EastCountySports.com staff report

SANTEE — West Hills recovered from an extended opening-set loss and won three consecutive sets Thursday, defeating Grossmont 3-1 in one of the first significant East County girls volleyball results of the season.

Grossmont captured a competitive first set 27-25, but West Hills answered by winning the next two sets by identical 26-24 scores. The Wolf Pack then removed any remaining suspense with a dominant 25-13 victory in the fourth.

The result gives West Hills an important early victory over a Grossmont program that finished 23-11 and won its league last season. For Grossmont, the loss came despite returning several of its leading contributors from that team.

Foothills Christian sweeps Holtville

Foothills Christian opened its season with a commanding 3-0 victory over Holtville.

The Knights controlled the match from the beginning, winning 25-12, 25-10 and 25-17. Foothills outscored Holtville 75-39 across the three sets and never allowed the Vikings to extend a set beyond 17 points.

Foothills Christian is coming off a 23-14 season and a Division III semifinal appearance.

Liberty Charter defeats Kearny

Liberty Charter earned a 3-1 victory over Kearny, winning 25-17, 25-19, 16-25 and 25-23.

The Lions took control by winning the first two sets before Kearny responded convincingly in the third. Liberty recovered in a close fourth set, closing out the match 25-23.

The victory gives Liberty a positive opening result following a 7-20 campaign last season.

Otay Ranch rallies past Christian

Christian won the opening set but could not maintain the advantage in a 3-1 loss to Otay Ranch.

The Patriots captured the first set 25-21 before the Mustangs responded with three consecutive victories, 25-18, 25-23 and 25-21.

The final two sets were decided by a combined six points as Christian remained competitive against an Otay Ranch program that won 24 matches and a Metro Mesa championship last season.

San Ysidro sweeps Mount Miguel

San Ysidro defeated Mount Miguel 3-0 in Wednesday’s East County opener.

The Cougars won the first two sets 25-15 and 25-7. Mount Miguel produced a much stronger response in the third, extending San Ysidro before falling 26-24.
