ANCHORAGE, Alaska (7-14-06) -- Former University of Alaska Anchorage basketball star Kemmy Burgess has signed a contract to play for Woon!Aris, a club in The Netherlands' top professional division.

Woon!Aris, which finished 5-21 last season, is located in Leeuwarden, a city of about 90,000 located 80 miles north of Amsterdam. The season runs from August through April.

“We are thrilled for Kemmy to get an opportunity to play profession basketball,” said Seawolves head coach Rusty Osborne. “At UAA, he grew tremendously as both a person and a basketball player, and I’m confident he will continue to flourish in Europe.”

A 6-1, 185-pound shooting guard, Burgess is coming off an outstanding 2005-06 season that saw him earn honorable mention All-America recognition, plus All-West Region and All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference accolades. He finished second in the GNAC’s overall scoring race with 21.1 points per game and led the league in conference-only scoring by more than a point with 23.1 ppg. In his two seasons at UAA, the El Cajon Valley High product helped the Seawolves to a 39-22 overall record and a pair of NCAA Tournament bids.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (5-2-06) -- KEMMY BURGESS, who led the University of Alaska-Anchorage men's basketball team back to the NCAA Division II Tournament and captured numerous postseason honors, was the winner of the 2005-06 UAA Athlete of the Year Award at the athletic department's 22nd annual end-of-year banquet, Sunday (Apr. 30) at the Hilton Anchorage Hotel.

Burgess, a 6-1 senior guard out of El Cajon Valley High, finished second in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's overall scoring race with 21.1 points per game and led the league in conference-only scoring by more than a point at 23.1 ppg. The transfer student from Southern California College (now Vanguard University) in Costa Mesa paced the Seawolves to a 19-12 overall record in one of the nation's strongest conferences in Division II.

He was named an honorable mention All-American by Division II Bulletin, in addition to first-team All-West Region and All-GNAC accolades.

Burgess was the only player in Division II this season to rank among the nation's top 25 in scoring (22nd), three-point percentage (8th, .450), three-pointers made (20th, 3.1 per game) and free throw percentage (20th, .868). In the second half of league play, he averaged 27.4 ppg as the Seawolves went 6-3 and posted victories over 5th-ranked Seattle Pacific and 9th-ranked Western Washington.

In two seasons at UAA, Burgess crushed the school's career three-point percentage record (.474) and finished among the all-time Seawolf leaders in scoring average (7th, 18.6 ppg), points (9th, 1,136), threes made (3rd, 195) and free throw percentage (4th, .854). He also claimed the team MVP trophy in 2003-04, when team advanced to the NCAAs with a 20-10 record.

When playing high school ball with the Braves (1996-98), Burgess became the all-time leading scorer in Grossmont Conference history with 2,066 points, which ranks second in East County history behind the 2,549 recorded by TONY CLARK (Valhalla and Christian high schools), who now plays professional baseball for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Burgess' 33.1 scoring average in 1998 was surpassed just twice in San Diego Section history. Clark averaged 43.1 as a senior for Christian in 1990, then Chase Budinger of La Costa Canyon went for 34.0 this past winter. Burgess also had a streak of 31 straight made free throws, the 3rd-longest streak in the CIFSDS record book, and made 118 three-point shots in 1998, the 4th-most in local high school basketball.

The Athlete of the Year award, sponsored by the Benton Bay Athletic Lions Club and UAA, is voted on by a 15-member committee of UAA employees, Benton Bay members and local media.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (11-7-05/UPDATED 11-21-05) -- The leading scorer in Grossmont Conference basketball history with more than 2,000 career points, former East County Player of the Year KEMMY BURGESS is getting prepared for his senior season at Alaska-Anchorage, as the Seawolves will host the 28th annual Great Alaska Shootout over Thanksgiving weekend.

Burgess’ final season of college ball was postponed due to shoulder surgery last season, so he red-shirted, along with teammate Aaron Lawrence. But both are now at full strength, as the pair hopes to lead the Seawolves to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title.

The coaches tabbed UAA for third among the 10 NCAA Division II schools, but sights are set for an even higher finish above unanimous preseason favorite Western Washington.

'Hot Pick' scores 29 points on ESPN2

Known as “Hot Pick” by teammates, Burgess proved to be tough to defend in his first season in Alaska, hitting better than 56 percent from beyond the 3-point arc as part of his 16.1 scoring average. For his efforts, Burgess was named 2003-04 Newcomer of the Year and All-Conference second team after transferring to the Seawolves from Vanguard University in Costa Mesa.

“Kemmy can stroke it,” UAA head coach Rusty Osborne said of his All-America candidate. “Plus, he’s a flat-out money guy. When it comes down to the tough shot, Kemmy’s the one we want shooting and more than likely he’s going to make it.

Just like he did in high school.

Burgess, a three-time All-Grossmont North League selection out of El Cajon Valley High, scored 2,033 points with the Braves (including 226 3-point baskets), ranking second all-time in San Diego County.

“He’s our emotional leader and our toughest kid – really the heart and soul of the team,” added Osborne.

And the Seawolves are off to a solid start at 4-1, sweeping a pair of contests to open the season from Northland Baptist at home, then completed a cross-continent trip to Lake Buena Vista, Fla., taking 2-of-3 ballgames for a third-place finish at Disney's Division II Tip-Off Classic. Burgess scored 16 of his 24 points in the second half to lead UAA to a 79-66 men’s basketball victory over nationally ranked Nebraska-Omaha in the third-place contest.
