was limited to Grossmonts only 3-pointer of the

Once again Grossmont got a strong effort off the bench

HEMET (1-23-14) Mt. San Jacinto College took
a 15-4 lead over visiting Grossmont College and never
looked back as the Screaming Eagles claimed a 70-57
Pacific Coast Athletic Conference-North battle of unbeatens
on Wednesday (Jan. 22).
TIM PATRICK led the Griffins with 15 points and 7 rebounds,
while TYSON KYGAR added 13 points including a trio of
triples.
The missing factor for Grossmont was limited play by
MARK OGDEN, who was in foul trouble in the first six
minutes. He finished with 7 points and 6 rebounds
about half his season average.
The loss was only their second in the last 12 games
for the Griffins (11-6, 3-1 PCN).
Mt. San Jacinto leads the PCN with an overall mark
of 15-3, 4-0.
Theyre pretty big and they have really
long arms, said Griffins head coach DOUG WEBER.
You dont get any cheap ones off those guys.
Grossmont made only 6 of 14 free throws.
You cant get away with shooting like that,
not against a team like Mt. San Jacinto , said
Weber. Once we fell behind early it was like changing
service. We couldnt make up any ground. They did
a nice job of guarding us, frustrating us.
Grossmont will face Mt. San Jacinto one more time as
they host the final game of the regular season on Friday
(Feb. 21).
In the meantime the Griffins will play the Pacific
Coast South teams in a crossover schedule. Their next
game will be at Southwestern on Friday (Jan. 24) at
7 p.m.

Griffins go triple-overtime, remain in first place
© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (1-18-14) It took three overtimes for
host Grossmont College to edge Palomar College 98-97
in Fridays (Jan. 17) Pacific Coast Athletic Conference
North encounter.
ALI MAJIDZADA, who missed the first free throw, hit
the second one for what proved to be the winning marker
with 5 seconds remaining in the final overtime as the
Griffins won for the 10th time in their last 11 starts.
The game was tied at 68-68 at the end of regulation
as the Griffins failed to hold a 4-point lead in the
final 26 seconds.
It was tied at 75 after the first overtime.
In the second overtime Palomar forged in front 80-75
as both teams were in foul trouble at this point. Thats
when Grossmonts MARK OGDEN took over. Ogden, who
finished with 35 points and 18 rebounds, then scored
4 of the next 5 markers to make it a 2-point game.
After a Palomar basket stretched the Comets advantage
to 4, TYSON KYGAR made a jump shot to slice the deficit
in half. Majidzada followed with a jump shot and an
and-one, giving the Griffins the lead.
But that wouldnt stand up as the Comets led 86-84
with 3 seconds left in the second overtime. Kygar then
hit two free throws to propel the game into the third
overtime.
Once again Palomar marched in front only to have Ogden
hit a jumper to tie it at 88-all. Kygar, who finished
with 24 points, 4 assists and 3 rebounds, sank a jumper
to regain the lead.
Ogden then followed that play by hitting 2 free throws
to make it a 4-point Griffins lead. The 6-foot-7 Ogden
was 13 of 14 from the free throw line, and 11 of 18
from the field. He made a resounding slam dunk, staking
the Griffins to a 94-90 advantage with 2:04 remaining.
But once again Palomar kept pecking away, cutting the
Griffins lead to 94-92 with 1:53 left.
Kygar countered for the Griffins with a free throw
and a layup, giving Grossmont a 5-point advantage with
26 seconds remaining.
Then it came down to Majidzada to the rescue.
BEN HAYES chipped in 12 points and 9 rebounds for Grossmont
(11-5, 3-0 PCAC-North).
Majidzada finished with 8 points and 5 rebounds, while
DARIUS JAMES contributed 7 points, 6 assists, 5 steals
and 2 blocks.
This game showed what kind of special group of
guys we have, said Griffins assistant coach JOHN
CLARK. We were in foul trouble at the end of regulation
and all the way through the overtimes, but our bench
came through for us, picked up the slack.
Grossmont will travel to Hemet to face Mt. San Jacinto
for the PCAC-North lead on Wednesday (Jan. 22).
Note: The triple-overtime was Grossmont's first since
nipping Mesa, 104-102, during the 2010-11 season. Before
that was a loss in four overtimes in a state playoff
contest at Santa Barbara City College in the 1990s.

KYGAR scored 29 points to lead visiting Grossmont
College to a 68-57 victory over the Miramar College
Jets in a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference North Division
match-up.
Kygar nailed a trio of 3-pointers, but the game wasnt
all about him.
We powered the ball inside against this team,
whose tallest player is 6-foot-4, said Griffins
assistant coach JOHN CLARK.
Six-foot-8 MARK
OGDEN landed 18 points and snagged 8 rebounds for
the Griffins, who have won nine of their last 10 games.
TIM PATRICK pitched in with 10 points and 6 rebounds
for Grossmont (2-0, 10-5), which is tied for the North
lead with Mt. San Jacinto .
The Griffins have won three straight and 9 of their
last 10 outings. Miramar fell to 2-1, 8-8.
The game was tied with the Jets at 29-29 by halftime.
We got a lot of stops and Tyson came alive,
Clark said. We were stacking up stops in the second
half and did a job of making quick breaks to the basket.
It was a completely different game after halftime.

Kygar leads Griffins in PCAC North
opener overMiraCosta, 69-61
By Bill Dickens
© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (1-9-14) TYSON KYGAR seems to excel
in pressure situations. That was the case when he was
a big-time scorer in high school at El Capitan and now
as sophomore at Grossmont College.
Im not as big a scorer up here (Grossmont),
understated Kygar, who leads the Griffins with a 21-plus
scoring average, assists and steals, yet hes proven
to be a more complete player for the Griffins (9-5).
Kygar led the Griffins with 19 points as they knocked
off visiting MiraCosta College, 69-61, in Wednesdays
(Jan. 8) opening game of Pacific Coast Athletic Conference
action.
Kygar nailed 7 of 12 shots from the field, including
a pair of treys as the Griffins led the Spartans coast-to-coast.
Grossmont could have shifted into cruise control much
earlier had it not made only 12 of 26 free throws.
Weve struggled at the free throw line all
year, said Kygar, who was 3 for 6 from the charity
stripe.
But he came up big when the game was on the line.
When it comes to crunch time I wanna be on the
free throw line and in position to take shots,
Kygar said.
Coach DOUG WEBER stationed Kygar at point guard when
the sophomore usually plays the shooting guard.
Im not sure if that was a great move or
not but the kid is so talented, we got away with it,
said Weber.
During his high school career it was routine for Kygar
to score 30-plus points. Those days have vanished.
Sometimes its my night to score 30 points
other times its not, Kygar said.
We have a lot of good shooters on this team and
Im not afraid to pass the ball to them.
Kygar scored the last 8 points for the Griffins.
Hes an unselfish player, Weber said
of Kygar. To him its not about how many
points he scores, its whether we win the game
or not. But one thing for sure is, hes better
off as our two-guard where he can catch and shoot.
MARK OGDEN added 16 points for the Griffins, hitting
8 of 19 shots from the field, grabbed 8 rebounds and
blocked 2 shots.
What do you remember about Ogden at Steele Canyon?
Weber quizzed. He was sitting on the end of the
bench. In his two years here hes grown 3 inches,
packed on 10 pounds and attracted colleges from all
over."
There were a handful of college representatives
here tonight to watch at least four of our kids, including
Ogden .
BEN HAYES added 9 points and 6 rebounds for the Griffins.
ANDRES JIMENEZ chipped in with 7 points and 5 rebounds.
Grossmont has a bye on Friday (Jan. 10) and will play
at Miramar College on Wednesday (Jan. 15) at 7 p.m.
Notes: The new-look PCAC is now split into a pair of
5-team divisions with the addition of Mt. SanJacinto
College of southwestern Riverside County. The Eagles
are joined in the North by the Griffins, MiraCosta,
Palomar and SDMiramar.

Ogden had a really good game, said Griffins

well matching bucket-for-bucket. The momentum

came in and had a key block.
Our whole bench saw action for the second night
in a row.
