Griffins sweep Coyotes, eye .500 record

EL CAJON — Grossmont College has a chance to finish September back at .500 after taking care of business against its district neighbor, the Cuyamaca Coyotes.

The Griffins swept Cuyamaca, 25-19, 25-13, 25-23, Friday, Sept. 25, earning their second consecutive conference victory and improving to 6-7 overall and 2-1 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference.

Grossmont returns home to face San Diego Miramar on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 6 p.m.

Jessica Meda led the Griffins with nine kills in the meeting between the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District’s two programs.

Rachael Ashburn and Shalynn Copes supplied seven kills apiece, with Ashburn hitting .357 on 14 attempts.

Alicia Bustmante contributed 14 assists, five digs and two service aces. Samantha Sabaot added 11 assists and six digs.

Tatum Lawton collected 10 digs, while Taya Vincient finished with five kills and nine digs.

Grossmont won the opening two sets comfortably before Cuyamaca pushed the third to a two-point margin. The Coyotes finished with 21 kills against 22 attack errors, while the Griffins recorded 33 kills and a .217 hitting percentage.

The victory gives first-year head coach Kara Barkdoll Coy’s team four wins in its last six matches.

Following Wednesday’s Miramar match, Grossmont hosts San Diego City on Friday, Oct. 2, at 6 p.m.

CUYAMACA: Local players lead Coyotes

Cuyamaca fell to 2-8 overall and 1-3 in conference, but several familiar East County players contributed against the Griffins.

Former West Hills standout Siena Davis led the Coyotes with seven kills and 10 digs. Fellow West Hills graduate Fernanda Leon added six kills and seven digs.

Daniella Ronquillo, a Valhalla graduate, collected 15 digs, while former Grossmont High setter Xenaya Carpenter supplied 17 assists and eight digs.

The Coyotes earned their first conference victory Sept. 18, sweeping San Diego City, 25-21, 25-18, 25-23.

Carpenter directed that victory with 20 assists, eight digs and two aces. Ronquillo contributed 13 digs and three aces, and former Helix player Aria Imran added 10 digs and two aces.

Leon finished with five kills and 11 digs against City. Freshman Vera Wallace, from Montgomery High, led the attack with seven kills and a .312 hitting percentage, while Nalani Morris delivered four kills without an error in nine attempts.

Cuyamaca served 10 aces in the victory, its second sweep of the season following a Sept. 2 win at Los Angeles City.

The Coyotes visit Southwestern on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 5 p.m., then host San Diego Mesa on Friday, Oct. 2, at 6 p.m.

Grossmont and Cuyamaca meet again Oct. 28 at Grossmont.
