2004 BARONA STARS SEMI-PRO BASEBALL
Stars' NBC World Series bid ends with middle-of-the-night,
15-inning loss to Hays
EastCountySports.com
WICHITA, Kan. - This one had to hurt. After commanding early leads
of 3-0 and 4-1, the Barona Stars succumbed to the Hays (Kan.)
Larks 7-6 Monday night (Aug. 9) in a 15-inning marathon that concluded
in the wee hours this morning (Aug. 10) at 2:38 a.m. (Central
Daylight Time) at Dumont Stadium. The loss spelled the end of
the Stars' participation in the 70th annual National Baseball
Congress World Series.
How the Stars absorbed their eliminating defeat was ever-so-painful.
What looked like an easy groundout quickly spelled disaster. With
a Larks runner on second base and two outs, J.C. Field hit a chopper
on the infield. Stars second baseman BRETT BARRIOS charged it,
but the ball took a high hop off the turf and skipped over his
head for a single, allowing Jeff Mandel to score what proved to
be the winning run in the 15th frame.
That bad-hop single spoiled an otherwise overpowering strong relief
performance from 6-foot-6 WILL FLYNT (7-3), who held the Larks
scoreless for 8 innings. The 36-year-old left-hander scattered
9 hits while striking out 7 and walking only one.
The Stars took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd, thanks in
large part to doubles from Barrios and MATT CASTILLO. RAMSEY
OCHOA cashed in the first run with a base hit, Castillo's double
made it 2-0 and CHRIS TALLMAN's single made it 3-0.
An RBI single by Ochoa increased the Stars' edge to 4-1 in the
4th inning.
It appeared the Stars were in complete command as Barona starter
JOHNNY RAMIREZ, limited the Larks to one unearned run through
5 innings.
Hays hammered reliever SCOTT DEEN for 5 runs in the 7th inning,
putting the Stars on the ropes.
Barona, however, fought back to tie the contest with a two-out
rally in the 8th inning. Barrios laced a 2-run double down the
left field line to knot the count at 6-6. It stayed that way until
Hays' "groundskeeper single" decided the issue.
Although both teams rang up 16 hits, the bottom line here was
the Stars Nos. 3 and 4 hitters were collectively 0-for-11 against
Hays (Kan.) pitching.
NOTES
The Stars (26-13) finished 3-2 in this year's summer's tournament,
which assures them of a tie for 13th place in the 46-team NBC
World Series. . .This marks the 13th time in 14 trips to Wichita
that the Stars have placed as high No. 13 in the prestigious tournament.
Barona's highest finish was 4th in 1990 . . . Stars outfielder
RAMSEY OCHOA continued his torrid hitting in Wichita, finishing
with a .529 average to (9-for-17) with 5 doubles and 6 RBI . .
. It was also the second time the Stars were involved in a game
that finished in the wee hours of the morning, as they played
until 3:05 a.m. to defeat the Anchorage Bucks 6-1 on Friday (Aug.
6).

Barona takes NBC World Series win over local
Wichita team
EastCountySports.com
WICHITA, Kan. - There is something about the Kansas air that brings
out the best in coach MICKEY DEUTSCHMAN's Barona Stars. Thirty
of the 46-team field that began the 70th annual National Baseball
Congress World Series late last month have been eliminated from
the double-elimination tournament. The Stars ousted one
of the local favorites - the Wichita Braves - 9-2 on Sunday night
(Aug. 8). The victory - Barona's third in four World Series outings
- secured a spot in the Sweet 16 for the Stars (26-12 overall).
MIKE BUTTERFIELD belted his third home run of the tournament -
a 2-run shot in the 4th inning - and finished 2-for-4 with 3 RBI
as the Stars qualified for Monday night's (Aug. 9) NBC showdown
with the Hays (Kan.) Larks.
Butterfield, a Mount Miguel High graduate and current Grossmont
College assistant baseball coach, leads the tournament with his
three homers. OSCAR BARRERAS also homered for Barona, which pounded
out 12 hits in its latest conquest.
An infield groundout by Butterfield gave the Stars a 1-0 lead
in the opening frame. JON ROTH's RBI single doubled the advantage
in the same inning.
The key inning was the 4th when the Stars stretched a 2-1 edge
to 6-1. Barreras led off with a home run, RAMSEY OCHOA chimed
in with an RBI double, and Butterfield blasted a 2-run homer.
JOE McCOY pitched a gem for the Stars, allowing just 3 hits and
one run during an 8-inning stint. TODD HOLVERSON, who flew into
town less than 24 hours earlier, pitched the final frame.
NOTES
Stars outfielder RAMSEY OCHOA continued his torrid hitting, hoisting
his World Series average to .545 (six for 11) with 5 doubles .
. . Butterfield has 6 home runs for the summer season .
. . Once-beaten Hays (Kan.) eliminated the Houston Apollos 8-4
in Sunday's action.

Barona Stars will have to take long road
to title, lose first game at NBC
EastCountySports.com
WICHITA, Kan. - The pitching-laden Barona Stars once again had
a team exploit their weakness in Saturday's (Aug. 7) third round
of the 70th annual National Baseball Congress World Series at
Dumont Stadium. The Santa Barbara Foresters, top-seeded this year
after reaching the NBC finals in 2003, rode the combined 6-hit
pitching of Charlie Boyce and Brandon Sloan to a 6-0 victory over
the Stars.
The Foresters were led offensively by Matt Wilkerson, who was
4-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored. Bill
Hart also added a home run and Nick McCoola was 2-for-3.
The Stars (25-12) made one belated challenge in the 9th inning.
CHRIS TALLMAN singled and WILL CRAIG was hit by a pitch.
That spelled the end for Boyce who was relieved by Sloan. The
Santa Barbara reliever struck out the only two batters he facedc
to slam the door on Barona.
Santa Barbara, which features Grossmont High alum and now UCLA
sophomore pitcher BRANT RUSTICH, will play the Seminole (OK) Rebels
Sunday (Aug. 8) at 5:30 p.m. (PDT) while the Stars face the Wichita
Braves Sunday (Aug. 8) at 8 p.m. (PDT).
NOTES
The Stars' RAMSEY OCHOA cracked two more doubles in the loss to
Santa Barbara, giving him four two-base hits in 7 at-bats in two
games . . . Twenty-one of the 46 teams that began the tournament
have been eliminated.

Stars are 2-0 at NBC World Series as pitching
holds up
EastCountySports.com
WICHITA, Kan. - It's an annual - albeit unwanted - habit. A so-so
regular season followed by a powerful surge come playoff time.
It's not exactly the game plan coach MICKEY DEUTSCHMAN designs
for his Barona Stars. Yet the rocky road has once again earned
the Stars a position in the prestigious 70th annual National Baseball
Congress World Series, which is underway in Dumont Stadium at
the moment. Every moment, in fact, as in Baseball Around the Clock.
The Stars played until 3:05 a.m. (Central Daylight Time) to knock
off the Anchorage (Alaska) Bucs 6-1 in a game that began Thursday
night (Aug. 5) and ended in the wee hours of Friday (Aug. 6),
with the Stars prevailing for their second NBC World Series win
in as many starts.
Barona (25-11) scored 5 runs in the 3rd inning and then let hard-throwing
left-hander WILL FLYNT take care of the rest as the Stars soared
into the winner's bracket showdown against the top-seeded Santa
Barbara Foresters. That game will be played Saturday (Aug. 7)
at 5:30 (PDT) p.m.
Flynt, a 36-year-old left-hander, scattered 7 hits and struck
out 5 as he ran his record to 7-2 while lowering his ERA to 2.28
with the complete game effort.
"I've waited 18 years to pitch in Wichita," Flynt said.
"Once I got out there on that mound there was no way I was
going to let them take the ball away from me."
Deutschman didn't have to, as Flynt was as overpowering as he's
been at any point all summer.
"Everything was working, especially my curveball," Flynt
said.
The Stars' starting pitchers have allowed only 2 earned runs in
16 innings in the NBC Series.
RAMSEY OCHOA's 2-run double gave the Stars a 2-0 lead. OSCAR
BARRERAS' 2-run single made it 4-0. MATT CASTILLO's RBI
double capped the uprising, which was more than enough support
for Flynt.
The Stars are one of four teams that won their first two NBC games
in a field that began with 46 teams representing 17 states.
OTHER GAMES & NOTES
The San Diego Mavericks left town after splitting 4 games in the
double-elimination tournament, falling to the Crestwood (Ill.)
Panthers 9-4 on Friday (Aug.6) . . . The Maxim (Ca.) Yankees (2-0)
feature a 63-year-old first baseman - Jack Gifford , a UCLA Hall
of Famer and a CEO of a $16 Billion company in Silicon Valley
? The Pueblo (Colo.) Chieftains are the only team to win their
first three games.

NBC World Series in Wichita
EastCountySports.com
WICHITA, Kan.- Thanks to Grossmont College assistant baseball
coach MIKE BUTTERFIELD, San Diego County's two contestants in
the 70th annual National Baseball Congress World Series have advanced
to the second round. Butterfield belted two home runs in the Barona
Stars' 7-2 win over the Hattiesburg (Miss.) Heat in Sunday's
(Aug.1) opening round, while the San Diego Mavericks knocked off
the Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) Superstars 10-6 in a 14-inning marathon

Butterfield, a product of Mount Miguel High and Southwestern
College, belted a two-run home run in the 2nd inning and then
hammered a solo shot off the scoreboard in the 4th frame to give
the Stars a 3-0 lead. The Stars first baseman was 3-for-3 with
3 RBI.
Barona built its lead to 7-0 after 7 innings and then cruised
to the victory.
JOE McCOY blanked the Heat on one hit over 7 innings while striking
out 7 for the win.
Following the lead of their league rivals, the San Diego Mavericks
knocked off Fort Lauderdale on the strength of ADAM KOPIEC's 2-run
home run in a 4-run 14th inning.

Stars will make it back to Wichita with
league championship
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - The Barona Stars have punched their ticket for a trip
to Wichita, Kan. and a berth in the 70th annual National Baseball
Congress World Series. The Stars (22-11, 12-2) staked their claim
in the 46-team Nationals by sweeping the North County Waves 8-2
and 12-3 in a Western Woodbat League doubleheader Sunday (July
26) at Casino Diamond. By executing that twin killing, the Stars
clinched the league title and berth in the prestigious NBC event.
BRETT BARRIOS drove in three runs in each of the Stars' victories
over the Waves (21-22), collecting 5 hits in 9 at-bats.
BRIAN SOS clubbed a 2-run home run in the opener that featured
the 6-hit, complete-game pitching of WILL FLYNT, who also logged
10 strikeouts. OSCAR BARRERAS drove in 3 runs, including a 2-run
double in the 1st inning.
In the nightcap, El Capitan High alum SCOTT DEEN, EARL SMITH (Grossmont
College) and CHARLIE BAKER combined to pitch an 8-hitter while
striking out 8. CHRIS McCANN chipped in with a 2-run double as
the Stars broke a 1-1 tie with 7 runs in the 3rd inning.
The Stars close the regular season with single games against the
Waves Tuesday (July 27) at Escondido High at 7 p.m. and against
the NBC-bound San Diego Mavericks on Wednesday (July 28) at Casino
Diamond at 5 p.m.
Although he could not be reached for comment Sunday night, Barona's
veteran skipper MICKEY DEUTSCHMAN earlier expressed doubts whether
the Stars had enough wattage to play with the NBC big boys in
Wichita.
However, those who know Deutschman realize that this Santee businessman
has a knack for pulling a magic act when he's in Wichita, no matter
who his cast may be. Just getting there is the hard part.
Consider that part of the job done.
This summer marks the 14th time in 24 seasons that Deutschman's
ballclub has qualified for the NBC World Series. Even more impressive
the Stars have finished among the top seven in 7 of the previous
13 trips to Dumont Stadium. Barona's best finish came in 1999
when they lost in the semifinals and settled for 3rd place.

Sweep of Waves can send Stars to Wichita
EastCountySports.com
EL CAJON - The Barona Stars are closing in on clinching a berth
in the National Baseball Congress World Series. The Stars can
reserve a spot in the 46-team tournament in Wichita, Kan. with
a sweep of the North County Waves on Sunday (July 25) at Casino
Diamond on the Barona Indian Reservation. First pitch is at 1
p.m.
Basically, the Stars (20-11 overall) need to win the Western Woodbat
League title. To do so, they need two wins in their final four
games. All league champions advance to the NBC World Series. The
San Diego Mavericks, who are members of the Western Woodbat League,
have already earned their ticket to the NBC World Series by winning
the Fourth of July Western Regional Tournament.
In their latest endeavors, the Stars took two of three from league
rival J.P. Longball. Barona came from behind to win 12-10 on Thursday
(July 22) as JORDAN STANDEFER clubbed a 2-run single to break
a 10-10 tie in a game called by darkness after 8 innings.
On Saturday (July 24), the two teams split a doubleheader at Morley
Field. J. P. Longball won the opener 5-1 before the Stars rumbled
back to take the nightcap 15-2.
The Stars turned a 4-1 lead into a rout when they punched across
11 runs in the 6th of Saturday's second game. ERIC BARLOW, BRETT
BARRIOS and MATT CASTILLO drove in 2 runs apiece to pace Barona.
Barlow made a rare pitching start in the opener and struck out
9 in an 8-inning outing.

Stars stay atop Western League with sweep
of Naval squad
EastCountySports.com
BARONA - The Barona Stars can thank the San Diego Navy for helping
keep their hopes for a berth in the NBC World Series afloat. Coach
MICKEY DEUTSCHMAN's ballclub swept a three-game series from the
local Sailors to maintain their lead in the Western Woodbat League
with a 6-1 mark.
Two of Barona's conquests over the Navy were one-run victories,
including Tuesday's (July 13) come-from-behind 8-7 nod at Casino
Diamond. The Stars scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning
for the victory. The key blow was MIKE BUTTERFIELD's game-tying
2-run double. The winning run scored when a pitch hit BRETT BARRIOS
with the bases loaded.
On Saturday (July 17), the Stars swept a doubleheader from the
Navy 11-10 in 11 innings and 10-1 at Point Loma Nazarene University.
The Stars looked as if they were going to score a pair of run-away
victories. They
stormed to a 10-1 lead after 4 12 innings in the opener, but could
not hold that advantage. It took a solo home run by JORDAN STANDEFER
to break a 10-10 tie in the 11th inning to give Barona the win.
A 6-run 8th inning made victory a bit easier for the Stars (18-10,
6-1) in the nightcap. BRIAN SOS gave Barona the early lead with
a 2-run home run in the 2nd inning. WILL FLYNT (5-2) limited the
Navy to one run and 5 hits in 7 innings, as he struck out 12 and
walked only one.
The Stars next play J.P. Longball on Thursday (July 22) at Casino
Diamond at 5 p.m.

Stars in Kamloops for annual tournament,
but forget bats in quick elimination
EastCountySports.com
KAMLOOPS, British Columbia - The Barona Stars have traditionally
done well in Canada. Coach MICKEY DEUTSCHMAN's ballclub once again
received sound pitching but scored just 3 runs in three games
in their latest venture north of the border. Thus, the Santee-based
Stars' participation in the Kamloops International Baseball Tournament
lasted only two days. Over and out.
Here's the breakdown:
Seattle Studs 8, Barona 0 - The Studs, a perennial semi-pro
power, jumped on Barona pitching ace WILL FLYNT for 5 runs in
the 1st inning in Friday's (July 9) opening round disaster.
Barona 1, Portland's Aloha Knights 0 - El Capitan High
alum SCOTT DEEN pitched a 1-hitter and struck out 7 as the Stars
(15-9) remained alive in the double-elimination tournament on
Saturday (July 10) afternoon. This was a major conquest for the
independently owned Stars, as Nike sponsors the Knights.
Canadian All Stars 3, Barona 2 - Once again, the Stars
(15-10) received solid pitching and minimal hitting in Saturday's
second game. The Stars, in fact, mustered only three hits as the
Canadians scored the tie-breaking run in the 6th inning of the
7-inning contest. West Hills High product TODD SNYDER was tagged
with the loss despite 5 2/3 innings of superb pitching. He left
with two outs in the 6th inning and the score tied 2-2. TRAVIS
GOSET gave up one hit in relief, but that blow drove in the decisive
run.
Next up: The Stars return to Western Wood Bat League action on
Tuesday (July 13) when they host the San Diego Navy at Casino
Diamond at 5 p.m. The Stars lead the league with a 5-1 record.

Tournament Monday (July 5) at Casino Diamond. Deen turned in a
complete game and allowed only 3 earned runs, but it wasn't enough
as the Western Wood Bat League rival San Diego Mavericks eliminated
the Stars 4-2 in the semifinals. The Southern California Fire
(28-3) torched the Mavericks in the championship game 10-8 to
secure a berth in next month's NBC World Series in Wichita, Kansas.
The 6-foot-5 Deen scattered 8 hits, walked none and struck out
4 in his losing effort for the Stars, who fell to 14-8 for the
summer.
After falling behind 2-0 in the 1st inning, the Stars picked up
single runs on RBI by RAMSEY OCHOA and JORDAN STANDEFER to balance
the books after 5 innings. The Mavericks snapped the tie on a
2-run single by Rob Nesbitt in the 7th inning and held on for
the win.
Next up for Barona is a trip to Canada where the Stars will compete
in the Kamloops, B.C. International Invitational July 8-11.

Three-straight wins would send Barona back
to NBC in Wichita
EastCountySports.com
LAKESIDE - The Barona Stars need three straight wins on Monday
(July 5) to assure themselves of a berth in the National Baseball
Congress World Series next month in Wichita, Kansas. But first
things first.
The Stars (14-7) must beat the San Diego Mavericks in Monday's
9:30 a.m. game at Casino Diamond to earn a shot at the front-running
Southern California Fire (27-3) in the finals of the NBC Western
Regional Tournament. If the Stars can eliminate the Mavericks,
they must put out the Fire at 1 p.m. and again at 5 p.m. to punch
their ticket to Wichita.
The Stars were engulfed by the Fire 9-2 on Sunday (July 4), which
was Barona's first loss in three Regional games.
In the opening two rounds of the Western Regional, the Stars pounded
the Southern California Saints 10-4 and then outslugged the Inland
Empire Rockets 10-7.

Stars sweep pair from South Bay Saints for
three-game win streak
EastCountySports.com
LAKESIDE - The Barona Stars (11-6) swept a non-league doubleheader
from the visiting South Bay Saints of Carson on Saturday (June
26) at Casino Diamond, taking the opener 16-6 and then the nightcap
11-4 to stretch their modest winning streak to three games.
The Stars broke the first game open with 6 runs in the 7th inning.
The key blow in that frame was ADAM KENNEY's inside-the-park grand
slam. That shot followed a 2-run homer by OSCAR BARRERAS. That
big inning extended a four-edge advantage to a 10-run bulge.
Barreras finished with 4 RBI, while MATT CASTILLO (Grossmont College)
was 3-for-6 with a triple and 3 RBI. BRIAN S0S (Grossmont College),
ERIC BARLOW (El Capitan HS/Grossmont College) and MARIO KNORR
(El Capitan HS) were collectively 9-for-10 with 6 runs scored
and 3 RBI for Barona.
Castillo went 4-for-5 in the nightcap as the Stars matched their
first-game effort of 18 hits. TROY PERDUE (Monte Vista HS/Grossmont
College, SDSU) was 3-for-4 with 2 RBI, ERIK JORGENSON was 3-for-5
with a triple, 2 runs and one RBI. JAKE BOWEN also had 2 RBI with
a double and a single.
BARONA 4, NORTH COUNTY WAVES 1 - WILL FLYNT pitched
7 shutout innings, allowing just three hits while striking out
11 to lead the visiting Barona Stars to a Western Wood Bat League
victory over the North County Waves Thursday night (June 24) at
Escondido High School.
The Stars scored all the runs they needed on MIKE BUTTERFIELD's
RBI single in the 1st inning.
NEXT UP - The Barona Stars will host the annual 4th of the July
Western Regional Qualifying Tournament beginning Friday (July
2). Pairings TBD.

Stars drop first league game of season against
Mavs
EastCountySports.com
LAKESIDE - Any thought Barona Stars might have had at running
away with the Western Wood Bat League championship were dashed
Tuesday (June 22) when the San Diego Mavericks dealt coach MICKEY
DEUTSCHMAN's front-runners their first loss of the summer
season - 4-2 at Casino Diamond.
Former Grossmont High standout BEN COON, now a San Diego State
University starter, limited the Stars (8-6, 3-1) to one earned
run in his 5-inning stint that landed him his second win in four
decisions.
Tyler Wightman's 2-run single broke a 1-1 deadlcok in the 3rd
inning and that was enough for Coon and a pair of relievers to
carry the Mavericks (8-9, 2-1) to the victory.
MATT CASTILLO, a Grossmont College alum, slugged his 3rd home
run of the summer season to account for Barona's lone run.

Stars, Santa Maria split four in early matchup
of NBC powers
EastCountySports.com
SANTA MARIA - In this annual duel of perennial National Baseball
Congress powerhouses, the visiting Barona Stars and Santa Maria
Indians split a weekend four-game series (June 18-20). So what
does that mean?
Coach MICKEY DEUTSCHMAN's Stars could easily have claimed a 3-1
series edge had they not dropped Friday's (June 18) in the bottom
of the 9th by a 4-3 count. Barona's lone error of the evening
led to the Stars defeat.
But the Stars refused to fold their tent as they swept Saturday's
(June 19) doubleheader 13-1 and 4-3 before dropping Sunday's (June
20) series finale 12-4.
Here is the game-by-game breakdown in chronological order:
Santa Maria 4, Barona 3 - The Stars stormed in front 1-0
as MATT CASTILLO hit the first of his two doubles and scored on
MIKE BUTTERFIELD's single. A wild relay from the Santa Maria outfield
handed the Stars an unearned run and a 2-0 edge in the 3rd inning.
Santa Maria fought back to tie it 2-2 in the bottom of the 3rd
inning before JORDAN STANDEFER's solo homer gave the Stars a 3-2
edge in the 4th inning. But it did not stand up as host Santa
Maria came from behind for the win.
Barona 13, Santa Maria 1 - Hard-throwing left -hander WILL FLYNT
pitched 5 innings of 3-hit shutout ball and SCOTT DEEN allowed
only one run and three hits in the final 2 innings as the Stars
won the opening game of Saturday's (June 19) doubleheader.
OSCAR BARRERAS belted 2 home runs, ELLIOTT JOYNER popped a 2-run
homer and El Capitan High/Grossmont College product ERIC BARLOW
slugged a solo shot as the Stars won in stampede fashion.
Barona 4, Santa Maria 3 - OSCAR BARRERAS continued his
torrid hitting for the Barona Stars with 3 hits and 2 RBI in Saturday's
(June 19) second game of a semi-pro doubleheader at Santa Maria.
JORDAN STANDEFER slugged a solo home run that gave the visiting
Stars a 4-2 advantage in the 4th inning. That blow proved to be
the difference as Barona's ADAM LAWFORD, a product of Grossmont
College, allowed only one run in a complete game victory.
Santa Maria 12, Barona 4 - Former El Capitan High/Grossmont
College ERIC BARLOW drove in 3 runs with a single and a 2-run
home run as the Barona Stars succumbed to host Santa Maria in
Sunday's (June 20) series finale.

Stars give JP Longball the boot with eight
extra-base hits
EastCountySports.com
LAKESIDE - The Barona Stars used a 7-run 2nd inning to turn Tuesday's
(June 15) Western Wood Bat League game against visiting JP Longball
into a 14-3 rout. It was the third straight win for the
Stars (5-3, 2-0), who included 4 doubles, 3 triples and a booming
home run in their totals.
El Capitan High alum MARIO KNORR cracked a pair of triples to
drive in a pair of runs while ex-Grossmont College giant BRIAN
SOS doubled twice to plate a pair and score two times.
But the shot heard around East County belonged to Grossmont College
assistant coach and Stars third baseman MIKE BUTTERFIELD. The
Mount Miguel High alum hammered a home run in the 4th inning that
traveled an estimated 450 feet to extend the Stars advantage to
9-1.
Stars starter SHLOMO LIPETZ (Mesa College, UCSD) limited Longball
to one run and 4 hits over the first 5 innings. TRAVIS GOSET (Palomar
College) pitched 3 innings of shutout relief, allowing just one
hit while striking out 4.
Former Grossmont batting standout ANTHONY STABILE was 3-for-3
to lead JP Longball (0-3, 0-2)
The Stars will face the San Diego Navy in a makeup game Wednesday
(June 16) at Casino Diamond at 5 p.m. The Barona bunch will then
travel north for a crucial four-game weekend series against perennial
power Santa Maria.

Stars split two with Marines
EastCountySports.com
LAKESIDE - BRIAN SOS went 5-for-8 with 2 triples, a double and
4 RBI as the host Barona Stars split a Western Semi-Pro Wood Bat
Baseball League double-header with the San Diego Marines Saturday
(June 12) at Casino Diamond on the Barona Indian Reservation.
Sos, a former Grossmont College standout, was 4-for-5 with 4 RBI
as the Stars mauled the visiting Marines 12-5 in the opener. But
the Marines feasted on mediocre pitching and subpar fielding to
win the nightcap 9-8 in 11 innings.
The Stars (2-3) scored 6 runs in the 7th inning to snap a 3-3
tie in the opener. Helix High alum JOEL JERAULD pitched 3 shutout
innings to garner the pitching nod in game one.
Three Barona errors in the nightcap helped the Marines score 5
unearned runs in the second game to gain a split. ERIC JORGENSON
drove in 4 runs with a home run, a single and a sacrifice fly
for the Stars.
Barona has little time to rest as the Stars host Moreno Valley
in a Sunday (June 13) doubleheader at 1 p.m. The Stars will then
host the San Diego Navy on Monday (June 14) and J.P. Longball
on Tuesday (June 15). The latter two games start at 5 p.m. All
four games will be played at Casino Diamond.

based in Santee, opened the season Sunday (June 6) by dropping
both ends of a doubleheader to the host Inland Empire Rockets
11-7 and 15-11.
The Stars, owned and managed by independent businessman MICKEY
DEUTSCHMAN, took a 5-0 lead in the season opener and then succumbed
when coach Derrel Thomas' Rockets scored 7 runs in the bottom
of the 8th inning of game one to claim victory. Thomas spent part
of his major league career with the Padres and Dodgers.
The nightcap was a free-swinging affair as once again Barona blew
an early 5-1 advantage to come up short.
Former El Capitan High/Grossmont College standout and current
Steele Canyon High assistant coach ERIC BARLOW was 5-for-9 with
4 RBI and 3 runs for Barona in the two games.
The Stars meet the San Diego Mavericks on Tuesday (June 8) at
Alliant University at 5 p.m.

KAMLOOPS, Canada - The Barona Stars reached the finals of the Kamloops International Baseball Tournament only to fall to Portland's (Ore.) pitching-rich Aloha Knights 3-0 on Sunday (July 13).
The corporate-sponsored Knights are a traditional power in the world of semi-professional baseball and the Stars (among others) found out why. The Knights allowed just 2 runs in the tournament and 2 hits in the final.
Tournament MVP Scott Nelson of Oregon State drove in two runs and starter Michael Devaney tossed the 3rd shutout in 4 tournament games for the Knights. Aloha, which lost in last year's tourney final, posted a team ERA of 0.47 in its four-game sweep.
After losing 10-3 to the defending tourney champion Seattle Studs in the semifinals on Friday (July 11), the Stars caught fire. Not only did they beat the Studs 6-0 in a rematch on Sunday behind the 4-hit pitching of BRIAN ROSE - the tournament's top pitcher - they swamped the Spokane RiverHawks, 7-2.
However, coach MICKEY DEUTSCMAN's crew gained its greatest momentum on Saturday (July 12).
Trailing the Red Deer Riggers 8-3 after 5 frames, the Stars scored 4 runs in the 6th and one more in the 7th to force extra innings.
The Stars needed one inning of overtime to settle the issue. Catcher MIKE BUTTERFIELD, a Mount Miguel High alum, former Pacific Coast Conference Player of the Year and now Grossmont College assistant coach, won the game 11-8 with a three-run homer in the 8th inning.
"That was real big. It propelled us (to the finals)," said Stars shortstop ERIC BARLOW (El Capitan HS/Grossmont College), who won the Mr. Hustle Award in the tournament.
Stars starter COLLIN PERSCHON had 8 strikeouts, twice as many as Devaney, in the final. It was the 9 walks that hurt him.
"Seattle came out, underestimated these guys (the Stars) and they paid for it," said Devaney, who pitches for Concordia University in Portland. "Seeing that happen to Seattle really opened our eyes that we had to play and not be relieved that it wasn't Seattle, because Seattle is a good team."
The Stars threatened in the 9th ninth inning of the final. Devaney allowed only his second walk and, with MARK OKANO on first and two outs, OSCAR BARRERAS singled.
But Devaney escaped when the eager Butterfield
popped up to end the game.

STARS WOES ARE ONLY ON ROAD, WIN OPENER AT KAMLOOPS
EastCountySports.com
KAMLOOPS, Canada - Ever since MICKEY DEUTSCHMAN
took the reins of the San
Diego/Barona Stars a couple of decades ago, his teams have had
a flare for the dramatic - albeit unintentionally, sometimes.
After spending 27 hours to get there, the Stars won their opening
game of the Kamloops International Tournament Friday (July 11),
knocking off the Everett (Wash.) Merchants, 6-3.
Despite all the obstacles, marred by flight delays, car rental closures and spending a night in the airport, the Stars were able to shine come game time.
"We had a tough ride here but we managed to battle," said third baseman Oscar Barreras, San Diego's most valuable player. "Early in the lineup, a lot of guys were taking extra bases and getting men in scoring position. All we had to do was put the ball in play. It's not very hard when the top of the lineup is doing its job."
The Stars' travel plan challenges began from lift-off when the plane they were waiting to board was re-routed to Los Angeles. Four hours later the Stars were finally in the air, winging their way North. But they were too late to make their connecting flight to Seattle. They waited for seven hours in the San Francisco airport for another flight.
After reaching Seattle, just before 10 p.m., the Stars realized the car rental agency was closing. They eventually got rolling and drove to the Vancouver border crossing, and finally arrived in Kamloops about 8 a.m. on Thursday (July 10).
Deutschman was obviously frustrated by the extended journey, but remained confident in that he brought a more veteran team in tow. A year ago, a younger band of Stars went two and out in Kamloops.
The Stars erupted for 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to overtake the Merchants at NorBrock Stadium.
Barona will meet the defending tournament-champion Seattle Studs in Saturday's (July 12) second round at 9 p.m. Seattle clipped the Kirkland (Wash.) Kodiaks, 5-3 in the opening round.
After the Merchants took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st, the Stars answered in the bottom of the inning with aggressive base running. JONATHAN RAMIREZ led off with a walk and stole second. MARK OKANO singled and, with Ramirez on third, stole second. Ramirez scored on an ELIOT JOYNER groundout.
The Stars took a 2-1 lead in the 3rd inning. Ramirez singled, advanced to second on Okano's sacrifice, stole third and scored on Barreras' base hit.at third, was 1-for-2 with two RBI. Each had two stolen bases.
BRIAN ROSE went the distance for the Stars.

ESCONDIDO - Former Grossmont College standout DAVID JOLLIFF (El Capitan HS/Grossmont College) slugged two home runs to cash in three runs and then made a game-saving catch on defense to save the North County Waves' 8-6 victory over the Barona Stars on Saturday (June 14) at Escondido High School.
MIKE BUTTERFIELD (Mount Miguel HS/Southwestern CC) blasted a grand slam to give the Stars (2-3) a 6-4 lead in the 4th inning, but that's where the Stars' offense stalled.
ERIC BARLOW (El Capitan HS/Grossmont College) was 3-for-3 with one RBI for the Stars.
No report on the second game.

BARONA TACKLE BIG HORNS FOR THIRD-STRAIGHT WIN
EastCountySports.com staff report
LAKESIDE - This year's edition of the Barona
Stars seems to have taken on a
more traditional look than in past summers. MICKEY DEUTSCHMAN,
independent
owner and manager of the Santee-based Stars, has used pitching
and defense to
propel his Southern California Semi-Pro Wood Bat League ballclub
to a 3-game
winning streak. The Stars' latest conquest was a 3-1 victory over
the Las Vegas Big
Horns Wednesday (June 11) at Casino Diamond on the Barona Indian
Reservation.
The Stars (3-2) were an opportunistic bunch
in this one, scoring all of their
runs in the opening frame. ANTHONY FERNANDEZ walked and ERIC BARLOW
(El
Capitan HS/Grossmont College) was hit by a pitch. BRIAN HIPPS
(Grossmont College)
popped up, and the infield fly rule was called. However, the Las
Vegas second
baseman failed to make the catch, allowing both runners to advance
90 feet.
JEFF ST. PIERRE (Grossmont College) doubled
into the left field corner,
giving the Stars a 2-0 lead. SCOTT DEEN (El Capitan HS/Southwestern
CC) singled to
center, scoring St. Pierre.
Five Barona pitchers combined to make that
lead stand up. JOHNNY MAGBANUA, a
submarine right-hander, pitched 3 1/3 innings of hitless relief
to earn the
victory. MIKE BUTTERFIELD (Mount Miguel HS/Southwestern CC) pitched
a perfect
9th to log the save.
Given that Butterfield is an assistant coach
at Grossmont College with his
playing days supposedly behind him, Deutschman was somewhat amazed
by the ease
that the right-hander retired the first two Las Vegas batters.
So much so that
he called time out and had one his players rush a cold drink of
water to the
mound. Obviously surprised by the move Butterfield, glared into
the dugout in
Mike Fetters-fashion and proceeded to retire the final batter
to save the
victory.

MATT WESTRICH'S two-run triple broke a 3-3 tie in the 7th inning and the Stars (2-2) continued on for the victory.
Fox allowed only one earned run in 7 2/3 as he collected his second win in as many decisions.
JOE UNDERWOOD accounted for three of Barona's 10 hits.

BARONA - The Barona Stars (1-2), a semi-profressional wood bat baseball team based in Santee, won their first home game of the summer season with an 11-4 victory over the Southern California Giants (0-1) of the San Diego Prospects League Sunday (June 8) at Casino Diamond.
ERIC BARLOW drove in two runs with a double and a single, while MARIO KNORR was 2-for-2 with two runs scored to pace the Stars. BRYAN FOX pitched 4 shutout innings and GILBERT BREWER fired three blanks at the Giants.
QUINITIN BERRY was 3-for-5 and ROBBY SCOTT
was 2-for-5 with 2 RBI to pace the Giants.

EastCountySports.com staff report
SAN BERNARDINO - It hasn't been the best of summer seasons for coach Mickey Deutschman and his Barona Stars. No question the growth of the independent professional minor league system has taken its toll on semi-pro clubs such as the Stars. Marginal players with previous pro experience are now gaining their so-called second chance within the five major independent circuits that include 52 franchises nationwide.
Nevertheless, Deutschman, a skillful promoter, continues to put a competitive team on the field, the majority of the players claiming San Diego County ties.
The Stars enjoyed, perhaps, their finest day of the 2002 season when they swept a Western Wood Bat League double-header from the host Inland Empire Rockets 8-7 and 5-3 on Saturday (July 20) at Fiscalini Field.
Danie Miramontes broke a 5-5 tie with a RBI double in the in 7th inning of Saturday's first game against the Rockets, coached by former major league infielder Derrel Thomas. Reliever Mike Butterfield (Mount Miguel HS/Southwestern JC) picked up his first win of the season after allowing two earned runs in four innings. He struck out 4 and walked none.
The Stars' Troy Perdue (Monte Vista HS/San Diego State) broke a 3-3 tie in the nightcap with a two-run single in the 9th inning.
Daron Roberts, the son of the former Padres
standout Dave Roberts, went 5-for-7 in the two games, driving
in 3 runs and scoring one. The younger Roberts, an outfielder,
plans to play at Grossmont College next season.

NBC Western Regional Qualifying Tournament
Stars aren't aligned for run at NBC tournament
By Chris Davis
Special to Eastcountysports.com
LAKESIDE - After winning their tournament opener, the Barona Stars turned out to be generous hosts in the National Baseball Congress Western Regional Tournament at Casino Diamond this week.
STARS 2, LAS VEGAS METS 1 - TONY TARANTINO (Patrick Henry HS) pitched seven-plus strong innings to pick up the win in the opening round Thursday (July 4). Tarantino (2-3) scattered six hits and allowed only one run, while striking out 8.
WILL MILLER (University of Arizona) shut down the Mets for the final six outs for his first save of the year.
LARRY WATKINS, the Stars lead-off man, scored both Barona runs in the game. In the first inning he walked and reached second on an error. J.P. Paluck (San Diego City College) singled to left to load the bases for Eric Barlow. As Barlow grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, Watkins scored to give the Stars a 1-0 lead.
The Mets pulled even on four consecutive singles in the 5th inning.
The Stars scored the game winner in the 8th. Watkins reached base after a strike out/passed ball situation. He advanced to second on an error by the catcher, and was driven in by Paluck's single to right.
DAY 2:
SAN FRANCISCO ANGELS 8, STARS 4 -
In day two (Friday, July 5) of the four-day event, the Angels
knocked Stars' starter Ruben Aguilera out of the game by scoring
four runs in the 6th inning to take a 5-3 lead. The Bay Area club
tacked on an additional three runs in the 7th to secure the win.
The Stars got on the board first in the top of the third inning. Jake Bowen reached via a single and was advanced to second base by an Eric Barlow sacrifice bunt. Ramsey Ochoa singled through the left side to score Bowen.
An inning later, the Stars got another run when Chris Tallman singled in J.P. Paluck.
The Angels got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Colin Stewart walked and stole second. An errant pick-off attempt at second by pitcher Aguilera when he tried to catch Stewart napping got away, and Stewart advanced to third. After a line-drive out to first, Stewart scored on a groundout by catcher Brian Stewart.
In the top of the sixth, the Stars loaded the bases after a Paluck single, a sacrifice bunt by Mike Butterfield, an intentional walk to Matt Castillo, and a single to left from Tallman. Bowen grounded out to second to bring in Paluck, but that's all the damage Barona could generate.
ONTARIO HURRICANES 8, STARS 5 - The Barona bunch ended their run at the 2002 NBC Western Regional qualifying tournament title with this loss. The Stars (10-21) led 4-3 at one point in the game, but were outscored in the final half of the game 5-1.
ON THE HORIZON. . . The Stars will next be in action on Tuesday (July
9) in Kelowna, British Columbia, when they face the Kelowna Falcons
in a two-game set. They will then travel 96 kilometers to vie
in the Kamloops (B.C.) International Baseball Tournament (KIBT).

Barona hosts NBC Western Regional qualifier
By Chris Davis

SPRING VALLEY - The San Diego Barona Stars (9-19) have at least one good thing going for them this weekend at the National Baseball Congress Western Regional Qualifying Tournament - they will have the home field advantage. They are hosting the tournament at Casino Diamond.
The Stars also will ride the momentum of an 11-1 victory over the San Diego Marines (9-8), which they posted on Tuesday (July 2) at Mount Miguel High School.
The Stars welcomed back a former Star, and greeted a new Star at the game. The new Star is San Diego City College alum J.P. Paluck, who made a huge mark in his 2002 debut by going 4-for-4, scoring a run and driving in another. The returnee, Gavin Bangs, wasn't as fortunate as he went 0-3 with a run scored.
The Stars used a variety of pitchers in preparation for this weekend's tournament. Jake Bowen (2-1) picked up the win after going the first five innings. While on the mound Bowen allowed just one run (it was earned) and four hits, while striking out six. Following Bowen were Jon Stelly (one inning), Mike Jackson (one inning), Joe Pace (one inning), and Tony Tarantino (one inning). Each of the relief pitchers struck out at least one batter.
The Stars open the NBC Western Regional tournament on Thursday (July 4) at 1 p.m., when they face the Las Vegas Mets in the first round of the double-elimination tournament. The winner of that game will play the San Francisco Angels on Friday (July 5) at 10 a.m. at Casino Diamond.
The loser will play at 4 p.m. on July 5th, also at Barona.
Others in the 12-team tournament include the North County Waves, San Diego Mavericks, Inland Empire Rockets, Ontario Hurricanes, Southern California Fire, San Diego Marines, South Bay (Redondo Beach) Sharks, Las Vegas Big Horns, and JP Long Ball.
The tournament will run through Sunday (July
7), with the championship game set for 3:30 p.m. at Barona Casino
Diamond.

Stars trying to find groove in early season
By Chris Davis
Special to EastCountySports.com
The Barona Stars are having a hard time finding their groove this year. The Stars (6-9), usually a solid group of ball players that are among the front-runners in the Western Wood Bat Semi-Pro League, are struggling to get to the 500 mark.
On Saturday (June 15), the Stars thrashed the Ontario Hurricanes 10-1 at Casino Diamond. The Stars were led offensively by Matt Westrick (El Capitan/Grossmont College), who went 2-for-5, scored a run and drove in a run. Westrick's hits were a triple and a single.
The pitching star for the game was Mount Miguel High alum Mike Butterfield, who pitched five innings in relief, allowing one hit and one unearned run while striking out three. Butterfield picked up the win, as well.
The nightcap of what was supposed to be a double-header was not played because the Hurricanes left before the game could get underway, resulting in a forfeit victory for the Stars.
On Sunday (June 16) the Stars traveled to Hart Park in Orange County to face the Southern California Fire, where they dropped a doubleheader to the Fire. So much for a winning streak. (Scores were not reported.)
The Stars take Monday and Tuesday off before taking on JP Long Ball on Wednesday (June 19) and the Mavericks on Thursday (June 20). Both are single games scheduled for Casino Diamond on the Barona Indian Reservation
STAR SHOTS: Billy Zbacnik has left the team
after only two weeks. In the two weeks Zbacnik was in three games
with a 2.70 ERA in 3 1/3 innings.

Slumping Stars lose again to Mavericks

SAN DIEGO - The Barona Stars (4-7) lost their third in a row on Thursday (June 13), falling to the San Diego Mavericks 12-7 in a Western Semi-Pro Wood Bat League game. It was their second loss in as many chances against the Mavericks.
The Stars were held in check until the 3rd inning when the bats briefly came to life.
Chris Tallman (UCSD) led things off with a single to right. After a hit batsman and a single to center by Jake Bowen loaded the bases, Matt Castillo (Southwestern College) hit a bases clearing double down the right field line.
Erik Jorgenson (USD) drove in Castillo on a single to left-center.
The Stars' pitching medal of honor went
to reliever Mike Butterfield (Southwestern CC) who came on in
the 1st and left five innings later.
Butterfield struck out eight batters while walking only one -
not bad for a guy who specializes as a catcher.
The Stars hope to snap their mini-skid Saturday (June 15) when they host the Ontario Hurricanes at Casino Diamond on the Barona Indian Reservation in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. On Sunday, the Stars travel to Hart Park in Anaheim to take on the Southern California Fire.
The Stars are 2-0 so far this season against
the Hurricanes, and 0-2 against the Fire.

SAN DIEGO - The Barona Stars, who are in their 19th season, slipped below the .500 mark Tuesday (June 11) when they dropped a 7-5 Western Wood-Bat League decision to the San Diego Mavericks at Aliant International University.
The Stars (4-5) rallied from a 4-0 deficit
with 4 runs in the second inning, but then fell apart offensively.
The Mavericks regained the lead with a run
in the bottom of the second, tacked on 2 more runs in the sixth
and cruised home with the victory.
Eric Barlow, Troy Perdue and Ian Rand clubbed
doubles for the Stars, who also received 2 1/3 innings of shutout
relief from Tony Tarantino.

GRAND FORKS, British Columbia - It appeared
at the outset that the Barona
Stars were going to roll into the semifinals of the 2001 Grand
Forks
International baseball tournament with ease.
The Stars, who had beaten the New York City
Storm 3-0 in the final pool play
game two days earlier, jumped in front 3-0 after the opening inning
of
Sunday's (Sept. 2) quarterfinal money round, but fell 11-5 and
thus were
eliminated.
The Stars, who breezed to three straight
victories, watched as the Storm
thundered to a six-run second inning, and continued on to the
easy victory.
Barona's ROBERT MENDEZ smashed a two-run
homer in the bottom of the fifth,
but it was far too late as the Stars trailed by six.
Unlike the first three games, when Barona
received superb pitching, the
Stars' staff faltered from the second inning on.
Barona's season isn't over yet. The Peoples'
Republic of China,
represented by the Chinese national champions from Tianjin City,
have requested to play the Stars on Tuesday (Sept. 11) in San
Diego at a site
to be determined.
The two teams met during the Grand Forks
tournament, with Barona prevailing
9-1.

GRAND FORKS, British Columbia - The Barona
Stars completed a three-game sweep of Division III in the 2001
Grand Forks International tournament on Friday
(Aug. 31) when they blanked the New York City Storm 3-0.
Rubin Aguilera pitched the shutout, scattering
seven hits while striking out
five.
The Stars scored all the runs they would
need in the first inning. Oscar
Barreres doubled and scored on a double by Roberto Mendez. Cole
Holland then
brought in Mendez with a single to make it 2-0.
Barona scored the final run of the game
in the fourth inning as Holland
singled, stole second, and scored on a base hit by Carlos Quinones.
The Stars advance to the money round, which
includes eight of the original 16
teams in the tournament. Play for bucks begins on Sunday (Sept.
2).

EastCountySports.com staff report
GRAND FORKS, British Columbia - Retooling
his lineup with a few familiar
veterans, Mickey Deutschman has his Barona Stars back on the winning
track
again.
After concluding a disastrous summer season
in the Western Wood Bat League
while attempting to break in a younger lineup, Deutschman was
all smiles
following Thursday's (Aug. 30) opening rounds of pool play at
the 2001 Grand
Forks International.
Led by former Helix High/Grossmont College
slugger Cole Holland, the Stars
clipped Team Canada 5-2 and the Peoples' Republic of China national
champions
from Tianjin City, 9-1.
If the Stars defeat the New York City Storm
Friday (Aug. 31) at 5:30 p.m. to
sweep their pool, they'll clinch a berth in the money round, which
begins
Sunday (Sept. 2).
Holland hammered a home run and drove in
a second run with a sacrifice fly to
support an overpowering pitching performance by Will Flynt in
the win over
Team Canada. Flynt, who only last week had been pitching for Saltillo
in the
AAA Mexican League playoffs, answered Deutschman's call and joined
the Stars'
excursion North. The hard-throwing left-hander, who has pitched
for the Stars
in the past, twirled a three-hitter and struck out eight in seven
innings.
Garry Templeton (Poway High) smacked a two-run homer against Team Canada.
The Stars put together a seven-run fourth
inning to overcome a 1-0 deficit to
beat the Chinese. Roberto Mendez and Holland launched the assault
with
back-to-back home runs. But it was Oscar Barreres' grand slam
that sealed the
deal. Josh Pascarella picked up the win, scattering four hits
over seven
innings while striking out seven.

EastCountySports.com staff report
LAKESIDE - Josh Pascarella, the workhorse
pitcher who carried the Barona
Stars to the National Baseball Congress World Series last summer
in Wichita
(Kan.), returned to Casino Diamond on Wednesday (July 18).
The seemingly tireless right-hander wasn't
at the top of his game, as the
slumping Stars succumbed to the visiting Santa Barbara Forresters
6-4 in a
non-league encounter.
A onetime farmhand in the Houston Astros
system, Pascarella signed with the
Long Beach Breakers of the independent Western League following
the 2000 NBC
season. However, the product of Rancho Bernardo High and Palomar
College
struggled at Long Beach and subsequently was released.
Although Pascarella was pinned with the
loss as he permitted six hits and
four earned runs in six innings in his return to the Stars (12-22-1),
Barona
coach Mickey Deutschman is pleased to have the veteran pitcher
back on his
staff.
After all, Pascarella was one of the standout
pitchers at the NBC World
Series a year ago, as the Stars were involved in four one-run
games.
Pascarella pitched the Stars to complete game victories of 2-1
over Elkhart
(Kan.) and 7-6 over Cape Girardeau (Mo.) while striking out 20
in 19 innings.
The Stars then suffered back-to-back losses to NBC champion Liberal
(Kan.)
6-5 and El Dorado (Kan.) 5-4.
The Stars gave Pascarella a 1-0 lead over
the Forresters in the second inning
as Troy Perdue doubled and scored on Jake Bowen's triple.
But Santa Barbara (36-5), an early favorite
for the 2001 NBC World Series
title, fought back to take a 2-1 lead on a two-run single by LSU's
Sean
Barker in the fourth inning.
The Forresters padded their lead in the
fifth inning, thanks to a little bit
of luck. Ryan Owen (Wichita State) walked and advanced to third
as Jack
Headley reached base on Barona's only error of the game. Ryan
Haag (CSU
Northridge) singled in Owen to make it 3-1.
Delwyn Young (Riverside CC) lined a shot
to right-center that took a bad hop
over the Stars' Kyle Eazor, and rolled to the fence for a two-run
triple.
In the seventh, the Stars shaved the deficit
to 5-3 with the assistance of
four walks courtesy of the Forresters' relievers, who picked up
for starter
Greg Ramirez (5-0). A 6-foot-4, 205-pound right-hander out of
Pepperdine,
Ramirez allowed only one run and 5 hits over six innings.
Reliever James Carroll (Pepperdine) finally
restored order for the Forresters
in the seventh as he retired all three batters he faced to strand
the tying
runs at second and third.
Manny Lutz pulled Barona to 5-4 with a solo
home run in the eighth, but Santa
Barbara countered with a solo shot from Owen in the ninth.
The Stars, who are 7-7-1 in the Western
Wood Bat League, have an outside
chance of winning their league with seven games remaining. The
uphill climb
begins on Saturday (July 21) at Casino Diamond when they host
the Tucson,
Ariz. Javelinas at 1 p.m.

KAMLOOPS, British Columbia - The Barona
Stars' Canadian adventure came to an
abrupt conclusion on Friday the 13th (of July). It's not like
they walked
under any ladders or broke any mirrors. Their luck has simply
run that way
most of the summer.
The Seattle Cruisers sent the Stars packing
with a resounding 10-0 defeat in
the third round of the 29th annual Kamloops International Baseball
Tournament. It was Barona's third loss in as many games against
the Cruisers,
and the eighth loss in the last nine starts for the Stars (12-21-1).
Next up for Barona is a non-league encounter
against the Santa Barbara
Forresters - another perennial semi-pro baseball power - on Wednesday
(July
18) at Casino Diamond on the Barona Indian Reservation at 5:30
p.m.
(07-13-01)
EastCountySports.com staff report
KAMLOOPS, British Columbia - In order to
snap a six-game losing streak, the
Barona Stars went to Canada.
In Wednesday's (July 11) opening round of
the 29th annual Kamloops
International Baseball Tournament, the Stars decked Gray Harbor
(Wash.) 10-0
at Norbrook Stadium.
Ruben Aguilera, who has pitched for the
Stars in summers gone by, made his
2001 debut and fired a 3-hit shutout. The native of Mexico walked
three and
struck out eight in a game that was called after six innings due
to the
10-run mercy rule.
Larry Watkins brought the game to a halt
when he whacked a 2-run home run to
extend the Stars' advantage to 10-0. Mike Butterfield also homered,
earlier
in the game. The two circuit blasts raised Barona's paltry home
run total to
seven in 33 games.
In round two on Thursday (July 12), Barona
was the victim of a 10-0 knockout,
administered by the Seattle Studs.
Fortunately for Mickey Deutchman's gang,
this is a double-elimination
tournament. The bad news is, Friday the 13th the Stars are lined
up against
the Seattle Cruisers, a team that swept a twinbill from Barona
at Casino
Diamond on June 29.
Despite seeing his team lose 12 of its last
16 games, Deutchman is
disappointed but not surprised that his ballclub has struggled
to a 12-20-1
record.
"I don't think 'rebuilding' is the
right word to describe what we've tried to
do this season," Deutchman said. "It's been more of
a 'renewing' year. We
have a young ballclub that is just learning how to use wood bats."
In other words, Deutchman, who have been
known for recycling a blend of
ex-pros and older college players, is taking on a youth movement,
of sorts.
"It's going to take awhile to get the
word out that we're looking to play
more young guys on our team than we've ever played before,"
the veteran coach
said. "In the meantime, we're going to take our lumps."
Although the Stars' chances of winning the
Kamloops Tournament are fading,
Deutchman is quick to note that his 1996 and 1999 teams came from
behind to
capture the championship after losing in the first round.
"If we can beat the Cruisers, we'll
have a chance," he said. "Of course, we'd
have to win a tripleheader on Sunday (July 15), but we've done
that two times
in the past."

EastCountySports.com staff report
LAKESIDE - It doesn't seem to be getting
any better for the Barona Stars. In
what rapidly is becoming the forgettable summer of 2001, the Stars
added
ejections to insult on Sunday (July 8) at Casino Diamond as they
were
eliminated from title consideration in the National Baseball Congress
Western
Qualifying Tournament.
Despite one of their top offensive outputs
of the season, the Stars suffered
a 12-10 loss to the San Diego Mavericks in a game that included
a bench
clearing brawl. It was the second time in three days that the
Stars had gone
12 innings before being tagged with a defeat. Tempers were reaching
the
boiling point and the mercury was following suit.
The Stars not only blew a 10-7 lead with
two outs and nobody on in the top of
the ninth, they had six players kicked out after engaging the
Mavericks in a
10-minute free-for-all altercation in the bottom of the ninth
with the score
tied 10-10. Three members of the Mavericks' cast were also dismissed
from
the proceedings by the time umpires Pete Lopez and Jeff Hendrichs
were able
to restore order.
The brawl broke out after Barona's Kyle
Eazor attempted to break up a double
play with an aggressive slide into second base that caught a piece
of
Mavericks' shortstop Drew Phillips. A shoving match quickly escalated
into a
fist-flying exchange. And that, of course, brought additional
combatants from
both dugouts.
What hurt the Stars more than the fight,
however, was the manner in which
they found a way to lose another game (and probably along with
it any hope
they had of gaining an at-large berth to the prestigious NBC World
Series
next month in Wichita, Kansas).
Barona reliever Paul Carter retired the
first two batters he faced on fly
balls in the top of the ninth, leaving the Stars one out away
from keeping
their Wichita hopes alive. Carter then lost his focus on the plate
and
back-to-back walks led Stars' skipper Mickey Deutschman to summoned
Mike
Miller to the mound. Miller hit Tobias Herrera with his second
pitch to load
the bases, bringing the potential winning run to the plate.
Pat Reilly stroked a two-run single, slicing
the Stars lead to 10-9. Gilbert
Rojas followed with a double into the right-field corner, driving
in the
tying run. But the Mavs tried for the go-ahead run on Rojas' blow.
However, a
strong relay from Stars' right fielder Eazor to second baseman
Mario Knorr,
who wheeled and fired a strike to catcher Troy Perdue, nailed
Reilly at the
plate to snuff out the Mavericks' miracle rally.
The Stars, who were on the short end of
a 6-3 score to the Mavericks after
five innings when darkness suspended play on Saturday (July 7),
somehow
generated momentum when play resumed in the sixth inning Sunday.
Brian
Terrell singled and Tony Tarantino pinch ran for him. Tarantino
bolted to
third when Eazor singled, and scored on Perdue's sacrifice fly.
Barona, not known for its big innings this
summer, pushed across a five-spot
in the seventh inning. Manny Lutz and Chris Tallman slugged RBI
singles to
tie the game 6-6. Barona sneaked in front when Perdue was hit
by a pitch with
the bases loaded. Chris Drake then doubled into the left field
corner to
chase home two runs, giving the Stars a 9-6 advantage.
Even after the Mavericks pecked away for
a run in the top of the eighth on
Dan Rivas' RBI double, the Stars countered in the bottom of the
eighth on
Lutz' RBI single.
Nevertheless, the Stars managed to find
a way to lose as the Mavericks staged
two-out rallies in the ninth and 12th innings.
Despite all of the energy spent, neither
team was around when the
championship game was played. That trophy battle between the North
County
Waves and Orange County Scorpions was halted by darkness after
nine with the
score knotted at 3-3. The game will be resumed at a site to be
determined
later this summer.
The Stars (11-19-1) have submitted to six straight losses and
11 setbacks in
their last 14 starts. They'll test international waters this week
when they
take part in the annual Kamloops (B.C.) International Baseball
Tournament in
Canada. The Stars are matched against Grays Harbor (Wash.) in
Tuesday's (July
10) opening round at 5:30 p.m.

LAKESIDE - The Barona Stars are on the brink
of being eliminated from the
National Baseball Congress Western Qualifying Tournament.
Barona (11-18-1 overall) is 0-2 in the tournament
after falling to the North
County Waves 4-3 in 12 innings on Saturday (July 7) at Casino
Diamond on the
Barona Indian Reservation. Later that evening, when play was halted
by
darkness, the Stars were on the short end of a 6-3 score to the
San Diego
Mavericks after five innings.
That game will be resumed at 10 a.m. on
Sunday (July 8). If the Stars do not
come back and win that game, the best they can hope for is an
at-large berth
to the annual NBC World Series next month in Wichita. Based on
their
performance of late, such a bid is not likely to be forthcoming.
The Stars wasted another fine pitching performance
by Billy Zbacnik, who
allowed only 2 earned runs while striking out 10 in nine innings.
Matching
him pitch-for-pitch was North County's Eric Human, who rationed
Barona to 2
runs and 8 hits over 10 innings.
The Waves (19-15) scored the winning run
on Nick Covarrubias' bases-loaded
single with one out in the bottom of the 12th.
Barona, which has struggled offensively
most of the summer, was limited to 2
hits over the final six innings. Both safeties belonged to Brian
Sos, who
doubled in the 7th and singled in the 10th. Sos also drove in
Barona's second
run on a groundout in the 3rd inning.
Shoddy defense put the Stars in the hole
in the second game against the
Mavericks. Five Barona boots added up to 4 unearned runs for the
Mavericks
before play was suspended after five innings.
The Stars overcame an early 1-0 deficit
on an RBI single by Kyle Eazor in the
2nd inning, and then forged in front on Gavin Bangs' run-scoring
single in
the 3rd. Manny Lutz also had an RBI single in the 5th, which -
at the time -
shaved the Mavericks' advantage to 6-3.

LAKESIDE - If the Barona Stars are going
to win the National Baseball
Congress Western Qualifying Tournament, they'll have to do it
the hard way.
Coach Mickey Deutschman's Stars lost 6-4
in their opening round game to the
Orange County Scorpions (17-4) on Friday (July 6) at Casino Diamond
on the
Barona Indian Reservation.
The Stars (11-17-1), who host the North
County Waves at 1 p.m. on Saturday
(July 7), and the San Diego Mavericks at 5 p.m. the same day,
could not hold
leads of 2-1 and 4-3 over the Scorpions.
After falling behind 1-0, the Stars took
a 2-1 lead in the 3rd inning. Gavin
Bangs was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on Rielly Embrey's
sacrifice
bunt, and scored on Brian Sos' single to left center. Sos scored
the go-ahead
run when Manny Lutz doubled into the right-field corner with two
outs.
The Scorpions regained the lead in the bottom
of the 3rd when Rob Zboril
hammered a two-run home run over the center-field fence.
The Stars fought back in the top of the
7th when Jake Bowen ignited a one-out
rally with a single to right. Bangs followed with a triple into
the
left-field corner to score Bowen, tying the game 3-3. One out
later, Sos
lined a single to left field to score Bangs with the go-ahead
run.
Once again Orange County counter-punched in the bottom of the inning.
Josh Whitesell's RBI single tied the game
4-4. A Stars throwing error handed
the Scorpions what proved to be the winning run, and Chad Chop
- a former San
Diego State player - singled to right center to drive in an insurance

LA JOLLA - The Barona Stars were one strike
away from beating the San Diego
Mavericks for the third time this summer on Tuesday (July 3) at
UCSD. But the
Stars could not convert a routine ground ball on an 0-2 pitch
into a
victory-clinching out.
The Mavericks (13-9-1, 9-4-1) scored two
unearned runs on one hit in the
bottom of the 9th to hand the Stars a 5-4 Western Wood Bat League
loss.
The loss - the fifth in the last seven games
for Barona - left the Stars
(11-16-1, 7-7-1) on the brink of not qualifying for the coveted
National
Baseball Congress World Series next month in Wichita (Kan.).
Barona's best bet for securing a berth in
the national tourney will come this
weekend (July 6, 7, 8) when the Stars battle their league rivals
the Orange
County Scorpions, the North County Waves, and the Mavericks in
the NBC
Western Regional Qualifying Tournament at Casino Diamond and Escondido
High
School.
The double-elimination tournament will open
on Friday when the Stars host the
Scorpions at Casino Diamond at 4 p.m. The Stars will entertain
the Waves on
Saturday at 1 p.m., and the Mavericks at 5 p.m. the same day.
A three-game
sweep would assure Barona of a berth in the championship game
on Sunday at 5
p.m.
Should the Stars reach their destination,
credit would most likely rest with
their pitching staff. That has been their strongest suit. This
is a team that
has been so-so on defense and a club that lacks genuine power.
The epitome of the Stars' season was their
latest endeavor against the
Mavericks on Tuesday (July 3). Pitchers John Dobyns and Paul Carter
scattered
nine hits, but were victimized by two errors that handed the Mavericks
four
unearned runs.

MISSION VIEJO - The Barona Stars' chances
of winning the Western Semi-Pro
Wood Bat League championship were dealt a severe blow on Sunday
(July 1) when
the Orange County Scorpions swept them in a doubleheader 8-2 and
3-2 (15
innings) at Saddleback College.
The double defeat dropped the Stars' record
to 10-6-1 in league and 11-15-1
overall.
Lost in the shuffle was a brilliant pitching
performance by the Stars' JOHN
BEAVEN, who pitched five perfect innings and toiled a total of
11 frames
before leaving the nightcap tied 2-2. CHRIS GUNNETT pitched three
shutout
innings in relief before JOHN DOBYNS gave up the winning run in
the bottom of
the 15th.
The Stars will face the San Diego Mavericks
on Tuesday (July 3) at UCSD. Game
time is 5 p.m.
No details or boxscores were reported by

their best for Western
Semi-Professional Wood Bat Baseball League opponents. In their
latest
outing, the Stars swept a doubleheader from the visiting Ontario
Hurricanes
on Saturday (June 30) at Casino Diamond on the Barona Indian Reservation.
It
was Barona's first sweep in seven doubleheaders this summer.
Although no individual details were reported,
the Stars did improve their
league record to 10-4-1. They are 11-13-1 overall. Barona travels
to
Saddleback College in Mission Viejo to meet the Orange County
Scorpions in a
WSPBL twinbill on Sunday (July 1). First pitch is at noon. The
teams split a
doubleheader earlier this summer, the Stars losing 12-5 in the
first game
before winning the nightcap, 10-5.
On Tuesday (July 3), the Stars travel to
UCSD to face the San Diego Mavericks
at 5:30 p.m. league contest before hosting the NBC Western Region

LAKESIDE - It was an ugly afternoon for
the Barona Stars, who proved to be
gracious hosts as they dropped both ends of a non-league double-header
to the
visiting Seattle Cruisers 11-0 and 3-1 Friday (June 29) at Casino
Diamond.
It was more than hot weather that caused
the Stars to melt in the heat.
Bolstered by a roster than included several players from the University
of
Washington, the Cruisers smothered the Stars from the get-go,
as they scored
8 runs in opening inning of the first game. Ten Seattle batters
came to the
plate before the Stars recorded their first out.
For the first game, Seattle's offensive
line read: 11 runs on 10 hits. The
Stars contributed 4 walks, 6 hit batters and 2 errors.
Jared Carvalho, a product of the University
of San Francisco, drove in 3 runs
with a pair of hits for Seattle (9-11). Lee Mezistrano of USC
clubbed a solo
home run and Washington's Brian Carter blanked the Stars on 2
hits over 6
innings.
Singles by Mario Knorr and Chris Drake accounted
for Barona's offense in the
first game.
In the nightcap, the Stars had a significant
highlight as San Diego High alum
Eric Biddlecome, a junior-to-be at Cal State-Los Angeles, allowed
only 5 hits
and 1 earned run in 5 innings in his first semi-pro start. Biddlecome
earned
All-California Collegiate Athletic Association honors as a sophomore
at CSULA.
Barona took a 1-0 lead in the third inning
as Gavin Bangs walked, stole
second, advanced to third on Kyle Eazor's single and scored on
Chris
Tallman's groundout.
The Cruisers countered with 2 runs in the
fourth and added another in the
fifth to take the victory.
On Saturday (June 30) the Stars (9-13-1,
8-4-1) are scheduled to host the
Ontario Hurricanes in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Casino
Diamond on
the Barona Indian Reservation.

LAKESIDE - John Beaven and Chris Gunnett
combined to pitch Barona's second
consecutive three-hitter Thursday (June 28) as the Stars knocked
off the
visiting San Diego Mavericks 5-1 at Casino Diamond.
Beaven needed only 111 pitches to complete
eight innings, which included 7
strikeouts along the way. Gunnett fanned two batters in a scoreless
ninth.
"Our pitching has been pretty steady
all season," Stars' manager Mickey
Deutschman said. "But we've been spanking the ball pretty
well too. We're
putting the ball up against the fence a lot more often than we
were earlier
in the year. We're not out there just playing little ball."
Barona (9-11-1) improved its Western Semi-Pro
Wood Bat League record to 8-4-1
with a victory over the Mavericks (14-10-1, 6-3-1).
The Stars rallied from a 1-0 deficit with
3 runs in the fifth inning. Brian
Terrell ignited the rally with a double down the right field line.
He
advanced to third on Mario Knorr's base hit to left. When Knorr
broke for
second base to begin a delayed double steal, Mavericks' catcher
Paul Morales
airmailed the ball into center field. Terrell scored on the play
and Knorr
raced around to third.
Jake Bowen singled to score Knorr, giving
the Stars a 2-1 lead. After Bowen
stole second, Chris Tallman delivered a two-out RBI single.
In the bottom of the sixth, Kyle Eazor lined
a solo home run over the right
field fence, extending the Stars' advantage to 4-1. Eazor also
had a hand in
the final run of the game, as he followed Mike Butterfield's pinch-hit
double
with a run-scoring single in the eighth.
The Stars will step out of league activity
on Friday (June 29) when they host
the Seattle Cruisers in an unscheduled doubleheader beginning
at 3 p.m.
On Saturday (June 30) the Stars will host
the Ontario Hurricanes in a WSPBL
doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Casino Diamond on the Barona

POWAY - When it comes to pitching, Barona
Stars coach Mickey Deutschman likes
what he's seen from his 2001 ballclub.
Billy Zbacnik turned in what arguably is
the finest pitching performance of
the summer for the Stars as he blanked the host North County Waves
8-0 in
Tuesday's (June 26) Western Wood Bat League game at Poway High.
"This is what semiprofessional baseball
is all about," Deutschman said. "I
know for a fact that the Devil Rays and Atlanta are looking at
Billy now. If
he keeps pitching the way he has, I know we're going to lose him
(to a pro
contract)."
The 6-foot-4, 205-pound left-hander needed
only 118 pitches to complete a
3-hit shutout that included 12 strikeouts and just two walks as
he snapped
the Stars' six-game losing streak.
"That's the first time ever that Billy
has pitched nine innings," Deutschman
said. "Just an excellent, excellent job on his part. And
I can't forget
catcher Troy Perdue. He called the whole game. He and Billy were
in sync the
whole game."
Zbacnik lowered his ERA to 2.48 ERA (for
29 innings) as he notched his second
win without a loss. He authored Barona's first shutout of the
season.
Led by the pitching of Zbacnik and a grand
slam home run by UCSD product
Chris Tallman, the Stars (8-11-1 overall) improved their league
record to
7-4-1.
"I can't emphasize enough how the trip
to Santa Maria helped bring this
ballclub together," Deutschman said. "The game we played
against the Waves
was the direct result of the experience we gained in Santa Maria.
Our
ballclub played an extremely sound game."
The Stars broke a scoreless tie in the fourth
inning as Tallman was hit by a
pitch and scored on Perdue's double into the gap in right-center
field. When
the Waves' center fielder heaved his relay throw into the North
County
dugout, Perdue was able to circle the bases for a 2-0 Barona lead.
In the fifth, Jake Bowen singled, Gavin
Bangs reached on an error and Mike
Butterfield was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs.
Tallman then
put the game out of reach with his third home run of the season.
For good measure, the Stars added a pair
of runs in the ninth. Bowen walked
and scored on Mario Knorr's triple. Knorr cruised home on Bangs
groundout to
complete the scoring.
Barona entertains the San Diego Mavericks
on Thursday (June 28) at Casino
Diamond at 5 p.m. Plans were that the two clubs would resume a
suspended game
from June 7 at 4 p.m., but those plans have since been dashed
per the request
of the Mavericks. Thus, only the regularly scheduled game between
the two
clubs will be played.

SANTA MARIA - The Barona Stars were no doubt
glad to get out of town before
sundown on Sunday. They'd seen enough of the Santa Maria Indians,
a perennial
state power in semi-professional baseball circles.
"You never like to lose five in a row,"
said Barona coach Mickey Deutschman
after Santa Maria completed a five-game sweep of a weekend series
with
victories of 7-6 and 11-2 on Sunday (June 24) at Elks Field. "But
there were
a whole bunch of positives that came out of it. Overall, our boys
battled,
and were in four of those five ballgames. Last year we wouldn't
have kept
coming back like this team did, we would have just folded the
tents."
Deutschman was especially pleased with the Stars pitching.
"I think that's going to be the strong
part of our ballclub," he said. "Our
pitchers kept us in the games. We've got the right combination
going. We're
only three players away from being a really good team. We need
middle
infielders and one outfielder."
While the Stars are younger than they've
been in recent years, Santa Maria is
a veteran ballclub laden with Division I talent.
"They have some big name players, several
guys from Fresno State," Deutschman
said. "They started out with 60 guys and they still had 38
when they played
us this weekend."
The Stars (7-11-1), who banged out 13 hits,
rallied from a 4-1 deficit to
take a 6-4 lead in the sixth inning of Sunday's first game.
Four of those hits came in the fifth inning
with two outs as Barona closed
the gap to 4-3 on an RBI double by Kyle Eazor and a run-scoring
single by
Brian Terrell. Mike Butterfield just missed tying the game against
Indians
reliever Adam Varteressian when his grounder down the first base
line went
foul. Varteressian then retired Butterfield on a groundout.
In the sixth inning Santa Maria errors set
the stage for a three-run Stars'
rally. Manny Lutz eventually broke a 4-4 tie with a run-scoring
single, and
Eazor followed with his second RBI double to make it 6-4.
The Indians pulled to within 6-5 on Brian
Finegan's single in the sixth, and
then tied it in the seventh as Tom Creighton beat out a two-out
grounder to
shortstop and J.R. Cortez scored.
So after all that, the pitchers of record were 42-year old Dwayne
James -
Barona's pitching coach and the Stars' fourth pitcher of the game,
and Matt
Landeros, who graduated from Arroyo Grande High this spring and
came in as
Indians' pitcher No. 5.
Landeros became the winning pitcher and
James the loser when Cortez singled
home Brad Hertel in the bottom of the eighth. On the play before,
Stars
second baseman Mike Miller could not come up with Philip Archer's
grounder
that was a probable inning-ending double-play ball. James also
muffed a bunt
that added to the Stars' woes.
The Stars out-hit the Indians 13-10 in the
opener. Chris Tallman and Eazor
led the way with three hits apiece. Rielly Embrey was 2-for-5.
But five
Barona errors handed Santa Maria five unearned runs, and that
was the
difference.
The nightcap was close for five innings,
as Barona closed an early 3-0
deficit to 3-2. Then the Indians broke it open with eight runs
in the sixth.
Mario Knorr was 3-for-3 for the Stars, who
collected 10 hits in the loss.
Troy Perdue and Lutz were each 2-for-4. Lutz had an RBI, as did
Tony
Tarantino.
Indians starter, Mike Dorsa a redshirt from
San Jose State, went six innings
to get the win.
The Stars will play seven games this week
in addition to finishing up a game
suspended earlier this month due to darkness.
The marathon begins when Barona faces the
North County Waves on Tuesday (June
26) at Poway High at 7 p.m. On Thursday (June 28) the Stars return
to Casino
Diamond, and will resume the suspended game with the San Diego
Mavericks at 4
p.m. The teams will then play their regularly scheduled game,
immediately
following.
On Friday (June 29) the Seattle Cruisers
visit Casino Diamond for a single
game at 5:30 p.m.
Western Wood Bat League doubleheaders are
scheduled for Saturday and Sunday
(June 30 and July 1). (Details forthcoming.)

EastCountySports.com staff report
SANTA MARIA - The Barona Stars ran into
some of the best pitching they've
seen all season Saturday (June 23) at Elks Field, as they dropped
both ends
of a doubleheader 5-0 and 2-1 to the host Santa Maria Indians
(11-5).
Santa Maria has won three straight and six
of its last seven. The Stars
(7-9-1) have lost three straight and four of their last five.
Barona
concludes its weekend series with a doubleheader against the Indians
on
Sunday (June 24).
It was a tough afternoon for the Barona
hitters, who were limited to a total
of nine hits in the two seven-inning games. Manny Lutz and Rielly
Embrey each
had two hits.
Lutz had the only extra base hits for the
Stars, with a double in each game.
He also scored the only run when he doubled in the fourth inning
of the
second game, and scored on Chris Tallman's single.
Prior to the double defeat the Stars had
not scored fewer than three runs in
any of their first 15 outings.
In the first game Barona pitchers Paul Carter
and John Dobyns allowed eight
hits between them, but twice escaped bases-loaded situations or
the outcome
might have been even more one-sided.
Meanwhile Indians pitchers Chris Smith and
Tony Evans combined to check the
Stars on three hits while striking out seven and walking one.
Smith pitched
the first five innings and gave up just two hits to pick up the
win.
In the first game, the Stars never got a runner past second base.
Nick Garcia, who hit 14 home runs for Cal
State San Bernardino as a senior
this spring, and came to the Indians just this week, singled in
Santa Maria's
initial run in the first inning. He then lined Carter's first
pitch to him in
the third inning over the right field fence for a two-run home
run and a 3-0
lead. The ball hit the fence just inside the right field foul
pole. Garcia
drove in four of Santa Maria's five runs.
In the second game, the Stars' John Beaven
scattered six hits, allowed two
runs and struck out nine in a route-going performance, but still
came up
short.
Santa Maria scored both of its runs in the
second inning. Matt Creighton
singled, and then he and Hancock College graduate Jeff Crabtree
executed a
perfect hit-and-run. Crabtree hit the ball behind Creighton to
right field
and Creighton took third on the play.
Creighton scored on a groundout, and Crabtree
scored on a wild pitch.
(06-23-01)
SANTA MARIA - Santa Maria Indians designated
hitter Phillip Archer hit a high
bouncer toward second base in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday
night
(June 22) and ran for all he was worth. His effort paid off.
Archer easily beat Barona Stars second baseman
Mario Knorr's two-out throw to
first base and Matt Creighton scored from third with the winning
run as the
Indians edged the Stars 4-3 in the first of a five-game weekend
series at
Elks Field.
"It was in a good spot," Archer
said of his game-winning infield hit. "It was
hit slow enough. I thought it had a good chance."
Creighton got on first base on a one-out
bouncer that went over Barona third
baseman Manny Lutz's head. Then Tony Tarantino threw wildly trying
to pick
Creighton off, and Creighton took off for third base.
Creighton and the throw from Stars first
baseman Chris Tallman converged on
Lutz at the same time. Creighton was safe and Lutz wound up with
a bloody
nose. He was able to stay in the game, however.
"(Lutz) was standing in front of the
bag, so I really couldn't slide,"
Creighton said. "I was just trying to knock the ball loose."
Creighton has hit the ball hard for the
Indians, but all he has had to show
for it is an average just over .200. "I've hit some balls
well right at
people, so it felt good to get a cheap one," he said with
a grin.
"Matt Creighton has been hitting the
ball the best for us, and he's had
nothing to show for it," Indians manager Bobby Maitia said.
"We were talking
and decided that he'd give me a sign every time he got a cheap
hit. After
that one, he turned around at first base and gave me the sign
as if to say
"that's one.'"
Santa Maria improved to 9-5 on the year
and dropped Barona, a regular in the
National Baseball Congress national tourney, to 7-7-2. The teams
play
Saturday (June 23) in a doubleheader that starts at 5 p.m., then
in another
doubleheader Sunday (June 24) that begins at noon.
The Indians led 2-1 at the end of the first
inning, and the score stayed that
way for awhile. Creighton figured heavily with his glove as well
as his bat
and his hard-charging base running.
In the first inning, first baseman Creighton
dropped a one-out throw from
second baseman Alex Taylor and Gavin Bangs, who was headed toward
third base
on the play, scored as Creighton dropped the throw.
After Kyle Eazor's double, Santa Maria starting
pitcher Jared Silvera (one
unearned run on six hits in his six innings) escaped further damage
by
getting Ryan Reed to hit one back to him for the last out.
After J.R. Cortez and Brad Hertel put the
Indians ahead with run-scoring
singles in the first inning, Creighton made up for his error by
making a
diving stab of Knorr's two-out line drive in the fourth. Had the
ball gotten
through, Reed would have scored from third base.
Reed was on third base because of Cortez's
two errors in left field. Reed
took an extra base on his single after Cortez had trouble picking
up the
ball. Then Cortez made an errant throw back to the infield after
catching
Brian Terrell's drive, and Reed went to third base.
Barona tied the game at 2-2 in the seventh
on Larry Watkins' single. The
Indians went ahead 3-2 on Hertel's sacrifice fly in the bottom
of the inning
and then Barona tied it again on Indians reliever Matt Dolan's
wild pitch in
the eighth. Then came Archer's game-winning hustle hit in the
ninth.
The Indians overcame 11 stranded runners
and three errors. They won despite
being outhit 9-7 with help from four Barona errors and strong
pitching by
Silvera and Rich Cartier, who set the Stars down in order in his
one inning
of work, the ninth.
"This was a good win for us over a
tough team," said Maitia. "(Barona) goes
to the (National Baseball Congress) nationals every year. They're
a tough
team that is well-managed."

LAKESIDE - The Barona Stars scored three
runs in the bottom of the ninth
inning to log their most compelling victory of the season on Sunday
(June 17)
as they edged the visiting Ontario Hurricane 3-2 in a Western
Wood Bat League
game at Casino Diamond.
Troy Perdue capped the comeback with a line-drive
single to center field that
scored Ryan Reed with the winning run.
Mike Miller launched the winning rally with
a single to center. He stole
second and scored on a pinch-hit double by Larry Watkins. John
Dobyns ran for
Watkins. After Reed was hit by a pitch, Chris Drake singled to
center to
score Dobyns with the tying run.
That set the stage for Perdue's last-inning
heroics. The former Monte Vista
High/Grossmont College, and now San Diego State catcher has delivered
the
game-winning RBI in four of the Stars' seven victories.
Through the first seven innings, the Stars
were limited to singles by Rielly
Embrey and Billy Zbacnik. In the eighth inning, Drake and Mike
Butterfield
put together singles, but the Stars had to wait until the final
frame to dent
the scoreboard.
Tony Tarantino, the third Barona pitcher,
picked up the win as he blanked
Ontario (5-8) in the ninth inning while striking out two.
The Stars (7-6-1) travel to Santa Maria
this weekend (June 22-24) for a
five-game series against the Santa Maria Indians at Elks Field.

LAKESIDE - The Barona Stars unleashed perhaps
their finest offensive
onslaught of the summer when they outslugged the visiting San
Francisco
Angels 12-11 in the first game of a non-league double-header on
Saturday
(June 16) at Casino Diamond on the Barona Indian Reservation.
The Stars scored in seven of their eight
turns at bat to win the opener, but
dropped the nightcap 7-3 to the visitors from the Bay Area.
In Game 1, Rielly Embrey - who will be a
sophomore at San Diego State in the
fall - completed three-fourths of a cycle with a single, double
and triple
while driving in two runs and scoring two to pace the Stars' 15-hit
attack.
Chris Tallman belted a two-run homer in
the sixth inning, and singled and
scored in the fifth. But it was Joel Jerauld's two-run single
in the fifth
inning that gave the Stars an 8-7 lead they wouldn't lose.
Although it did not appear that pitching
was paramount, it was some nifty
relief work by Mike Miller that enabled the Stars to claim victory
in Game 1.
Miller, a product of El Capitan High, escaped bases-loaded jams
in the eighth
and ninth innings to record his first save of the season.
The Stars (6-6-1) snapped a 2-2 tie with
a four-run outburst after two outs
in the fourth inning. Ryan Reed and Larry Watkins contributed
RBI singles,
and Embrey capped the rally with a two-run double.
After the Angels countered with five runs
in the top of the fifth, the Stars
came back in the bottom of the inning. Tallman singled, Manny
Lutz walked,
and Mike Butterfield singled to load the bases. That set the stage
for what
proved to be the game-winning hit by Jerauld.
In the nightcap, the Stars erased a 3-0
deficit. Tony Tarantino tripled in
two runs in the fifth inning. In the sixth Butterfield doubled,
advanced to
third of Kyle Eazor's single, and scored on a throwing error to
pull the
Stars even at 3-3.
San Francisco (10-9) picked up a pair of
runs in the seventh to go ahead on a
single, a walk, a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch.
In the ninth inning, William Gomez clubbed
an inside-the-park home run with
Matt Suess aboard to seal the victory for the Angels.

LA JOLLA - It was a reunion day of sorts
for three members of the Barona
Stars semiprofessional baseball team Wednesday (June 13) at the
University of
California-San Diego's Tritons field.
Leading the triumphant return for the Stars
was UCSD pitcher John Beaven, who
spun 4 1/3 innings of perfect relief to earn the victory in the
visiting
Stars 5-1 Western Wood Bat League conquest of the San Diego Mavericks.
Beaven, the 6-foot-4, 205-pound right-hander
out of Sacramento, struck out
eight and walked one while earning his second win in as many decisions.
He
needed only 47 pitches - 32 of them strikes - to get the job done.
Beaven picked up for starter Billy Zbacnik,
who limited the Mavericks (5-5-1,
4-1-1) to one run and four hits over 4 2/3 innings.
Two other UCSD products made contributions to the Barona victory.
Six-foot-6, 230-pound Chris Tallman lined
a solo home run to right-center
field in the second inning. Steve Pelletier (Granite Hills HS/Grossmont
College) set up the final Barona run with a pinch hit single in
the ninth.
"This was a game we had to win,"
Barona coach Mickey Deutschmann said. "And
we came through with what was probably our best game of the summer.
We played
sound defense and got a great job from our pitchers. I thought
Troy Perdue
(Monte Vista HS/Grossmont College/SDSU) did a great job behind
the plate."
Perdue didn't do too badly with the bat,
either. He showed why he is Barona's
leading hitter when he slugged a two-run triple down the right
field line
giving the Stars a 2-0 edge in the first inning.
After Tallman hammered Barona's second home
run of the season in the second
inning, Pelletier singled to start the ninth in his first at-bat
of the
season. Mario Knorr ran for Pelletier and scored on Jake Bowen's
triple to
left center.
The Stars return home to host the San Francisco
Angels on Saturday (June 16)
in a nonleague doubleheader at Casino Diamond that begins at noon.
Due to a
scheduling change, Barona will also play at home on Sunday when
it entertains
the Ontario Hurricanes in a twinbill beginning at noon.

SAN DIEGO - The Barona Stars would be better
off showing up to play only the
second game of doubleheaders. When it comes to single games or
the first game
of twinbills, the Stars show a sorry record of 1-4-1.
In the second game of doubleheaders, however,
the Stars are 3-1. Could be
they just aren't early risers.
In their latest outing, the Stars split
a Western Semi-Pro Wood Bat League
doubleheader with the defending champion Orange County Scorpions
on Sunday
(June 10) at Casino Diamond, claiming a 10-5 victory in the nightcap
after
dropping a 12-5 decision in the opener.
For one of the few times this summer, the
Stars stormed out to an early lead
in Game 2. A two-run single by Chris Tallman gave Barona a 2-0
lead in the
first inning. The Stars extended their advantage to 5-0 in the
second as Mike
Butterfield belted an RBI double and then stole home after a run-scoring
single by Troy Perdue.
After the sting of a four-run third inning
by the Scorpions, the Stars
countered with a run in the bottom of that inning as Jake Bowen
tripled and
scored on Joel Jerauld's groundout.
Barona (4-5-1) broke the game open with
four runs in the bottom of the
seventh. Larry Watkins, Ryan Reed and Bowen drew consecutive bases-loaded
walks to produce three runs, and the Scorpions contributed an
error to give
Barona a fourth run.
The Stars' Mike Miller pitched three innings
of hitless relief as he blanked
the Scorpions down the stretch to earn his first victory of the
season. The
Barona defense supported him with inning-ending double plays in
the sixth and
seventh.
Former San Diego State standout and now
Vanguard University star, Chad Chop
went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI to pace Orange
County to its
first-game victory. After scoring five runs in the first five
innings, the
Stars failed to get a hit over the final 4-1/3 innings.
The Stars will resume play on Wednesday
(June 13) when they face the San
Diego Mavericks at UCSD at 5:30 p.m.
The San Francisco Angels will visit Casino
Diamond on Saturday (June 16) for
a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
The Stars will travel to Citrus College
for a twinbill against the Ontario
Hurricane on Sunday (June 17) at noon.

The Stars (3-4-1) scored five runs in the final two innings to gain the nod in the nightcap, which was called after seven innings due to darkness.
RBI doubles by Troy Perdue and Chris Tallman enabled the Stars to erase a 3-2 deficit in the sixth inning. Barona padded the advantage with three runs in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by Gavin Bangs, an error and a wild pitch.
The Marines capitalized on nine errors and six walks for 15 unearned runs to win the opener.

LAKESIDE - At this point in the National
Baseball Congress season, Barona
Stars coach Mickey Deutschman of Santee is still putting together
his team
for the 2001 summer session. Sometimes that means sacrificing
a chance to
win to discover new talent.
"I'm still looking, testing and evaluating,"
Deutschman said after the Stars
blew a 5-3 lead and succumbed to the visiting Aloha Knights of
Portland,
Oregon 6-5 on Thursday (June 7) at Casino Diamond. "We're
starting to come
together, but I still have 37 guys fighting for 25 spots."
Deutschman said he'll put the auditions
on hold this weekend as his Stars
(2-3-1) go for doubleheader sweeps against the San Diego Marines
on Saturday
(June 9) at USIU at 1 p.m. and the Orange County Scorpions on
Sunday (June
10) at Casino Diamond at noon.
"Those are (Western Semi-Pro Wood Bat)
League games, and we need to win all
four," the coach said. "We won't be doing much experimenting."
After falling behind the Knights 3-0, the
Stars batted a round and scored
five runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Singles by Brian Terrell, Troy Perdue and D'Angelo Scott produced
the first
run. A single by Ryan Reed loaded the bases, and one out later
Larry Watkins
cut the Knights' lead to 3-2 with a base hit.
The Stars tied the game on a throwing error
and then took the lead on Kyle
Eazor's two-run single. After that, the Barona offense went flat.
Aloha pitchers Matt Kosderka, Jared Powell
and Mike Gits blanked the Stars on
two hits over the final 7-1/3 innings. The trio combined for nine
strikeouts
and did not walk a man.
The Knights (5-1) forged in front with two
runs in the seventh. Jason Barrow
walked and scored on a double by Matt Allen to tie it 5-5. Travis
Hanson then
singled to score Allen with what proved to be the winning run.
"The Knights are in a transitional
period, like we are," Deutschman said.
"But I'll tell you this, we can play with them any day. We'll
get another
crack at them in the Kamloops (British Columbia) tournament in
July."
Gabe Roberti (West Hills/Grossmont College),
a 6-foot-6 right-hander,
survived one rocky inning and left with a 5-4 lead after a five-inning
stint.
But the Stars bullpen couldn't hold the lead.

LAKESIDE - You might say pinch-hitter Larry
Watkins helped shut out the
lights as his two-run homer in the eighth pulled the Barona Stars
even with
the San Diego Mavericks at 6-6 before darkness halted the proceedings
after
nine innings Tuesday (June 5) at Casino Diamond.
Watkins' blast followed a walk to Mario
Knorr, enabling the Stars to salvage
a tie for the time being. The Western Semi-Pro Woodbat League
game was
officially suspended and will be resumed on Thursday (June 28)
at 4 p.m.
prior to the regularly scheduled game between these two teams.
Barona will host one of its most prestigious
non-league opponents on Thursday
(June 7) when the Aloha Knights of Portland visit Casino Diamond
for a 5 p.m.
game. The Knights are sponsored by Nike founder Phil Knight and
possess one
of the largest budgets of any semi-pro team in the nation. And
where there's
money, there is talent.
Meanwhile, the Stars were breezing 4-1 behind
the strong pitching of Victor
Saldana, who limited the visiting Mavericks to three hits while
striking out
eight and walking none in 6 1/3 innings.
The Mavs capitalized on a walk, a hit batter,
an error, a single and a
two-run double by pinch-hitter Paul Macaluso, to chase Saldana
and shave
Barona's edge to 4-3 in the seventh.
A two-base throwing error plus an RBI double
by Tony Schroth plated three
more runs as the Mavericks captured a 6-4 lead in the eighth inning.
Barona had taken advantage of five walks,
a hit batter and an error to assume
a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Singles by Knorr and Gavin Bangs
plus an
outfield miscue by the Mavericks allowed the Stars to tack on
an unearned run
for a 4-1 lead in the fourth.

LAKESIDE - The semi-pro Barona Stars opened
the 2001 National Baseball
Congress season by splitting a pair of doubleheaders against the
San Diego
Marines and the Tucson (Ariz.) Javelinas on Saturday and Sunday
(June 2-3) at
Casino Diamond on the Barona Indian Reservation.
One of Barona's shining Stars was San Diego
State first baseman Rielly Embrey
(Poway HS), who went 5-for-15 with a double, 2 triples, 4 RBI
and 5 runs
scored as Barona defeated the Marines 6-4 in the season opener
and then
closed the weekend by nipping Tucson 9-8 on Sunday. In between,
the Stars
dropped the second game against the Marines 6-3, and fell to the
Javelinas
9-6 in Sunday's first game.
Barona will host the San Diego Mavericks
in a Western Semi-Pro Woodbat League
game on Tuesday (June 5) at 5:30 p.m. On Thursday (June 7), the
Stars will
entertain the Aloha Knights, a semi-pro powerhouse sponsored by
Nike out of
Portland (Ore.) at 5:30 p.m.
Chris Drake will be the starting pitcher
in Tuesday's game for the Stars, and
Gabe Roberti (West Hills HS/Grossmont College) will get the call
against
Aloha.
The Stars sent 11 batters to the plate during a six-run third
inning as they
opened the summer Western Woodbat League season with a victory
over the
Marines. Larry Watkins (Grossmont JC) started the rally with a
triple and
scored on a single by Manny Lutz (Monte Vista HS/Southwestern
JC).
Mike Butterfield (Mount Miguel HS/Southwestern)
followed with a base hit, and
Lutz scored on the play when the right-fielder misplayed the ball.
After Troy
Perdue (Monte Vista/Grossmont JC/SDSU) walked, Embrey tripled.
Jake Bowen
singled in Embrey.
Jonathan Stelley, a product of Southern
Louisiana University, pitched three
shutout innings in relief to save the first victory of 2001.
In the second game of Saturday's twinbill
against the Marines - a team
comprised of servicemen from Camp Pendleton, Miramar, and MCRD
- Lutz drove
in three runs with a single and a double, but it wasn't enough
to salvage a
victory for the Stars.
Against Tucson, the Stars took a 6-5 lead
in the eighth inning on an RBI
single by Jon Wagner and an RBI double by Watkins. The Stars'
comeback went
for naught as Tucson staged a two-out, four-run rally capped by
a three-run
homer by Chris Diblasi.
In Sunday's nightcap, Barona was led by
Embrey, who drove in two and scored
three runs with a double and a triple. Joel Jerauld (Helix HS/Southwestern),
Perdue, and Drake contributed two hits apiece in the victory.
But the big star of the show for Barona
was Stars' player/pitching coach
Duane James (Santana HS/Detroit Tigers), who limited Tucson to
one hit and
one run while striking out six over the final three innings to
garner the
victory.
The Stars scored five runs in the seventh
inning to erase a 7-4 deficit.
Jerauld had an RBI single in the inning that was aided greatly
by two Tucson
errors.

SANTEE - Mickey Deutschman will lead his
Barona Stars into their 18th season
this weekend when they host the U.S. Marines on Saturday (June
2) and the
Tucson (Ariz.) Javelinas on Sunday (June 3) at Casino Diamond
on the Barona
Indian Reservation. Both double-headers begin at noon.
To understand why Deutschman, an independent
businessman, continues to field
one of the top semi-professional baseball teams in the nation,
one needs only
to review the events leading up to last year's impromptu summer
finale.
Talk about love of the game - Deutschman could be the poster boy.
Frustrated after a sub-par 2000 regular
season, Deutschman had decided to
forego his annual trek to Wichita, Kansas where the elite meet
to determine a
national champion.
"My original team managed to qualify,
but wasn't dedicated enough for me to
put up the money to go to Wichita," Deutschman recalled.
"But the (National
Baseball Congress World Series) tournament director called and
told me we
couldn't back out because we were the No. 3 seed, and it would
foul up the
tournament pairings. So I got on the telephone and tried to put
together the
best team I could in 24 hours."
Making like a magician, Deutschman was successful
in corralling a quality
group, and then headed for the Plains.
The long-time manager of the Barona Stars
took his makeshift team and hit the
road, traveling 32 hours by motor home from San Diego to Wichita.
Due to unforeseen difficulties - a broken
radiator hose, a faulty alternator
plus a snapped fan belt - the Stars didn't arrive in Kansas until
a few
minutes after their scheduled starting time against the Elkhart
Dusters.
Because of the Stars' reputation, their
opening game was allowed a 90-minute
delay/grace period before the first pitch.
It was the motor home's 14th trip hauling
the Stars to Wichita. When the team
arrived Deutschman climbed out of the cab with greased-stained
arms, and
uttered something to the effect of "Play ball."
This is the stuff of which movies are made.
Deutschman is as good a mechanic as he is
a baseball coach. He's pretty good
with a cell phone, too.
NBC general manager Derik Dukes said he
received calls from Deutschman every
hour, beginning at 8:30 a.m. some 8 hours prior to gametime. "San
Diego
(Barona) has a great tradition with the NBC. We were going to
wait for them
to get here because we knew they'd make it," he said.
"Once we got everything fixed, we never
drove under 90 mph," Deutschman
recalled.
The Stars defeated Elkhart 2-1 that night,
and won Round 2 by knocking off
previously undefeated Cape Girardeau (Mo.) 7-6. Of course, that
second-round
victory did not come without a hitch.
Sometime in the wee hours following their
first-round victory, the Stars'
bats were stolen out of their RV in front of their hotel. They
had to beg,
borrow and buy bats to continue playing.
Barona was eventually eliminated by back-to-back
one-run losses to
traditional powers Liberal (Kan.) and El Dorado (Kan.), and settled
for an
11th-place finish in a 50-team tournament.
After last year's up-and-down regular season,
Deutschman has turned his focus
to a youth movement this summer, adding some quality young players
to his
roster. The majority have San Diego County ties.
Among those are former Pacific Coast Conference
Players of the Year - catcher
Mike Butterfield (Mount Miguel/Southwestern JC/LSU-Shreveport)
and second
baseman Mark Kiger (Grossmont JC/Florida). Other youthful nuggets
include
catcher Troy Perdue (Monte Vista/Grossmont JC/SDSU), catcher/outfielder
Ryan
Reed (Grossmont HS/Grossmont JC), first baseman Rielly Embrey
(Poway
HS/SDSU), outfielder Brian Terrell (Mount Miguel/Southwestern
JC/UCSD),
pitcher John Beaven (UCSD), outfielder Joel Jerauld (Helix HS/Southwestern
JC), pitcher/infielder Billy Zbacnik (University City HS/Mesa
JC), and
outfielder Larry Watkins (Grossmont JC).
The Stars will play their first six games
at Casino Diamond on the Barona
Indian Reservation. This is a ballclub that has placed in the
Top 10 of the
NBC World Series five times.
