LA JOLLA — Avianna Woodley and Abilene “Abi” Walker earned A’s — and not just for their first names — with eight tackles apiece, leading Mountain Empire to its first-ever victory.

The offense also established a school record for points scored as the RedHawks defeated Preuss UCSD, 26-0, at Spanos Field on Thursday (Sept. 24).

Mountain Empire improved to 1-4 overall, while Preuss fell to 2-6. One of Preuss’ victories came against Bayfront Charter, which previously defeated the RedHawks, offering another sign of Mountain Empire’s progress.

Half of Woodley and Walker’s 16 combined tackles were quarterback sacks, including five by Walker. Additional defensive pressure helped Sienna Gonzalez collect an interception.

On offense, quarterback Elysa Cisneros needed just six completions to produce several big plays, including a 50-yard touchdown pass to Walker on her lone reception.

Cisneros also threw touchdown passes to Addison Reed, who finished with three receptions for 31 yards, and Mikailah Bartz, whose scoring catch covered 23 yards.

Walker finished with two touchdowns, adding a 43-yard scoring run. Reed and Woodley each scored a one-point conversion.

Mia Quevedo and Bartz added five flag pulls apiece.

Mountain Empire returns to action Monday (Sept. 28) at 4 p.m. against Southwest El Centro (8-4).

LIBERTY CHARTER 71, CRISTO REY 6

ALPINE — Liberty Charter became the 10th school in CIF San Diego Section history to score at least 70 points in a game, defeating the Cristo Rey Lobos of North Park, 71-6, on Thursday (Sept. 24).

The Lions improved to 5-0. It was the first game in program history for the visiting Lobos of North Park.

Liberty Charter has outscored its first five opponents by a combined 215-58, with Thursday’s performance marking its highest scoring output of the season.
