MATADORS’ NEW CORE READY TO EMERGE
Simon takes over Mount Miguel program with more returning promise than its unusual offseason allowed outsiders to see
SPRING VALLEY (8-20-26) — Mount Miguel may be the most difficult team in East County to evaluate entering the 2026 season—but that does not necessarily mean the Matadors should be overlooked.
The uncertainty is understandable. Verlain Betofe departed after transforming Mount Miguel into a county power, and several prominent players followed out the door. An initially selected successor subsequently stepped aside before coaching a game, leading the Matadors to turn to former El Cajon Valley head coach James Simon.
Betofe inherited a program that had struggled to find sustained postseason success and promptly changed its trajectory. Mount Miguel went 29-9 in three seasons, won the 2023 Grossmont Valley League championship and captured the CIF San Diego Section Division IV title. Even after his departure, the confidence, standards and winning expectations established during that run should not disappear overnight.
Simon’s first task is to preserve that foundation while allowing a new group of Matadors to establish its own identity.
Senior Dominic Lopez provides the defense with a proven centerpiece. Lopez recorded a team-leading 72 tackles and two sacks last season and should again be a major presence at inside linebacker. He also figures to receive an expanded role in the running game.
Junior Enrique Gonzalez appears ready to take command at quarterback, while junior athlete Cayden “Prince” Mobley gives him an explosive primary target. Sophomore David Watt offers additional speed at running back and receiver and could become especially dangerous in the return game.
The line will be critical for a team replacing considerable experience. Junior Ivan Williams, sophomore Brandon Reed and sophomore defensive end Kalani Tausaga headline the group expected to hold things together up front. Blue-Knight Johnson, Kenyon Littleton, Nathaniel Tausaga and Deion Hayden add more size and depth to a roster containing only 11 seniors.
Mount Miguel will open Friday at Montgomery before facing University City, Torrey Pines, Poway, Linfield Christian and Patrick Henry outside league play. The Grossmont Hills League schedule brings Helix, Granite Hills, Grossmont and Steele Canyon.
The Matadors may not begin the season with the attention surrounding recent Mount Miguel teams. Given the late coaching transition and departed standouts, that is understandable.
But enough talent remains to suggest that the preseason uncertainty may say more about what outsiders did not know than what Mount Miguel no longer has.
