SCRIPPS RANCH — Christian spent most of its regular season without the quarterback who figured to shape it.
Now, with the postseason approaching, Kaleb Runkle has given the Patriots a reason to reconsider what their finish might look like.
The senior returned from an injury that had limited him to approximately five quarters entering Friday, completing 17 of 20 passes for 270 yards and four touchdowns as Christian survived a furious Scripps Ranch comeback for a 48-46 victory in the Eastern League finale.
Julian Morones rushed for 219 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries, while Connor Nguyen caught three touchdown passes. The Patriots ended a four-game losing streak, secured a winning regular season at 6-4 and collected their first league victory after four defeats.
But an evening that restored Christian’s passing attack nearly ended with another disappointment.
Scripps Ranch scored on a 95-yard touchdown pass with 20 seconds remaining, then had an opportunity to tie the game with a two-point conversion. The Falcons’ quarterback rolled right, but his pass fell incomplete.
Christian escaped with the victory — and with its most encouraging offensive development heading into November.
An immediate difference
Runkle wasted little time demonstrating what the Patriots had been missing.
He opened Christian’s first possession with a 30-yard completion to Rosier, then found Nguyen for a touchdown on the next play.
It was the beginning of a first half in which the Patriots scored six touchdowns.
Nguyen added scoring receptions of 33 yards and another long touchdown as Christian repeatedly answered the Falcons. He finished with three catches for 88 yards, all three receptions resulting in touchdowns.
Morones supplied the ground threat, scoring on runs of 45 and 20 yards before halftime.
Runkle also connected with his younger brother, Gavin Runkle, for a 50-yard gain to the Scripps Ranch 12. A 12-yard touchdown pass to Rosier followed.
Christian led 42-27 at halftime, having found the offensive production that had become increasingly difficult to sustain during its October slide.
Rosier finished with seven receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown. Gavin added four catches for 74 yards, while Uhland caught two passes for nine yards.
Falcons refuse to go away
The Patriots’ offensive revival did not make the Falcons any easier to put away.
Scripps Ranch quarterback Nolan Cooper completed 11 of 14 passes for 321 yards and five touchdowns, adding 41 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Ian Campbell rushed for 190 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries and also caught a scoring pass.
The Falcons, coming off their first victory of the season against University City, repeatedly produced the explosive plays necessary to stay within reach.
After Scripps Ranch narrowed the margin to 42-33, Christian turned to Morones.
The sophomore carried much of the workload on a drive that also included a Runkle completion to Rosier. Morones finished it with a 3-yard touchdown run with 7:23 remaining, his third rushing score of the evening.
Christian’s conversion pass failed, leaving the Patriots ahead 48-33.
That missed opportunity became increasingly significant.
Cooper delivered a 22-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Zeller with 3:27 remaining, hitting his receiver in stride in the end zone. The extra point brought Scripps Ranch within 48-40.
Christian subsequently advanced deep into Falcons territory, positioning itself to finish the game. Instead, Morones fumbled at the Scripps Ranch 5-yard line.
The Falcons turned that opening into a stunning final threat, striking straight down the middle for the 95-yard touchdown with 20 seconds left.
Only the unsuccessful two-point pass kept the comeback from erasing Christian’s lead entirely.
Scripps Ranch finished 1-9 overall and 1-4 in league.
A different outlook for November
Christian’s September success and October struggles left the Patriots with a season that had fallen short of its early promise.
They opened 5-0, then lost four consecutive league games before Friday’s escape.
Runkle’s return changes the possibilities for coach Patrick Bugg’s offense.
One of the county’s top quarterbacks entered the season expecting a substantially different senior campaign. His posted passing statistics include only the opener against Valley Center and Friday’s finale.
In those two appearances, he completed 28 of 33 passes for 552 yards and six touchdowns, with one interception.
Against Scripps Ranch, his accuracy and four scoring throws immediately restored a passing dimension to complement Morones, whose three touchdowns helped Christian account for all seven of its scores.
The Patriots still have work to do. Allowing seven touchdowns and surrendering a late turnover left them defending a tying conversion in a game they once led by 21.
But they enter the postseason with a winning record, a productive sophomore runner and their senior quarterback back in command.
For a team that spent October searching for answers, that is a meaningful place to start.
