Peterson scores only points in 2-0 triumph

Vaqueros defense makes rare two-point score stand in season-opening victory

LAKESIDE — El Capitan senior linebacker Azaria Peterson scored the game’s only points on a safety as the Vaqueros opened the season with a 2-0 nonleague victory over Eastlake on Tuesday.

El Capitan senior quarterback Kailynn Bonner completed 17 of 27 passes for 185 yards.

Senior Gabriella Jackson led the receiving corps with five catches for 67 yards, while sophomore Raelynne Merriman added four receptions for 44 yards.

Senior Sofia Simone caught three passes for 24 yards for El Capitan.

Senior Sasha Parker and junior Mikaela Valencia each finished with two receptions for 18 yards, while junior Kennedy O’Neil added a 14-yard catch for the Vaqueros.

Although the Vaqueros were unable to turn those yards into an offensive touchdown, Peterson and the El Capitan defense made sure two points were enough.

Senior linebacker Audra Guillory recorded two sacks and two flag pulls for El Capitan.

Junior safety Kailey Joralemon intercepted a pass and led El Capitan with four flag pulls.

Senior defensive back Lynette Casarrubias and junior defensive back Mackenzie Klemp collected three flag pulls apiece. Peterson added two, with junior Lily Murphy and junior Alina Torrance-Guignard contributing one each.

Eastlake finished with 143 yards of offense but completed only 5 of 16 passes and threw an interception.

Freshman Natalie Guevara completed 3 of 6 passes for 24 yards and rushed five times for a team-high 46 yards. Freshman Kamel-Lei Smigmator completed 2 of 10 passes for 24 yards and carried six times for 22 yards.

Junior Isabelle Taylor-Dixon added 27 yards on three carries. Senior Anna Schmitz made a 21-yard reception, while senior Khloe Manuel had a 10-yard catch.

Eastlake intercepted Bonner twice and totaled 24 flag pulls. Junior Citlali Garcia and sophomore Roxie Quintero led the Titans with five flag pulls each, while senior Gianna Juarez added four.

The Vaqueros’ defense ultimately delivered the decisive play, turning Peterson’s safety into one of the most unusual victories of the young season.

El Capitan defeated Eastlake last season, 19-7, as part of a 6-1 start.

Olympian hands El Capitan a 13-9 setback

LAKESIDE — El Capitan generated 287 yards of offense and produced another safety Thursday, but Olympian held off the Vaqueros for a 13-9 nonleague victory.

Senior athlete Gabriella Jackson accounted for seven points, catching El Capitan’s only touchdown and adding a conversion. Jackson finished with six receptions for 67 yards.

Senior linebacker Audra Guillory produced the Vaqueros’ other two points with a safety, giving El Capitan safeties in consecutive games. Guillory also dominated defensively with nine flag pulls, four sacks and four flag pulls for loss.

Junior Mikaela Valencia completed 7 of 12 passes for 87 yards, while senior Kailynn Bonner went 12-for-27 for 135 yards. The two quarterbacks combined for 222 passing yards.

Junior Kennedy O’Neil caught four passes for 52 yards, senior Sasha Parker had four receptions for 40 yards and senior Sofia Simone added a 26-yard catch. Parker also led the rushing attack with 35 yards on three carries.

El Capitan’s defense recorded five sacks and two interceptions. Junior Lily Murphy contributed a sack and a flag pull for loss, while junior safety Kailey Joralemon and sophomore linebacker Raelynn McAhren each made an interception.
