Patriots’ Carvajal shines; Cougars survive ranked Marauders; Norsemen handle Foothillers

Patrick Henry’s young attack powered the Patriots past Santana, while Steele Canyon answered a two-set comeback by Mira Mesa and Valhalla opened Grossmont Conference action with a sweep Wednesday.

PATRICK HENRY 3, SANTANA 0

SAN DIEGO — Freshman Mariana Carvajal put down 11 kills while hitting .409 as Patrick Henry swept Santana in Wednesday’s nonconference match.

The Patriots improved to 5-2 behind a balanced performance that included 35 kills, 34 assists, 12 aces and 44 digs.

Junior Natalie Rynard directed the offense with 24 assists while adding six digs, three kills and two blocks. Sophomore Ashlan Daniels converted five of seven attacks for a .571 hitting percentage and contributed two blocks.

Senior Ada Parker collected seven digs and three aces, junior Leah Gonzalez led Henry with nine digs, and junior Taylor Gonzalez finished with five kills and seven digs.

Patrick Henry committed only four service errors on 73 attempts, finishing with a 94.5-percent serving rate.

Santana fell to 2-2.

STEELE CANYON 3, MIRA MESA 2

SAN DIEGO — Steele Canyon built a two-set advantage, weathered a comeback and took control of the deciding set to defeat Mira Mesa, 25-19, 25-21, 23-25, 17-25, 15-10.

The Cougars improved to 10-4 with their seventh victory in eight matches.

Junior Taylor Carpenter powered the attack with 23 kills, a .321 hitting percentage, seven digs and three blocks. Kylie Ryan added seven kills while hitting .429, but Steele Canyon’s work at the net supplied the match’s defining advantage.

The Cougars recorded 24 blocks to Mira Mesa’s five. Seniors Tiana Baker and junior Izzy Trotto finished with six blocks apiece, while Ryan added five.

Baker also served four aces without an error in 22 attempts. Natalia Santana distributed 22 assists, Lauren Heinen had 18 assists, nine digs and three aces, and Roxy Carrillo led the defense with 15 digs.

Steele Canyon finished with 44 kills, 16 aces, 55 digs and 43 assists. Mira Mesa received 21 digs and two aces from Layna Vanhuang but fell to 4-3.

VALHALLA 3, GROSSMONT 0

EL CAJON — Senior Jordann Bollens delivered nine kills, 24 digs and four aces as Valhalla swept Grossmont in a Grossmont Conference matchup.

The Norsemen hit .250 as a team, served 15 aces and accumulated 78 digs while improving to 3-5.

Junior Audrey Reece produced an all-around line of three kills, seven aces, 10 digs and one block. She landed 23 of 24 serves and accounted for 20 service points.

Senior Finley Ryan contributed five kills on nine attempts, hit .444 and recorded two blocks. Freshman Valerie Toma added five kills, 21 digs and two aces, while junior Vanessa Moscoso collected 15 digs.

Senior Trianne Nguyentu handled all 26 of Valhalla’s assists.

Grossmont junior Imani Hayes led the Foothillers with 15 kills and eight digs. Sophomore Sofia Reid added nine kills, senior Jacqueline Villalobos distributed 22 assists, and senior Ciarrah Doliente recorded 12 digs and three aces.

Grossmont dropped to 0-5.

MOUNT MIGUEL 3, KEARNY 1

SAN DIEGO — Mount Miguel earned its second victory in as many nights by defeating Kearny in four sets.

The Matadors swept Crawford, 25-8, 25-9, 25-13, on Tuesday before returning to the court and winning six of seven sets across the two matches.

Mount Miguel improved to 3-4. Individual statistics and Wednesday’s set scores were not reported.

FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 3, ROCK ACADEMY 0

SAN DIEGO — Foothills Christian improved to 6-3 with a road sweep of Rock Academy in conference play.

POWAY 3, HELIX 0

LA MESA — Poway handed Helix its first loss of the season with a 25-19, 25-16, 25-17 sweep.

Gracyn Gregg led the Titans with seven kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Audrey Christensen added four kills and two blocks.

Poway finished with 13 aces and 47 digs while improving to 2-5. Helix fell to 3-1.

SAN YSIDRO 3, EL CAJON VALLEY 0

EL CAJON — San Ysidro defeated El Cajon Valley, 25-10, 25-20, 25-10.

Natalia Marmolejo led the Cougars with eight kills and was selected as their player of the match. San Ysidro registered 25 kills, 19 aces, 37 digs and 24 assists.

Olive Melendez led El Cajon Valley with four kills on eight attacks, a .500 hitting percentage and two blocks. Aleanor Marcus also had four kills for the Braves, who fell to 0-4.

AROUND EAST COUNTY

Coastal Academy swept Liberty Charter, 3-0. The Lions’ individual statistics and set scores were not reported.

No final score was reported for Monte Vista’s scheduled match against Gompers Prep Academy.

TUESDAY RECAP

RAMONA 3, MOUNTAIN EMPIRE 1

RAMONA — Senior Tayler Brownler Brown filled the scoresheet with 11 kills, five aces, 17 digs and 12 assists as Ramona defeated Mountain Empire in four sets.

Brown led or shared the Bulldogs’ lead in all four categories.

Sophomore Aviana Burnett had six kills while hitting .625, sophomore Alexandra Mulrooney added six kills with a .556 hitting percentage and two blocks, and freshman Olivia Wenberg contributed seven kills and three aces.

Ramona hit .256 and recorded 15 aces while improving to 4-6. Mountain Empire fell to 2-2.

MOUNT MIGUEL 3, CRAWFORD 0

SPRING VALLEY — Mount Miguel controlled Crawford from start to finish in a 25-8, 25-9, 25-13 sweep.

The Matadors allowed only 30 points across the three sets.

HOLTVILLE 3, WEST HILLS 2

SANTEE — West Hills rebounded from a first-set loss and dominated the next two frames, but Holtville recovered to defeat the Wolf Pack, 25-15, 15-25, 7-25, 25-22, 15-8.

The Wolf Pack fell to 7-3.

CLAIREMONT 3, GROSSMONT 0

EL CAJON — Junior Imani Hayes finished with 15 kills and eight digs in Grossmont’s straight-set loss to Clairemont.

Sofia Reid added nine kills, Jacqueline Villalobos recorded 22 assists, and Ciarrah Doliente supplied 12 digs and three aces for the Foothillers.

EASTLAKE 3, CHRISTIAN 1

EL CAJON — Eastlake defeated Christian in four sets, dropping the Patriots to 2-6.
