Kirk strikes out 12 as SVLL beats champs

Two-out rally, error-free defense carry SVLL past Golden Hill, 2-0, in Southern California opener

ALISO VIEJO — Sweetwater Valley needed only one scoring opportunity Saturday because Noah Kirk made certain two runs would be enough.

Kirk struck out 12 without issuing a walk, and Sweetwater Valley scored twice with two outs in the second inning to defeat defending Southern California champion Golden Hill, 2-0, in the opening round of the Little League SoCal state tournament at Woodfield Park.

Kirk scattered five hits across six shutout innings, throwing 56 of his 80 pitches for strikes. Sweetwater Valley supported him with error-free defense and prevented Golden Hill from advancing a runner home despite several late opportunities.

The victory sends the Section 7 champion into Sunday’s 4 p.m. winner’s-bracket quarterfinal against Goleta Valley South.

Sweetwater Valley broke through in the bottom of the second after Golden Hill starter Micah Mankiewicz retired the first two batters.

Sebastian Pino and Templeton Tran kept the inning alive with hits. Asher Giglio then singled into right field to bring home Pino with the game’s first run.

Mateo Ruiz followed by putting the ball in play, and a Golden Hill error allowed Tran to score from second for a 2-0 advantage. SVLL subsequently loaded the bases before Golden Hill escaped the inning with a strikeout.

The two-out rally represented Sweetwater Valley’s only scoring, but four players contributed hits. Giglio, Jesus Cuadra, Pino and Tran each went 1-for-2, with Giglio collecting the game’s only RBI.

Mankiewicz allowed two hits and two unearned runs over two innings, striking out three without issuing a walk. Golden Hill’s pitching kept Sweetwater Valley scoreless over the final four innings, giving its offense repeated opportunities to close the deficit.

Kirk never surrendered the lead.

Golden Hill placed two runners aboard with one out in the top of the sixth following a pair of hits. Kirk answered by recording his final strikeout before inducing a ground ball to second.

Tran fielded it and threw to Cuadra at first for the final out, completing Sweetwater Valley’s shutout.

The defending champions finished with five hits but could not draw a walk or push a run across against Kirk and the SVLL defense.

Pino handled a team-high 13 defensive chances as Sweetwater Valley completed its opening victory without an error.

Tournament impact

Sweetwater Valley entered with championship expectations, and its first performance supported them against a proven opponent.

The offense did not produce the commanding run total that characterized its Section 7 run, but the level of competition changed considerably. Golden Hill won this tournament last summer and had already demonstrated resilience this postseason by recovering from a 1-0 sectional loss to reach the state field.

Sweetwater Valley still found the decisive opening, receiving four hits from four different players and scoring both runs with two outs. More importantly, SVLL showed it does not need an offensive outburst to defeat another championship-caliber team.

Kirk has been discussed as a potential tournament MVP candidate because of his two-way production throughout the postseason. On Saturday, his pitching carried the performance, but the victory also required Giglio’s RBI single, aggressive baserunning, consistent defense and the final combination of Tran and Cuadra.

After the opening round, Sweetwater Valley has presented the most complete combination of frontline pitching, defensive reliability and available staff depth among the teams that have played.

Sweetwater Valley advances to face Goleta Valley South

Sweetwater Valley meets Goleta Valley South at 4 p.m. Sunday in the winner’s-bracket quarterfinal.

Goleta Valley South received an opening-round bye after winning the Section 1 championship with a 1-0 victory over Conejo Valley. That result suggests another game in which pitching and defense could dictate the outcome.

Kirk will be unavailable Sunday after throwing 80 pitches, but his complete game allowed Sweetwater Valley to preserve the rest of its staff. Isaac Ramirez becomes an obvious option after striking out eight over four innings during section play. Ramirez has also supplied significant power, homering during victories over Imperial and Encanto.

Goleta Valley South will enter with its entire staff rested. Sweetwater Valley counters with tournament experience, a deeper documented pitching résumé and a lineup that has already faced the pressure of a state opener against the defending champion.

The lower score Saturday does not weaken Sweetwater Valley’s outlook. It demonstrated another way this team can win. SVLL remains the choice to advance, although Goleta Valley South’s rested pitching and recent 1-0 championship victory make another close game possible.

Golden Hill returns to familiar territory

Golden Hill moves into an elimination game Sunday at 1 p.m. against the loser of Saturday’s Rolling Hills–Glendora American quarterfinal.

The matchup could be severe if Glendora American loses. Glendora entered as one of the field’s strongest challengers, while Rolling Hills arrived with a lineup capable of producing power throughout the order.

Golden Hill should not be dismissed after one loss. It dropped its sectional opener to Long Beach, 1-0, before working through the elimination bracket to qualify for the state tournament. Saturday’s pitching was strong enough to win, and five hits against Kirk provided more offense than the final score suggests.

Its immediate problem is execution with runners aboard. Golden Hill received baserunners in multiple innings but could not produce the hit or free pass needed to break through. That must change Sunday, when one more loss would end its title defense.

San Diego representatives make opening statement

Sweetwater Valley and Scripps Ranch opened the state tournament with two victories over teams carrying championship credentials.

Scripps Ranch defeated highly regarded Eastvale, 5-1, behind Joshua Hornyak’s complete game and three-run triple. Sweetwater Valley followed by shutting out defending champion Golden Hill.

The victories were achieved differently. Scripps Ranch overturned its game with a five-run inning, while Sweetwater Valley protected an early two-run lead behind Kirk. Together, the results established both Section 6 and Section 7 as immediate championship contenders.
