Grossmont Valley League

EL CAJON VALLEY 12, WEST HILLS 6

EL CAJON — The aspect of El Cajon Valley’s game trending most decisively in the right direction is its defensive unit.

Earlier this season, a pair of ill-advised mistakes nearly cost the Braves a victory over West Hills. In Tuesday’s (Oct. 20) rematch, however, the Grossmont Valley League championship was at stake.

And ECVHS — something rarely stated during the school’s long athletic history — came through to secure at least a share of the crown.

In a near mirror image of the first meeting in Santee, won by the Braves, 13-6, the rematch ended with another one-score El Cajon Valley victory, 12-6.

El Cajon Valley (12-7 overall) completed league play with a 6-2 record and will finish its regular-season schedule Thursday with a non-league home contest against Christian.

Meanwhile, West Hills (9-6 overall) must defeat visiting Valhalla on Thursday to match the Braves’ league record and earn a share of the championship.

Game highlights

Led by an interception from Skye Ferris and a quarterback sack by Osmara Serna — both sophomores — El Cajon Valley limited West Hills to fewer than 200 yards of total offense and a single touchdown.

The Braves’ big-play offense was directed by Natalie Flores, who completed 11 of 19 passes for 267 yards, averaging an exceptional 24.3 yards per completion. It was the second-highest passing total of her career, trailing only her 282-yard performance against Valhalla.

Flores connected with Kaylanii Moore for a 68-yard touchdown. Her other explosive completions included a pair of 40-yard passes, one each to McKinley Morgan and Moore.

Ferris also scored on a touchdown run and led the Braves in rushing.

West Hills did not report individual statistics or additional game information.

Grossmont Hills League

HELIX 35, EL CAPITAN 7

LAKESIDE — Helix overwhelmed host El Capitan, 35-7, moving within one victory of completing a perfect run through the Grossmont Hills League.

The Scotties clinched the league championship last week.

Helix (15-1 overall, 7-0 GHL) extended its East County-record winning streak to 10 games. The Scotties are also in contention for one of the top Open Division seeds when the CIF San Diego Section playoff brackets are announced Saturday.

No individual statistics or additional game information were reported.

GROSSMONT 26, GRANITE HILLS 25

FLETCHER HILLS — Following a slow start to the season, Grossmont may be the hottest program in East County — other than Helix — after nipping visiting Granite Hills, 26-25, at Lt. Mitchell Memorial Stadium.

The Foothillers (12-7 overall) avenged an earlier 26-6 loss to the Eagles. Grossmont had scored only one touchdown during its first three Grossmont Hills League contests but has since surged back into contention for second place.

Should Grossmont defeat El Capitan in Thursday’s regular-season finale — coupled with a Helix victory over Steele Canyon — the Foothillers, Eagles and Cougars would finish in a three-way tie for second place.

Grossmont has won four of its past six games.

Individual statistics and additional game information were not reported by press time.

Western League

CATHEDRAL CATHOLIC 32, PATRICK HENRY 14

SAN CARLOS — Patrick Henry defenders Tayte Miller and Isabelle Schaefer recorded interceptions, but visiting Cathedral Catholic built a 20-point halftime cushion and captured Tuesday’s (Oct. 20) Western League contest, 32-14.

Dons quarterback Sabrina Jutronich fired four touchdown passes, including two to Emma Valdivia.

Meanwhile, Astrid Nova collected three of Cathedral Catholic’s six interceptions.

Cathedral Catholic (13-7 overall, 8-4 WL) secured third place behind league champion Mira Mesa (10-2) and runner-up Scripps Ranch (9-3).

Patrick Henry (8-10, 3-9) finished sixth among the Western League’s seven schools.
