Stars go quietly in loss to Marines
EastCountySports.com
BARONA - The Barona Stars' chances of qualifying for the National
Baseball Congress World Series were dealt a serious blow in Friday's
(July 1) opening round of the Western Regional Tournament at the
Field of Dreams.
The tradition-rich Stars dropped a 6-4 decision to the Western
League rival San Diego Marines and now are one loss away from
kissing their NBC World Series chances good-bye.
Barona is slated to play Saturday (July 2) at 1 p.m.
No other information was provided by Barona Stars publicity director
JOHN O. ROLLO.

Groves in a groove for Stars in rout of
Mavs
EastCountySports.com
BARONA - Except for one brief lapse in the 4th inning, Barona
starting pitcher BOBBY GROVES was darn near unhittable
as the Stars mauled the San Diego Mavericks 15-2 in a Western
Wood Bat League contest Tuesday (June 28) at Field of Stars on
the Barona Indian Reservation.
Groves, who is 3-0 with one save and a 1.80 ERA, surrendered a
pair of singles and Tim Wightman triple for two runs in the 4th
inning. Other than that, he was lights out during his six-inning
stint.
The Stars (9-7, 4-1) scored all the runs they needed when they
pushed across 5 in the 1st inning. Red-hot OSCAR BARRERAS
ripped an RBI single and MIKE BUTTERFIELD capped
the deal with a grand slam.
Barreras bashed a second run-scoring single to extend the Stars'
advance to 6-0 in the 2nd inning.
CODY WILLIS smacked a 3-run home run in the 5th and JAVIER
BROWN Sr. ignited a 6-run 6th with a leadoff home run.
JOSH MAZZOLA contributed a 2-run single in the 6th.
The Stars will open the NBC World Series Western Regional Qualifying
Tournament on Friday (July 1).

Stars pass midseason test with nice showing
at Best of the West
EastCountySports.com
SAN LUIS OBISPO - The Barona Stars, who are looking forward to
hosting the NBC World Series Western Regional Qualifying Tournament
over the Fourth of July weekend, are coming off a respectable
three-game showing in the Best in the West Tournament.
The Stars (8-7) split a pair with the host San Luis Obispo Blues,
falling 5-0 in the tournament meeting on Friday (June 24) before
taking a 2-0 non-league decision on Saturday (June 25).
In between, the Stars enjoyed one of their finest offensive showings
as JOSH MAZZOLA drove in 7 runs with a pair of home runs
in a 15-2 romp over the Paso Robles Reds.
Mazzola's grand slam capped a six-run 6th inning and turned a
4-2 Stars lead into an 8-run cushion.
Barona's OSCAR BARRERAS also came up big against Paso Robles,
slashing four singles and a double for 3 RBI and 3 runs scored.
Paso Robles pitchers surrendered 18 hits to the Stars, who received
2 hits apiece from JAKE BOWEN (two doubles, RBI, run),
RANDY OCHOA (plus 2 runs), BRIAN SOS (double, RBI),
MIKE BUTTERFIELD and DAVID GOMEZ.
WILL MILLER pitched six innings to gain the win over Paso
Robles. He struck out 8 and did not allow an earned run. JOEL
MATTHEWS pitched 2 shutout innings of relief before WARD
MINICH spun a perfect 9th.
The one setback sustained by the Stars was due to a former East
County pitching standout DAN BRUCKART, who struck out 17
and scattered 7 hits in the SLO Blue' shutout victory.
"The kid had a career night, he was untouchable," Stars
owner and manager MICKEY DEUTSCHMAN said. "He threw
us four fastballs early and we got hits off all of them.
After that, I don't think we saw another fastball for a strike.
He just killed us with the deuce."
The Stars avenged that loss 24 hours later as BRANDON ABELL,
Matthews and BOBBY GROVES combined for the 4-hit shutout.
Abell toiled the first six frames, using just 59 pitches to silence
the Blues on 3 hits. Matthews allowed just one hit in his 7th
inning and Groves held San Luis Obispo hitless over the final
two frames.
David Gomez doubled and scored on an error to give Barona
a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning. The Stars doubled their advantage
in the 6th as BILLY ZBACNIK walked and raced home on CODY
WILLIS' double.
Barona returns home to the Barona Field of Stars to entertain
the San Diego Mavericks in a 5 p.m. Western Wood Bat League game
on Tuesday (June 28).
The 10-team NBC Regionals begins Friday (July 1) and continue
through Monday (July 4). Match-ups forthcoming.

After home team settled, home team's performance
is unsettling
EastCountySports.com
BARONA - Even the longest day of the year wasn't enough for the
Barona Stars to sink the San Diego Navy in Tuesday's (June 21)
Western Wood Bat League encounter at Barona's Field of Stars.
That would be due to a scheduling mix-up that caused both teams
to believe that they were the home team. By the time the confusion
was resolved - the first pitch was thrown at 6:20 p.m. - the Stars
were allotted six innings to pull out a victory.
Although the Stars were in comeback mode after falling behind
5-0 in the first two innings, darkness doused their bid to pull
out a win as the Navy sailed away with a 6-4 victory.
The loss leveled the Stars' overall mark at 6-6, and dropped their
Western Wood Bat League to 3-1.
The Stars made one major challenge in the 3rd inning as JAVIER
BROWN SR. and OSCAR BARRERAS contributed RBI
singles to a 3-run rally.
Barona, however, muscled up only 4 hits, two coming off Brown's
bat.
Next up for the Stars is the best in the West Tournament, which
begins on Friday (June 24) at Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo. The Stars
will play a double-header against the San Luis Obispo Blues at
3 p.m. and the Paso Robles Reds at 7 p.m. A sweep would send the
Stars into the final round on Sunday (June 26) at Stanford University.

Stars report for victory against Marines
EastCountySports.com

Tuesday (June 14) as coach MICKEY DEUTSCHMAN's ballclub
claimed gained a 7-1 Western Wood-Bat League victory over the
San Diego Marines.
CODY WILLIS whacked a 2-run homer and BRANDON PETERS
swatted a solo shot during a 4-run 3rd inning as Barona forged
into a 7-0 lead en route to snapping a three-game losing streak.
Barona (5-3, 4-0) travels to Reno for a two-game series beginning
Friday (June 17).
