roll past her, Owens got off the deck from her slide
and raced home with the winning run.
"Melissa is actually one of the fastest people on the team,"
noted teammate SARA GUNTER. "People think she just
pitches and hits the ball over the fence, but can't run because
she is so big (6-foot-1). But she can really move."
Owens, whose average climbed over the .600 mark for the season,
still demonstrated discipline at the plate the one other time
they pitched to her, going with the pitch for an opposite-field
base hit to leadoff the 3rd. After reaching base all four trips
to the plate, Owens' remarkable on-base percentage now sits near
the .700 plateau.
Morse took the lead in the 4th when catcher Chelsea Craig smacked
a lead triple, later scoring when Christian failed to catch a
popup lifted just over the drawn-in infield for an error. Otherwise,
Owens allowed just four total hits, recording 14 strikeouts. Rosario
struck out six and walked four (three intentionally).
The Patriots other hits included a lead double by AMANDA PLUM
in the 2nd, and a pair of seventh-inning singles by SARAH MOSES
and ANDREA GARVIN.
VALHALLA 2, MONTE VISTA 0: How good is this LACEY
WILSON?
In the space of 24 hours, Wilson pitched two shutouts, her latest
a no-hitter on Tuesday (May 3) at Monte Vista in a Grossmont South
League encounter.
The unflapable Valhalla senior pitched her 12th shutout of the
season Monday (May 2) as the Norsemen gained sole possession of
the Grossmont South League.
Wilson (16-1) lowered her senior season ERA to 0.30 while striking
out 13 to raise her season strikeout out total to 171.
"Lacey threw really well today," said her coach, DOUG
HARTUNG of Valhalla. "The only player that reached base
(Monarch SAVANNAH MOYES) we threw out at second base. After
KIM HAYDEN hit the triple, JODIE SCHMEHR pushed
the squeeze bunt across to get the extra run."
"All year long we have been trying the suicide squeeze and
we have been successful just about every time. That's the way
it went today."
"Jodie has been hitting in the number two spot. She's doing
a good job for us."
Monte Vista coach SIG CHABROWSKI was pleased with his pitcher
despite the loss.
"ROSEANNE (ABEYTA) pitched a heckuva game but we were
surgically destroyed today, like a doctor, in one hour and ten
minutes. It was very tough. Lacey only saw 21 batters, Roseanne
faced 25. One team got offense, the other didn't. We don't have
a bench to go to."
Abeyta allowed only 2 runs and 4 hits.
"After that, Roseanne bore down, did a great job -- went
three up and three down, except in the 7th when she faced four
batters," Chabrowski said. "But the damage was already
done. We just could not generate anything.
"Every year we give Valhalla a hard time and they give us
a tough time."
The suicide squeeze has been a primary offensive tool for Valhalla,
which has been successful more often than not.
"It's like the runner is stealing home," Hartung said.
GRANITE HILLS 12, MOUNT MIGUEL 4 - The hot-hitting Eagles
struck for double digits to gain their 8th win in 10 outings,
scoring five times in both the 2nd and 6th innings to bounce visiting
Mount Miguel. The Granite Hills varsity (10-9-1 overall, 4-1 GSL)
is now 2-0 with 32 runs and 31 hits since switching its varsity
home field to the JV diamond last week.
"I don't thinking we'll be switching back," mused third
baseman SARAH ALFORD, who slugged a 3-run homer to ice
the victory in the 6th, sending the ball over the centerfield
fence.
AMANDA OMAHEN and JESSIE SCHATZ registered consecutive
two-run doubles in the 2nd, then CHARNEL ZETSCH added a
double for an additional run to mount a quick 7-0 lead over the
depleted Matadors.
After batting 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI, Zetsch then tossed 2
2/3 innings of no-hit relief, including a string of five straight
strikeouts to make a winner of starting pitcher REBECCA TESAM.
"That was a tough game (Monday) against Valhalla," recalled
Zetsch of an extra-inning loss to the league-leading Norsemen.
"Everyone one knew both teams were on and both pitchers were
on and it would take more than an error to win - there was no
room for mistakes."
"But then we showed we could bounce back, too - this is the
2005 Eagles, not a previous team."
Shaking off the effects of internal problems, the current Granite
Hills hot streak could propel the team deep into the SDCIF Division
I playoffs.
"Even though we lost to Valhalla, we showed we are a good
team -- it was going to be a tough loss to whatever team lost,"
added Alford. "We're going to be in the hunt."
The Matadors (2-19, 0-5) scored all of their runs in the 4th,
as GENEVIEVE COSTELLO opened with a booming double, followed
by a sharp single off the bat of ANDREA BELL. The rally
continued on RBI singles by ASHLEY KIELEY, SONIA GONZALES
and ASHLEY BEASLEY.
WEST HILLS 11, EL CAJON VALLEY 0: Forget the fact
that the Wolf Pack scored 9 runs in the first two innings of Tuesday's
(May 3) Grossmont North League engagement in Santee.
The evening belonged to sophomore BRENNA SANDBERG, who
held the Braves hitless.
"It (the game) wasn't fun to watch, but we'll take it,"
West Hills coach STEVE SUTTON said.
Sutton was talking about the mismatch between the teams, not the
sparkling pitching of sophomore Sandberg, who improved her record
to 7-2.
SANTANA 5, GROSSMONT 0: KATIE THOMAS
drove in two runs and SHAE BASS pitched a 4-hit shutout
as the Sultans skunked Grossmont in Tuesday's (May 3) Grossmont
North League activity.
"We played well as a team, hitting-wise,
said Santana assistant coach SHANNON MORENO. "We have
been struggling the past couple of weeks at scoring runs. But
today we came together as a team and everybody pitched in on getting
hits."
The No. 2-ranked Sultans grabbed a 1-0 edge when JEN KRISMER,
Bass and CHEYENNE COOK fused singles. DANIELLE BALOUGH's
single up the middle gave Santana a 2-0 edge in the 5th.
Coming off a 3-2 win over West Hills, the Foothillers thought
they were primed for a run for the top until they stumbled at
the hands of Santana.
"One day we're up, and the next day?" sighed Foothillers
coach JERRY LERUD. "Then, how often do you have a
bomb scare (to contend with)?"
Grossmont received a telephoned bomb threat early Tuesday morning
and classes were dismissed, campus cleared, at 7:30 a.m. After
thoroughly checking the campus, coaches were notified at 10:30
a.m. that the athletic events would be held as scheduled.
"Our athletic director called with the word that games would
be played, so we had to round up our kids from all over. Some
had gone home, others had gone shopping," Lerud reported.
Noting that their play could go either way from the day's topsy-turvy
beginning, Lerud pondered "Who knows, we could have come
out and hit the ball like we did yesterday (in the Foothillers'
3-2 victory over West Hills). We didn't, but we're all right.
We're still in it."
"(Pitcher ROXY) HESHMATY still isn't back to full
strength (following an asthma attack eight days ago). We just
didn't play well today, didn't even get anyone to third base."
STEELE CANYON 4, HELIX 1: After pulling a narrow
escape at her former school Monday at Mount Miguel, Steele Canyon's
SAMANTHA BEASLEY regained her bully state in the pitcher's
circle Tuesday (May 3) against Grossmont South League rival Helix.
The Highlanders were overmatched as Beasley blazed down 14 Highlanders
on strikes while completing a 3-hitter for her 8th win in 13 decisions.
Helix's SIPAU LEE-NOA, the first batter of the game, took
the second pitch of the game and blasted a home run for the Highlanders.
She later tagged Beasley for a triple.
"We did the exact same thing as we did versus Monte Vista
yesterday," Steele Canyon assistant coach DOUG SUMMERS
said. "That ball was crushed, it was the hardest hit ball
I've ever seen. It was a riseball that didn't rise, hit right
down the middle."
The Cougars have grown accustomed to playing from behind.
"Right now we are always behind at the start of the game,"
he said. "We have won two games in a row, and for eight games
we've been losing at least 1-0 in the 1st inning. The last two
games we haven't let it get us down and have come back and played
pretty well. I've been really happy with the way we're hitting."
Beasley, who drove in 4 runs a day earlier, was 2-for-2 with an
RBI against the Highlanders.

Grossmont's Moore and Miranda go back-to-back
to back Guerra's gutsy pitching effort
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - Early season injuries have stalked the Grossmont Foothillers
all year. However, with a healthy DOMONIQUE GUERRA twirling
in the pitcher's circle, Grossmont is a different team.
GROSSMONT 3, WEST HILLS 2: The Foothillers played
long ball in the 6th inning as CAMMI MOORE and MICHELLE
MIRANDA blasted back-to-back home runs to erase a 2-1 deficit
in the 6th inning to make a winning pitcher of Guerra and a loser
of MARA THORNTON.
"This was a huge win for us, our biggest of the season so
far," Grossmont coach JERRY LERUD said. "This
is the first time in 12 years of coaching that I've had two kids
hit back-to-back balls over the fence. Moore hit a sky ball into
the wind that I hoped the wind wouldn't keep in and then Miranda
hit a shot that was gone for sure."
Guerra, who has been hobbled by injuries all season, turned in
a powerful performance, scattering 4 hits, striking out 8 and
not allowing an earned run.
"Guerra is not 100 percent as yet, but she is getting close
as she proved by getting that last out," Lerud said.
That last out was West Hills slugger KASEY MYTINGER - who
has 7 home runs - but grounded out to end the game.
"We had to beat Grossmont North League-leading West Hills
(19-5, 4-1) to make Tuesday's (May 3) league tussle at Santana
have more meaning. "We know we have the ability. It's just
a matter of getting it all out."
VALHALLA 1, GRANITE HILLS 0 (9): LACEY WILSON
pitched her 11th shutout of the season Monday (May 2) as the Norsemen
gained sole possession of the Grossmont South League by knocking
off the upstart Eagles of Granite Hills.
Wilson (15-1), who lowered her senior season ERA to 0.34 while
striking out 13 to raise her season total to 161, received a winning
nod when freshman KELLY SEITZ hammered a double to the
right-center field fence scoring JODIE SCHMER with the
winning run.
"We had our chances," said Granite Hills head coach
MIKE BERTUSSI. â¤We just couldn't get the
key hits when we needed them. Both teams made the plays when they
had to make them. CHARNEL ZETSCH was on top of her game.
She's one of the best pitchers in the county."
"It wasn't so bad (to lose to them) because it was a good
team," observed Granite Hills assistant coach MARK OBNEY.
"That game could have been 5-0 with a little bit of luck.
We wanted to make a good showing and we did. The girls were not
disappointed with their effort. We gave it everything we had."
Valhalla left runners in scoring position in the 2nd and the 5th
innings while Granite Hills missed scoring scoring opportunities
in the 7th and 8th and 9th.
"Both teams had young players come through all through t
he game," Hartung said.
STEELE CANYON 5, MOUNT MIGUEL 4 (8): SAMANTHA
BEASLEY of Steele Canyon returned to her old stomping grounds
Monday (May 2), pitching an 8-inning complete game and driving
in the winning run.
"This was a very tough game, considering we had six losses
in a row," commented Steele Canyon assistant coach DOUG
SUMMERS. "It was an emotional game for Samantha. I knew
she was really ampped going into the game. And it was difficult
for the parents."
"A lot of offense in the game," he added. "This
is as good as we have hit the ball in about a month."
EL CAPITAN 9, EL CAJON VALLEY 1: "We finally
had our offense and our defense come together for one game,"
said El Capitan coach JOE COTA. "It's nice. This was
CELINA CRUZ's first win. She's been pitching against
some pretty tough teams."
"(El Cajon Valley's AMANDA) SWANN is a pretty good little catcher," Cota noted. "They caught us in a pickle between first and second, and Swann made a good throw to the shortstop, but the ump called interference."
In the 1st inning El Capitan's ASHLEY HART was walked, TENILLE RUST had a Base hit and scored on AMANDA COMB'S double, along with Hart.
In the 2nd inning JANELLE SHAFFER scored on a double by Hart. Rust singled, scoring Hart and Rust came home on a throwing error.
NICOLE MORELLO singled, JULIANNA DUNCAN walked, ALYSSA LOVEDAY was hit by pitch to load the bases. Shaffer was out on a fielder's choice, scoring Morello. Hart singled in Duncan.
El Cajon Valley's CORY RAINEY was walked and scored the Braves' lone run on throwing errors.
Combs gets on by an error, is wild-pitched to 2nd, and scored on STEPHANIE REL-SOLIA's triple. ALYSSA LOVEDAY got a base hit, scoring Rel-Solia.
Cruz pitched a 2-hitter and did not allow an earned runs as she picked up her varsity win after 7 straight losses.

Valhalla's Hayden makes pitch to Memphis,
Tigers think they have a great catch
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - Valhalla High senior KIMMI HAYDEN says she welcomes
new challenges and adventures. She figures to get plenty of both
when she enrolls at the University of Memphis in the fall. Hayden
hopes to be the No. 1 catcher for the Tigers' inaugural softball
season in the spring of 2006.
Hayden, who is batting at a .377 clip and leads Valhalla in most
offensive categories, will be playing for a college coach who
has never seen her play in person. Yet, Memphis coach Windy
Thees offered Hayden a Division I scholarship on the recommendation
of San Diego Breakers' travel ball and La Costa Canyon High School
coach Mike Hill.
"When coach Thees invited me back there on a recruiting trip
(Apr. 7-9) I brought along a video of me playing," Hayden
said. "They said they needed a catcher and I told them I'm
the one for the job."
Not only is Hayden an offensive force, she is also recognized
by Valhalla softball coach DOUG HARTUNG for her ability
to handle pitchers.
"Kimmi has been on varsity all four years for us and is an
important part of (blue chip pitcher teammate) LACEY WILSON's
success as her catcher," Hartung said.
Hayden said she was discussing college opportunities with several
institutions including Rhode Island which did make a scholarship
offer. But all factors were positive when it came to Memphis.
"I just loved the people in Memphis," Hayden said. "They
are so down to earth. They don't care what kind of clothes you
wear or what you look like. They take you as you are."
Memphis is in the process of completing the construction of a
new on-campus softball facility. The Tigers will play in Conference
USA against the likes of Tulane, Southern Mississippi, South Florida
and Houston.

Eagles put 20 up on scoreboard to improve
to 3-0 in South League
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - It was a strange day in East County softball on several
fronts on Tuesday (Apr. 26). Granite Hills and Steele Canyon needed
2 hours and 29 minutes to play seven innings, while Valhalla freshman
KELLY SEITZ continued her long-ball onslaught at the expense
of Helix.
GRANITE HILLS 20, STEELE CANYON 7: Perhaps the
Eagles should play all of their games on the Granite Hills junior
varsity softball diamond from now on.
Amid worries of a possible forfeit should a baseball from the
nearby freshmen game land on their field, the Eagles shifted Tuesday's
(Apr. 26) Grossmont South League encounter against Steele Canyon
some 100 yards to the south. And results of that move were grand.
Hitting for a team cycle in the 2nd inning alone, capped by a
three-run homer by MANDY OBNEY, Granite Hills overwhelmed
the Cougars with season-highs in runs and hits to a lopsided triumph.
Obney finished 3-for-3, scoring four times and driving home four
runs in a career outing for the sophomore. The second baseman
noticed major differences in the fields besides having a regulation
fence in the outfield.
"The dirt is much different," she noted. "First,
there isn't a lot of dirt on this field, so it's as hard as cement,
especially when you're used to playing on the other field which
is so soft."
However, when the subject of the fence came about, there were
no complaints.
"I love that there's the capability of hitting home runs
here," Obney added.
Granite Hills (9-8-1, 3-0) also found the fence on several drives
which nearly left the field's confines. Included were blasts for
doubles by JORDAN CONWAY and AMANDA OMAHEN, while
JESSIE SCHATZ twice smacked the outfield barrier for a
double and a triple.
"I've never played here before, but it was amazing,"
noted Omahen, the catcher, who went 3-for-5 and three runs scored.
"We were worried about a possible forfeit if a baseball landed
on our field, so maybe we should move all of our games here."
After scoring three times in the first, Obney's homer made it
7-0 after two innings, then Conway's three-run double pushed the
lead to 11-3 through four frames.
The Eagles then busted loose with eight runs in the 5th on just
three hits, but taking advantage on five of the nine walks issued
by Steele Canyon pitching.
On any other day, seven runs on 12 hits would give Steele Canyon
an easy victory. Instead the Cougars (10-8, 0-3) were saddled
with their sixth straight loss.
Some of the Cougars' bright spots included a pair of RBI each
by DANIELLE DAVISSON and JAYME JARVIS, while SAMANTHA
BEASLEY, batting leadoff and playing both shortstop and second
base, went 4-for-5 at the plate.
CHARNEL ZETSCH pitched the first five innings for the Eagles
to gain the victory. She also clubbed one of the hardest line
shots of the season in the 6th, only to see the blazer snagged
by left-fielder AMANDA YOUNG of the Cougars.
GROSSMONT 12, EL CAJON VALLEY 3: Catcher MICHELLE
MIRANDA slugged a double and a triple to drive in three runs,
as the Foothillers scored five times in both the 1st and 6th innings
to subdue the visiting Braves in Tuesday's (Apr. 26) Grossmont
North League contest.
Center fielder MONIQUE GONZALEZ and pitcher ROXY HESHMATY
also knocked in a pair of runs, while Heshmaty scattered six hits
to collect the victory. She struck out nine batters.
Grossmont (8-12, 2-2) registered four consecutive RBI hits, including
a two-run double by Miranda. The others were RBI singles by KINDRA
MYERS, Heshmaty and Gonzalez.
In the 5th, CAMMI MOORE bombed a triple to left-center
field, then a series of errors opened the floodgates. Moore also
belted a double for a 2-for-4 outing with two runs scored.
El Cajon Valley (2-13, 0-4) scored all of its runs in the 5th,
as JESSICA COPE capped a 3-for-4 performance with a run-scoring
single. Two batters later, third baseman CORTNI WHEELER
slugged a two-run double.
SANTANA 4, EL CAPITAN 0: Sophomore SHAE BASS
proved she can do more than pitch.
Bass followed a two-out single by KATIE THOMAS with her
first home run of the season giving the No. 2-ranked Sultans (18-3,
3-1) a 2-0 edge in the 2nd inning of Tuesday's (Apr. 26) Grossmont
North League game in Santee.
Santana doubled its lead to 4-0 in the 4th inning. DANIELLE
BALOUGH singled and advanced to third on Medrud's double.
BRIANNA PADILLA ran for Medrud. JEN KRISMER and
Thomas followed with RBI singles.
Medrud blanked the Vaqueros on 5 hits and fanned 5 while rolling
her record to 11-1.
"Their pitcher (Medrud) had a pretty good riseball and our
girls were kind of fishing for the ball," said El Capitan
coach JOE COTA. "Five hits is pretty good against
Medrud. When (Santana) can move between a riseball and a fastball
it keeps you off balance."
El Capitan freshman JULIANNA DUNCAN turned in a strong
pitching performance despite the loss.
"I thought Julianna did a good job hitting the corners,"
Cota said. "She and CELINA (CRUZ) are both freshmen
and they are doing a good job pitching for us. I told the girls
we might have to take our lumps this year and look to come back
next year, but I'm not counting us out this year."
VALHALLA 5, HELIX 0: Valhalla freshman KELLY SEITZ
has become a sight to behold of late.
Seitz slammed a towering solo home run to the opposite field through
a strong head wind in the 2nd inning of Tuesday's (Apr. 26) Grossmont
South League game, which gave the Norsemen a 1-0 lead over the
visiting Highlanders.
It was Seitz 4th homer of the season, three of which have come
against league competition.
"It landed 15-to-20 feet over the fence," Valhalla coach
DOUG HARTUNG said.
Seitz added a 2-run single later in the game.
Valhalla first baseman KRISTYN VESSEY was 2-for-2 with
one RBI for the 4th-ranked Norsemen (17-4-2, 3-0).
Meanwhile, senior LACEY WILSON blanked the Highlanders
on two hits to record her 10th shutout and 14th win in 15 decisions
this season.
MONTE VISTA 3, MOUNT MIGUEL 2: When it comes
to the Grossmont South League championship and a prominent position
in the San Diego CIF Division II playoffs, don't count out the
Monte Vista Monarchs
The Monarchs overcame a 2-0 deficit by scoring three runs in their
final two at-bats Tuesday (Apr. 26) to improve their Grossmont
South League record to 2-1 and overall mark to 13-12. They trail
the front runners by a single game
"It was a very tough game, maybe we hyped the game too much
and were too uptight," pondered Monte Vista coach SIG
CHABROWSKI. "Mount Miguel had to feel like they had us."
Sacrifice flies by ALYSSA PARKER and ROSEANNE ABETYA
tied the game 2-2 in the 5th inning.
The Monarchs pushed across the winning run when ASHLEY MILLER
scored on a passed ball in the 6th inning.
MIRA MESA 2, CHRISTIAN 0: The Patriots wasted
another strong pitching performance by senior pitching ace MELISSA
OWENS in Tuesday's (Apr. 26) Eastern League at Mira Mesa.
In six innings, Owens (11-5) allowed just one earned run and 4
hits while striking out 10 against perennial power Mira Mesa (14-8,
3-1).
That effort would have been good enough for a win against most
teams, but not Erin Tillett and Mira Mesa. Tillett struck out
14 while twirling a 2-hit shutout.
It was a story of missed opportunities for Christian (11-8, 2-2),
which left runners at second and third in the 4th inning and runners
at first and second in the 6th frame.
STAPHANEY MELENDEZ tripled in the 7th, but was cut down
when a safety squeeze backfired.
"We had some people on, just couldn't get a key hit,"
Christian coach ROMA DAWSON said. "We
left six people on base and in each case at least one was in scoring
position.
"The umpire was giving them a wide plate today, was pretty
generous with his strike zone. He called some pretty low strikes."
"Tillett hits the outside corner pretty well."

Mighty Mytinger decides it for West Hills
with seventh home run of season
EastCountySports.com
SANTEE - A pair of fly balls - one by each team - decided
yet another pitcher's duel for the leadership of the Grossmont
North League between West Hills' MARA THORNTON and Santana's
SHAE BASS.
Both tossed 3-hitters in Monday's (Apr. 25) face off, but Thornton
got away with her lone mistake. Meanwhile, Bass' single errant
effort decided the ballgame when Wolf Pack right fielder KASEY
MYTINGER scorched her county-leading 7th home run of the season,
giving 8th-ranked West Hills a 1-0 triumph.
"It went kind of far because I was looking for a high pitch
- I knew Shae wanted to throw a high pitch," said Mytinger,
who deposited the ball deep over the left-field fence to open
the 4th inning. "It was exactly what I was looking for."
The homer enabled Mytinger to tie the Grossmont Conference record
for home runs in a season set last year by Valhalla's SAVANNAH
BROWN (now the starting freshman catcher at Georgia Tech).
Christian High's MELISSA OWENS holds the East County single-season
home run record of eight, which she set last year as a junior.
"One of my goals was to break the record,
but I'm more interested in going to the CIF finals," added
Mytinger. "I got there as a freshman, but we lost. And we
can get there because Valhalla switched divisions, but then, Patrick
Henry moved into our division, so it will still be tough."
Thornton, who sat down 11 consecutive Sultans during one stretch,
moved to within two batters of her shutout until designated player
KATIE THOMAS jolted a pitch deep to left.
While the Wolf Pack swallowed hard on the possibility of losing
another lead late in the contest, Thomas knew the disappointment
would fall on her team´s shoulders.
"I hit it pretty well, but I knew it wouldn't go out,"
explained Thomas, who earlier registered one of her team's three
hits off Thornton. "And the left-fielder made a good catch."
Gliding into position to make the grab was BRIANNA LA CHUSA,
who placed her glove at eye level to haul the ball in just in
front of the railing for the second out.
"I was thinking, 'Please, wind, catch it,'" noted Thornton,
who registered 8 strikeouts. "Katie made good contact, but
I guess I was lucky and Bri made a nice catch."
"The defense was rock-solid behind me today. Not only did
Bri make that catch, (senior third baseman) AMY JOHNSON
started a double play for us to get out of the 6th inning."
Thornton then nailed the outside corner for a called third strike
to retire Bass to finish off the win, giving the Wolf Pack sole
possession of first place at 4-0. Santana, which began the week
ranked No. 2 in the San Diego CIF Section, falls to 2-1 in league.
The Sultans´ other scoring opportunity came in the
1st, when TARYN PROCTOR opened the ballgame with a double,
followed by a walk to TAYLOR KELLY. However, Thornton got
a pair of ground balls to the left side to get the lead runner,
then registered a strikeout to end the jam.
West Hills placed runners on the corners in the 3rd on singles
by JAYLEEN BUSH and SHARLANA BURNER, who played
despite not being listed in the original starting lineup. However,
Bass escaped when NANCY LARSON was called out on a bang-bang
play at first on a strong throw from shortstop by Taylor.
GROSSMONT 5, EL CAPITAN 2: After batting on
even terms through four innings, the Foothillers scored three
times in the 5th inning without the aid of an RBI hit to secure
Monday's (Apr. 25) Grossmont North League victory over the Vaqueros
in Lakeside.
ROXY HESHMATY tossed three innings of no-hit ball in relief
to garner her first save, as Hillers starter DOMONIQUE GUERRA,
who has battled through an injury-plagued season, registered her
first victory of the season.
"Domonique has been hurt all season, so it's nice to see
her finally get a win," said Grossmont coach JERRY LERUD.
"But it was a rough day for a lot of players."
The teams combined for nine errors, including four each on the
left side of the infield for both teams. However, four of Grossmont's
five hits went for doubles to help decide the contest.
After El Capitan took a 1-0 lead in the 1st on an infield grounder
by freshman CELINA CRUZ, the Hillers' JILL TIMMER and
REBECCA OSBORNE slugged back-to-back doubles in the 4th to
tie it. Guerra lifted a sacrifice fly to left giving Grossmont
the lead.
However, the Vaqueros fought back to tie it again in the 4th,
as STACEY NULTON singled home ALYSSA LOVEDAY.
But in the 5th Grossmont scored three times when El Cap booted
the ball three times, as Heshmaty took advantage of the disheartened
Vaqueros by not allowing a hit the rest of the way.

Foothillers, Cougars can't dent win column
in non-conference games
EastCountySports.com
LA MESA -- In a rare battle between softball bullpens, Scripps Ranch reliever Rachel Brown tossed a pair of hitless innings to back the Falcons to a 3-1 non-league decision over host Grossmont.
Coupled with five strong innings by starter Alexia Datko, Scripps Ranch (10-9) limited the Foothillers to just two hits all Saturday (Apr. 23) morning. However, both figured prominently to tie the score.
After Scripps Ranch took a 1-0 lead in the fourth, third baseman JILL TIMMER immediately answered for Grossmont (6-12-1), slugging a booming double to the gap. Timmer later scored on an RBI single to right field by CAMMI MOORE, extending her hot hitting stretch (8-for-23, .348) with safeties in six of her last seven starts.
However, the Falcons beat the bullpen in
the 7th, sandwiching a pair of basehits around an RBI double by
centerfielder Jackie Nguyen, which proved to be the game-winning
run and extending the Hillers losing streak to four contests.
Game 1: PATRICK HENRY 6, STEELE CANYON 0: When
Patrick Henry has Donna Kerr on the mound, the opposition
is in trouble. Such was the case on Saturday (Apr. 23) in the
first game of a non-league doubleheader at Steele Canyon.
Kerr mowed down 18 Cougars on strikes and did not allow a ball
to be hit beyond the infield as she posted her 10th win in 12
decisions.
A slap-bunt single by CHRISTINE BARRIOS in the 5th inning
denied Kerr a no-hitter. It was only the second hit allowed by
Kerr, who has struck out 35 batters in her last 15 1/3 innings.
The Patriots (14-3-1) had runners in scoring position in three
of the first four innings and never failed to get the run-scoring
connection.
Game 2: PATRICK HENRY 7, STEELE CANYON 2: Host
Steele Canyon (10-7) suffered its fifth loss in a row in Saturday's
(Apr. 23) 2nd game of the twinbill in Rancho San Diego.
One startling statistic during the Cougars' current slide is Steele
Canyon has generated only one RBI. That came in this second
game loss when VANESSA ADAME grounded out with the
bases-loaded in the 7th inning.
The only other Steele Canyon run during the double-header came
on a double steal executed by SAMANTHA BEASLEY and JESSICA
SUMMERS in the 4th inning. Trouble is, the Cougars were already
trailing 7-0 at the time.
Despite being tagged with her 5th loss in 11 decisions, Beasley
went 2-for-3 at the plate, including a double. Her sister ERICKA
BEASLEY also had two hits for the Cougars who committed 3
errors to fork over 5 unearned runs in the 3rd inning, expanding
Patrick Henry's advantage to 6-0.

Christian's Owens outlasts Henry's Kerr
in battle of top-notch hurlers; Pack's Krings spins no-hitter
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - It was a wild day in East County softball on Thursday
(Apr. 21) afternoon. Christian High's MELISSA OWENS bested
Patrick Henry ace Donna Kerr in a 9-inning Eastern
League duel of strikeouts, West Hills' KYLEE KRINGS narrowly
missed a perfect game and Monte Vista stunned Grossmont South
League contender Steele Canyon with relative ease.
CHRISTIAN 1, PATRICK HENRY 0 (9 inn.): Pitching doesn't
get much better than this. It was ace versus ace, and neither
Christian High's MELISSA OWENS nor Patrick Henry's Donna
Kerr gave an inch in Thursday's (Apr.21) Eastern League showdown
in El Cajon.
"It was a real pitchers' duel," said Christian coach
ROMA DAWSON. "It was such a nip-and-tuck game - neither
pitcher deserved to lose."
Owens (11-4), who was walked three times and hit in her fourth
at-bat, silenced 7th-ranked Patrick Henry on 5 hits. The SDSU-bound
right-hander struck out 15 and walked only three.
Kerr (9-2) struck out 17 and walked three. But the only hit she
allowed led to her demise.
In the bottom of the 9th, Christian's ASHLEY PATERSON reached
base on an error. JILLIAN ZAVADIL advanced Paterson
to second on a groundout. Owens was walked intentionally, and
that set the stage for SARAH SEYMOUR's heroic hit.
Seymour, who was 0-for-3 up until the 9th, hit a groundball through
the right side for a base hit. Henry wasn't going to let Paterson
score without a play, however. As the throw to the plate arrived,
Paterson had to evade the catcher up the third base line, then
came around the back side and dived for the plate.
"We got a break at the end," Dawson said. "This
was definitely a big win for us. I was really proud of Melissa.
She beat them last year with a home run."
Patrick Henry made a couple of challenges to break through. In
the 4th, Henry began the inning with two singles only to have
Owens strike out the side.
In the 5th inning, the Patriots put runners on base with one out,
but Owens once again made like Houdini.
WEST HILLS 11, EL CAJON VALLEY 0: Sophomore KYLEE KRINGS
missed a perfect game when she muffed a ball that was hit back
to the mound. The official ruling was controversial but those
close to EastCountySports.com determined the ground ball
to be an error.
That was the only blemish on Krings' performance, which resulted
in her third consecutive shutout for No.8-ranked West Hills (18-4,
3-0).
Krings struck out 8 and walked none as she posted her 5th win
without defeat.
"Kylee throws the ball pretty hard," West Hills coach
STEVE SUTTON said. "And her control is excellent."
In 31 innings, Krings has logged 35 strikeouts and walked none.
Sophomore MELISSA HILL was 4-for-5 with two runs and a
pair of RBI for the Wolf Pack. She opened the game with a base
hit and proceeded to steal second and third base before coasting
home on MICHELLE IAVELLI's sacrifice fly.
Senior KASEY MYTINGER drove in 3 runs with her 6th home
run and a double. Mytinger is now batting at a .471 clip (33 for
70).
NANCY LARSON also launched three hits and drove in 2 runs
for West Hills, which is looking forward to Monday's (Apr. 25)
Grossmont North League showdown with Santana at Wolf Pack Park.
SANTANA 4, GROSSMONT 2: Coach JOHN BOBOF's
Santana Sultans haven't won a Grossmont League championship since
1994. A perennial roadblock in the Sultans' path has been the
Foothillers of Grossmont.
Just call these Foothillers a Santana nemesis.
Perhaps that is going to change this year. Dropping two of three
Grossmont North League decisions to Grossmont a season ago forced
the Sultans to share the Silver medal with the Hillers as West
Hills claimed the Gold.
At the moment, No. 2-ranked Santana (17-2, 2-0) is determined
to prove its rating is no fluke. The Sultans have won their last
eight games without interruption.
The Sultans had to override a 2-1 Grossmont lead and did so in
the 4th inning. JEN KRISMER crushed a leadoff double to
left field. SHAE BASS followed with a walk and both runners
rode home on a mammoth three-run home run by freshman KELSEY
McILONIE.
McIlonie's blast cleared the 12-foot fence at the 180-mark in
left field, carried an additional 15 feet on the fly and sailed
over the 20-foot fence protecting the asphalt basketball courts
before it returned to earth.
"I'd say that ball traveled about 250 feet, which is probably
the equivalent of 420 feet in baseball," Bobof said. "And
she's done that twice, not to mention the dozens of times she
hit a ball in that area during batting practice."
McIlonie's blast was all Bass would need to secure her seventh
win in eight decisions. She struck out 8 and held the Hillers
to 6 hits.
Grossmont (6-11-1, 0-2) scored in the opening frame as CAMMI
MOORE drilled a two-out double to left field. She scored on
JILL TIMMER's single.
Santana tied it in the 2nd as KATIE THOMAS doubled and
TARYN PROCTOR plated her with a base hit.
Moore's RBI single in the 3rd inning returned the lead to Grossmont
at 2-1.
After that, though, Bass blanked the Foothillers on two hits over
the final four frames.
Grossmont starter ROXY HESHMATY was leading 2-1, but had
to leave the game after two innings because of an asthma problem.
MONTE VISTA 5, STEELE CANYON 1: For those who have
written off coach SIG CHABROWSKI's Monte Vista Monarchs,
take another look.
It didn't take the Monarchs long to send a message to the favored
Steele Canyon Cougars in Thursday's (Apr. 21) Grossmont South
League encounter.
"It feels good to be in the winning column," said Chabrowski,
whose Monarchs balanced their overall record at 12-12 and leveled
their league ledger to earn a share of third place in the Grossmont
South. Better yet, the Monarchs are only one game behind co-leaders
Valhalla and Granite Hills.
BREANNA McMILLAN blasted a 2-run double and 4-foot-11 freshman
LYDIA VENIEGAS' bunt plated a 3rd run as Monte Vista made
its first inning sting the Cougars from the get-go.
McMillan also handled the Monte Vista pitching chores in the upset
win. The junior right-hander blanked the Cougars (10-5, 0-2) for
5 innings and went the distance, while scattering 8 hits and striking
out 3. She did not allow an earned run as she improved her record
to 6-5.
The Monarchs' ROSALYN BURNS put the hammer on Steele Canyon
with a 2-run single in the 7th inning.
"Defensively and offensively it was a good game for us,"
said Monte Vista coach SIG CHABROWSKI.
In the 4th inning with two Cougars on base, Monte Vista first
baseman ROSEANNE ABEYTA turned a defensive gem with a running,
over-the-shoulder catch of an ERIKA BEASLEY foul ball for
the third out.
In the 7th inning, Monte Vista right fielder Veniegas teamed up
with first baseman Abeyta to turn a key double play.
"Our kids are a lot happier to have the win," added
Chabrowski. "They all think they're better than 5th in the
league (as they were predicted to finish). It's a good feeling
after losing to Granite Hills. It's a positive feeling we can
enjoy for the week."
ASHLEY MILLER also contributed two hits to Monte Vista's
8-hit total.
Steele Canyon ace SAMANTHA BEASLEY was finished after four
innings, surrendering three runs and four hits in four innings.
GRANITE HILLS 6, HELIX 3: A decision was rendered
to determine who will challenge Valhalla for the Grossmont North
League title when Granite Hills emerged from the pack following
Thursday's (Apr. 21) win over host Helix.
Eagles pitcher CHARNEL ZETSCH was staked to a 4-0 lead,
then survived four errors leading to a trio of unearned runs in
the 5th inning to maintain the advantage before her teammates
posted a pair of insurance runs in the 7th.
"We had one really bad inning," said Zetsch, who collected
two of her six strikeouts in the 7th to close out her complete-game
effort. "But I'm so glad we let each other pick each other
up."
Granite Hills only collected three total hits, all in the first
two frames before going hitless over the final 5 1/3 innings.
However, the Eagles still scored four additional times despite
silence from their bats.
"The last couple of games, we've been playing really good
defense," noted Zetsch. "So we'll be ready for Valhalla
on Thursday (Apr.28). It should be a really good game, with the
winner probably winning league and the loser finishing as the
runner-up."
The Eagles (8-8-1 overall, 2-0 GSL) earned their shot at the Norsemen
early when freshman right fielder KYLEE WILSON banged a
two-run double to open the scoring in the 2nd. Zetsch started
the rally with a single, then veteran SARAH ALFORD put
down the first of her two sacrifice bunts, reaching base on a
throwing error.
"With this team, it's hard for us to get a bunt down,"
noted Alford, the senior third baseman. "But moving runners
is important, no matter how you do it."
Meanwhile, Wilson knocked home a run for the third time in four
contests for Granite Hills, which has gone 6-2-1 in its last nine
outings.
"I was nervous with two strikes on me," noted Wilson.
"So I got mad and just swung."
Wild pitches by Helix (6-12, 1-1) played a part in the final four
Eagles runs, but Granite Hills was equally as generous when the
defense took an inning off to move the Highlanders back into the
contest.
Following a lead single by JULIA SOLOMON, CHRISTINE JACOBITES
delivered a basehit, as two errors on the same play advanced both
runners into scoring position. BETH AMANN kept the rally
going with an infield single, and when the ball was thrown away
at first, two runs scored to split the lead in half.
A fourth error allowed BRYNNE COX to reach base, then SIPAU
LEE-NOA followed with a hard ground single to center for another
run to cut the deficit to 4-3. However, Zetsch kept the tying
and go-ahead runners on base by taking matters into her own hands
with a strikeout to end the outburst.
Scotties right fielder CHANTE COLEMAN went 2-for-3, including
a 6th-inning double to represent the tying run, but was stranded.
Helix also hindered itself by issuing six walks and four wild
pitches.
VALHALLA 10, MOUNT MIGUEL 3: Visiting Valhalla maintained
its share of the Grossmont South League lead Thursday (Apr. 21)
as the No. 4-ranked Norsemen marched over hapless Mount Miguel
by scoring in six of their seven turns at bat.
Freshman KELLEY SEITZ came off the bench to drive in three
runs with a home run and a double to pace the Norsemen, who mauled
two Mount Miguel pitchers for 14 hits.
"I liked the way we swung the bats, we did a good job attacking
the softball," said Valhalla coach DOUG HARTUNG. "We
took control early, and were able to give a few extra players
some playing time."
LACEY WILSON and ERICKA MARSH combined for 13 strikeouts
while rationing the Matadors to 3 hits.
"I was happy I was able to get some innings for my No. 2
pitcher (Marsh)," Hartung said. "I started Lacey and
got some innings for Marsh when it was 4-0, but they closed to
6-3 and I had to bring Lacey back in.
"I'm happy with our start in league."

Wolf Pack's Thornton clutches up in final
innings to hold off Hillers
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON -- Less than 72 hours after watching a pair of leads
disappear while just a single out away from victory, West Hills
pitcher MARA THORNTON made sure history would not repeat
in Tuesday's (Apr. 19) Grossmont North League game at Foothillers'
field.
With a pair of Grossmont runners in scoring position in both the
6th and 7th innings, Thornton escaped each jam to pace the Wolf
Pack to a 3-1 decision over the Foothillers.
It boiled down to a duel between Thornton and Grossmont power-hitter
CAMMI MOORE.
"I can't tell you what I threw to her, because I might need
to face her again and I don't want her to know what I threw,"
admitted Thornton, wary she will face the Hillers at least twice
more over the next month. "I'm just looking not to give her
anything good."
Similar to last Saturday's heart-breaking loss to Patrick Henry
in the final of the Falcon-Fiesta Tournament, Thornton carried
a one-hit shutout through five innings. However, an error allowed
Grossmont to put a run on the board to trim the Pack lead to 2-1,
but Thornton coaxed a groundout to escape the jam.
West Hills' BRITTANY SWANSON lifted a sacrifice fly in
the top of the 7th to score AMY JOHNSON to push the advantage
back to two.
But Grossmont was not through. The Hillers staged a comeback bid
in the bottom of the 7th as MONIQUE GONZALEZ and pinch-hitter
REBECCA OSBORNE opened the inning with leadoff basehits.
"They got good hits," noted Thornton. "So I had
to work extra hard."
Thornton, a right-hander, got the first out with one of her 10
strikeouts, then a soft grounder froze the runners in scoring
position for the second out at first base. Thornton then coaxed
Moore to fly out to short left to again perform her escape antics,
running her season record to 8-2.
While Thornton wouldn't reveal her 'out' pitch, Swanson's history
lesson allowed her to post an important insurance run.
"I knew Grossmont's pitcher and what she likes to throw,
so I just had to look for my pitch," said Swanson, the Wolf
Pack catcher. "While Mara hit her spots and told me she'd
get them out, even with two runners on."
West Hills doubled-up the Hillers with eight hits, including a
3-for-4 performance by leadoff batter SHARLANA BURNER,
who reached on two bunts and a short slap, then wheeled down the
line to beat the throw each time.
Burner twice led-off by reaching and stealing second base, yet
was stranded each time. But when she again singled in the 5th,
the play allowed BRIANNA LA CHUSA to score for a 2-0 lead.
"I was kind of nervous, so I tried to just watch the ball
the whole time up there," said Burner, a sophomore center-fielder.
"I'm not a power hitter, so I gotta do something and put
the ball in play."
Moore scored Grossmont's lone run after reaching on a one-out
single, MICHELLE MIRANDA accepted her second walk to advance
Moore, then a throwing error on a ground ball gave the Hillers
an unearned run.
HELIX 8, MOUNT MIGUEL 1: Freshman first baseman TERESE
DIAZ drove in 5 runs with a pair of doubles and a single to
hoist Helix to an easy 8-1 Grossmont South League romp over hapless
Mount Miguel on Tuesday (Apr. 19) in Spring Valley.
Diaz drilled a two-run double in the 5th inning to break a scoreless
tie. Freshman ALYSSA DRONENBURG followed with an RBI single,
staking senior pitcher SIPAU LEE-NOA to a 3-0 lead she
wouldn't lose.
In the 6th frame, junior BRYNNE COX, recently promoted
from the Helix junior varsity, stroked an RBI single giving Helix
a 4-1 lead. More than that, though, it set the stage for Diaz's
3-run double.
"We've added some new faces to the Helix lineup, and it's
proven to be beneficial," Highlanders coach JAIME KAHLER
said. "There was a whole new positive atmosphere out there
today."
Lee-Noa pitched a complete game for the Highlanders (5-11, 1-0),
limiting the Matadors (2-15,0-1) to 4 hits, while striking out
5.
"The secret to this game is when Helix needed hits, they
got them," Mount Miguel coach KATHY WORLEY said. "When
we needed hits, we did not get them."
VALHALLA 5, STEELE CANYON 0: Valhalla senior
LACEY WILSON struck out eight Cougars in tossing a shutout,
while catcher KIMMI HAYDEN belted a pair of doubles in
going 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, as the No. 4-ranked
Norsemen (15-4-2, 1-0) opened defense of their Grossmont South
League crown Tuesday (Apr.19) by dusting off host Steele Canyon.
While the top of the Norsemen lineup consistently reached base
- the first four batters were a combined 7-for-14 - the bottom
half of the card also held its own, driving in three of the team's
five runs. Included was an RBI single by ALLISON JOHNSON,
while KELLEY SEITZ slugged a solo homer in the 6th inning
moments after the Cougars thought they got out of a jam by turning
a double play.
"We hit and we executed; the bats always seemed to come alive
when we needed them to," noted Valhalla coach DOUG HARTUNG.
"And, of course, Lacey had a great game."
Wilson scattered five hits in posting her third consecutive shutout,
running her season ledger to a county-best 13-1. She earlier blanked
Grossmont and El Capitan, now totaling just 13 hits allowed and
26 strikeouts over her last 21 innings.
The Cougars (10-4,0-1), who fielded a jumbled lineup due to a
rash of recent injuries and illness, received a pair of hits by
pitcher SAMANTHA BEASLEY, while DANIELLE DAVISSON
went 1-for-2 with a double and a successful sacrifice bunt.
EL CAPITAN 6, EL CAJON VALLEY 3: Led by the complete-game
pitching of junior JANELLE SHAFFER, the Vaqueros defeated
visiting El Cajon Valley in Tuesday's (Apr. 19) Grossmont North
League contest.
Shaffer checked the Braves on 5 hits and struck out 10 in a complete-game
pitching effort that balanced her ledger at 3-3.
"She's still learning, but gaining confidence," El Capitan
coach JOE COTA said of Shaffer. "Her changeup has
become a very effective pitch for her."
Shaffer nearly missed this start due to jamming the ring finger
on her pitching hand during a weekend workout with her father.
"Janelle is as tough as she is patient," Cota said.
"She rode the pine most of her sophomore year, but she's
starting to come into her own as a junior. Her confidence increases
every time she pitches."
Junior STACEY NULTON was 2-for-4 with 3 runs scored atop
the El Capitan batting order. ASHLEY MARX was also productive
for the Vaqueros with an RBI single in the 2nd inning and a 4th
inning double in the 4th.
CORTNI WHEELER was 2-for-3 with a run scored to pace El
Cajon Valley (2-11, 0-2).
SERRA 3, CHRISTIAN 2 (8): The Patriots were one strike
away from a surprising 2-0 start to their Eastern League schedule,
but a potential game-ending fly ball was allowed to drop to permit
Serra to score the tying run, as the Conquistadors eventually
won Tuesday's (Apr.19) tilt in extra innings.
Three different Christian players had a shot at a short fly behind
second base, but the player who called for the ball thought someone
else might get it in a version of "I got it -- you take it."
"It's just the lack of experience by some of our younger
players," noted Pats coach ROMA DAWSON. "If you
call for it, you have to go through and get it."
The miscue resulted in Patriots pitcher MELISSA OWENS suffering
her second consecutive loss, despite striking out 15 Q's batters.
Owens also recorded one of the team's three hits.
After Serra broke the scoreless tie in the 6th on an unearned
run, shortstop AMANDA PLUM immediately answered to give
Christian the lead, smacking a two-out single to center field
with the bases loaded for a 2-1 lead as JILLIAN ZAVADIL and
SARAH SEYMOUR scored.
The Q's won the game in the 8th on a sacrifice fly by Kristen
Duncan, scoring Ashley Green from third. The pitching victory
went to Alyssa Casiple, who struck out 11 despite five walks,
while batting 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI as the only player
to register more than one basehit.
GRANITE HILLS 3, MONTE VISTA 1: Junior CHARNEL
ZETSCH pitched a 2-hitter Tuesday (Apr.19) as the visiting
Granite Hills Eagles eked out a 3-1 Grossmont South League victory
over Monte Vista.
Zetsch, who took a no-hitter into the 6th inning, also contributed
an RBI double for the Eagles (7-8-1, 1-0).
Monte Vista (11-12, 0-1) broke through in the bottom of the 6th.
Singles by KAITLYN McMILLAN and ALYSSA PARKER set
the stage for a big inning had Granite Hills right fielder KYLEE
WILSON not made a diving catch of a sinking line drive hit
by SDSU-bound Monte Vista catcher ASHLEY DAIGLE.
"If she misses that ball, it rolls to the fence, we get two
runs and Daigle is on 3rd base," Monte Vista coach SIG
CHABROWSKI said. "Then we feel like we are in control."
All of that was wishful thinking on Chabrowski's part.
RBI hits by AMANDA OMAHEN, Zetsch and Wilson gave
Granite Hills all the offensive support it needed en route to
a key Grossmont South League victory.

Ranked Santee teams open league season with
wins
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - The Grossmont North League season began without fanfare
Monday (Apr.18) as No. 2-ranked Santana smoked host El Cajon Valley
9-0 and No. 8 West Hills dusted visiting El Capitan 4-1.
SANTANA 9, EL CAJON VALLEY 0: TAYLOR KELLY
cracked 3 hits in four at-bats while driving in 3 runs to spearheaded
Santana's lopsided victory over the Braves (2-10, 0-1).
It was a challenging day even before the first pitch was thrown
for El Cajon Valley first-year Braves coach MIKE McCLAIN.
The already short-handed Braves had one player in emergency surgery
and another at home with the flu.
"I had to make out three lineups today," said McClain.
"I think MEGAN HILL may be out for the season. AMANDA
SWANN caught for us today and did a nice job. She may stay
at catcher. CHRISTINE ROYS made a couple of good plays
in left, and CORTNI WHEELER was 2 for 2 with a double and
a walk."
"Sophomore JESSICA LASCAREZ has only pitched a little
bit and needs to start pitching against good teams. She pitched
her first complete game ever today and did a good job; she's the
future of our team," McClain added.
Santana (16-2, 1-0) broke the game open with 5 runs in the 3rd
inning to take a 7-0 lead.
DANIELLE BALOUGH gave the Sultans a 1-0 edge in the 1st
inning with an RBI single and TARYN PROCTOR's RBI double
made it 2-0 in the 2nd frame.
KRISTEN MEDRUD (10-1) and ASHLEY MATTOLA combined
on the three-hit shutout for Santana.
WEST HILLS 4, EL CAPITAN 1: BRENNA SANDBERG fired a complete
game 4-hitter while running her record to 4-1 Monday (Apr.18)
as the Wolf Pack clipped the visiting Vaqueros.
The Wolf Pack (16-4, 1-0) put the game away with 2 runs in the
bottom of the 6th. The Pack loaded the sacks on singles by MARA
THORNTON, BRITTANY SWANSON, and Sandberg.
ASHLEY MARX tripled and scored on CELINA CRUZ's
single enabling El Capitan to chop West Hills' lead in half in
the 4th inning.
The parade continued with RBI singles by SHARLANA BURNER
and NANCY LARSON for a 4-1 West Hills lead.

Sultans, Norsemen and "other"
Patriots rate as teams to beat
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - Despite key losses from teams which captured San Diego
CIF championships last season, Santana and Valhalla figure to
head the class of their respective Grossmont Conference leagues.
However, the battle could continue into the postseason for the
first time, as the defending Division III champion Sultans could
meet the Norsemen in the playoffs, after the Division II titlists
were reclassified following last season.
Meanwhile, Christian High, the 2004 Division IV kingpin, will be hard-pressed to capture the top-heavy Eastern League, with Patrick Henry -- the "other" Patriots -- tabbed to claim this City Conference circuit in a battle among three teams with solid pitching.
GROSSMONT NORTH
1. Santana: With one victory over Valhalla and a two-game
sweep of Steele Canyon en route to the Grossmont Conference North-South
Tournament title, Santana earned the role as favorites entering
league play. The aggressive-swinging Sultans don't take many pitches,
while having a pair of capable pitchers who could help overcome
a few pesky holes on defense.
2. West Hills: The Wolf Pack has done everything asked
from of it in the preseason except one thing: capture the "big"
game. West Hills is always there near the finish line, yet still
seeks the spark to push over the top.
3. Grossmont: The Foothillers could move up if they avoid
going up, as in not swinging at every riseball they see. Better
discipline at the plate will ensure better placement in the standings.
4. El Capitan: When the Vaqueros score runs, they actually
own a 7-3 record, which makes them a darkhorse to bump off one
of the favored entries. However, the team has already suffered
six shutouts this season, so gaining consistency on offense will
be a key.
5. El Cajon Valley: Similar to the school's baseball team,
gallant as these Braves have been at times, escaping the cellar
should be the primary goal. The program reached that goal, sort
of, last season, tying El Cap for fourth place.
GROSSMONT SOUTH
1. Valhalla: The absence of six starting seniors from a
year ago hasn't hampered the Norsemen, not with the battery of
pitcher Lacey Wilson and catcher Kimmi Hayden, who led the team
to the Cougar Classic crown.
2. Steele Canyon: The transfer by pitcher Samantha Beasley
isn't the lone reason this corps of Cougars have greatly improved.
If this team continues to grow up quickly, could an upset be in
the offing?
3. Granite Hills: A new coaching staff has put together
a mean lineup which has overcome a 1-5 start to climb close to
the .500 mark, including credits of a revenge win over Scripps
Ranch and a tie against South Bay power Bonita Vista.
4. Helix: The Highlanders always seem to end up being the
South League's perennial darkhorse. This is a team with a quality
pitcher and a couple of productive hitters. Depth and experience
are the question marks here.
5. Monte Vista: Win a pair, drop a pair. That's the beat
of the Monarchs, who seek to make some sort of a run to vault
back into the league's first division. Improvement on defense
may be the first issue this team must tackle.
6. Mount Miguel: How the mighty Matadors have fallen, but
this youngest of all Grossmont Conference teams has shown some
life over the past week, taking Santana to extra innings and giving
the coaching staff renewed hope.
EASTERN LEAGUE
1. Patrick Henry: After downing league rival Scripps Ranch
and then West Hills to take the Falcon-Fiesta Tournament title
over the weekend, the Patriots (13-2-1) ride the arm of sophomore
riseball specialist Donna Kerr. Shortstop Danielle Bryan is one
of the section's top performers on offense and defense.
2. Mira Mesa: The Marauders (11-7) have played the most
difficult schedule in the county and have not shied away from
anyone. After opening 5-5, Mira Mesa has won 6 of its last 8 riding
the arm of pitcher Melissa Tillett and the bat of first baseman
Gina Leomiti.
3. Christian: The best pitcher in the league -- perhaps
the county -- is the Patriots' Melissa Owens, but overall depth
and steady defensive play may simply leave Christian (10-5) as
a spoiler. But that's okay -- the strength of this league will
again prepare coach Roma Dawson's troops for another run at a
Division IV crown.
4. Scripps Ranch: The Falcons (8-8) are steady and solid
at most every position, but playing a game of musical chairs in
the pitching circle, where one of three candidates rotate starts,
may finally doom them despite the reassurance of catcher Kelsey
Tysdal (signed with Loyola Marymount) behind the plate.
5. Morse: The Tigers (6-7) actually defeated Christian's
Owens in a Falcon-Fiesta contest early in the year, but the Patriots
rebounded in the teams' Eastern League opener last Thursday with
an 8-0 pasting to show the real stripes of Morse.
6. Serra: Last season, it was Scripps Ranch which made
a surprising crash to the league cellar. In 2005, don't be surprised
if it's the Conquistadors who may make the unceremonious freefall
after going 2-9-1 in preleague games, However, the Q's (3-9-1)
did upset Scripps Ranch in the league opener, giving some hope
for optimism in Tierrasanta.

Wolf Pack nipped at Falcon Fiesta wire by
Henry, Kerr's 22 strikeouts
EastCountySports.com
DEL MAR -- West Hills pitcher MARA THORNTON carried a 1-hit
shutout through six innings, but Patrick Henry rallied to twice
tie after being down to its final out, pulling out the Falcon
Fiesta Tournament championship after nipping the Wolf Pack, 3-2
in nine innings, in a battle of top ten teams.
Leanna Navarro and Dani Griswold each delivered
clutch hits to extend the contest, then Taylor Hensley
singled home Danielle Bryan with the game-winning run in
the 9th, as the Patriots (13-2-1) scored in each of their final
three at-bats.
Thornton struck out 11 batters and limited the Pats to just four
hits, but Henry starter Donna Kerr was equally impressive.
The sophomore struck out 18 batters through regulation, then added
four more during International Tiebreaker play, finishing with
22 strikeouts.
"My riser was on, so it's a happy day," said Kerr, who
also celebrated her 16th birthday Saturday (Apr. 16). "Then
we got some hits just in time -- different people got hits at
different times for us."
For her efforts, Kerr was tabbed the tournament's most valuable
player.
Second baseman NANCY LARSON staked the Wolf Pack (15-4)
to two separate leads. After the teams combined for just a single
hit through five innings -- the game's first 17 batters combined
were all retired -- Larson reached on a two-out error in the 6th.
KASEY MYTINGER followed with a single, beating out her slow
grounder to shortstop. And when the ball was thrown away, Larson
scored.
Larson helped regain the lead in the eighth. After pinch-runner
ELISE KOVI, who started the tiebreaker at second, moved
to third on a sharp single by Thornton, Larson then reached on
a scratch single, racing down the line to beat the throw after
her slap hit to third to allow Kovi to score.
"I thought Donna pitched decent, but she got us on her riseball,"
noted Larson, a junior, who made a pair of defensive gems at second
base, twice backhanding balls slapped up the middle to throw out
runners at first base. "There's nothing you can really do
but keep fighting back."
However, the Patriots displayed a touch more fight when Griswold
answered on a 2-2 pitch with two out in the bottom of the 8th
, ripping a ground-rule double off-and-over the fence in right
to re-tie the game at 2-all.
Wolf Pack center fielder SHARLANA BURNER broke up the double
no-hitter with an infield single to open the 4th. The Patriots'
initial hit was an infield base hit by Kerr with two out in the
5th.
WEST HILLS 3, SAN DIEGUITO ACADEMY 0 -- The Wolf Pack scored
all of its runs in the 4th inning Saturday morning (Apr. 16) to
claim a semifinal win in the Falcon-Fiesta Tournament at Torrey
Pines.
Following lead singles by West Hills' KASEY MYTINGER (liner
to right) and MICHELLE IAVELLI (bunt), AMY JOHNSON
slammed a run-scoring base hit to center to open the scoring.
West Hills then pressured the Mustangs defense with a bunt by
JAYLEEN BUSH, as the safety squeeze scored one run.
And when the throw to first was thrown away, Johnson circled the
bases for the final run.
Meanwhile, starting pitcher KYLEE KRINGS limited San Dieguito
to just a pair of singles in tossing the shutout. NANCY LARSON
and MELISSA HILL each batted 2-for-3 for the Pack.
MONTE VISTA 4, MORSE 2: Monte Vista SIG CHABROWSKI
has a positive attitude to the point that he believes his
Monarchs are poised for a run for the Grossmont South League championship.
"We're playing a .500 ballgame now," said Chabrowski
of his Monarchs (11-11). "Today I gave them an A+ for effort.
Now we get ready for league."
That break-even mark is pretty good considering the Monarchs are
toiling with an inexperienced pitching staff.
But this team is not all about pitching. Monte Vista has its share
of hitters.
"ALYSSA PARKER was working hard, doing Golden Glove
work at third base, and had seven assists at the hot corner,"
noted Chabrowski of one of his leading hitters.
Neither the Monarchs nor the Tigers were happy to have the game
called just short of the time limit. Monte Vista was up to bat
in the 6th inning with bases loaded and two outs when the umpire
called the game due to the tournament time limit.
"Time elapsed was 1:37," said Chabrowski. "Seemed
to me like our batter should have been allowed her at-bat before
the game was called. She deserved that much. (The tournament time
limit was 1:40.) This was the second time that's happened to Morse.
They weren't happy either."
ASHLEY MILLER was 2-for-3 in the Monarchs leadoff spot.
ROSANNE ALBETYA drive in two Monte Vista runs with a double.
Parker also had an RBI double.
BONITA VISTA 1, CHRISTIAN 0: Superstar MELISSA
OWENS of Christian surrendered her first earned run of the
season Saturday (Apr. 16) and it proved to be the difference in
the Falcon-Fiesta Tournament consolation finale.
The only run of the game came in the first inning. Owens was hardly
fazed by the Barons' breakthrough as she scattered six hits and
struck out 13.
Owens also accounted for half of Christian's 4 hits.
The Patriots (10-6) threatened in the 7th inning as Owens and
SARAH SEYMOUR slashed back-to-back singles. But the
next three Patriots rolled over 1-2-3.
CARLSBAD 8, GRANITE HILLS 7: This game was like a
tennis match - back and forth.
The Eagles (6-8-1) held leads of 3-2 and 7-5, but couldn't hold
on in Saturday's (Apr.16) opening round of the Warhawk Invitational.
"Our defense did not show up," assistant coach MARK
OBNEY. "We were not ready to play defensively."
The Eagles pounded out 9 hits, including two apiece by JESSICA
SCHATZ, CHARNEL ZETSCH and SAGE WOODROW.
"Plain and simple our hitting is speaking for itself,"
Obney said.
Granite Hills is going to need more than pieces of this and that
if the Eagles are to fly by defending champion Valhalla and challenger
Steele Canyon if a Grossmont South League title is in the offing.

Bass reels in Cougars with shutout in Conference
Tournament championship
EastCountySports.com
RANCHO SAN DIEGO - Behind one of the best pitching performances
this season by SHAE BASS, the Santana Sultans put the hammer
down early to prevent a recurrence of their previous meeting against
Steele Canyon. The Sultans jumped out to an early lead in Thursday's
(Apr. 14) rematch against the Cougars and continued on to a 7-0
win, to earn the Grossmont Conference North-South Tournament championship.
Bass struck out 11 Cougars en route to her 2-hit shutout, as only
one Steele Canyon base-runner reached second base all contest.
"Every time I get some runs behind me, it brings out the
confidence in me," explained Bass, who walked one and yielded
just a pair of singles. "It was one of my better games of
the year. But with the way our hitters are hitting, I can even
give up a run or two and still win."
Leading 2-0, Santana (15-2) exploded for five runs in the 5th
inning to turn the contest into a rout. The rally started on a
lead home run by TARYN PROCTOR.
"It was kind of fun to watch the center-fielder turn around
and run," noted Proctor, who registered two of the Sultans'
eight hits off Cougars pitcher SAMANTHA BEASLEY. "After
we beat Valhalla, I kind of knew we'd take the tournament."
In round-robin play, Steele Canyon was an inning away from blanking
the Sultans, but JEN KRISMER lifted a sacrifice fly to
tie a game Santana eventually won 2-1 in 10 innings.
Krismer went 2-for-3 with three RBI in the title bout, first singling
home DANIELLE BALOUGH in the 3rd. Then following a pair
of Cougars errors to place runners in scoring position in the
5th, Krismer clouted a 2-run double to right-centerfield, eventually
completing the rally by scoring on a triple to deep left by KATIE
THOMAS.
"By that time, the errors didn't affect the game's outcome,"
said Bass, who faced only four batters above the minimum for her
shutout. "And I know our team can keep getting better."
Proctor opened the game with a single on the first pitch, moving
to second on a TAYLOR KELLY bunt, then scoring when KRISTEN
MEDRUD singled off the ankle of Beasley, as the ball bounced
into left to give Proctor time to score.
The lone Cougars hits were by DANIELLE DAVISSON, who singled
to right after Bass set down the first 11 Steele Canyon batters,
then VANESSA ADAME singled with two out in the 7th.
VALHALLA 2, GROSSMONT 0: When Valhalla's LACEY
WILSON is on the mound, batting isn't fun. The Norsemen's
senior right-hander proved that again in Thursday's (Nov. 14)
Grossmont Conference North/South Tournament battle of second place
teams.
Wilson (12-1) twirled a 5-hit shutout while walking none and striking
out 8.
"It came down to pitching and execution," said Valhalla
coach DOUG HARTUNG. "That's the way it's been for
us all season. The way we execute was key to this game. We've
had 30 sacrifice bunts this season."
Catcher KIMMI HAYDEN ignited the 3rd inning Valhalla (14-4-2)
rally with a lead base hit. Hayden scampered to second on JODIE
SCHMEHR's sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on KRISTYN
VESSEY's single. A throwing error allowed Hayden to
score from third for a 1-0 Valhalla lead.
ALLISON JOHNSON's squeeze bunt in the 6th inning extended
Valhalla's lead to 2-0.
"This tournament was important for us because we need to
be ready for league, and I think we are," said Hartung, whose
Norsemen are pointing for a second straight league title as they
open Grossmont South League action at Steele Canyon on Tuesday
(Apr. 19). "I like where we are right now."
WEST HILLS 5, HELIX 4 (8 inn.): After succumbing
to West Hills 10-0 in pool play, the host Helix Highlanders made
a game of it Thursday (Apr.14), but the visiting Wolf Pack escaped
with a 5-4 win decided by an International Tie-Breaker in the
8th inning in a battle of third place teams.
The Wolf Pack (14-3) broke a scoreless tie with 2 runs in the
3rd inning. One run scored on an error and the second crossed
on the first of KASEY MYTINGER's two doubles.
Helix (5-13) fought back with a two-out rally in the 6th inning.
ALYSSA DRONENBURG, who was 3-for-4, stroked a two-out
single to set the table for a mammoth home run by TERESE DIAZ,
pulling the Highlanders even at 2-2.
Five runs were scored by the two teams during the 8th inning as
part of the International Tie-breaker.
West Hills struck first with 3 markers. Mytinger's RBI double
gave the Wolf Pack the early lead. AMY JOHNSON's RBI single
made it a two-run spread and the Pack tacked on a 3rd run via
BRIANNA La CHUSA's ground out.
Helix countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the 8th,
including an RBI single by Dronenburg.
"We played a lot better than we did the first time against
this team," said Helix's JAIME KAHLER, whose
Highlanders lost 10-0 to West Hills in pool play.
Nevertheless, the Highlanders have lost five in a row heading
into next week's start of Grossmont South League action.
"We proved we can compete against the tough teams,"
Kahler said. "It's just a matter of fine tuning what we have."
BRENNA SANDBERG pitched a complete game 8-hitter for West
Hills while striking out 6 and walking none while running her
record to 5-2.
EL CAPITAN 1, MONTE VISTA 0: El Capitan's STEPHANIE
REL-SOLIA's single to right-center field scored ASHLEY
MARX in the 4th inning for the only run of the game in Thursday's
(Apr. 14) battle of 4th place teams in the Grossmont Conference
North/South Tournament consolation round.
"It was a pitching duel and a defensive duel," said
Monte Vista coach SIG CHABROWSKI. "For both teams
it was a very well pitched game and solid defense all around."
Marx and ALYSSA LOVEDAY accounted for four of El Capitan's
7 hits.
ASHLEY MILLER and ALYSSA PARKER were the only Monarchs
to gather base hits against El Capitan's JULIANNA DUNCAN
(3-1).
Duncan pitched a 2-hitter in an overpowering complete game performance.
Monte Vista's BREANNA McMILLAN scattered 7 hits, did not
allow an earned but was saddled with the loss.
CHRISTIAN 8, MORSE 0: The Patriots' MELISSA OWENS was
ready for opening day in the Eastern League on Thursday (Apr.
14).
The senior right-hander passed the test with flying colors, hurling
a 1-hitter, while striking out 14 and allowed only two runners
to reach base. The victory raised Owens' pitching mark to 10-2.
ASHLEY PATERSON's two-run single gave Christian (10-5,1-0)
the upper hand 2-0 in the 2nd inning. SARA MELVIN followed
suit with a 2-run single in the 3rd inning to give Owens a lead
she couldn't lose.
Not to be denied on the offensive end, Owens was 2-for-3, including
a 2-run home run in the 5th inning.
Paterson was 3-for-5 to pace the Patriots' 12-hit attack.
