EL CAJON — Granite Hills completed one of the East County field hockey season’s most unexpected championship runs, defeating previously unbeaten Hilltop on consecutive days to capture the Metro South Bay Division title.

The Eagles secured the championship with a 1-0 overtime victory on Senior Night, completing a 5-0 conference season despite entering the final week with a losing overall record.

Eastlake supplied the Metro Conference’s most dominant full-season performance, finishing 8-0 in the Mesa Division without allowing a conference goal. The Titans outscored their Metro opponents 42-0 and earned a place in the eight-team Open Division playoffs.

Granite Hills completes run

Granite Hills entered the closing stretch chasing a Hilltop team that had won 12 games overall and had not lost within the South Bay Division.

The Eagles responded with their best field hockey of the season.

Granite Hills defeated El Capitan 5-0, with Yoselin Garcia-Pelayo recording a hat trick. Genesis Heredia Ornelas and Reagan Lyon added one goal apiece.

The Eagles then overwhelmed Southwest 12-0. Heredia Ornelas and Gisele Stonier each scored three goals, while Garcia-Pelayo and Emma Steingraber scored twice apiece. Brooke Flesuras and Sahara Molina completed the scoring.

Granite Hills still needed to get past Hilltop, which entered the final two days unbeaten in conference play.

The Eagles defeated the Lancers 2-1 on Oct. 29, setting up a winner-take-all Senior Night rematch the following evening.

Granite Hills prevailed 1-0 in overtime to secure the South Bay championship. Kendall Ehlers, Molina and Stonier delivered scoring conversions during the overtime procedure as the Eagles completed their unbeaten conference season.

The championship represented a considerable turnaround for a program that finished 5-10 last season and endured another demanding nonconference schedule this fall.

Granite Hills finished 5-0, outscoring its South Bay opponents 22-1. The Eagles closed the regular season with four consecutive division victories by a combined 20-1 margin.

Their season ended Monday with a 4-0 loss to Sage Creek in the Division II play-in round, but that result did not diminish a championship run built during the final weeks of the regular season.

Granite Hills closes the year 6-10 overall and as the Metro South Bay champion.

Eastlake dominates Mesa

Eastlake allowed neither a loss nor a goal during its eight conference games.

The Titans completed their perfect Metro campaign with a 3-0 victory over Olympian on Oct. 30, finishing three games ahead of the Eagles in the standings.

Junior Emily Burgon leads Eastlake with 27 goals, 12 assists and 66 points. Senior Gwendolyn Goold has supplied eight goals and 10 assists, while Neisha May has scored six times.

Senior goalkeeper Emma Brown anchors a defense that produced eight consecutive conference shutouts.

The Metro championship followed a 2025 season in which Eastlake won the CIF San Diego Section Division II title. The Titans moved into Division I this season and were subsequently selected for the eight-team Open Division playoff field.

Eastlake (14-2-2) finished No. 10 in the latest county computer ratings and is the only Metro Conference program ranked among the county’s current top 20.

The Titans received the No. 8 Open Division seed and will visit top-seeded Bishop’s (19-1) on Thursday at 3:15 p.m.

Bishop’s enters the postseason No. 1 in the county computer ratings, led by junior Lola Conway, who has scored 62 goals.

Olympian receives bye

Olympian (10-6-2) finished second in the Mesa Division at 5-3 and received the No. 4 seed in Division II.

The Eagles will open the postseason Saturday at 1 p.m., hosting the winner of Wednesday’s first-round game between Otay Ranch and Sage Creek.

Senior Mikaela Stalnaker leads Olympian with 14 goals, five assists and 33 points. Junior Valentina Escobedo has five goals and six assists, while senior Abigail Stark has recorded six goals and two assists.

Freshman goalkeeper Allison Sardon has emerged as another important part of the Eagles’ postseason hopes.

Otay Ranch earns home game

Otay Ranch (9-8) finished third in the Mesa Division with a 4-4 record and received the No. 5 seed in Division II.

The Mustangs will host No. 12 Sage Creek on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. A victory would send Otay Ranch into an all-Metro quarterfinal at Olympian.

Senior Danika Rivera leads the Mustangs with 17 goals, five assists and 39 points. Sophomore Sasha Manuel has contributed three goals and two assists.

Otay Ranch completed its regular season with a 1-0 victory over Bonita Vista.

Hilltop, Helix meet in playoff

The first round also produces an immediate conference matchup between Hilltop and Helix.

No. 8 Hilltop will host the ninth-seeded Highlanders on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The winner advances to visit top-seeded Point Loma on Saturday.

Hilltop (12-5) finished 4-2 in the South Bay Division, with both losses coming against Granite Hills during the final two days.

Senior Hannah Gomez leads the Lancers with 21 goals, five assists and 47 points. Sophomore Raina Jones has added eight goals and three assists.

Hilltop scored 29 goals during its four conference victories, including two shutouts of Southwest and two victories over El Capitan.

Helix (8-13-2) finished fourth in the Mesa Division but generated consecutive late-season victories over Otay Ranch and Bonita Vista to strengthen its postseason position.

The Highlanders defeated Otay Ranch 2-1 and Bonita Vista 1-0 before closing conference play with a loss to Olympian.

Wednesday’s meeting guarantees the Metro Conference at least one more Division II quarterfinalist. With Olympian already through, the conference will have at least two teams playing Saturday—and could have three if Otay Ranch advances.
