SAN DIEGO - With among the most extensive lineup of future NCAA Division I products ever, the annual San Diego County Senior All-Star Volleyball Matches for both genders also collected one of its largest crowds ever Friday (June 6) at Francis Parker High.

The Grossmont Conference placed a pair of representatives in the girls match, as Nicole Petrie of Helix and West Hills' Erin Hourigan performed for the Blue team. The 26 players, who were nominated by county coaches and were either All-County, All-CIF or All-League performers, were divided into random teams, as the Red team swept to an easy 25-22, 25-18, 25-22 triumph.

The matches also utilized the new 25-point rally scoring system which will be
employed in high schools on a nationwide basis this fall. Other changes
included in the match were the legalization of serves which touch the net and more
liberalization of ball-handling techniques to mirror rules already implemented
in college and club volleyball.

Setter Tyler Bowman of Torrey Pines, the CIF Division I player of the year,
was tabbed most valuable player of the match for the winning Red team by the
media. Bowman recorded 31 assists and five kills, while also being a part of a
pair of stuff blocks.

Meanwhile, the Blue received a match-high 12 kills from Keri Kaiser of Vista,
earning team MVP laurels. Kaiser is headed for Fairfield University, while
Bowman will play for Arizona next season.

Petrie, a first-team, All-CIF Division II honorees, came off the bench to
record three kills. Meanwhile, Hourigan, a second-team choice in Division I,
added two kills and was an important factor at the net with several blocks to help
the Red come back from a 7-point deficit in the final set.

The boys match failed to list any East County performers, as no Grossmont
Conference coach even attended the organizational meeting. However, a variety of
future Grossmont College players were on hand, including: Nick Kent and Sean
Peckenham (Carlsbad), Erik Joller (Rancho Bernardo), Derek Rockwell (Scripps
Ranch), and Jason Rogers (Serra).

SDCIF PLAYOFFS

EL CAJON - Buoyed by a fast start scoring 24 of the match's first 30 points,
the Grossmont Foothillers scored a resounding 3-0 sweep of host Valhalla in
Tuesday's (May 20) SDCIF Division II playoffs, winning 15-4, 15-10, 15-10.

Grossmont was declared the best team in East County this regular season, but
only by the narrowest of margins. Along with a perfect 8-0 run to the
Grossmont North League title, the Foothillers slipped past undefeated
Grossmont South League titlist Valhalla in five games, capturing the final
set in extended play, 19-17.

Nevertheless, the Norsemen received the higher seed to the CIF volleyball
playoffs, forcing Grossmont to travel for Tuesday's quarterfinal round match.
Traveling, they did, but with a chip on their shoulder.

Junior opposite Jamie Crooks came off the bench to power the offense with a
match-high 11 kills, while outside hitter Eric DeDonato added eight putaways.

"We prepared all week and knew we could excel against them and come out with
the win," said setter Matt Bailey, who registered 42 assists. "We would like
to get more respect and play a North County team, but you play who you have
to play in CIF."

The balanced offensive attack saw Hillers middles Tyler Schmidt and Taylor
McDonald added seven and six kills, respectively, while Crooks also led a
strong blocking unit.

"In our last match with them, we just pounded the ball but didn't do much
else," said Crooks. "This time, we adjusted and played very well.

Grossmont (23-4) advances to Friday's (May 23) semifinals against the winner
of the Orange Glen-Scripps Ranch match, to be held at Serra High at 5 p.m.
Scripps Ranch (24-10) is the division's top seed.

The fourth-seeded Norsemen, which received a team-best five kills from junior
Bobby Kunkle, finished their season at 20-6 overall.

East schools nearly shutout at volleyball tournament

EastCountySports.com

SAN DIEGO - The lights failing to work at the Mira Mesa High gymnasium may have necessitated a last-minute move to Scripps Ranch for the annual Marauders boys volleyball tournament Saturday (May 3), but an even bigger power outage occurred among East County entries.

Only one Grossmont Conference school, Valhalla, was able to capture even a single match in pool play, as all six local entries were blanked from the 16-team championship bracket field, which eventually was captured by Scripps Ranch. The Falcons upset Torrey Pines in a rally game after splitting sets, 15-9, 5-15, 19-17.

While Valhalla was able to down San Diego for its lone triumph, 15-7, 15-8, four other local schools - Monte Vista, West Hills, Santana and El Cajon Valley - went winless in three matches, each unable to collect even a single game.

THURS., MAY 1
BOYS
GROSSMONT 3, WEST HILLS 2
-- It may not have been the performance of their lives, but the Foothillers at least can now lay claim being the best boys volleyball team in East County this season after trimming the host Wolf Pack in a Grossmont North League match Thursday (May 1).

Grossmont played sloppy in stretches with a series of missing spiking opportunities, yet survived by scores of 15-7, 14-16, 15-8, 6-15, 15-9, to complete a two-game season sweep of West Hills. The victory, coupled with the Hillers' topping of Valhalla, the top South League team, in five sets earlier this season, give coach Brian Divine's team the best overall record among Grossmont Conference schools.

Middle-blocker Tyler Schmidt, a senior, powered the Hillers with 14 kills. Eric DeDonato, a senior better known for his exploits on the Grossmont soccer team, added 11 kills, while junior opposite Jamie Crooks added 10 putaways.

Meanwhile, Taylor McDonald, who will play football and volleyball at the University of LaVerne next season, added nine kills, mostly on assists from setter Matt Bailey.

GRANITE HILLS 3, MONTE VISTA 0 -- The Eagles have struggled out of the gate at 0-3 after losing nine seniors from their 2002 league championship roster. But given a few weeks to work out the kinks, Granite Hills extended its league winning streak to 16 matches over three seasons after sweeping the host Monarchs.

Freshman Brent Watte powered the Eagles with 10 kills and five service aces, while junior Matt Howard added five kills, as setter Daniel Philips effectively worked the offense. Granite Hills swept the first two sets, then rallied from a 13-7 deficit in game three to take win in extended play (overtime).

VALHALLA 3, STEELE CANYON 0 -- The host Cougars received a rude welcome to varsity competition, scoring just five total points in the Norsemen romp. Jason Dall paced Valhalla with match highs of four kills and seven aces.

HELIX 3, MOUNT MIGUEL 0 -- The Highlanders made it a clean sweep for visiting South League team following its pasting of the Matadors.

Valhalla shows heart of a champion
Norsemen score final 10 points to beat top-seeded Eastlake in 5

ECS.com staff report

MIRA MESA - After top-seeded Eastlake won the first game of the San Diego CIF Division II championship against Valhalla, the third-seeded Norsemen came out and dominated the next two games and then started thinking about being the champs.
But in the fourth game...
"The guys thought they had the trophy in their pockets already," Valhalla coach Tom Hunter said following the five game, 2 hours and 15 minutes contest at Mira Mesa High. "We let them back in the match."
The Norsemen fell behing 14-6 in the fifth game, but came back to win the match's final 10 points to capture the title with a 7-15, 15-3, 15-8, 4-15, 16-14, win over the Titans.
Blake Fowler led the way with 26 kills, while teammate Tyler McCallan added 20.
Caleb Gundert had eight of his 12 digs in game five.
"Caleb held the team together," Hunter said. "We're kind of known for comeback. I told the guys (during a timeout), the guys with the biggest hearts will win, but I didn't say hearts. We got an unbelievable burst of energy."
A crucial play of the game and match came during the comeback. During a long rally, a Titans' smash hit close to the line, but the ball was out by about nearly a foot.
The Norsemen got a kill from McCallan to tie it at 14-14, and after a series of side outs, they got the ball back.
"We knew we had it won then, because I felt we were the fresher team," Hunter said.
At 14-14, Carrona got a block to move Valhalla up 15-14, then after two more side outs to get the ball back, Doroski served and Smith, a junior, put the winner down with a block on the return.
Ryan Smith had eight blocks, while teammate Andy Carrona had four for Valhalla, while setter Zac Doroski had 63 assists. McCallan also had three aces, while Fowler had two.
Valhalla finished the season 23-6, with a nine-game winning streak, while top-seeded Eastlake concluded the campaign 31-6. It was the first title ever in volleyball for Valhalla.
"This is so unbelievable," coach Tom Hunter said. "I've been nervous since the day CIF started, now I can relax
In Division III, Francis Parker defeated University of SD, 15-8, 11-15, 15-11, 15-11, while in Division I, La Costa Canyon beat Mt. Carmel, 15-17, 15-11, 10-15, 15-7, 15-8, in a match that took two hours and 45 minutes.

Valhalla seniors make their mark

For EastCountySports.com

CORONADO - Despite coming in as the higher seed in their San Diego CIF Division II semifinal matchup with Ramona, the Valhalla High boys volleyball team knew only to expect a close outcome with the Bulldogs.
After all, a matchup of common opponents points out that Ramona advanced with a quarterfinal victory at Mira Mesa, while the Norsemen were defeated earlier this season by the Marauders.
The Norsemen held off Ramona and beat them in four, 17-15, 10-15, 15-10, 15-8. Valhalla (22-6) has won eight in-a-row.
Valhalla is third seed and moves into the finals to face top-seeded Eastlake, which defeated San Pasqual, 15-1, 15-10, 15-10, to improve to 31-5
Friday at 5 p.m., the teams will meet in the Divison II championship at Mira Mesa High.
Valhalla's seniors had a big night, as outside hitter Blake Fowler had 26 kills, opposite hitter Tyler McCallan had 21 kills, middle blocker Andy Carrona had 12 kills, while outside hitter Caleb Gundert had 11 winners.
Carrona had four blocks and Zac Doroski set 75 assists.
"Ramona played real tough," Valhalla coach Tom Hunter said. "The whole match was kind of streaky for both sides. We came in looking for a good match."
The first game saw four lead changes and Valhalla led 14-8 serving for the game, but Ramona came back to tie at 14-14 and then got the lead before Valhalla picked up the last three points, including a McCallan kill off a Doroski set for the game.
Valhalla had a 10-4 lead in the second game, but the Bulldogs rallied successfully to even the match.
However, Fowler had six kills in the third game, and Valhalla jumped out 10-1 in the fourth game, as Carrona got the match-winning kill. Fowler also served three aces on the night.
"I thought our serves were tough and were a key," Hunter said. "I was really surprised by the way we jumped out in game four. I was expecting the match to go five.
"We expect a tough, long match with Eastlake. They're well coached and well disciplined, but I think we can win. We match up with them well."
