her heart in San Diego

ALCALA PARK (10-12-10) — Following a cross-country tour of colleges during the summer, including stops at Notre Dame, Northwestern, DePaul and Hawai'i, Christian High third baseman MARY GRABOWSKI left her heart in San Diego.

Grabowski, the defending East County batting champion who helped the Patriots advance to the CIF Division IV championship game, decided to remain in her hometown and made a verbal commitment to attend the University of San Diego for 2012-13.

Among her other NCAA Division I offers were Boston College, DePaul and Louisiana Tech.

"Mary wants to make a difference in her city and USD felt like the right place to go," said Gabriela Grabowski's, Mary's mother. "She loves the coaches, plus USD already signed (East County products) JENNY LAHITTE (Granite Hills) and CASSIDY COLEMAN (Horizon High, Santee), so they're going to have a great softball program."

Grobowksi batting .333 at a freshman in 2009, sharing the East County Rookie of the Year Award with NOELLE JOHNSON of West Hills. Grabowski then contended for a first-ever East County triple crown before settling for the batting crown with a .526 mark as a sophomore this past season, also finishing second in RBI with 43 and gaining a first-team All-East County berth in helping Christian to a second straight CIF runner-up finish.

Renegades gain ASA silver

HEMET (8-9-10) — The San Diego Renegades 18U softball team, which features four standouts from the East County, finished as runners-up at the ASA 'A' national softball championships, which concluded Sunday (Aug. 8).

The Renegades, which qualified for the event by placing third at the Southern California regional event, avenged a loss to the Combat Panthers (Newbury Park) to gain a championship round berth. The team then defeated the Stone City Sharks (Chicago) to force a playback final, but the Sharks finally claimed the title with a 9-7 marathon decision in 10 innings.

East County products – all 2010 graduates – include Valhalla's KAITLIN McGINLEY and West Hills' ALEX MILLER (both will play for Cal State San Marcos), along with West Hills' twins MICHERIE and FAITH KORIA (both will play for Howard College, a junior college in Texas).

Other standouts include CIF San Diego Section player of the year Alix Johnson (Mt. Carmel), who will play for Arizona State, Sundevils teammate Kellie Fox (to UCLA), and CIF Division III player of the year Alexis Curtiss (University City), who is headed for Buffalo.

Oher Renegades with NCAA Division I scholarships include Katie Schumacher (Scripps Ranch/ Monmouth), Sammi Gallardo (Otay Ranch/Buffalo), Tori Torrescano (Scripps Ranch '09/Iowa State) and Lauren Gellerman (Westview '09/Ohio).

The team includes a host of East County standouts, including 2010 co-player of the year LORENA KLOPP of Steele Canyon, her Cougars teammate MADISON HANTEN, plus All-East County performers in pitcher TORREY ROOK (Valhalla) and shortstop MONIQUE ELLIOTT (Christian).

The coaches include FRED SANDERS and Steele Canyon assistant QUINN RENFRO.

The results for Power Surge at the ASAs can be found HERE.

HEMET (7-31-10) — The East County Gamers softball team, the defending U16 champions in the inaugural USTSA series, has also qualified for the ASA Nationals. The Gamers will participate in the U18 'A' Division tournament, Aug. 1-10.

The Gamers, who are associated with East County ASA, features a roster dominated with Grossmont Conference ballplayers.

The list includes: Granite Hills: 1B Nicole Obney, 2B Tarin Marks and Allie Cimmarrusti, 3B Michele Miller and Alissa Budvarson, P Desi Mejia, and former Eagles P/SS Britney Bertussi; Valhalla: OF Liana Gorney, C/OF Megan Hughes, P/OF Kyla Clapham, and future Norsemen P/OF Kirsten Gallo; El Capitan: C Cindy Gonzalez and SS/OF Felicia Arcamo; Steele Canyon: OF Amanda Hartnett; Coronado: P/1B Anik Ribera; and OF Steph Tobin (Naperville, Ill.).

All-state nods for Lahitte, Klopp, Gentry

© East County Sports.com
STOCKTON (7-7-10) — A trio of East County fastpitch standouts, including two repeat honorees, were named to one of several 2010 All-State teams, as selected by CalHi Sports.

Granite Hills senior JENNY LAHITTE and Steele Canyon senior LORENA KLOPP each were tabbed to the media outlet's All-State Second Team. Lahitte was chosen as a pitcher, while Klopp gained her berth among multi-purpose players.

In addition, Klopp was tabbed among medium-size schools, while Christian High first baseman RICKI GENTRY was named among small-size schools.

Lahitte, a 2008 all-state selection when she led the Eagles to the CIF San Diego Section Division I championship, led all East County pitchers with a 0.98 earned-run average. Her 323 strikeouts was also a Grossmont Conference record, while her career total of 647 is fourth all-time among conference schools.

The University of San Diego bound Lahitte also posted seven shutouts, and at one point posted consecutive victories over, arguably, the top three ballclubs in San Diego County in 4-time Division II champion Mt, Carmel, Division I champion El Camino, and Division I runner-up Torrey Pines.

Kl opp, an all-state selection as a freshman in 2007 when she established both conference and SPECIF large-school records with 60 RBI in a season and 9 RBI in a game, while winning the East County batting crown with a .531 average.

Pending the reporting of 2010 statistics on other players, Klopp's 42 career doubles in the second-best (first among large schools) in SDCIF history, while her 21 career homers is a new Grossmont Conference record (second in East County annuals).

Glop's pitching was also highly consistent, including strikeout totals of 132, 134 and 135, respectively, over her final three seasons (472 over her prep career) in posting a career record of 36-14 (.720).

Gentry finished second to Christian teammate MARY GRABOWSKI in the East County batting race with a .487 mark, helping the Division IV Patriots finish in second place for the second straight season in the Division I dominated Eastern League.

Gentry was an All-CIF Division IV selection by the coaches committee. Gentry and Klopp were second-team all-county picks by the media (through the San Diego Hall of Champions), while Lahitte earned a first-team all-county nod.

In addition, all three were also selected to the All-East County team.

Norsemen choose Sutton to replace Hartung

© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (6-26-10) — Longtime coach DOUG HARTUNG suddenly resigned as the Valhalla Norsemen softball mentor this week. Not exactly by choice, he said.

“For the past 30 years I’ve been coaching softball non-stop at a variety of levels,” Hartung noted. He spent nine seasons at the Norsemen’s helm where he guided Valhalla to three Grossmont league championships, a San Diego CIF crown in 2004 and an overall record of 185-105.

“But now I feel like I’ve been forced out.”

Although the Norsemen finished 22-11 last spring, the Valhalla administration was not pleased that only 17 girls turned out for the varsity and junior varsity teams combined.

“Doug’s done a great job at Valhalla,” said Norsemen athletic director ROBERT WILSON. “He knows the game and we have no complaints in that area.”

Wilson noted that Hartung had the second longest tenure of any active Valhalla coach, trailing only soccer coach BRAD BAUGHN, who has been there 11 years.

“We had a post-season review with Coach Hartung of the highs and lows of the season,” Wilson said. “The one thing that kept coming up was the focus on the low numbers in terms of player turnout.”

That, plus the fact that the Norsemen have a fulltime, qualified, on-campus teacher with 30 years softball coaching experience. Football coach STEVE SUTTON, who ranks third all-time in SDCIF history with a softball coaching record of 482-290-15, makes for a smooth transition in the eyes of the Valhalla administration.

Sutton was aware of the low turnout for softball.

“I guess the kids just didn’t want to come out,” he said. “That’s sad for a program like this.”

Sutton said he had received emails from a few of the players and their parents asking him to take the softball coaching position.

“I told them I’d always been interested in the job but that it wasn’t open,” he said.

Until the close of this season.

Given Sutton’s record on the softball field it’s obvious that he’s had a keen interest in the sport.

“Compared to football, it’s more relaxing. It’s fun,” he said. “I’ve always enjoyed coaching it.”

Hartung is a fulltime teacher at El Cajon Valley High. In the 1980s, he spent 10 seasons coaching softball and baseball for the Braves. In addition he was a varsity assistant baseball coach under GORDY THOMPSON at Granite Hills in 1991-92.

“I also coached a lot of community sports, especially softball,” Hartung added. “I’m disappointed how this Valhalla thing turned out. They really caught me off guard. But I still believe I have a lot to offer and plan to continue coaching somewhere else.”

Johnson reached magic number
in magical Wolf Pack season

© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (6-8-10) — Among all the numbers achieved by various East County performers this past season, one stood out over the rest.

West Hills High sophomore NOELLE JOHNSON became the first area performer to reach the 20-victory plateau since Valhalla's LACEY WILSON went 22-4 in 2005.

Throw in a berth in the CIF championship finale in the toughest division in the San Diego Section this past season, and it proved to be the formula to name Johnson as the East County Sports.com Pitcher of the Year.

Johnson finished with a 20-4 record and an earned run average of 1.09, leading the Wolf Pack to the Grossmont Hills League title. In the postseason, Johnson also pitched in every inning and winning four contests; her lone SDCIF losses came to eventual champion Mt. Carmel, which finished as the top-ranked team in the county.

A pair of other top-flight pitchers – JENNY LAHITTE of Granite Hills and Steele Canyon's LORENA KLOPP – who also contributed at other positions and with the bat shared the East County Sports.com Player of the Year award.

Lahitte, the East County strikeout leader with a Grossmont Conference record 323 whiffs, posted one of the most remarkable shutout streaks of the season, blanking Division II champion Mt. Carmel, Division I champion El Camino, and Division I runner-up Torrey Pines in consecutive starts.

Klopp won the same award as voted by GHL coaches for her strong effort over the second half of the season coming off knee surgery, leading the Cougars to a second-place finish behind West Hills.

In four seasons with Steele Canyon, Klopp's team posted a composite 92-30-3 record (.748), including a 35-5 mark in league play with three first-place pennants.

Lahitte was the ECS Pitcher of the Year in 2008, when she also earned all-state honors as a sophomore. Klopp took the pitcher award last season after winning the 2007 Newcomer of the Year as a freshman.

While the careers are over for Lahitte (going to USD) and Klopp (SDSU), new blood enters the region in freshman DELANIE GOURLEY of El Capitan, the East County Sports.com Newcomer of the Year.

Santana frosh AMBER SCHISLER, who became the Sultans' main pitcher during the playoffs, received the Unsung Hero Award after pacing her ballclub to a second straight SDCIF Div. III finals appearance.

Coach of the Year went to first-year West Hills mentor MIKE APPLEBAUM after the Wolf Pack dropped just two games in the regular season, ranking first or second in both major media polls over the majority of the season.
