LAKESIDE — El Capitan turned the busiest week on the East County girls volleyball schedule into a tournament championship run.
The Vaqueros completed a 6-1 week, captured the Sweetwater Tournament title and improved to 8-4 overall. El Capitan opened the week by sweeping West Hills, then went 5-1 during the two-day tournament.
El Capitan’s program credited the championship to the players’ work, teamwork, communication and competitive fight. The Vaqueros posed with the championship trophy after completing the tournament run.
Senior Josephine Conyers powered the offense throughout the week with 69 kills while adding 23 aces and 58 digs. Olivia Bania directed the attack with 162 assists.
Rylee Declercq supplied 38 kills and six blocks, while Teegan Hinrichsen finished with 30 kills. Harper Liedecke anchored the back row with 87 digs, Raven Honstead collected 49 digs and 12 aces, and Abby Thoren contributed 45 digs and 10 aces.
Across seven matches, El Capitan totaled 177 kills, 65 aces, 311 digs, 170 assists and 12 blocks.
The Vaqueros swept West Hills 25-19, 25-19, 25-18 before tournament victories over Calexico and Chula Vista Learning Community Charter. Foothills Christian handed El Capitan its lone tournament defeat, but the Vaqueros recovered and finished the event as Sweetwater Tournament champions.
Foothills Christian scores four tournament wins
Foothills Christian went 4-1 at the Sweetwater Tournament and produced one of the week’s strongest collections of victories.
The Knights swept Chula Vista Learning Community Charter and Calexico, then defeated tournament champion El Capitan in two sets. Foothills followed with a three-set victory over Mission Hills before Patrick Henry handed the Knights their only loss, 2-1.
Foothills won nine of its 12 sets during the tournament and came out of the weekend with an 11-3 record at the conclusion of its reported matches.
Christian takes down Rancho Bernardo, La Jolla
Christian delivered two quality nonleague victories, outlasting Rancho Bernardo in five sets before defeating La Jolla in four.
The Patriots’ 3-2 victory over Rancho Bernardo opened the week and was followed two nights later by a 3-1 win against La Jolla. Christian completed a 2-0 week and improved to 5-6 through those matches.
With the two victories, the Patriots continued to rebound from a demanding early schedule that included Otay Ranch, Mt. Carmel, Bishop’s, Del Norte, La Costa Canyon, Eastlake and Granite Hills.
Santana records consecutive sweeps
Santana did not drop a set during a 2-0 week.
The Sultans swept Holtville on Tuesday and followed by sweeping Valhalla on Wednesday. Santana improved to 5-2 while pushing its winning streak to three matches.
Against Valhalla, Santana held the Norsemen to 17 kills and a .017 hitting percentage. The Sultans won behind sustained serving pressure and limited Valhalla to 42 total service attempts.
Granite Hills goes 3-1 at Sweetwater
Granite Hills rebounded from a three-set loss to Classical Academy by winning three consecutive matches at the Sweetwater Tournament.
The Eagles swept Holtville, Olympian and Kearny in two-set matches. Coronado ended the run with a 2-0 victory Saturday.
Granite Hills finished the week 3-2 and moved to 8-5 overall. The Eagles won six consecutive sets during their three-match tournament streak before the loss to Coronado.
Grossmont finds three victories at tournament
Grossmont’s week began with a five-set loss to Ramona, but the Foothillers found some traction during a 3-4 week that included six Sweetwater Tournament matches.
The Foothillers lost to San Dieguito Academy and Bonita Vista before sweeping Victory Christian Academy. Grossmont returned Saturday to defeat Brawley in three sets and sweep Canyon Hills before falling to tournament champion El Capitan.
The three tournament victories accounted for Grossmont’s first wins of the season. The Foothillers concluded the week 3-9 overall.
Valhalla splits behind Reece, Bollens
Valhalla opened the week with a 25-19, 25-18, 25-8 sweep of High Tech San Diego before falling in three sets to Santana.
Audrey Reece combined for 12 kills, eight aces and 29 digs in the two matches. She produced five aces and 20 digs against High Tech SD, then led the Norsemen with nine kills and nine digs against Santana.
Jordann Bollens collected 12 kills and 26 digs during the week, including seven kills and a team-high 22 digs in the victory. Finley Ryan was highly efficient against High Tech SD, putting away five kills on six attempts without an error.
Trianne Nguyentu distributed 41 assists across the two matches, including 24 in the sweep. As a team, Valhalla totaled 41 kills, 23 aces and 98 digs for the week.
Mountain Empire earns home sweep
Mountain Empire split its two matches, falling at Valley Center in four sets before sweeping the School for Entrepreneurship & Technology.
The Redhawks captured the opening set against Valley Center 25-19, but the Jaguars answered to win the next three, 25-18, 26-24, 25-10.
Josalin Shawcroft led Mountain Empire with nine kills against Valley Center. Kailey Quintana added six kills and three blocks, while the Redhawks finished with 27 kills, eight aces, 40 digs and 27 assists.
Mountain Empire returned home two days later and defeated SET 3-0. Shawcroft and Breeza Valdez each had 10 assists in the sweep, while Guadalupe Campos collected six digs.
The Redhawks completed a 1-1 week and improved to 4-3.
Liberty Charter rallies past Calvin Christian
Liberty Charter split two matches and produced one of the week’s best comebacks.
After falling to Ramona in four sets, the Lions dropped the first two sets against Calvin Christian, 25-18 and 25-22. Liberty reversed the match by winning 25-15 and 25-17, then completed the comeback with a 15-13 fifth-set victory.
The 3-2 win lifted Liberty Charter to 4-3 overall and prevented an 0-2 week.
Monte Vista earns two tournament victories
Monte Vista went 2-2 in its four reported Sweetwater Tournament matches after opening the week with losses to Kearny and Hilltop.
The Monarchs were edged by Kearny in five sets, then lost in three to Hilltop. Monte Vista responded by sweeping SET and Southwest El Centro in tournament play. Mira Mesa defeated the Monarchs in two sets between those victories.
Additional Sweetwater Tournament slots appeared on Monte Vista’s schedule without reported results, so they are not included in the weekly record.
Helix splits two road matches
Helix swept Mt. Carmel in its first match of the week before dropping a five-set contest at Scripps Ranch.
The Scripps Ranch result originally remained unreported, but the Falcons were later credited with a 3-2 victory. Individual set scores were not posted.
The Scotties finished the week 1-1.
Steele Canyon tests highly ranked opponent
Steele Canyon’s only match came against then-No. 5 Santa Fe Christian, which defeated the Cougars 25-20, 25-16, 25-11.
Taylor Carpenter supplied 10 kills and hit .360 for Steele Canyon. Tiana Baker added five kills with a .385 hitting percentage, and Izzy Trotto totaled four blocks.
Despite the defeat, the Cougars generated 25 kills and nine blocks against one of the county’s stronger programs. Steele Canyon ended the week 11-5 overall.
West Hills falls to El Capitan
West Hills lost to El Capitan in a matchup of conference teams, 25-19, 25-19, 25-18.
Chloe Olson led the Wolf Pack with seven kills and a .200 hitting percentage while also collecting 21 digs and two aces. Elouise Duke had three kills, 11 assists, six digs and two aces.
Mia Loera added 12 digs, and Mackenzie Blum Hopgood contributed five assists. West Hills totaled 21 kills, 59 digs, 21 assists and four aces.
Mount Miguel nearly completes comeback
Mount Miguel pushed O’Farrell Charter to five sets after falling behind 2-0.
The Matadors dropped the first two sets 25-18 and 25-22 before responding with victories of 25-20 and 27-25. O’Farrell recovered to take the deciding set 15-10.
It was Mount Miguel’s only reported match of the week.
El Cajon Valley takes set from Hoover
El Cajon Valley went 0-3 with losses to Southwest San Diego, Hoover and Lincoln.
Southwest SD swept the Braves 25-12, 25-16, 25-16. El Cajon Valley then took the second set from Hoover 25-22, but the Cardinals won the match in four, 25-13, 22-25, 25-14, 25-10.
A final score and individual set scores were not reported for the Lincoln match.
