Borrego Springs breaks through with 52–16 victory

BORREGO SPRINGS — After three difficult weeks, Borrego Springs found room to run, touchdowns through the air and a reason to celebrate.

The Rams earned their first victory of the season Friday, Sept. 25, defeating visiting San Jacinto Leadership Academy, 52–16, in an eight-man nonleague football game.

Borrego had scored just 21 points combined in losses to Francis Parker, River Springs Charter and St. Joseph Academy. Against the Lions, the Rams surpassed that total before halftime, building a 36–8 lead on the way to improving to 1–3.

Alexis Urquidez threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score. He completed 4 of 6 passes for 113 yards and added 48 yards rushing.

Cameron Campbell needed just three carries to produce 83 yards and a touchdown. He also returned two kickoffs for 75 yards, finishing with 158 all-purpose yards.

Both of Maurico Rodriguez’s receptions went for touchdowns, covering a combined 58 yards. Humberto Torres Arias added a 52-yard touchdown reception as Borrego finished with seven touchdowns and 219 rushing yards.

The Rams made their presence felt defensively, too.

Torres Arias recorded 14 tackles, including four for losses and two sacks. Rodriguez had 11 tackles, five for losses and three sacks. Jorge Torres Arias contributed 12 tackles and 1½ sacks, while Campbell added 11 tackles.

Borrego was credited with seven sacks and 16 tackles for losses.

The Rams now head into their Manzanita League schedule with a victory behind them. They visit Warner on Friday, Oct. 2, at 3:30 p.m., then return home to face West Shores on Oct. 9.

JULIAN 22, SAN PASQUAL ACADEMY 0 — Julian continued its strong start with a road shutout Thursday, Sept. 24, improving to 3–1.

Coming off a 40–6 victory over Warner, the Eagles have allowed just six points over their last two games. Their three victories this season have each come by at least 22 points.

San Pasqual Academy fell to 1–1 after opening its season with a 40–18 victory over Warner.

Julian travels to West Shores on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. The Dragons’ next scheduled game is a home meeting with Warner on Oct. 9 at 4 p.m.

ST. JOSEPH ACADEMY — The Crusaders remain unbeaten at 4–0, with their most recent victory a 60–6 decision over Borrego Springs on Sept. 18.

St. Joseph Academy has scored at least 50 points in three of its four games. Its other victories came against River Springs Charter, Santa Clarita Christian and Cornerstone Christian.

The San Marcos school returns to action Oct. 2 against visiting Mammoth at 7 p.m.

FRANCIS PARKER 41, POLYTECHNIC 8 — The Lancers improved to 5–0 with Saturday’s victory in Pasadena, handing Polytechnic its first loss.

Parker has allowed just 22 points this season. The Lancers’ schedule includes victories over Borrego Springs and West Shores, along with a recorded forfeit victory over Julian.

Parker’s next scheduled game is Oct. 9 at home against Julian at 6 p.m.

WARNER / WEST SHORES — Both programs will be looking for their first victories when Manzanita opponents arrive Friday.

Warner enters its home game against Borrego Springs at 0–3. Last week’s scheduled meeting with Lucerne Valley was recorded as a 2–0 forfeit loss.

West Shores, 0–4, hosts Julian before traveling to Borrego Springs the following week.
