Gibbs scores four times as Grossmont grounds San Pasqual

ESCONDIDO — Helix Charter quarterback Vida Sanchez delivered one of the greatest passing performances in San Diego Section history Saturday (Sept. 12), throwing for 458 yards and eight touchdowns as the Highlanders outlasted Classical Academy, 55-52.
The teams combined for 107 points, establishing a CIF San Diego Section record for the highest-scoring girls flag football game.
Sanchez completed 21 of 26 passes while averaging nearly 22 yards per completion. The senior also rushed for 84 yards and converted a pair of extra-point attempts.
Kaiya Merlo and Myliya Johnson nearly matched each other during an extraordinary afternoon for the Helix receivers.
Merlo collected nine passes for 204 yards and four touchdowns, including a 66-yard scoring reception. Johnson added nine catches for 198 yards and three touchdowns, with her longest reception covering 47 yards.
Nikayla Domingo accounted for the other score, finishing with three receptions for 50 yards and a touchdown.
Despite surrendering 52 points, the Helix defense made enough plays to preserve the victory. Samaya Webb-Horsley recorded two sacks among her six flag pulls, Samara Patterson led the Scotties with seven stops and Merlo added an interception to her four-touchdown performance.
Helix finished with 544 yards of total offense in the historic victory.

Grossmont 38, San Pasqual 12
EL CAJON — Mariyah Gibbs accounted for four touchdowns while Grossmont’s defense intercepted six passes, sending the Foothillers past San Pasqual, 38-12, during Saturday’s East County-North County showcase.
Gibbs caught five passes for 126 yards and three touchdowns, including a 64-yard reception. The junior also carried five times for 28 yards and another score, finishing with 154 yards from scrimmage.
Grossmont utilized three quarterbacks, who combined to throw for 293 yards and four touchdowns.
Nevaeh Manely completed 8 of 11 attempts for 91 yards and a touchdown. Khilee Haull connected on 3 of 6 passes for 107 yards and two scores, while Saraya Roope added 95 passing yards and one TD.
Miley Christenson caught three passes for 26 yards and a touchdown. Yesibela Krauss added 14 rushing yards and another score.
The Foothillers were even more disruptive on defense. Sophomore Sydney Souza and junior Christina Grande recorded three interceptions apiece, giving Grossmont six takeaways through the air.
Grande also led the Foothillers with nine flag pulls, followed by Ari Simpson with eight. Emma Hernandez recorded a 15-yard sack.
Grossmont generated 363 yards of total offense while winning its third consecutive game.
Rancho Buena Vista 33, Valhalla 25
EL CAJON — Valhalla quarterback Natalia Marco threw four touchdown passes without an interception, but Rancho Buena Vista held off the Norsemen, 33-25, Saturday.
Marco completed 29 of 51 passes for 266 yards and added 55 yards on six rushing attempts.
Alaina Yatooma supplied the biggest plays for Valhalla, catching seven passes for 138 yards and a touchdown. Her longest reception covered 30 yards.
Penelope Lathen led the Norsemen with 12 receptions for 73 yards and a score. Emma Sloan added six catches for 34 yards and a touchdown, while Mina Al Jabbari scored on her lone reception.
Yatooma also collected an extra-point conversion for Valhalla.
Oceanside 13, Santana 6
EL CAJON — Hailee Powell caught Santana’s lone touchdown pass as Oceanside edged the Sultans, 13-6, Saturday.
Quarterback Ava Darling completed 24 of 43 passes for 141 yards and a score. Powell led Santana with six receptions for 65 yards, while Khloe Vickery added six catches for 39 yards.
Breezy Udvarhelyi finished with five receptions for 37 yards. Freshman Savannah Compton added four catches, while fellow freshman Layla Curtin collected three.
Kaylah Sanchez led Santana’s defense with seven flag pulls. Ava Brehm added five, while Powell, Udvarhelyi and Kaylin Davis registered four apiece. Lacy Leath recorded the Sultans’ lone sack.
TUESDAY’S GAMES
Valley Center 32, Steele Canyon 31 (4 OT)
VALLEY CENTER — Steele Canyon and Valley Center battled through four overtimes Tuesday (Sept. 8), establishing the Grossmont Conference record for the longest girls flag football game.
The Jaguars finally escaped with a 32-31 victory.
Regan Jones led Steele Canyon with 79 rushing yards and two touchdowns on five carries. She also completed 2 of 5 passes for 43 yards and another score.
Kallan Shaw completed 6 of 15 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown, while Adanya Huston caught two passes for 77 yards and both of the Cougars’ receiving scores. Huston’s longest reception covered 66 yards.
Evie Allison rushed six times for 34 yards and a touchdown. Jones added three receptions for 41 yards, and Allicia Lambert contributed a 32-yard reception.
Giselle Zakar powered the Steele Canyon defense with three sacks. Huston and Dayana Nevarez-Rosas each recorded an interception.
El Capitan 54, Monte Vista 12
SPRING VALLEY — El Capitan erupted for a season-high 54 points in a 54-12 non-league triumph over host Monte Vista.
The Vaqueros improved to 5-4 with the victory, while Monte Vista slipped to 1-4.
Ramona 39, Sage Creek 0
CARLSBAD — Ramona quarterback Elisa Gaines threw five touchdown passes as the Bulldogs overwhelmed host Sage Creek, 39-0, in Palomar League action.
Gaines completed 18 of 33 passes for 170 yards without throwing an interception.
Remingtyn Bryant led the Bulldogs with five receptions for 66 yards and a touchdown.
Ramona scored six points in the opening quarter, added 14 in the second and put up 13 more in the third before completing the shutout with a final touchdown in the fourth period.
Scripps Ranch 32, Patrick Henry 0
SCRIPPS RANCH — Scripps Ranch scored 32 unanswered points during the middle two quarters to blank Patrick Henry, 32-0, in Western League action.
Falcons quarterback Ashley Koba completed 15 of 24 passes for 110 yards and three touchdowns. Malia Kollmeyer caught six passes for 60 yards and a score.
After a scoreless opening period, Scripps Ranch posted 12 points in the second quarter and 20 in the third.
Forfeit and cancellations
El Cajon Valley was awarded a forfeit victory over Mar Vista after the Mariners were unable to field enough players to safely conduct the game.
The Helix-Olympian contest was canceled.
Mountain Empire’s scheduled game against E3 Civic Charter at Dolores Magdaleno Memorial Recreation Center also was canceled.
The Escondido-Santana game was canceled because of excessive heat.
