SPRING VALLEY (12-2-15) — Nine Matadors contributed to Mount Miguel’s season opening rout of Mar Vista on Tuesday (Dec. 1) in the Baron Optimist Tournament.
Six-foot-3 junior forward DARIAN NORWOOD rolled off a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Matadors, who led 40-21 by halftime.
TREVON ALLEN, a 6-1 senior forward, muscled in 18 points, cleared 7 rebounds, dished 5 assists and recorded 3 steals, while TAJ TUCKER pitched in 10 points and dished 4 assists.
“This is the best team I’ve had in the last few years,” said Matadors coach JAY ROWLETT. “We have all the pieces to be able to compete at all levels.”
Mount Miguel: Darian Norwood 22 (10 reb, 2 ast), Trevon Allen 18 (7 reb, 5 ast, 3 st), Taj Tucker 10 (1 reb, 4 ast, 2 stl), Trannell Hudson 8 (2 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl), Andre Cox 6 (1 reb, 5 ast), Marquis Neal 5 (2 reb), Chris Thompson 5 (1 reb), Justice Chima 3 (1 reb), Raymond Lucas 2 (1 reb).
CHRISTIAN 64, LIBERTY CHARTER 21 — Christian made it look easy in Tuesday’s (Dec. 1) second round of the San Diego Small Schools Tournament, leading from start to finish in a 64-21 rout over Liberty Charter.
The Patriots are off to a 2-0 start following another win in the tourney. The Patriots had 11 different players score in a game that was never in doubt.
“We had everyone contribute tonight,” said Patriots assistant coach TIM BROWN.
The Patriot defense fought hard all night and only gave up 4 points in the second half.
TRAVIS BALLARD led the Patriots with 14 points, hitting 7 of 9 from the floor, while DAVID TODD JEREMIAH chipped in 10, hitting all 4 of his field goals and a couple of free throws.
“We moved the ball really well on offense and had a lot of unselfish plays,” Brown noted.
The Patriots finished the game with 19 assists.
Christian: Travis Ballard 14 (6 reb, 2 stl, 4 blk), David Todd Jeremiah 10 (3 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl), Jacob Sandusky 8 (3 reb), Jackson Larsen 6 (3 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl), Joey Vrzich 6 (4 reb, 1 ast), Domanic Safarta 5 (4 reb, 3 ast, 1 stl), Layne Larsen 4 (3 ast, 2 stl), Kyle Stowers 3 (3 reb, 6 ast, 2 blk), Dominic Bristol 2 (1 stl, 1 blk), Jack Mason 2 (5 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl), Josh Henderson 2, Garrett Nielsen (1 reb, 1 ast), Grant Taylor (1 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl), Will Valley (1 stl).
LA JOLLA COUNTRY DAY 56, EL CAPITAN 32 – An El Capitan basketball crew looking for experience played a game of chase in Tuesday’s (Dec. 1) first round of the Game on Challenge against visiting La Jolla Country Day.
Not surprisingly, the Vaqueros came up short across the board and tumbled as LJCD prevailed 56-32.
“We were in the game in the first half – just three buckets away from knotting it up,” said head coach FRANK QUINONES. “We cut the lead to 6 points in the second half but were unable to maintain our momentum.”
Senior BRIAN IRVIN nailed 3 triples for 11 points and snagged 7 rebounds for El Capitan.
KADE KYGAR also hit 2 long rangers to finish with 10 points and 8 rebounds for the Vaqueros.
“When you sit there and look at it, it was like men playing against us,” Quinones said. “They were giants.”
