Kirk, Gonzales and another dominant defensive performance carry SVLL to a 2-1 winner’s-bracket victory

ALISO VIEJO — Sweetwater Valley has reached the Southern California championship series by following the same formula that has carried it through the entire state tournament: frontline pitching, error-free defense and just enough timely offense.

Noah Kirk and Leo Gonzales helped contain another dangerous lineup Friday as Sweetwater Valley defeated Glendora American, 2-1, in the winner’s-bracket final at Woodfield Park.

Grant Mielke singled home the game’s first run in the opening inning, Kirk helped manufacture another in the third, and the SVLL pitching staff protected the narrow lead after Jackson Gonzalez homered for Glendora in the fourth.

Sweetwater Valley improved to 4-0 in the tournament and advanced directly to Sunday’s championship series at Al Houghton Stadium in San Bernardino.

SVLL needs one victory Sunday to capture the Southern California championship and advance to the four-team West Region tournament. The elimination-bracket survivor must defeat Sweetwater Valley twice.

Sweetwater strikes first

Sweetwater Valley established its advantage in the top of the first inning against Glendora starter Owen Albert.

Mielke delivered a run-scoring single to give SVLL a 1-0 lead. Sebastian Pino, who finished 2-for-2, helped keep pressure on Glendora throughout the game as Sweetwater accumulated six hits against Albert.

SVLL extended the lead in the third when Kirk put the ball in play with a runner in scoring position. Glendora recorded an out on the fielder’s choice, but the run scored for a 2-0 advantage.

That second run became decisive.

Gonzalez pulled Glendora within one by driving a solo home run over the right-field fence in the bottom of the fourth. It was the only damaging swing Glendora produced against a Sweetwater pitching staff that has now allowed only two runs across four state-tournament games.

Kirk and Gonzales protect the lead

Kirk worked the first two innings, allowing one hit and no runs. He struck out three and walked two while helping Sweetwater negotiate the early portion of Glendora’s established power lineup.

Gonzales provided 1⅔ scoreless innings later in the game, allowing one hit while striking out four without issuing a walk.

Glendora collected four hits from four different players, but Sweetwater Valley did not provide the additional baserunners needed to create a larger rally.

Pino handled a team-high nine defensive chances as SVLL completed another game without an error.

Albert gave Glendora an outstanding complete-game performance. He allowed two runs—only one earned—on six hits over six innings, striking out six and walking three.

His effort kept Glendora within one swing of tying the game throughout the final three innings, but Sweetwater’s pitching and defense refused to surrender the equalizer.

Tournament impact

Sweetwater Valley has now defeated four accomplished section champions by a combined score of 12-2.

SVLL opened with a 2-0 victory over defending Southern California champion Golden Hill behind Kirk’s 12-strikeout complete game. Isaac Ramirez and Gonzales then combined on a three-hit shutout in a 6-0 victory over Goleta Valley South.

Sweetwater defeated nationally ranked Encino, 2-1, in the winner’s-bracket semifinal. Gonzales hit the decisive two-run home run and then pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Julian Sevilla.

Friday brought another 2-1 victory against Glendora, a team that entered with one of the field’s deepest offensive résumés and had already defeated Rolling Hills and Scripps Ranch.

The run totals have been modest since the 6-0 victory over Goleta, but that has not reduced Sweetwater’s control of the tournament. SVLL has demonstrated that one early scoring opportunity may be sufficient because its pitching staff and defense have repeatedly made narrow leads stand.

Kirk, Ramirez, Gonzales and Sevilla have supplied different pieces of the pitching plan. Mielke, Pino, Templeton Tran, Asher Giglio, Jesus Cuadra, James Griffin and others have contributed to an offense that has produced the necessary runs without depending upon one hitter.

Sweetwater Valley entered Aliso Viejo with championship expectations. Four games later, it has done more than validate them.

Glendora remains alive

The loss sends Glendora American into the elimination-bracket final, but it does not end its tournament.

Glendora has the pitching, power and tournament resilience to earn another opportunity against Sweetwater Valley. Albert’s complete game also prevented Glendora from exhausting multiple pitchers in defeat.

Gonzalez’s home run provided further evidence that Glendora remains dangerous even when its lineup is being controlled. Matthew Marquez, Francisco Herrera, Dominic Jacalone, Jackson Fraijo and Jackson Ochoa have all contributed during the tournament, giving Glendora several possible sources of offense.

To reach Sunday, however, Glendora must survive the elimination bracket and then prepare for the possibility of playing Sweetwater twice in the championship series.

Next for Sweetwater Valley

Sweetwater Valley advances to the Southern California championship series Sunday at Al Houghton Stadium.

The first championship game is scheduled for 4 p.m. If Sweetwater loses, an if-necessary game would follow at 7 p.m.

SVLL’s winner’s-bracket position is enormously valuable. It needs only one victory, enters with its first opportunity to rest and reset during the tournament, and can prepare for multiple possible opponents while the remaining contenders continue through elimination play.

The eventual Southern California champion will open the West Region tournament against Northern California champion San Ramon Valley on Sunday, Aug. 9.

Arizona champion Chandler National and Hawaii champion Kawaihau Community will meet in the other opening-round game.

Sweetwater Valley is now one victory from joining that field—and one tournament from Williamsport.
