Cougars win three at Saturday tourney

Carpenter powers Steele Canyon; Foothills Christian earns sweep

Steele Canyon won three of five tournament matches Saturday as junior Taylor Carpenter produced 47 kills and 30 digs during a busy opening day for the Cougars.

Steele Canyon swept Clairemont and Central Union and defeated East County rival Foothills Christian in three sets. The Cougars’ two losses came in three-set matches against Oceanside and Mission Bay.

Carpenter was Steele Canyon’s most consistent offensive threat, averaging 3.6 kills per set while hitting .416 across the five matches. She added nine aces and six blocks to her 47 kills and 30 digs.

Her best statistical performance came in the Cougars’ loss to Mission Bay. Carpenter recorded 13 kills on 22 attacks with only two errors for a .500 hitting percentage. She also supplied nine digs.

Junior Crisa Garcia finished the tournament with 27 kills and 27 digs. Garcia recorded 10 kills and seven digs in the sweep of Clairemont before producing six errorless kills in the three-set match against Oceanside.

Sophomore Roxy Carrillo anchored the back row with 44 digs over the five matches. Sophomores Leah Heinen and Natalia Santana handled most of the setting duties, while junior Izzy Trotto and sophomore Holly Ordway each accumulated 12 blocks.

COUGARS HOLD OFF KNIGHTS

Steele Canyon took the opening set from Foothills Christian, 25-18, before the Knights answered with a 25-23 victory. The Cougars secured the match by winning the deciding set, 15-9.

Carpenter led Steele Canyon with 10 kills, 13 digs and six aces. Senior Tiana Baker added seven kills with a .500 hitting percentage, while senior Macie Sicat finished with five kills.

The Cougars hit .325 and recorded 33 kills in the victory.

Steele Canyon delivered its most efficient attacking performance against Central Union. The Cougars finished with 20 kills and only two errors for a .409 hitting percentage in the two-set sweep.

Carpenter had six kills on 10 attacks, junior Kate Ryan contributed five kills without an error and Baker put away three of her four attempts.

KNIGHTS SPLIT PAIR OF SWEEPS

Foothills Christian finished 1-2 in its three reported tournament matches.

The Knights defeated Central Union, 25-17, 25-16, before falling to Steele Canyon in three sets. Mission Bay also defeated Foothills Christian, 25-20, 25-23.

Foothills Christian moved to 2-2 overall after opening its season Thursday with a three-set victory over Holtville.
