Eagles soar to win; Hillers down Sultans

EL CAJON — Granite Hills quarterback Taylor Nash fired four touchdown passes, while Emily Fong scored twice and intercepted three passes as the Eagles overwhelmed Point Loma, 32-7, Thursday (Sept. 3) at Valley Stadium.

The victory was Granite Hills’ second straight following a 1-3 start and lifted the Eagles to 3-3.

Nash completed 17 of 22 passes for 185 yards and four touchdowns and added a rushing touchdown. The junior connected twice with Katie Petrich, who finished with seven receptions for 76 yards and two touchdowns.

Fong caught eight passes for 65 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, she intercepted three passes and returned them for 33 yards.

Senior Brooklyn Spencer rushed nine times for 61 yards and converted an extra-point attempt. Isabella Connor paced the Eagles with four flag pulls.

Point Loma entered the contest with a 5-1 record but could not overcome three turnovers. Pointers quarterback Emma Rosenberg completed 12 of 21 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown but was intercepted twice.

Eva Cruz rushed seven times for 118 yards, while Charlotte Klaus caught five passes for 76 yards.

Granite Hills will host Poway on Thursday (Sept. 10) at 5:30 p.m.

Grossmont 26, Santana 20

SANTEE — Grossmont erased an eight-point second-half deficit by scoring 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to edge Santana, 26-20, at Santee Community Stadium.

The Sultans led 6-0 after the first quarter, 14-6 at halftime and 20-12 entering the final period before the Foothillers mounted their comeback.

Senior Saraya Roope turned in a remarkable all-around performance for Grossmont. Roope completed 5 of 11 passes for 154 yards and three touchdowns, caught seven passes for 66 yards and a score, recorded eight flag pulls and intercepted three passes.

Her three interceptions matched the Grossmont Conference single-game record reached earlier in the week by Santana’s Gabby Sneddon and El Capitan’s Kailey Joralemon.

Roope returned her interceptions for 73 yards and also converted a pair of extra-point attempts.

Khilee Haull shared the quarterback duties, completing 12 of 23 passes for 142 yards. Ari Simpson caught three passes for 83 yards and a touchdown, including a 56-yard reception.

Haull added a 62-yard touchdown catch, while Leah Garcia recorded a 25-yard scoring reception.

Mariyah Gibbs supplied 73 rushing yards on six carries.

Grossmont’s defense intercepted seven passes. In addition to Roope’s three thefts, Nevaeh Manely collected two, while Garcia and Christina Grande had one apiece. Emma Hernandez recorded the Foothillers’ lone sack.

Grossmont improved to 3-3, while Santana fell to 2-3.

Steele Canyon 31, Classical Academy 14

ESCONDIDO — Five different players scored touchdowns as Steele Canyon broke out offensively in a 31-14 road victory over Classical Academy.

Kallan Shaw completed 9 of 25 passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns. Giselle Zakar caught a 60-yard touchdown pass, while Danica Mummert collected three receptions for 26 yards and another score.

The Cougars also reached the end zone on the ground three times. Evie Allison rushed three times for 60 yards, including a 32-yard touchdown run. Livia Allison gained 21 yards and scored on four carries, while Regan Jones added another rushing touchdown.

Zakar led an aggressive Steele Canyon defense with six flag pulls and three sacks for 23 yards in losses. Livia Allison recorded seven pulls and another sack.

Steele Canyon improved to 4-4 while ending Classical Academy’s six-game home winning streak dating to last season.

Classical Academy quarterback Ella Moore accounted for 316 yards of offense, passing for 259 yards and a touchdown while rushing seven times for a season-high 57 yards and another score.

Patrick Henry 31, Gridley 0

GRIDLEY — Patrick Henry recorded its second shutout in three games by blanking Gridley, 31-0, in a neutral-site contest Wednesday (Sept. 2).

The Patriots entered the game on a two-game winning streak and extended it to three while improving to 4-1.

Patrick Henry’s 31 points were especially impressive against a Gridley defense that had been allowing only 12.8 points per game. The Bulldogs fell to 2-2 after suffering their second consecutive loss.

No individual statistics were reported.

Southwest 26, Monte Vista 0

SPRING VALLEY — Southwest San Diego scored 14 points in the opening quarter and carried a 20-0 advantage into halftime before completing a 26-0 victory over host Monte Vista.

The Raiders added another touchdown in the third quarter before both teams went scoreless in the fourth.

Monte Vista fell to 1-3 and was shut out for the second time in three games. No individual statistics were reported.

CVLCC 26, Mountain Empire 0

CAMPO — Chula Vista Learning Community Charter spoiled Mountain Empire’s debut in girls flag football by defeating the RedHawks, 26-0, Friday (Sept. 4).

The contest marked the first game in Mountain Empire program history.
