Valhalla's Wilson has Monarchs' number -

EL CAJON - The Monte Vista Monarchs must hate to see Valhalla
coming when LACEY WILSON is on the mound. For the second
time this season, Wilson fired a no-hitter at the visiting Monarchs
in Wednesday's (May 18) Grossmont South League finale. Wilson
(20-3) struck out nine and walked one as only two Monarchs reached
base. In Wednesday's other East County finales, Helix stunned
Steele Canyon 1-0 in nine innings, Granite Hills mauled Mount
Miguel 7-0, Santana dumped El Capitan 7-1 and Grossmont blanked
El Cajon Valley 6-0.
VALHALLA 2, MONTE VISTA 0: The 4th-ranked Norsemen
(23-6-2, 9-1), who made the most out of five hits against a stout
pitching performance by the Monarchs' ROSEANNE ABEYTA,
are seeking the No. 1 seed in Division III of the San Diego CIF
playoffs that begin on Saturday (May 21).
"I expect to be #1 or #2 seed (with Santana vying for the
same)," Valhalla coach DOUG HARTUNG said. "We'll
draw a bye on Saturday then play at home on Tuesday."
Valhalla scored the only runs of the game as KELLY REARDON
cracked a solo home run in the 2nd inning and then in the 4th
KELLEY SEITZ doubled and scored on a single by KRISTYN
VESSEY.
"Today's game was a huge relief for us," Hartung said.
"Lacey bounced back after Monday's performance (a loss to
Granite Hills) and pitched a great game."
HELIX 1, STEELE CANYON 0 (9 innings): SIPAU
LEE-NOA took matters into her own hands in Wednesday's (May
18) Grossmont South League finale in La Mesa.
Not only did Lee-Noa pitch a 2-hit shutout for her 7th win in
17 decisions, she also provided the game-winning hit in the bottom
of the 9th.
Helix's ALYSSA BRITSCHGI hit a flare over first base that
dropped in for a single. Lee-Noa followed with her game-winning
RBI double - her second two-base hit of the game.
"Lee-Noa had a good game -- pitched well and fielded well,"
said Helix coach JAIME KAHLER. "And our defense was
way more solid than it has been.
"Lee-Noa is a phenomenal athlete -- we had three hits in
the game and she had two of them, and got the game-winning RBI
and pitched all 9 innings."
The victory improved Helix's overall mark to 9-18 overall, while
Steele Canyon fell to 13-12.
"Neither team hit very well and there were a couple of controversial
calls that went against us," said Steele Canyon assistant
coach DOUG SUMMERS. "We had our opportunities, but
a blown call at first base and one at home really hurt us."
"In the 5th inning, with two outs, we had a runner on third.
AMY ANTOINE hit a ground ball to short and we thought she
beat it, but she was called out. Then in the 6th inning we loaded
the bases with one out and hit a fly ball to right, but our runner
didn't tag so we couldn't score."
"But we've gone three games in a row without an error."
Helix only had two base runners until the 9th inning.
SANTANA 7, EL CAPITAN 1: Flirting with
the San Diego CIF's No. 1-ranking all season, No. 2 Santana (25-4,10-2)
used a couple of late-inning rallies to stuff any thoughts of
an El Capitan Grossmont North League upset in Wednesday's (May
18) regular season finale.
TAYLOR KELLY drove in a pair of runs and JENNIFER KRISMER
crashed a solo home run to support the powerful pitching of KRISTEN
MEDRUD (13-1) as the Sultans maintained its share of the league
title.
KATIE THOMAS chimed in with an RBI double and ASHLEY
MOTTOLA and DANIELLE BALOUGH produced RBI singles for
Santana.
Medrud surrendered 9 hits, but did not issue a walk and struck
out 5 in her complete game performance.
ASHLEY MARX's RBI single in the 5th inning pulled El Capitan
(11-17, 4-8) to within 2-1 in the 5th inning. Santana scored five
runs in its final two at-bats to secure the victory.

GRANITE HILLS 7, MOUNT MIGUEL 0: At the midway point of the season, Granite Hills
was not even considered a contender for a San Diego CIF Division
I playoff berth.
But now, despite an overall 13-12 mark, the Grossmont South League
co-champions are certain to garner a post-season position.
"Granite Hills finished as co-league champs with Valhalla,"
said Granite Hills assistant coach MARK OBNEY. "People
feel like it's a fluke because we're playing with a bunch of freshmen.
They still aren't taking Granite Hills seriously. But I'm predicting
we'll seed 4th or 5th. We've come a long way from that 2-8 start
of the season. And I find that commendable."
CHARNEL ZETSCH and REBECCA TESAM combined to spin
a 1-hitter at Mount Miguel (3-24, 1-9) in Wednesday's Grossmont
South League finale. The Matadors were no hit by Steele Canyon
two days earlier.
AMANDA OMAHEN drove in 3 runs and SARAH ALFORD
drilled a 2-run double to carry the Eagles' offense against Mount
Miguel.
GROSSMONT 6, EL CAJON VALLEY 0: DOMONIQUE
GUERRA twirled a 3-hit shutout at the visiting Braves in Wednesday's
(May 18) Grossmont North League finale.
"We just wanted to keep our heads in the game and get ready
for CIF," said Grossmont coach JERRY LERUD. "We're
looking for a good seed - I think we'll be on the road."
"Guerra was really sharp today," Lerud added. "She
was ahead in the count all game."

shutout of West Hills 1-0 in an 8-eight inning game in Santee.

Thomas' RBI leaves no doubt that Sultans
can earn share of title
EastCountySports.com
SANTEE: In a dramatic showdown between two of the top fastpitch teams in the San Diego Section, designated player KATIE THOMAS broke a string of seemingly endless zeroes by pitchers SHAE BASS and MARA THORNTON by delivering an RBI single in the 8th inning, lifting Santana to a 1-0 victory over West Hills in the third straight nail-biter between these closely knit programs.
Thomas lined a two-out single to left for the Sultans' second hit of the game, but it was enough to score TAYLOR KELLY from second base to cap another 1-run Grossmont North League epic.
"It wasn't pretty, then I had a blonde moment," said Thomas, who was jammed on a Thornton slider, but muscled the ball over the infield. "We came close to winning league last year, and now we can win it this year finally."
Moments after her hit, Thomas vacated first base in order to celebrate with teammates. However, as the visiting team, the game was not over, but teammates hurried her back to the bag before West Hills could apply a tag.
With the triumph, the Sultans (24-4 overall, 9-2 GNL) move into position to claim a share of their first league crown since 1994 should they defeat suddenly hot El Capitan on the final day of the regular season - Thursday (May 19). West Hills (25-6, 10-2) entered the ballgame having already clinched at least a share of the league title and the league's No. 1 berth for SDCIF playoff consideration.
Nevertheless, the Sultans faithful, who lined the sidelines and most of the right-field fence throughout the outfield, were not complaining.
"Every game we've played has been tough and close," said Santana coach JOHN BOBOF. "These are two even teams and every game it always comes down to just one play."
That one play might have occurred in the 7th inning, when Bass sent a shot to center field for Santana's first hit against Thornton. However, with pinch-runner MICHELLE BRAMLAGE running on contact with two outs, West Hills center-fielder SHARLANA BURNER fired a strike to the plate to catcher BRITTANY SWANSON who applied the tag.
Thomas followed with a similar situation on her hit to left in the 8th, but the throw was wide into foul territory to allow Kelly to score. Bass then survived a one-out walk, coaxing a pair of groundouts to cap her second consecutive 6-hit shutout.
"We had some good opportunities, but Shar made a great throw in the 7th," noted Bass. "But it didn't get us down. Instead, it made us realize we could hit the ball and Katie came through."
Bass twice allowed two hits in an inning, but escaped threats in the 1st and 4th innings with strikeouts. West Hills later placed two runners in scoring position in the 7th with one out, but Bass fanned two more as part of her nine total strikeouts of Wolf Pack batters.
"In the 7th, we talked about walking a batter even though it meant pitching to KASEY MYTINGER," explained Bass on an option to face the East County home run champion. "But I was able to get both batters on outside pitches after I had gone inside to get them earlier."
On both batters, Santana brought its outfielders to the edge of the infield dirt, including when there were two outs, but the Pack was unable to place the ball in play.
Third baseman AMYJOHNSON accounted for two of West Hills⤠six hits. She also walked once in reaching on all four of her trips to the plate.
Following the contest, both Johnson and Mytinger took the school's traditional Senior Stroll around the bases for players participating in their final regular season home game.
The Santana outfield kept the game scoreless by charging forward to make a pair of diving catches. In left, JEN KRISMER robbed JAYLEEN BUSH to open the 5th, then Bramlage made a diving grab of a MICHELLE IAVELLI liner to right to end the 6th.
EL CAPITAN 6, GROSSMONT 0: The Vaqueros took a look toward their future when freshman pitcher JULIANNA DUNCAN scattered seven hits en route to a complete-game shutout of the visiting Foothillers in Tuesday's (May 17) Grossmont North League duel. Although she failed to register a strikeout, Duncan retired a majority of the hitters she faced on easy groundballs to the infield.
"We played with very few mistakes, while Julianna hit her spots well," noted El Capitan coach JOE COTA. "It was a game we deserved to win."
The Vaqueros (11-16 overall, 4-7 GSL) scored two runs on three different occasions, capturing their second straight contest for the first time in almost exactly two months.
NICOLE MORELLO opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 3rd inning to push STACEY NULTON across the plate. Morello later added a double to cap a 2-for-3 outing, extending her current hitting binge to .400 (8-for-20) over the past two weeks.
ASHLEY MARX, the El Cap shortstop, made it 4-0 with a two-run double in the 4th, scoring ASHLEY HART and Nulton. ALYSSA LOVEDAY and TENILLE RUST each banged pinchhit singles for additional runs in the 6th.
Grossmont (11-16-1, 5-6) collected seven
hits, including a pair from third baseman CAMMI MOORE,
who stranded seven runners on base in getting blanked for the
second consecutive contest.
SCRIPPS RANCH 4, CHRISTIAN 1: There were no earned
runs in this Eastern League finale Tuesday (May 17) at Christian.
Christian hard-luck pitcher MELISSA OWENS was undermined
by four errors, which handed the Falcons (14-13, 5-5) all the
offense they needed.
Owens, who has permitted less than 10 earned runs this season,
saw her record dip to 13-9. She struck out 11 and walked none
while limiting the Falcons to 5 singles.
"We changed our strategy on (Scripps Ranch's) Katie Sigler
today (holding her 0-for-4) - she was the one who gave us so much
trouble yesterday," said Christian coach ROMA DAWSON.
In the 5th inning with two outs, Owens was intentionally walked.
That has been the rule rather than the situation for the Christian
High senior this season.
"To her credit, Melissa didn't swing at wild pitches, it's
a credit to her ability to take the intentional walks," said
Dawson. "The first two times today she hit the ball very
hard on a couple of singles, so I can see why they wouldn't want
to fool with her. When we played Mira Mesa and she received four
intentional walks, it was frustrating."
"Christian was a little spotty in the field," Dawson
added. "In the 5th inning we had consecutive misplays, and
that was a little bit of a letdown, but we were able to come back.
We need to get more consistent on offense. I thought the kids
worked hard in their preparation for the game. We're optimistic
about the playoffs."
Dawson has guided the Patriots into the San Diego CIF Division
IV finals the last five years, claiming the gold medal three times.
They figure to be seeded among the top 4 again this season.

Eagles' Zetsch deals crucial shutout against
Valhalla
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON -- In a tale of two seasons for the Granite Hills High softball team, the Eagles needed the first half of the season to re-tool and re-define their roster, while archrival Valhalla simply needed to fine tune its championship program. However, for the Eagles to complete their restructuring and finish even with the Norsemen over the past five weeks, they would need some special performances.
Consider the mission accomplished.
On Monday (May 16) pitcher CHARNEL ZETSCH tossed a two-hit shutout, while JESSICA SCHATZ keyed a 3-run rally in the 5th inning by driving home a pair of runs with a resounding double, powering Granite Hills to a 4-0 blanking of Valhalla. Unless either team gets upset in their final regular season contests later this week, the teams (both 8-1 in league) will share the Grossmont South League crown.
"I give Valhalla (its) win at home, but you have to give us our win at home, too," said Zetsch, who allowed a bloop double to KIMMI HAYDEN to open the contest, then yielded just one additional hit all afternoon. "We all knew going into the game that it wasn't us trying to beat LACEY WILSON, it was about us beating Valhalla as a team."
Wilson, who was seeking her 20th victory of the season, looked like her usual self for two innings. But consecutive one-out walks in the 3rd set the stage for Schatz, who tagged an 0-1 pitch to the barrier in left-center field to clear the bases for a 2-0 advantage.
"Lacey got out of her rhythm and I was ready," noted Schatz, a freshman who batted 2-for-3. "I wanted to go up there and ask for the ball right there so I could drive it."
An error allowed another run to score, then freshman catcher MANDY OMAHEN opened the 5th with her first career over-the-fence homer at any level to push the lead to four runs.
"I stayed back and just swung like there was no tomorrow," noted Omahen, who extended her hitting streak to five games, batting .529 (9-for-17) since going hitless against Wilson in the first round of league play. "It felt seriously great to get my first over-the-fence home run, but to get it off Lacey and Valhalla is especially exciting."
Both pitchers escaped 1st-inning jams with a runner at third and one out. Zetsch escaped with two of her eight strikeouts, starting a stretch of four straight whiffs, while Wilson registered a strikeout and a deep fly out, as leftfielder ANDI ALFANO captured a drive by Zetsch on the warning track.
In the 3rd , both teams saw their first two batters reach on walks, but Zetsch sidestepped the Norsemen on three pop-ups, including a nice over-the-head grab by shortstop NICOLE RIVERA to prevent a bloop single by Hayden for the first out. Meanwhile, Schatz answered with her two-run double.
"We knew what we needed to go, and stepped it up," added Schatz. "I couldn't be any more impressed with our team."
Zetsch then closed out the victory by setting down the final eight Norsemen batters.
Granite Hills moves to 14-9-1 overall, while
Valhalla slips to 22-6-2.

a 6-hit shutout as host and No. 2 ranked Santana (23-4, 8-2) blanked
the Foothillers in Monday's (May 16) Grossmont North League game.
DANIELLE BALOUGH blasted a two-run double in the first
inning, giving the Sultans (23-4, 8-2) an early lead that it wouldn't
lose.
TAYLOR KELLY's 2-run single made it 2-0 in the 2nd inning.
Kelly tacked on a single and a 3rd RBI in the 4th inning.
"(TAYLOR) KELLY had a solid defensive and offensive
game," said Sultans assistant coach SHANNON MORENO.
"(DANIELLE) BALOUGH broke out of her mini-slump that
she was in. Hopefully, we can bring it around again tomorrow (against
West Hills)."
Bass didn't walk a batter as she raised her season record to 10-3,
while striking out six.
CAMMI MOORE accounted for two of Grossmont's 5 hits.
WEST HILLS 12, EL CAJON VALLEY 2: The No. 1-ranked
Wolf Pack prepped itself for Tuesday's (May 17) Grossmont North
League showdown against Santana by burying the Braves with CASEY
MYTINGER crashing her Grossmont Conference-record 10th home
run.
Mytinger's 4th inning blast was a grand slam.
West Hills' AMY JOHNSON joined the home run parade with
a solo shot in the 3rd inning.
Sophomore BRENNA SANDBERG spun a 5-hitter with 9 strikeouts
to earn the win for the Wolf Pack.
Blowing out El Cajon Valley three straight times has permitted
West Hills to substitute liberally.
"We've been able to give our entire team a chance to play
and get some at-bats," said West Hills coach STEVE SUTTON.
"The starters who came out were pulling hard for all the
others who played. Today's game was good for our overall morale."
"Looking ahead to the playoffs, I think we will get a top
four seed," Sutton noted.
STEELE CANYON 6, MOUNT MIGUEL 0: SAMANATHA
BEASLEY and AMANDA JONES combined to fire a no-hitter
at the visiting Matadors in Monday's (May 16) Grossmont South
League encounter in Rancho San Diego.
Beasley struck out 3 and walked 2 during her 5-inning stint before
Jones slammed the door with two spotless innings.
The Cougars (13-11,3-6) took command from the get-go as JESSICA
SUMMERS, AMANDA JONES and SAMANATHA BEASLEY smacked
consecutive singles to open the 1st inning. Beasley notched the
initial RBI. A two-out error plated a second run and ALEXANDRA
YOUNG's RBI single made it 3-0.
The Cougars stacked on 3 more in the 4th as LISA MONGELLI,
AMY ANTOINE and Summers charted RBI.
MONTE VISTA 6, HELIX 2: Playoff conscious Monte
Vista kept its San Diego CIF Division II invitation in the ink
Monday (May 16) by handling Helix in a Grossmont South League
encounter.
ALYSHA DIAGLE belted a 2-run homer to left-center field,
sparking the Monarchs (15-16, 4-5) to a 3-0 first inning lead.
"Daigle's home run was a blast," Monte Vista coach SIG
CHABROWKSI said. "It went out quick to left, about
220 feet."
Added Chabrowski: "We learned from playing (Helix)
last time. AMANDA WARD was solid on defense. She's comfortable
after recovering from her injuries."
ROSEANNE ABEYTA pitched a complete game 5-hitter as the
Monarchs hamstrung the Highlanders.
SCRIPPS RANCH 6, CHRISTIAN 0: The Patriots produced
just 3 hits and ace MELISSA OWENS was roughed up for 5
hits and 4 earned runs in five innings Monday (May 16) as Christian
(13-11, 4-5) fell into a 4th place tie in the rugged Eastern League.
STEPHANY MELENDEZ accounted for two of Christian's three
hits.

Diaz-led Helix sweep of Serra is double
fun
EastCountySports.com
LA MESA - For one of the few times this season, the Helix Highlanders
enjoyed a perfect day. In fact, Saturday (May 14), they doubled
their pleasure by sweeping a non-league double-header from visiting
Serra by the identical scores of 2-1.
Freshman TERESE DIAZ came through with the game-winning
hit in the bottom of the 7th inning in Game One, then pitched
the final three innings of the nightcap to register the save,
giving Helix (10-16) a non-league doubleheader sweep over visiting
Serra.
Moments after the Conquistadors tied the opener in the 7th, ALYSSA
BRITSCHGI capped a memorable first week on the Highlanders
varsity with a leadoff single, going 2-for-3 in the contest. After
a fielder's choice, catcher LAURA SMITH put down a successful
sacrifice bunt, then Diaz drilled a shot to left-center field
to snap the Highlanders' 3-game losing skid.
"Alyssa just came up from the JV, yet stepped up to the challenge,"
said Scotties coach JAIME KAHLER. "She wanted to be
put into a competitive situation, and performed."
SIPAU LEE-NOA spun a 4-hitter to capture the victory, setting
down the first 12 Q's batters of the ballgame. The other Helix
run came in the 4th, when Diaz opened with a double to right-centerfield,
then came home on consecutive singles from ALYSSA DRONENBURG
and CHRISTINE JACOBITES.
Later, Jacobites tossed the first four innings of Game Two to
collect the win, shutting out Serra on just two hits. Diaz then
pitched the final three frames, setting down the final seven Q's
in order for her first save of the season.
"My team was in it, so I was just there to help out,"
noted Diaz. "Just like Serra, our team has tried to work
through some problems, but the JV players that came up are strong,
so we'll have a brand-new team for next year."
However, Kahler maintains aspirations for this year's San Diego
CIF playoffs.
"We still have a better record than a lot of teams in our
division," the second-year coach noted. "So we could
still slip into one of the final playoff berths."
Helix scored single runs in the 3rd and 4th for a 2-0 advantage
in the second game. Following singles by Lee-Noa and Diaz, Dronenburg
rattled an RBI double to open the scoring. One inning later, Jacobites
helped her own cause with a lead single, eventually scoring on
a Lee-Noa's single to left-center.

West Hills prefers league championship to
No. 1 ranking
EastCountySports.com
SANTEE - West Hills coach STEVE SUTTON is looking ahead
to the San Diego CIF playoffs. Presumptuous? Perhaps. Yet, while
Sutton's Wolf Pack (24-5, 9-1) already has a firm grip on the
Grossmont North League championship, the veteran softball skipper
hasn't lost sight of nor the taste for a season-ending victory
over Santana in Tuesday's (May 17) contest. After all, the
Sultans are ranked No.1 despite losing twice to No. 7 West Hills.
WEST HILLS 6, GROSSMONT 3: AMY JOHNSON has become
one of the Wolf Pack's offensive leaders of late. The senior third
baseman, who is 6-for-8 in her last three games, proved to be
the catalyst in Thursday's (May 12) Grossmont North League encounter
on Foothiller flats.
Johnson, who is batting at a .346 clip (9-for-26) against Grossmont
North pitching, keyed a 5-run 2nd inning with a leadoff double.
She added an RBI single in the 4th inning as the Pack moved on
top 6-1.
"Amy is coming into her own and should make all-league,"
West Hills coach STEVE SUTTON said of Johnson who owns
an overall average of .356 (26-for-73). "She has a little
slump in the first part of league, but has turned things around
and is peaking at the right time."
The Wolf Pack received RBI singles from MICHELLE IAVELLI, BRITTANY
SWANSON and JAYLEEN BUSH in a 5-run, 2nd-inning rally,
which was all the support winning pitcher MARA THORNTON
would need to best Grossmont, effectively eliminating the Foothillers
from the Grossmont North League pennant chase.
Thornton scattered five hits while striking out five Hillers as
she rolled her record to 11-3.
SHARLANA BURNER also added two hits as part of a 12-hit
attack by West Hills.
Grossmont (11-14-1, 5-4) tried to rally in the 3rd by loading
the bases, but only scored once when CAMMI MOORE walked
to force home a run.
The Hillers later received a 2-run triple from catcher MICHELLE
MIRANDA in the 5th, scoring both REBECCA OSBORNE (double)
and Moore (walk).
West Hills gained a 2-1 series edge over Grossmont (11-14, 5-4).
Avenging its only league loss (3-2) to the Hillers was sweet for
Sutton and Co.
"We were too 'loosey, goosey' the last time we played them,"
Sutton admitted. "But this time, our girls were focused from
the first pitch. We don't want to share this league championship
with anyone."
That means a victory over Santana is mandatory.

GRANITE HILLS 3, STEELE CANYON
1: Credit Steele Canyon pitcher
SAMANTHA BEASLEY for cooling off the Granite Hills offense
in Thursday's (May 12) Grossmont South League contest in Rancho
San Diego.
The ball-bashing Eagles (13-9-1, 7-1) were limited to four hits,
but those safeties were enough to enable Granite Hills to stretch
its winning streak to four games.
Commenting on the success of the Eagles' softball program, Granite
Hills coach MIKE BERTUSSI said "he girls have turned
it around for us, they're all playing like a team. They have a
lot of heart and desire, there's no quit in them. They've learned
a lot. The pleasure of coaching them is being able to watch them
play. I'm not a controlling person because I have a lot of trust
in them."
AMANDA OMAHEN's RBI triple, followed by JESSICA SCHATZ'
squeeze bunt, staked the Eagles to a 2-0 edge in the 3rd inning.
That would be all the Eagles would need to keep their chances
of a league championship within reach. Granite Hills hosts Valhalla
in a championship encounter on Monday (May 16).
"Everything we hit hard was an out, and everything we hit
easy was right at people," said Steele Canyon assistant coach
DOUG SUMMERS. "We only had two hits that left the
infield. In the 4th we had runners at first and third and VANESSA
ADAME hit a rocket to third base, but it just wasn't high
enough."
"Both pitchers were pitching very, very well," he added.
"This was the closest we've ever come to beating Granite
Hills. Almost everything they hit went straight up -- only one
ball was hit hard and that was the triple by Omahen. It was a
bomb."
MIRA MESA 1, CHRISTIAN 0: It seems that MELISSA
OWENS has to be perfect to put Christian High in the win column
these days.
Once again, Owens was close to perfect but came up on the short
end of Thursday's (May 12) Eastern League game against visiting
Mira Mesa.
The league-leading Marauders (20-7, 8-1) scored the only run without
benefit of a hit and with the aid of two Christian errors in the
7th inning.
"In the 7th inning we thought we had a batter struck out
on a change-up but the call went against us," Christian coach
ROMA DAWSON said. "It would have ended the inning.
We would have liked to have had that call."
Not that the Patriots (13-10, 4-4) were without their chances
to breakthrough against Mira Mesa ace Melissa Tillett, who
walked 8 but allowed just 2 hits."
"With eight walks we couldn't get a run," Dawson lamented.
"We had bases loaded a couple of times with two outs and
she (Tillett) just bore down and we didn't get anything pushed
across. When you've got eight walks you have got to do something
with that."
Half of Tillett's walks were intentional passes to Owens, who
might as well have left her bats at home.
"We had our opportunities in the 1st and 3rd innings, and
in both the 4th and 5th innings we had bases loaded with two outs."
It was a bitter setback indeed.
EL CAPITAN 12, EL CAJON VALLEY 1: STACEY
NULTON and CELINA CRUZ banged out three hits apiece
as visiting El Capitan pounded El Cajon Valley in Thursday's (May
12) Grossmont North League game.
The early summer heat began taking it toll on these two teams.
"AMANDA COMBS, our catcher, was not feeling well,
but gutted it out," JOE COTA said. "I offered
to put someone in for her but she didn't want to come out."
Combs' incentive, perhaps, was centered on El Capitan's shot at
making the playoffs. The Vaqueros (10-16, 3-7), are not a lock
for post-season play in the San Diego CIF Division II tournament,
but they do have a legitimate shot.
El Capitan strung together singles by ASHLEY HART, Nulton
and Cruz to take a 1-0 lead in the opening frame. The Vaqueros
inflated their lead a couple of notches an inning later as El
Cajon Valley errors handed over one run and Nulton's RBI single
tacked on another.
HEATHER BREWER's RBI double capped a 4-run 4th inning as
El Capitan opened up an 8-1 advantage over the struggling Braves
(2-19, 0-10).
"Those kids over there (at El Cajon Valley) have heart, they
don't give up," Cota said. "And neither do our kids.
I told our kids 'We're a little bit better than some teams and
not as good as others.' We scored a lot but there was a little
bit of concern in the 2nd inning. It was kinda like we were letting
them back in the game."

VALHALLA 12, HELIX 0: Freshman KELLEY SEITZ continues to
amaze her Valhalla coaches. Now batting third for the Norsemen,
Seitz smacked a solo home run - her 5th of the campaign - to give
Valhalla a 2-0 advantage in Thursday's (May 12) Grossmont South
League contest at Helix.
The Norsemen (22-5-2, 8-0) continued their mulching of the Highlanders
(8-16, 3-4), turning the game into a rout with six runs in the
6th inning.
Memphis-bound KIMMI HAYDEN drove in 5 runs with a double
and a pair of singles for Valhalla.
After building a 6-0 lead in the 5th, the Norsemen were able to
give pitching ace LACEY WILSON a break from her mound duties.
Wilson allowed just four hits and struck out 8 during her five-inning
stint that raised her record to 19-2.
ERICKA MARSH completed the Valhalla shutout with two innings
of one-hit relief.
MOUNT MIGUEL 3, MONTE VISTA 2: A pair of defensive
flips - one by each team - looked to be successful moves on the
field. However, the switch enacted by the coaching staff from
Mount Miguel proved equally moving to the players both on the
field and in the dugout, allowing the Matadors to come away with
their first Grossmont South League victory of the season.
Settling down after scrapping an experiment on defense just 2
innings into Thursday's (May 12) contest, the Matadors played
error-free the rest of the way, then scoring twice in the bottom
of the 7th inning to steal a victory from host Monte Vista.
"This is how it should feel," exclaimed catcher CATRINA
JONES and pitcher ASHLEY KIELEY practically in unison
after Mount Miguel snapped an 8-game losing streak.
The Matadors placed the potential tying and winning runners in
scoring position after a hit batsman, a walk and a wild pitch
placed the first two batters on second and third bases to open
the 7th. Another wild pitch tied the game. Then victory-starved
Kieley smacked a grounder to the right side which was misplayed
for an error, allowing Jones to waltz home to collect the victory.
Monte Vista scored early when ASHLEY MILLER was hit by
a pitch to open the ballgame, moved to third on a pair of wild
pitches, then scored on a single down the left-field line by ALYSSA
PARKER.
After Mount Miguel tied it, the Monarchs answered in the 2nd when
SAVANNAH MOYES doubled to the fence in right-centerfield,
LYDIA VENIEGAS bunted her to third, then came home on a
passed ball.
However, Kieley proved tough the rest of the way, yielding just
two more hits over the final five innings.

EL CAJON - Plenty of action on the East County softball front
Tuesday (May 10), featuring a home run record, a strike out frenzy,
a no-hitter and a double-header sweep.
WEST HILLS 4, EL CAPITAN 1
WEST HILLS 7, EL CAPITAN 1
West Hills must wonder what it takes to prove itself as one of
the high rollers in San Diego CIF softball. Despite slapping Santana
in each of its last two meetings, the Wolf Pack watched in amazement
as the Sultans were hoisted into the No. 1 spot in the only major
media rankings for high school softball.
In the same poll, West Hills was awarded a No. 7 rating.
Despite feeling slighted, the Wolf Pack took care of business
Tuesday (May 10) in Lakeside, sweeping Grossmont North League
rival El Capitan in a rare mid-week doubleheader.
The first-place Pack didn't waste any time, scoring multiple runs
in the 1st inning of both contests en route to increasing its
overall record to 23-5 and league mark to 8-1.
Included was another homer by West Hills' KASEY MYTINGER
in the nightcap - a 2-run poke to center in the 5th inning - giving
her nine for the season to establish an all-time East County record
she shared for five days with MELISSA OWENS of Christian
High.
"It's not like I go up there trying to hit homers,"
said Mytinger, the team's senior right fielder.
She not impacted by the ratings game, either.
"The rankings don't really mean anything anyway," Mytinger
said. "That's why I don't like rankings."
Twice, Mytinger sent shots to the warning track in center. In
the opener, her blast smacked midway up the fence for a double.
In game two, a Mytinger shot was gloved at the barrier, but dropped
for a two-base error.
Mytinger also circled the bases for a triple on a drive to the
right-field corner to start the afternoon, as she batted 2-for-4
in each contest. All four of her hits went for extra bases.
West Hills started the day with its first two batters scoring
unearned runs. That would be all pitcher KYLEE KRINGS would
need as she tossed a 3-hitter. She struck out seven, with the
lone Vaqueros (unearned) run scoring on an RBI double by ASHLEY
HART.
NANCY LARSON delivered an RBI base hit in the 7th for an
insurance run, and eventually scored on one of Mytinger's two
doubles.
The Wolf Pack was the home team for the second contest, scoring
three times in the 1st, keyed by a two-run double down the line
in left by shortstop MELISSA HILL. The sophomore went 2-for-4
to pace a 13-hit attack.
"That's how we are- we want to win and don't waste time trying
to score," noted Hill, a sophomore. "And once we get
the lead, we don't let them catch up."
MARA THORNTON tossed the first four innings for the victory,
allowing just two hits. BRENNA SANDBERG went the final
three frames to register the save. The only run the reliever allowed
was an RBI single by freshman CELINA CRUZ, who joined teammate
STEPHANIE REL-SOLIA in collecting two hits each in the
ballgame.
PATRICK HENRY 4, CHRISTIAN 2 - For a while, the Christian
High Patriots had to wonder if they'd ever get a bat on a pitch
delivered by Patrick Henry fireballer Donna Kerr in Tuesday's
(May 10) Eastern League matchup.
Kerr, who stuck out all 23 of the batters she faced against Mount
Miguel on Monday, whiffed the first 8 Christian batters she tested
before ALLYSSA GRAUL tapped a ground ball back to the box.
Nevertheless, the 31 consecutive strikeouts is a San Diego CIF
record and flirted with the national record of 35 set by Ashlee
Nicholson of Monadnock Regional High School of East Swanzey,
N.H. on May 30, 2003.
In 2000, Molly Hill of Wayne HS (Illinois) had 33 straight Ks,
but it was in the state's smallest of small divisions. And although
the below record had some obscure web site say it was 37 straight,
the newspaper story in the New Hampshire Union Leader clearly
defined all of the events in Nicholson's record run.
Kerr (14-3) fanned 16 Patriots and came one pitch shy of blanking
Christian (13-9, 4-3). But SARAH SEYMOUR put a ding in
Kerr's totals for the second time in as many Eastern League games.
Seymour burned the Henry ace by slashing a game-winning single
- the only hit allowed by Kerr - in a 1-0 win on April 21.
When Kerr faced Seymour in a crucial situation in Tuesday's (May
10) rematch, once again the Christian High sophomore prevailed.
After MELISSA OWENS walked and JILLIAN ZAVADIL slapped
an infield single, Seymour laced a two-run triple enabling Christian
to slice the Henry lead to 3-2.
"Sarah hit a laser that rolled to the fence," Christian
coach ROMA DAWSON said.
That shot was the only serious assault on Kerr, who was supported
by a superb defense, unlike Owens.
Six Christian errors helped Henry make the most of its four hits
against Owens, who was not working with her regular catcher. None
of Henry's runs was earned.
GRANITE HILLS 9, HELIX 0: Eagles pitcher CHARNEL ZETSCH
tossed a 3-hit shutout, allowing only two runners to reach second
base, helping Granite Hills easily capture its 4th straight win
since switching to the school's junior varsity diamond last month.
Zetsch struck out 15 batters, walked none, and yielded just a
trio of soft singles for her complete-game victory.
Catcher MANDY OMAHEN was the standout on offense for the
Eagles, slugging a triple and a double in a 3-for-3 outing, which
included three RBI.
Omahen belted a run-scoring triple to the gap in right-center
field to key a 4-run rally in the 4th inning, then tagged a two-run
double to left-center in a 5-run fifth.
KYLIE WILSON also smacked a 2-run double in the frame to cap
a 2-for-3 outing, while JESSIE SCHATZ produced a pair of
runs with ground balls to the right side to allow runners to score
from third base each time.
Despite offensive production of 51 runs and 50 hits in four games
since the Eagles switched fields, Helix coaches were fuming about
the field's poor playing conditions.
"The base umpire told me he wouldn't allow a game to be played
on a field in such poor condition," Helix coach JAIME
KAHLER said. "It has gopher holes in the outfield and
more dirt than grass. No varsity game should ever be played on
a field in that bad of shape."
To make matters worse for the visiting Highlanders, right fielder
CHANTE COLEMAN was lost for the season after tearing ligaments
in her ankle after stepping into a gopher hole while racing in
an attempt to catch a fly ball in the bottom of the 6th inning.
Not only did the short-handed Highlanders lose Coleman's services,
the team was forced to play the game's final four outs with only
eight players since all available substitutes had been used.
Following a 5-minute umpires conference, the Scotties were not
allowed to make, as the rule book calls, an "irregular substitution"
and return the one starter on the bench into a different position
on the lineup card.
"We've had so many problems this year," Kahler said.
"Only seven players on my roster now were there when the
season started. But, I feel we still have a shot at making the
(SDCIF Division I) playoffs."
MONTE VISTA 4, STEELE CANYON 3 - The Monarchs took a giant
step toward earning a berth in the San Diego CIF Division II playoffs
with a mild upset of Steele Canyon in Tuesday's (May 10) Grossmont
South League action.
"We changed the lineup a little bit," said Monte Vista
coach SIG CHABROWSKI. â¤The game was a nail-biter.
Steele Canyon battled us from the get-go, they played us real
hard.
Apparently not 'hard' enough.
In a dramatic comeback, the Monarchs (14-15,3-4) erased a one-run
deficit with a two-out rally in the bottom of the 4th inning.
After KAITLYN McMILLIAN singled and ASHLEY MILLER
walked, ALYSSA PARKER doubled to left-center to score both
runners and give the Monarchs a 4-3 edge.
Steele Canyon (12-10, 2-5) had the tying run on third base with
nobody out in the 5th inning, but McMillan kept her poise and
set the next three Cougars down without incident, thus stranding
the potential tying run at 3rd.
SANTANA 13, EL CAJON VALLEY 0 - SHAE BASS and ASHLEY
MATTOLA combined to pitch a 5-inning no-hitter in Tuesday's
(May 10) Grossmont North League engagement in Santee.
The No.1-ranked Sultans (22-4, 7-2) scored 7 runs - keyed by JEN
KRISMER's 2-run double - in the 1st inning and never looked
back.
"Everybody saw the ball real well at the plate today,"
said assistant coach SHANNON MORENO of Santana.
Santana freshman catcher BRITTANY FENN slugged a 3-run
home run and finished the day 3-for-3 with 4 RBI.

pitcher Ericka Marsh (6) pitched a 5-hitter as the Norsemen
beat Mount Miguel 8-1. (5-10-05/Photo by Michael Chipperfield)
VALHALLA 8, MOUNT MIGUEL 1 - Freshman KELLEY SEITZ continued her torrid
hitting, slapping out three hits in as many at-bats as the Norsemen
mauled the Matadors in Tuesday's (May 10) Grossmont South League
victory.
"Since the start of league Kelley has really been hitting
the ball well," said Valhalla coach DOUG HARTUNG.
"And (freshman) JODIE SCHMEHR is doing a good job
at the top of the batting order."
Schmehr was 2-for-4 with 2 runs and one RBI against Mount Miguel
(2-22, 0-7).
"ERICKA MARSH handled the Valhalla pitching, spinning
a 5-hitter while not allowing an earned run. She struck out 7
and walked none while rolling her record to 4-3.
"Ericka did great job," Hartung said. "She had
complete control of the strike zone. It was important to give
LACEY (WILSON) a break."
Valhalla senior catcher KIMMI HAYDEN, who has accepted
a scholarship to the University of Memphis, was 2-for-4 as the
Norsemen's leadoff hitter.
"Kimmi has taken advantage of her speed to really run the
bases well," Hartung added.
